The show you're about to listen tois very old and comes with a warning.
When we recorded these shows over adecade ago, the world was a
different place and we were little morethan children. As a result of this,
you might hear a few things that, by today's standards, we judge
to be inappropriate or offensive. Pleasedon't be offended. In the years that

(00:24):
have passed since recording these shows,we've all grown up to be wonderful,
loving, liberal, freethinking, openminded individuals. If the US from over
a decade ago say something to upsetthe you of today, please understand that
we're as disgusted with ourselves as youare. But isn't this what life is
all about? Learning and growing. We all said and did things in our

(00:46):
younger days that make us cringe whenwe think about them. We just recorded
it and put it out on theinternet. With all that in mind,
I hope you enjoy the show.Oh and there's just one more thing.
Don't email the or try to entercompetitions. We don't have that email anymore
and all the competitions are over.We do have a Facebook group where you're

(01:07):
very welcome to discuss any aspects ofthe podcast. Please visit simply Syndicated dot
com for more information establishing data linkaccessing Hello and welcome to episode number forty
two and Make It So a StarTrek podcast. This week we're going to
be doing it our very second, very second episode commentary of my favorite episode

(01:30):
from season two of Next Generation TheRoyal very second. Yeah, sorry,
I was forty second episode. No, a bit of a cross franchise in
joke there. Maybe I know itwas all wrong. It was no wrong
the answer to life the universe? No, no, no, okay,
it may be, but if itis, I'm not aware of that,

(01:52):
and it's fluke right, okay, always get the sense that that was the
case. Anyway. So yeah,Richard's back. Sorry, I'm back a
way. Yeah, but Will andMike were brilliant, so yeah they were.
Yeah, yeah, no loss tothe show not having me there.
I shouldn't say that, really,you shouldn't say that, otherwise you'll be
usurped. Anyway. So what youwant to do is get your star tut

(02:15):
at the Next Generation DVD or VHS, depending on how you choose to live
your life, and get it readyto hits engage on the Royal in three
two one engage, so you shouldhave something happening first, prays a picture
Green planet. Captain's log started fourtwo six two five four. They're entering

(02:39):
the atmosphere of this green, smoggyplanet, which we'll see a number of
times in the future. So thisis one that we're never going to see
again. The only reason for beingthere is that no one has indeed been
there before. Well, they've discoveredan unusual upper atmosphere at distortion. I
believe this is very rare. It'slike a mapping mission where something happens,

(03:00):
yeah, and you've got something todo. Ah, I see, So
this is this is sort of likewhat and what the excel Shea was doing
in between Star Trek five and StarTrek six, you know, cataloging gaseous
anomalies and Beta quadron. Only theEnterprise did it for two weeks. Yeah,
right, Okay, we're still waitingfor Riker to grow into his beard.

(03:22):
At this point, he looked athim. There spangle the little guy.
He's got the beard. He's gothis hooks on it, but he
hasn't know. He looks like it'sa fake beard. He's wearing yeah at
the moment, and his hair isvery big there. It's sort of a
cross. This is a very sortof Season two Riker did have big forehead,

(03:43):
big forehead hair. See actually pushingyou towards the ape like image.
I think he looks He looked goodwith the beard when he got a bit
older, when he got a bitmore weathered. Yeah, and at this
point he still looks too young forthe beard. He could get away with
no beard at this point, what'spiccard yammering? ANABT is talking about remarkable

(04:04):
archaeology. This is character exposition. This is just another bit of See,
I'm very interesting. I still thearchaeology is just funder and lots of old
cultures, even though the see thatwas the interesting thing with Picard was the
fact that there were all his oldcultuchers that he used to love, when
really you'd be you'd be busy likeworking out all the new ones before you

(04:28):
got to the old ones. Surely, I don't know, I don't know.
Maybe you learn from the past likethat. And some people say that
I think story and call those people, well, his story, lots of
people. I try to do it. He's drinking tea gray hot there of
Green Planet. Yes, but pelBrian he's got a bit of work.
Yeah, looking ever young and trimstill with that magical throw, but a

(04:54):
shorter throw than he grew later.I was always impressed with how well the
people doing the lighting on the controlpanels always match that bit that Chief o'briand
does with his hands, the bigswoop up motion, and the lights always
follow his hands perfectly. You'd thinkthere'd be a timing problem there once or
twice. They must have probably workover. They probably had takes sixty,

(05:15):
you know, they probably only didthe shot once. Yeah, and then
they just kept the lighting the sameand every time they just use the same
stock shot. My god, they'vegot a bit of metal with NASA and
a flag on. It's one ofthose American flags, isn't it. Yeah,
I'm not sure. It's not avery recognizable flag. It's quite obscure.
Rich is going to tell us hisfifty two stars. No, I
don't think so, is he?I think so? Yeah? What the

(05:39):
fifty second? There aren't really there? They aren't there now, Yeah,
I know, but I mean whatdo they I can't remember off the top
of my head. I know it'sit's England and Wales. I'm going to
be hurt. It's not England andWales. Right, it's definitely not England
and Wales. Mexico and Canada,New New Mexico, the other Mexico.

(05:59):
They call it mexic Co in Canada, that idea, because you've got no
you just call it Mexico. Wouldn'tyou just call it mexic It took over
Mexico, Mexico and New Mexico.Yeah, but then then the old Mexico
would be your new Mexico. Yeah, you're just gonna have to come up
with a new name for Mexicans wouldhave to come. Yeah, they'd have
to come to terms with laxagon laws. Um. So here we go the

(06:25):
standard title sequence again, minus tothis Crosby's name, this time because she
died, because she died, Monstergot her, but she died. M
Michael Dawn as a warrior and wharfUm okay, this is yeah this this
title sequence never gets more interesting.Um. In fact, I like the

(06:46):
planet swooping bit at the beginning ofthis shot is classic of the enterprise coming
up from underknees. Yes, itis classic, but once you've seen it
six hundred million times, you doget a trifle board of it. Not
that I'm saying that it's a badtitle. Well, it is actually a
pretty awful title sequence, if youcould bear the Star Trekt title sequences.
It's not the best one. No, it's not the best one though.

(07:08):
So here we go. The analysiswas terrestrial in origin. Well that's good.
You wouldn't wanted someone else nicking yourlogo if you NASA, would you
know? I think the court caseinvolved if well, it didn't come from
a NASA spaceship. What does NASAstand for? Need another seven astronauts?
All right? Did you just thinkof that on the spot. That's a

(07:30):
very odd joke, right, Okay, it's a very I can't believe you've
never heard that. No, I'venever heard of that one. I should
have said I thought of it rightthen listeners would have. But they might
have. They might have rumbled you. People would know, Okay, we'd
get an email. I'm not goingto go down that road, right.
I think it's North American Space Agency, North American Space Agency. So there's
nothing generic about that which we couldbe transposed into cling on or anything like

(07:54):
that. No, no, no, okay, wasn't sure. Where's these
there of? According to George W. Bush space is still a probably high
priority for NASSA. So that's goodthat they're still thinking about it. I
know that it's nice to know thatthey're still thinking about it. In fact,
that's actually one of those dodgy GeorgeBush one, because I've heard that
one attributed to Dan Quail as wellanyway, so it could be both of

(08:18):
them. It could be both ofthem. The big old type two phaser,
yes, weren't they showed? Yes, well, they had the added
advantage of if your phaser run out, you could hit somebody with them,
beat them to death, and todeath with the bot of your phaser.
You see there again with the lightson his fingers. Never once did his

(08:39):
hand get above. You know. That's why he got promoted. He's the
best. And they've beamed down toa sound stage. It's no set,
a dark sound stage. This wasThis was a happy budget day for it
was. I mean, what thefuck? This is supposed to be a
multimillion dollar television production and was itbeam down to a black sound stage with

(09:03):
a revolving door. This is aninteresting planet. You know, you would
sort of think, fuck um,I just they've got the atmosphere above sweeping
around which doesn't match the atmosphere fromoutside. But never mind. Well you
can't see the blue sky from space, but here you can definitely see where

(09:24):
the lighting rigs are. Oh interestingdown looking up at Picard there with the
old the big circular window above hiscircular head. Yeah, I'm just always
amazed that they go through the door. I wouldn't go through the door,
but they're there to go where noman has gone, understand, But you

(09:46):
know, it's the job. Ibeam down to a planet that was otherwise
deadly to me except for a smallbubble of environment, and it had nothing
in it. But a revolving dooralways says proceed with caution. And I
know it's your job, and Iknow Wolf's there, and I'd feel much
more comfortable like that, But rightnow I'm just a little uneasy about the
idea at this point. Now theystep through the door into the Royal,

(10:09):
I'd be feeling pretty scared at thispoint, you would, But it's still
their job. Ridge. I know. It's like you get into movies you
should see and saying I'm not talkingabout films this week. You do do
that on a regular basis, soI shouldn't really go on about it.
Okay, so this is a wolf'shead. Gears still look dodgy at this
point. The hair's getting longer,it's still not quite quite there yet.

(10:31):
No, Deanna Trow is looking muchmore respectable than last season as well.
Well, she's lost the black sortof uniform with the bubble hair and everything.
Herb's gone her brown stage. Soall in one stage as well,
all in one, but we'd havethe brown and the lilac of course.
Yes, the action figure was thelilac. It was yeah, Wesley,

(10:58):
Wesley and woman at console. Well, she's Data's understudy, isn't she.
Apparently she's there ready if Data needsto go, which she often does.
You know, is a man abouttown. Yeah, whereas he's still signing
the ship as a training mission, thousands of people's lives in his hands.
YEA good responsibility for a fifteen yearold kid around an unknown planet with yeah,

(11:22):
with some kind of atmospheric anomalies.Yeah, that's a that's a good
decision, good command decision, definitely. Okay, so this is actually not
a bad set. Am I sortof taking it that this is a kind
of casino royal esque Yes, yesyou are, Yeah, Yeah, it's
supposed to be a Vegas casino, but they've not got They didn't have the

(11:43):
rights to that book. So well, it is a nice casino. They
just made whatever they made. It'snice, it's good. There's a job.
Well, that guy's been in shiploadsof TV. Absolute shit. I
recognized him as well. He generallyplays your nasty sort of smart, slightly
kind of your kind of oh yeah, corporate, corporate, corporate. Yeah,

(12:07):
he is one of those sort ofand give you smile at you while
I stab you in the back, that kind of look. I'm doing it
to say, you weren't telling mefor something else? Bad idea? Yeah,
but like you which yeah, nothingnothing. So this is what is
his name again, Rico or Ritathat he's thinking about the kid's name,

(12:30):
the kid Mickey D. No,he's not afraid of Mickey D. But
he should be because he's just akid. What's his name? He looks
about thirty five, you know this, YEI, But he's supposed to be
well, m Rico. Given thatthis is twenty years old as well,
we're guessing he's in his fifties.Now. God, he does look young
as well, because what has hebeen in He was definitely in r and

(12:52):
he was a bastard than that. And I know he was in something else
recently as well. Well, neverknow. Yeah, he kind of like
he's one of those guys who's upfor the same roles as the guy plays
Kelso and Scrubs is always up forthat sort of competition. It doesn't look
as old as Kelso though, No, but this is twenty years ago.
Yeah, but Kelso is in thisas well, isn't he not this episode?

(13:13):
But when's his episode of next year? That season three? And he
looks pretty young in that, Yeah, I know, but does he look
as young as this guy? Maybehe had more botox. I don't know
it was botox around in nineteen eightyeight. No, no, it wasn't.
No, right, Okay, here'ssure about that, Yes, very
right. It's a recent phenomenon,A recent phenomenon, Yes, the ability

(13:35):
to not use your face, yes, okay, yeah, so, yeah,
they didn't put much money into theexterior set, probably because they plowed
a ship ton of money into theinterior. Either that or they borrowed the
serrup from another TV show, probablyfilming somewhere on the Paramount lot. You
know what, I don't think therewas any need for more money to be
spent on the set for Outside. It was adequate. It did its job

(13:56):
well. Adequate as a large blackspace is adequate. Yeah, all right,
Okay, they're spending a lot ofmoney on this. Look at all
the extras and all the tables andstuff like that. It's a big one.
I reckon. This was another setbeing used. I reckon. One
of the exacts was wandering around. One of the writers was wandering around and
there's mate on another show, sohad come over here look at what we're
doing. And he came over andhe's like, oh, how could we

(14:16):
work Listen to star trek Holid thatgoes wrong? Now we did that already.
Oh yeah, they could go downto a planet and there's an alien
life form who traps them in thebuilding. This is one of the most
sort of out of left field episodes, isn't it. I Mean it's actually
this is supposed to be trekking throughspace. Yeah, we spend this entire

(14:37):
episode in this damn hotel. It'sactually quite a good episode in many respects,
and I can see why you choseit as your best episode because there's
a lot of there's a lot oftimes when they use a particular sci fi
device, like the alien talking metaphorsin Dharma, And this is a good

(15:03):
one because the actual explanation for whythere is a casino royale in the middle
of a planet with no other lifeforms on is actually quite a good explanation.
It's quite like it. It's youknow, it's quite a feasible sort
of end to the Yeah, andit's a fairly out there sci fi idea.
I've never seen it before, I'venever seen it since, but you

(15:24):
know, it's it's you know,it's a clever. We'll have to copy
it and see if we can getaway with it. Probably not, possibly
not. Why is Wesley working thereon the same computer station as Jody?
Do you know what's really annoying isthat there's going to be somebody sat in
his seat. Oh no, we'renot going to pan around long enough,
but there's going to be someone satin Wesley's seat who is superior in rank,

(15:48):
who's just there to fill in.And then Where'sley's going to come back
around? And he's going to say, move, move my chair, my
share, I'm the captain's pet.And this tenant or actual ensign is gonna
get up and oblige him and goback, because that's just the way it
is. On Captain Boccard's bridge. The acting ensign gets a good job.

(16:12):
Well, you know, if hefantasies your mum, you're in what a
jip? Yeah, or if hefeels guilty about the depth of your dad.
Now again, this cowboy, thisTexan guy, because of course all
Texans are cowboys, of course, and they all wear that that thing around
the neck. Do you know whatthat thing is called that because it's lace
things. No, it's not atie. Well, it's like it's a

(16:34):
text Now there you go. That'sit's like a brooch tie. Well his
is like a broach. But there'sa lot, and you suppose you could
have many different styles of that bit. That's quite an extravagant one that you
usually compared to what you usually see. The amazing sunglasses as well. So
I don't know what they're called, but the only text and people wear them.

(16:57):
I'm sure I've seen Mexicans wear them. The fifty first State, Yeah,
I want to know, now,I want to know. I don't
know why they called what the fiftyfirst and the fifty second states were.
Did we miss that bit? Werewe talking? I don't know. It

(17:17):
must we've been talking the whole time, so maybe no, we've missed that
bit. Are you sure you're notmaking it up? No? I'm not
making it up right, Okay? Now, yeah, I always tried to
see through that woman's dress and seeif there was a nipping there anywhere,
but there wasn't. As always disappointing, I never noticed that, you know,
if you're not. No, thatwas one of the sort of you

(17:40):
know, the younger all television andwhat's that? That's that's quite naughty for
star trek Um. But no,no nip. It's all cunningly covered up
by lace. They save all thenaughtiness for the space named Dabbo Girls they
do. Oh god, so thishas got a kind of fluorescent, sort
of hazy lighting to it. Itlooks smoky, is what it looks like.

(18:03):
I think. Yeah, he useda particular filter for that. It's
quite good. This is a comedymoment. This is Data playing cards and
winning with a cowboy hand, andwe like to see him humanized and amused.
But this is this is cheating, isn't it. No, this isn't
him cheating. He cheats later on. Yeah, he cheats at the end.
Right at the moment, he's justshowing off his card playing prowess.

(18:26):
Yeah. I think he may haveexplained that he was from France to say,
don't funny that how he's never Yeah, how exactly do Americans are actually
doing? That's what French people looklike? No, I think it's just
a funny device device for Star Trek. Slightly racist as well, don't you
think no or xenophobic? No,no, No, that's implying that all

(18:48):
French people or person I don't.I think you're going a little over the
top with it there. I'm justcurious. I mean, would you not
be insulted if that was the perceptionof you in a mainstream American television program.
I don't think that all the Englishwere actually I don't. I don't
think you're claiming to be French provesthat all the French people are slightly jaundice

(19:11):
or do they get away of it? The fact that Pricard is French,
Well, Pricard's no more French thanData is, let's be honest, But
his character is meant to be French. He goes back to French and then
no decent French actors. There areplenty of decent They all have Arcsatric Stewart,
you know. But if I was, if I was writing the character

(19:32):
of a French captain, I wouldthen expect them to try and cast a
French actor. Yeah, you'd belooking, You'd be thinking a French actor
in your head, wouldn't you. This takes us to inn movies. You
should see point. But this isall about people with non American accents have
to be English or not speak English. Yes, we the British voice represents

(19:56):
the foreign voice. Hence you watchedsomething like Rome and they're speaking in very
British accents. And though I don'tthink the Romans did, no, no,
yeah, that's only a very recentrule, as pass and glory will
prove to you. All right,I'll give that, which is an accommodation
of the French military speaking in Englishand American accents. Yeah, apparently that's

(20:18):
the old ladies playing submachines. Lookat him, go yeah, waiting for
that siring to garth and give thema heart attack. And they're not going
to pay attention to anything. Thiscrazy yellow guy says something is clearly now
a miss. So the fact thatyou've walked into a casino in the middle
of a void. You've lost communication, and then you decide to spend ten

(20:40):
or fifteen minutes just wandering around havinga look. They're exploring there. You've
lost communications. I think you shouldgo home when you lose communication. I
think you do too. I thinkthe first thing you do is walk out.
But they've they've tried that old War'sgoing to break a window. No,
he's not. That's the wall. That's the War's going to smash the
war the wall in that's weird. You know. He just tries pushing it,

(21:06):
doesn't he. Yeah, I meanyou've got a phaser on you,
for fock's sake. Well, itdoesn't really need to be a special wolf
for you to not be able toslowly push through it, does it?
And I don't think wolf could pushhis way through the brick wall of this
house just by doing what he didthere. Data might be able to maybe,
So I'd love to watch that celebritydeath natch. Phaser will do no

(21:26):
good. It's too big and bulky, yes, but you could smash the
wall with the phaser once you're doneforce an advantage. He's on silver chain
as well. Now Wolfers Silver Chaine. Of course it was the Golden Wall
one with the fringe. Apparently MichaelDawn became very attached to those. Really.

(21:48):
Yeah, I imagine that wearing asash or day gives one of a
big feeling of pride and importance. That's why I do rich you wear a
sash at the office, although smashinggolden one, I might get one for
a homely Yeah, like wolves becauselooking very serious. You can tell when
he has the right elbow up likethat, not resting on the rest.

(22:11):
But I'm not relaxing. No,I'm not relaxing, and I can be
ready to push off up out ofmy chair at any given give a command.
So you watch it. Enson inthe helm, will you watch out?
Because pressure in a heartbeat exactly alreadyhas you're gonna have to get never

(22:34):
mind, So they're gonna get someanswers from the dusk of year. Here's
Rico? Is it Rico? No? I just decided that we'd be calling
let's call him Rico Rico and Rita. There's a whole problem there, or
the kid, you know, I'dlike to call him Enrique Enrique because he
looks Mexican. No, just becauseI like the name. Okay, I

(22:56):
don't think he looks do you thinkhe looks? It? Looks it tell
in just because he's playing a mobsterin the classic possibly, so I think,
well, he's not a mobster,is he's the bellboy who's thirty five?
But yeah, it's a nice colorscheme. It's very well decorated.
It's a nice sort of the wholething has got Yeah, like you say,
that smoggy look and lays for aweekend, which is quite nice.

(23:22):
Yeah. I wouldn't mind it.Yeah, especially if they still let you
smoke, because that's kind of isn'tit. Well in this country? Yeah,
I believe you can still smoke inpubs and public places and some parts
of America? Can you really?Just not California? Oh good, good,
that'd be good. I can't imaginegoing into a bar in New York
and not being allowed to smoke, although it possibly is the case. Now

(23:45):
I think that's the case. Itseems to follow. They have all these
pictures on the wall of the Enterprise, and we don't know what they're all
for, do we? Well? The little ones like that was behind behind
him there. Yeah, I alwayswondered because the one in like Star Trek
two, for example, were todisplay battle damage. Yes they were.
They had a point yeah, andthey had little red flashing lights where you

(24:07):
were hit. And maybe we justnever come to that. Well no,
because they get hit an awful lot. But those pictures never change. No,
I suppose not be nice if theydid. Maybe it just cost too
much. Maybe that was the idea, but never really had enough cash to
do it. Well, they wereall individual pieces of glass, weren't they.
Yeah, they were where I thinkthey were. Actually just computer monitors

(24:32):
would cost a bit to the um. There were actually computer monitors and enterprise.
Yeah, why wouldn't they be whatin the show Enterprise? Yeah?
God, that must have caused anADR nightmare. No ADR for LCD monitors.
Yeah, well the computers must makea racquet behind there. Well,

(24:52):
you don't know where the computers are. That's true. Actually it could be
a KVM box. The computers couldconceivably be another room building. Yeah,
that's very true. And see moreset here. This is a very nice
hotel corridor. Do you reckon theyactually just used a hotel instead of a
sound. It's blatantly not a hotel, Do you reckon? It's so clearly

(25:15):
a sound stage. I think it'ssuch a convincing set that I believe it
could actually be a hotel. See, and this is a room. This,
this could be an actual hotel roomwith the camera rig inside. It's
not though it's twenty crew members onthe other side of it. Sounds so
a sound stage. Do you reckon? Yeah, there's a dead guy in
the bed. I know, skeleton. It's gonna be scary, Rich,

(25:37):
Well, he's not just the skeleton, is he is skeleton with hair and
skin? You might want to lookaway, Rich, This is quite the
stressing. Yeah. Bits of nastyskin, Yeah, that's it. A
body with the only half its skinis much more scary than either all skin
or no skin. Weird, thatisn't it? No? Did you find

(25:57):
that scary? Really? Was itas scary as the moth? The other
one? Well, I wouldn't makeit my desktop wallpaper if that's what you
mean, right, Okay, fairenough, But that would actually be quite
sick, now, wouldn't it.Yeah? That would Think about if you
came around to somebody's house and theyturned on two money to Reagan. On

(26:17):
both screens were pictures of rotting corpses. You'd think maybe I think twice about
coming back so that much. Yeah, definitely fifty two stars here you go,
places it between twenty thirty three andtwenty seventy nine a D. It
correlates with the debris we found thereyou go, Connel S. Richie,
Okay, twenty seventy nine a D. That's in a while. Yeah.

(26:41):
Does that mean that America as inthe nation of the United States of America
ceases to be in twenty seventy nineor does that that means that between less?
Yeah? Right, Okay, see, which is very strange because doesn't
that the Third World War within thestatut universe has already happened by now and

(27:06):
happening yeah by twenty whatever. Thereis no America as such because there's no
countries in general, or rather,do we keep the country god, because
there's a friends. Yeah, butI don't think there's any sovereignty. Laughter.
Is there's the world the government?Yeah, it's just a ragious regions

(27:26):
rather than borders. So there's alittle hiccup in your timeline if you want
to get really anal about it.I think a lot of people do data
reading super fast. Always wished Icould do that like Johnny five from Circuit.
Yeah, yeah, I always wishedI could do that. There was
something obsessing taking over the world withknowledge, see that. I always go

(27:48):
to that taking over the world, travel beyond the Earth Solar system. So
this is a little bit of trekhistory here. This is a bit of
a trek history lesson who did what, when and how and well what This
guy, the third man ever toattempt to lead the solar system probably did
it very slowly. Well, yeah, when is first contact certain? Again?

(28:12):
Is it twenty one? It's nowyou're asking questions. I'm not asking
you date questions now, aren't I? Yeah, not datas and we're on
a day, so I'm asking youa date question, but dates as in
relating to the timeline of star Trek, which is slightly less distressing. So
everything that data described seems to behappening in the hotel. So if you

(28:36):
always wanted to be a podcaster, yeah, that kind of question. What
do you do for fun of theweekends? Chord shows? More show just
continually recording shows? Oh, hewrote a letter in the book, didn't
he. This was quite sad that, you know, it was all on
his own. Must Whilst simultaneously distressingbecause we now know of the possible fate

(29:03):
of war for Riker and Data.Well, it's not as bad because no,
I never felt that peril. Inever felt peril for the main characters
in this show. I did whatit going to happen, because really their
demise was effectively just that they weregoing to have to live in an American
casino for the rest of their lives, which, to be honest, isn't
necessarily the worst way of spending therest of your time. Been a bit

(29:25):
worse for Data because Data would thenhave to spend a few centuries bobbing around
inside there. Well, would itbe like groundhog Day as well? Maybe
the book plays it reset itself.Yeah, when it gets that, Yeah,
that would be a bit annoy youjust you just find more people to
talk to and stuff, wouldn't you. And then I don't know, if

(29:47):
there was a woman on the awayseem it might be a bit easier to
bear. But there's no woman,Just war, just war. I think
after twenty I've had to make acommend decision, bend over, yeah,
away. How long do you reckonfor Riker and get it? I don't
want to know. I don't know. That's not a pleasant image in my
mind, because I'd give it threeyears, Lady PULASKI, here we go.

(30:11):
Let's talk about this from Oh she'sgone. She was the back of
her head for three seconds there.Yeah, that's how much the DP loved
her. She was just so severeand always look worried or smug. That's
smug. That's that's worried, worried, smug, smug. There you go,
within the movement of an eyebrow thatwas brilliant, just like you.

(30:33):
Yeah, not the eyebrow. Isee why you hate now because she reminds
you. No, that's it's notit at all. She's just she's I
think it is fair to say thatyou, Richard Smith, do have two
two facial expressions, the two majorones, two which are actually worried or
sarcastic. Do I not also havesmug? You also have smart? Give

(30:56):
me one more than Mark Wallberg?Yeah? Okay, I happy and sad?
Okay, okay, lost and foundI have. I do have the
disappointed look sometimes, which do it? Do it? Now? All?
You mean like they disappointed with me? Rather than general discipline arrive in the
post today sort of discipline that's that'sjust my general demeanor that one. Okay,

(31:21):
no more, but disappointed with others. I know you have that.
That's why I keep you around. It keeps me in check. At this
point, when more phones and thewoman says, the kitchen is open twenty
four hours. Yeah, you don'thave a sandwich, wouldn't you? Yeah,
you know, just before no cleardanger lads, there's out, But

(31:42):
so does anyone want a sandwich?I don't think we're going to miss the
exit. It's not Yeah, it'snot like you're going to get into trouble.
Cards out of range. Yeah,it's not going to watch what are
you doing? Oh god, he'shere. Good? Sorry I was.
We weren't in a sandwich? No, no, you know imagine that though,
Like they there's a series of thingsI'm now imagining. One involves them
actually breaking through the atmospheric and normallyand beaming down, finding warf and Richer

(32:08):
mid coitus, awful with data inthe corner, rocking and crying, why
can't I forget? He'd say,why can't I forget? Yeah? And
the other is that they're all sittingaround eating BLTs and them getting crumbs on
their suits and rikerud be a bitpissed trying to shaggy way around than non

(32:29):
existent women. Yeah, and Warfwould just be shaking his head. Data
would be one of the money fromthe casino by now, that's what they're
thinking of the little queries offered inconspicuously. We do have the wonderful bit where
it crushes the dice, that's rightat the end. That's that's maybe news.
And new pair of shoes, whichis awesome. Yeah, a lot

(32:52):
of extras now, well these areprobably the same extra as they had before.
Yeah. Well, also same actorsbefore. In fact, I bet
they shot this scene in the sameday as the other one. And the
woman with lace dress still no nip. You're not gonna get nip? No,
Well, I've been looking for itfor twenty years and I've still not
got it. So you've done thiswithin the confines of this episode. No,

(33:14):
because VHS didn't really have frame byframe monded it. It was just
always that static line would move overthe point you wanted to actually see if
you did that. Now, thisis weird. What time period is this
casino supposed to be? Because thatman when Data said how did you get
it? Who said I drove here. I've got a ninety one Caddy.

(33:35):
Now, there were no cadillacts ineighteen ninety one. No to assume that
this was in nineteen ninety one Caddy, in which case, even in nineteen
ninety one, why are these peopledressed in acting in this with it way?
And that's that's odds. So it'sactually a casino set in the future
at this point. Why the future, because this was shot in nineteen eighty

(33:58):
eight. Maybe we're wrong. Iswear that I said ninety one Caddy.
Maybe he said maybe it was fiftyone. Maybe I know that makes more
sense. I know it does,But maybe the person makes the subtitles got
it wrong. Maybe I'm gonna haveto watch this game when I get home.
I was tech checking an episode ofI'm a Celebrity to get Me out

(34:20):
of Ear the other day, andsomeone spelt burden to bear and they spelt
bear b ear on the subtitle forinaudible dialogue. Yeah, we sometimes wonder
what those people have to put upwith me. Yeah, yeah, sparkly
dressed there. That doesn't look likea ninety one dress, you see,

(34:43):
Wolf and Data sort of started lookingaround the gambling floor. Whatever Mickey d
Riker came down the left. So, yeah you are Mickey d Yeah,
are you coming to kill? There? You are? That's a smashing white
suit. He's of viously a gangster, clearly me. Look how dashing he
is. Yeah, that's a wonderfulcoat there. Yeah, and that tie

(35:07):
and shirt? Oh is this? No? This isn't the kid. No,
No, we've got had the oneyou've been told. Yeah, you
gotta stopped calling Rita. A bitof a pointless subplot of this, although
it does sort of serve to showthat there is a narrative actually enforced in
the confines of the casino US.But it's playing the book through soaper Card

(35:28):
and Troy and guess the ending.Isn't he the least threatening gangster you've ever
seen? No, he's Mickey deMan. Yeah, but he's so ship.
Look at him. He looks like, you know, you could really
smash his head. And if youcan't see him anymore, he's gone.
I'm looking at Fish and Deanna Troylooking puzzless, puzzled and pointless. She's

(35:49):
never pointless, mite, you takethat back, Well, even if the
point is simply that she's there andyou can see it there's still a point
to Deanna Troy. I found itvery weird. They're sat there listening like
like our listener, let's listen toa podcast. I suppose I don't know
something like that. It is.It's as if the Royalities podcasting and Date
and Diana and Piccard we're listening inbecause that is that art mirroring life,

(36:15):
may imitating life, possibly imitating art, us being a bunch of arrogant No,
Mike, if you can read itinto it, then it's there.
It's part of the art, andit's how you interpret it fair enough,
then fair enough. I can't disputethat because now my point, that's it
that senior star Trek was representative ofus here now future proofing, yes,

(36:36):
Oh no, no, this isthe I thought he came earlier. Oh
look at he shot him and there'sno bullet hole. That is such a
crapshot, isn't it. Well, you'd be a bit bit bit annoyed if
you shot someone and they didn't havea bullet hole. Is that not by
definition missing them? Possibly? I'dwant my money back if you actually did

(36:57):
shoot them and you know, theydrop down. Yeah, unless he had
a bulletproof VESTI, But no,what if Mickey Mickey D was actually quite
severe in this and like shut himin the back and then came up and
put one more in the brain justto make sure, and then wouldn't beg
No, it wouldn't know. Probablywouldn't have been broadcast on primetime television either.

(37:19):
Okay, so he left the door. He left. Oh we're all
confused about this now, aren't we, lads? How is that as confusing
as it appears for him to beup your idea? Didn't it shoot out
between the bellboy and Mickey D's Sowe've had that? So what next?
Piccard is such a speed reader.I mean, this is like a forty

(37:42):
five minute episode. I'd still beon chapter one. Yeah, I'd still
be on the credit. They'd say, what's going on? I'd be like,
Oh, the Royal is a casinoand hotel. I'd still be reading
the also available in this series list. I'd usually pay three. So someone's
going to buy the hotel? Now, who's going to buy it? Who

(38:04):
could possibly bueign investors? Foreign Frenchinvestors a point five United States twelve point
five million for a casino in nineteenninety one. This does not work.
Does it work in nineteen fifty one? I don't know. Eighteen fifty one,
No, it doesn't work anywhere. It's kind of maybe my ninety one

(38:27):
was just wrong. Maybe it wasa different number. I don't know.
You the Green Planet again, abit of a small planet. Early it
was like just a perspective. That'sjust perspective. We're a long way away,
right, but quite close to theEnterprise. That's abbitting it. I
see there's a long distance tun theEnterprise and the planet Days of course,
is about to play craps. Haveyou ever played craps? No, me
either. Not much of a cardplayer, to be honest, I only

(38:51):
recently learned how to play poker. It's a dice game, though, a
dice game, yeah right, Iunderstood that for the fact that he uses
a dice. Well, I saidcraps, I said, if you ever
play, And I'm not much ofa card player, yes, but I
have seen this episode. I knowwhat happens snake eyes. I remember we
used to have a game, aboard game called Gopher Broke, and the

(39:15):
idea, you know, in thegame of life, how the aim is
to accumulate money throughout the game.I reckon you can't see a bit of
niplate. You can't see nip.We had Gopher broke and the aim is
to lose all your money. Andthis always reminds me of that game with
the snake eyes. But because youwanted snake eyes, because then he lost,
right, that was the point ofthe game. You started. The

(39:35):
point was to lose. Yeah,go for broke. Yeah, you start
off with a ton of money, absolute pilot monopoly money. I had to
lose it. It was a goodgame, all right. So one of
those sort of reversal games. Yeah, very clever. People said it were
quite clever in the old times. For as good as it was. It
must have been a four o'clock inthe morning job. We'll doing it,

(39:55):
game of life. But backwards it'slike she got it, I've got it.
Do you ever played cheat? Oh? Yeah. The object of the
game was just to cheat, toput down cards and do you say what
they are? And people don't know? Yeah, yeah, I like that
game. Yeah, I did likethat game. And there was more than
one way of cheating. And thenI got caught actually cheating in the other

(40:17):
not cheating ways within the game, and I got bollocked for it, and
I was like, what's called cheat? For fuck's sake, I don't think
there's any such thing as actually cheatingin that game. Then well, some
people decided that there were. I'mnot going to name names. These cubes
are why cubes. That's the littlebit of dialogue they put into make him,

(40:38):
just to remind you use data.Oh it's a dataurism again. Why
are these cubes? Blah blah blahblah, Dice, you have a dictionary
in your fucking face, in hisface, in his face. That's a
good run. I Bety practiced thatfor ages. It's brilliant. He's very
good at the card stuff, isn'the. Yeah, there's one move in

(41:00):
particular. I remember where and oneof the game, one of the episodes,
when they're playing poker and Data doesthat thing with his hand and switches
cards around. And I tried practicingit for ages. I can never do
it. You've got to be BretMaverick to be able to do it.
Indeed, those people who can spinlemons in their hands in one hand,
like the guy in Labyrinth with theglass balls. Yeah, but not David

(41:22):
Bowie though, is it but lemons? Yeah? But lemons? And then
make cocktails out of them and lookimpressive to women. Wow. Yeah,
but no they get laid that night, but in the morning the woman reel
realizes, hang out, you're abarman. Yeah, and then it ends.
That's how they continue to get laidevery night. But you know the

(41:42):
benefits of long lasting living relationships istrue? I know love in my life
web no barman ever shall fun.But it's it's empty, Mike, It's
empty. It's all empty, likethe relationship between that blonde woman whose nipples
you can't see in the Texas manwho's thing around his neck we cannot name,
yes, and that man who who'sseen on many things but can't remember
what. There's so much in thisepisode. Look at that mustache, the

(42:07):
mustache behind Data. That is oneimbarressive. Actually Mario from Super Mario Brothers
doing a cameo. That was Mariodoing pawn. That's that guy. Look
at him. You can see him, Jeremy there in the background. He's
distracting me from data and what everythingthat Data is doing because of the sheer
size of his tash. Look atit. Oh no, he's not got,

(42:29):
he's not there. Morgan Freeman there, Morgan Freeman behind him. One
of the movie's so lovely shirt isdelightful, isn't it. What is the
name of that thing around his neck? I don't know. Someone emailed us
tell us what he was. Wedon't know. So why is this your
favorite episode? Again? Because it'sfun, Because it's fun. It's really

(42:52):
not serious. There's no real perilin this. There's no The young guy
gets shot in the back and fuckhim. He's not even real. Okay,
none of those people. There's onlythree real people in that shout there,
and that guy he's not real.Neither's Morgan Freeman. He's off to
tone. It doesn't even look anythinglike more than it does look quite like

(43:13):
Morgan Freeman. I think because he'sold and black. Yeah, I think
that's what's doing it for me.And the white hair and the white hair
that goes with old really, doesn'tit? Virch Not necessarily, not necessarily
at all. Look at Brad Pitt. Where's Brad Pitt? Oh? I
watched Confessions of Dangerous Mine the othernight. What did you think? I

(43:36):
love the book Pan's Cross I forgotthat Damon and Brad Pitton. Yeah,
she picks the other guy who's actuallya spy. That was really good.
Anyway, I tell you did enjoyit. I didn't do it. Excellent.
Let you buy me a drink.Oh, let me buy you a
drink. That's good. Can youdo this in a in a casino,

(43:57):
well one of these casinos, Imean you can. Does it work like
this that you can, in theorygo and win what the hotel is worth?
And then then just said, wellyou're going to give me a hotel?
Could I walk into the MGM?Grand? I think the idea is
that you offer something that is farlarger than the actual buy price. Were
you to do it like when BruceWayde buys the hotel and Batman, well,

(44:21):
you'd written a figure that was likesix times the work of the hotel,
so they couldn't refuse. Well, can you always refuse? That's what
I'm saying. I don't know.You can refuse. But if you're going
to refuse to buy out, it'ssix times with actual money that you want.
That's pretty stupid business sense, isn'tit. I love it when Walker,

(44:42):
when Riker walks into Piccard's office withthat sort of sorry. I want
you to follow that original phrase allthe way through. So when Walker rikes,
when Walker ranks into Piccard's ready roomand he has this. So he
does that, shaking the head androlling his eyes as if to just before
he said a word to Piccardi's saying, what a fucking day I've had.
Get Catalan, I'll tell you allabout this one. You're not going to

(45:06):
believe this and pick sort of la. He's got a chair that tilts back,
you know, t gray heart, two of them. But I'll have
a bit. I'll have a bitCardi and some scraps. So that was
barely really gave a commentary as search, but I enjoyed kind of jabbered over

(45:29):
this one. That's what they're for. Really. Okay, So now we
have the extra extra extra interesting endcredits, so we should probably wrap up
while yeah, nobody watches and creditsare on. This has been making so
an unusual episode, not you usualsort of thing. No, no,
this is the second one we've donethough. This was requested by Kaison on

(45:52):
the forum, so if you don'tlike it, blame him. I think
he requested it today as well.He did today. That's that is service.
No one else gets it, justyou, But there you go,
there you go. Paramount of Viacomcompany they owned, the world they do
or the world that Disney doesn't own. Thank you for listening. We have
other shows. If you want tohear our other shows. We've got movies.

(46:13):
You should see. It's our secondbirthday episode out at the moment.
Oh yes, we can watch usout with guest star on for the first
time ever and Tristan. Now,so there you go, a guy who
used to be on the show DefinitiveWord. I listened to that the other
night. Yeah, no, Ilistened it to it this morning because it
went out this morning. What doyou think. I thought it was awesome

(46:36):
good. I think they'll be emailthere probably will be. But I'd like
that though. That was that wasthe purpose of it. That's just what
the definitive word does. That iswhat we're talking about. Top ten cartoon
ladies or that's still the lowest pointof that show. It needs to be
said. It's an important point. We need to know how you feel about
lowist Griffin. See I wasn't onthat episode, were you not? That

(46:58):
was one of the four I've notbeen honest. We still to do it.
Well. I have to be like, oh, I know that,
I know my top one is Daphne, Daphne, Daphne Scooby Doo right,
I see Miniskirt absolutely said that witha bit too much conviction. She is
completely and ustily fossable. Anyway, neither here nor there. We have a
new show also, Men of theHouse, featuring myself and the delightful Craig

(47:22):
Bavan from movies you should see doingthings, arguing over stuff and albums you
should hear, of course, ofcourse. Where as we sit here the
most the eighth most popular music showon iTunes. Interesting. Nice for a
beginning show, that's not bad, just to climb straight to the top.
Yeah, there's five episodes so far. There's some more coming soon. Must

(47:45):
stress that's the UK iTunes before anyAmerican listeners. It's not you know,
No, the American listeners are nowherenear as hush and too as our UK
listeners. No, of course not. But the bulk we do know that,
the bulk of Make It So listenersare Americans. Yes they do,
so we do we do they are, yes, And English people can't talk

(48:07):
anyway you know this one. No, no, so I think that's everything.
Oh you can dig as some digboth of some podcast all that's very
much appreciated T shirts are still inthe store. Maybe I'm working on to
make it so long to go inthere as well. Maybe, and maybe
there's some other specially lovely things comingthere. So are we asking stuff for
contributions for T shirt ideas? Yes, always keep them coming. It doesn't

(48:30):
never stop that one. Then havea Comic Star Trek T shirt idea or
a particular one liner from this showthat you liked over the last year that
we've been doing it, maybe you'dlike to put that up for possibly possible
T shertification. I'm always open tohearing ideas. Yeah, suggestions of T
shirts for anything, really certification infact, general sort of things that people

(48:54):
are thinking, why don't they dothis? Well, because we don't know
that you want it yet, Sotell us and we'll look into it.
All sorts of stuff like that getsthe email. Make it so at simply
syndicated dot com that everything that's that'sall that's going to beat in a little
bit. Yeah, I'd say that'sdone. Okay, thank you for listening
everybody. We'll be back next week. Goodbye, goodbye.
