Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's Thursday. My beautiful Brian is here at my side. Hello, Heidi.
How's it going over there? Oh?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Good?
Speaker 4 (00:25):
How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm good. I'm excited because I got a fun Dear
John letter. And again I gotta say thank you to
everybody who chimed in with awesome movie ideas last week.
I still think that's probably my favorite Dear John letter
we've ever gotten. I've had some really good ones, so
I don't know. Maybe it's in the top five for sure.
But this one is good too. This one is from
I always come up with the name because we keep
(00:47):
it anonymous, so I have it signed good Dude who
needs Advice. It's from a good dude who needs advice.
I'm not good at coming up with names. I should
let Heidi do that, but he's got somebody started dating
a little over a month ago, and he's trying to
come up with some ideas for Christmas gift and I
think we're gonna help. I think Heidi is gonna help.
I hope Heidi is gonna help, because we can all
(01:08):
use your help. That's coming up on this week's edition
of Dear John Letters. A little bit later in the show.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Well, today we are celebrating answer the phone like Elf day.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Oh, like Buddy Elf.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yep, Hi, it's buddy Elf. What's your favorite color?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
That's what I was gonna say. I couldn't remember what
he said. It's so cute, it's good.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
And I found a Buddy the Elf cocktail. Now listen
to this thing. Like if you were to imagine a
cocktail from Buddy Theelfeah, it would be exactly this. It's
got vodka, it's got kalua, it's got maple syrup, it's
got it's got molasses, it's got cinnamon and ginger, heavy
cream and chocolate syrup, and then you load it up
(02:07):
on top with so much garbage that it's just nasty.
But that's the Buddy the Elf. So if you want
to make it, there you go.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
That's your recipe. Like the blood, it's a Buddy Mary.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Kind of but it's basically that plate of stuff that
he was eating without the spaghetti noodles.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Nasty, some spaghetti noodles in good measure anyway, it is
to that drink. It's in the show notes for today

Now, Surveys and studies and such. Numerous studies show that
people who volunteer regularly tend to live longer. In fact,
and twenty seventeen, a study showed volunteers have a twenty
percent to sixty percent lower risk of dying. That's an
impact comparable to a major public health advance like clean
drinking water. Researchers say volunteering reduces your stress. It does
(03:26):
for me. The stuff I volunteer for increases my stress.
It also boosts your mood and strengthens your social ties,
and volunteering encourages healthier habits, all of which support longevity.
A psychologist, Alan Lox calls the post volunteering lift the
helpers high. It's a burst of euphoria followed by calm.
The combination of connection, meaning and reduce stress may be
(03:49):
why volunteers tend to live longer. That's why, I don't know.
I like to volunteer.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Don't you love to volunteer?
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
But do you feel like that I have less stress
because of my phone?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
No?
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Oh no, I do not not at all.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
I'm the idiot at every meeting who wants to do that?
And nobody's saying. I'm like, I can know with that,
I can help with this. He's like, is anybody else
doing anything? I'm like, yeah, there's somebody's doing something I
don't know that is yours.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
And then it causes me stressed because he's doing too.

Heidi, did you know that a day on Mars is
only forty minutes longer than a day on Earth? So
Dan Mars, known as a soul sol, is twenty four
hours and thirty nine minutes long. Although it's almost the
same length as a day on Earth, is just a
little longer, making it one of the most earthlike features
of the Red planet. So the other stuff is not
(06:48):
like they have very few Wendy's locations, really none, they
have none.

Time now for the scoop of the day. I have
sleigh bills racking up over here, Heidi. With prices going
up on everything for food to travel. Here are some
of the creative ways for families to plan to gather
and give and enjoy the holiday season despite the higher costs.
So this is something that doesn't hit everybody, but there
are several people this year that are like, maybe not
going to spend quite as much of the holidays. Well,
(08:45):
here are some things you can do to still have
fun on a budget. Heidi's going to take notes over there.
A simpler menu and shared meals, says. Families are simplifying recipes,
cutting specialty ingredients, sharing cooking duties to save money. Guests
are bringing dishes that helps balance the cost while keeping
meals hearty, refocusing the holiday on time together rather than
(09:07):
the price. Here's the thing. We do that all the time.
So we have a get together, We're like, we're going
to all just do something. Yep, we do create gift
giving on a budget. How do you do that? You
spend set spending limits. Again, we do this all the
time to drawing names or giving homemade gifts like bake
goods and photo albums. Experiences and gently used items are
also very very nice, and I will tell you the
(09:28):
experiences are something that we've done a lot of where
we don't give as many gifts. Instead we're like, hey,
we're all going to go do this together, and I
think that has been wonderful. Another travel adjustments. Rising travel
costs are prompting families to stay closer home, combine trips,
or rely on virtual visits. These are adjustments. What these did?
I say that incursive? These adjustments reduce expenses and stress
(09:52):
while maintaining personal connections throughout the holidays. We've not done that.
And then the last one here smarter budgeting on digital
planning tools. So there's things like budgeting apps, digital planners
that can help you track your spending limits and all
of those things. So basically what it says just pay attention.
Here's how I know when my card quits work and
I'm like, oh, apparently I'm done. I'm just kidding, but
(10:14):
I've been there. Trust me. I have scoop of the
day on the John and Heidie Show.

Time now for Dear John letters. John all right, I
(10:42):
love this Dear John letter, and I'm excited to see
what Heidi has to say. I'm gonna take some good
notes when we get to that part. Here we go,
Dear John. I'm hoping you can help me. I started
dating somebody a little over a month ago. I'd like
to buy her a nice gift for Christmas, but I'm
not sure what the rules are. We've been on about
ten dates. We talk every single usually chatting through text
or Messenger, but we talk on the phone at least
(11:04):
once a day. She calls me when she's driving home.
That is my absolutely favorite twenty minutes every single day.
I make sure to block that time off to give
it all to her. I had a driver stop by
my house to deliver a package the other day. I
didn't go out to sign for it because it was
in my twenty minutes with her, so I had to
go pick up the package the next day. Still so
(11:25):
worth it. I want to buy her something really nice,
but we've only been dating for a month. Would that
be weird for me to buy something expensive when we've
only been dating a short while. I'm not rich, but
I do well. And I've been single for ten years
for a decade, it says so, and I don't have
any debt. I've socked away a little bit of money.
I could buy something ridiculous if I wanted to, but
(11:45):
I wonder if that's a bad idea. I could buy
something smaller and tie it into a fun experience. I
know her favorite bands and can maybe find a concert
or something. I'd love some advice from you, guys. What
do you think? Signed a good dude who needs advice?
And I got to tell you I called him a
good dude who needs advice. He had his name, but
we keep it anonymous. Heidi. So, Heidi, you are the
(12:07):
best gift giver that I've ever met in my entire life.
So I'm going to hand this off to you and
see what you have to say before I chime in
with anything.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
I wouldn't go crazy right off the bat.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I really wouldn't for a month. And it sounds like
she it sounds.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Like you really really like her, like you're really into her.
That's great.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
It sounds like she's really into you because she calls
you every day on her way home. So that's good.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Yeah, that's good.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Like if it is you chasing her, my answer might
be different.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
But since she I love the idea of an experience,
a gift that will tie into an experience. I love
the idea of concert tickets and and maybe wrap them
inside of one of the band's T shirts, like get
her a T shirt for the band or something like that,
and then when she opens it up, she's like, oh,
I love this band's my favorite band. And then she
(12:49):
when she unfolds it, the tickets fall out. That would
be amazing. And then yeah, dinner and a hotel stay.
I suppose if you're traveling to a certain nless you're
in a big town where you have concerts really close by.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
If they've only been dating a month, maybe a hotel stay.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Might be But you could get two rooms. There you go,
that's a big gift right there. You're spending money for
two hotel rooms. So yeah, I think that would be wonderful.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
I say, you go to the jewelry store.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
It's too soon for that.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
It's too sick kidding, I said that facetiously, Is that
what I said? How I said that? I don't know
how I said that.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
No.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
I agree that I think that it is a little
too early. You only been dating a month. I think
that that could actually kind of backfire because if you
go and buy something too big, you might also scare
her off a little bit, you know, or she's like, Oh,
we don't know each other well enough for you to
be getting me that. So I think you want to
be careful. And one of the things you could also
do is ask her, not ask her what do you
(13:48):
want me to get you for a gift, but ask her, like, Hey,
is there any place that you've like, a restaurant that
you've ever wanted to go to that you haven't had
a chance, you know, talk to her about things that
she wants to do. Just visit with her about things
that she might like, because she might, you know, tell
you everything of that if you just ask yeah, yeah, no,
(14:10):
you don't think so.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
I mean, you could ask, but I mean and maybe
even just ask her, are we exchanging gifts? Would you
like to do that? Or does that put too much
pressure on you?
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Are we exchanging gifts? I don't think you need to
ask that because if they've been dating for a month,
I think the months. Yeah, you don't think that he
would even have to get her anything?
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Well what if she's like, man, that's really fast.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Yeah it could be.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
You know, you could even just say, I know it's
only been a month. Yeah, I'd really like to get
you something. Would you be uncomfortable with that?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
There you go, that's a good idea. Yeah, Okay, Heidi,
I know we've only been married twenty five years. Do
I have to buy you anything?
Speaker 3 (14:47):
You do not?
Speaker 2 (14:48):
No, I'm just kidding. I got yam anyway, So if
you would like to chime in, and there've already been
some really good answers, you can do that. I've got
this Dear John letter posted on our Facebook page, and
next Thursday is Christmas Day. I don't currently have a
Dear John letter, So if you've got a really good like,
(15:09):
keep in mind it's Christmas Day. It's got to be special.
If you've got a really good idea for a Dear
John letter, I'd love to see that too. All of
that can be found and this letter at Facebook dot

So have another animal that is we thought was extinct
but ain't correct all. This one is the Australian night parrot.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
But yeah, that's my new spirt animal right there, the
Australian night parents.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
A great superherop would be.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
I'm going to get a tattoo of one of these things.
What do they look like? That's an Australian parrot.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
It was abundant in the state of Queensland up until
the twentieth century. As settlers from the United Kingdom arrived
in Australian mass numbers in the nineteenth century and early
twentieth century, they brought with them cats for pets and
foxes for hunting. But then about twenty years because of
those things, foxes were out of control. They like spread
(17:34):
like wildfire, and then they were designated as a nuisance animal.
But because of that, all of them were thought to
have been killed off. The last bird was noted seen
in nineteen twelve, but a dead one was found in
Queensland in nineteen ninety. Inspired by that discovery, there was
a journalist that spent years trying to find a living
(17:56):
Australian night parrot and in twenty thirteen he found and
photographed one. So there are still some.
Speaker 2 (18:02):

Speaker 2 (18:52):
Yeah, that is we were just talking about that. That's

why I had to see this fun fact on today.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
And he was he was vomiting between takes and you

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Fun fact for you a hiding. The Scotts have more
than four hundred words for snow. Yeah, more than four hundred.
Fun fact for a hiding. Slugs have not one, not two,
not three, but four noses. Yeah, that's why slugs are

for some weird news. A man in the United Kingdom
has gone viral for transforming his beard and mustache into
(20:10):
every letter of the English alphabet over a period of time.
Of course, the video in that he starts by shaping
a very impressive letter. A goes here, and it goes
cross here, and then he moves into a bow, and
then he moves into a C. Guess what comes next?
D yes all the way to Z with remarkable precision.
(20:32):
The writer of this article says, Hmmm, curve letters rely
on perfectly styled mustache. Sharper letters come from carefully trimmed
beard lines.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
Why did you shake your head? No, if you've seen
the pictures.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Yes, I saw the video. I watched it. Why because
I had time? Apparently it's a waste of time. Two
point five million people watched it with me, though, so
I'm not alone. It shows the immense patience behind this project.
His hair grows out. You notice his hair is longer

is the average person owns three of these electronic items?
What are they? Heidi? I have one of these? In
this room. Right now, she's looking around a nose hair trimmer?
Do I have a nose hair trimmer in this room?
Speaker 4 (21:59):
You always talking about your nose?
Speaker 5 (22:00):
A no.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
First, I know you got one in your pocket.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
I said I need one, and the said I have one.
Can't you tell by looking at it swimming nose? They're

chargers three. The average person has three phone chargers. I
don't think the average person has three. But if you do,
(22:24):
I'll take it, but only if it's unused. That is
your question of the day on The John and Heidi Show.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
Shoe.
Speaker 2 (22:31):

Time now for something special with Heidi Small What you
got for me there?
Speaker 4 (22:49):
I've got some weird Jesus. Oh, I think tomorrow is hope.
So the last day.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
None of these sound good.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
So this first one's called I think it's whatever it
is airag It is raw horse milk fermented until it
possesses a heavy cream like texture and becomes slightly alcoholic.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
This literally gives me chills.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
It's if it's fermented some more and left to hearten,
it turns into one of the sourest tasting cheeses on
the planet.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Who wants this stuff?
Speaker 4 (23:22):
I really do not know. There's clearly a market or
they wouldn't sell it. And then the other one is
oh osqui Peca. It is made in southern Poland. It's
made from the milk of sheep that graze freely in
the highlands. Only about one hundred and fifty shepherds know
how to properly make this kind of cheese. The product
(23:43):
is placed into a decorative wooden mold so that the
cheese will take on its shape, and they sell it
in various different shapes. It's usually like a cone type
of a shape, but they all make hearts and that
sort of thing for holidays. Then it's soaked in salt water.
Then the cheese in its mold is hung in a
wooden hut and smoked with spruce or pine woods.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Sounds like a lot of work.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
The outside turns golden, the inside gets creamy, and the
whole thing tastes like smoke. Brine and chestnuts.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
No thanks, I'm good.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
I mean that one out of all of them so far,
that one doesn't sound.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
And if that is the best one you've mentioned, that's
where we know we have a problem because that doesn't
sound good either, and that is something special with Heidi Small.
Speaker 3 (24:26):

Time out for the list. I'm not going to get
to all of these today, so we're gonna wrap this
up tomorrow, but we're going to start right now. According
to science, these ten songs will get you in a
better mood. How so well, according to the good doctor
who did the study. He's got a PhD in music ps,
a PhD in music psychology. He's done the research, Heidi.
They say these songs combine a major key, seventh chords,
(25:17):
one hundred and thirty seven beats permitted, a strong beat,
four beats in every bar and structure of the verse. Course,
it's the best way to compose a happy song, Heidi.
Everybody knows that. Here's some feel good top ten September
by Earth, Wind and Fire. These are going to be
putting you in a good, good mood. This is from
nineteen seventy eight. Waterloo from nineteen seventy four by Ebba,
(25:38):
The Village People YMCA from nineteen seventy eight. I Get
Around by the Beach Boys from nineteen sixty four. So
those are the zen How many I do there? One, two, three, four,
I'll do one more. I get Around by the Beach
Boys from nineteen sixty four. I'll do the other five tomorrow.

We always like to wrap things up around here with
good news. Hi, You're going to love this story. And
(26:21):
our daughter had this very same idea. Family opens a
pizza restaurant dedicated to hiring employees with special needs.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
I love this.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
I love this so cool. This's happened in California, and
it's a life changing opportunity for many people there with
special needs. Alpine, California, just outside of San Diego, the
Baker family opened a pizza restaurant with a meaningful mission,
creating real jobs for people with special needs. The restaurant,
fittingly named Pizza Abilities, was inspired by their nineteen year
old daughter, Grace, who has Down syndrome and had difficulty
(26:51):
finding employment. Rather than accepting that reality, the family decided
to do something about it. With no prior restaurant experience,
they asked a simple question, what does Grace love pizza
and people? The idea came along. Then Pizza Abilities open
last summer. Now it's thriving. Grace is not the only employee,
and she's not only an employee, she's also a co owner.
(27:13):
The response from job seekers with special needs has been overwhelming.
So many individuals have applied for the family. They believe
that they could probably open multiple locations just based on
the interest. For Josh, the most powerful moment comes during
the hiring process. Tears just start to flow when the
kids say, you mean, I'm really hired. And then you
(27:34):
watch the families and they're crying because they see their
kid gets to have the opportunity to be like the
rest of us and customers. They love it. I can't wait.
I'm going to share this with our daughter because our
daughter was that ten years ago. She worked at a
pizzeria and she came home from the pizzeria one day
and she said, I want to open my own business,
and what do you want to I just that and
(27:54):
she goes, I want to open the pizzeria. And it
was this same exact concept that I loved, loved, loved
the idea. So I think that is cool. Baker family,
kudos to you, love you guys, keep up the good work.
I think that is fantastic. I've got a link to
the story in the show notes for today at johndtheidishow
