who is joining me today from the movie Ghost from
a bunch of other movies, Tony Goldwyn. And here's the
thing that's really kind of cool. His family, his like
his grandfather was the G and MGM oh cool. So MGM,
(00:51):
the G in the middle of it stands for Goldwyn.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
He's probably not struggling, is what you're telling you.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
No.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
And then his dad was also a big, big time
dude in Hollywood. And then imagine that pressure that would
be on this generation where you're like, hey, I guess

you think of girly girls. Although this is not my
favorite drink, but it's the Cosmopolitan and that's got vodka,
orange liqueur, cranberry juice, lime juice, and a lemon twist garners.
So if you're gonna hang out with the girls, you
may want to whip up a batch.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Here you go. I've got a link to that drink

Now surveys and studies and such. Exercise it's not just
good for the body, it's also good for the brain.
A twenty nineteen study from Oregon Health and Science University
found that even short bursts of activity can approve learning.
Researchers discovered that brief exercise in mice activated a gene
which strengthened the strengthened their connections between their neurons and
(02:49):
their hippocampus, the brain's learning and memory hub. The mice
ran a few kilometers in two hours, the equivalent of
four thousand human steps, and showed increased synapses after words
in their hippocampus. This suggest you, just like to say, hippoga,
Even quick daily workouts can give the hippocampus in your
brain a supercharge for learning in your hippocampus. I might
(03:11):
have added that a few more times than needed. But
it is fun to say, isn't it. It is all right,
there you go, So uh, I think that's cool. I've
often thought, like, when I'm done exercising, that my brain
works differently. Usually it's like, dude, you need to do
this more often because you're in bad shape. Surveys and

They've been dating five years. I did an interview with
him not too long ago. Nice dude, super nice dude.
But now they are officially engaged. They met back in

So that's kind of cool. Hey, Chris, Parnell, Caitlin Tarver,

Did you know that all mammals get goosebumps hair? Your
hair stands on edds. Tiny muscles contract under each hair's base,
which distorts the skin to create goosebumps. This process is
actually called pilo erectionon. It is present in all mammals.
Hair or fur is used to trap an insulating air layer,
(05:44):
so that's why that's there. Soon now you know several
interesting things right there. I didn't know that it was
called that, and I didn't know that all mammals got it.

Time not for the scoop of the day. A study
found that seventy two percent of pet owners have upgraded
or rearranged their home for their pets comfort. We bought
some pet steps. I never thought we'd have those, but
our dog jumped off the bed and hurt her leg.
And she still kind of.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
She still jumps off the stupid bed. Yeah, she doesn't
climb up the steps. But she jumps off the bed.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
And she still hops, like, oh yeah she does. I'm like,
we have the steps.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Very frustrating.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
So anyway, yeah, we're part of that seventy two percent,
and you could call them airplane air bags maybe. In
response to the tragic Air India crash, two engineers have
unveiled Project Rebirth, a michelin Man styled AI powered crash
survival system. The concept airplanes would be wrapped in external
air bags that would deploy mid air to cushion passengers
(07:52):
and the fuselage. Reverse thrust, impact absorbing fluids and smart
sensors would all join the puffed up spectacle. So does
it sound interesting to you?
Speaker 1 (08:01):
No?
Speaker 2 (08:03):
If a crash, see, I thought it sounded interesting. If
a crash is unavoidable below three thousand feet, the airbags
would inflate automatically, although the captain could abort if they
prefer a more traditional dissent. The creators describe it as
a promise that even failure could have a second chance.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
That's actually really well.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
It is a finalist for the James Dice and Awards,

Movie Star Monday, Tony Goldwyn is our guest today. This
guy is an actor that's been in a ton of
stuff from Ghost to The Last Samurai, The Mechanic, Oppenheimer,
King Richard, and much much more. We're going to talk
to him about something a little different than his movie career.
Going to talk about a project he's doing with his daughter.
It's called Far from the Tree. Tell me a little
(09:25):
bit about this. This looks fascinating.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
My daughter Anna and I. She had this idea. She's
a television writer and a screenwriter, and we're kind of, respectively,
the third and fourth generations of our family working in
show business. We got fascinated with the impact that that's
had on our relationship. That was an important part of
my relationship with my dad, and you know, and with
his dad, and Anna with her mother, who's also in
(09:51):
the film industry. Anyway, we thought it would be really
interesting in a podcast where we talk to other people
who's you know, parent and child duos who work in
the same business. Just launched again Far from the Tree,
and the first one is just me and Anna kind
of interviewing each other, and then the next week we're
gonna have Jane Fonda and her son Troy Garrity, and
we're interviewing down the Line, Vic and Blair Schaefer. Vick
(10:13):
is the head coach of the University of Texas women's
basketball team, and Blair is his assistant coach and was
a star player for him at Mississippi State. We're interviewing
Rufus and Loudon Wainwright were to you know, musical legends
and just hearing about you know, multi generational people who
happen to work in the same game.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I think it's a neat idea for a program and
the thing that's cool is, you know, your family is
known for movies, but there's a lot of people out
there that it's generational. And then you got to kind
of wonder, is it almost expected that you have to
follow in dad's footsteps.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
That's exactly what we talk about it. And everyone's got a
slightly different story, you know. I mean for me and Anna,
I initially thought I wanted nothing to do with show
business because my grandfather, for those who don't know, was
a man called Samuel Goldwyn who was one of the
pioneers of the film industry. You know, started the company
that became NNGM IT, which is helped most people know
the name, but you know, produced many classic films in
(11:07):
the thirties, forties, fifties. And you know, my other grandfather
was a famous playwriter in the nineteen twenties and thirties
and screenwriter. And so I sort of wanted to do
my own thing. But then it must be in my
dna because when I started acting in high school, I
just fell in love with it. And then you know,
as I mentioned before, it became a very kind of
important thing between me and my father, and I want to,
(11:28):
you know, it to be in a lot of movies
and television shows and directed a bunch of movies and
television that just you know, while my dad was still alive.
It was an important part of our relationship. And my
kids have kind of both of them have two daughters.
Both of them have kind of been drawn to it.
I think they from when you said, you know, they
felt the passion that me and my wife Jane have
for our work, and so that certainly led them in
(11:51):
that direction, but discovered that, you know, made the decision
very much on their own.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Well, and now with the third and fourth generation of
the Goldwyn family being involved in show business, it's kind
of your family legacy.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well, it starts, you know. I started to feel that
the legacy was very important. I know to my dad,
you know, his father was a real kind of icon
in our industry, and I think he felt a lot
of the weight of that and the pressure of that.
For me, I felt like I had the opportunity to
do it, as you say, for very very personal reasons.
I didn't initially feel any obligation, you know what I mean.
(12:25):
It was just a deep passion with me, and as
I got old, at first there was kind of a burden.
You know, I wanted to kind of get out from
under Having a famous last name and having forbears who
were very, very successful can be a real pressure when
you're young, you know. But once I kind of got
made my mark, you know, for me, the big break
for me, it was a movie Ghost if you remember
(12:45):
that movie in nineteen ninety. Yeah, kind of put me
on the map. And then, you know, as I kind
of developed a career and sort of directing films and
being in more and more movies, and then you know,
I started to really appreciate the legacy that I was
a part of, you know, that I I'm a part of.
So so I realized and as part of why I
felt drawn to do this because I did, I do
(13:06):
feel the value of that now that I'm older, you know,
and I wanted to hear what my kids and how
that impacts other people, you know, who were in and
we're not just a interview and show, you know, people
in show business, so I want to you know, we're talking,
as I mentioned before, athletes and business people and attorneys
and politicians, and you know, obviously we started off with
a lot of my friends are who are actors, but
(13:29):
I'm really curious to hear how it impacts because it's
it's also a very natural thing in human history, you know,
you kind of it's a very natural thing to go
into the the same business as ones, you know, or
to take over the family business or whatever that whatever
that might look like. You know. Now we have this
kind of from Nepo Baby, which seems to have a
kind of a negative thing, but I found it to
be a very positive thing in my family.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Absolutely, Tony, thank you so much for your time. I
appreciate it a bunch.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
I really appreciate it. Jim, thank you so much.

We were talking earlier about pets and how you've altered

altering their home. For example, you can purchase for your
dog a Maki Crystal dog poop bag holder.

Now some weird news. The Kentucky nurse had an unexpected
patient when she rescued two baby raccoons from a moonshine
(19:05):
filled dumpster outside of her health department. The animals had.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
Fallen moonshine filled dumpster.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Out the animals had fallen into a fermented peach tossed
by a nearby Distilleryeah, okay, one of these little dudes.
Unresponsible motherly instinct, the nurse pulled the raccoon out and
performed chest compressions until the raccoon was revived.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
That's nice.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
That was her first ever attempt. By the way, at
Animal CPR, she nicknamed Otis Campbell after the town drunk
on Andy. That raccoon later sober up at a vet's
office before being released into the wild. So that's pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
That is very cool.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Would you know what to do?
Speaker 4 (19:49):
I don't know what to do on an animal. I
wouldn't know what to do on a human. Yeah, I
would think it would be.

Time out for the list. I have lesser known patron
saints and I believe these are all correct. This was
shared with me. The Roman Catholic Church has over ten
thousand saints. Many are patron saints, which are protectors or
advocates of certain persons, those suffering from ailments or certain hobbies.
Here are a few of the more unexpected ones, like
Saint Matthew, the patron saint of accountants. I did not
(23:15):
know that, Okay, Saint Phyrs Fiacre, I don't know how
say that, patron Saint of gardeners, cab drivers and hemorrhoid sufferers.
Oh what what? Okay? Saint Adrian of Nicicomedia, patron Saint
of arms dealers and butchers. Oh my goodness, Yeah, I
(23:36):

Nine year old boy opens a compliment stand to brighten
his community. Oh hot summer day, Sycamore, Illinois. You might
expect a lemonade stand on the corner, but nine year
old Ethan Wargo set up something different, a table where
the only thing he serves up is kindness.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
How sweet is that?
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Ethan spends about an hour at his little stand, offering
free compliments to anybody who stops by. Whether it's a
kind word about a person's shoes or encouragement for their day.
Ethan makes it personal. I want to give out something
good that will make them have a big smile on
their face, he said. The idea is came from an
unusual place, a graphic novel. In the book, a character
set up an insult stand. Ethan flipped the switch and said,
(25:16):
I'm going to do this the other way. I was
just thinking of it. I was like, hey, I feel
like there's something in there that could be used, he explained.
Instead of charging for lemonade, I'm going to give people
happiness and give it to them for free. He said.
I didn't want people to pay to be happy. Paying
for something like that would be silly, he added. At first,
not many people even noticed, but once his dad, Brandon,
(25:37):
shared a post on a local Facebook group, neighbors flocked
to meet this boy with the big heart.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
I love.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
This really has blown up, they told CBS news. Yeah,
it's been all over the place. Really kind of caught
us off guard by just how strong a reaction people
would have to it. Ethan estimates he's already given compliments
to over sixty people. Some neighbors keep coming back just
to see. One visitor stop by with a four year
old son after seeing the post online.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
So that is so great, what a good case.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
I love that. I love it a lot. So, uh,
if you have a compliment, stand let me know. I'll
stop buy because I could use all the company I
hang out with Heidie, I need your company. Oh please, No,
