Dopo la fine della seconda guerra, a partire dal 1960 il passo Gavia inizia ad assumere popolarità, perché rappresenta una delle salite storiche del noto Giro D'Italia, ma qualche anno prima, questi luoghi già terribilmente provati dai trascorsi eventi bellici, sono stati teatro di una sciagura che non va dimenticata - un dramma che tutta Italia ha seguito ascoltando la radio e leggendo i giornali.
Martedì il 20 luglio 1954 , un plotone del battaglione “Bolzano” del 6° Reggimento Alpini della brigata “Tridentina”, a bordo di un camion militare camion Fiat 639 preceduto da una campagnola
saliva da Santa Caterina Valfurva verso il Passo Gavia, per poi scendere a Ponte di Legno.
Arrivato alle cosiddette Rocce Nere, pur procedendo lentamente, a causa del cedimento della carreggiata, esce di strada e salta nel vuoto. Diciassette alpini restano uccisi subito, il diciottesimo successivamente per le gravi ferite riportate.
L'argomento di questa puntata, è una delle pagine più tristi degli alpini in tempo di pace.
