Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm here, I might as well do a podcast. You know,
I got nothing to do for the next hour, and
we're kind of wrapping up, so I might as well
run my podcast. Okay, So I guess you know, I
just finished playing Marvel Rivals for the first time. I
know we're late on this. We've been going at this

(00:21):
for a little while. We've been out for a little while,
and maybe this could be a different format for us
where I can actually just talk about the games.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Marvel Rivals is weird.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
So if you don't know anything about Marvel Rivals, Marvel
Rivals is a hero shooter that just came out of
nowhere in the vein of Overwatch. You can tell also
because of a lot of the objectives being very similar
that they very much had some inspiration from Overwatch. It
does some interesting things. So first and foremost is a

(00:57):
free to play game, which which I am all for. Like,
here's the thing, I'm not against free to play games
as long as they're monetized correctly, and with all the
monetization being skins, I'm for that. Plus you can earn

(01:20):
some of it insights, so it's not like they're blocking
you from any content. The game's not pay to win,
It's just a solidly made game. And of course, what
seems to make or break a lot of these hero
shooters are the heroes. I think that's the first place
we can start. We should start with heroes, then talk

(01:41):
about level design, and then talk about kind of character design.
Actually do heroes and character design together. Let's start with
the heroes. The game is broken up into three classes.
The game has broken up in vanguards, duelists, and strategists.

(02:06):
Strategists are your backliners. They can either throw damage or heal.
Most of them are healers. Duelists are your DPS's. They're
either you've got either the brawling DPS or your frontline DPS.
There's probably more variations. I've seen people categorizing, like the
web slingers and the flyers as a specific kind of duelist.

(02:28):
They're the type that's going to get into your back
lines and really try to mess you up. And then
you've got your vanguards, which are your tanks, and there's
a couple of variations of it. I actually like this
class structure because it's very simple. If you're new to
the game, when you're getting right into the game, you

(02:50):
pick your duelist your vanguard or your strategists based on
kind of what your team has, and the good news
is you kind of get a feel for how they play.
You know that the vanguards are gonna be tanky, they're
gonna be upfront, but they're gonna be and taking the hits.
You know that your dualists are gonna be your damage
to use, you know your strategists. Very simple class structure,

(03:11):
but with the variations in heroes, there is this thing
about them where it's like, Okay, one vanguard over the
other is not necessarily better, but they work in different
scenarios and just like Overwatch where you're kind of pick
countering your opponents, you can definitely do that here too.

(03:32):
I'm actually enjoying that aspect of this game. So i
only have a few hours into the game, so I'm
not out here being a pro player showing you, showing
you this is how you do it. But I'm like,
I like the hero built. They're they're well built, their
kids are there, they're all very strong, so they have

(03:53):
their niches and that is something you want in these
hero shooters. Every hero feels pretty unique. When I played
Doctor Strange, i played Doctor strange, completely different than I
played Magneto or I played Thor, And when you're getting
into them, that's because their kits are completely different. Thor

(04:13):
is a melee guy, where Magneto's arranged guy. You've got shields,
you've got projectile blocks. There's so much in there within
the Vanguard classet on its own that it's like, Okay, yes,
everybody can kind of get their flavor of play, and
that's what you want in these online hero shoots because
you want people to find their play style.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
And then you've got your duelists.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
I don't have as much encounters with the duelists because
I'm like, I'm not a damage dealer. I don't want
to be in the fight. I'm just that kind of player.
I saw an iron Fist go nuts on us on
a game, and so I'm like, iron Fist looks like
a lot of fun if he's going to be a
melee guy.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
I think his play.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Says a little too fast. That's also why I was
like kind of veered away from Spider Man. I also
I stuck around with Squirrel Girl Ranged melee sorry range
AoE damage person fires essentially AOI bombs whenever she attacks.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
And it it's a lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
And then of course I got some time to play
some of the strategists. I've seen Adam Warlock work in
our last game. He was pretty good. I enjoyed him. Uh,
but I'm still loving Jeff. Now you're on the internet,
you know you know Jeff. Everybody knows Jeff, Jeff the
land Shark. He's a strategist.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
And it's like, okay, yeah, we all know Jeff the
land Shark. You know, you got all your little costumes
and and stuff. But overall, Jeff the land Shark has
is a healer on the on the back lines. He
he can deal some AOI damage and he's got a
pretty good damaging ability. But overall I play mostly as

(06:06):
a healer. I'm like, okay, backline, give those healing bubbles.
And then of course, as soon as you get as
soon as you get into the fight and you've got
your old you've got it's Jeff.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Which swallows everybody.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
I use them to grab people and then spit out
my allies and throw the enemies off a cliff.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
How you use Jeff.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
I've seen enough online about this game to though that's
how you play Jeff.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
You heal, and I'm like, I like that.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
It's great, and we haven't even like the variations and
heroes are so great, and that doesn't even bring up
the team play elements. So every hero I'm gonna grab
Jeff for example, every hero has team up abilities.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
You want your.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Characters to work with each other. For instance, when Luna
Snow is in play, Jeff's spit becomes ice and it
powers up abilities. When Groot is in play, you can
ride on groot shoulders. And there's so many aspects where

(07:15):
it's like okay. There are a number of team comps
that it's like, okay, these people work well to each other.
Issue alumnus Squirrel Girl and Spider Man, this is they
get a So when Spider Man's in play, she gets
a web bombs, she launches it to stun and damage enemies,

(07:40):
and Spider Man gets extra web fluid. So there's so many,
so much stuff here that it's like okay. Even if
you these one on one heroes, like your hero is
like oh great, but I'm not feeling it. It's usually
because he's got a pretty good power up. You know,
the people that can write on Groot, the people that
can work with Doctor Strange taking Doctor Strangers another example.

(08:05):
So for instance, he partners with the Hulk. Yeah, he
partners with the Hulk to gain to unleash Gammut energy. Honestly,
this is this is what we were lacking in these
hero shooters.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
So the Hero Shooter. People said the Hero Shooter was dead.
I don't believe the hero Shooter is dead.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
I think Marvel Rivals helps to choose. You need something unique,
You need something to set yourself apart. Unlike Concord, unlike Valgar,
I don't even know its name, and Overwatch overwatches its
own animal. This there's a reason this is being called

(08:52):
the Overwatch Killer. We'll get into that when we get
into like community reception, but overall, it's like, Okay, you
need something to set you apart. The not only having
the Marvel abilities, but having the team up abilities is
such a good play because now it rewards teamwork. That's

(09:18):
my one of my issues with this game is that
other hero shooters is that it did not reward teamwork.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
And I'm like, oh.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Right, you're missing that. There's so much teamwork that can
be done and you're not doing it having specific ability
to be like okay, especially in a competitive game, only
in a competitive game on I haven't gotten into the
competitive spare. I need to watch some of that competitive stuff.
But the partners are gonna come into play because when

(09:45):
you're playing at the top of your game, it's the
unique mechanics that are going to push you over. How
does your team comp work? Are you countering while still
working with your team? Does Jeff de land Shark at
writing on group actually matter? I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
I don't know how you do it.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Competitive Doctor Strange's ability matters, Squirrel Girl's ability matters. It's like,
there's so many things here, especially in the heat of
a game where you bounce between each other and you
bounce between heroes, You're like, okay, no, we need to
pick counter our enemies. Oh you know, if there's a
Jeff the land Shark and an invisible woman in the back,

(10:21):
maybe maybe you need a spider Man. And that's just
how hero shooters work. But the design, like having the
game design in that way that incorporates not only one
known heroes. That's something that's that failed with Concord, And
we never talked about Concord because Concord was Concord and it.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Got shut down within a couple of days.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Why we didn't handle Concord, why we didn't handle any
other heroshoes. Why we've talked about overwatches, because because they're
just the boring of the genre. This one does something
unique that other ones don't don't And the fact that
they recognize that the heat that other hero shooters in
the area are are free to play, but they're not

(11:07):
monetizing it correctly is another aspect that's like, Okay, no,
that made this game good because I've seen how they
did it. Their seasonal structure is really well done. Oh no,
I don't want to play stuff, don't know. I don't
want to see the championships. I don't want to see tournaments.
Apparently there are tournaments. But yeah, so we're seeing that,

(11:30):
and we're seeing this game start to get a lot
of people in there. Before we move on to talk
about community reception, though, I want to chat a little
bit about character design. Characters design is on point. I
gotta say it, so I'm gonna pull Doctor Strange real quick.

(11:52):
It's well designed. You've got his cape, you've got his
but he's a lot more built than other characters. You
get the the core of the character in there, without
without relying on other mediums. The cave is differently designed
from MCU stuff. I'm very glad that they did not go, oh,

(12:16):
we're playing we're doing a Marvel. Everybody knows the MCU.
We should just do mc no design them like the MCU. No, no, no,
design your own stuff. And I really like that Hell
Hell obviously looks really good. Of Course I'd say that
helmet still has very MCU vibes, but that could just
because that's from the comics. Adam Warlock is built very differently,

(12:41):
and all the characters are have distinguishing features. And that's
what matters. When you're playing into one of these games
and you see across the map, you know what character
you're attacking. You you see Doctor Strange coming, you see
Adam Warlock in that, and of course then you have
and they're going for the cute c vibe with Jeff.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Jeff looks cute.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
That's the point. He's a land shark. He's got that
little Jeff caller and he's got those feet. The character
designs are here. You know, the Spider Man, they did
their own very Spider Man suit. They didn't take any
app they didn't they took inspiration, of course from other
things with that like like kind of popped out spiders insignia.

(13:32):
I'm also very surprised that they got Spider Man for
this game. Honestly, I thought Sony would have been like
on them about the licensing rights to this thing. I'm
just very surprised. The character designs are really well done
and and each hero has their own little personality quirks.

(13:54):
I'm just pulling up Scrollgrop because she's my DPS here.
Her design is really well on the squirrel on the
head that every once in a while you get that
comic pop up when you bounce off of one of
your abilities that goes we and then of course when
we're talking about character design, we got.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
To talk about character and interactions.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
There's little conversations that happened between characters before the game start.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
It's hilarious.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Some of them are funny, some of them are serious,
but it's like, oh yeah, you realize that these characters
know each other, they're known quantities. And I enjoy that
these characters are built really well without like, okay, my things.
They're built really well while taking what inspiration they can

(14:37):
from other errors, without directly copying. You know, Wolverine has
the iconic blue and yellow, but he's not in his
classic you know, Wolverine cost him. He's also a tank
of a boy. When you look at him, he's huge,

(15:02):
just a mammoth in game. He's not a mammoth in game,
he's pretty small. But the character designs are where this
game excels because we're like, no, we like the character designs.
That's something you need to have unique character designs that
distinguish from each other and are recognizable enough that it's like, oh,
I know that character. You know, Black Widow's a very

(15:24):
easy one to be like Black Widow. People accuse them
of having very much ripping her design off of overwatches,
What's her Face?

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Black Widow?

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Oh no, Black Widow is this game's overwatches What's your Face?
But that character was obviously inspired by the Black Widow
of the comics, and they took the inspiration here as
a shield agent, and it they ran with it. The
issue they're all distinct without seeming like they're coming from
something else. They have those comics feels without feeling like

(16:02):
they're ripping off another medium. They had their own designs.
I love that. I think more games need to take
inspiration from that. And while we're here, let's quickly cover
the community response. The community response has been incredible for
this game. There's a reason why it's being called the

(16:27):
Overwatch Killer because because Overwatch is such a medium, that
a non medium, a game that has been mishandled for years.
They had Overwatched, they were doing really well. They did
Overwatch too. They made a bunch of promises. They broke
those promises. I want to everybody to know. They promised

(16:47):
us a PvP, they promised us a campaign. It never
happened for Overwatch too. Blizzard flat light about it, of course, saying,
treat Jeff as a dog. Yes, you treat Jeff as
a puppy. Jeff is a cute little puppy. Sorry, I'm
doing this live again. Kind of at the end of

(17:08):
my stream, I wasn't planning on doing like a podcast
episode today, and I'm like, I got through Marvel Rivals
and like the stream was going a little bit normally,
and I'm like, this is fun. I'm having fun. I
feel like this is a game that's gonna be better
with people. But I got some thoughts on the game.

(17:33):
I got a lot of thoughts on the game, and
I need to get them out before I drag somebody
else in. But yeah, so the game's designed really well,
the characters are designed really community. This is the Overwatch killer.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
People have been saying.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Every game has been calling themselves the Overwatch killer. I'm
glad that this game game game didn't come out and
say they were the Overwatch Killer. We can just say
it's the Overwatch Killer because it is. Because we saw
the numbers. I wish I could pull up the numbers here.
I don't have it with me because it's kind of impromptu.
But the the response to this game, I think it

(18:11):
hit like four hundred thousand Steam players and at the
same time Overwatch dropped to like ten thousand or twenty
five thousand Steam players.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Yeah, this was ridiculous.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
You could see when you compare the two like player
graphs for those two games. Overwatch plummeted when this game
came out because people that played Overwatch they liked the
Hero shooter. They were just looking for something that was better.
And the fact that this company doesn't seem greedy. Everything's

(18:47):
well made. I need to check like some I want
to check some prices, like now get me out of
the tournament stuff. I want to see what their their
currencies are. So you got one, so you got one
lattice that converts into another currency. Okay, that's your that's

(19:11):
your paid currency. So let's take a look at some
of these skin costs real quick. Okay, so the units
and those are the same. I gotta say there's some
pricing issues here. Holy crap.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Sorry. As I'm looking at this, I'm like, these skins
are absurd.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
Let me see, one hundred is a dollar, and yeah,
one hundred of those are the credits, which means that
is their skins are about sixteen to twenty dollars.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
That is whoa.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
And I guess if people want to pay that much
for a skin, that's up to them. I'm just glad
it's not pay to win.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Oh see.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
And you got like Wolverine and the Deadpool, so you
obviously got stuff that they can branch out. No Way Home,
Spider Man. So I'm seeing it like they've got their
own designs, but they're also incorporating other designs. Back to
the kind of the community stuff.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
The community has been insane. They love this. We've seen
it all online.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
This game went nuts as soon as it released, whether
that be because it was good marketing or because the
players actually got a hold of it and were like, no,
this game is great. Also, why am i in?

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Oh? Oh?

Speaker 1 (20:37):
And of course there's server steps three US servers beautiful. Sorry,
I'm going through a lot more as I'm looking at
this game, because I'm like, like, as I'm like doing
my podcast stuff, I'm like, there's so much more here.

(20:57):
The community is here, the community is playing, Unity is active.
They enjoy it, They are making memes. They've turned Jeff
into an absolute unit, not just in these memes, but
because of how he's played, because everyone plays him as
the healer until he uh, I'm gonna jump into practice

(21:17):
to show people. Yeah, everybody plays him as the Healer
up until they get until they get his ability alts ready,
and then he charges in.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
Sorry, I like Jeff.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
So here are my characters. I play Thoor, Magneto, squirrel Girl,
and Jeff. I don't need introduction to that. I just
want to grab Jeff. I do have one complaint. I've
been very fair with this game, but I do have
a complaint. The announcer is so annoying. I'm sorry, but

(22:04):
the announcer is annoying as all get out, and it
bothers me. Okay, so Jeff, a lot of people wait
for Jeff's old eat everybody, go find a ledge and

(22:27):
spin them out. Wow, that was a bad example, but
that's pretty much how Jeff rocks. There's so much to
this game that it's like, it's so much fun if
you I mean, what's also the file size is perfect.

(22:52):
It's about fifty gigs. It's not too big, not too small.
It's not it's not so small that it can cause problems,
but it's not too big that it's like you need
to uninstall everything to download. And that's just on console
because I'm a console player all the way. Yeah, overall,
I've those are my thoughts on heroes.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
There's rhyming, rivals.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
There's so much here that it's like I want to
break it down as we go and as play some
more of it, so you might see us playing some
more marvels. Maybe not on stream, just because it's it's
not the long stream type thing. I'm like, I kind
of want to just play some longer form games when
I stream. But it's fun. The games is a lot
of fun. Bring your friends. The game is much better

(23:36):
with friends. It's well designed, the community loves it. Completely free.
I don't even feel tempted to buy anything, which is great.
You know, it's all stuck behind the in the seasonal stuff,
and you just go to the play and you're just like, oh, perfect.

Speaker 2 (24:01):
Yeah, honestly, the game's great. Play the game.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
I encourage everybody to go play this game and make
sure Blizzard knows that overwatches unnotice. I think that's where
we're gonna wrap today. I've got some other stuff I
gotta do. We're gonna finish up here and I will
catch you guys later
