Speaker 1 (00:00):
What is going on? Everybody? Welcome to the KBR Sports Podcast.
You already know the best sports podcast of your twenty
four hour day. Thanks for tuning in today's episode of
the podcast. If you are not already a subscriber or
follower of the podcast, go ahead hit that subscribe and
or follow button and also make sure you guys, go
ahead and leave a review on this podcast five stars.
I'm not trying to influence your ways of where you
(00:22):
want to vote or how you leave a review, but look,
if you can leave a rating of five stars, it
would generally help me a lot and help the podcast
out a lot because then other people, I mean, think
about it. When you hear people talking about a five
star restaurant or a product is five stars on Amazon,
You're like, Ooh, I'm more in clients and want to
go and buy that product. I'm more inclined to want
to indulge at that restaurant. If you got a five
(00:45):
star podcast, a lot more people are more likely to
want to dive in and take a listen, isn't it so?
If you haven't left a review already, and you're listening
for either the first time or you're a return listener, man,
what are you waiting for? Go ahead and lead that review,
talk about it is the best sports podcast that you
could possibly listen to. So that way the people you
need to recommend this show too can also be hip
(01:07):
to the fact of how good it is. But all jokes, ASI,
y'all appreciate you for turning into this episode of the podcast.
Obviously we are right when this podcast is getting put up.
Where at the end of close to the end of
the work week. It will be Thursday when this podcast
is put up. Should have been up on Wednesday. But
I'm not gonna lie to you, guys. I have had
(01:28):
a headache that I've been going through. I haven't taken
no days off from work or nothing like that. It's
been finding through it. But I have had a just
bulging headache and I've tried to work out through it,
try to do other stuff through it, and I'm just like,
what do I gotta do? Sleep could help, It could
be one of the remedies. But you know, I'm gonna
cross off all things off the list before I get
down to that. It's awful. God, I don't know why
(01:50):
I don't sleep. Man, There's this things that I wanted to
do at night, were trying to watch ball, I want
to sometimes play games. It's this stuff I want to do,
and it's like the during the day, I can't do
it because I'm working, And then I got to try
and be productive in other ways of making content and
also going to the gym. So then I'm reading I'm
at an impass where at night I'm like, oh, what
do I do? And normally what I end up doing
(02:11):
is either watching the NBA because I gotta make content
to be knowledgeable about what's going on, or watching the
football game that's on so I can make content and
be knowledgeable about what's going on, or I want to
play the game. So not just where we are, but
hopefully you guys do enjoy getting this podcast on Thursday.
Hopefully the topic matters that I'm going to be talking
(02:32):
about today's podcast are something that you know, grab your ear,
hold you by the ear. You know, when you get
in trouble on your parents, grab you by your ear
or something like that. Hopefully this podcast episode grabs you
by your ear so gently, but you just want to
keep listening, right, So, without further ado, guys, let's talk
about today's topics. Man, we got things to talk about
from the NFL to the NBA. Right now, by the
(02:52):
time I'm recording this podcast, NBA Cup game between the
Knicks and the Hawks just finished. And man, when I
tell you, Trey Young, dude is a marketing genius. That
man knows that wisely, all right, wise he mighta add
you becoming an enemy of the New York Knicks fan
base and the New York Knicks as a whole. It's
just a genius marketing tool. You're talking about the biggest
(03:15):
city in the United States, and you're making yourself a
pariah to them anytime you step on the court, right,
You're making yourself a villain to that fan base, even
though the Hawks and Knicks aren't necessarily enemies or rivals
in the same sense of what the Knicks and Philadelphia
seventy six ers or the Boston Celtics or something like
that are. But he's making himself such a heel to
(03:38):
those fans that it's so funny to watch. I mean this, man,
he started skipping at the end of the game after
they beat the Knicks pretty much within about two minutes left,
with they had such a lead that he was just
so comfortable with the fact that they were gonna beat
these dudes. I'm just like, oh my gosh, it was
just so funny to watch man. Then he puts his
(03:59):
foot on the low he rubs the logo, actually the
Knixt logo at the center court. Is this, That's what
it means to be box office and people talking about
stars knowing moments, stars knowing how to get the crowd
into a stars knowing how to really sell themselves, sell
their brands. A lot of times, it's better to be
a villain than to be one of the most love
(04:20):
players in the NBA. And why I say that is
because a lot of times people when somebody makes you
feel something emotionally, think about it. It wasn't always the person
you were rooting for a lot of times, it was
that person that you just knew they were going to
put a dagger through your heart because you never wanted
your team to have to face that player or that
team because that player team was just so good and
naturally they had always been that person that take away
(04:42):
from your team in a way, shape, or fashion, right.
And the perfect analogy for this and why when he
passed it was such a heartbreaking moment. Was Kobe Bryant,
because Kobe was such a hero if you were a
Lakers fan, and if you weren't a Lakers fan, he
was one of the biggest villains that people just love
to hate around the league in terms of fan bases.
(05:02):
And there's a lot of Lakers fans, so obviously Kobe
had a huge fan base. But one thing I also
will say when it came to Kobe and a lot
of the other stars that try to mimic how Kobe
carried himself and what and whatnot, is that Kobe was
always president. He always did all the other superstar duties
that you have to do as a star in the
NBA to be so well known around the world, to
(05:23):
be so well loved. And it's one of those scenarios
where I think playing every game or trying to make
it to every stadium and so on, does naturally build
that natural fan base of people who love to watch
you play. Obviously, people even though people will say they
hate a certain player, they love that player because they
love them from a respect standpoint. They respect their game,
(05:44):
how they don't cheat the game and stuff like that.
But when I say that now you hate that player,
is it's more of a thing of you hate that
that player has, like your team can't get over the
hump of that player, or that player is always the
one that brings you such noted It's like you you
see such beauty in the game they carry, but then
you hate seeing it because you know it's going to
(06:05):
result in your teams in a deficit for your team
or something of that sort. And there's a few people
in the lead nowadays that you'll see that with. I
think Steph Curry to some extent, he is a player
that people, by a large groups of large margins just
love as a whole. I think as the Warriors had
more success, and I think as they became a bigger, bigger,
(06:29):
bigger brand, that people just naturally started disliking them because
they became viewed as front runners, the guys that knew
that would always shoulder shit me, do all these things
when they're in the lead, celebrate when they're in the lead,
and stuff like that. But then be I guess had
the perception of being poor sports when they're not winning.
But I also think that when you look at someone
like Steph Curry that he's probably one of the He's
(06:49):
probably the most popular player amongst young kids, almost a
younger fan base and so on. So it's so funny
to me, how and he's one of those guys that
he's in Boston, game six or what was a game six,
game five in Boston, hits them with the night night,
doing all the antics that will make a fan like
they just they just look at you and they're like,
oh my gosh, I hate this guy. That's when you
(07:11):
start making up stories about a player you don't even
know the guy you're talking about. All he's so cocky,
that guy is so arrogant, so self absorbed, so full
of himself, and all of it, honestly, is just respect
because you know, at the end of the day, you
can say all those things, but that person's gonna show
up and do their job. And them doing their job
means that your team most likely is not gonna be
able to succeed at wanting to do their So that's
(07:34):
just something funny that it always just stands out to
me when it comes to fan bases and people being upset.
But one thing, when I now that we have the
NBA Cup result with the Knicks losing to the Hawks,
now you're gonna have in the semi finals you're gonna
have the Milwaukee Bucks playing the Hawks. And at the
time I'm recording this, the Warriors and Rockets are still
(07:54):
playing their game, So we'll see who the Oklahoma City
end up playing, Okaoma City Thunder end up playing. But
I think that the NBA Cup concept, it's interesting, But
I think that I don't know how many people are
bought in. I mean, this is one of those things
where I want y'all to tell me if you can
comment on the podcast or anything like that, if you
want to tweet at me, let me know if you
(08:15):
have watched the NBA Cup or are you naturally tapped
into the NBA Cup and the games that are happening,
and do you care about it at all? Doesn't have
any interest to you? Does it matter? I think that
one of the things that the NBA and it's players,
I kind of get annoyed with the players that they
do this, particularly I think Lebron who has been the
face of the NBA for the last I mean, lord
(08:36):
knows how many years. But when the NBA implements something
new to try and garner viewership, try to increase leadership,
get people more engaged throughout the regular season, people already
feel like NBA players don't care enough about the regular
season and different things or moments and events that happened
during the regular season, especially when it comes to rest
(08:56):
days and so on. So then when it comes to
the NBA trying to institute a tournament that in some
ways can just make the games feel like they matter more.
People are playing harder for these games because they matter,
with an incentive in the middle of the season to
try and win something, try and get something for your
teammates that might not have that money to go and
get that championship prize money that you guys are gonna
(09:19):
get paid out as a result of being the tournament champions.
And then Lebron when talking about it, it's weird because Lebron.
I think Lebron recently had comments after they had lost
and been knocked out saying that it didn't matter to
him and he doesn't think it's important something along those
I'm paraphrasing some but the thing that annoys me about
those comments is that not only was it just about
(09:40):
a year ago where Lebron and his team had just
won that championship and the Lakers and they were popping
champagne bottles in the locker room and stuff like that,
like they had won a championship. And also it annoys
me because if Lebron's saying that message, saying that it
doesn't matter, it's not important, then what are the fans
gonna think? Right, we've been having this discussion or there's
(10:00):
been multiple discussions rather about NBA viewership going down and
the multitude of reasons for it, whether you want to
talk about NBA injuries, no lack of storylines, lack of
interest with aging players, not really being in championship contention,
whatever you want to talk about, whatever the case might be,
not being able to find the next star to really
be the beacon that carries the torch from Lebron, Steph
(10:22):
and Kevin Durant in some respect, all those things you
can discuss all those things, or just if NBA offenses
have gotten too crazy, if the office has been come
too easy to score in the NBA, so the game
is just not interesting anymore because people are just shooting
nothing but threes. So it's such a stat driven game
now that with everybody's shooting three pointers, it becomes a
(10:44):
three point contest in the least interesting form of a way.
Because if everybody's just trying to shoot threes, you that
it's not like Steph Curry's launching three is from like
miraculous distances with incredible contests and he's hitting them on
a regular basis, and you're like, how this guy's still
shooting forty percent from three? The degree of difficulty. No,
if people are taking those types of threes, people are
taking like wide open threes and shooting like thirty five
(11:06):
percent running around there from deep. And so when you're
missing a lot of those shots and it just feels
like everybody's just trying to jack up a crap ton
of threes, the game does begin to bill feel a
bit hollow. It's like, man, what are we doing here?
Like we're show me the death defying dunk, show me
the athleticism. Let's let's come on, guys, let's go. And
so a lot of those things contribute to it. So
(11:29):
that's why I have issue with where when it comes
to this NBA Cup and when it comes to a
guy like Lebron talking about it and him kind of
smirching it in a way, I'm like, come on, man,
you can't can't be doing that when your leagu's already
struggling with ratings, right, like, there's no way, There's just
no way. But I say that to talk about a
league that doesn't struggle with ratings, because you know, the
(11:49):
games actually matter more so in this league, and that's
the NFL. And one of the more interesting news plot
lines coming out of last weekend's slate of games was
actually the I guess the tip between the AJ Brown
and Jalen Hurts and what I want to play the
sound bite for you all, but A J. Brown essentially
was talking about the issues about what the Eagles are
(12:11):
facing with their offense and so on, and when talking
about it, he immediately posts a finger at the passing
they ask him about it. In his first response when
they ask him, he says, passing is the issue. And
so I'm going to play the sound bite for here
so you guys can hear it. What are some things
you think they that the offense needs to improve on? Guys, passing?
(12:34):
So you hear it there, AJ says passing and that
response immediately is captured, goes viral on the social media
pages and everybody's talking about it, and it feels like
there's a riff, like he's calling out Jalen Hurt specifically
with those comments, and then Brandon Graham appears later on
a radio show on it might be his own show, honestly,
and where he's talking about the incident and he kind
(12:56):
of talks about it without getting any more additional context
from either Jalen Hurts or aj Brown. So here are
his comments when he's talking on the radio show, and
these kind of end up blowing up as well.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
The person that's complaining need to be accountable, and I'm
just being honest, you know what I'm saying, Like, and
he noticed he you know, I don't know the whole story,
but I know that one is trying. And I mean,
eleven could be a little better with how he respond
to things. And they was friends before this. It's like, man,
(13:28):
but things have changed, and I understand that because life happens.
But we got to it's the business side that we
have to make sure that we don't let the personal
get in the way of the business. And that's what
we gotta do better as right now.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
So that's a snippet from that that I'll play. And
it's so funny because even that that was like the
thing that took it to the top. Next level. A
lot of people were like, oh, that's confirmation that right there,
Brandon Graham confirmed there's an issue between Jalen Hurts and
AJ Brown. And mind you, the Eagles are one of
the best teams in the NFL right now. It's it's insane.
(14:02):
I mean, they're right at the top of the NFC
next to the Detroit Lions, who they've been going back
and forth with to fight with for who can get
supremacy in that in that conference. And now you have this,
this this plot line come out of a weekend where
the egos. Obviously, if you're facing the loss and you're
not happy about you're not gonna be happy about that,
(14:22):
or your offense didn't perform to the standards that you
want them to perform at, then you're gonna be talking
about talking about it in that way because I think
going up against the Carolina Panthers, they're not happy with
just putting up twenty two points against a Panthers team
that's led by Bryce Young, right, so they're talking about
what are the struggles that you're enduring on offense? And
so I think that now and obviously the story expounds
(14:43):
even further beyond there because then you have that that
pr nightmare start to go down with the team. And
then Brandon Graham then backs off of his comments and
apologizes and he said and he takes his comments back,
and this is what he says. I made a mistake,
and I assumed that it was something that it wasn't.
I just want to win so bad that I don't
(15:04):
want to just use the media when we need to
talk about something and we could fix the problem ourselves.
I didn't add to it in a good way, in
a good light. So that's my bad. I just assumed,
and it made me out to look even worse because
I had it all wrong. And now people are going
to run with that part. I really just want to win, man,
and I want brothers to be able to just hash
(15:24):
it out. And so now we are here today December eleventh,
and apparently AJ Brown and Jalen Jalen Hurts were able
to hash it out and they did comment on what
Brandon Graham had said. And AJ Brown says at his
locker on Wednesday, BG was just being beg He's emotional
in that case, he just misspoke. Me and Jalen are good.
(15:44):
Then Jalen Hurts echoed those sentiments and said that one
of the Brandon Graham, is one of the most respected
players on the team, and he spoke out of place.
He knows that. So it does seem like all things
are good with the egos. But I do think that's
one of the interesting plot lines to keep your eyes
on because one of the most notable things that ends
up happening a lot with teams with success, especially when
(16:06):
you have start with success, you need talent on your
team right and at times when talent isn't radiating as
much as it's used to, that can lead to guys
complaining or issues being discussed. In some frameworks, and when
Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown are talking about or what
a J. Brown comments on Jalen Hurts is passing or
the passing game being lackluster, it was interesting to me,
(16:28):
so I went and did digging myself right. So, right now,
Jalen Hurts is twenty in passing yards with twenty six
hundred and two yards. He's fourteenth in passing touchdowns with sixteen. Okay,
now in context for that with AJ Brown. AJ Brown
is seventeenth in receiving yards with eight hundred and thirty
six forty third in receiving touchdowns with four and ten games.
(16:51):
Now that ten games part is a very important highlighting
portion of this topic because, for added context, there are
no players who have played ten games or fewer that
are ahead of AJ Brown and receiving yards. And the
only players that are ahead of AJ Brown and receiving
touchdowns who have played ten games or fewer is Mike Evans,
(17:12):
Cooper Cup, Chris Godwin, David and Djoku, Alan Lazard, and
T Higgins. And an important note in that respect as
well is that Hurts is twenty first in passing attempts
at three hundred and twenty five per game, or sorry,
not per game, at three hundred and twenty five total,
which means he's behind every one of those receivers, quarterbacks,
(17:33):
and overall passing attempts. And yes, that even includes the
Browns splitting their passing attempts between Jameis Winston and Jason Watson.
So when you take all that into account, the Eagles
aren't throwing the ball as much as these other teams,
and yet AJ Brown is still keeping pace with a
lot of these other receivers. So it's not one of
those things that when you're thinking about the fact that
(17:55):
AJ is like, oh, well, I'm not getting these touches
in this regard. Maybe yeah, you're forty third touchdowns and
so on, but it's not like these other guys. I
think that guy this highest on the list is Mike Evans,
and Mike Evans even that of itself, he's hundreds of
yards behind AJ Brown in terms of receiving yards. So
while he's getting the touchdowns, he's not getting those receiving yards.
(18:17):
And so it's interesting to me. I think AJ maybe
he's frustrated with just how the offenses looked with like
that they didn't want they want more of a big,
high flying attack type of deal. But he's getting the
ball at least that's what I'm seeing from the stats,
and even when you're looking at how he's compared to
his peers, he is getting the football. So it does
(18:39):
feel like this was a little bit of much ado
about nothing in some respects. But I do hope that
it's not something that ends up boiling into something bigger
when it comes to this Eagles team, Because when you're
sitting there fighting for conference supremacy and you're right there
at the top of it, and when we're talking about
They're eleven and two, the Minnesota Vikings are eleven and two,
and the Detroit Lions are twelve to one. There's very
(19:02):
small margin for error, so every distraction can take away
from what you guys already had in place in the
momentum you have carrying forward, and especially when you have
a Steelers team coming up this week that's also been
a really good team to play against, or a really
good viable team this season at Nison there at ten
and three, you don't really want these distractions to be
(19:22):
what you're talking about, especially when you have so much
positive momentum, and you got to think about it, aj Brown,
when you're talking about passing receptions and so on. The
Eagles offense has a good amount of weapons. I mean,
you got Saquon Barkley who's looking to break the rushing
record that Eric Dickerson has set, and naturally, when you're
running the ball a bit more and stuff like that,
you're gonna have less passing attempts. And he's still cooking
(19:44):
with the ball when he gets it over eight hundred yards.
And you got Davonte Smith too, who's also a very
viable receiving option. So I don't know, man, I think
this is when people talk about receivers sometimes I'm not
gonna say, I'm not gonna use the word divas or
whatever the case might be, but receivers can be a
bit outspoken at times when the numbers don't back up
(20:05):
what the what the I guess the complaint is. And
by all measures, he's having a good season, especially for
the amount of games that he has played, and considering
the amount of times the Eagles have thrown the ball.
If he's saying he wants them to throw the ball more, okay,
but you're winning playing this way. You're eleven and two
(20:25):
winning this way. So I don't know. It's just a
bit subjective to me. So when I look at the Egles,
I think that when you have the Steelers coming up,
you have the Commanders coming up, you go the Cowboys,
and you have the Giants, I think you just keep
riding what has been working with Saquon Barkley and trying
to accumulate those rushing yards and trying to maintain that
(20:47):
dual threat offense where you can have a rushing game
a passing game, just depending on the circumstance. I really do.
And the funny thing is a j Brown's not having
the only receiver to complain this week. He's just the
one that had the biggest one because he didn't in
a recorded postgame interview on where the presses in the
(21:08):
locker room and he's talking to the press and then
they interview him there and now it was his statement.
But then Deebo Samuel goes and complains about getting the
ball too. Deebo goes and tweets out a tweet about
the forty nine ers situation where he says, not struggling
at all, just not getting the ball, and the tweet
that he deleted. But the funniest part about that tweet
and it kind of did go viral, not kind of
(21:30):
it did. It goes viral because it gets community noted
his tweet. His tweet gets community noted. Deebo Samuel is
the receiver for the forty nine ers, and the Twitter
or ex community note says he leads the team in
drops he's struggling, just simple and clean. Right there, he
(21:58):
leaves him and drops he struggled. It's not even because
it immediately refused what Debo is saying because he says
not struggling at all, just not getting the ball and
the clapback was so loud from my community. No, it's
like that was not necessary, but funny enough. Deebo then
tries to expound upon that and says that he says
(22:19):
that he's not calling any of his teammates out and
it's just vending frustration, where he says, just because I
voiced my opinions doesn't mean I'm hating on any of
my teammates. Be for real, and then he later says,
y'all heard what you want to heard here. Look, man, look,
I am sick and tired of people putting things out
into the ether that can be interpreted in multiple ways. Yes,
(22:44):
you can. In the error of social media, especially in
this grift culture era, it is almost like you have
to vet your tweet multiple times if you're a public
figure and you know how this can reflect on your
quarterback and your team, your offense, whatever the case might be.
You have to vet you're what you're putting out into
the ether, because you know you're not in the space
(23:05):
of social media anymore. We're probably about fifteen years removed
from when you could just tweet say something and somebody
didn't try to make grifting content trying to spin your
content in some type of way, and you know it's
we're so far beyond that now at this point in age,
and you can venture frustration, right, But if people are
(23:28):
if you're saying that you're just not getting the ball,
people are immediately gonna then go look at your quarterback
or you're or whoever's calling your plays to source, why
isn't he getting the ball. It's not one of those
things where the media is trying to is out to
get your debo. Social media just isn't the place you
(23:49):
go to to vent your frustration when you're when you're
a public figure and your voice carries weight for your
whole entire locker room, especially when it's directly tied to
the guy that's taking snaps. I just don't understand how
people don't get this. It's literally it's PR one oh one,
a class I did take in college. It might not
(24:11):
be one oh one, but I did take public relations
in college at one point. Yes, that's something you always
gotta be mindful of. And obviously this then ends up
being brought to brock Purdy where he talks about it.
He said, Deebo and I talk all the time. He's
like one of my best friends on the team, and
this is what he said to reporters on Tuesday. I
(24:32):
absolutely love Debo and what he's done for me and
helping me out. We talk all the time, and yeah,
I think he's right. He's doing great right now with
what we ask of him in the offense. He's not
struggling or anything. It's just like I said before about
guys like Ricky or last year with Ayuk for a
little bit. There's just moments I guess throughout seasons where
guys just don't get the ball, just depending on the
(24:52):
scheme or what the defensive scheme is and them taking
guys aways. So I want to get Debo to the
ball every play if I could. I want him to
have a break. I want him to have I want
to have him break all the records as best as possible.
I want Diebo to do Deebo things, and we all
do in this building. So it's just how the games
have gone. But I love my guy and I'm going
(25:14):
to do everything I can to give him the ball.
And that's a great response from Brock Purdy, because to
be fair, Deebo just didn't make the It wasn't the
best response from Deebo when he's talking about this subject
matter to be real and I just it's just amazing
to me to be to be honest when Deebo. When
(25:36):
Deebo makes that comment, because the offense has it's almost
a testament to his talent that defenses are starting to
hard focus him way more now and a lot of that,
a lot of that pressure falls on him because Christian
McCaffrey's hurt, Brandon Aiyuk is hurt, and now you really
only have Debo and George Kittle was even hurt at
(25:58):
one point in time, So a lot of that defense
to focus is gonna come down on Debo. And you
see it right when guys were healthy Debo and I
can only talk about this in terms of fantasy because
I had Debo on fantasy, so him going down to
production didn't actually hurt me. But when you're talking about
Debo in terms of his targets, you look at it
from week eight, Deebo had or let's let'ten do to
(26:21):
week by week breakdown Week one, nine targets, Week two
to ten targets, Week three, he didn't play Week four
against New England. Five targets, Week five Arizona three targets
Week six against the Seahawks five, Week seven, zero, Week eight,
seven by week week ten, six, week eleven, seven, Week twelve, four,
(26:42):
Week thirteen to five targets, Week fourteen, three targets. So
the production, the opportunities have been going down for him.
But they also do use him in the rushing game,
and he got five rushing attempts this past week. Naturally,
because I'm guessing it's just the struggle to get him
the ball, passing the ball because the defense is overloaded
on him right now. It's just part of this is
(27:05):
part of the situation for him. But it is interesting
to me. Interesting to me just that when quarterbacks or
when receivers come out and complain about these things, I'm
just like, man, this is just not for the betterment
of your team. I never really understood. I get where
the message you're trying to send, but it always is
better for these things to be handled behind closed doors.
But I digress talking about So we're still talking about football,
(27:28):
but college football, because you know what, Bill Belichick, for
the first time ever in his professional career, is going
to be the head coach of a college football program. Yes,
this right up comes from NBC. The seventy twenty year
seventy two year old might have been talking about his girlfriend,
who we'll see. The seventy two year old, who worked
(27:50):
in the NFL in some capacity from nineteen seventy five
through twenty twenty three and won six Super Bowls as
the head coach of the New England Patriots and has
never coached college football, has agreed to become the head
coach of the North Carolina Tar Hills football program. Wow wow,
wow wow. This is another I didn't note that comes
(28:10):
from the NBC. Right of college football is more complicated
than it is professional and in his professional counterpart and
in some significant ways. As coaches report to university presidents
and boards of trustees in addition to the athletic department officials,
they're expected to wine, dine, and dazzle donors. They travel
all over the country to recruit teenagers and spend the
rest of the time building relationships with eighteen to twenty
(28:32):
two year olds on their roster's word that they might
transfer out of their program or demand more monetary compensation
at any point. Their general managers, chief marketing officers, and
oh yeah, football coaches at the same time. Now, this
is what Bill Belichick had to say on the Pat
McAfee show when he was asked about the opportunity to
be coaching UNC And he couldn't obviously say at the
(28:55):
point in time that he was going to get the
job whatever. He had to talk as if, oh, you know,
I'm still you know, we're seeing, we'll see what could
possibly happen. He want to come out and openly say
he's interviewing for it, but he says, let me put
this in capital letters. If if I was in a
college program, that college program would be a pipeline to
the NFL for players that had the ability to play
(29:15):
in the NFL. It would be a professional program, training
nutrition scheme, coaching techniques that would transfer to the NFL.
It will be an NFL program at a college level.
I feel very confident that I have the contacts in
the NFL to pave the way for these players that
will have the opportunity to compete in the National Football League.
(29:38):
And that's the way you sell yourself in your program.
Because naturally, right Bill Belichick, to a lot of people,
he's going to be regarded as the greatest head coach
of all time. NFL head coach rather, and so when
you have that type of resume, there's going to be
some players that do want to see what your program
is about and how you can prepare them to that
next level because a lot of times what we even
solved the New England Patriots is that it felt like
(29:58):
they raised the flo or of their talent in so
many ways that you didn't expect from that talent pool
that they had with the Patriots. And so Bill Belichick
now coming to UNC, it's gonna be a big difference. Though. Man,
You're going from coaching grown men that have families that
know they have to perform and are at a professional level,
(30:20):
whereas now and in some degree those grown men, yeah,
you go and try and get them, but your job
is really relegated to that head coach in the coordination
with the general manager, the owner and so on. But
like I read, your college job is so more expansive.
And Nick Saban even bowed out after years of doing
it right round similar age group of Bill Belichick, and
(30:42):
he had a bow out. And so now Bill Belichick's
entering this domain, and you do wonder, Look, man, my
man seventy two years old, he's been doing great on
ESPN coverage of football and appearing with the Mannings on
Monday Night Football and so on. But I guess he
did have that natural issue to get back into into
coaching as a whole. And I felt for Bill because
(31:05):
I felt like last last offseason when everybody was talking about, oh, well,
who's gonna Who's gonna hire Bill? He had interviews with
the new he had interviews with the Atlanta Falcons, there
was discussions about the Dallas Cowboys. It's just teams all
over the place, and naturally, I guess Bill didn't want
to wait to see if he was going to be
(31:25):
able to get an opportunity or what coaching vacancies were
going to open up approaching this offseason. And so now
you're in a situation where he goes down to college football.
And I don't think college football is the motion or
of any sort from the NFL, because college football coaches
get paid bank now, don't get it twisted. I believe
they said this is a five year deal. So yeah,
college football coaches definitely get paid a lot of money.
(31:48):
And it's just interesting to me because for a coach
as storied as Bill Belichick, him never getting that next
opportunity after the Patriots granted. His tenure with the Patriots
didn't end on the best of terms. I know him
and Robert Craft are still in a weird place when
it comes to that relationship. I think he finished for
his last season with the Patriots, they were four and thirteen,
(32:09):
and I think a lot of that, not the four
and thirteen parts. I think at that point you understand
you were going through a rebuilt of some source after
the departure of Tom Brady. But I think the departure
of Tom Brady and to some degree the egos of
some guys, at least what has been reported and talked about,
it got people feeling a type of way about Bill
(32:30):
and the I guess in the way that a lot
of players feel as though, sometimes, Oh, I would like
for this guy to go to bat for me, speak
up for me so I can get this contract, or
whatever the case might be. It felt as though at
one point Tom Brady was pretty much just asking to
be appreciated and be told like yeah, man, like you're
that dude, as opposed to being told and made to
(32:52):
be felt like you're replaceable. And I think that put
a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths when
it came to Bill Bellich check in terms of ownership,
right and so, and at least with the Patriots ownership,
because even at the roast of Tom Brady, it was
a big moment when they got Bill Belichick and Robert
Kraft up there on stage with one another. So you
(33:13):
knew there was something there if that was that since
that was made such a huge, big hubba baloo. And
so going forward now it will be interesting to see
how Bill is able to carry this UNC team. How
is he going to approach coaching college kids. I'm really curious,
and I mean, he outlined his approach and how he
would do things, But now you've got to deal with Nil.
(33:34):
You got to deal with them. I think they I
think there was a report that's going to be twenty
twenty million more dollars available to them for the pursuit
of NIL type of deals and for college to pay
college players and so on. So it's going to be
the whole new realm that Bill just hasn't doven into.
But sometimes with these guys with like players or coaches
or just personalities people in that lane that are so
(33:57):
peak at what they do in one lane easily transferrefer
another but then in another instance it's not right, and
some of the this is where it's not It's like, well,
we remember a guy like Michael Jordan being an owner.
Michael Jordan is, in my opinion, the greatest basketball player
of all time. That man is as far as can
be from being one of the greatest basketball owners of
(34:18):
all time. And he's not having the majority owner of
the owners anymore. He sold his majority ownership stakes, so
that's not that's not even viable at this point for
him to kind of undo that wrong unless unless he
goes and gets apart becomes a majority owner of another team.
But we'll see what happens in that play back. But guys,
before we wrap things up today on this episode the podcast,
(34:41):
do want to talk about the Thursday night football game
that we do have coming up in which we're having
the Rams and the forty nine Ers playing, and it's
the seven and six Rams and the six and seven
forty nine Ers probably about even playing scale. The forty
nine Ers are a very beat up team. The Rams
are beat up on there in the trenches as well,
but I think the forty nine Ers, honestly a lot
of their skill positions, the positions that brought purty really
(35:02):
depends on they're heard at. And they do have some
injuries on their defense as well. So when we're talking
about the spread, it's minus threet favoring the forty nine ers,
And trust me, I get it because on the name
basis the forty nine Ers, a lot of people had
them just helt a higher regard than where the Rams
are seated at, and especially a forty nine Ers team
that's fresh off of coming to going to a Super Bowl,
(35:23):
a lot of people still hold the fight forty nine
Ers in that esteem. So I get the minus three favorite,
But honestly, I'm gonna take the Rams, even though the
Rams can be really inconsistent. When I tell you they
can be so inconsistent, you can go from them losing
a game against the Dolphins that's served up to them
on a platter to them dropping forty four points on
the Buffalo Bills. So that's truly what it is. But
(35:46):
I'll take the Rams honestly on that spread, And in
terms of the for' I'll take the Rams plus three
that's minus one to fifteen odds. Then when you go
to the over unders forty eight and half points. This
is the visional game. This is one of those games. Man,
(36:06):
I think I'm gonna take the under. I'm gonna take
the under, them under the over unders at minus one ten.
I'm gonna take the under. Yeah, I'm gonna take the under,
the under, the unders at the unders at minus one
fifteen rather sorry, the overs at minus one oh five.
But I'm gonna take the under. The money line on
the Rams is plus one thirty five. So I'm gonna
take the money line on the Rams because I think
(36:27):
the Rams are gonna win. But guys, that's gonna do
it for this episode of the podcast. Of course, like
