We started out as a diagnosis. “Your blood pressure’s sky high,” our founder Ira’s doctor told him. “Get it down in 3 weeks, or it’s surgery.” So Ira went on medication, changed his diet, and began exercising. But he also learned about foods that work like natural blood pressure medicines. It turns out there’s some powerful biochemistry going on in the produce section of your grocery store. With help from life-long friend and nutritionist, Susan Schachter, he blended a juice. Drank it. Two weeks later, his BP was 30 points lower. “How’d you do this?” his doctor asked. Find out how Ira lowered his BP when he and Susan Schachter share Blood Pressure secrets with Mark Alyn.

This is Late Night Health. Thisis the radio show that cares about the
most important part of your life, your health. During the next hour,
the Insane, Daryl, Wayne andI are going to take a look at
some things that touch each and everyone of us. During the second part
of the show, we're going totalk about some new updates on prostate health

(00:30):
and uterine health. And that'll bewith Sue McKinney. She's been on the
show a number of times. We'regoing to get an update on some research
that she's doing. And then we'regonna go to I think two different places,
Susan Schacter, who is let's sayshe has a master's degree, so

(00:52):
she's really smart guys, registered dietitianand nutritionists. And then we're also going
to go and speak with Ira andtell Us, who is the founder of
one twenty Life. This is whatI had for breakfast this morning, everybody
us. Yeah, and it tastespretty good. And uh and it actually

(01:17):
tastes really good. I was Igrimaced a little bit. We're going to
talk about blood pressure, the silentkiller right now. Um, I'm going
to start with you. You wentinto your doctor and he said, Ira,
you got a choice live or die, tell us about that. Yeah,

(01:38):
you know, so um I had. You know, every time you
go to any kind of doctor, they takes your blood pressure, and mine
had always been somewhat normal. AndI remember I wasn't feeling great once of
the eye doctor. They took myblood pressure and was high, and it'd
never been that high. I justthought it was wrong. And then I
think a couple of weeks weeks letter, I'm in walking room and I'm you

(02:00):
know, I'm not feeling great. Some hard complications lifehead in this and I'm
waiting for a prescription. I said, hey, can you take my blood
pressure? I'm sure enough? Itwas even higher, and I'm like,
oh boy, we have a problem. I called a friend of mine who's
actually my doctor, and went tothe high you know, to see him,
and he said, you have reallyhigh blood pressure and because of another

(02:22):
health issue, you have three weeksto get it down or we're going to
do open heart surgery. Just likethat, I said, well, what's
high blood pressure? Now everybody knowswhat can happen. I want to know
what it is and like how youfix it? And they gave me some
kind of sheet and gave me somemedicine, and there was sort of like,

(02:44):
go figure it out. So Iwent home obsessively, compulsively started saying,
well, what should I eat? What should I drink? Cut your
salt was the first thing. Andthe truth be told is I didn't mind
having the operation. I didn't knowhow to tell my daughter because my first

(03:05):
wife had passed away, so Icouldn't figure out a way how was I
going to tell my daughter I wasgoing into the hospital. So I had
to figure out a way to getmy blood pressure down. Because I did,
that would have been more difficult thandoing the operation. Of course,
how old is your daughter? Well, now she's twenty six. At the
time, I think she was probablyin her early teens. But I just

(03:27):
couldn't fau how to do this,so I sort of, you know,
the first thing you read cut outall your salt. So what I did
was literally going on a salt freediet. I'm taking the medication and I'm
reading It's funny because the first twothings that popped up were like Brussels sprouts
and beets, the only two foodsof my life that I hate, and
they're like, if you have highblood pressure, these are two foods you

(03:47):
should start with. That's true. It's the one you'll have to come over.
You'll have to come over to myhouse because I hated Brussels sprouts the
way my mom made them. Theywere gray, right, so I roached
them and they're they're very good.So then, um my blood presure went

(04:11):
down. But I'm a little compulsiveobsessive, so I'm reading about all of
these things. I'm still on thecomputer reading about what SHA eat, what
did I drink? And every timeI'm on the computer, the same six
to eight things popped up. Ifyou drink beat Us, that lowers your
blood pressure, and I'm reading thestudies. If you drink pomegratsue it lowers

(04:32):
your blood pressure. I'm reading thestudies. If you drink high discus tea,
it lowers your blood pressure. Soone day I'm like, wow,
if they all lower your blood pressure, you know, a little cumtively.
I wonder if they would lower ita lot. And I'm like, well,

(04:53):
I'll just go buy it, figuringsomebody nobody has any original ideas.
And I there was nothing. Notonly was there not that drink, there
was no drink, There was nothere was nothing out there that said if
you have high blood pressure and youdrink pomegranate juice, and everybody's gonna laugh
at me because everybody knows that Ido music. They're like, yeah,

(05:15):
what do you know, Dota?So I said, well, you know
what I might not know, butone of my closest friends for many,
many years, she's got a master'sin nutrition. She'll know that. I
call Susan, who said that probablycould work. That she did some investigating,
said okay, here's what we shouldadd. As you know, she

(05:35):
tinkered with the formula and next thingyou know, we're giving it to people
and then blood pressure is dropping, and I'm like, we gotta take this
to market. I mean, Iknow nothing about it, but I'll learn.
And here we are, like fiveyears and here we are and you
you created UM one twenty life.Susan, Um, you're in in New

(05:55):
Jersey and I think, Iras, are you in Chicago? Yeah, we're
both from Brooklyn. I'm in Chicago, she's in New Jersey. We grew
up around the corner from each other, got it. Maybe that was around
the corner from where my father wasover in UM. I can't even remember
the neighborhood, but I saw hisapartment and apparently it hasn't been cleaned since

(06:17):
he left in nineteen thirty. Bloodpressure itself, Susan, is very serious.
Before what we were waiting to record, you mentioned it's a silent killer.
Yeah, most people don't even knowthey had it or habit right,

(06:40):
Yes, there's a very large percentageof the populate. First of all,
over a hundred million Americans habit,so that's a third of the population.
It's like between a third and ahalf in of the population habit. So
it's and and such a large percentage, well, such a significant percentage don't

(07:00):
even know they have it because therearen't necessarily symptoms, right, So of
course it has a huge impact onone's health, a huge impact. One
of the things that we talk abouta lot are functional medicine or alternative approaches,
because I think that's better than takingsomething from big pharma. I'd rather

(07:25):
make Ira rich than and and buyone twenty life because there's nothing in here
that's going to hurt me. Youknow, if I could say Mark,
I have to. I always callit nature's pharmacy, because every one of
the ingredients in our drink has hasan effect that is the equivalent of a

(07:47):
blood pressure mad that's prescribed and thereare good side effects from them. There
are other benefits to taking it aswell, there aren't. I mean,
you told me it relaxes you.Well, yes, it does in that,
you know, because when you gettense, your blood vessels constrict right

(08:09):
right, and it helps. Thisis some of the things in it are
vasodilators and it helps helps you relax. So Ira, what I was saying
to him before is I showed himwhen I'm drinking because I was a little
nervous about this. I'm drinking abig glass of Seltzer with a bottle of
one twenty life in it, andI said, I don't have high blood
pressure, but it helps me help. Yeah, I have to tell you

(08:31):
both. I have slightly high bloodpressure and my cardiologist is threatened that if
I don't lower it, my heartwill explode. And I don't want my
kids to have to go to thehospital or a funeral home, at least
not right now. We're going totake some time out and we'll come back

(08:52):
and talk more about this. Oneof the interesting things about one twenty life.

Insane Darryl Wayne join us at LateNighthelp dot com. I apologize in advance
about any noise you might hear outsideour my studio. It's at my house,
not at Darryl's house. So Itake the blame. Our guests or

(13:58):
Susan Schacter and ira A Telus. They are the co founders of one twenty
life, and we're talking about bloodpressure. One twenty. Is that the
number we want? Susan one overeighty or less well us or less less

(14:20):
got it? Which is the one? Which number is more significant? The
top number the bottom number. Yousee, they're both significant. They really
are both significant. But the thingabout the bottom number is that it's more
reflective of a slightly longer period oftime, and the top number is more
reflective situationally in the moment and um, you know, one is when your

(14:43):
heart is is relaxing and not pumping, and the other the top number is
when it's pumping. So when yougo to the doctor or when you talk
to a spouse, um, yourblood pressure autom practically goes up, especially

(15:03):
with the spouse. Yeah, it'scalled white white you know what. I
go to the doctor all time andwe sort a bicker back and forth because
I'm trying to get him to promotemy drink. But I have like white
coat syndrome. So then whole measuremy blood pressure, it will be high.
And I'm like, I know it'snot high because I've mentioned it this
four day that it was like oneO six over sixty eight. So finally

(15:24):
said, okay, send me twentyreadings from your blood pressure or in your
house to convince me. You knowyour book, which is what I did?
How many drinks about? You know? This is what? Is it?
Eight ounces? Yeah? This iseight ounces? How many should I
drink a day? One one onein the morning at night? Does it

(15:46):
matter? You should do it regularly. It's probably a good idea to do
in the morning, though it's betterto do it's honestly, it's better to
not one of the things in themorning. Some people use mouthwashed, and
using mouthwash could counteract the effects tosome extent because you need some of the
bacteria that would be killed by themouthwash. You need some of that to

(16:07):
help convert some of the natural chemicalsin it to what we need it to
be. It's it's not overly sweet, high end calories. Um and there
there doesn't appear to be Excuse me, I'm looking at the ingredients again.
There we go. When you guysget old, you'll have to use a

(16:30):
magnifying glass too. Your eye wearglasses too. The magnesium in here is
very good because magnesium does help relaxpeople, a smooth muscle relaxer. Yeah,
and it's also a calcium channel blocker, which is one of the meds
they used for high blood pressure.Yeah, that's and that's the reason you

(16:52):
can't drink more than one a daybecause thanks to Susan, we put in
the recommended daily amount of magnesium andtoo much bragdesium. Because I get emails
about this whole time. I'm like, no, you really should about drink
too a day because too much bracdesiumis not good for you. Indicium,
you could end up having loose stools, you know, right, because your

(17:14):
intestines are smooth muscle and it's andand in sleep preparations supplements there's a lot
of subu magnesium and why you mightbe asleep you might wake up surprise with
uh there it goes. Can youguys hear that beautiful power washing my wall?

(17:41):
Um? When you develop who howdid you develop this? And I
know that you have a cardiologist.Doctor Lowell Steen is your director. He's
a director of cardiology and he's anadvisor to you guys, Susan, did
you put the formula together? Irawas the one who got most of it

(18:03):
together and then got in touch withme, and then he and I went,
I added something, and then wewent back and forth to try and
get it to taste the best itcan taste and while being the most effective
it can be. And the wayI basically put it together because as my
wife would tell you, I've neverbeen in a kitchen, so the fact
that I was like mixing things inher kitchen really caused anxiety to her health.

(18:30):
But what I would do is that'strue, and she still talks about
it, you know. But whathappened was I read this is a good
example. I read, okay, drinking as little as two ounces of pomegranates
used today, Well, there werea blood pressure. So I'm like,
okay, and it's going to bean eight ounced drink and two of the
ounces will be Pomegrtjudice and I wentfrom there. I was just based it

(18:51):
on the studies. I knew itcouldn't be all liquid, so I'm like,
well, I'll use powers and that'sand then Susan looked at it,
added took a that's how we cameup with Um, I just do every
single one of the ingredients. Everyone of them have clinical studies showing that
they lower blood pressure. Um.Both of you grew up in in Brooklyn,

(19:14):
right, yes, and so you'reyou either were eating Italian food at
home or Jewish food both high.I'm so what was that ira or pizza?
Pizza? And yeah, right, and pizza's universal. Um? Right,

(19:37):
So how do you guys give upthat kind of food? Um?
Because we live to eat. Imean, you can change your diet so
much, but every now and thenI need a you know, a pistrami
sandwich and a kosher pickle or uh, some kind of Italian of food both

(20:00):
high and sodium. Sometimes it's okay. Sometimes, yes, eating is a
pleasure. Eating is a pleasure. And if we don't let ourselves have some
of the things that we love, then if we do have someone time,
we feel like, oh, I'mgoing to be really careful starting to Marlin,

(20:22):
and so we eat everything in thesight that night that we love.
Right, and we keep going throughthat cycle over and over and over again.
It's important to let yourself have thingsyou love in inappropriate portion sizes,
in a certain level of frequency. So you know, I was at I
like to tell the story. Iwas once at a barbecue for some people

(20:44):
in our community going away, andeveryone knows I'm a nutritionist and I was
having a hot dog and they're like, you're eating a hot dog. It's
like, yes, I'm human,I'm eating a hot dog. I have
a couple of hot dogs a year. It's not a big deal, you
know. So it's importantly yourself enjoyfood. It's just on a daily basis.
It's important to also monitor the thingsthat can affect your health. And

(21:08):
I say, I've learned from Susanstarting to throw, but I say prepare.
So if you know you're going toa birthday party at night, then
be really conscious of what you're doingduring the day. And I've learned down
from Susan. So it's and thenthe other thing I said all the time
that people because when they call aboutthe I'm like, look, you don't

(21:30):
want for fifty some odd years, you probably ate and drank everything you wanted
to. But if you want tolive healthier next twenty or thirty years,
you're gonna have to make some seriouscompromises. And there's still plenty of good
things that you can eat that arehealthy for you. So many. But
you also combine this with exercise, right, So I say that, I

(21:52):
mean I exercise accessively. I thinkSusan does two. But we don't say
people look at it as a hack. On some level. We tell people,
look, it'd be good if youwalk through your exercise. But that's
not a mantra. You know. There's a bunch of stuff we could tell
people, but the basic thing iswe know that the strength dilates one of
the things that opens up above vesselsand things like that. And I find

(22:17):
when you tell people too many things, it backfires, like when you try
to do fifteen things to get yourhealth in order. Like I was talking
to somebody yesterday and I'm thinking, this is never gonna work. I do
one and really get good at onething. So maybe the one thing is
you're gonna walk around the block tentimes, you know, five times a
day, and then you'll start youwant twenty life, and then in a
period of time you build if youtry to do I have to interrupt because

(22:41):
we're at a time and just fromlooking at you, guys, it looks
like Susan, you spend an hourand a half a day in the gym.
I write, you and I haveto walk more together. I think
you're you're about ten minutes of walkinga day, So just kidding. Listen.
The name of the product is onetwenty Life. Go to their website.

(23:03):
We'll have that up on our ourwebsite at late Night Health. It'll
tell you the story of Ira.It's fascinating and he's giving it away.
I mean you can. You canbuy it pre made, or you can
make it yourself. Will you guyscoming to make it with me? Um?
Yeah? Well yeah. I alsojust wanted to mention we have an

(23:26):
ebook that Ira and I did that'sfree as a download from our website that
talks about blood pressure. It iscalled the easy to read, all in
one place, no Wagging Fingers Guideto High Blood Pressure, and it's free
from our website. Got it listen, look forward to to having you back.

(23:48):
Hold on a second. I'm MarkAllen along with the Insane Daryl Wayne.
Sue McKenny is up next. We'regoing to talk about prostate health and
uterine fibroid health as ID Health continued
