Immediati i soccorsi dei compagni, che però riescono ad individuare ed estrarre dalla neve solo 8 di loro - Poi, l'arrivo sul posto di una squadra di soccorso , con carabinieri, finanzieri, vigili del fuoco, insieme ad alcuni valligiani, tutti impegnati fino all'estremo nell'affannosa opera di recupero anche con l'ausilio di cani da valanga. Recupero, purtroppo, di 7 alpini ormai senza vita.
Ha trovato la forza di raccontarci come sono andate le cose, uno dei superstiti, Nereo Viviani. Estratto parecchi minuti dopo la tragedia, è rimasto cosciente sotto la neve, almeno fino all'arrivo dei soccorsi.
I suoi ricordi oggi, sono ancora nitidi e precisi, anche se sono trascorsi più di 50 anni dalla sciagura.
