Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning, Kerrent County. This is the seventeen News at
Sunrise podcast, Your News on your Schedule, presented by Rodriguez
and associates.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
We begin this morning with yet another fire at a
motel that's been the scene of several in the past.
The Long Mirage Motel on Union Avenue caught fire just
after eight last night. You can see the upper floor
engulfed in flames. Now it's unknown what started this fire.
The motel was shut down back in January by the
Health Department for multiple code violations. There have been at
(00:39):
least two other suspicious fires at the Lomorrage Motel this year. Meantime,
another fire at a Los Angeles County refinery sent flames
into the sky overnight. This is chopper video from our
sister station KNBC Inla The fire erupted around nine thirty
last night at the cheval On refinery in El Segundo.
(01:02):
Witnesses say they heard a loud bang before seeing the
orange glow from the facility. It is not known at
this time how this fire started. Authorities in La County
say no injuries have been reported and no evacuation orders
are in effect. However, neighbors have been advised to stay indoors.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Now to a signature issue here at seventeen News, we
call Kern Sober reality. That reality is that far too
many people are driving drunk or under the influence of
drugs right here in Kern County. The latest suspected a
dui crash that took the life of a six year
old Bakersfield girl. Seventeen's Vincent Devanti has this message from
the little girl's family.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Six year old asthma At Mayl had an adventurous spirit
and was friendly to everyone, often walking up to strangers
at the grocery store. She also loved animals, having just
competed in mutton busting at the Kern County Fair just
last week. Her grieving family is now breaking their se
about Asmarete's life and her impact to those around her.
(02:04):
In a statement, her parents shared how this tragic incident
has affected their family. They said, quote as Morett had
her whole life ahead of her. She was joyful, adventurous
and full of life. In one instant, it was stolen.
No family should ever have to plan a funeral for
a six year old because someone chose to drive impaired.
(02:25):
We're speaking out so no other parent has to feel
this kind of pain. If you care about your life
and the lives of others, you shouldn't drive under the
influence ever. End quote. Amba Morales lost a son and
a daughter to a drunk driver and says the effects
of a fatal dui on a family is beyond life changing.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Having to bury your child is definitely life changing.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Hard.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
It's very hard to sit with that.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
I can only imagine what mom and everyone's going.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Through right now.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Earlier this week, Seesar Magania Medoza appeared in court where
he pleaded not guilty to charges of gross faire icular manslaughter,
driving under the influence, and speeding. Investigators say mcgagnia Mendoza
slammed into a white sedan carrying a woman, six year
old Asmaret and an infant or early Sunday morning, as
Morette was taken to the Orange County Children's Hospital, where
(03:15):
she passed away the next day. Attorney Matt Clark says
that this incident has struck a nerve with the community.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
It's like the easiest crime to prevent, and it seems
to me that we've reached a point in our community
where folks are fed up. I mean, if you look
at the social media response, especially to this crash this
past weekend. People are angry and they should be.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
As Morete's family is urging the community to come together
and sign an online petition urging lawmakers to implement tougher
dui laws. The petition was created in response to the
fatal dui that killed Maxim desre Moody in March.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
Really trying to get ten thousand signatures so that we
can take that to our local statewide representatives and asked
them to go up to Sacramento, meet with their colleagues
and really try to institute change in the way that
we sentence people who have been convicted of DUIs and
see if that can't bring about some change.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
As well.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
As of news time, the dui petition has surpassed seven
thousand signatures. Vincent Demante, seventeen News.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Turning out to your seventeen Court Watch this morning. A
teenager is said to be sentenced today in the stabbing
death of a man in northwest Bakersfield, and the victim's
family says they are outraged a plea deal was reached
in this case. Twenty year old Lawrence Lavos was at
a party on Stoneerver Court when a fight broke out
on October sixth, twenty twenty four. Cell Phone video shows
(04:50):
four men fighting with Labos, who was stabbed once in
the neck during the altercation. He died less than an
hour later. Deputy's arrested a nineteen year old Bradley par
He was originally charged with first degree murder and assault,
but after a year of the case going through the
court system, a plea deal was offered. Perez pleaded no
contest to involuntary manslaughter and now faces a maximum of
(05:14):
six years in prison.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
Have The murderer claimed that this is self defense and
that my brother deserves to die this way.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
It's awful, it's horrible.
Speaker 6 (05:24):
So we told him from the very beginning, we don't
want a plea deal. We want this to go to trial.
My son was murdered, my son was jumped three other guys.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
We reached out to the District Attorney's office to ask
why the plea deal was accepted, and they responded saying
the statute aligns with the facts of the crime. Head
to kget dot com to read the full statement.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Turning now to your seventeen health watch, October is Safe
Sleep Awareness Month. There are thousands of sudden unexplained infandets
in the US every year. In twenty twenty eight, there
were one hundred and ninety two SIDS deaths just in California.
It's also consistently one of the top three causes of
death and children in Kern County and first five Kern
(06:11):
is working to raise awareness.
Speaker 7 (06:14):
The keys that you can remember is the ABC's of
Safe Sleep Alone that your baby should sleep alone on
their back in a crib.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Other risks associated with SIDS included letting your baby get overheit,
overheated at using weighted blankets, and using rockers.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
October is also Breast cancer Awareness month. Last Night Events
Health hosted its annual Vipink event to raise awareness and
honor local survivors. It was a sea of pink at
the AIS Cancer Center as the community came together for
this important cause. Billed as the breast event of the Year,
vi Pink honor survivors, celebrates the legacy of those who
(06:57):
have passed away and raises awareness about the importance of
early detection.
Speaker 8 (07:02):
We wanted to take away that having breast cancer is
not a death sentence. We can treat it, especially if
we catch you early and so if we get you
yearly mammograms, that's the only way we're going to find it,
and we'll catch you early, we'll treat and you have
a long chance of a long survivorship after that.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Organizers say only half of women in current County get
regular mammograms, and they're hoping to encourage more women to
take care of their health.
Speaker 9 (07:27):
I'm proud to be part of the bakersial community, the culture,
the arts, and the music. I'm so glad my parents
taught me to speak Spanish and to honor our heritage
by singing traditional music. As an attorney with Rodriguez and Associates,
I'm proud to work in harmony with our community, helping
(07:49):
others and celebrating what makes us unique.
Speaker 4 (07:52):
At Rodriguez and Associates.
Speaker 9 (07:54):

Speaker 7 (08:05):
And our costumes are set, but I'm giving no hens.
See you have to come out and see us on
the thirtieth. All right, take it outside right now and
you can see along the ninety nine. It is dry,
but if you're headed along the fifty age, we've got
some showers out that way and that's going to be
the cases we go throughout the morning for all of
current county, scattered showers, sixty five degrees on the temperature
right now, we've got a northwest wind at ten up
(08:27):
to the north sixty three and delno shafter in sixty
four into the mountains, fifties and sixties to hatch be
at fifty two. Here's look at satellite radar and you
can see some of those scattered showers just to the east.
You can also look at our winds, see how they're red,
and we've got some winds picking up into the mountains.
That's going to increase as we go throughout the day.
Also low lying clouds over the grapevines. So if you
(08:47):
are going to be traveling to the south today, just
keep that mind low beams on and give yourself plenty
of time and space between the cars in front of you.
All right, let's take a look at the regional view
and this is the front we were talking about, and
it is now pushing in and as we go throughout
the day, these showers will be in place for the
morning and then heading off to the east throughout the
afternoon with clearing skies in place for US as well.
(09:09):
Southlake Tahoe is clear right now thirty eight degrees, but
this afternoon there is a chance of some isolated thunderstorms
up to the north as well, and then off to
the northern part of Nevada throughout the afternoon. Here's a
good daytime highs seventy one in Sacramento, only forty nine
in Tao today. It's gonna be cool there, seventy four
in Fresno and seventies to the south. So all areas
(09:30):
of California getting a cool down as this system pushes
through the area. And once this exits will get a
little bit of ridging the building behind it, so temperatures
will warm up as we get into about that Sunday timeframe.
So scattered showers for US early today. For all of
Kerran County, we're not going to pick up a bunch.
The trace to three hundred cent inch ever lucky in
(09:50):
the valley. For the mountains a trace to five hundred
seven inch, so not much of an impact, just enough
to maybe settle the dust. As we take a look.
The air quality good today AQI four fifty seven in
Frasier Park. We'll look for the winds out of the
north five to fifteen. For the valley today, scattered showers
early than afternoon, clearing seventy four. In Bakersfield seventy two
(10:11):
and Delano Buttonwillow at seventy five. And then for the
mountains fifty eight and to Hatchbee Bear Valley at fifty six.
Windy with winds gusting around fifty throughout the afternoon. For
the Curnimber Valley we've got sixties forty nine shirly meadows,
winds gusting around forty five. And then for the desert today,
scattered showers, early than afternoon, clearing and winds gusting around
forty five miles per hour. I have sixty nine in Mohab.
