Una delle tragedie di mare più importanti, in termini di perdite umane, fu l'affondamento del Galilea, piroscafo adibito a trasporto truppe che, il 28 marzo, 1942 stava trasportando 1355 persone, tra le quali, centinaia di alpini del battaglione Gemona della brigata Julia.
