Speaker 1 (00:03):
Well, Welcome everybody. I am Kim Evans. I am the
owner of two Gorgeous Integrated Health and Wellness of twenty
six years. I'm also a podcaster and an author, esthetician, a
beauty a business and holistic wellness coach. Welcome to the
(00:26):
Videous show on Inspired Conversations with Kim Evans, the host,
and I'm also the guest today, So welcome and thank
you for being here viewers, and thank you also for listeners.
I am so excited today to present the Vidious Show,
and I was trying to figure out what I wanted
(00:48):
to share on this vidieth show, and I had some
notes and I decided to just go ahead and just
be free will and just go ahead and speak from
my heart. So first off, I just wanted to say
thank you for those people who have in viewers have
supported the show thus far. Thank you for all of
my clients that have supported to Gorgeous Integrated Health and
(01:11):
Wellness over twenty six years. But more importantly, sometimes the
main person that we don't give thanks to or forgive
is ourselves, And so I have to give myself all
round of applause to say hey girl, hey you did
(01:32):
it so Welcome to the fiftieth podcast show with Kim Evans.
You know, twenty six years ago, I started out as
a struggling makeup artist in the Bay Area, strugg Alaine.
Did not know what I wanted to do at that time.
(01:53):
And I remember my first gig was with a friend
of mine who we are still very good friends today,
and that is Karina Casper. So, Karina, I know you
listening to this podcast show. My hat goes off to you, girl.
We're still very good friends over two decades because Karna
(02:13):
was the first one that saw the vision in me.
Karna was the first one that saw the talent within myself.
And I remember it was Dell Tooney and they were
doing these things called the Bridle shows. For those of
you who used to go to Bridle shows back in
the day, they did these magnificent Bridle shows. Dell Tooney,
(02:33):
Oh my god, what God bless you deal was producing
a show. It was in Walnut Creek, and so I said,
I'm going to go. I took my makeup kit and
I said, you know what, I'm going to go to
the show and I'm going to prove my talent and
I'm going to be a makeup artist in this show.
I get there, it's Walnut Creek. I go down and
was at that at that time, it's called the Double
(02:54):
Tree Hotel. I think it's still called it, you know,
it's called the Marriott now. I walk downstairs and they said, hey,
go talk to the main woman in charge of the
makeup artists, Krena cast for And I'll never forget this day.
We still laugh about this. And it was about all
these makeup chairs that was just ready, right, just all
these makeup chairs and these models. And I said, hey,
(03:16):
I'm Kim Evans. You know I've been a makeup artist
for x mine years. In that time, I had got
my experience from land Combe. I was doing semi mind work,
I was doing Mary Kay. So I was already in
the essence and the line of being a makeup artist.
And so I had my kid. I was ready. The
(03:37):
word says, you gotta be ready for an opportunity, and
have an opportunity to be ready. So I was ready.
I had my kid, I had my brushes, I have
my foundations, I had everything. I said, Karina, I'd love
to be a makeup artist in the show, and you
need to work with me. She says, I'm packing your
kid right now. I got those two models right there.
(03:58):
You go over there and you make it. Let me
what you're doing now. It wasn't about getting paid, It
wasn't anything about that. I just says, I'm ready. I
want you to see my talent. I want you to
see what I can do. I unpacked it. A beautiful
woman came and she sat down. I did the next one.
Karina says, do that one over there. I went over there.
I did the next one. Karina said, do that one
(04:18):
over there. I think by the time she got some
free label out of labor out of me. Yes she did, Yes,
she did. I did about maybe five models for her
on that day, on the whim, on the win, one
after another after another. After see, you got to be
ready for opportunities and for opportunity to come to you,
and you not be ready. I have my kid ready.
I was already practicing my sword, I was already practicing.
(04:39):
I was already doing makeup purse. But the main thing
that I that I had when I walked in there
was confidence. I had confidence inspired confidence. As a matter
of fact, by God, I walked in there. Long story short,
Karna says, Oh my god, I've never seen a makeup
artist that just worked us like that. We did no
prep work or anything like that. From the lightest porcelain
(05:00):
to the deepest of the dark of the ebony. I
learned as a makeup artist. If I could do the
fairs of the light of them, and I could do
the darkest of the deepest them because I am black,
then I know I'm a badass makeup artist. And so
at the end of that, she says, you're hired. I'm
going to hire you to be a consultant and makeup
artist consultant for me. And after that I became one
(05:21):
of Karina's lead makeup artists and beauty in the bride.
Now she was known across the whole Bay area. But
I needed a name. I needed a foot in the door.
I needed to I needed to actually get my foot in,
get my name. And so long story short, at the
end of that, Karina will be like, Okay, Kim, I
got this, I got this wedding that's coming up over
here at this location. I need to know if you're available.
(05:43):
We would sign our contracts. Everything would be a copoesthetic
that would be very professional. I would go to wherever
the bride was getting married, I had my kid. I
was always ready. Everything was already filled out. I already
knew how many makeup artists I was doing. I knew
the start, I knew the end. Everything was just so
well organized that the start of two gorgeous makeup. That
was the start of two gorgeous rick That was the
(06:04):
start of two gorgeous makeup. You got to be ready.
You have to be ready for an opportunity. And when
an opportunity comes to you and you are not ready,
that was the start of two gorgeous makeup. So from there,
I opened up my spa in nineteen ninety six, became
an esthetician, started doing makeup. When I was already doing makeup,
I was a consultant for beauty and the bride, and
(06:26):
then I began to be a bridal artist myself from
my own clientele. So I had to tell that story.
That's where I started as a struggling makeup artist. So
one after another after another, after another after another after another,
I sharpened my skill. When it came to makeup artistry,
I became known in the Bay Area. I actually began
to create my own relationships with professionals and hotels around
(06:50):
the Bay, and then slowly after then, after about a
couple of years of working with Karina, because actually she
was top nurse, I needed to know her skill. I
needed to model her. I needed the professional edge in
addition to the artistic ability. See it's one thing to
have the artistic ability, but do you have the professional edge?
Do you know what it means to run a business.
Do you know what it means to manage a business?
(07:11):
Do you know what it means to market a business?
And that those were the pieces that I still needed
to be weaved in, and so I worked under her
so that I can learn those pieces. Once those pieces
were in alignment, I was ready to fly and to
be independent on my own. So hence, twenty six years later,
have my own cosmetic line to Gorgeous Cosmetic, my own
(07:34):
skin line to Gorgeous Skincare, and my own bathroom body line.
So I have to say that story is a struggling
makeup artist going in and out of working for other
hotels and department stores led me to become a one
of the key makeup artists for Karina Casper and that
(07:54):
was Beauty in the Bride. So I'm so excited. I
always love to tell that story. So now movie forward
into gorgeous. My business began to grow as a license
as the vision, and so confidence, confidence is amazing. Confidence
is what I needed in order to continue running my business.
So what I want to inspire lady boss business owners,
(08:18):
business owners is that your confidence is everything. Let me
tell you another story. I actually began to be a
platform makeup artist in my field for the Las Vegas
conference show for Face and Body. It was a couple
of other major major shows, and I remember this one story.
(08:42):
We would have these these actually we just had a
Face Somebody show not too long ago, where we would
have these different kinds of conferences and shows where all
the beauty professionals will come from all over the world,
and this is where we would learn our training, advanced
knowledge skill set. So I go to to Face Somebody
show that it just celebrated thirty years in business. I
(09:05):
actually been attending twenty six of those thirty years. And
so this is when I became a top notch makeup
artist in my field, in a beauty industry. And so
I went to one of the shows. It was God
was it. It was the New York Show. So I
walk in. They happened to have the show in San Jose.
(09:27):
I walk in there with San Francisco, so I happened
to walk into the show. I was so excited. I
was fresh. I was just out of aesthetic school. And
I said, you know, I had already been working with Karna,
so I had already got my skill set. I said,
you know, I want to teach in one of these shows,
because you would see all the platform makeup artists, you
would see all the hair salons. They would have their
(09:48):
top not masters that you would learn from. Me. Says,
I want to teach one of those classrooms. I want
to teach one of those classrooms. So I went over
there and I talked to the program director. I never
forget this guy, and we just hit it off. Okay,
we just hit it off. He says, well, show me
what you got. So I had my portfolio there. I
had a couple of pictures of the work that I did.
(10:09):
He said, if you can get your bio to me
within twenty four or forty eight hours, And it was
a bio because at that time, you had to do
a whole print kit. We didn't have like a lot
of internet at the time. He said, if you need
I need to have a print kit. I need to
have some examples of your work, and if you could
send your bio. It was a whole PR kit. It
(10:31):
was a PR press kit and I had to manually
put it together. But I'm gonna need it within forty
eight hours. Now, if you could get that to me
in New York, I will place you in the New
York Show. Now I've already told you how I got
started with my confidence, and I says, okay, See, as
you elevate, we'll lend more opportunities. And when you get
(10:51):
into more opportunities, you need to be available in the
playing field. So I had to elevate. So I elevated
to the next level. I was working with Karina and
I had finished that and I was establishing my business.
But now I need to take it higher. I need
to be recognized in my field, in the beauty industry.
He said, if you can get this PR packet to
me within forty eight hours, I will place you in
(11:14):
the New York Show. I said, oh God, all right,
I'm leaving the show. I'm going home. We talked about confidence,
being prepared for an opportunity, then having an opportunity and
not be prepared. The other one is fear. Now, I
could have succumbed to the fear, and it's like, oh
my god, I got work to do, and I think
I'm just taken a class. I was working my business
at the time. I'm like, how am I going to
(11:35):
how am I going to get how am I going
to get this pr packeted and get it into forty
eight hours? It was it was twenty four forty eight hours.
It was something like that. Anyway, long story short, I
went home, got the package together, got my bio together,
typed it out, printed it out. I did everything that
he told me to do. Oh my god, that X
wasn't available at that time that I needed. It couldn't
(11:56):
come to me, or it couldn't pick up the letter
at the time that I needed to get to New
York at the that I need. And I'm like, no,
I'm I gonna do this. I don't do this, And
it's like here it is. When you are determined to
do something, the gods of the heaven will give you
options on how you can do it. Now. You can
succumb to fear, or you can say I'm going to
(12:17):
rise above it. I'm gonna rise through it, round it,
above it, top, bottom, whatever it is. I'm going through
this and time don't do this. So what I had
to do is, after I prepare the PR packet, I
never forget, I put it in an envelope. I had
to drive it to Hagenburger back then that's where the
main FedEx. That's where the main FEDIX. In order to
(12:39):
get to New York at the time that he needed
me to get this PR packet, I had to drive it.
So I have to drive it. I remember that time.
I was in my car. I was driving off a
Heckenberger road. Oh my god, I said, Lord, I'm not
gonna lit to fear. I'm not going to succumb to
fear because I see myself. I saw myself. I was
manifesting vision before I knew what manifestation was. And so
I'm on the freeway and I'm driving. I get to
(13:01):
the FedEx. It's almost five o'clock. They're about to close.
I'm knocking on the door. I'm like, you gonna let
me in, You gonna let me in, open, Open, Open, open.
I had all this faith. So I get to the door.
She said, lady, you know what, I gotta get this.
You got to send this off because I got to
get to New York by Monday. She did it, she
took the package. I think I paid like six sixty
seventy five dollars to get that package so that he
(13:23):
could get that package by Monday. And I'm like, oh
my god, I did it. Monday comes, he gives me
the call. He says, I got the packet. Kim Boom,
I'm in the show. I'm doing my first professional makeup
artistry show in my field in the beauty industry. And
that's how Too Gorgeous became a platform professional makeup artist.
(13:44):
Oh my god. I was so excited, dude. This is
the first time ever I was deemed as a professional
in my field. He said, Kim, you in the show.
The show was the end of that month. I'm gonna
pitch you into the directory. All right, long story short.
I get to I get to New York. I'm there,
I'm in Marquee, I'm in Manhattan. It's like, oh my god,
that was my first time ever being New York. Oh
(14:05):
my goodness. Not only that, we're gonna send for for
you an assistant and who that assistant? When you get
in a system. Plus you get to do plus you
get to pick three models. I says, I get an assistance.
He paid me for fifty minutes. Plus I got an assistant.
Plus I got three models. And I call my girlfriend.
I said, Bertha, we're going to New York. She was
available at the time. I said, here's the ticket, Bob,
(14:27):
you're gonna go. You're gonna meet me over here at
the hotel. We had so much fun. It was just
it was dumb. It was just dumb, stupid, crazy. But
let me tell you this. I get to New York.
I'm standing in the Marquee at the Manhattan the Cross.
I'm looking I'm opening the door and it's like, oh
my god. I'm like, I'm a fifty seventh floor, a
fifty second floor, forty something floor, whatever the floor was.
(14:49):
But I can open up the window and it's like
I can see Times Square and it's like, oh my god,
I'm looking at this and like, is this Dick Clark.
I'm looking at this. This is where the ball drops
every New Year's Oh my god, my hotel room. I
open up the window and I can open open and
I can actually see where the ball drop in Times Square.
That's where they had put me. I manifest. I was
(15:11):
manifesting the vision even before I got there, even before
I knew what it was. I was manifesting what I wanted.
So I get there. Long story short, the first day,
I get to go and select my models. See, when
you are a professional, they give you models, and those
models get paid and you get paid to choose them.
(15:33):
I never forget. I went to the model call. I
know what a model call is. I've been doing them
several times. I go to the modocall. It's like, oh
my god, I have really I I've arrived to gorgeous
has arrived. I'm on this. They sent me a cab,
they sent me a car. I went to the model call.
They got these models from all over the world. And
(15:55):
you know, I specialize in multicultural bridle makeup, so my
whole thing was makeup from the Bay Area bagup artists,
brown skirts, brown skinned girl like me, and I wanted
to represent brides from around the world. So in type
of the makeup that I was teaching other professionals to
(16:16):
up level their confidence, so you don't forget the brown
skin girl, so you don't forget Latina beauty. So you
don't forget Indian beauty, so you don't forget us that
are non whites, don't forget us. So I mastered multi
cultural makeup and that's how I got into the show.
(16:36):
And that was my slightest edge. So I'm in there,
I'm in the motocoll. I'm walking down the aisle. They say, okay,
Ms Evans, your next. I get up, you go and
what you do? You look at the models. I said, oh, you, you, you, you,
and you. I had four models and I can already
tell by your facial structure how the makeup is going
to look. Long story short, man. Those models were so
(16:59):
excited because they get paid big bucks. If you choose them,
they get paid big bucks. That only that they fly
me out, have the hotel, have the model hall, have
my assistant. So the first day, now I'm teaching, you
don't get that much time to prep. So the time
in prepping, I get to the hotel, I get to
the Javis Convention Center in New York and they said, Kim,
(17:20):
you and Ruby boom, the models go down. I'm doing
part of the prep work before you teach a class.
I got fifty minutes, y'all, I got fifty minutes. I
gotta get my time down. I got fifty minutes, and
I got to be able to prep all these models,
four models plus pack my kid plus go to the
other side to unpack to get ready for the class.
(17:41):
Long story short. I prepped them, we came out, we
walked out. Man, I'm leading the pack. I got an
African American, I got a Latina beauty, I got an Indian,
and I got this one lady from Finland. It was
so beautiful. I have four models to demonstrate, four different
bridal looks. I get to my bridle class and I'm
looking and it's like, oh my god, this can't be
for me. All these people are in here. It's three
(18:01):
hundred people. It's three hundred people in the class. It's
three hundred professionals from all over the world. So long
olders coming to my breakup, to my bridal makeup class.
Oh my god, here we go. Fear. I could let
fear set in, but I decided not to. They already
flew me already in New York, and they had already
decided how much they were going to pay me. I
went and I got to that stage. I did the
(18:24):
first model. I did the second model, I did the
third model, I did a fourth model, and then all
the models walked around the whole room so everybody can
look at them. And people were like, hey, Kim, do
you have a video? Do you have a video that
you can show a step by step on how to
do this? And I said, as a matter of fact,
(18:44):
I do. I do have a video. And as a
matter of fact, we're taking orders, so would you like
to place your order? And they said, well, how much
the video is going to be by that time? See
was VJs. I says, oh, it's sixty dollars. I just
I just created in my mind. I says, so we're
taking thirty dollars the deposit today. If you were like
then people got up. They all paid me thirty dollars.
(19:05):
I said, Bert, you got to collect the money. I says,
because we've got to pack up. It's like, oh my god.
Be prepared for an opportunity, to have an opportunity and
not be prepared, and not be prepared. Decided that you're
not going to give into fear. And then when the
opportunity come, what are you going to do next? You're
going to create? I decided to elevate it's like I
didn't have a video. Then I just says okay, but
then you can't take that money and you can't produce it.
(19:25):
It's like, okay, great God, it's like you're gonna rise
up to the channels when you get back. You're producing
a video and it's gonna be done in thirty days.
Long story short, it was one of the best shows
I've ever did. That only did that. I was the
first one, and in fifteen minutes they paid me twelve
hundred dollars. It was the most that I've ever made
in fifty minutes doing what I love. The fifth point
of the story, do what you love and the money
(19:47):
would follow. Do what you love and the money would follow.
All from becoming or starting as a struggling makeup artist.
So from then and get back to the Bay Area.
Now I'm an Arthur because now I have to produce
this video. I started creating the video, made the video
in thirty days. I found somebody to edit it, we edited,
we produced it, sent it out. Oh my god. And
(20:10):
then that's how I became an author. Went to the IBS,
the IBS, the conference. I had to get the number,
the number that you have, I had to slap the
number on there that the Library of Congress so that
you can get the bar code number. Got the bar
code number, and I did all that. So I say
all that to say, it is amazing when you do
(20:32):
not give in to fear. And so the next year
they called me back and I taught. The next year
they called me back after that, and so they continued
the relationship with me. So when they would have our
professional shows, they called me and I would come and
I would teach my bridal makeup. It was awesome. Not
(20:53):
only did I do New York, I did Orlando, Florida,
I did Chicago, I did Las Vegas and then Saddlesa
and so I just had to share that story that
when you follow what you love and when you follow
your dream, your dream makes room for you and to
act upon that dream. And it all started when I
(21:16):
was struggling to make up artists and then I started
working with Carena casts for so I gave it. I
didn't give into my confidence. I leveled my confidence. I
grew from that confidence always be prepared for an opportunity,
then have an opportunity and not be prepared. And I
continue to develop my skill set and so hence then
(21:39):
I grew my business to gorgeous and then we're here
today twenty six years later. So I had to just
share that. Somebody needed to hear that, and my cosmetic
line has expanded. And what I thought and what I
wanted and what I also wanted share you with this
(22:01):
is that when I did make up, my vision was
I wanted to not only to make a woman feel
amazing and to inspire their self confidence, because when you
make a woman feel beautiful and she looks beautiful from
the inside out, it heightens her self confidence. And when
(22:21):
her self confidence is heightened, how she appears and how
people treat her it's so different. It's so beautiful to
see the before when a water comes into my studio
and then when they leave after we do makeup. It's
something magical when you're putting on a lipstick, something magical,
(22:42):
when you're putting on mess scarra, something magical to a woman,
when you're just like artistic and filling in those brows.
Something magical when you just like you ended with a
nice powder and it's beautiful. It's just too gorgeous, and
so I am so excited. So just to share that
with you. So long story short, We're still in business
(23:04):
today and I'm still offering my Bridle makeup as well
as my esthetics practice. But let's pivot. So in the
last couple of years, my business started to continue to
come back after going through what we've gone through, and
now we're just at our next level. And now I'm
doing business coaching. And I was doing business coaching all along,
(23:27):
but now I'm doing more of the business coaching. I
want to be able to take that skill set. I
want to be able to take those experiences that have
been able to mold me to be a successful business
owner and to shorten the gap in the time so
that I can share those nuggets with other lady Boss
entrepreneurs so they can soar and they can now grow
(23:49):
in their business. So last year I decided, how can
I get my voice into the world. How can I
take my skill set, my experiences and I can also
share those other year and says with others like minded.
And I came up with my podcast show, and so
I began to call some of my colleagues. I began
to call some of other estheticians, other people that was
(24:12):
in the beauty field that was really sharpened their game
when it comes to marketing mastery, business mastery, SEO mastery
and all the components that you need to really grow
as an individual and to also to shape your business practice.
And my gud my podcast every single month of guests
has been amazing from the very first one, who was
(24:35):
Kelly Armstrong. She was my very first guest, and I
remember I used to teach. I was actually a guest
artist for not a guest art. Yeah, I was a
guest artist and also an educator for Kelly. And she
is San Francisco City College. I think she's retiring now
this year, but I will come every year and I
would teach to her students or I would share some
(24:55):
nuggets and gems to her students. And then when I
started my podcast, oh, I said, Kelly, you need to
start your podcast show, but you're going to be my
guest on my show. And so, long story short, the
woman has been trailblazing. She's doing magnificent on her podcast show.
So I had another guest, I had another guest and
(25:15):
another guest, And if you haven't had an opportunity to
listen to my podcast show, please go back. I had
my first Hollywood actress on my show. I had my
first international podcast from Ghana on my show, and now
I have my second international guest from Australia on my
show and God is elevating. So let me leave you
(25:38):
with this because I didn't want to make this too long.
From my very struggle starting as a makeup artist twenty
six years ago, I had a vision of what I
wanted to do. I had a talent and I loved
and I had passion of what I wanted making every
woman feel absolutely two gorgeous through the art of makeup.
(25:59):
And I didn't let it waiver. I didn't let it go,
I didn't let it die. I stayed fast to that vision.
I manifest a vision of what I wanted and it
became an action when I stepped foot in New York.
Manifestation is wonderful. You can envision anything you want. If
you don't like your life, change the story. If you
(26:22):
don't like what you're doing, then change it. If you
don't like where you are, make a decision and take
massive action. I made it up my mind to take
massive action, and twenty six years later, my business is
still striving. I am a successful online business coach and
(26:42):
I have a podcast show and walk to the fiftieth show.
That is my story and I'm sticking to it. Thank
you very much for watching. Just wanted to share just
a glimpse a little bit. Maybe you didn't know makeup artistry.
I will always do that and I love it. So
(27:04):
how can you get in contact with me? There's three
ways how we can work together. I have a complimentary
game plan strategy call, and I'm going to weave that
in the show notes. Pick up the phone and let's
book a strategy call. I would love to talk with you.
That's comformenting. The second way that you can work with
me is my online group coaching program which is called
(27:25):
The Unstoppable from Business to Profits, and that is a
twelve month program that I in you we work together,
and it also has coaching. It's live coaching with me
in a group setting every other Monday for one year.
The third way you can work with me is one
(27:46):
