stuff going on this weekend, and hopefully everybody has fun
stuff going on. And I'm going to talk to a
fun guest today. Derek Huff is his name. You might
know him from Dancing with the Stars. He's been on
there for a long time. Now he's got a new gig.
He recently started working on a little news program called
Extra So Goo to chat with him all about that.
(00:47):
Now he's going from being the one getting interviewed to
being the one doing the interviews.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
So nice.
Speaker 5 (00:53):
Yeah, I'm going to chat with Derek Huff coming up
on The John and Heidie.
Speaker 2 (00:56):

Today's Johnny Appleseed Day. Oh nice, and I found a
Johnny Appleseed cocktail. Oh it's got rum hard, applesider and
apple jack, which I'm not even sure what that is,
but it actually sounds very sweet, very refreshing. I think
it would be a good one.
Speaker 5 (01:33):
Oh, you're done. I thought you were reading more. That
sounds really good.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
That is it.
Speaker 5 (01:37):
I have a link to the drink in the show

Now surveys and studies and such, the saying is action
speak louder than words. Women seem to agree. Do you agree, Heidie?
Speaker 4 (02:20):
I agree?
Speaker 5 (02:21):
A study from Evolutionary Psychological Science suggests that women value
small acts of service like cooking at dinner or doing
some chores more than verbal affections like saying I love you,
especially in the early stages of dating. So how do
I do on those things?
Speaker 4 (02:36):
I think you do great on all of those things.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Well, thank you very much, you do as well. Researcher
surveyed over five hundred heterosexual adults comparing reactions to sweet
talk like I miss you versus sweet actions like running
an errand. Women were found to me more likely to
view action oriented partners as dependable and trustworthy, while men
didn't show a strong preference. In some cases, they leaned
(02:58):
towards words. Experts say the difference may reflect how women
weigh long term commitment while men often focus more on
immediate emotional or sexual interests. End quote so, yeah, I
appreciate it when you do things for me, but I
appreciate it also when you say things that are nice
you know.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Yeah, I think a good balance of both is really important.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
Yeah, I agree, I think it is as well. Surveys
and studies and such on The John and Heidi.

There's plenty more of the Summer I Turn Pretty still
(03:45):
to come. Despite Prime Video series concluding its three season run,
Prime Video has greenlit a feature film to conclude the
story to late that was laid out in the series.
So how long does it take to talk about that
one summer? Apparently it takes a while. Our daughter actually
really liked that show. After much speculation, Camp Rock three
is officially happening. Disney has confirmed the sequel is greenlit
(04:07):
for Disney Plus and Disney Channel. Joe Nick and Kevin
Jonas will reprise their role as the Gray brothers.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Yeah, okay, interesting.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
So yeah, it looks like it's going to be pretty good.
It's fifteen years after Camp Rock two, so it's been
a bit and pap Patrol is coming to CBS. A
Patrol Christmas animated holiday special will air on the network
November twenty eighth. They're going to stream it also on
Paramount Plus. And it's a mix of original and classic
holiday songs, and it's going to follow Construction Savvy Pup

new laser drill.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
Oh, how fun.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
That's gonna be fun. But it takes a turn when
Santa comes down with a cold and can't deliver presence.
Dunt dunt dot, big screen, little screen. On the John

Heidi, did you know in today's fast paced world, stress
and anxiety are on the rise? Leads to a boom
in mindfulness apps designed to promote calm through breathing and meditation,
But a study in twenty nineteen from University College London
and the University of Bath suggests a twist. Simple smartphone
games like Tetris or Solitaire can actually ease stress more
(05:48):
effectively than these other apps. While it seems ironic to
turn a phone for relaxation into a game thing, researchers
found these shape fitting games are better at helping people
unwind after a long day. I absolutely do love Tetris.
I haven't played that in years. I should get that
game just to play it at home if that helps
you unwind. Okay, I'm good at Tetris when we move
(06:11):
and when we move, Heidi's like, you are good at Tetris.
I got a moving trailer filled with stuff and there's
like one little tiny box. I'm like, oh, there's one

lept with every woman on the block except for one.
What And the wife says, I bet it's Paula.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
Well, then there you go. Good Joe, Kadie, good job.

Time now for the scoop of the day. A study
found that thirty three percent prefer texting over other methods
of communication. I'm looking at you, Heidie, I do. I'll
try to call Heidi and then she'll text me back
say what what up? What's going on? You need something?
I'm like, yeah, kind of wanted to talk to you.
Got my leg stuck in a barcap It's never been
(08:01):
that bad. That's what it feels like when I need
my idea on my end here on the other end
of the line. And for decades, Publisher Clearinghouse changed people's
lives with prize money, and they said that that would
keep coming for as long as they lived. Remember that,
I remember that. Now past winners so much are learning
those promises are drying up. The sweepstakes Giant is now
(08:23):
in bankruptcy. The ARB Interactive. ARB Interactive, the mobile gaming
firm that bought its remaining assets, said they will not
be honoring the prize payouts that were awarded before July fifteenth.
That leaves winners who had counted on guaranteed weekly checks
suddenly without income. Example, John Wiley of Washington promised five
(08:44):
thousand dollars a week for life back in twenty twelve.
Now he has to sell possessions to pay his bills.
Other winners included a disabled wa Was he doing.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
With five thousand dollars a week prior to this? How
does he have nothing?
Speaker 5 (08:56):
He was buying stuff. Now he's selling those things to
pay his bills.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
God.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Other winners include disabled veterans Matthew and Tamorrow VTech. They
say they feel betrayed after relying on payouts that now
are vanishing overnight. So they they had won this with
this agreement, they were not get paid forever.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
How were you not putting money in save five thousand
dollars a week?
Speaker 5 (09:16):
Yeah, I don't know. I just I'm telling you right now.
It's sad that that happened. And I think they offered
a lump sum or cash for life, and maybe they
didn't even offer the lump sum. I don't know. I
don't know either way. Publisher's Clearinghouse. When I was a kid,
that was a big deal.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
That was aga of the day.
Speaker 5 (09:33):

Thank you for listening to The John and Heidi Show
on a Friday. I'm excited to visit right now with
(09:55):
Derek Huff. A lot of people know Derek from Dancing
with the Stars. He's a judge, a previous six time
dancing champion. He's performed with a ton of celebrities like
his celebrity partner Jennifer Gray and his partner Brooke Burke,
and many, many, many more. Four time Emmy Award winner,
New York Times bestselling author, and now he's been named
(10:15):
as a new host of the iconic entertainment series. It's
a news series called Extra. Congratulations Derek on a very
cool new gig.
Speaker 9 (10:25):
Thank you so much, Thank you man.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Yeah, it's been as a new adventure, a new time,
a new experience, and a new honestly, a new muscle
to exercise.
Speaker 9 (10:35):
I'm looking forward to it now.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
Derek, you have been interviewed many times, but now on Extra,
you'll be the one doing the interviewing. It's a little
different now that the tables have turned, hasn't it.
Speaker 9 (10:44):
Absolutely?
Speaker 3 (10:45):
You know, I have social admiration and respect for you know,
people who do this and yourself and put it and
even you know, you know, since we're on the radio
right now. It's interesting because I was doing the voiceover
for Extra End of the Day in the booth and
I got a little bit emotion actually because I sounded
a little bit like my grandpa.
Speaker 9 (11:03):
And my grandpa he was.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
A radio DJ in northern Idaho, you know, and he
interviewed Elvis and did all these amazing things, and so
it was this beautiful, full, full circle moment. You know,
myself and my family we were such fans of the
entertainment and movies and music, and we actually would speak
in you know, movie quotes growing up. And and now
I get to sort of you know, you know, interview
(11:26):
these amazing artists and talk about their projects and also
just you know, be in this environment. I love it
so much, you know. And also I think being like
dancing the Stars is kind of trained me in a way,
you know, being a part of you know, it's something
past the people for so many years over twenty years,
like race car drivers or Grammy winners or Oscar winners
or you know, it's sort of set me up a
(11:49):
little bit in a way that you know, I'm feeling
comfortable in these types of environments.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
You know, I love that your grandfather got to interview Elvis.
Now think about who you'll get a chance to talk to.
Is there somebody on your wish list there?
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Well, you know, I'm actually next week I'm interviewing Dwayne Johnson,
The Rock and Emily Blunt, and I'm just a huge.
Speaker 9 (12:07):
Fan of both of them.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
You know, I've actually met The Rock a couple of
times by a FaceTime, but now justem in person to
see his you know, just just to talk with him,
just because I think he's such an extraordinary guy, just
from everything he'd achieved and accomplished. I think it's a
I'm looking forward to that. But you know, my very
first interview was was Margaret Robbie and Colin Farrell, So
(12:30):
you know, we started really small, just to break me in.
Speaker 5 (12:33):
I love that. Now you've been on Extra for a
little while, now, are you feeling like this was the
right move, you feel like you fit in everybody around
there being good to you, Derek on your new gig.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
It's honestly, it's a lot of fun. I like the
fast pace, you know, everything I do. That's why I
like Life's TV as well, you know, I'm basically it
starts is so great because it's live television, and Extra
is so wonderful because.
Speaker 9 (12:54):
It's so it's fast. You know.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
I think yesterday we even did a read about the
Royals and I went and did some other work and
then said, oh, we got to come back. They've actually
it's changed. They actually met up. We got to redo that,
and I kind of said, I was like, ooh, this
is exciting. It's like it's like this is like real time.
It's happening.
Speaker 7 (13:13):
You know.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
We filmed the show in the morning and it's up
you know, that day, and I love that quick turnaround,
that energy in the room.
Speaker 9 (13:20):
It's it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
Extra has been on television for a while now, and
again they've done a really good job of finding a
nice niche that's that's needed to fill. Is there anything
in particular that you would like to bring to the
show that you're saying, Boy, I've got this idea that
I really really want to do well.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
No, I think for me whenever, especially when I'm out
in the field and i'm you know, doing the things
I don't know, I want to bring some entertainment, you know,
I wanna bring some entertainment to Entertainment News. So if
there's things I act can bring to it, you know,
a few you know, hip thrusts or a few body rolls. Yeah,
just have fun with it. Really want to enjoy it,
(13:56):
have fun, bring some energy and yeah, yeah, we'll see
what happens. Man, But I so far this first week
has been a lot of fun and I look forward
to what we do in the future.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
Derek will be watching for your dance moves and your
news grooves.
Speaker 9 (14:13):
Thank you so much, one man.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
Absolutely again, Derek Huff has been our guest today and
you know, I'm from Dancing with the Stars, many seasons
of that and now he's on Extra Your Entertainment Destination,
and that is on different channels in different places. So
I do have a link to their information so you
can check the local listings and find out where you
can find it in your neighborhood. All of those details
in the show notes for today at Johndeidishow dot com.

easy one for Heidi from nineteen eighty three, Say Hello

Speaker 4 (15:20):
Was that scarface?
Speaker 5 (15:22):
It was scarface?
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Yeah, Tony Montana known as al Pacino. Yes, al Pacino
said that say Hello to my little friend. Didn't wasn't
that also in UHF?
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Maybe I don't think so it was.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
I remember he said badgers. We don't think badgers. I
was like, oh, that was funny. Quote of the day

Have the continuation of some old English insults that we
should definitely bring back. All right, let's see here a
do beater, a do beater, an awkward, clumsy person. You're
such a do beater.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
I've heard of a do gooder, but never a do beater.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Clack box chatterbox who never stops talking.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
I'm a clackbox.
Speaker 8 (16:31):
You are definitely a class a clack box.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Let's see a scurvy, a despicable low person, a scurvy companion,
a despicable person, a shabster, someone shabby and dishonest. And
a dog bolt, a contemptible, worthless fellow. There's such a
dog bolt.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
What a dog bolt?
Speaker 5 (16:54):
I've never heard of any.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
Of these either, and that's news to me.

Fun fact for your Heiding What was that John? Your
brain uses twenty percent of the total oxygen in your body,
so the whole rest of your body gets by with
I don't know what was that eighty percent? Okay, my
brain wasn't working right there. Fun fact for you Heidel
was that John? With about five hundred million sold, the
rubicscube is the best selling toy of all time.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
I could see that they're still selling.
Speaker 5 (17:50):
And I saw a dude on the internet who does
art with rubicscubes where they put different things and they
put it up and they shift it certain ways and
then it's like just a little pixels.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
On a wall.
Speaker 5 (17:59):
It's really cool, but I'm like man, Look how many Rubik's.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
Cubes that would be expensive.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
Fun fact for a heading. Babies cry for an average
of one to three hours per day, so just like me.
Fun fact for you head. The first three letters of
Sweden and Denmark spell out sweet den The remaining letters
spell out den Mark. So the first half of Sweden
and the first half of Denmark spell Sweden, the second
half spell den Oh. Interesting, that is very interesting. And
(18:26):
we'll do one more fun fact for you, Heidi. When
you exercise, the burn fat metabolizes and becomes carbon dioxide, water,
and energy. That means you literally exhale the fat that
you lose.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
That's cool.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
I just need to exhale more. That's all several fun
facts now, you know. Thanks for listening to The John

Got for some weird news. Starbucks is in the news
because they rolled out a policy requiring their baristas to
handwrite notes on every cup, with consequences including possible termination
(19:10):
for mistakes or omissions. This is meant to boost the
customer's experience. The rule has left some employees frustrated, saying
it adds stress and its slows service. Forgetting a cup
or using the wrong pen, or drawing an animal all
count as minor or medium infractions, offensive or inappropriate messages,
or considered serious violations. Warnings escalate from verbal coaching to
(19:33):
write ups, with repeated or severe infractions potentially leading to firing.
Barista say the mandate part of the back to Starbucks
campaign could feel mechanical rather than meaningful during busy hours.
Having to write notes on a cup while under close
supervision reduces the chance for genuine connection, turning what was
a personal touch to a stressful checklist. I agree.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
I could see that.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
When I was a kid, there was a restaurant that
wrote thank you on the bags and I was I
noticed when they started doing that, and I said, that's
kind of cool. And the lady that was at the window,
she goes, yeah, I started doing that. I thought that
was just a nice touch.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:07):
I was like, it is, it is, And I only when.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
It's just done from your heart, but doing it because
you have to.
Speaker 5 (20:12):
It's like, all of a sudden, there it would be right,
absolutely weird news on the John and Heidi Show.
Speaker 7 (20:17):

Time out of the question of the day for Heidi Small, Hi,
do you ready for this?
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Two thirds of us say we get self conscious when
we do this in front of others. What is it?
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Anything?
Speaker 5 (20:59):
The answer is workout, But yeah, I would say anything
is a good answer.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
No.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
That's why there are some gems where it's a much
smaller crowd, and I think those are popular. More people
should go there. It wouldn't be a small crowd anymore.
All right, I agree with that is your question of
the day on The John and Heidie Show.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
I've got some more odd odds for you.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
I'm ready.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
What are the odds that you'll make it in Hollywood
and become a big movie star?
Speaker 5 (21:44):
Zero percent?
Speaker 4 (21:46):
One in one point five million. Everybody thinking, Hey, I'm
just going to move to Hollywood and I'm gonna make it.
You gotta work hard.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
Less than one in a million.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
Odds that you'll be attacked by a shark and die
if you live within one hundred miles of the beach.
Speaker 5 (22:00):
I'm gonna say one in five million.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
Three point seven million, one in three point seven Okay,
that you'll die as a result of an injury occurred
while using a tool or appliance designed for a right
handed person. When you're left handed.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
I say, one in three one.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
In four point four million. Apparently that's not as big
of a deal. I like to make it sure.
Speaker 5 (22:21):
Made it feel that way though.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
Odds that your life will be so remarkable that you
warn't a mention in a future history book.
Speaker 5 (22:27):

Time now for the list. In Canada, the KFC has
gone hog wild with pickles. Fast food chain is diving
headfirst into the pickle craze with a new pickled menu,
daring fans and the curious can take a tangy plunge.
Here's what's available. The pickle Sandwich, a triple breaded fried
pickle I'm sorry, fried chicken masterpiece, layered with mayo, bread
(23:38):
and butter, pickles and a sprinkle of dill seasoning. That
sounds good.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
That does sound good.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
Loaded pickle fries, Crispy pickles piled a top classic KFC fries,
drizzled with mao and seasoned with you guessed at dil
fried pickle chips. Perfect for snack sized guests and perfect
for dunking, they say. Pickle pepsi. That's the one that
I thought was weird. The brave US taste testers to
get this one. Turn your cola into a tangy twist
(24:03):
and add yes, pickle brian to your pepsi. Yeah, don't
know that I would do that. It's bold and totally
in tune with the social media pickle hype, they say.
But it's not for everybody. But if pickles make your
heart or taste buds sing, this menu could be your playground.
I've got to a link to all the details if
you want to read all about it. In the show
notes for today at John Dtheidishow dot Com, Theheidi Shoe.

to wrap things up around here with good news, and
I think this is an adorable story. A young boy
(24:49):
gave up his only foul ball so a grandmother could
finally have her first yeah. For her eightieth birthday, Donna
Morey got a gift she'll never forget thanks to the
kindness of an nine year old boy that she'd never
seen before in her life. September tenth, Maury was celebrating
at a Phillies game versus the Mets with her family.
Sitting near the third baseline. She had one wish to
(25:11):
finally bring home a foul ball after all the years
of attending the games. That chance came in the fifth inning,
when a young Phillies fan by the name of Jameson
Pennings caught his very first ever game ball. He proudly
tossed it back and forth with his dad, inspecting the
scuffs like a prize treasure. But before the night ended,
he decided somebody else needed this more. She recalled how
(25:33):
it happened. I really was absolutely amazed because he overheard
my daughter talking to the ballgirl about how the next
foul ball she should consider giving it to me for
my birthday. All of a sudden, this boy was like, Aha,
I want to give that lady.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
My ball I love.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
And his father said are you sure about this? And
the little boy looked at the ball and his glove
and he goes yeah. They got up from their seat
and they came right over to this lady and handed
her the ball.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Oh how beautiful it was.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
A moment the dad capt beautifully and a photograph and
then he put it on Facebook for all the world
to see. I think that is love.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
That good job, mom, dad, you're doing a great job
with that little guy.
Speaker 5 (26:09):
You're doing a good job. And boy, kiddo, you keep
it up. That is really cool. And here's the good news.
You know, he's gotten many many many more years to
get out there absolutely catch more of those balls. And
I'll bet you know people that heard this will probably
make sure he has tickets to gaze in the future.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
Probably, that's really great.
Speaker 5 (26:25):
It's nice. I've got a link to the story in
