The John and Heidie Show. This is the John and
Heidie Show podcast. The John and Heidi Show is a
syndicated radio show that's based out of Sioux Falls, South
Dakota that can be heard on over three hundred radio
stations around the country and around the world. And you
are listening to the podcast version right now. Here's John
and Heidi.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's it's the weekend. My beautiful bride is at my side. Hello, Heidi,
how are you?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I am great and yourself.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
I'm also very good. I'm fantastic and I'm excited to
visit with my guest today. Ed Hedges is a stand
up comic and Jody Toauvea is a bit of a journalist,
and the two of them happened to meet each other
on the like the weirdest situation. It was like a
comedy festival and she had all kinds of work to do,
but she stepped into a little place that was turned

(00:48):
into a comedy club for the night to get out
of the rain. And now she overheard him tell a
story that doesn't sound funny at all, has to do
with people being killed. And the guy was coming to
and he tells this story and she says we need
to record a program talking about this, and now it's out.
It's called Wisecrack. It's based on a true story and

(01:10):
it's just amazing that it all came together. We're gonna
chat with both of them coming up.

Speaker 4 (01:13):

Time now for today's reason to party with my beautiful bride,
Heidi Small, What do you have for me?

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (01:33):
This weekend, we are celebrating the great state of North Carolina,
and apparently North Carolina likes to drink because they don't
have just one cocktail. Here's a list of five no
North Carolina cocktails, so I forwarded those to you. But
one of them on the list is my favorite, which
is the Old Fashioned, and that is one of theirs.
So they clearly have good taste, they just couldn't choose

(01:54):
just one.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, I've got a link to those drinks and the
show notes for today at John and heidishow dot com.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Now surveys n Studies and such. They analyze over three
million Airbnb host photos and they found something crazy. People
who smile in the pictures had three point five percent
more bookings than the grumpy hosts. Here's where it gets interesting.
Men who smiled saw mass if nine percent boost in
demand compared to their stoneface competition. Researchers didn't stop there.
Three out of four hosts were already doing the smart

(02:53):
thing and grinning at the camera. The smile magic is
not just for vacation rental tidy entrepreneurs raising funds more
cash when they smile during their pitch photo. Freelancers on
job sites got picked more often when they looked happy.
Even crowdfunding campaigns did better with a smile. The dating
app world figured this out years ago. Men, I'm sorry.
Women who show their teeth and photo has got seventy

(03:15):
six percent more matches. Men, though, had better luck with
a closed mouth smile, getting forty three percent more likes.
All this research points to one simple truth. People make
snap decisions based on faces, and happy faces win almost
every time.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I can honestly say, I've never looked at the profile
picture of somebody who I was getting ready to rent
their home. I read the details on it.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
So that's a bizarre one. Yeah, I don't know, I've
never done that. You book all I do that? Yeah, well,
you've always chose well surveys and studies and such on
The John and Heidi Show, The Heartie Show. Thank you
for listening to The John and Heidi Show. Brought to

The Director's Guild of America has appointed one of its
most celebrated members as their new president, Christopher Nolan. He
was elected during the Union's national convention recently. That's pretty cool.
I'm excited for him. The guy from Oppenheimer in the
Dark Knight, and for decades, Stan Lee was the King

(04:21):
of comic conventions. Now, nearly seven years after he passed
away at the age of ninety five, he's going to
be once again present at the La Comic con but
this time as a hologram. So that's kind of cool.
So this convention is I think it's going on right now.
It says the twenty sixth through the twenty eighth, so
it's like going on this weekend even and Tom Holland

(04:42):
was hospitalized after suffering a concussion while filming spider Man
Brand New Day in Glasgow. Filming for the fourth installment
of Marvel spider Man film was suspended while Holland underwent treatment.
So that's pretty crazy that is had to go into
the hospital for a concussion. That's not good. Big screen,
little screen on the John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Did you know the word butt load is often used
as a slang term. But it's like a large amount,
but it has it's an actual thing. It's an old
English wine measurement system. A butt met was a unit
used to measure large quantities of liquid, especially wine or ale,
beginning during medieval times. One butt equals two hogsheads, and
east hogshead holds sixty three gallons, making a butt one

(05:58):
hundred and twenty six gallons. This unit was most commonly
used in reference to shipping and storing wine or beer
or other liquids, and wood casks or barrels. The massive
barrels were known as butts. They often appeared in old
taverns and ship's cargo, So that's where a buttload comes from.
We don't know everything, but now we know this show.

Time now for the joke of the day with my
beautiful bride, Heidi Small. What do you have for me, Heidie?

Speaker 3 (06:38):
I was raised as an only child, which really upsets
my brother.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
She does have a brother, but you're not. You're not
raised only too.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Now. In fact, I'm pretty sure he was the favorite favorite.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
I don't know that your parents picked favorites, but if
they did, he would. I'm just saying he's pretty cool.
So he really is. If I got to pick between
the two of you, it really is the joke of
the day right here on the John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 7 (07:05):
Hi, I'm pastor Brian with New Freedom dot Online dot Church,

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Time out for the scoop of the day. I've got
a study here that found fifteen percent say that they
have stopped wearing deodorant. Why why would you do that?

Speaker 3 (07:48):
There's a lot of people, a lot of celebrities too.
What isn't that Well, first of all, some deodorants are very,
very dangerous, So it's.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Oh yeah, you mean like she handed me a stick
of the owner and literally said make sure you don't
get a rash from this, And I'm like what, She goes,
I got a good deal on this nought. You said,
You're like, just be careful. Ohant you get a rash.
I'm looking. I'm like, this is in North Korea, it's not.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Your deodorant was not in stock, and you get rashes
if you don't use this certain kind of deodorant. So
I was like, well, this is the one that I
had to buy.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
He bought it for eight cents and I don't know
that is not at This is going to be just fine,
all right. A New Zealand mom went viral after setting
a Guinness World Record for running the fastest ever one
hundred meters barefoot on lego bricks, Oh my God, clocking
twenty four point seventy five seconds of what must have

(08:45):
been pure agony. Gabrielle Wall is a mother of two
trained by dodging midnight lego land mines left by the kids.
So the feet, posted by Guinness on Instagram, racked nine
point three million views, with commenters questioning why would anybody
willingly sprint on pain bricks? Wall said it was on
our bucket list after a twenty twenty two healthcare proving

(09:06):
moms will endure anything from toddler tantrums to literal lego
torture to chase their goals. So I think that's pretty
cool that she did that. Now I'm thinking there's one
more goal that I might be able to set and
see if I can run even faster. What's that I can't? No,
I can't even run that fast with shoes on and
no lego and les. Yeah, scoop of the day right

(09:27):
here on The John and Heidi.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Show, The Jon and Heidie Show.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Thank you so much for listening to The John and
Heidie Show, brought to you in park by Jacecasemedical dot com.
Do you have a Ja's case. You can get all
of the details for free right now at jascasemedical dot com.
Thank you for listening to The John and Heidi Show
this weekend. Excited to have two guests, Ed Hedges, he's
a comedian, and Jody Tovey, she's a journalist, and the

(09:52):
two of them are working together on a program called Wisecrack.
And this is quite the tail on how this all
came together. Ladies. First, Jody tell us a little bit
about how this all started.

Speaker 8 (10:01):
I don't think Ed and I were ever supposed to
cross paths in a typical timeline. I was at the
Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, which is a big performing arts festival,
and it was in August, which is a beautiful time there.
It's always sunny, and of course it rained that day,
so I jumped into a comedy club and that's how
I was able to connect with Ed. Unfortunately, I was
trying to get away from my day job, which was
being a true crime producer. I was like, let me

(10:24):
go to see a stand up and laugh, and then
I guess three.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
To one, here we are and ed you're a stand
up comic. But this story is not funny. It's kind
of a scary story. It's a small town drama and
it kind of went to the anth degree. I'm gonna
let you tell us a little bit about what in
the world happened here.

Speaker 8 (10:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (10:39):
So, like you say, I'd come from a really small
village in England. There's less than about two thousand people,
very very picturesque and charming. But I didn't have a
great childhood. I was a nerdy kid growing up. So
I moved away when I was eighteen, started doing comedy
and things went well. I got to tour around a bit,
got to see some cool places in the world, and
then I'm going to get a cool from someone from

(11:01):
the local council and they want me to come back
and do a show for charity to raise money for
something in the village. And I didn't want to do
it at first because I had such bad feelings about
where I grew up and being bullied as a kid.
But I went back there I did the show. It
was great, I went home at about ten thirty and
I went to bed in my old childhood home when
my parents still live. And then eleven o'clock at night,

(11:24):
someone was at the door, banging, trying to get into
the house. And as the story unfolds, we find out
just how lucky I was to miss that person at
the front door. So it's a story about murder, about
a couple of murders, and you know, it kind of
follows me and my family that night. And yeah, it
really is about two people that grew up together and

(11:44):
how their path changed and their differences and similarities, I guess.
But yeah, it's a dark one at times.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Think of the odds of the fact that, you know,
first of all, Jody does this, you know, a true
crime drama, and then ed she was trying to just
get out of the rain and you know, step inside
and get away from her day job. And then the
one comic at this comedy festival that's telling a very
serious story, she happened to step in on you telling
your tale, which is a pretty serious story, isn't it.

Speaker 9 (12:13):
Ed, Yeah, it's really it's a really dark story at times.
It's essentially a horror story to be honest, I didn't
know what true True Crumb was when I first met Jody.
I always thought of it as a comedy show that
had a horror element. You're right, if we had a
thousand years to plan this out, we couldn't have planned
it better than it did. Jody just happened to be

(12:34):
near the venue. It happened to start raining. I happened
to be doing a show at that time, and the
rest followed.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
And think about that, Jody, you could have walked into
a different pub that night and just you know, maybe
got a fun little chuckle and everything would have been
done that night. Instead, you walked into the right place
at the right time, you met Ed, And now you
get to devote all this time into this new project
called Wisecrack.

Speaker 8 (12:55):
Yeah exactly, I get again. I just wanted to get
away and have a laugh. And then it's like and
then I've listened to Ed's story, which is it. It's fascinating, intriguing.
So I heard him do it again tonight, agne I
was like, yeah, this is great. Someone should make a
podcast about this. And I was like, oh wait, someone did,
And but I do think like it was like getting
an email from work on vacation, listening to ed tell

(13:20):
his story, and then obviously trying to convince him that
you know, you actually had a near death experience. I
think Edwards proud. I don't want to speak for you,
but I think you were probably just working through what
actually happened, because it was quite confusing. It was happening
in the middle of the night randomly. But yeah, so
and then and then obviously telling the set and I
was working together across a long time. It was it

(13:41):
was it was tough to get the mixed right, but
hopefully that we did well.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
And thank you so much for telling that story. And
I'm really glad you told it that night because look
what came from that. And so many times when you're
telling these stories on stage, it's almost like therapy, isn't it.

Speaker 9 (13:54):
Yeah, definitely. I'm from a really working class background, like
my dad's a builder, and I'm on morekstage in store,
so being too serious about it and talking about my
emotions doesn't come naturally to me. A lot of people
have wanted to know whether it's ant like therapy. I
think now looking at all of it, yeah, it was.
It was a kind of therapy. But I was uncomfortable
talking about this therapy at first. I'm just a guy

(14:15):
telling a crazy story and some jokes. But it's been helpful.
It's been really healing, and there are people in Wisecrack
that we interview, like the murderer's father who echoes that
this was really important to him to talk about it
and to kind of be heard.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
I guess well.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
Ed and Jody, thank you so much for your time today.
We really appreciate it. Thanks.

Speaker 8 (14:36):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
I found a race that I think you may be
interested in competing in. Okay, this is It's called the
Krispy Cream Challenge.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
It's a listening.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Yes, it's a physical, fitness and gastro intestinal fortitude. Race
runners have to run two and a half mile course,
which that might there might take you out of the running.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
I have to run the whole time from.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
The Memorial Bell Tower on campus on a campus to
the Krispy Kream downtown. Then they have to eat twelve
donuts before running the two and a half miles back.
They must do all of this within an hour.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Holy cow.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Yeah, I would be so sick by the time by
the time I made it back there running two and
a half miles on a full stomach. After running two
and a half miles, Oh my gosh, I would be
so sick. But this is a fundraiser and the races
have raised more than two million dollars for the Kids
You and C Children's hospitals since they started this race

(17:03):
in two thousand and four.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
I love that.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
Yeah, it is great, But what it'd be fun to
watch if nothing else, I wouldn't want to compete in it.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
Duncan donus. Yeah, I'm just saying.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Oh no, Krispy Kremes are by far better than Duncan. Anyways,
that's news to me.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
It's also news to me.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Fun fact for you, Heidi Touch. From nineteen twelve to
nineteen forty eight, Olympic Medals were awarded to artists and
musicians who created the best artwork and songs about sports.
It's kind of cool. Fun fact for a heid. What
five percent of people have a condition called n headonia,
which causes them to dislike music in any form. Five percent.

(18:13):
That's a lot of people. I wonder if your dad
has that.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
He doesn't because there are some songs that he loves.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, he's like, oh, his music is horrible, but he
has a few songs and he'll listen.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
To it and he'll listen over and over.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
Fact for you, Heide The Lion King will forever hold
the record for the best selling vhs of all time.
It's sold over fifty million copies. Another fun fact for you, Heidi.
On two thousand and eight, the BP Oil Company spent
two hundred and eleven million dollars for a logo redesign.
Two hundred and eleven million dollars. That's a lot of money.

(18:45):
We'll do one more fun fact for you, Heidi. Sex
is biochemically no different from eating large quantities of chocolate.
Biochemically all the same. Several fun facts. Now, you know,
thanks for listening to the John and Heidi Show. Thank

weird news. Apparently your house needs a belch. Yeah. According
to experts, they say that burping your home opening a
few windows for about ten minutes a day, also known
in Germany as a luften that can freshen the air

(19:29):
in your home, can reduce condensation and keep mold at bay.
The comparison to burping a baby might sound odd, but
the idea is the same. To let out the stale stuff,
so good stuff can come in. Burping your home is
essentially useful in cooler months, when trapped moisture makes rooms
get clammy. It can also lower heating costs, since dryer

(19:52):
air warms more easily. So strange as it sounds, a
quick daily window burst may save you money, comfort, and
even wall.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
I would keep my windows up in year round if
you would allow me.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
Oh she did for a while. It was free. It
was like thirteen degrees out one time, and I woke
up and our windows were open. She was going through
some hot flashes. I'm like, okay, I got to close
those before the pipe break. Weird news Right here on
the John and Heidie.

Now for the question of the day. This's for you, Heidi.
Most people do this when they're awake, but only about
a quarter of us do it while we're sleeping. What
is it You've done this while you're sleeping. Our sun
does this one he's leaving to talk. Laugh Oh, laughing?

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Do I do that?

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Yeah? I don't know what you were laughing about. There
was one day you were laughing. I was like, what's
so funny? And I looked at your sleep and you're laughing.
I was like, Oh, I wish I could join that dream.
She's having a blast. Meanwhile, it was probably me getting
trampled by elephant.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
Oh it was not.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
You always make me sound so hard.

Speaker 2 (21:21):

Time out for something special with my beautiful bride, Heidi Small,
what do you have for me, Heidie?

Speaker 3 (21:48):
So you know in the United States we say speak
of the devil.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Oh, yeah, that's the thing.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
So here's like the equivalent in other countries.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Okay, in Arabic.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
In other languages, I say in Arabic, when you met
the cat, it comes out jumping.

Speaker 2 (22:01):
What that's what they say.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
That's what they say Bulgarian. Bulgarian speak of the wolf
and he's in the sheepfold. That wouldn't make sense Korean.
Even a tiger appears when he has spoken about Okay,
let's see Swedish when you speak of the trolls, they
are standing in the hallway. Nice tune is in Arabic

(22:27):
mention the lion and.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
He eats you tie.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
It's just die hard, just die hard. And then Russia
remember the and here it comes and Scottish is shout
and it comes flying.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Those are just naughty.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
Those are naughty, I know. But then there are some
very sweet ones. There are a couple that are just
very very nice. So Norwegian speak of the sun and
it is shining like that and Irish Gaelic. Speak of
the angels and you'll hear their wings. Those best and
the finest one is Yiddish. If one speaks of the angel,
the priests comes.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Well there you go.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Time now for the list, Heidi. We're supposed to quit
using these phrases and emails because they show that you
can't handle conflict, According to an expert who wrote a
book called Managing Up. So the first one just circling
back on this, it says it'll make you the recipient
feel guilty for not responding sooner, so to better or
clearly state your request in deadline. So they're saying you

(24:03):
shouldn't say that per my last email sounds scolding or impatience.
Yeah it does. I see both of those so far, but.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
Sometimes you need to sound.

Speaker 2 (24:13):
Copying blank name here feels like a power trip. If
you're saying copying Heidi on this, you know, yeah whatever,
I'm letting Heidi know that I'm sending this to you.
Thanks in advance. She's like, uh no, because that's presumptuous
that you're going to do it. Don't think me in advance,
ask me and thank me if I actually do it.
Another one, please advise sounds cold and frustrated, like you're
dumping responsibility on them. So anyway, one more thing is

(24:36):
the last one on the list, so she says, quit
using those. I've got all of them in the show
notes for today at Johndeidishow dot com, and I'm copying heidiend.

Speaker 4 (24:46):

(25:08):
He wrote his daughter a letter every day. Now he's
writing to thousands who need a dad talk about the
father of the year.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
We turned as a sweet tradition between a dad and
his daughter's turned into something much bigger and outpouring of
love reaching thousands of strangers. When Rosie Paluke was a
child heading off to summer camp, her dad, buzz Ecker,
began writing her letters every single day. He kept up
the practice throughout her college years and even when she
moved back home to the area. So when Rosie noticed
her dad had a little extra time recently, she had

(25:37):
an idea. She shared his love of letter writing on TikTok,
asking anybody out there wants to get a handwritten note
from my dad, He'd love to send you one. Well,
the Dad Letter Project was born and the response was overwhelming.
Now he spends his days sending heartfelt, funny and honest
letters to people all across the country, many who've never

(25:57):
received a handwritten letter from a father figure before they
wanted a letter from my dad, But what they really
wanted was a letter from a dad. She explained for
Buzz the project has become very meaningful. It's very gratifying
to be people's fathers who don't have one, he told
The Washington Post. It's gratifying to write a letter to
people who've never gotten a letter from a father. The

(26:18):
demand has been so great, he admits that he's still
working through thousands of requests. He said, I'm still writing
letters to people who responded in this to the project
back in July. I'm about three thousand letters behind.

Speaker 8 (26:29):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
Think about how cool it would be if they said, Hey,
are there other dads who would like to step up
and do exactly Because again it's called the Dad Letter Project.
There could be a bunch of dads that would be great.
I think that would be really, really cool. I've got
a link to the story and there's all the information
in here. It's in the show notes for today at
John anddeidishow dot com. Time say good bye, Heidie, bye, Heidi, goodbye, everybody,

(26:50):
have a great day. Thank you for listening to the
