Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning, Kern County. This is the seventeen News at
Sunrise podcast, Your News on your Schedule, presented by Rod
Riquez and associates.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
To begin with news breaking overnight, at least one person
is dead after a crash in south Bakersfield. Let's take
you out there right now. This is a live look
at Highway ninety nine and Panama Lane. Now we don't
have a lot of the details yet, but California Highway
Patrol traffic page shows a vehicle crashed around at three
point fifteen this morning, triggering a closure of the on
(00:36):
ramp to northbound ninety nine from westbound Panama Lane. That
page shows that first responders were performing CPR on a
passenger at the scene, and the coroner was called shortly after.
We've reached out to CHP for more details but have
not heard back yet. We will keep you posted as
we learn more.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Turning down Toway's signature issue here at seventy two News,
we call Kern sober reality. Fatal DUI crashes are on
the rise in Kerrent County, with the most recent heartbreaking
case taking the life of a six year old girl
in Bakersfield over the weekend. The suspected driver in that
crash said to face a judge later. Today, seventeen's Vincent
DeVante breaks down the numbers.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Quiet Sunday morning was cut short for a baker's Field
family when a suspected drunk driver crashed into the family's
white Toyota Camry on East Panama Lane. The suspected drunk driver,
now identified as twenty year old Caesar mcgona, hit the
family's car at high speeds. Three passengers were in the
white Camri at the time of the crash. This included
(01:36):
a six year old girl who has passed away from
her injuries.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
Just heartbroken for the family. It definitely sits heavy when
you hear things like that, especially when it involves children.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Amber Morales has been involved with the organization Mothers Against
Drunk Driving since the death of her two kids, Calebin Madison,
and her husband in twenty eighteen. She says the effects
of a fatal DUI on a family is beyond life changing.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
Having to bury your child is definitely life changing, hard.
It's very hard to sit with that. I can only
imagine what mom and everyone's going through right now.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, twenty twenty five is
seen some of the highest numbers of fatal duys in
the city. In twenty twenty four, there were fourteen duy fatalities.
As of September of this year, there are twenty four.
Local attorney Matt Clark says that this dangerous trend needs
to change next.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
That is an alarming statistic, it is It's something that
should be embarrassing to our community, and the community as
a whole should really we got to look ourselves in
the mirror and say what is wrong around here and
how do we put an end to this.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
Morales has one piece of advice to members of the
community who want the high DUI rate to end, go
out and do something well.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
I definitely encourage people to stop just posting it on Facebook.
I would say, you know, doing something means speaking up
that if you see somebody drink a twenty once spear
and then getting behind the wheel, that you know you
should say something at that point. You know that's using
your voice, you know, using your voice, speaking up doing
those things.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
A GoFundMe has been started to help the family affected
by Sunday's deadly crash. As of news time, the page
has collected two hundred and seventy two donations amounting to
thirteen thousand, seven hundred and one dollars. You can find
the link to the GoFundMe on our website at kget
dot com. Vincent Amante seventeen News.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
In your seventeen follow up file this morning. It took
nine months, but prosecutors have now filed charges against two
men for the death of a Bakersfield man near a
downtown bar. One of the defendants was arraigned yesterday on
assault charges in connection to the January killing. Seventeenth Connrador
was in court and spoke with the victim's family were
with him.
Speaker 7 (03:47):
He was he was in high spirits. He was good, great,
great night. He was telling everybody loves us all the time,
like every minute. Just he was just in he just
wasn't in a bad mood that night. It's just like
it's crazy that he never got to talk to him
the next.
Speaker 8 (04:01):
Morning, you know. On January fifth, forty six year old
Rolando Andaya went out for a night of comedy and
drinking with his brother Mario Reyes and his son Rolando
and Aya, ending the night at the Mint located on
Nineteenth Street. Reyes and Anaia's son left while he stayed.
Speaker 7 (04:18):
We all loved him, we all know what a good
guy he was.
Speaker 8 (04:21):
And Anaya's family said he got into a confrontation with
four others as he left the bar. He was attacked
just down the street on the thirteen hundred block of
nineteenth Street. His official cause of death was blunt force trauma.
It took nine months, but two arrests were made.
Speaker 9 (04:38):
If you were to see him that night, or to
see him even at his viewing, you can tell from everything,
from all the evidence and everything that it was not
just two guys that did this.
Speaker 8 (04:47):
Twenty three year old George Fierra was arraigned on one
charge of assault causing great bodily injury. Prosecutors say his
accomplice his twenty two year old Mark Hernandez. Hernandez was
arraigned last week on charges of a voluntary manslaughter, assault
and battery.
Speaker 9 (05:03):
He was already not responsive and they continued to beat him.
To me, I feel like manslaughter. Involuntary manslaughter is not justice.
Speaker 8 (05:12):
The Ania family says they have had multiple meetings with
prosecutors who told them they cannot charge Hernandez and Fierra
with murder. The Ania family says the DA's office reasoning
is that Anaya had a heart attack before he died.
The delays in the arrests and in the case is
frustrating for the family Anaya left behind.
Speaker 7 (05:32):
I feel like if my dad was a cop, or
if my dad was a law enforcement they would have
had a whole man hunt for him, for the guys
that did this in him.
Speaker 10 (05:38):
And they just not just charged to church off.
Speaker 7 (05:41):
They just pushed it off for nine months. And now
they're out on bail and it's just bail low beilbon,
and it's just ridiculous.
Speaker 8 (05:49):
But there is a new hope for the family with
a new prosecutor assigned to the case.
Speaker 9 (05:54):
The prosecutor that stepped in today. She seems like she's
on top of her game, so hopefully things will make
change from here.
Speaker 8 (06:01):
Connor Door seventeen News.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Meantime, seventeen News has learned an assistant basketball coach at
CSUB charge with pimping, pandering, and child pornography is no
longer an employee of the university. Last month, the Bakersfield
Police Department received an anonymous tip that Kevin Mays was
collecting money from a woman who was being prostituted by him.
Officers arrested Mays earlier this month. They then searched his
(06:26):
car and home, where they found firearms and quote large
amounts of marijuana and methainfetamine. Mays has pleaded not guilty
to the eleven charges filed against him. Court filing show
investigators were looking through May's cell phone when they found
more than three thousand files with titles consistent with child pornography.
The findings led to more charges against Mays. He pleaded
(06:48):
not guilty to those child pornography charges and is due
in court October twenty ninth.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
In Pedestrian safety is a signatory sue here at seventeen News,
we now know the idea of a man who was
struck not once, but by two vehicles earlier this month.
It happened two weeks ago in near Union Avenue in
Lo Ma Linda Drive. Alvino Armbula was walking outside of
a crosswalk when a vehicle struck him. The driver stayed
cooperated with investigators and did not show signs of impairment. Then,
(07:19):
when Armbulah was still down in the roadway, a second
vehicle struck him, but the second driver took off and
has not yet been identified. Armbulau did die at the scene.
Bakersfield Police say the second driver was in a silver
or light colored coup possibly a Honda Civic. The car
may have damage to the front bumper. If you have
any information, please call the Bakersfield Police Departments Traffic Desk.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Kevin's here now to take a look at our forecast.
Speaker 11 (08:17):
Yeah, yesterday it was in a bad day, but still
a little too warm for me. I was trying to
do Halloween decorations outside and I was like, man, it's
just hot in that direct sun and it was only
in the lower eighties. So I have to bite the
bullet today because it is going to be in the
eighties again, and I have to have my decorations done
outside by the first So that's what I'll probably be
doing today tomorrow to get it all done.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
But is creeping up tomorrow.
Speaker 11 (08:40):
I know right outside we do have some cloud cover
to start off our day here. We are going to
see that throughout the morning. The afternoon we get to
see more sunshine. Sixty seven degrees on the temperature right now,
a north northwest wind at seven miles per hour. We're
at sixty five in delay No. Sixty six in shafter
and then for the mountains forties, fifties and sixties. The
cool spot is Frasier Park at forty two fifty four
(09:01):
to have to be and Lake Isabella at sixty And
you can see here on satellite some clouds pushing through
the area right now. Again that'll be the case this morning,
then thinning out as we go throughout the afternoon. Bilbil
on Highway fifty eight toward Bakersfield, you can see a
little bit that cloud cover out there. And as we
take a look at the regional view, the Boischer though
stayed well to the north. We've got some isolated thunderstorms
along the Siercrest moving into parts of Nevada. And this
(09:23):
system is exiting, then we get the cooler air behind it,
and then another system is coming in right behind that,
still a dry one as we take a look at
forty seven degrees, some clouds out there right now there
other way up to fifty five today, so mild temperatures
there eighty two and Fresno and then we've got some
seventies down to the south. Still very nice out of
Vegas at eighty nine this afternoon. So this front's pushing
(09:45):
on through. We're gonna get some cooling with it. The
secondary system is right behind it again, not bringing any rain,
but it may be brings some cloud cover. In the
extended forecast. In terms of rain, we will see some
showers northbound, just not around the Bakersfield area, about seven
hundred seven inch maybe through Fresno, twelve hundred seven inch
in the Bayry five hundred seven an inch in Sacramento,
and that's through Friday at eleven PM. I also want
(10:08):
to touch on the hurricane season. Right now, we are
tracking two. We've got Humberto and Amelda. Those are the
two storms that we're tracking right now in the Atlantic.
And here's what we're looking at Hurricane Amelda right now,
Category one good news is this is going to make
its way offshore again not hitting the United States. And
then we've got Humburdo right now and this system again
(10:30):
not going to impact the United States. We're getting some
rain out of this, but nothing severe, so that is
great news bringing it back home. Eric quality today, good
to be monitor QI fifty four, sixty five in Frasier Park,
sixty eight Lebec today. For the valley, we're looking at
the eighties for the most part. Some seventies out there
as well. Seventy nine in Delanno, eighty two in Bakersfield,
eighty one for Button Willow, and then for the mountains,
(10:51):
some morning clouds and then afternoon sun sixty two in
Bear Valley we're looking at sixty nine and to hatch
Me today, winds are going to gust right around thirty
five in the afternoon for the Curt Niverer Valley, seventy
seven in Weldon and Kernville Lake Isbella, you're at seventy four.
Great temperatures out of Shirley Meadows at fifty nine. The
breeze picking up this afternoon for you, gusting around thirty five.
(11:11):
Out in the desert, we're looking at eighty seven. In
Ridgecrest Mohave, you're at eighty whin's gusting around thirty five.
Sunny sky is expected, and your extended forecast looks like this.
Temperatures are all over the place. We're in the eighties
through Thursday, and then that secondary system coming in by
the end of the week will bring us into the seventies.
We will see a few clouds in and out back
in the eighties by Sunday, and then we take a
look at the mountain forecast and you can see the sun.
(11:33):
Then we've got some clouds coming in on Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
and you can see these temperatures into the sixties and
seventies throughout the seven day period and then for the
Curnibber Valley tomorrow seventy eight. But you get a pretty
good cool down on Friday to sixty eight, back in
the seventies as we head into the weekend.
