Speaker 1 (00:15):
Hi, this is Chico RSH.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
You were listening to the Let's Go Devil's podcast on
the primetime radio network, Happy Devil's Thursday. This is Devil's
After Dark, coming to you live live from the Primetime
Radio studios inside the Bunker, an undisclosed location and beautiful
New Jersey. Thank god I didn't give out my location
(00:38):
and across continent to the Michael J. Fox Studios in
Beverly Hills, California. We got Scottie of Errus XM Liquid
Metal streaming live on Facebook Live, YouTube, Live x live
and Twitch on the Let's Go Devil's network as the
Devils and Jacob Markstrom get rocked by the Hurricanes tonight,
(01:02):
losing six to three. Not good, Scottie, not good. I
wish I could welcome you on the fine programming which
gets over a one million downloads or more? But how
are you tonight?
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Are you making the official announcement here? Is that?
Speaker 3 (01:19):
What's going on?
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
The official announcement? This is our season debut in season
nine of Devil's After Dark.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Oh okay, okay, but not the other thing.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Oh oh, I've been talking about a million downloads January seventeen.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Oh okay I was officially okay, all right, okay.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
So obviously you have been you haven't been listening to
the Morning WU, then.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Well, the Morning WU does take place at like three
in the morning for me out here in Los Angeles,
so sometimes it's a little bit difficult. Yeah, you know,
so sometimes a little tricky for me to tune in
live to that one. So apologies, King Sam Wu. Welcome
(02:05):
to another season of Devil's Hockey and Devil's After Dark.
Here in a lesso Devil's Podcast Network, as I'm sure
all of you can see. And hello to everybody. Time
chiming in already. Oh my goodness, what's up Dubs and
AJ and Ariel South Fork sasquatch ow. We got some
new some newcomers to the team. I just want to
(02:27):
say hello to everyone. It's great to be back with
you for another season of Devil's Hockey. Of course, this
one is starting right where the other one left off.
But either way, look a look at Sam Wu and
his new microphone over there. Look at it. He's got
like the David Letterman Conan O'Brien, you know that that
(02:49):
talk desk type of mic Now, I mean, that's that's
fancy mister Wu. That's new for the twenty five to
twenty sixth season going on over here at Devil's after Dark.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Actually, I bought this in twenty seventeen and never really
used it.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
I just never used it, just been sitting there. Huh.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, Well, shorts guy made a comment about it, and
then I got all like weird about it, and then
finally I like it.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, it looks good. You don't have to hold it.
You're not supposed to. You're supposed to have like a
pen like Letterman, and you know, like, well, don't actually
hit it though, Yeah, yeah, you know, just yeah, or
make the noises. Yeah, there you go, Now you got it.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, throwing the pen around. You know, look at Sam
Woo almost at the camera, but that's okay.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
That's fine. Sam Wu went to host school over the
summer while we were in the off season, and now
look at him. He's Sam Letterman over here. So welcome
to the team, the new and improved Sam Wu with
his microphone, looking good.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Trying to sound better on air.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
You sound amazing, You sound amazing you.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
I think you got a new microphone, but the audience
can't see it.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Well, I've had this one for a little while now.
Oh okay, I guess you just haven't been listening to
all those other podcasts, Sam Wu. I mean you know, yeah,
the one thing you're actually supposed to be producing. By
the way, Oh, is this the Morning wu intro is
(04:29):
number one on iTunes right now. That's what that's the
that's the last update over there.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
It's catchy. Yeah. I co wrote the song with myself
and Buddy Holly.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Oh okay.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
What I did was, uh, instead of Peggy Sue, I
just inserted Morning Wou and then it out worked.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
You should get a short Sky's band to record like
a cover version of that for you, you know, and then
you could have the punk rock.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Morning Wou Morning Woo.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
There could be that. That's an idea. A friend. I
have a friend named Alan Iverson Ai he does right, yeah, yeah,
behind the scenes.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yes, the the other Allan Iverson, by the way, not
that other Alan Iverson that you're probably thinking of. Yeah, oh,
by the way, although I'm sure that guy gets that
a lot.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Knocking knocking out the phillies. I saw that coming over
the wire.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Oh did they? And I see the the old the
big blue here the giants are somehow up ten points
on the Eagles. So but our Devils, alas could not
overcome there. Who's who's the nemeus? I mean, the Eagles
are usually the nemesis for the Giants. For a long time,
(05:50):
the Mets couldn't win in Atlanta during like the nineties
and the and the aughts. You know, a Turner Field. Oh,
every time they went down there, just like all right,
here's here's a sweep. We're gonna lose three in row,
four in a row. The Devils seem to have found
(06:10):
that with the Carolina Hurricanes because they picked up exactly
where they left off eliminating us from the playoffs last year.
But hey, the boys.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Did put up bad.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Well, you know what we're gonna say, this is early
season mode that's going on here. First game, you know, listen,
Rust gotta get worked off. Saw some bright spots, we
saw some down spots. But the biggest and brightest of
all is that the Devils are back playing hockey. Yeah,
(06:51):
and we know we're not gonna win on eighty two,
but it is a little frustrating. And I know me personally,
I was hoping for a little revenge against the Carolina
Hurricanes this evening, but it was not to be, although
it was an interesting game for most of it. Saved
(07:13):
like a halfway through the third period. But Sam wu
with his new microphone. I think that's a new hat too,
or maybe that hat was actually bought in two thousand
and seven. Oh that was last year.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Okay last year?
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Yeah, okay, okay, either way, Hello, hello everybody. Why don't
we get to talking about the action on the ice in.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Rally, Carolina earlier this evening.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Let's get to the highlights for this game, number one
on the year.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
For the Devil's.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
By the way, their early schedule suck, so uh, the
points are going to be important for this team. Well,
we'll look over the month of October in just a
little bit, but let's get to the game highlights. Marky
versus Anderson Devils. What do we talk about in the offseason?
(08:20):
They got to stay healthy. Man, would really love to
see Jack Hughes play at least like eighty games this year.
I'll give you one. You got a cold, you get
missed one or two? All right, Okay, would love to
see Jack Hughes play about eighty games this year. But
you know we're already starting dinged up. Well, COVID seventh
not in there. Stephan Nason not in there, moved to
long term injury reserve to make room for Luke Hughes
(08:42):
and that new contract, la Chance and Lenny get sent down.
Glenn Denning is resigned, is signed off of his PTO
excuse me, and he is your starting fourth line center
between Gritzuk and Paul Cotter. And by the way, congratulations
the Brett Pesci game number seven hundred. Wow? How and
(09:02):
he took that shot in the back? Oh man blocking that? Oh,
I guess that's one way you'll probably never forget your
seventh hunderd game. Either way. In the in the first period,
it was the Canes that got on the board first.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
With our old friend Taylor Hall.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
This was a really nice tip puck redirected through the
five old past. Jacob Marksham got the spare Frau the
shot from the point. But the big issue with this
one was Simone Nemts getting beat to the puck in
the corner. This was all in the in the defensive
zone and I believe it was the captain heat Share
(09:47):
taking the face off and we won the face off,
but Nemetz was beat to the puck on the boards
that's how the puck was. The turnover occurred, and yeah,
it led to that goal. Got the spare event he
gets it at the point and yeah, Taylor Hall. Really
nice tip there for Taylor. Damn it. I don't want
(10:09):
to admit that, but you know, got to Marston really
didn't have any chance on this one. One nothing Canes. Oh,
I'm sorry, I forgot to. Uh what time was that?
That was four o six into the first period. Other
than that, tim O Meyer laid a nice shoulder into
I don't remember who was someone on the defense for
the Canes. Dougie big hit on Robinson when he was
(10:33):
coming into the zone. Nice shoulder right there from Dougie. Hamilton,
Aho and Eelers looked really good out there. Looks like
they got some nice chemistry. Marky was facing some rapid
fire shots in that first period and he was doing
really good. And actually I think he made a big stay.
Yeah he did on Taylor Hall even before that, going
(10:55):
across side to side, So good on Dougie. A little
later on in the period, Jack Jasper and Dan and
Off starting used a speed got a nice little set
up there. Then off on the side of the net
Kanes hit their first of five posts. Right at the
end of the first period.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Two h Slavin with a high inside.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Oh, that's right. Then that went off the inside of
the post, which was a theme for the entire night
at a yeah, and needs a better aim there, kid,
What can I tell you? You know you want to
keep hitting the posts, have fun with it. But a
strong period for Jacob marsh from in the first really
get the Devil's into it. Four and four action. In
the second, Jack and Jasper on a two on one,
Jack hits the post, then off the far side. The
(11:40):
Kanes get a power play after Paul I think it
was Paul Carter penalty on a two on one right
where he had he kind of had had to do
a hook.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
You know.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
It was one of those good penalty to take, good
penalty to take, and the Kine's got some good chances
and then to kept the Devil's pin. But we know
the Devils have a strong penalty kill unit and it
came out on top. And then oh, at eight point
fifteen of the second period, old friend Dougie Hamilton gets
on the board. That's right, he gets his first of
(12:10):
the year against his old team. This one was which
was Oh yes, this was jessper Bratt basically dancing into
the zone around the blue line, and then he kind
of hesitates up there and he draws, you know, the
defenders to himself obviously, but what that allows is a
(12:33):
lane for Dougie Hamilton to start streaking in. If the
Devils didn't lose this game and they won, right now,
Sam wu would be doing a football call about how
there was a trick snap to jessper Bratt and Dougie
goes out in motion. He's out in the flat. All right,
(12:54):
I'm not gonna do the football I'll.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Tell you what I would have said. I would have
said that what Belichick's fired, keep that gold digger away
from Dougie. That's what I would have said. It's a
North Carolina reference Chapel Hill, all right, you know, all right,
n State you know anyway, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Fair enough, fair enough. Just we're burning bridges already here
in game one, and that add him to the list.
Rod Brindamore and Bill Belichick will never come on the show.
We are trying to alienate all coaches from the state
of North Carolina. But either way, Dougie Hamilton gets the
goal here, so he's cutting towards the middle and Jasper
(13:44):
Brad just lays a nice pass over to him, and
again that's because Bratt pulls the defenders to him. Brat's
got the hockey sense to hesitate there. Once he kind
of dances into the zone. Dougie gets the lane and man,
he shot a nice backhand because he's coming across, so
he shoots the puck back the other way, far side,
(14:05):
backhand shot that got about like mid height on the goaltender.
Anders said. Nice, nice goal there for Dougie Hamilton his
first of the year. Jack and Jasper get the assists
on that one, getting their first points of the year
as well, and then unfortunately the Canes answer right back
(14:28):
at nine to twenty three. KeAndre Miller, who we all
know from that other team that wears blue across the River.
He got traded in the offseason and now he's down
there in Carolina, so he gets his first of the
year not too nine to twenty three after that. So
literally was like a minute and ten seconds or whatever.
A minute and eight seconds later they answer right back.
(14:51):
Sough they go back on top two to one, but
it's not done with the goals in the second period
because someone that I think a lot of Devil fans
are looking to see if he's gonna have one of
those years. It's it's always been sort of a struggle
and it never fully clicked into full gear for Cody Glass.
(15:16):
At other places. I think he's got a real chance
to make a difference in that bottom six. And there
was a couple plays where I was like, oh boy,
but man did he make up for it with a
pretty goal at thirteen fifty four of the second period
(15:38):
to tie the game back up at two.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
This is coming from Loo.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
You underestimate my power with a new contract negotiated and signed.
Oh thank you, it is not only five years long.
He gets the assist over here setting up Cody Glass
and you know this, and we can chalk up to
a Can's early season quote unquote early season play because
(16:07):
they had a really weak chip in at the blue
line that the puck traveled all of maybe four feet
away from whomever that was. I don't I don't recall
at the top of my head, but Luke Luke saw
that and he scooped it up and he sprung Cody
Glass the other way for a two on one, and
Cody Glass decides to just rip a rister from from the.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Face off circle and it goes.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Over the glove side of Anderson far far side. Those
pretty goals. Man, this man, everyone, we should just see
Jack Hughes be able to pull that off, you know,
at first. But it's just man, guys are getting so
much better at just nailing that far side shot. But
Luke gets Luke gets the assist. So Jack and Luke
(16:54):
on the score sheets. On the assist side. Cody Glass
gets his first of the year again at third thirteen
fifty four of the second period to tie it up.
At that time, the Devils were dominating in the face
off circle. And this is the thing of a little
bit of concern, well, just seeing how the game ended
up in the sense that, man, we still have a
(17:17):
ways to go before we were gonna take on Carolina.
The Devil's at one point, I think won nine or
ten face offs in a row. And then at the
end of the game, yeah, the Canes had won the
overall faceoff battle. I gotta look at just look at
(17:38):
it right here on box score. Oh no, wait, it's
under team stats. Face offs won thirty four for the
Canes thirty for the Devils. So there was a definite
drop when it came to that third period, which we're
gonna get to over here right now. But yeah, the
Devils were dominating at that point. They get a power play,
(17:59):
but they don't score. Or the concerning thing was on
that power play they gave up two short handed breaks,
Ajo ringing it off the post and then Martin Uk
and then whoo baby, did Jacob Markstrom flash the glove
over there and make the huge, huge shape, huge shave
(18:22):
to not allow the short handed goal. After that and
the third that's when Brett Peshi took that punk to
the back. Oh man, did that look bad for a second,
But you know, he's a hockey player, just like Sam
Wu's a hockey podcast producer. They don't stay down, they
get back up, they skate off the ice, and they
tough it out. That's what they do. But that one
(18:47):
looked like it sucked either way. Right after that at
ten twenty one, about halfway through the third period, I mean,
the Knes really took over the game. I mean they
really were tilting the ice out the majority of it.
But in that third period they really just put the
pedal to the medal against the Devils. And a lot
(19:07):
of that too is it's the first game of the season,
so not gonna get all, you know, crazed and bent
out of shape or whatever, but it's just it sucks
because it's against Carolina who we just cannot seem to
beat at times, especially on their home ice. So either way,
(19:30):
third period goes. Miller gets the goal, Big Blast gets
an open lane there, Mark Strom gets a piece of it,
but the shot overpowered him and guess what, it's in
the back of the net. That's his second of the game.
Right after that, Taylor Hall then hit the post man.
They hit five posts today. But then Jessper Bratt ties
(19:52):
it up again at three three at eleven thirty eight.
So this time it's the Devils who respond in the
third period, coming from the guy who almost just got
knocked out of the game, Brett Peschi and Luke Hughes.
Luke gets the second point of the game. Jessper brad
his first goal and this was man Peshi. It looked
(20:12):
like he was coming up the boards right and he
got the three of them in a row.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
There.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Peschi's there, Jackson the center, Jessper's on the far wing,
and it looks like Peshi is trying to pass and
lead Jack Hughes, but when he lets it go from
the boards, okay, it gets hit by one of the
Canes players and it turns into a changeup which Jack
Hughes is not able to handle.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Because he's already skating by. But it turns into these
perfect pass to jessper Brat, and it was almost like
it looked almost like a glitch in the matrix when
it happened for everyone probably watching and you know, playing,
except for jessper Bratt, of course, because he then goes
and buries it in the top back owner of the net.
(21:01):
Holy hell. With a shot by him and a broken
play turns into a tie game for the New Jersey Devils.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
But unfortunately it doesn't last too long.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
Another big block by Cody Glass who just got a
piece of a buck, and a good thing he did,
because there was a wide open net there. The Canes
were just starting to pour it on. They hit another post,
the fifth post at right after that, and then Jarvis
scores he then he scores an empty net, and then
Robinson gets a goal too, you know, who was so
(21:37):
instrumental in those first period goals. So ends up six
to three, eugh six to three, the Canes win, the
Devil's fall to oh and one on this season.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
But it's okay, it's only the first game.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
Let's look at the old team statistics Devils. Now the
shots say twenty two to thirty three, but let me
tell you, the Canes must have had about eighty or
ninety scoring chances in this game. Jacob Markstrom. I think
I know Sam Wu wasn't as happy, but I thought
he played extremely well given.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
The amount of rubber that was being thrown his way.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
So the Canes got credited for thirty three shots, but
don't forget five posts. Those don't count as shots on
goal by the way, if you don't know. So, yeah,
the Canes were all over it. Hits pretty even Devil's
twenty five kaynes, twenty seven face off ones, Like we said,
that was at one point one, nine or ten in
a row, and they end up losing the overall battle
thirty to thirty four. Devils were the over They got
(22:40):
the bagel, the everything bagel with cream cheese there on
the power play going over two although one of those
power plays was like thirty seconds, but the other one
they gave up two shorthand up chances. Canes were one
for four. We got, you know, block shots Devil's nineteen,
Caines thirteen, so that was good over there. Takeaways four
(23:01):
Caine six, and then of course the giveaways twenty eight
to the Canes twenty. Let's hope even though we remember
from last year this was an issue with the giveaways.
Let's hope that's an early season statistic here that goes
away with time. But let's hear what you think about
the game. YouTube, Facebook, wherever you might be watching, Twitter x,
(23:24):
whatever the hell it's called Instagram, any of the social medias.
Let's call in our good friend Sam bayh god woo
and see what he and you think of game number one.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Sam Scotty, when I texted in the group text that
Markstrom sucks, I was really referring to that one softy,
you know, in that crucial, crucial moment in the third period,
he gave up that one softy where it hit his
elbow and then it just trickled in. You know. Yeah, yeah,
(24:02):
it's it's it's frustrating. You got to hand it to
the Canes. They played very very well. They came to
play uh oh yeah, and they didn't miss. Yeah, it's
you know, the coaching is great. Uh. Andre Miller played awesome.
You know, he wanted to make impression. He made a
(24:24):
great impression in front of his new teammates and the coach. Uh. Tonight,
let's focus on the positives here. The Devils were in
this game. The Devils were in this game up until
the middle of the third period. Even when they gave
up that that goal where it made three two canes
(24:46):
just for Bratt, the Devils kept on fighting. I like
that part. But this is a rivalry game, Scottie. Yeah,
it's a rivalry game. There's tie breakers are in play
in the division. You don't play as many times in
the regular season for this season with these type of
(25:08):
regular season games. By the way, January seventeenth is our
million party against the Hurricanes. Uh at Prudential Center. Just
wanting at American Whiskey there. Yeah, just stripping it, dripping it,
dripping It's gonna be one of the biggest parties ever.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Did you just say dripping it?
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Yeah? And you dripping dripping it, you know that is
what you're saying. Wow. Anyway, the point I'm trying to
make here is I like, I like what the Devils
did up to that point. But what I didn't like
when they gave up towards the end there. Okay, empty
net goal, fine, but that sixth goal Cody Glass, Like,
(25:57):
you can't allow that to happen. You know, even in preseason.
We had fights in preseason Tampa Bay, Florida. Those are
elite teams that are trying to gain an edge. All right, yeah,
everything matters. Even if you're losing five to three with
(26:21):
seconds to go, you do not allow that to happen.
They shouldn't even get near Markstrom. The game is over,
but you allowed your rival to score there does not
send a very good message for the next time around.
(26:41):
And that's where I get pissed off, because body language
is everything. You gave up. You don't give up to
the last second of the third period, because the whole
season is a journey. This is just one game. Yes,
you may have lost a battle, But what I don't
like is when you lose the battle and you actually
(27:03):
give up even to the last minute.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
That's Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were gonna start
saying quack quack quack.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
Quack quack quack quack.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Quack quack, but or are you gonna put your Herb
Brooks Herb Brooks like, uh Wigan?
Speaker 2 (27:30):
You know, yeah, honestly you gotta. That's the difference between
the Hurricanes last season, oh and the Devils and ran
out of gas.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
The difference between them this season so far.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Yeah, you ran out of gas there? How about you
do something? How about you? I almost said slew puny,
but how why'd you do something out there? You know
the Florida Panthers if they were in this situation. Okay, yeah,
you know the pundits to say those Shenanigans should be
out of hockey. No s a little message, a little
(28:06):
love tap, if you know what I mean, do something.
It's still allowing another goal to be scored in the
final minute of the game. I think it was the
final minute. It was just like I know, the.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Game's over at this point, but yeah, it was where's
your twelve seconds?
Speaker 2 (28:27):
You know? It's like what happened again? It's you know
what I went from excited about this team, even though
they're losing two same old devils.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Well, that's why it's so frustrating, because it's the it's
the same thing again that was in the playoffs that
seems to happen repeatedly when we play the Carolina Hurricanes,
and I see I just lost a bunch of the
messages on YouTube for some reason, but I see Brian here.
Winning in Carolina is almost as important as winning at home.
You know, Eddie said, losing to the Canes. You got it, Eric,
(29:03):
The Devil's won so many face offs tonight and couldn't
keep possession of the puck. That is true.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
That is true.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
First period was all Canes. Yeah, I mean most of
the third was all Canes too. The Devils. We know
the team struggled in the first period last year, so
don't want to see that start happening again first game
of the season. Okay, we give that a little for
the first period here, but we know this team has
issues there, so we're definitely gonna be keeping an eye
(29:32):
on that. Five posts total, Beach Master, five posts total
max As we look disorganized and slow. Yeah, yeah, I'd
say that they looked sloppy. They did again, it's game one,
but we're gonna keep our eye on it see how
(29:54):
it goes. We don't want another season of like what
did they say? What did Butcher Gross say? Who I
gotta say? Butchi did a much better.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
He does a.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
Lot better job now on the NHL broadcast. I will
say that when he first started it and he was
trying to do it as like stick guy, like, it
kind of sucked. But now that he just calls it
a little a little bit, a little bit of his
boochiness comes out there, you know, but like that he
calls it more straight. I think he does a pretty
damn good job with the broadcast.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
Devils.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Yeah, yeah, that's I like this. I like what he's
what he's doing now. But I think he said it
was the Devil's only scored uh fifty one goals in
the first period last year.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
That is not good, not good, So.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
We don't want to see that continue. Max, It's funny,
Max puts Palott looked not good. I don't even remember
seeing him like on the ice tonight. I feel like,
was his name like really mentioned.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
I think he kind of I miss.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Maybe I missed a uh because I was watching a
little bit, you know, while I was still at work.
So there was a couple points where I had to
like pull my earphones my earbuds out, you know, and
answer some questions. So I saw something.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
I only saw him once on the ice. He was
practically invisible the entire game. That's what I thought.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
You know, I heard Brown's name a couple of times.
Uh grits, grits, yu Can Cotter had a couple of
uh nice scoring opportunities. I will say that I think
mainly in the in like late in the first and
I think throughout the second period they had a couple
of really good opportunities. Yeah, a lot like nothing. Temo
(31:44):
had a Timo had a strong game. Again, I get
it's and let's hope that doesn't turn into the same
thing for him last year. Timo did not play bad
last year, but he just didn't score as much as
we are really kind of hoping toes ay Temo score.
But he had a big hit in the first period.
He had a couple of good scoring opportunities as well,
(32:05):
So let's hope that he also gets on the board
early and gets hot early and starts racking them up.
But good call on that. Max Miller had the time.
That's right, he definitely did. Hey Brian with the super chat,
whooa eighty one games to go? That is right, Sarah, No,
(32:31):
we're gonna have some There's gonna be some good games.
This is only number one, like we said, but we
want to keep our eye on those things that were
trends last year.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Let's hope they don't pop up again. Dubs.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
They can't establish themselves from the offensive blue line in,
it will be just more of If they can't, oh say,
if they can establish themselves from the offensive blue line in,
it will just be more of the same. You don't
always have to score, but the best defense is possessing
the in the ozone, which we know this team could
definitely do. When it did go to four on four play,
(33:06):
the Devils did look really good. But the game's played
five on five and they have to be able to
score five. And that's why dan and Off and and
Connor Brown were brought in. Those are two guys that
score a lot five on five. All danan Off's goals
last year were.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Five on five.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
Let's see, I don't think that, Bill says, I don't
think this corps is winning a cup. Okay, we'll see.
Robert Isaacson interesting comments from everyone.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
We were saying this last year. What system is Keith
trying to implement?
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Here?
Speaker 1 (33:49):
Brooke was wiping away tears. Nick says, the kinges improved
their roster this offseason. The Devils did not. I mean
I think they. I think the ain'ts improved in maybe
bigger areas, but I think that I think the Devils
(34:09):
have a better well rounded roster this year. Again, it's
only game one, Nick says the same thing that I
was saying about to Connor. Brown played and I at
least heard his name once or twice. Yeah, I can't
think of Yeah, I can't think of any any time
(34:31):
of hearing Polott's name, you know, through the broadcast now
that I'm really trying to think about it. Dun't dunt dum.
Mercer didn't really have a strong game again, first first game.
We'll see how it goes. Myer and Mercer. You're supposed
(34:57):
to be able to win battles along the board, says Eric.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (35:01):
I think I definitely think Timo wins battles along the
boards and in front of the net as well. We
just gotta get Timo to get one home early. Just
get him hot and put it. Because he scores in bunches.
We know that about him.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
He's very streaky, a slow star starter traditionally.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Traditionally, but that doesn't mean he can't do it one
of these seasons. But I definitely liked his hustle. I
liked his grit. I liked his you know, toughness. That
hit was nice. He was get in front of the net.
So I don't know, I'm fine with fine with Timo
(35:42):
for now. AJ says, I'm up in the air with Jack.
I like him, but he can't play eighty two games.
You know, I was thinking about that. You know, Sam
wu some some bold predictions for this season. I know
we kind of did those the other day, but I
was thinking, you know, my bold predictions. You know, Nico
(36:05):
gets forty goals, gets the Selkie. But for me, like
the success of Jack Hughes is like he needs to
have He needs to score like at least eighty plus
points this season. He needs to be a point a
game player and we need him to play at least
(36:28):
eighty games this season, so like at bare minimum like
success rate. And it's a lot of pressure to put
on someone, but it's Jack Hughes. He's talented and he's
got the talent to do it. But like bare minimum
success rate for Jack Hughes on the season has got
to be like eighty points.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Agreed, agreed, eighty points and healthy going into the playoffs.
That's what we need. Jack Hughes. I do have a
criticism with Jack Cughes tonight. You pull your goaltender and
you're you're taking the puck into the offensive zone again.
(37:09):
It's these backhanded passes that are going to the opposition,
allowing the Hurricanes to come back and score an empty netter.
That's got to stop. It's been happening for years. Like
dump the puck deep in the zone, dump, dump, and chase,
(37:29):
chase after that puck. You know you have a one
man advantage at that point, six on five. You gotta
stop it with these backhand passes. I do want Jack
Hughes to take risks, but not that kind of risks.
That's not a high percentage pass going into the offensive
(37:49):
zone with about a minute something left, your goaltender is
out on the bench. You gotta you gotta protect the
puck better. And you know, and you're a leader in
a pillar of this team. He's got to play better.
And I would assume he would think the same thing.
This is a constructive criticism, but your goaltenders out, you
(38:12):
have nobody passed to get it deep get it deep,
don't pass it to have it intercepted, you know, like flat,
you know, running it back up to the twenty yard line.
Giant segeals making that reference.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
But yeah, yeah, he had twelve minutes tonight, seventeen shifts.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
He's got my plot.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
Yeah, three giveaways, one hit, one takeaway, one block shot.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
Well we got some tonight. I'm gonna I'm gonna venmo
that jersey jersey over to that company in New York.
Have plot eighteen, get it done and over. He's gonna
be freaking out of here done.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
Oh man, did you.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Hear my name? Well?
Speaker 1 (39:13):
No, what is it?
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Uh? It was on Game Day Live?
Speaker 1 (39:18):
Oh, let's well, let you know later. What's up to
Bill Agnew Michael Hay coming back Game one, Dubb says
the Devils were not in the game. The score was
thirty three, but it should have been about eleventh or
(39:39):
a five posts. I got it, Dubs. You know, I agree.
I think Carolina dominated this game for the majority of it.
It was everything. It was the majority of things that
Devils fans were hoping not to see as the As
(40:03):
you know, the Devils are playing the team that bounced
them last year, and it's it looks like just a
complete continuation of it and something rather important. We mentioned
it before as we grow closer to the end of
the show over here. So we just played Carolina. Who
(40:25):
do we play next? Tampa Bay? Then we got Columbus,
Then we got Oh Florida, Oh Edmonton, Oh Toronto, Oh Minnesota,
then San Jose and oh Colorado twice, Colorado twice back
to back.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Fun times in the month of October.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
Oh we get one more with the Sharks after that too.
That's a lot of playoff teams from last year. In
the first month of the season.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
We did talk asual, We talked about it many times.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, But the Devils are not gonna
you know, they really need to get on it and
start playing up to speed because they there is an
opportunity here looking at this schedule that they can fall
behind really really quick and have a massive hole to
(41:23):
dig out of. And not saying that they can't do
it or that it will happen, but the possibility is
one hundred percent there.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
With this lineup of games through the month of October.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
So yeah, it wasn't fun seeing who is that Eric
or Nick or Dubbs. I can't remember said, yeah, getting
getting like dominated like that through large portions of the game.
That's not what you wanted to see. You were hoping
that the Devils would have come out bid a little
(42:00):
bit more. Again, it's game one. But this type of schedule, you.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
Gotta grab the points now like last season, or you.
Speaker 1 (42:11):
Or you just gotta fight. You gotta fight. You're gonna
have to fight for them. Yeah, this isn't This isn't
a grab. This is a you're really gonna have to fight.
This is one of those like stretches you usually see
like in the middle of the season somewhere. But the
Devils are starting out us. So thank you schedule makers
once again for finding yet another new and exciting way
(42:32):
just screw the New Jersey Devils on the schedule, of course.
So either way Devils lose, we're zero and one. Who
isn't no, so it said no Quack I could have
swore I heard Gordon Bombay's intermission speech coming out of
(42:56):
Sam wu there at what point earlier in this show,
Quack quick a J. Says if Jack plays seventy games,
I'll be happy. Seventy plus for Jack would be wonderful.
(43:18):
Be says Brian I'm saying he's got to be eighty
because we want Jack to be healthy and and and
I think a successful season for him is definitely being
a point for before we're old Yellered already.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
Yeah, probably behind the Barn. Team's already behind the Barn,
oh Man.
Speaker 1 (43:43):
But yeah, John, Yeah, they had a lot of Carolina
came up big all around. They played a great game.
They were ready to roll. We know that's how it's
gonna be, uh with any team coached by Rod Brendan Moore.
So the Devils lose, they were in the game for
a while. But you know, we're gonna be honest here
and say Carolina was definitely the team in control for
(44:07):
the majority here. There was some things that they obviously
need to work on. Let's hope they're all early season
game one type of things that are gonna be corrected.
And there were some really good things too. Jessper Bratt,
Jack Hughes, Dandanoff look like they're getting their chemistry, okay.
Paul Cotter and gritz Yuk were starting to show a
(44:27):
little bit of flashes there. They're not getting as much
ice time, so it may take a little bit wilder,
a little bit longer, while Cody Glass makes some mistakes
on the defensive side, but he does put home a
nice goal over there. Can he finally put together one
of those seasons here and really be an effective player?
Can Dawson Mercer step into Stephan Nason's role from last year?
(44:51):
And you know we saw Merse do well with Tuna
and Nico. Well, how's he going to do with Timo
and Nico. We're gonna find out here with Steph on
long term injured reserve. And as Sam Wu said, love
seeing Dougie being like, oh hey, I want to talk
about trading me. Kaboom laying that shoulder down. It was
(45:15):
really nice. Jacob Marstrom strong game and you know, until
the end there letting, but he made some really really
huge saves. It was all over the place. So I
think that's about it. Sam.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
We wrap up this Devil's After Dark Game, edition.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
Number one in the books for the twenty twenty five
twenty twenty six season. Devils lose, but it's okay. There's
eighty one more to go, and we got one on
Saturday night.
Speaker 4 (45:46):
Saturday Night, Sam Wu, the Devils will be down in
Tampa Bay. That's a seven pm Eastern start time, we're
gonna have Game Day Live.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
Of course, we'll have Devils after dark. Yeah, afterwards a
good time. I don't have a little good time, you know,
a little fun maybe maybe a little party afterwards.
Speaker 2 (46:08):
Eh, already I want to thank all.
Speaker 1 (46:14):
Those I guess that's that's the same. Woo. I don't
know how to respond to that, so I'm just gonna
close out instead.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Well, I'm going by the music track. I'm not okay, Yeah,
you know, before I run out a runway, you know
it's already happened on the morning. Woo. Anyway, already I
want to thank all those tuning in. Oh, that's another one.
I'm gonna have to make another track driving the podcast
(46:44):
at midnight till next time Thom's done, Devil's lose six
three to Canes. The next time, Let's go Devil's
