Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning, Kerrent County. This is the seventeen News at
Sunrise podcast, Your news on your Schedule, presented by Rod
Riquez and associates, and we.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Begin this morning with the latest on the Democrat fire
in the Kern River Canyon. Highway one seventy eight is open,
but not for long. Another closure is scheduled for later
this morning. Fire crews have been working around the clock
since the fire began at two thirty Sunday afternoon, about
(00:39):
ten miles from the base of the canyon. Highway one
seventy eight was closed on Sunday and yesterday, but reopened
just after eight thirty last night. According to cal Fire,
just under nine hundred acres have burned and the fire
is thirty percent contained, but the US four Service says
there's no direct threat to any homes or structures.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
About the weather yesterday, it was about eighty degrees and
you know that in the Cern River Valley and Biggersville area,
when we get into July and August, we're gonna be
approaching triple digits. So this fire is the first one,
you know, for Kerrent County that's been a big one.
If conditions with weather yesterday would have been more extreme,
(01:20):
we wouldn't have seen as much progress.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Again, Highway one seventy eight through the canyon is back open,
but according to HP there is a closure scheduled for
this morning between seven thirty and nine thirty, so just
keep that in mind. And while one Highway one seventy
eight is closed, here's what you need to do to
get between the Cerne River Valley and Bakersfield. From Watford Heights,
(01:43):
you take Highway one fifty five west and continue on
Granite Road for about fifty three miles until you get
to Truckston Avenue. And from Lake Isabella just take Lake
Isabella Boulevard and continue on Calliane Bodfish Road until you
get to Highway fifty eight West. Five oh four is
your time now. And this Saturday, it marks ten months
since a pickup truck crashed in the Kern River Canyon,
(02:05):
sparking the largest wildfire in Kern County history. And there's
still so much we don't know about that driver, Keith
Lee Mulki korened koreeened off Highway one seventy eight near
Democrat Road on July twenty fourth last year. The truck
burst into flames, igniting the barrel fire. That fire incinerated
(02:25):
nearly sixty thousand acres, destroyed more than two hundred and
thirty homes, in businesses, and nearly destroyed the entire historic
community of Hala. The coroner took months to identify Mulk,
who had six prior duys. We've requested the autopsy and
toxicology reports, but still no word on whether Mulk was
(02:47):
in paired behind the wheel that afternoon last July. In
your seventeen Crime Watch, a woman is behind bars this
morning after allegedly starting a house fire during a standoff
with police. This was the scene on black Not Court
in southwest Bakersfield yesterday afternoon. Bakersfel Police responded to assist
(03:08):
arson investigators at a house fire. Investigators soon learned a
woman was barricaded inside the home and that triggered a
response from crisis negotiators and the SWAT team.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
There was threats of a weapon that she claimed to use,
and then she gave a countdown of when a fire
would occur in the house. A fire did start inside
of the house, She ran out the back and a
minor use of force occurred.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Then she was taken into castigation.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
No injuries were reported in this standoff. The identity of
the suspect has not been released at this time in
your seventeen court watch. Now, more than five years after
charges were filed, the trial has finally begun for a
former current County sheriff's deputy accused of sexual misconduct while
on the job. Michael Everett Clark faces felony charges of
(03:59):
sexual battle, assault by a public officer, stalking, and false
imprisonment from violence or with violence. He also faces misdemeanor
charges of making obscene phone calls and touching a person
intimately against their will. Five of Clark's accusers are expected
to take the witness stand during this trial. They include
(04:19):
two women who worked at a fast trip near the
sheriff's headquarters, a woman arrested by Clark, and a woman
who spoke with Clark at her home after she reported
a case of identity theft. Are Jason Kotowski is following
this story. You can find his live blog of the
proceedings on our website kget dot com. We turned now
(04:42):
to news from Capitol Hill, and this morning, President Donald
Trump is making a rare trip to Capitol Hill, urging
healse Republicans to back his sweeping new legislative proposal, a
bill that's already dividing his own party. Washington correspondent Rashad
Hudson has more.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
And Trump is heading to Capitol Hill early this morning
to make a personal pitch to House Republicans to pass
his signature piece of legislation. But it's not just Democrats
who are in opposition. It's some and his own party.
President Donald Trump is turning up the pressure on House
Republicans to pass his One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
If we do get it, we're gonna have the largest
tax decrease in history.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
The sweeping legislation advances key parts of the President's platform.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
If we don't get it, that means the Democrats will
have sappedest.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
It includes tax breaks, but comes with steep cuts, slashing
funding for Medicaid, food assistance programs, and green energy initiatives,
while increasing funding for southern border security. This is arguably
the largest and most comprehensive piece of legislation that Congress
has worked on in probably generations. Democrats called Trump's visit
to Capitol Hill a political stunt, accusing him of strong
(05:56):
arming Republicans and to voting yes.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
The reason why President Trump is coming up to the
Hill is to try to remind Republicans of his view
that they don't work for the American people.
Speaker 7 (06:07):
They work for.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Him and Elon Musk help the altarish today, screw the
middle class tomorrow. That's not beautiful, that's ugly.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
And Speaker Johnson says the House is on track to
pass the bill by their Memorial Day deadline. Reporting in
Washington Rashat Hudson back to you.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
The Supreme Court is allowing President tromp to revoke protected
status for more than three hundred thousand Venezuelans, which could
expose them to deportation. The decision reverses a Biden administration
ruling that allowed Venezuelans temporary protected status because of the
political instability in the country. Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noum
(06:49):
ended the designation in February, but a federal judge in
California block or move at the end of March. The
ruling will affect a group of more than three hundred
thousand vnus Suaelians whose protection would have expired in April.
It also affects another three hundred thousand whose protections are
expiring in September after a two hour phone call with
(07:13):
Russian president Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Trump says ceasefire
negotiations to end the war in Ukraine will start immediately.
In a social media post, President Trump said he relayed
the plan to Ukraine's President Voltimore Zelenski. The Kremlin acknowledges
the process will take time, and Trump indicated he was
not ready to join Europe with fresh sanctions to pressure Moscow.
(07:37):
Putin thanked Trump for supporting the resumption of direct talks
between Moscow and Kiev after the two sides met in
Turkey last week for their first face to face negotiations
since March twenty twenty two.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
In other news.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Around the nation, Day seven of testimony will get underway
this morning in the Sean Diddycomb's sex trafficking trial. Yesterday,
jurors heard from HC. Combes's former assistant, David James and
Carrie Morgan, a former friend of Cassie Ventura, both testify
they witnessed the music mogul's abusive behavior towards Ventura. Carrie
(08:12):
Morgan claims she once saw Comb's drag Ventura by the
hair during a trip to Jamaica. Morgan claims he once
attacked her as well, grabbing her by the neck and
hitting her with a wooden hangar. Other witnesses set to
testify this week include Cassie Ventura's mother, a former personal chef,
and a man who participated in Combe's alleged sex parties.
(08:36):
There's been another outage involving Newark Liberty International Airport. The
FAA says the Philadelphia Air Traffic Control Center responsible for
handling those flights, lost radio frequencies for two seconds at
eleven thirty five yesterday morning. Officials say all aircraft were
safely separated during the outage. This is the fourth incident
(08:57):
affecting Newark since April twenty eight. The airport has been
dealing with equipment and staffing issues. The FAA says upgrades
to the nation's air traffic control system are currently underway.
Welcome back to the San Diego Humane Society's care for
an orphan bear cub includes having the cub interact with
(09:19):
a person in a bear suit. The cub was approximately
two months old when it arrived at the Humane Society.
It's the youngest black bear cub the San Diego Humane
Society has ever taken in campers found the cub April
twelfth in the Los Padres National Force It's northwest of
Los Angeles. The care for the cub also includes having
(09:40):
it play with the stuffed animal bear. The goal is
to return the cub to the wild at a later date.
Speaker 8 (09:46):
Is that cub really buying that?
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Well, that's so say that it helps? Yeah, So, I mean,
I'm not, you know, discrediting what they're doing. I just
always thought that, you know, animals they have like with
sand and they can since like since other other things.
Speaker 8 (10:03):
Yeah, but you know, hey, love what they're doing.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
They know what they're doing, and I think that's great
that they're going to release it back into the wild,
you know, at a later date.
Speaker 8 (10:12):
Look at him play with the other Baron's cube.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
And we turn to Kern's dog crisis. The Bakersfield Animal
Care Center is looking for short term fosters to help
save lives. These are just some of the dogs that
will be headed to Canada next month if enough fosters
step up to hold them until transport day, which will
be June twelfth or thirteenth. Fostering opens up kennel space
(10:35):
for the mini dogs that come into the city shelter
every day. Once in Canada, the pumps the pups will
go into foster or adoptive homes right away. If you
would like to foster and help save a life, you
can stop by the shelter on Mountain Vernon Avenue during
normal business hours. Everything you need is supplied by the shelter.
You just have to open up your home. So again
(10:56):
it's a short term foster situation and those dogs will
be headed to Canada June twelfth or thirteenth. Now to
news from around Town, The eleventh annual Thousand Flags Event
returns to the Park at Riverwalk this weekend. Volunteers and
the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club raise one one thousand American
flags in honor of Memorial Day and new this year,
(11:20):
there's going to be a free patriotic concert Saturday night
featuring the Veterans Family Band, The Habits, and the Kern
County Pipe Band. There will be a beer garden and
food available for purchase, plus the inaugural one thousand Flags
Fun Run will be held on Sunday. Registration is forty dollars,
which includes a medal and a T shirt. Well she
(11:42):
was a fighter and an inspiration who lost her battle
to cancer nearly a year ago, and now our friend
Delilah Love, the namesake of the Hey There Delilah Foundation,
will be honored with a golf tournament. Delilah lost her
battle to neuroblastoma, a cancer that attacks nerve cells, two
months shy of her tenth birthday on July twenty first.
(12:03):
Last year. In her honor, Delilah's mother started the Hey
Their Delilah Foundation to help the families of children stricken
with cancer.
Speaker 9 (12:13):
She was just beautiful. She wanted to help people, and
because she wanted to help people.
Speaker 7 (12:17):
We decided that we.
Speaker 9 (12:18):
Weren't gonna let what she wanted to do die, and
so together with Stephanie, we continued doing what she wanted
to do, and that's just raising money to continue to
help people battling cancer in our community.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
To help with that goal, the Hey Their Delilah Foundation
is holding a golf tournament fundraiser. It's happening Monday, June second,
at the Bakersfield Country Club. Admission starts at six hundred
and seventy five dollars for a four person team.
Speaker 10 (12:48):
I'm proud to be part of the bakershild community, the culture,
the arts, and the music I'm so glad my parents
taught me to speak Spanish and to honor our heritage
by singing traditional music. As an attorney with Rodriguez and Associates,
I'm proud to work in harmony with our community, helping
(13:10):
others and celebrating what makes us U neque at Rodriguez
in Associates.
Speaker 11 (13:14):
When you need us, We'll be here for you.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Partisan divide over the new congressional budget is setting the
stage for a contentious twenty twenty six election cycle. In
Kerrent County, seventeen's political reporter Jenny h breaks it all
down for us.
Speaker 7 (13:30):
I'm trying to see as many patients as I can
because Congress is trying to cut their medical Tell Congress
in Valadeo to stop these cuts on medical.
Speaker 12 (13:40):
This is assembly Woman doctor Jasmine Baines, a Democrat from
Delano representing California's thirty fifth Assembly district. But in this
healthcare ad, gez just.
Speaker 7 (13:49):
I'm doctor jazz Mate Baines, and I'm a family doctor.
Speaker 12 (13:52):
This ad is all over the airwaves, paid for by
a political action committee called Healthcare Saves Lives, funded by
SEIU Colifornia and local health care and home care unions
a spokesperson tell seventeen News the ad airing in Kern
Kings and to Larry Counties called six figures.
Speaker 10 (14:09):
She's running for Congress.
Speaker 12 (14:11):
That's political analyst Tracy Leach's takeaway. Baines collaborating with a
pack is a pre campaign of sorts. The teamwork possible
because she hasn't declared candidacy yet.
Speaker 7 (14:22):
An independent expenditure is just that it's supposed to be
independent from the campaign that they are supporting. This group
is supporting, so it.
Speaker 9 (14:30):
Would be far more difficult, if not impossible, to do
in a full blown election cycle.
Speaker 12 (14:35):
Rico Mendez, chief elected officer of the SEIU Local five
twenty one, says quote, While Valadeo is playing games with
the lives of children, seniors, and veterans in the valley,
doctor Baines is actively working to save their lives. Baines
did not respond to requests for comment on a potential
congressional run. Let's break down the bigger picture the politics.
(14:55):
Democrats like Baines have voice concern over Republicans new budget
place uncoined President Donald Trump's Big Beautiful Bill reductions to
federal spending our proposed sparking concerns programs like Medicaid and
Medicare could be.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Cut cancer diseases.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
They don't care what your political affiliation is. We shouldn't
have to have.
Speaker 6 (15:18):
Ads placed, We shouldn't have to have folks going out
and knocking on doors.
Speaker 12 (15:22):
Well, Ladea will be put to the test this week
as the bill is set to be voted on again.
He voted yes and the first vote for the bill
was absent for the second vote and says quote, It's
disappointee but non surprising to see Democrat activists resort to
fear mongering. Nothing has been finalized, and as we continue
to work through the reconciliation process, I'll keep fighting to
protect access to care for hard working Valley families.
Speaker 7 (15:45):
Is going to have to be very careful if he wants.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
To get reelected.
Speaker 12 (15:48):
Jenny seventeen News.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Now to news from around the state. In a parole
hearing scheduled for June thirteenth for Eric and Lyle Menendez
has now been postponed. That hearing comes after the brother's
recent re sentencing for the nineteen eighty nine shotgun murders
of their parents. The brothers had been serving life in
prison without the possibility of parole, but their sentences were
reduced to fifty years to life in prison, making them
(16:15):
immediately eligible for parole now. The hearing is scheduled for
August twenty first and twenty second. The delay is due
to a state law which requires a ninety day period
to inform victims of upcoming parole hearings. Five point thirty
seven is your time now and the Getty Villa is
(16:35):
set to reopen after flames from the Palisades Fire threatened
the iconic museum and cause damage to the outer grounds.
The villa will reopen to the public starting June twenty
seventh on a limited schedule to minimize traffic on pch
Reservations will be required, with only five hundred visitors allowed
each day. Although the villa building and artwork were spared
(16:57):
from the flames, the museum says both indoor and outdoor
spaces were deep clean during the closure, along with the
removal of thirteen hundred fire damaged trees. An act of
kindness in Connecticut is going viral on TikTok. The video
shows two teens on a date night buying flowers and
(17:18):
writing notes and leaving them on the windshields of cars
parked at Hartford Hospital. Amanda Pitts spoke to those teens
and a woman who was on the receiving end.
Speaker 13 (17:31):
One step at a time, get better, You'll get through this.
Speaker 11 (17:36):
That's what two teens seniors at Southington High School wrote
on note cards during a date night in mid April.
Speaker 13 (17:41):
I saw TikTok that was like similar, and we had
nothing to do, and I really wanted to do it
as like our four month anniversary day.
Speaker 11 (17:49):
They bought flowers to go with the notes and drove
to Hartford Hospital where they went car to car putting
the pick me ups on people's windshields, and.
Speaker 13 (17:56):
Then we gave away the extra flowers to the ladywork
in the stands.
Speaker 11 (18:00):
They recorded the whole thing and posted it on TikTok.
Speaker 13 (18:03):
We didn't expect it to go viral. And how much
does that right now? Like five hundred k views and
around one hundred kikes.
Speaker 11 (18:10):
It was a small act of kindness, but one that
touched so many people, from employees to visitors. One woman
who says she was here visiting her daughter at Connecticut Children.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
She was there for ten days actually, and I want
to go home after a very very difficult day and
when I go to the park and I saw like
two purple flowers on the car with a note. It
was surprise.
Speaker 11 (18:36):
The note amelsubaty God said you will be okay.
Speaker 6 (18:40):
Someone feel my pain without knowing anything, and he told
me you are not alone.
Speaker 11 (18:47):
The TikTok reached so many people. It ended up on
Doubet's daughters. For you Paige, who showed it to her mom,
who got to see the teens responsible for making her day.
Speaker 6 (18:55):
I want to tell them that just keep going like
so well, you made our life like beautiful.
Speaker 11 (19:03):
They hope it makes others want to do the same.
Speaker 13 (19:05):
I hope that it inspires others to do better and
be the better version of themselves and help people who
need help during hard times.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Amani pits with that story that is just it's really
really it's a really great story, and I hope it
inspires all of us to do those small acts of kindness.
They can really go a long way. Welcome back, and
whether by plane, train, or car, Americans are expected to
get away in record numbers over the long Memorial Day weekend.
Triple A is reporting more than forty five million people
(19:38):
will travel at least fifty miles from their homes between
Thursday and Monday, I will be one of them. Most
people expected to hit their highways, with eighty seven percent
of travelers driving to their Memorial Day destinations. The worst
holiday traffic will be the Thursday and Friday afternoon periods
and evenings, and then on Memorial Day itself, as you
(20:00):
can imagine usually you know, CHP says the I five
will be just horrendous pretty much after five o'clock on
Memorial Day on that Monday, So just keep that in mind.
I have been stuck in that before. It is it is,
it is awful. So prepare paccupations, as they say. And
(20:20):
if you're planning to go out of town this Memorial Day,
be sure you to fill up, and I think you'll
be happy because fuel savings platform gas Buddy shows that
the national average price for a gallon of gas is
expected to be three dollars and eight cents this Memorial Day.
This would be the lowest gas price on Memorial Day
since twenty twenty one, and lower than the average of
(20:43):
three dollars and fifty eight cents last year. Gas Buddy
even projects prices will average three dollars and two cents
a gallon through Labor Day. A reason for the dropping
prices has been because President Trump is pressuring pressuring Saudi
Arabia to produce more oil. Triple A expects nearly forty
million people to travel by car this Memorial Day weekend. Now,
(21:06):
of course, those are the national averages. Keep in mind
we are in California, it's a little higher. So our
website kget dot com tracks the lowest prices in the
Bakersfield area thanks to gasbuddy dot com, and today the
lowest price we could find is four dollars seven cents
a gallon, and you can find it at the quick
stop on Edison Highway in East Bakersfield. Just remember those
(21:27):
prices change often, so before you head out the door,
before you fill up, just go to our website KGT
dot com click on the traffic section to find the
lowest price near you. GB you what you're doing for
a Memorial Day weekend?
Speaker 8 (21:40):
Well, first off, three dollars, just above three dollars. I
don't know where you find.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
That, I mean, not's California.
Speaker 8 (21:46):
Well yeah, but my parents fu in Washington State and
we're not far off from the four dollars, So it's
just not California. It seems like the West Coast. I
think in my hometown it's like three eighty something a gallon,
So hopefully you can find that just above three dollars
a gallon.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
