K what on three point nine FMMack in the Morning. Good morning,
we have a couple of visitors inthe studio. Scary visitors, scary people.
I'll tell you about that in aminute. They're really not too scary
right now. Chief Michael Phillips andCaptain Thomas Jacobs of the Marble Falls Area
Volunteer Fire Department. Welcome, gentlemen. How are you. Good morning?
Well, thank you, good morning. How are you. I'm good,
Thank you very much. You're here. We're going to talk about the reason
(00:20):
I said scary people, just becauseI want to know. I looked on
the picture on the Facebook page ofthe Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department,
and I saw this picture of thesepretty scary looking dudes hanging out and uh
it looked like they were ready to, uh to put on the proper amount
of scare for the kids coming upthis weekend. Is that were y'all in
that picture? Thomas was in thatpicture. He's been in that picture quite
(00:43):
a quite a mini year. Ohyeah, right, yeah. I mean,
you know, we try to keephim out of the that kind of
stuff. Okay, like a boy. Well, they're here, We're going
to talk about their Haunted House atthe coming up. But Chief, let's
talk about this first. Tell usabout the department. How y'all doing.
(01:04):
How are things going? Just it'san update on the status of the department.
We're doing quite well. We canalways use more volunteers, of course,
because at any given time that we'recalled, people are at work.
People are busy with their family lives, but they give back to the community
as much as they can. Sohaving people that are of the like mind
(01:26):
is a good thing that want tohelp people. We never can have enough
volunteers because of the fact that there'salways a need out there. People are
you know, somebody always needs alittle help in hand once in a while.
Yeah, and you don't have tobe trained as a firefighter to come
volunteer, do you. There areportions of being in the volunteer fire Department
(01:46):
that we use your specialty on accountantfor instance, Okay, we might you
know, and you don't think aboutthat kind of thing. You know,
you need somebody to run the numbers. So we have many talented people in
the department, but we have someyounger people. They come in and they
say, you know, I'd liketo learn about this, and we put
them through training, send them throughTexas A and m TEAKS training. It's
(02:09):
called Texas Engineering Extension Agency. Wesend them through that. We do in
house training every Monday night except forthe first Monday of every month that's in
our business meeting. But after thatwe train every Monday, and then occasionally
we come up and say, hey, let's have a Saturday training. For
instance, we're going to be teamingup with a couple of departments and it's
sponsored by Granite Shoals. But we'regoing to be going over to the Horseshoe
(02:31):
Bay Fire Department training area and we'regoing to do some rapid intervention training cool
and that is to teach members tocome in and should we hear about firefighters
getting hurt at scenes, because itis dangerous when something's on fire. So
we hear about those things and wehave to be trained to go in to
save ourselves or save our fellow firefighters. Sure, absolutely so much. You
(02:53):
you don't think of as a asa civilian or whatever you call people like
me that don't know anything about whatyou do for a living. It's amazing
though, and we appreciate it.How big an area does the Marble Falls
Area we cover between one hundred andtwenty hundred and twenty one square miles.
Okay, we actually surround the cityof Marble Falls and we help out Granite
(03:15):
Shoals, Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, and they reciprocate back. Sure,
because we have a good staff ofpeople, we always can use more on
all sides of the house. Butdollars, when it comes down to it,
tax dollars is what pays for usto be here. And there's times
we need a lot of folks andthere's times that you know, it may
(03:39):
seem silly that we're just standing around, but we can have those our blessings
because that means no one's in needof anything. Yeah. Yeah, that's
a good way to look at it. That's a really cool way to look
at it. Let's talk about theHaunted House that's coming up seventh Aaniel,
have you been involved every year?I have been a lot. Yes,
I was one of the ones whowant to start this. Yeah, the
(04:02):
FD well, it's fun and thepicture I was referring to is on your
your Facebook page, the Department's Facebookpage, and it's like, you know,
we're here to welcome you to theHaunted House. And you know,
it looks like a bunch of it'sa motley crewe. I guess y'all are
ready. You're all you're all stainedand masks on and ready to go.
It looks like a lot of fun. Do you all have a lot of
(04:23):
fun doing? Absolutely? Yeah? Why do you do it? Because we
you know our location of our station, you know, we're right there in
the middle of the city, youknow, and and and there pretty much
isn't one around in Marble Falls. We just decided one time, look,
we're gonna go as chief if wecan do a haunted house. And and
(04:46):
we did. We started doing itjust just just for the kids to come
in, and you know, wewe would give away pumpkins and stuff,
you know, and and let thekids come in, paint pumpkins and go
through. And so it's been it'sbeen fun for the last six years.
Seven you're going on seven. That'sneat. That's now. Is there a
cost to go through the Hunted House? No? No, really, no,
there's no. It's it's free tothe public. Donation boots set up
(05:10):
here, but it's free. It'sfree to the public. Well, that's
fun, and and I'm always intriguedby this point you can ramp up the
scare or y'all can dial it backa little bit if you have somebody going
through that's not maybe not ready forthe full scare thing. Absolutely, we
usually have a crew outside that's saying, hey, we've got some little ones
coming through, you know, sowe'll just kind of like stand there and
(05:32):
make some you know, some movements, and other than that, we try
to keep it as as family, you know, oriented as possible without the
little How many people do you haveinvolved in the in the hunted house?
How many? How many? Howmany bodies can we expect to see going
through there? Oh? To gothrough there? Oh man, several hundred.
(05:53):
Yeah, you know the first thefirst night is usually kind of I
guess you'd say, are slower one, and then the second night is usually
the longer, the longer ones. And it's coming up. It's this Saturday
and Sunday nights from six to ninepm, right, yes, sir,
So just come on up and we'llhave you can you know, we'll have
a line for him. You getin line and just you know, come
(06:15):
through and just get through, hangout, and there be people around the
fire department for you know, kidsthat look in the fire trucks. Oh
cool, So there's that benefit too, that's always. Yeah. We'll have
people inside and outside working okay, and you'll see Chief running around, you
know, or hiding anybody that canhelp, you know, any of the
kids. Yeah what Chief what.It also says on on your flyer that
(06:40):
you y'all are there too if somebodywants to come just to talk about maybe
joining the department or becoming a volunteer. Yes, during this whole thing,
we still have to continue our dutiesof covering when there's a call comes in.
Sure, so there's a group ofthis, you know, a handful
that stay outside that will always answerquestions. Anybody has a question, wants
(07:00):
to get it, like Thomas said, wants to get into one of the
apparatus. Uh. But we're thereto talk to people if they have specific
questions about their area then you know, anywhere from metal achs to wherever.
You know, what do we do? What about the burn band? Things
of this nature. We'll answer thosequestions. We'll talk to questions about hey,
what do I do? If wewant to volunteer, We'll talk about
those things. And just some peoplecome in and say, hey, what
(07:23):
do you guys need. Yeah, and we talk about those things because it
seems funny. Because there's times thatwe've been blessed by the community. We
have big fires and all of asudden we see uh, you know,
goodie baskets sitting out there anywhere, from cookies to water to all kinds of
good things, and we put thoseto use. We you know, if
it's you know, we'll share itwith the other departments that we're there,
(07:46):
you know, tell them we're reallyabout customer service. I mean, it
sounds weird, but in this dayand age sometimes but we're only here for
the people. Yeah, we're lookingat you have one of the worst days
of your life maybe and you callus and it's just we need to care.
This is one of the times thatwe're going to cater to you because
(08:07):
you're the one in need. Yeah, and you always do what you can
to help. Well, that's reallythat's really noble and very cool. The
Challer the Chill are doing that.I want to again invite you to the
Marble Falls Area of Volunteer Fire Departmentseventh annual Haunted House. It's this Saturday
night and Sunday night, both nightsfrom six to nine pm, and we're
(08:28):
going to be at the fire stageat Charles Fire Station. Right that's on
Avenue U is six oh six Avenueyou okay, right down for the elementary
school, okay, and parking thestreet. You know, we have times
where the street's just packed like wehave something really going on and we do
the house. So come on downplease. We like to see you,
(08:50):
just if it's just to say hello, good good and you get to see
see who is this fire department andyou get to see us. Some of
our faces you'll see and some ofthem will be hind masks yep, yep.
Okay, they'll be hidden. Huh, I said, we'll be hidden.

to go through the haunted house. That'll be fun. Now, if a
teenager comes through and thinks, ah, I got this, you're gonna ramp
it up. Take care of ateenager comes with things we're going to intentionally
