Speaker 1 (00:02):
You're listening to lee KOM presents Heroes in Training. The
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, also known as lee KOM,
has been providing training to heroes all across the globe
since nineteen ninety three. This podcast gives you an insider
look at the stories of triumph and hope from both

(00:22):
former students and faculty, helping you decide if LEEKOM is
the right choice for your higher education. Let's start the show.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Hi, I'm Rich Logden. I am the Dean of the
School of Pharmacy.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
What year did you start at LEEKOM.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
I started at LEECOM in June of two thousand and eight.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I started as a faculty member.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
I practiced in geriatrics and then from there went on
to some administrative positions, Director of Curriculum, Associated Dean of
the Accelerated Pathway, and then became dean in in July
of twenty twenty.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
What led you to a career in healthcare?

Speaker 4 (01:05):
So, you know, as many of our students say, as
they're coming in, my interest in math and science really
drew me to health care. Knew I wanted to be
in some type of service industry, so education I was
very drawn to education, but healthcare had lots of flexibility,
So that's what really drew me to healthcare and in pharmacy.

(01:28):
I you know, I had an interest in math and
also some interest in chemistry, and wanting a profession that
wasn't as direct patient care was more appealing to me. So,
you know, we do do much more with assessing patients
and having more direct patient care now as a pharmacist,

(01:50):
but not as much as you would see if you
were a physician, you know, or a nurse or physical therapist.
So it was a perfect fit for me.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
What led you to lead compspecific?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
So I was in geriatric pharmacy. I was traveling to various.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Nursing homes doing their medication regimen review and visited Mill
Creek Manor, which was part of Mill Creek Community Hospital
and then also part of Lee KOM. This was in
two thousand and seven two thousand and eight, and was
approached by the residency director at that time to precept pharmacy.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Residents in geriatrics. So I started doing that.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Loved being a preceptor for the residents, but learned more
about Lee COOM and was intrigued by an open faculty
position in the pharmacy practice area, so applied for the position.
I had a strong passion at that time of teaching
geriatrics to pharmacy students, So that's what brought me specifically
to lee Kom.

Speaker 5 (02:53):

Speaker 3 (03:48):
What is an accomplishment you are most proud of?

Speaker 4 (03:51):
So you know I don't know that I've been here
a long time. I've been here almost sixteen years, and
I don't know that I can say which accomplishment I'm
most proud of. But I'd have to say watching the
students come in every year and just welcoming them into
Lee Calm, and then you know, watching them graduate and
go on to their successes. Just any part that I

(04:14):
have in their success gives me such great satisfaction. So,
you know, I, alongside with all of my colleagues in
the School of Pharmacy, I feel like that's our greatest accomplishment,
producing pharmacists that are going to serve our patients in
the future. I can't say more than that.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
What is one of the most memorable moments in your career?

Speaker 4 (04:35):
So my most memorable moment, I guess it would have
been you know, any any time someone comes back to
me and says, you know, doctor, well, I'll give you
a specific example from last year, because this happens a lot,
but it sticks out in my mind.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
As a student was walking across.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
The stage and I congratulated them on their graduation, they
just kind of went up to my ear and said,
you know, so you helped me get this particular rotation
my final year and it made all the difference in
the world, and you know, it really kind of affected
where I'm going to go now with my career.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
So the things like that where they can say to me,
you know.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
You specifically helped me in this particular area is one
that's most significant.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
What advice do you have for women who adjust tarn
a career in healthcare?

Speaker 4 (05:24):
So you know, if the you know, Rachel Logden of
twenty twenty four would have talked to the Rachel Logden
of eighty six that just had graduated from pharmacy school,
I would have never believed that that person would now
be the dean of a pharmacy school. And So what
I tell all of my students, and what I would
tell anyone starting off in healthcare and especially women, is

(05:47):
just never set limits on yourself and never never shield
yourself or create any barriers to any opportunities. I when
I started first in hospital farm see, just a few
years after I graduated from pharmacy school, the manager at
that time saw something in me and encouraged me to

(06:09):
apply for a supervisory position, and that was my first
supervisory position that led me onto you know, my administrative
positions in the future. At that time, I was newly married,
you know, I was thinking about starting a family, and
I enjoyed what I was doing, but I didn't necessarily
see me pursuing a management role at that time, but

(06:32):
I didn't shut myself off to the possibility. So that
led me to become the director of pharmacy at that
particular hospital, and then you know, transformed into what became,
you know, the rest of my career.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
But it was just that.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Beginning of just being open to what someone else saw.
So reach for the goals that you have and just
be open to every opportunity that's presented to you.
