Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the John and Heidie Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Here's John and Heidi. Today is a special day, Heidi,
do you know what today is? What is today? John?
I thought you'd never ask, Hidie. Is Wednesday, the twenty
fifth day of December. That is Christmas Day? Today. Christmas, Yes,
Merry Christmas to all National Pumpkin Pie Day. Today.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Seems like it should be October, but yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Well this all works. Twelve days of Christmas starts today,
Aphabet Day or no Ll Day, and Hanukkah begins today.
So all of that stuff happening on this Wednesday. And
I've got a couple of guests joining me today because
I don't know if you know this, And I asked
our son if he knew, and of course he knew.
This is also the birthday of the guy from the

(00:48):
Twilight Zone, Rod Sterling. I'm going to be visiting with
Rod Serling's daughter today. She actually has a book about
her father. And there's another gentleman that has a book
about the Twilight Zone and Rod Serlinger. We're going to
chat with him. There's two different books, two different authors,
two different guests. We didn't love the Twilight I know,
it's so cool and the original was still the best there.

(01:10):
And I watched them and I try to like them,
and they're bad. You just can't beat the original. All right,
Thanks for listening to the John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 1 (01:18):

Again one eight hundred three one zero five eight three

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Now. Surveys and studies and such brought to you by
jscasemedical dot Com, turns out that some people today are
going to have to fake their excitement or use their
resting gift face to mask their disappointment with a gift.
A poll of two thousand adults in the United States
who celebrate winter holidays, whether it's Christmas or any other
winter holiday where gift giving is part of it. They

(02:10):
have several things here that it's interesting. The survey found
that over the past three years, the average person who
has received two gifts they simply did not like. The
top reason people had to activate their resting gift face
was incomplete rapping, so they didn't like it because the
rapping waska Okay. Fourteen percent said that, followed by crumpled

(02:33):
or old materials thirteen percent, mismatched holiday themes twelve percent.
So what should you do when this happens to you?
Most people air on the side of politeness, saying they're
likely to respond to the misguided gift giver. Gift giver
with a thank you for thinking of me twenty seven percent,
twenty three percent lie and say I love it, and

(02:54):
twenty one percent say I really appreciate it. So even
if you don't love it, you know it was the
thought that counts. Surveys and studies and such. Brought to
you by Jascasemedical dot com.

Speaker 4 (03:04):

Did you know? Brought to you by Genesis Goldira dot Com. Heidi,
did you know that Nokia was not originally a phone company?
I did not, because when you think of Nokia, like
we grew up in the you know, eighties and nineties,
when Nokia was like everybody's phone for a while, wasn't Okia.
They were founded in eighteen sixty five as a paper
printing company. Okay, when they were founded, paper was one

(03:58):
of the world's most used methods of long distance communication.
Then over a course of time, as that changed, they
changed and got into you know, electronics and whatnot. Very cool. Yeah,
we don't know everything, but now we know this now
big screen, Little screen, brought to you by Radiosavings dot Com.
Life is about to become unfair all over again. Disney

(04:19):
Plus has ordered limited four episodes of Malcolm in the Middle,
a revival. The original series stars Frankie at Munits, Jane
kasmer Zach, Brian Cranston, All three will be returning. Oh cool,
they said in a statement, Malcolm in the Middle is
a landmark sitcom. They captured the essence of a family
life with humor, heart and relatability. They're excited to welcome

(04:42):
the original cast back, and they've got some new people
that will be joining them as well. It originally aired
on Fox from two thousand through two thousand and six.
It was that it was a good shot. I can't
believe it was that long ago. So it's excited for this.
Nicole Kidman almost left Hollywood for good in two thousand
and eight. Did you know that?

Speaker 5 (05:00):
I did not.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
She moved to Nashville and had a daughter with Keith Urban,
and she was going to be completely done. They were
all over that living on the farm and joying life,
and she decided, you know what, I'm going to do
some more stuff. She's got some movies and there's one
that's out today. It opens Christmas Day. It's called Baby Girl.
So we'll see if that one is a great film.

(05:22):
I don't know. I've not even seen a trailer for it,
so I'll have to check it out. Big Screen, Little Screen,
brought to you by Radiosavings dot Com.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Time Now for the scoop of the day. It comes
your way courtesy of Jace case Medical dot com. And
this I think is kind of interesting. Saturday, December the
twenty first, So just the other day it was the
shortest day of the year and I probably had this
in my notes that day and didn't even notice it.
But twenty first of December, the sun rises at the

(06:18):
latest and sets at the earliest, so I totally missed
it the shortest day of the year. And today, for
some reason, feels like it will be the longest day
of the year. So it's not though. The longest day
of the year is in June. Did you know that
you Yes, it's near our daughter's birthday. I think it's
June twenty first, honestly, and this is interesting. A former
Michigan resident attempted to return a library book that was

(06:38):
fifty years overdue. How fun The library told him just
go ahead and keep that. Chuck Hildebrandt is his name.
He now lives near Chicago. He was recently looking through
the books on his shelf when he spotted a copy
of Baseball's Zanius Stars by Howard Liss. Have you ever
heard of that? I have not, norvi. As he looked

(06:59):
at it, he noted had a Dewey decimal number on
the spine that made him realize, wait a minute, that
library not mine. I checked that out from the Warren
Public Library December fourth, nineteen seventy four. Well visiting Detroit
for Thanksgiving, he tried to return the book, but was
told it is no longer in their system and there

(07:20):
was no record of him even having checked it out.
Librarians told him go ahead and keep the book and
he would not be charged the twenty five cents per
day over dufee day. Can you imagine which would have totaled?
Are you ready for this? Four thousand, five hundred sixty
three dollars and seventy five cents? That seems like a lot.

(07:42):
It seems like a whole lot. Hildebrand is now trying
to do a crowdfunding for that amount, even though they
waived it. I didn't like to raise that much, and
he donated a bunch of money to the nonprofit already.
I think that's cool, A great story, a very cool story.
I love it. I've got the entire story in the
show notes today at Johndheidishow dot com.

Thank you so much for listening to the John Edheidi
Show on Christmas Day. Now. In addition to it being
Christmas today, it's also Rod Serling's birthday from the Twilight Zone,
and I have Rod Serling's daughter and Surling joining us.
We also have Mark Scott Zacree. He's the author of
a different book. We'll talk about that in a moment,
but first of all, and Serling, we're gonna chat with

(08:53):
her about her book. And thank you so much for
joining us today.

Speaker 7 (08:56):
Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
We're going to visit with Mark about his book in
a month. But Ann, you've got a book as well,
and the book is about your father. So let's talk
a little bit about this book. And it's been out
for a little while now, hasn't it.

Speaker 7 (09:08):
Well, my book came out about ten years ago. Actually
it's called As I Knew Him, my Dad, Rod Serling,
And it was a book I wrote because I find
writing cathartic, like my dad did. And I was having
tremendous grief where my father died, so that it was
a means to sort of navigate through that grief. And

(09:28):
I wanted people to know who the dad was behind
the man, and I also wanted to set the record
straight that he wasn't this dark, frightening, tortured soul. He
was funny, he was sweet, he loved the Flintstones. He
was just the polar opposite of the image that he projected.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
And again, in addition to Anne Sterling, we also have
Mark Scott Zacree joining us, and he has a book
that's out as well. And this is an updated edition,
Twilight Zone Companion. And this update edition, let's talk a
little bit about this.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
This is a third edition. It's got one hundred more pages,
five hundred new photos, audio links and video links to
things online, the Twilight Zone rarities. People kept telling me
stories about the Twilight Zone plan. I realized I had
to update the book. I initially wrote the book right
out of college and had access to over one hundred
people who worked on the show. And Anne and her

(10:26):
sister Jody, and her mom Carol were incredibly welcoming to me.
I got to go through Rod Sterling's attict, go through
his files and his scrap books. It was invaluable and
I did it to learn how to write and produce
television myself. And now after a career of many decades,
I have my own studio and hundreds of hours of
produce TV shows And interestingly, I'm working with Billy Mummy

(10:46):
in a new show I'm doing called Space Command and
Bill Bill starred in three Twilight Zone episodes. When he
was a kid. He was in It's a Good Life,
which is the episode where he wishes people to the cornfield.
He's got this incredible telepathic power and he's like a
five year old kid. It's a great episode.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Oh yeah. And you know, so many episodes just really
stand out in your mind, but that definitely is one
that stands out, doesn't it.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
Yes, And when we were shooting on set and at
my studio, he would say, don't get me mad, or
all with you to the cornfield.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
I love that. And now, Ann, I'm assuming that you've
probably seen every single episode of the Twilight Zone or
is that assuming way too much?

Speaker 7 (11:23):
That's assuming too much. And I actually did update my
book two years ago. But and Mark's Folks was tremendously
helpful to me when I was writing it because I
had not watched that many of the Twilight Zones and
did only later after my father died, and more to
see him than the actual show.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
And I can absolutely understand that when you watch it,
you get a chance to see him, and you know,
you get to see him in a different light than
we do, you know, as a fan of the Twilight Zone,
and my son is a huge fan of the Twilight Zone.
You know, when we watch that, we watch it in
a certain way, but it would be so different to
be watching that when you know the guy that's on
the screen is your and you know the real hymn absolutely, you.

Speaker 7 (12:03):
Know the guy I knew loved the Flintstones, and he
was silly and just funny, and my friends adored him.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
I love that again Ann's book as I knew him
my dad Rod Serling. And then we also have Mark
Scott's book and that is called The Twilight Zone Companion,
and they're both available right now and updates to each
of them, So if you have one of the early versions,
it might be worth grabbing a new one just so
you have all the updates. And again I appreciate you

(12:32):
guys taking some time to visit. And as you look
at Christmas twenty twenty four, this would be your dad's
one hundredth birthday. That is just such a milestone and
it's amazing to think that. And when we watch him
on TV, it seems like so so long ago. Does
it seem like so long ago? When you get a
chance to see those episodes as well.

Speaker 7 (12:51):
It does and it doesn't because my dad is still
so present for me in my mind, but that it
sometimes feels like yesterday, but then others other days. Yeah,
it's stunning that he would be one hundred. I'm having
a difficulty processing that.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Well. We appreciate the two of you taking some time
to visit with us. Thank you so much for for
all the time and effort you put into these books
as well.

Speaker 5 (13:15):
Thank you John.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Again, I'm going to throw a link to each book
to make it easy to find. I'll throw those in
the show notes for today at John Anddeidishow dot com.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
One fun fact for you, Heidi, what's that?

Speaker 5 (13:54):
John?

Speaker 2 (13:54):
The human genome includes as many as one hundred and
forty five genes that have jumped from back to her fungi,
other single celled organisms and viruses. Okay, so we've got
a lot of stuff going on inside of us, is
what I'm saying here. That's web of my pay grade. Yeah.
I don't know what any of that means, but bless you,
I don't know. Fun fact for a hiding polar bears
have black skin. Oh cool, Their skin underneath that hair

(14:19):
is black. Fun fact for your heading. Even Antarctica has
an area code. You know what the area code is
from in six seven to two, So if you get
a call from there, that's where it's coming from. Fun
fact for your heading. The first footprints on the moon
will remain there for a million years, unless, of course,
somebody goes up and you know, messes with.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Them, unless of course we were never there at all.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Well, there are people who believe that. At our final
fun fact for you heid John Netflix was conceived after
its co founder racked up some late fees for a
VHS rental. You know how much the late fees were
forty bucks and he's like, that is crazy, forty whole dollars.
I'm going to start a company and put you guys
out of business, And he did several fun Thanks for
listening to the John and Heidi Show.

comes your way courtesy of mintervention dot com. Question for you, Heidi.
When it comes to shopping, six percent of us have
done this during the holidays. What is it?

Speaker 6 (15:44):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (15:45):
I don't know?

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Return something no called in sick to go Christmas shopping?
So have you ever done that?

Speaker 5 (15:50):
Well?

Speaker 2 (15:50):
I just don't call it at all. If just don't come,

Now some weird news brought to you by Weird Gift
of the Day dot com. A woman who celebrated her
one hundred and sixth birthday at her Ohio retirement home
credits her long life too a positive attitude, and a
love of fireball whiskey. Florence Hackman, who must somehow be
related to Heidi nickname Fireball Flow after her love for

(16:51):
the liquor, received complimentary bottles and merchandise from the manufacturer
for her one and fifth birthday. Well, she recently turned
one hundred and six and her retirement home said on
Facebook that Fireball Flow is still closely following her favorite
sports team, the Cincinnati Bengals, and she still attends daily
happy hours with her friends, So that's pretty cool. One

(17:13):
hundred and six years young. Love that story. When I
was a kid, I had a guy that lived next
door to me. He was one hundred and five or
one hundred and six at the time, and he would
sit on his front porch drinking Jack Daniels whiskey out
of them.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
The key to long life is.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
I'm not saying it's not it's all I said. Weird
news brought to you by Weird Gift of the Day
dot com. Time now for the list, brought to you
by Jascasemedical dot com. We have unique Christmas traditions from
around the world. I've got the entire list in the
show notes. I went through a bunch of them the
day before, yesterday and yesterday, and we're going to wrap

(17:46):
up today. In South Africa, they eat fried caterpillars. The
tree pine emperor moth is known as the Christmas caterpillar
and they'll take those in its delicacy apparently, so they're
deliciousespecial this time of year.

Speaker 3 (18:00):
Oh, they're delicious.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
And another one view the Yule goat that happens in Sweden.
People construct a giant straw goat which is over forty
two feet high and twenty three feet wide, weighs over
three tons, and there's a live stream of the event
every year and it's there till New Year. So like
if you missed it, like you didn't miss it yet
it's still there and there's a live stream. There's a
live stream of a straw goat. And you thought there

(18:26):
was nothing to do today. And in Austria the Crampis
Parade Saint Nicholas rewards nice boys and girls with presidents,
while there's an evil accomplice Crampis who captures naughty children
and takes them away in a sack. Oh the half
Man half Goat costumes designed to frighten kids during the parade,
which has grown in popularity all across Europe. So there

(18:46):
you go. I've got the entire list in the show
notes for today at johnideidishow dot com.

Speaker 6 (18:51):

Time now for the Quote of the day, It comes
your way courtesy of Radiosavings dot com. Our quote today
is from Cassandra Claire, who says, sarcasm is the last
refuge for the imaginatively broke. Wow, that's true. I would
agree with that. I suppose I have to think it through.
I don't know what she said for sure, but sounds right.

(19:42):
We'll just go with that. Quote of the Day comes
your way courtesy of Radiosavings dot com. This portion of
the John and Heidi Show is brought to you by
the John and Heidi Show. That sounds kind of funny,
but it's true. Go to your local radio station and
ask them to start carrying the John and Heidi Show.
Here's the best part. They can carry the show for free.

Speaker 8 (20:02):
They play a couple commercials, but it doesn't cost them
anything every month. So if you know a radio station
that could use a little bit of help, send them

Speaker 2 (20:25):
We always like to wrap things up round here with
good news, and I think this is good news. It's
adorable comes your way courtesy of Genesis gooldr dot com.
This is from East Idaho, where a deaf couple always
serving others, is stunned when a secret Santa has a
gift for them. This couple again, they're deaf, and they're
known for their selfless acts of kindness despite facing hardships

(20:46):
of their own. They were surprised when a secret Santa
with gifts to ease their struggles and honors their generosity.
So they show up and say this is for you, guys.
Kent and Marlene have always been known for their boundless
generosity and their selflessness, even when they face hardships of
their own. Both are deaf. They've recently endured the hardship

(21:08):
of losing their jobs. However, instead of focusing on their struggles,
they continued to devote their time to uplifting other people
in need. One of their regular acts of kindness is
spending every Monday cleaning the home of a ninety seven
year old woman who's deaf. Their dedication ensures that she
can live in a clean and safe environment against she's
ninety seven. It's a gesture that speaks volumes about their

(21:31):
compassionate hearts. Their former colleague, who cherished them deeply, often
recalled how Ken and Marlene fostered inclusivity in the workplace.
They patiently taught sign language to anybody who wanted to learn,
and they created a warm connection with those all around them.
Unbeknownst to the couples of their unwavering kindness caught the

(21:51):
attention of a secret Sanna Nate Elon, a journalist with
East Idaho News. He arrived at their home with a
camera crew and a sign language interpreter to deliver an
incredible surprise if you know this, but it's not a secret, Santa.
When you broughtcast anyway, just getting back to the store here,
Marlene and Can't were visibly stunned when Nate revealed the
first part of their gift, one thousand dollars worth of

(22:12):
gas gift cards and two thousand dollars worth of grocery
gift cards. But the surprises didn't stop there. They also
got a box containing a check for two thousand dollars
to help with their financial needs. Their heartfelt gratitude, expressed
through the smiles and hugs, resonated deeply with everyone who
witnessed the moment. The story is a beautiful, a beautiful
reminder that kindness has a ripple effect, inspiring others to

(22:34):
pay it forwards. Love that I do too. I've got
a link to the story in the show notes for
today at johndeidishow dot com. Time say goodbye, Heidi. Good
Bye Heidi, goodbye, everybody, have a great day. Thank you
