I hope everybody had a very nice Thanksgiving. I just
got back from a trip down south to Seattle. My
kids were in for the week and my son does
(01:44):
live in Seattle, my daughter lives in Denver. We had
what we call a Wicked Thanksgiving, as we went to
the movie on Thanksgiving and then on Saturday we headed
into Seattle to go see the stage show of Wicked,
and then to top it off, last night, we watched
The Wizard of Oz on Blu Ray. Believe it or not,
(02:07):
if you like old movies, it's a great movie to watch.
It's also great if you're a big Wicked fan to
get some of the insight as well. But just how
movies were made back and I think it was released
in nineteen thirty nine is just kind of fun to watch. Today,
I'm going to be diving into the history and transformation
of Walt Disney's world's most iconic parks. Today it's Disney
(02:28):
MGM Studios, now known as Disney's Hollywood Studios. This episode
is all for you Disney history buffs and park enthusiasts
and who love to learn how a park evolves to
meet the dreams of its guests. So grab you Mickey
ears and we're going to roll right into this, and
then we're going to finish up the podcast a little
(02:50):
bit of a twenty twenty five travel your favorite segment
in mind. Hey, Steve, So the birth of Disney's MGM Studios.
It all began on May first, nineteen eighty nine, and
when Disney's MGM Studios officially opened its gates. The park
was a vision as a celebration of Hollywood's golden age
and magic of movie making. It was Disney's answer to
(03:10):
the Universal Studios Florida, which was being developed at that
time just a few miles away. Now, those who know
me that MGM and Hollywood Studios are my favorite Walt
Disney World parks. It's also the first park that I
go to every time I travel to Disney World. It's
just been something I've been doing for all these years,
(03:31):
and I continue to do that. I was just there
in September, and when I was there in September, I
stayed at the Beach Club and I was able to
walk over to Hollywood Studios. Though it was extremely hot
in September, I did make the walk and as soon
as I got into the studios, I headed right down
Sunset Boulevard to the Hollywood Tower of Terror. It's still
(03:52):
my favorite attraction. Disney didn't want to create a theme park.
They wanted to immerse guests in the glamour of Tinseltown
while going back the curtain on how movies and TV
shows were made. Now again, if you know me, I
love behind the scenes stories. Join me on my Ears
the Ears podcast, Mickey and I go behind the scenes
as Mickey has some great stories as well. We talk
(04:13):
a lot more about Disney. Actually, we talk all about
Disney on that podcast. You can also download that podcast
at podbeanspeaker dot com, Apple Podcast as well. MGM Studios.
The park was built as both a theme park and
a working production studio. Now, I don't know those who
(04:34):
are big history buffs at MGM and Hollywood Studios knows
that the Backlock Tour, which was just so much detail
and so much fun to go on. To me, it
was the Crown Jewel. Back then it was a two
hour tour that included a tram ride through the working
production areas. I look at the iconic movie sets. Guess
(04:57):
even experienced the Catastrophe Canyon effect. Now that was they
put us right in the middle of making a movie,
a disaster movie. I highly recommend you going to the
Internet and googling Catastrophe Canyon at MGM Studios and you
will just get a kick out of watching the videos
(05:17):
on that. And just remember that MGM Studios, which is
not about the movies. It had attractions like the Great
Movie Ride, one of my favorites as well, which took
you through the legendary scenes from Hollywood classics, and the
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, which gave guests a live
taste of action packed filmmaker now talking about Indiana Jones
Epic Stunt Spectacular. If you get there early enough and
(05:41):
move toward the front, you might get picked to be
part of the cast. I happened to do that so
many years ago where they did pick me. I was
there early enough, I was standing, I was tall enough,
and I got picked to be in the cast as
somebody in the market. I got to addressed in the
garb and everything else and spent about twenty five minutes
in the market milling around shopping as well. Got to
(06:05):
get close enough to the actors and the stunt actors
as well. It was a great deal. It was fun, exciting,
and I felt so cool. Now, the question is when
did MGM Studios become Hollywood Studios. Well, the transition officially
happened on January seventh, two thousand and eight. The name
change reflected a shift in the park's focus. Dissey wanted
(06:27):
to move away from being a behind the scenes movie
making park and embrace a broader celebration of Hollywood inspired
stories and immersive worlds. The partnership with MGM or Metro
goldwyn Mayer also ended, so rebranding was in order. But
beyond the logistics, the change was about evolving guest experiences.
(06:49):
By the early two thousands, few movies were being made
at the park's production facilities, and guest feedback showed that
the visitors wanted more immersive attractions and less emphasis on
behind the scenes tours. That's right, Hollywood Studies became the
perfect platform to transport guests into the favorite movies and shows.
The focus shifted from showing how movies were made to
(07:10):
letting guests live those stories. Today's Disney Hollywood Studios is
completely different from that park way back when. In the
MGM days, it's known for its immersive lands, cutting edge attractions,
and we'll start with the biggest one in the most
latest one, which was a Star Wars Galaxy Edge. This
fourteen acre land, let's guess, step into the galaxy far
(07:32):
far away. You can fly the Millennium Falcon Escape the
first order of on Ride of Resistance, build your own
light saber in the workshop. It's just not a land,
it's an experience. Now. One of the things that I
hear consistently and read about is that Rider Resistance breaks
down a pretty regular basis, and that is frustrating for
(07:54):
us as guests. But let me tell you, they do
their best to get it back up and running and
it's well worth it. The immersive experience you have. It
is an experience. Highly highly recommend it. And on Millennium Falcon,
if you want to fly with Jabacca as your lead pilot,
(08:15):
email me book a trip and I'll give you the
biggest secret how to do that. Continue on with the
transformation from MGM to Hollywood Studios, we can't forget Toy Storyland,
which opened in twenty eighteen. It's a playful world where
you shrink through the size of toys and explore Andy's backyard.
Attractions like Slinky Dog Dash and Aliens Swirling Saucers are
(08:39):
a hit with families, but my favorite is still Toy
story Mania. My wife and I have this competition every time,
both in Disneyland as well as Disney World. I guess
my age and my eyesight. She's getting much much better
and she's beat me the last couple of times. It's
a fun, fun attraction. Go through the queue, look for
the hidden Mickeys. It is just It's a great playland
(09:01):
as well. Hollywood Studios also has embrace more modern storytelling
with the attractions like Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is
the first ride to feature Mickey and Minnie in their
own attraction and uses mind blowing trackless ride technology. That
is where at Disney Hollywood Studios where the Great Movie
Ride was and it has its own place in Mickey's
(09:24):
Toontown at Disneyland. Now. One thing you also need to
know about Hollywood Studios Parks Entertainment from Fantasmic the night
Time spectacular it has returned. It's better than ever to
live shows like Beauty and the Beast, and, for the
first time in forever, a Frozen sing along celebration. There's
something for everyone at Hollywood Studios. The transformation from MGM
(09:49):
Studios to Hollywood shows Disney's commitment to evolving with its guests.
While it's better sweet to lose some classic attractions, the
park today offers something truly unique, the chance to step
inside the worlds of stories that we love. Whether you're
a fan of the classics or a first time visitor
excited about the new lands, Hollywood Studios remain a celebration
(10:10):
of magic of storytelling, past, president and future. If you
want to head to Walt Disney World and visit all
four parks, reach out to me. Let's book your twenty
twenty five Disney World trip. So, like I said at
the top of the podcast, I spent both Thursday Thanksgiving
tradition with my families go to a movie. We went
(10:32):
to see Wicked, and on Saturday we went to see
Wicked in the theater and down in Seattle. And then
last night again we watched The Wizard of Oz and
some of the unanswered questions from the original story now
makes so much more sense when you watch the movie
(10:52):
and as well as the stage production. Speaking of excitement,
twenty twenty five is shaping up to be an amazing
year for trial. In this edition of Hey Steve, I'm

twenty twenty five is shaping up to be an incredible
(12:18):
year for travel. Top destinations include European river cruises. I'm

cruises offer a mix of history, Christmas markets, and relaxation.
Another hot place to go in Asia's Japan. Japan, with
its continuing buzz post to twenty twenty one Olympics and
(12:40):
cherry blossom seasons are in high demand. And of course,
anything Disney in twenty twenty five, because Disney has some
new adventures in the parks as well as a new

trend in twenty twenty five travel? Believe it or not,

families are opting for guided tours. Question five, Hey Steve,
is travel protection travel insurance worth it in twenty twenty five?

Hey Steve, what's the best way to plan for multi
generational family vacations in twenty twenty five. Multigenerational trips are
one of my specialties. The key is finding destinations and

(14:55):
are excellent no options because they offer activities for every
age group. I'll help you pick the perfect destination, secure
group discounts, and coordinate all the details so everyone has
a stress free experience. Question seven, Hey Steve, how far
