Speaker 1 (00:00):
K what three point nine FM. Back in the morning.
Dennis Reid is in the studio this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
How Dennis, how good morning?
Speaker 3 (00:05):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm good?
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're here because you're with the third annual Blessing Fest,
which is put on by Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in school.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yes, Blessing Fest, that's just that's a lovely name.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Well, our ministry program is called Saint Peter's Blessings Okay,
And we were trying to come up with an idea
to do a fundraiser. We talked about doing something of
a sausage Fest or october Fest, which is pretty common
in the German heritage, and Blessings Fest just kind of
floated to the top in once.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
And it's definitely yeah. So it all benefits.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
This is a fundraiser, a benefit for your your weekly
food ministry that.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Supplies food to student. Tell me about that.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Well, about fifteen years ago, one of our congregation members
was going in for a regular visit with their their
counselor and teacher and he noticed some food was on
a file cabinet behind it, and he made a comment
and says, oh, you're snacking on the job. And the
counselor said, no, that's actually for food for kids who
don't have enough to eat and are hungry, and it
(01:11):
kind of sparked something with him, so he started doing
some investigation. It started off with one campus and it
has just grown to every campus within the Marble Falls
ISD And what we do is we provide food that
goes home with the kids. It'll be something like peanut butter.
It may be tortillas, it may be canned chili, but
(01:32):
things that the kids can take home. Because a lot
of these kids are latch kids what we used to
call latch kids kids, Yeah, because their parents are working
over the weekend or working two jobs and they have
to have food at home that they can eat themselves,
a weekend food. It's a weekend food ministry and we've
(01:52):
kind of expanded it to try to reach some of
the needs of the junior high and high school. For
whatever reason, food wasn't getting picked up at the junior
high and high school. I think some of it has
to do with peer pressure and the stigma taking that
food home. So we've changed what we've done there and
we're trying to expand some things. Some other things that
(02:12):
we're trying to do is we're kind of the Back
to School Blast is a fantastic program that anybody who
has kids knows that underwear doesn't last all year long.
So we're trying to expand where we'll we could go
through and provide some undergarments. We've tried to provide some
personal hygiene too, things and what have you to these
(02:34):
kids that need it. You know, I was really surprised
as I started looking into it and researching this a
little bit, but roughly seventy percent of the Marble Falls
ISD student population is considered a social economic depressed, meaning
their housing is in flux, their incomes in flux, there's
not enough food at home. It's really hard for a
(02:56):
child to perform their best in school. Absolutely to have
to pay attention, to concentrate if the billy's rumbling, or
if they don't have deodorant. And you're a high school student,
you're sitting near a smilling, you under arms all day long,
you're not paying attention to what's going on. Yeah, it's
about those kind of things, is what we're trying to fix.
We're trying to get these kids a chance to learn
(03:18):
all they can while they're in school and hopefully break
this cycle for somebody down the road.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
It's funny.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
A lot of times I don't think people think about that.
They think, well, you know, give the kid breakfast and
get them to school. Get them you know, they get
lunch to school, they get breakfast to school.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
We're good. That's not necessarily the case.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
It is not. It was really surprising to me. You know,
we have a large population that goes to the helping center, no,
the food banks. But what sometimes people don't always realize
is that you know that parent may be working two jobs. Yeah,
so whenever those food banks are open, they may not
be able to get there and get there. You know,
my wife was a teacher here in Marble Falls for
(03:57):
thirty plus years. Yeah, and some of the things you
would tell me if these kids coming in and struggling.
So yeah, you know, we know we can't fix everything. Yeah,
but we're trying to fix what we can do.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Now.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
We provide about two hundred meals a week.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
That's great, and we.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Probably know that we're probably missing probably another two hundred kids.
We haven't signed up because we don't know who the
kids are.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Yeah, yeah, you got to depend on them.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Well, we give them the counselors tell us the number
of they need. Yeah, the counselors know who the kids are.
The counselors get the food to them. All we do
is provide it.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Is provide it.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Okay, So that brings up blessing fast right, Okay. So
it's a like, like I said, a third annual and
this is a it's a fundraiser. It's sausage dinner plates
that are fifteen bucks of plate or ten bucks for kids,
and a silent auction.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
It sounds like it's probably a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
It goes on really good.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
The first year we did we did it on a
Saturday and you know, college football in Texas and for
the park to get people to.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Show up to get off their couch.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yeah, first year wasn't too great.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Last year we moved it to a Sunday. Okay, we
had a really good success and a good turnout. We
shortened the time. It's eleven to two on October twentieth,
it's going to be at our fellowship Paul, which is
on eighteen oh three Highway fourteen thirty one. You can
come pick it up and take it with you, but
we had hope you'd go through and look at some
of the silent auctions and some of the items we've
had donated are amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, like what we've got any top of your head.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
We've got a beach house at Porta Ramsas Reynold, We've
got a cabin and angel fire. We've got Spurs Lakers
tickets that were donated. We've got round to four for
golf at Horseshoe Bay Resort, and we've got gift baskets.
We've got it at all levels that there's something for everybody.
So we really encourage you to come out see what
(05:39):
you can do and help us out.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
And just you know, and it says fifteen dollars play,
but you can pay twenty, will thirty.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
You know, we'll take one hundred and fifteen young.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
That's the truth, and it's really it's a great cause
and I want to thank what Wingman's Barbecue Wingman Barbecue.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Dustin and Courtney wing are members of our congregation. And
when we first started doing this, we were trying to
work out a fifty percent where we pay fifty percent
of it, and Dustin just stood up and said, you
know what, I'll just donate it gay whatever it is,
We'll we'll donate it, and that has just been a
wonderful thing. Because food's our major cost. We get the
items donated for the side of auction, so we had
(06:17):
the cost of the food for the fight. Donating all
that food, it means one hundred percent of all the
proceeds coming in go right back into Blessings.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Going to the program helps us. Well, that's good, all right,
So give us the what win where? How all again?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Okay, Blessings Fest October twentieth, that's a Sunday a week
from this coming Sunday. It's from eleven to two. It's
at our fellowship Paul at eighteen oh three Highway fourteen
thirty one, and we will welcome any and everybody. As
a matter of fact, I'm leaving you two tickets for meals. Yeah,
for somebody to come in, give us a try and
see what it's out.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Now, if we end up giving these tickets away on
the air and you get free tickets to go to
this thing, I expect you to pay anyway.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Well, we would love to have it, but come come
and check out the silent auction. We don't want to
pay for the sausage, real pick up the silent auction items.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Find something good and I know we man has some
great sausage. Yes, yes, yes they do.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Okay, Dennis read with the third Annual Blessings Fest coming
up at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in School. It's Sunday
the twentieth, from eleven am to two pm. Be sure
and get by there and help raise money for this
is a great this is a great cost.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
