Speaker 1 (00:02):
You're listening to lee KOM presents Heroes in Training. The
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, also known as lee KOM,
has been providing training to heroes all across the globe
since nineteen ninety three. This podcast gives you an insider
look at the stories of triumph and hope from both
(00:22):
former students and faculty, helping you decide if LEECOM is
the right choice for your higher education. Let's start the show.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Hi, everyone, Welcome back to another episode of Leecom's Heroes
and Training podcast. I'm your host, Kathleen Spinazola, and today
I'm with five K people. So this is Lauren za Manic.
This is Mark Badaraco. Lauren, tell us your title here
at LEECOM and what you do and what you have
to do with the five K.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah. So I'm Lauren Zamanic. I'm the operations manager at
the Leecom Lallness Center. I've been with lee KOM for
almost four years now running the wellness center over there,
so all things programming, safety, making sure the students are
are getting their workouts in and are exercising safely. I
love what I do. I have an exercise background, so
(01:16):
graduate of Gannon University, born and raised in Eerie. But yeah,
love programming for the students and love being a part
of what they do.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Fantastic, mister Botaraca.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yes, so I'm I'm the executive director of Enrollment Services
and Information Systems here at Leecom. Thank you for about
five six years now, and I just I absolutely love
it is. It's always a challenge. It's a very fast
paced atmosphere. I love that about this whole this whole
group sold institution. And for me, I have a personal
(01:54):
attachment to the lee Com five K because I'm an
avid runner.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
And that's an understatement which we find out very shortly.
So I have these guys here today because the Leecom
five K is coming up. It's August ninth, it's a Saturday,
and it's the twelfth year that we've had the Leecom
and so as always right, check me, you know, correct
me if I'm wrong. You can run the five k
(02:20):
or you can walk the one mile.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Wellness, you could also walk the five k if you
could them.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
So you can walk or run either the five k
or the one miles.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
That's right, right, yep?
Speaker 2 (02:31):
I love that. What if I wanted to like skip
or gallop or something like that.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
It's just really nice.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Because here's what I love about the five K, the
Leeko five K, Like besides that, it's like every other
five K, you know, the energy.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Is always very high. It's very upbeat. I mean, I
know we're a very sort of.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
High energy institution, like you said, all the way around anyway,
But it's right after the new semester starts, so all
the new students are around everybody. He's just sort of
getting to know each other. I just feel like it's good.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Vibes yes around, Yes, and it's very we have a
great showing. We have many many students, we have some
a lot of public coming of the vendors participating. So
it's a really big collaborative experience.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Tell us what you think. What I love also too
is it's obviously not you know, just limited to Leecom's
staff and students. It's for the entire community, right, So
tell us how the world can get to it if
they want to register for it.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, So you can visit lecomfive k dot com. We'll
put the QR code also on the screen so that
you can easily scan and it'll take you right to
the website. So the registration fee is twenty five dollars
and that includes a T shirt and then all of
the proceeds will benefit the Leecom Student Scholarship Fund. So
we're raising awareness and funds for our future healthcare.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Let's talk about the Student Scholarship Fund for a moment,
because we host a lot of fundraisers right throughout the year.
We've at least come believe very strongly obviously in our
Student Scholarship Fund. It changes the lives of so many
of our students who are then going out into the
community to change lives.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
And they're the best I think.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I find our students super inspiring. They're so compassionate and
there's completely dedicated to healthcare. And then to see them
all out either walking or running.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
It's a great day. Yes.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Tell us Mark, now a bit about your background as
a runner and how you've gotten swirled into the five
K universe.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
So I started out with five ks, and you know,
in the beginning I kind of dabbled. I had a
sister in law she was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease,
and you know she didn't let that stop or she's
still raised a family, a whole family after that. She's
very young when she was diagnosed, like I said, and
(04:58):
she continued to stay active in the community and active
and trying to you know, assist others with the research
and development of treatments for Parkinson's disease. So she uh
started a organization named Running for Parkinson's. They have since
they're no longer uh, you know, working in the community
(05:19):
at this point. But that's what triggered my you know
fire for I guess both the Lee coom are sorry
about the Lee comb, but the five k environment, the
race environment, the competitiveness, and also the aspect of giving
back to the community with every every every time you
get you go to one of these races, you're giving back. Yeah,
(05:40):
it's you know, it's of course, it's fun, you get
the time yourself, that's all those perks, but you are
every single time you participate, you are giving.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
To a cause.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
And that's one of the main things I love about it, seriously,
you know, fast forward, you know. Yeah, So I was
working on that for a while, kind of just hobbyist
here and there, showing up to a five k, running
it to the best of my ability, thinking that I'm
(06:12):
gonna get better someday. Never really did. And then I
was sitting on a couch. I can't remember exactly what
data was, but I was sitting on a couch and
it was one of the Monday of the Boston Marathon,
and I had to be I was off that day
for some reason. And I seen the news come through
(06:32):
someone bombed the actual starting mind and I was, like
like a million other people that day, I was right there,
glued to the TV, and I'm like, these guys, their
whole goal is to scare us away from from being out,
from being free, from getting together as a community, and
(06:54):
I'm not going to participate in any of that. And
I said, I'm going to find a way that I'm
going to run to Boston Marathon one day. I had
no idea what that meant, no idea. It meant about
ten years of training, and you know, there was years
that I was really on and years that I was
(07:16):
a little bit off. Sure, but it took a lot,
and it took a whole community to help me become
me as a runner, realized my potential. You know, we
have running shops, we have athletic you know, organizations around here,
and those people helped get me to where I was
(07:37):
that I was finally able to qualify for the Boston.
It took a few tries of running marathons. It turns
out you had to get a certain time and that
was super challenging. And finally qualified the second time I
ran the Peninsula, the Presco Marathon, and I'm super excited.
(07:57):
I qualified on the anniversary or the leading up to
at the Tent anniversary, and I was able to actually
run the Boston Marathon on a Teent dantaivers system exactly
ten years right, right, amazing, amazing.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
As a successful healthcare business professional, earning a doctorate degree
may seem out of reach. Think again. Leecomm's Doctor of
Healthcare Administration degree program makes it possible through their School
of Health Services Administration. This flexible and affordable, six semester
terminal degree centers around next generation healthcare systems, including harnessing
(08:35):
artificial intelligence, virtual medicine, and applying advanced data analytics to
enhance complex problem solving and research abilities. Courses are delivered
through a dynamic online learning platform available twenty four to seven.
Email Shsa at lee Comm dot edu to begin your
journey of discovery and make becoming a doctor part of
(08:56):
your future. Again, that's shsa at Lee comm dot Eed,
you classes are now forming at leecom. We know wellness
and we are teaching the business of healthcare. This message
is brought to you by Leacom, a nonprofit organization.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
And so you've run many other marathons since I've done
a few since then? Yes, how many have you done?
Just in this past year? I did an ultra marathon
this year, so I guess that marathon that's just anything
further than a marathon. And so I think I did
(09:35):
twenty seven or twenty eight. But it was an ultra marathon.
Place we've done, we've done this past year. I guess
it did another one. It was not a sanctioned event.
But me and two other friends ran from the Ohio
state line to the New York state line in February
(09:57):
and we picked we we were looking for the best
day with the best weather, and it didn't get snowed
on the absolute worst day. It turns out sand sand
from the beach can actually travel quite far to land
in your mouth.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
To you, but you decide to run from Ohio to
New York state through Pennsylvania.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
So we think we think we're gonna make that a yes,
we also would like to do it in the high heat.
You really get the best of both girls. Be careful
with that heat.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
I know, for myself, dragging myself through the five K
I about halfway through, because first of all, let me
just say, I never prepare correctly, but I try to
do it and do my part and drag myself through
the five and always about halfway through, the sun comes
out and I start questioning why I put myself through this?
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Why why am I here? Why am I here at home?
Speaker 2 (11:02):
It becomes like it's just like like, yes, you start
questioning yourself.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
We all go through it.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
But yeah, so the heat makes me.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
A little So it's very important. Yeah, it's very important
to start start small, start getting accliate, acclimated to the
to the warmth in the spring, you know, hopefully, but
just start small. Twenty minutes outside walking a day it
would be a good good way to start. You can
increase that by a few minutes each week, and then
(11:34):
maybe after a month you can start peppering in. You know,
two minutes are running and then walking. But the most
important part, obviously is stay hydrated during all those outdoor activities.
Pay attention to your body. Your body will tell you
when it has had enough. It will tell you when
it is to the point where the thurst is too much.
(11:58):
I've we've actually uncovered I don't know if it's scientific
in any way, but I've actually I've actually you can
tell me. So we found that a few of me
and a few of the running the guys I run
with burn durance runners. We try to really stay in
tune to how we feel. Every few minutes, we do
(12:18):
a check, yeah, this is one to ten, how do
I feel pain scale whatever that case may be, And
we find that as we start becoming dehydrated, we'll feel
it in our joints. Oh yes, you start feeling it
in your knees. You start feeling in your ankles, and
you're like, man, am I getting hurt or what's going on?
But you start having at that check every few minutes,
(12:41):
you know, top down, what's wrong? What's going on? Yeah? Yes,
And if you build that in early, you'll always have
for sure. That's amazing advice. Yeah, it took me a
long time to learn that. Yeah, I'm just.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Like, oh, you know, I might be like arthritis, but
maybe I'm doing hydrated, maybe both.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
You don't have to be running.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
You don't have to be running to realize that you
could just be going through normal day. Yeah, I'm feeling
a little bit drained and need some Linda drink.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
It's usually dehydration. Lauren, tell us a little bit about
for those who don't know. So the full name is
the Lee Calm Medical Fitness and Wellness Center that you manage.
Correct tell us how if for anyone who doesn't know
about it, what our students benefit from a little bit
(13:33):
about the facilities in getting to have access to the center.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Yeah, so all of our students do receive access to
the facility. So we are an eighty two thousand square
foot fitness facility, full strength and cardio equipment lineup. We
have an indoor track that goes around the second floor,
basketball pickleball, racquetball, volleyball courts. We offer open play throughout
the week for the students to come in and play,
(13:56):
no reservation required, They just kind of come in and play.
We offer complimentary fitness assessments for all of our students.
What I really like to highlight too is our fitness
staff is fully minimum of a four year degree in
exercise science, so they're knowledgeable and experts in this field.
They know what they're doing. They can program on the
(14:17):
spot for just about any condition, anything for the healthy
population to special conditions. We can accommodate for everybody. So
that's a really big highlight for our facilities is being
able to provide that service.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
So the five case starts and ends at the Wellness Center, right,
all of the students are there. Of course, there's music
playing and other vendors. Is SGA is the Student Government Association.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Yeah, absolutely, so that's something we'll want to highlight too.
So the first year students will be attending our event,
and then afterwards they will be encouraged to come into
the Wellness Center and we'll be hosting the student club there.
So what they can do is walk around on the
fitness floor. All of the SGA clubs will be available.
They can talk with the SGA reps sign different clubs yep,
(15:11):
so that'll be available. The students will also get lunch
afterwards too.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Nice. It is such a great day. When I say
I love this day, I mean I love this day
for the students and for all of us. Yes, tell us,
I know there's another feature to the five k. Now
when you register to this year, that's new, right, that
has to do with registering a team.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Yes, so this year we added it's new so you
can register here as a team online minimum of five people,
so it'll be two hundred dollars for the team, and
then we'll recognize you at the start and finish line.
We'll have a little sign for you up there with
your team name on it, and then you also get
a T shirt. So that's a new feature to kind
of bring in groups, whether you're an organization or maybe
(15:51):
you have like a small run club that you want
to kind of run with your friends. Doesn't have to
be anything super organized, but something we want to highlight
and highlight our leekom students and staff that go above
and beyond right.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Right, represent your company, come out and represent your run club. Definitely.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
I know that's a fun little pro yeah, especially if
you have a sign that would be hysterical, you know, yes, yeah,
you can see the fun the potential for a lot
of fun in that moment. Yes, all right, So August ninth,
when do people need to register.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Buy Warren So we would recommend that you preregister so
we try to have all those completed prior to race day.
We will do in person registrations. We will kind of
lead it our registration website at that time to sign
up online.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
And everybody gets a T shirt.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Right, everyone will get a T shirt that we have
plenty of T shirts to go around, but we do
want to hopefully have you registered the day before. So
August eighth, Okay, terrific.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
What else do we need to know? Oh, give us
the website one more time for the people.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Lee comfive k dot com.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Write or scan the QR code that's on your screen.
You can instantly register.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
Yes, I want to highlight too. So this is something
that we started during the pandemic when we kind of
had to put a halt on races and being around
our people that we love. So what we do and
we continue to do, is host a virtual option. So
if you have family and friends that are not in
the area area, you know, people that are interested in
(17:23):
running or contributing to the event in some way, shape
or form, they can register virtually same cost. We'll ship
the T shirt to you at the end of the race.
It'll arrive sometime in October, and you can complete the
five care of the one while by yourself, so pick
a location of your choosing and kind of just keep
your own time. If you want, you can post the
(17:44):
time on our registration website to see how it compares
with others around the country.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
Fun.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
But we started it during COVID and it brings in
some good revenue, so we kept it going and it's terrific.
We encourage you to sign up if you're not in
this area and you're interested.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Right, I imagine there might be some people and you know,
the Lee calm Our Leecom universe, that maybe you want
to contribute to the scholarship fund, but are nowhere near
the area.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
So you can do the virtual run absolutely.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Or maybe I can and just put up a fake time,
like an.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
Amazing time she ran af All right, terrific.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Thanks for all of that information for share story. What
else is there anything else we need to let the
world know? Of course, our lee com podcast can be
found on all the channels that you listen to podcasts
on Spotify, iHeart and we're on YouTube, Like and share
and subscribe to all of our socials you know who they.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Are, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I need X anything else?
Did I miss anything?
Speaker 3 (18:51):
Just want to highlight too. We'll have some vendors at
the five k event. Like mentioned before, we will have
some door prizes. We have some really nice door prizes
this year, donated massages. We have a peak and peak
resort package that we're raffling off erie otters tickets, No
fee or cost to get into this raffle. It's just
(19:12):
woolpool names. If you register for the event, it'll be
random drawings. So if you're interested in anything like that,
we've we've got a bunch of door prizes, so it'll
come right with the registration.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
It's all provided by our community members that have participated
in the event by donating in kind donations, and they
are wonderful. We've seen a lot of them.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
We're forever grateful yes to any and all of those contributions.
Thanks everyone for joining us today again. The five k
is August ninth. Lauren Mark, did you not run the
five k and like a three piece suit?
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Last year?
Speaker 4 (19:51):
Three piece? I did run it in a certain time.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
Impressive, so impressive and you sweat lash.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
It was definitely Yeah, I'd like to run run it normally.
This T shirt short to me? Yeah, no, not this
although this is basically normal. It was a good time.
They were no one was expecting it, and uh the
comments were gold. Definitely good stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Thanks you guys, Thanks thanks for joining us.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
We'll see Also
