Speaker 1 (00:00):
KJA on three point nine FMAC in the Morning with
Kim Cankel and Bill McCartney, both with the Highland Links
Family Crisis Center.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Good morning, How are y'all?

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Good morning morning, How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm good?

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Thank you, Thanks for coming in. I know we're getting
close to two Men who Cook.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Huh you ready?

Speaker 1 (00:17):
No, now, you said on the way in.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
See, yeah, we are ready.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
We're ready.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
We're really getting excited. The cook teams are lining out.
We still have room for more. So if anybody would
like to come out and participate, okay, and tickets are
on sale. You can go to our website at h
LFCC dot org. Go down to the Men Who Cook
link and click register and get your tickets.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Okay, Bill, you're you're a board member of the Highland
Lakes Family Crisis Center. And plus you've got a cooking
team too, And we'll talk about that in a minute.
But tell me about tell me about why you serve
on the board of the crisis Center.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
I believe it's one of the most important organizations in
this area.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
It's a little bit under the radar compared.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
To some of the charitable organizations, but the mission is incredible.

Speaker 5 (01:09):
When I was growing up.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
We used to call these the battered Women's shelter, right,
have a little bit nicer name to them now, but
that's pretty descriptive. You know, we have a lot of
sexual and physical mental abuse in this area and in
this country, and it's the mission of the Family Crisis
Center to deal with that.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
I think it seems I don't know either one of
you can probably answer this. It seems like it's a
more well maybe it's not. Is it a more pervasive
problem today than it was twenty years ago, or we
just know more about it nowadays.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
I think it's just we know more about it these days.
It used to be something that you never talked about.
It's what went on behind closed doors. It was a
private matter. We didn't discuss it. You would see a
victim with bruises and you would know what was going on,
but you didn't interfere. It was a family matter. And
back in the eighties the movement really started gaining traction

(02:06):
and growing, and we have just really become more visible,
more vocal, and they realize that there are associated crimes
that go with that, and unfortunately, other side effects of
domestic violence being homelessness, mental health issues, things like that,
so they're realizing that domestic violence can be a core

(02:27):
or a start of a lot of other issues.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
I know my wife's been in the education system forever,
and I know that they have rules and laws that
if you see something you really have to you have
to report.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
It, absolutely, first responders, teachers, anybody that's in any kind
of government position. Just like if you are an EMT
on the side of a road and you don't stop
for a wreck, you can have charges brought against you, yes,
and they can do the same thing. Now, if you
know that there is abuse going on in a home

(02:58):
and you do not report it, then you can be
in trouble yourself.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Well.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Well, so that puts it right out there for all
of us. And what do y'all do at the Family
Crisis Center that helps people that are going through that everything?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Really we do.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
We provide shelter twenty four to seven. We have an
eight room, thirty six bed emergency shelter. Usually people tend
to think it's just for women or women with children.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
It's not.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
We have men. You see that men have also been abused.
We've actually had I want to think up to eight
in the last few years that have come through our shelter. Yes, sir,
we also have counseling services. We have legal advocacy. We
are in education and prevention. We have bilingual All of
our counselors are licensed outreach. We are trying to tap

(03:48):
everybody where they are in their healing or starting process.
And one hundred percent of everything that we do is free.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
Well that's really Sometimes those clients cannot go home. Yeah,
they have to start a new life, and the Family
Crisis Center gets them set up with furniture and things
they need.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Really yes, Oh that's neat. Oh that's cool.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Well, if anybody is listening, that is, you know, their
interest is peaked, and maybe they think they know somebody
or they are somebody who might benefit from some of
the services that you'll have.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
How would they how would they come and get in
touch with you?

Speaker 3 (04:25):
They can do it two ways or actually more ways,
but two primary is by giving us a call at
eight three zero six nine three eight six five six,
or they can reach out to us through our website,
which is HLFCC dot org. There's a portal that they
can click that'll take them right to an email. Okay,

(04:46):
we'll go to one of our advocates. Okay, and if
you see us on the street, we're not hidden as
much as we used to be anymore, and they can
just tap us.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Okay, got to talk.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Huh yeah, well that's interesting. All right, Bill, you're cooking.
You're not going to tell us what you're cooking.

Speaker 5 (05:00):
I'm not exacting to assure you. I've got a week
to send.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Do you have a couple of things that you're thinking about?
You're just still wide open.

Speaker 5 (05:10):
Let's I'm just going to have to wait.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
Okay, all right, Well I'm gonna let the spirit move
me that you have.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
For okay, Well, spirit better get to move in here.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Well, it sounds like it's going to be a lot
of fun. It's called men who Cook and there only
has to be one man on the team.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
From what I understand, that is correct.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
Our evening is just like we have talked about previously.
It's very laid back. There is no program, so we're
not going to bore you with a lot of details.
And yeah, somebody getting up and talking and things like that.
We just want you to come out. We want you
to have a really good time. We have family in
our name for a reason, and we want this event
to be a family event, so bring your kiddos out.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
It's going to be cool.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
There is an open cash bar. It's at Horseshoe Bay
Resort and it will start at six pm and go
from six to nine. It's come and go, so come out,
get you a ticket. We will have what we call
tip chips, so we will have a people's choice category,
so you get to vote for your favorite dish and
just you know, really come have fun.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
So you get to come taste all the dishes that
these Juice Men led teams have cooked. Yes, they're decide
on and there's no if I remember what you told
me earlier, there's no specific category. It's not all barbecue,
it's not all dessert.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
It's whatever.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
It's all or wide open. It's completely up to the team.
And like Bill, we're not sure what we're going to get.
It's it's kind of like a box of chocolate's like
Forrest Gump.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
You know, just open it up and see what happens. Okay,
that's it. Well, we're looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
It's men who Cook and it's going to take place
at the at the Horseshoe Bay Resort. Like Kim said
October twenty fifth, it sounds like it's gonna.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Be a lot of fun, and I know y'all are
going to have.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
We have been looking for a signature event for a
very long time and we thought this would be something fun,
something different. So even if you can't make it this year,
be on the lookout because we will be having it again. Okay,
So but we do hope you join us.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Bill McCartney, you got your your competitiveness going in this.
You don't know what you're going to cook yet, but
you're going you're going to cook to win. I bet huh.

Speaker 5 (07:16):
