The show you're about to listen tois very old and comes with a warning.
When we recorded these shows over adecade ago, the world was a
different place and we were little morethan children. As a result of this,
you might hear a few things that, by today's standards, we judge
to be inappropriate or offensive. Pleasedon't be offended. In the years that
(00:24):
have passed since recording these shows,we've all grown up to be wonderful,
loving, liberal, freethinking, openminded individuals. If the US from over
a decade ago say something to upsetthe you of today, please understand that
we're as disgusted with ourselves as youare. But isn't this what life is
all about? Learning and growing. We all said and did things in our
(00:46):
younger days that make us cringe whenwe think about them. We just recorded
it and put it out on theinternet. With all that in mind,
I hope you enjoy the show.Oh and there's just one more thing.
Don't email the or try to entercompetitions. We don't have that email anymore
and all the competitions are over.We do have a Facebook group where you're

very welcome to discuss any aspects ofthe podcast. Please visit simply Syndicated dot
com for more information. Now establishingdata link accessing, Hello and welcome to
episode number forty eight of Make ItSo a Star Trek podcast. It's good
to be back. It's good tohave you back, Richard. It's better
than having Michael. Really did younot? Was it not? Well,
(01:30):
you know you've heard the episodes. All I'm going to say fair enough,
but he will be your replacement shouldyou need to disappear in the future.
Well, it's good to know thatI am, first of all, expendable.
You are, and you're likely replaceable. You are very easily replaceable.
Yeah, if not by Michael, then I will. I don't mind so
(01:53):
much. By Will, no,I can. I can live with that.
You can live with that. ButMichael, no, no, no,
no. So some of you mighthave noticed we've been around a year.
This is I only just noticed.Just notice you knew it was coming
up. I knew it was goingup, No idea it was coming up.
Oh yeah, I only I didn'tknow it was going to be October
(02:15):
today. Yeah, it just happened, didn't It just kind of crept up.
Lots of things have just crept upon me and hopefully fewer things will
creep up on me from now on. Yeah, apart from that thing behind
you, it'll be just like,oh my god, it's Christmas. Yes,
oh my god, I'm twenty ninenow. I don't want to be
(02:35):
twenty nine. I'm not going tobe want to be thirty even less.
Yeah. Okay, so well,at the moment, we day yeah,
not today, today, A fewdays ago, two days ago. It
was the twentieth birthday of Star Trekthe Next Generation, which we kind of
argue is more important than the firstbirthday of make it so it's not actually
(03:01):
in any way important. It's moreimportant than the birthday makers. So though,
how is it important? That's it'smore important. It's a landmark,
it's an anniversary. It is ananniversary, but it's not it's as important.
It's it's of importance as any otherdates in history. It's massively important.
It has affected our lives in amonumental way. It has. Yes,
(03:23):
So we're going to dedicate this episodeto twenty years of Next Gen,
and we're going to do that bysling shotting ourselves around the sun this very
moment, and we're going to seewhat it was like. I thought we
were going to do it with aneutrino beam. We're going to do it
with tuning slingshot around the sum We'regoing to substitute podcasting for the wireless,
(03:46):
and we're going to go back.It wasn't quite that bad twenty years ago.
Mike, you were there. Iwas there, but over you twenty
years ago? Five? So howwas eight? Was I eight? Yes?
I remember, I remember it veryclearly. Okay, well let's go
back and see what it was like. Hi, Rich, Hi Mike,
(04:08):
how you doing. I'm good?Thank you. Yeah. Well, this
is what we've been waiting for foreighteen years. Eighteen years. Star Trek
has returned to our screen, ourtelevision screen, our television screen. Yes,
where it's most convenient, where itis most ease, and we are
now confronted with this new Star Trek. The Next Generation. Yeah, gough
(04:29):
name. Do you really think it'sa name name? It's a bit cheese,
it's a bit wordy. A showthe next Generation. There was one
as well. I think it wassomething to do with people in the West,
right. I don't know what itwas, but there was there was
a thing called the Next Generation. So can it makes me think of that,
but not Star Trek. No,it's a bit obvious, isn't it
(04:53):
the next generation? Or we're doingsomething and it's like, what is it
seventy years in the future? Doyou know what got me? Next generation?
It's not even like the next generation. It's eighty years in the story
timeline, it's eighty years since thelast series is eighty years, roughly eighty
years. It's the next generation. It's the next next generation, which is
(05:15):
even wordier. Yeah, they couldn'tfit that in or Star Trek two generations
time. That wouldn't work either. No, that wouldn't work either. No.
Well, I'm quite looking forward toseeing it. And I mean all
we've had in the last twenty yearshas been four Star Trek films, four
movies. Four movies. I mean, don't be wrong. Three of them
were pretty good. I even likethat one with the worlds. At this
(05:39):
point it's quite nice. I mightlearn to hate it though later on.
I think it's probably a bit clicheand not a very good idea. It's
this sort of film I think willstill be good in a few years time,
in like twenty years time, youreckon, Yeah, all right,
I think in twenty years time, there's going to be people talking about Star
Trek four saying it's their favorite.I don't know about that. I think
there will be. I don't knowabout Richard, do you reckon people will
(06:01):
still be talking about Star Trek intwenty years. I don't think they will.
Well, we're still talking about thelast series and that was eighteen years
ago. That's true, But eighteenyears seems such a long time. It
is. A person could age alat in eighteen years, could eighteen years
worth? In fact? Probably so, having seen Encounter at far point,
Yeah, we've got the pilot, yeah, one last night. Generally,
(06:26):
what were your your BBC two,Yeah, six o'clock. But my views
of it all right, well,it seems a bit camp and I mean,
I know the original series was abit camp, but this seems a
bit camp and I can't quite getused to this new crew. It just
seems a bit wrong. I mean, Star Trek, about Spark, what's
(06:47):
going on? You sort of thinkthere'd be a Vulcan there, yeah,
somehow, But this this android characterthat they've got seems to be a little
bit of a replacement for that.He does a bit, but he's a
bit annoying. As well, isn'the He's kind of like he's certainly colder
than Spark was. Do you reckon? I think he's a bit over the
top and a bit a lot ofbig expressions and like sort of androidy movements,
(07:12):
and it's like you're trying to bea robot a bit too much,
aren't you? Just a little bit? They are sort of going to push
this. I get the feeling they'regoing to push this wants to be human
thing. I mean because we meethim and he's stud sort of trying to
whistle yeah, and he introduces himselfwith this whole it would be great to
be a human sort of speech afterthe kid falls in the water. Yeah
(07:32):
the kid kid was so shit.Yeah, like you. But I find
I can relate to him in aweird way. I don't know. It's
the sort of character that he's eithergonna he's either going to grow on you
and will you the story, orhe won't or he won't. I mean,
for example, this new doctor whocharacter, this new doctor who sust
(07:54):
doctor who. Yeah, he's kindof growing on me after a while.
You know, I didn't like himas at first. I really liked Peter
Davidson but I didn't like the guywho replaced Peter Davidson. But I liked
this Western McCord better than the guy. I don't know. I get the
feeling that this will be the endof Doctor Who Do You Reckon? I
don't think we'll see another Doctor whohave to stove West McCoy. No,
not for a long time anyway. No, And then they might have to
(08:16):
they'll just sort of reinvent it forwhenever they bring it out again. I
would imagine maybe maybe. But it'sgood. It's the BBC doing. They're
really cutting edge stuff. It's good. It is. It's good. So
what you weren't too comfortable with thenew crew? It seemed to me that
they have like it. There's asort of equivalent of every original series character
(08:37):
Mudner like who well, like Isay, the Android character was spark Yeah,
that sort of thing. I likewhat they've done with. You know,
Famously, we have a Horror onthe Bridge giving power to women,
but just by being there empowering towomen, a great image on the screen,
(08:58):
very iconic image, but always inthe years since, criticized for the
fact that she was basically just answeringthe phone. Yeah, and now they're
gone and taken this this big twist. Whether the only woman on the bridge
really is this chief of security.Well, we've got the counselor as well,
that one who was walking around inthe miniskirt. I mean, she
(09:20):
was on a new thing, isn'tit. Yeah, she was on the
bridge at the end of the episode. But I can't imagine them keeping her
there because really, I mean, what's the counselor going to do on the
bridge? I mean, I thinkthis is what you mean. I think
this is a character that's probably goingto get written out at some point.
Now that tashi Yah, they're goingto keep her because that's a really interesting
move. So I think she's gonnashe's gonna become totally totally She's going to
(09:43):
become a really big character, andwe're going to see a lot more of
her. Well, when you thinkof the marketing potential for having such a
character in that position, definitely, especially when they've got the cling on.
Yeah, this sort of mindless, brainless, sort of two dimensional, shallow
character just of being a third thugheaded cling on. Yeah, a hard
(10:03):
cling on is redundant next to thisstrong female security guard. I think she
could go a long way. Thisis a big character. This is a
very big but I do think thisTroy character is doomed because she's got this
romantic involvement with the Ryker guy.Is Ryker, isn't it the first Office?
The first officer? Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever his name was.
(10:26):
He's like got this relationship. Sothey're blatantly doing they're going to kill
her off probably in the next coupleof episodes. I can't recommend Wash your
main character. She didn't seem likea main character. I could see her
possibly be becoming one. Yeah,I could see that. Really well,
there's two ways you could go withthis sort of entanglement, this relationship between
(10:48):
her and the first officer. Doyou even killer off together? You could
kill her off. Yeah, theycould actually get back together, but then
that leads you into a possible sortof argument, episododes and all that,
and then you get the relationship episode. We don't want to turn Star Trek
into a fucking family drama. Itdoesn't want to be a family drama.
(11:09):
No, I just swore my mom'snot gonna be happy with me. You
could you could have them just notget together at all, that's true,
but that would be a bit boring. Well, you can have that and
then every so often you could justI don't know, like one episode of
season. Yeah, I mean,if it gets past this first season,
you could just have something crop up, just something that would remind us that
(11:31):
there was once a relationship. Itwould be nice if it goes for a
second season, wouldn't it be.I'd like to see it. I see
it just I mean, just beearly based on it on having it back.
Yeah, I'd like to see asecond season. Do you think that?
All right? The big thing isthe captain really this? I think
I've seen him on something. He'sBritish, isn't he. He's British.
(11:54):
He's called Patrick Stewart. He's beenacting for a long, long, long
long time. It's very serious Shakespeareanactor, although that gives the impression that
he's from Shakespearean times. Yeah,he acts in shakespeare places, right,
so he does a lot of shakespeareplays. That. He's a very serious
actor. He's good. I havea lot of faith in him. But
(12:16):
I mean the question is he's notreally quite the sex symbol that William Shannon
was. No. He also seemsa bit cold. He does seem very
harsh yeah, really harsh, likereally mean as well. I don't really
like him, and I don't thinkI'm going to warm to him either,
because he's so cold and British andhe's supposed to be French and yet he
sounds British. Why is it thatthis is just what they do, isn't
(12:41):
it? Is it in TV showsand in movies where somebody's supposed to be
foreign, not as in non American. Yeah, you get them to be
British. That's what you do.And so he's British. He's French,
really so as Pierce Broslin and RebinsonSteel went to be French as well.
Pierce Brosnon is allegedly Irish. Ishe allegedly Irish? Allegedly? I think
(13:05):
he is? Actually doesn't? No, he doesn't, does he? No?
He doesn't. Do you hear helost out to Bond? He did?
He did. He's going to kickhimself for that. No passing up
the chance to play James barn fuckingnow that Timothy Dalton guy got it,
didn't he? He did it.I'm looking forward to those. I get
the feeling he might make some ofthe best James Bond films. Maybe maybe,
(13:26):
maybe not the first one, butdefinitely his second film. It'd be
nice to see Tim if he Daltondo three or four. I reckon.
I think it would be if hecould just keep it going for a while,
because I don't like it when theychange. No. No, to
be honest, I don't think PierceBrosinon would have made a very good Bond.
I think he'd probably be cheesy anda bit shit. But Robinson Steel,
well that's perfect. Well that's good, isn't it. It's a nice
(13:46):
TV sort of thing. It is. Um where were we with with Star
Trek? I don't know? Um? Well, yeah, Picard? That
guy? Yeah, his name isJean Luke. Are you just you're getting
the stereotypical what's the French side ofthings? No? I just couldn't really
(14:07):
get on with the He's so differentand he doesn't seem to fit and he
just, I don't know, don'tlike him. I don't like him.
Didn't didn't do it for me.I get the feeling. We'll debate over
this one for years, which isbetter Kirk or Picard? Yeah? Right,
well I think it's got to haveto be Kirk every time, really,
isn't it. I mean, lookat him unless someone comes along who's
(14:31):
just better. Maybe, I don'tknow. What do you mean they're making
another Star Trek series, Well, what do you think like spin off Star
Trek. Well, I would haveto be this would have to be pretty
successful. But I mean it's anothertwenty years before we would see another show,
wouldn't it. I mean, ifwe were going by their clock,
I don't know. You could dosomething in the timeframe of the like something
(14:52):
happening somewhere else. Well, youknow how they're making the movies of original
series at the moment. Yeah, what if they made movies of next Gen
one day? One day? Ithink that would that'd be cool. But
you can have some weird sort ofcrossover movie you could do. Now that'd
be shit. How would they justifyit? I don't know. It would
be on very shaky ground. Ithink I think it would. It would
(15:13):
probably be the weakest film. Plus, let's face it, Kirk and crew
are starting to look a bit old. Well, I'm quite looking forward to
Startuck five. I think it's gonnabe good. Do you know Will Shatner
is directing it. I'm I don'tknow where I sound with that? Would
you reckon? I mean I knowhe's not a director, but I mean
(15:33):
London m woodn't do a bad job. That's true, that's very true.
But I've always thought William Shanter's avery how should I say this enthusiastic individual.
Well, well that's sort of thequality you need for director, isn't
it. I mean, someone someonewho's really going to push their ideas forward.
Yeah, but you don't think StarTrek five could end up being sort
(15:56):
of like an ode to Kirk. He'll do what Leonard Nimoy didn't, step
step to one side and like thecrew sort of take the story because I
mean, by the time they've gotanother movie made, he's he's too old
to be playing action Kirk. Youknow all this sort of like running around,
jumping, shooting people, all thatsort of thing. That's true.
(16:19):
He's beginning to look a bit silly. Well, I mean, maybe the
most people would just beat the oldman up and take his change. They'll
make him more of a thinking character, more of a you know, someone
who sort of sits back and makesstrategic maneuvers rather than like you know,
rough and tumble captain. So youthink that we've seen the end of Kirk's
sort of I don't know his swashbucklingdays as well. I think so.
(16:42):
I think we've got to admit whenhe was shouting, it's a bit past
it, really thought about stuff. No more riding on horseback into the battle.
No, none of that. No, nothing like that horseback? Where
did that come from? Just theiconic image of the man riding horse battle
that I'm thinking, you're never goingto hear. You're never going to see
a horse ride in Star Trek Richard. We've invented new things. Yes,
(17:04):
there's cars, are they're still horses. But we'll see her a naked before
we see horseback riding. Yeah yeah, mind you who want to these days?
Wow, we're being unnecessarily high. You know, they're not that old.
It's about as well. It's aboutas likely as a Her and Scossie
(17:25):
getting together. Yeah yeah, thatwould be ship, wouldn't it. I
think there's another two or three moviesleft in the crew you reckon? Yeah,
yeah, I think there is.Then maybe we'll make some is It
could be odd though, like havingboth crews running side by side. That
seems really weird. I mean it'slike, well, I don't know if
I can get used to that I'llhave to see how they do it.
It'll take some very clever writing.Yeah. So do you think this next
(17:48):
generation that could could go somewhere.I think it could go somewhere like well,
I don't know. I mean there'sstill a high cheese back to involved
in this. I mean, whatdid you actually think of the story of
encounter? I didn't like that Groppler'sall on character. I thought he was
a bit shit. And why didhe say good morning when he was leaving
the room? That really through me. Are people do that though? Do
they good morning as they're leaving? As you're leaving, I'm wishing you to
(18:11):
have a good morning. It seemedreally odd. It is a greeting,
isn't it. It should be agreeting. He says good morning groppolers on
as he leaves. It's really odd. Yeah, maybe that's just how they
do it in the twenty fourth century. Nearly said twenty third century. It's
the twenty fourth now, isn't itIt is? Yeah, wow, it
is. I've forgotten what we weretalking about it. I thought the special
(18:33):
effects were really good. Oh arethey good? What do you think of
the New Enterprise? The New Enterpriseis bloody cool kids on the ship.
Though, this could lead to allsorts of problems, and I get the
feeling, I don't know, you'regonna end up with a little They're leaving
themselves open for a lot of sentimentalepisodes. They are. You know,
(18:56):
we've got kids on the ship anda captain who clearly hates kids. This
is leading inevitably to a captain trappedwith children's sort of episode do you reckon?
He'd be, he'd be forced intoI don't know, sort of set
this up us. This is inevitablenow, maybe something like where the ship
just shuts down or something happens. He's trapped in a left trapped in a
(19:21):
lift, and he's got to lookafter these three kids. Well, how
would a Frenchman buy their spirits up? Would probably just sing Frei Jaka for
hours now. They wouldn't do anythingthat ship, would that silly? Silly.
I like all the new technology, and I like the new phases.
They look a bit bit bulky, they're a bit but they look less like
guns, which is I think thedirection they were trying to go in with
the new Phaser. I'd like aTV remote control in the style of Phaser
(19:48):
yeah, no, I can seethat. I mean, and it's not
a stretch. What about this Jeordieguy, he seems a bit Why is
he wearing a hair the hairband, hair band over his eyes? That seems
really weird. He's blind, isn'the? He has no eyes or he
has eyes, but not complete eyes. I think he's just blind. He's
just blind, right, and thathelps him to see That seems a bit
(20:11):
racist to me, because I mean, well, your iconic blind black people
over the years, your major blindpeople have all been black, really in
terms of in the public eye,Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles all that sort
of thing. Name a third Idon't know, Jordie LaForge there you go.
Seemed a bit obvious to make himblack, I don't know, or
(20:33):
make the black guy blind. Ithought it's nice. We have a nice
multi racial crew. Well, andalso multi species more than just a vulcan.
Now we've got an android as well. We've got an a half basis
half basis. Don't you think that'sa little spocky. It is a little
bit half See. This is whyI don't think they're going to put much
(20:57):
into that character. No, no, no, We've we've got the love
story, but that's it, andI think they'll have the good sense to
keep off that until they sort ofrun out of other ideas, and then
they'll probably have them get back togetheragain one day or something like that.
I don't know, but I don'tthink we're going to get the will she
won't she on off relationship. No, I'd like to see long. I'd
(21:18):
like to see them get rid ofthis French guy because I'm not I'm not
happy about him and replace him withRiker. That Rye could be the cat,
That Rye could be the captain becausehe's more like Kirk. I can
deal with that. And then ifthey're sort of, you know, if
they're sort of you know, doingthe whole original Star Trek thing again,
and then that you know, justa little bit of difference of the sub
(21:41):
cruise. But I don't think thiswhole completely different captain things going to work.
No, I don't think it's goingto work at all. Where you
can't have Kirk come back. No, but Rys an old man? No?
Do you think you just need anew young Well, they had McCoy
come back as an old old man. Wasn't the was a nice little nod
(22:02):
that was to the original series.Shame you can actually get Kirk. I
know there's a show, but McCoywill do I recomend to see any other
cast any more. The casts likecome back like that, because there's no
reason why they can't bring Spot back. He should still be alive. I
think we may see Spot at somepoint, but I think to bring any
others back would just be a littlestrange. It would be milking, just
(22:22):
be milking it. Yeah, andit's sort of, oh, it's another
one where somebody originally is back, and another one and before until all of
them have done it. Yeah.Yeah, Oh, they'll just do a
complete crossover episode or something like that. Yeah. Probably probably not that.
The high paying movie stars now exactlywhat they want to do, want to
(22:42):
located TV show. James Dohan, his career is going to take off any
day now, any day now,and it will be known for more than
just being a Yeah, he's gotto change. He wouldn't want to be
on Star Trek the Next Generation, would he? No? No, So
I think that sort of comes pleatsaround up. Yeah, Star Trek the
Next Generation. We'll be back nextweek after we've seen the second episode.
(23:07):
Yeah, which is the naked. Now that sounds a bit racy, doesn't
it. I hear this is aremake of an original series episode. Really,
yeah, that's a bit of acop hour more an update. It
is a bit, especially for yoursecond episode. Yeah, I mean,
right, four or five new onesperhaps, and then put her right,
I don't know, I think weshould get back to the future now,
because this is really I don't know, let's come back, okay, okay,
(23:33):
and we're back in the future. And we're back in the future.
Good God, How wrong we were? Oh? I don't know. Well,
you were right a lot more thanI was. I was completely wrong
anyway, Who could see that onecoming? Now? Tashi are lasting forever?
Yeah, I don't know. Andalthough I felt quite pleased that I
(23:56):
predicted them running out of storylines anddoing a Troy Raichers sort of thing,
eventually Yeah, that was good.It was good. Yeah, but yeah,
I was. I was pleased withthat. It was nice of a
bit of nostalgia for me. Yeah, listening to that, and to think
that when we did that, podcastinghadn't even been invented indeed, and no
one was listening. No, Andthe time travel aspect of this episode made
(24:18):
about as much sense as a timetravel aspect of any Star Trek episode,
since it makes sense you go aroundthe sun fast enough, you go into
time war. Yeah, but Iturned into you stayed the same age.
It made no sense, and yousounded like an adult for most of it.
I know this also made no sense. Oh well, oh well it
made more sense than Star Trek four. So this is Chewbacca. It makes
(24:42):
no sense. No, I'd liketo see that episode of South Park again.
I think right, that'd be good. So a year of Star Trek,
the year of talking about Star Trek, a year with us on this
adventure. So will will be backnext week Richard? Probably? Probably,
if we don't get canceled by thenetwork. This is why there's no canceling
(25:08):
though. No, as long aswe can be asked. There's no money
either. That's the downside. There'sa little bit. Yeah, you can
have a bit of my pop orsomething like that. Yeah, I've got
to be bottle myself. Well that'swhy I didn't offer. I thought I
might be one. Can I havesome of yours? This is bigger bottle
than Okay, you've got two balls. So thank you to all our fanatical
(25:30):
fans. Fanatical fans. Well,we will be doing a special episode for
episode fifty as well, and we'regoing to go through and and give people
praise where it's due, yeah, and everything, and just do a sort
of roundup of the of the pastyear and everything in the last fifty episodes,
sort of like a birthday episode witha bit more planning because we forgot
(25:52):
that we were one. Yeah, but it's more important. Like I said
about God the other shows. Now, do we have to you know,
taking to when did I start doingbollocks? I don't know that's your show?
Does every show have to have abirthday? Well, I think it's
nice. Definitive World will be inJanuary. Is that near my birthday?
(26:14):
Yeah? It was around that time. Yeah. Can we do something for
my birthday instead? Though, thatwould be nice. I'm going to do
something as well. Oh that's allright, I would I just want I'm
not going to sacrifice your birthday plansfor the birthday of the Definitive World,
because if we booked the stuff onthe same night, that would that would
be just awful. It would beYeah. But the benefit of podcasting,
I understand it is that you couldrecord it beforehand. Several days before,
(26:37):
