Speaker 1 (00:01):
What is up? Everybody? Welcome back. We'll come back today.
We have a special awesome metal core slash emo slash.
We're gonna just write great songs and kick ass and
we have a great guest with us. You guys, thank
you so much. We are so happy you're joining us
here on metal all right, what is up? What is up? People?
(00:49):
You guys see that we have a special guest in
the house. For the first time ever, we have our
dude Kevin from the Chord Progression podcast. Kevin, what is happening?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Hey, guys? How is it going?
Speaker 3 (01:00):
It's like, Anthey, I just got done talk with you
like what like an hour ago, doing it on the
flip side on my podcast. So this is like freaky
Friday in a great way. We're doing this on Thursday.
It might go into Friday for me.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Hell ya, hell ya? Yeah? Well what time? What's the
time difference here? Because for us it's like, what eight
forty five, it's almost nine o'clock over here.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
I'm two hours ahead of you.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, so it's almost eleven o'clock
right now this so this very well might go into Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
That's awesome. That's awesome. I do want to like, I
do want at some point to find the terrance to
make our way up to Wisconsin. I have family in Madison,
so I'd love to do a little a little thing
going on in Wisconsin. I've never been in Wisconsin once,
and I barely remember it. I remember like snow at night.
Oh shit, Like I remember like a five second memory,
and that I'm like, fuck, I wish you would have
done more. Anyways, Well, I mean, if you.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Come to what I'll say, if you come to Wisconsin,
you might have that five second memory again, but it
might not be because of snow, because of the amount
of beer you consume within a very quick time time.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
And I'm already anticipating I needed a beer today. You
are correct. I'm drinking Ace Pineapple Craft. I've never heard
of this company, but I'm excited. Let me taste it
real quick. Boo boo boop. All right, it tastes, uh,
tastes like Kevin. What is going on? So, Kevin, for
(02:15):
our listeners, please introduce yourself. Tell us what you're all about.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
So, for all the great mythology listeners, what's up, everybody?
My name is Kevin, HELLI said of the Chord Progression podcast.
I'll go through the podcast that Rolling Stone magazine described
as the one that initiates profound discussions with rock and
mell arts, allowing fans cover the creative workflow of their
fam musicians and understand the factors make the band succeed
or fall from fame. I've been doing this podcast for
(02:41):
about over six years now, interviewing many different artists from
across the rock and metal spectrum, some of the smallest
artists that have grown, some of the greatest artists that
have been out there right now, and including some of
my favorites like of course just got done recording one
with Anthem, Defy the Tyrants, had some other bands on
like for Mashes to New looking at my board right now.
I've also had guys like Miles Kennedy on the podcast.
(03:03):
I am hoping hoping to get at some point in
twenty twenty five to macref and Rise Against in the podcast.
Rise Against my favorite band of all time, and started
the whole podcast as a way to basically try and
get out of depression of figuring out that, you know,
after I got done with college life seemed like it
kind of sucked going into the working room and being
(03:24):
in a corporate and setting. Didn't really like that, so
tried starting something for myself and six years later we're
still going strong. So yeah, music is a huge care
in life and that's why we're all here.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
That's awesome. That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
Awesome man.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
So for a long time at AULT listeners and you know,
defy the tyrans followers because we have a lot of
followers that listen to the podcast as well. You guys
might recognize Kevin not just interviewing myself on our new
basis John, but he also interviewed to Find the Terrence
four years ago. And what I wanted to bring up
those funny is the last time he recorded us, our
good friend Alberto aka Boji and Sisobaji himself. He was
(03:58):
on there went. He was not there tonight, but Kevin
is still on another episode with him, so I think
it's funny ironic. He wasn't on the band episode, he's
on the metal episodes, so that's funny. There we go,
you guys, We're gonna go to introduce the Soul's real
quick after Kevin gave his awesome, awesome introduction. I am
your host, Anthony Spottisa and to the right of me
is my co host.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Hey, what's up, guys, This is Metal Hondro and in
front of me.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
So, guys, it's Rudy.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Wait wait, wait, you have to hype him up. He's
the star of the show. We know that you get uncomfortable,
and that's why it's good. Give him the introduction he
deserves because you always say, Baji. Let's give him the
introduction he deserves.
Speaker 6 (04:35):
Rudy slip Knot's fucking tenth member is nine or ten?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
I don't know which. Everyone quit the bank.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
You know you're mister You're mister ten right, ten times a.
Speaker 7 (04:48):
Day, ten times a day.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Kevin, do you know the story, the lore of metaology,
the canon, the nextas event that occurred a few months ago.
I don't know if you know too much about this,
but our good friend out brought the Kaji Baji himself,
the let's just one, the sexy one l Baghdad, the
major right here. Baji dropped a ball on us a
(05:12):
few months ago, in fact, several balls on us. When
he we we always joke with me, ask him, Hey, dude,
fucking Baji has all this hen tie because he does.
And we've still on the podcast, he has all this
hen time. By the way, Kevin, this is a narrated podcast,
so we do get a little raunchy. H we will
get to but we got all this hen tie in
this podcast from that's not on camera. And we always
say like Baji's always you know what he must you know,
(05:34):
we must relieve himself multiple times a day. So finally,
not not at a kickback or to get together, because
we're all good friends. We've been friends for almost over
twenty years now, most of us, we were like, we
never brought this up and this wasn't I got a
kickback or had like a backard barbecue ardsala, whatever. No,
we brought up up here on the podcast. We had
to record it in person live and we asked Baji Boji,
(05:55):
how many times a day do you spank the stink,
stroke the chicken, choke the chicken out? How many times
do you do that? And Boji dropped the number on
us that even my drummer, Uh Brandon, who's in the
other room, walked in here and said, what what what
Boji for?
Speaker 8 (06:13):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Can you let Kevin know how many times? I don't
even think this is necessary, but it's necessary for the
canon event. You said what I.
Speaker 7 (06:20):
Said about six to ten times.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Look at Kevin's reaction right now.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
You can ask mer, dude, six to ten times, how
do you have that quick of a reboot timer that
is astounding?
Speaker 9 (06:36):
Like, well, okay, it's not that I do it, you know,
ten times in a row, like I spread him out
throughout the h.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
We know, dude, we know you can't physically do it
over and over and over and over.
Speaker 9 (06:48):
I just you know, throughout the day, it's like ten times.
You know, my day's off. You know it's about you know,
ten times.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
And I think we were trying to ask him, like
what are like the times during the day, because I know,
like I wake up and I get ready and I'm
out the door on my way to work, and I'm out.
I come home and I chill for a little bit,
have dinner with my family, like go catch up with
my wife, put my son to bed, and then we'll
watch a movie and then like the last hour of
the day, you know that my husband and wife stuff
might happen. But I gotta know, like, Baji, how long
(07:15):
before work do you gotta wake up? Do you do
this during your breaks? You do this on your lunch.
Do you do the minue you walk home? Do you
do right before dinner? Do you do it after you
had supper. It's just like a hobbit thing second breakfast
and morning tea and ship.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Dude, he's got to be doing it in traffic to
hit that quota.
Speaker 9 (07:31):
Dude, I'm not gonna lie say that I haven't done that.
It's like sometimes, you know, it just happens. I gets
you urge, and I'm just like, you know, bust out,
bust the stranger.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Hi, dude, you know, don't haunts for that that I
have urges. So it was very important for you to,
for some reason or another to know that because we
do reference. Uh. We we tell him that he's the
heavyweight champion of the world.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
He's the heavy wank champion of the world.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
I love that the heavy heavy champion better heavy wink
champion in the world. Left he wears his look.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
It's gotta be all white, all white.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Yeah, and come, how do you say? How do you say?
Just in Spanish? Mechles and mechos little sperm for the
for the eyes. I feel like you need to do
that for Halloween anyways. So we're gonna get into it.
(08:38):
Real quick. I just want to catch up with the
week because it's been a week for all of us.
I know it's been a day for me. And we've
talked about this all day. Very first thing Kevin said,
my little ongoing, my little beef that started with Ronnie
rad Key and I don't want to go too much
into it, but that was the first thing Kevin said.
We linked up for the previous podcast, and h I
told Brandon he was laughing his ass off. I was like, oh, man,
(08:59):
so my day has been like dealing with messages and
hate comments and all kinds of stuff. How's your guys,
We've been anything interesting? You guys have done?
Speaker 10 (09:07):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (09:08):
Having me and Rudy have an announcement, Well, okay, we have.
We ripped together yesterday. You what we ripped together? Hand
in hand, man and man.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
You know what they mean?
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Just ripping packets.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
You're you're in on this too, ten times a day.
You're trying to build up.
Speaker 6 (09:25):
No, no, no, no, I'm talking about that. We're talking
about ripping some I got.
Speaker 9 (09:28):
I got him into Pokemon, He got me back into
Pokemon Pokemon cards, and I promised myself years ago I
would never do it again, and God damn it, Rudy.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
In the past twenty four hours.
Speaker 6 (09:38):
This guy's about two E TV's not even at fucking retail,
so no one was No.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Sixty five is not retail.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Okay, Yeah, he just wants to be the very best,
like no one ever wants.
Speaker 9 (09:50):
Damn right, Kevin, I can't damn right.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Are we talking about Pokemon? Are we talking about there
talking about We're talking about Pokemon hand in hand with
each other, man, Yeah, that's what we've been up to.
That's great. I love it. You know, my twelve year
old son is in a Pokemon too, so I could see,
you know, what the interests would be. That's wonderful. I
love it. This is a great podcast. Off to a
(10:15):
great start. We're talking about masturbation in the Pokemon and.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
Was ripping or rip whatever you guys are doing.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Man, but I want to rip with you. Yeah, I
hear you. I also want to shout out real quick.
I want to shut up my boy Eric Emery, the
vocalist for sky Harbor Andnro who works I won't say
where you work at or you know all that because
that's all classified information.
Speaker 11 (10:41):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Andro assisted me in sending my sky Harbor vinyl of
Sunshine Dusk, Sunshine Dust Uh to Los Angeles to have
Eric Emery sign and he obliged to sign it and
send it back. So I just want to shadow Eric.
That's awesome. I have it in a display in my
living room. I look at it and I say, that's beautiful.
I love it. Kevin, What's like the coolest thing somebody
(11:04):
in a big band has done for you, like somebody known?
What's like been one of the cool things somebody or
you've experienced with somebody.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Uh ooh, that's a good one.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
I'm trying to think of, like actually a good one
I could go off of, but.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
I'll go with this.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
So this was like twenty nineteen. I was just trying
to promote them, like what I was doing on Instagram.
I end up talking to someone she was a huge
fan of Disturbed. Oh and Disturbed was my favorite band
when I was in middle school, and I always pissed off,
you know, every single teacher I was in contact with middle
school because I went to a Catholic school. Oh and
this is Disturbed, like two thousand and eight indestructible style. Yeah,
(11:43):
they thought, you know, the guy in the song inside
the Fire was like the worst thing in the world.
But I ended up connecting with this person and we
started talking Disturbed. I tried to help her get to
like the release show for their Evolution album, but it
just didn't work out. And then late in twenty nineteen,
Disturb played a headline show here in Milwaukee, and she
(12:06):
helped me get tickets to the show. On the floor,
I'm like, oh, this is great. She always does vip
in that kind of stuff. So she got some stuff
signed and said, hey, I've got an extra thing that
I'd be willing to give you if you want.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I'm like, yeah, sure, I don't know what it is.
I go meet her.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
She gives me this signed by all the band members
picture vinyl from their Believe album. The second one has
the whole like Disturbed logo on there too. She also
sent me a like one of the first thing they
played in Israel, they made like Israel flags and they
put the logo over the Star of David. So I
have that hanging up in the room that I'm in
(12:42):
as well.
Speaker 5 (12:43):
That's soome.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Yeah, that's probably the coolest stuff actually that anything like
a band either has done or someone has helped me with.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
And that was really early on too, which is crazy.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
That's fucking cool.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Do you guys have a story. Do you guys have anything?
Have you? You're very shy, Devin Townsend.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
You guys were there when I met Devin Townsend at
we had now nom right, Yeah yeah, and uh yeah,
I'm very shy. So approaching him was like, oh my god.
But immediately talking to him, he was super fucking down
to earth, and uh, you know, I talked to him
a little bit about like, you know, you know, you
inspired me for blah blah blah and like my own
(13:23):
and he was like, oh, you know, best of luck
to your you know, your music endeavor and stuff, and
I was like, hey, thanks man, and so yeah, that's
that's probably my moment.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Got it? No, no Dave mistake moments for you.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
I was in line and they cut us off, like
one person ahead of me and they cut the line off.
But at least I got to see him sign a
kill them all.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
You got to see him someone else's kill them all.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
Yeah, they gave him kill him all. He looked at
him like really like that kind of look signed it anyway,
you know, classic Dave. You know he's gonna do it anyway,
but he's going to give you ship. So I got
to witness that.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
I was like, fuck, that's a man of the fan.
That is somebody who appreciates his success.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
And yeah, I was like, you know he's gonna sign it.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yeah, wonderful, Rudy anything.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
Dude, that's really hard.
Speaker 6 (14:10):
What Like, I have two top moments. When I met
the clown ship before. You know, that was my first
show ever and I got to meet the clown and like,
that was amazing. But I think I had more fun
when I met Dave Brocky outside of House of Blues
without his costume and everything.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
That's sick, dude.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
I was.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
I was drinking a fucking Budweiser in a fucking paper
bag and he asked for a cigarette. Gave him a cigarette,
and he actually took a swig from my fucking beer
and like, I was like, do your date, Brocky.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
He's like, yeah, but keep it doing.
Speaker 6 (14:42):
Don't tell anybody, and he was like he was just
right there standing normally, dude, nobody knew who he you know,
not everybody knew, but a couple of people did.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
So sharing a beer with him was fucking awesome.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
If you say, baby, metal dude, I'm gonna.
Speaker 8 (15:00):
Wish.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
I mean, damn no.
Speaker 11 (15:02):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (15:03):
I met the singer from a Pierce of l at
my job. I don't know where the hell he was going.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
But we live in San Diego. Everybody knows the guys
in Piersville.
Speaker 7 (15:12):
Yeah, well I've been. I mean, I've never seen them,
So does count?
Speaker 1 (15:16):
That doesn't count? Wait does it doesn't count they're from me?
Or do we practiced in the same space.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
That's like you're saying, Okay, if you've met the guys
from pod you wouldn't.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
He wouldn't say that. I mean twenty years ago, last weekend.
We have people that are in fucking lou Rote Tech
for no, okay, because we know them. Sorry, but I
don't know never mind. I mean, that's just about it.
Like I just met him.
Speaker 9 (15:43):
I just saw I saw him at my job and
I recommend him, like, oh it's that guy. And then
he's like, oh, hey, what's uppen? We chit chatted and
boom it was on a plane going somewhere.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
I don't know where the you want to be, Ronnie.
Speaker 9 (15:54):
Ratkey, I don't He doesn't know what I know what happened.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
You barely know what happened. Okay, you like, okay, so
just let you these two are big falling in Reverse fans.
You motherfucker. I'm outside ex Kevin, like during the break
when we finished your podcast, when get ready to do
this one, We're outside in the back. I'm smoking a cigarette. We're,
you know, getting ready to come in here. We waiting
for body to finish cleaning up the toilet, and uh,
(16:24):
we're fucking Rudy out of nowhere. He's like, hey man,
you gotta check out the song and starts playing fucking
Falling in Reverse and I'm like this fresh man and
then our bayflayer. Tony's like, yeah, it's not that bad.
Like he's like, I'm gonna follow him. You motherfuckers. Whose
team are we on here? Who's you know what? Don't
answer that. Don't that's that because we got an episode
to get into and I don't want to get into
any fights because you guys know me, well, you never know,
(16:49):
you never you know. If I could, I would, Misty,
ID that makes it better. Let's go, Tony, I'll take
you one sound You'll never see me coming.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Coming?
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Did somebody say coming?
Speaker 7 (17:18):
Who's coming?
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Not you? And not? Right now? All right?
Speaker 4 (17:23):
Guys.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
So we're gonna get into this episode. We're gonna be
talking about We Came as Romans. This was a pick
given to us by Kevin himself, and he also curated
the playlist, sent me the songs, and I went ahead
and made a playlist of him. So we're gonna get
into We're to start at the top. We're gonna read
a quick excerpt from the band's Wikipedia bio to give
our listeners context as to the artist we're talking about today.
We Came as Romans. It's an American metal core band
(17:44):
from Troy, Michigan. Formed in five The band has gone
through one name change and multiple lineup changes, and signed
to Sharp Tone Records in twenty sixteen, after having been
on roster of Equal Vision Records since two thousand and nine.
They have released six studio albums, to Plan a Seed
in two thousand and nine, Understanding What We've Grown to
Be twenty eleven, Tracing Back Roots twenty thirteen, We Came
As Romans self titled twenty fifteen, Cole Like War twenty seventeen,
(18:07):
and Dark Bloom twenty twenty two, and two We Peas
and Oh Wait titled Demonstrations and dreams. All right, we're
gonna get into introductions for we came as Romans, uh.
I just want to let our listeners know, Like I
don't have too much of a history, but I know
we're gonna go give Kevin the floor and let him
talk about it. I feel that for us, me and Hondro.
If it's not revocation, it's not good. Am I right?
Speaker 5 (18:28):
Yeah, I met it. I'm with you and you said
earlier that you didn't you know, you're coming in like raw,
So I'm coming in with you raw, coming in raw.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Yeah. I just wanted to let you know, don't get stop.
We just stop.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
I just mad stop metaphor, dude.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Don't don't don't say things like that. See his smile now,
look at the whites in his eyes. All right, Kevin,
tell us, how were you introduced to we Came as Romans?
Speaker 3 (18:53):
So I was introduced to we Came as Romans honestly,
probably in high school because I heard the name of
the band we came as from friends that were into
it at the time. Though I didn't like really anything
with unclean singing. I just thought, ah, cool band name,
but it really wasn't ever my thing until I started
the precursor what was the Core Progression podcast back in
(19:14):
August of twenty eighteen, and then the first thing I
see if we came as Romans is the Unfortunate news
back in August of twenty eighteen of the passing of
their clean vocalist Kyle Pavone due to an overdose, and
it was just like something like, Dang, I kind of
wish I got a little bit more into that band,
and I kept thinking, like, this is one of the
coolest band names I think I've ever heard in my
(19:35):
entire life, and then thinking about the movie The Dirt
of course, the Motley cru biopic, when they had Mick
Mar's character saying like, you know, ten times out of ten,
shitty band name, shitty band. I'm like, this is one
of the coolest band names ever. I got to get
into this at some point. Just check it out. I
kept trying to give it a chance, and nothing really
hit for me until the Pandemic of twenty twenty, when
(19:55):
I was listening to the song Above my Head by
Polaris and I was looking through YouTube comments and someone said, Hey,
that guitar tone in the chorus sounds similar to the
guitar tone the chorus of Wasted Age by We Came
as Romans. Immediately I go and listen to the song,
and I'm like, holy shit, this is awesome. So I
start going down the rab hole. Of course, live shows
(20:17):
come back. I get to go see them live a
couple of times in twenty twenty one, and it just
never really fully clicked. I'm like, I don't think I'll
ever get into this band. Twenty twenty two, I'm down
in Daytona, Florida for Welcome to Rockville, and it's day two.
It is hot as hell, it is humid. I'm from Wisconsin.
I'm pale as hell. The heat and humidity are kicking
my ass left and right, and I swear I almost passed
(20:39):
out due to heat stroke like four or five times
during that day. Now it's Florida in May. Storms are
rolling through, so you never know what's gonna happen. And
right before We Came As Romans takes the stage, it
instantly cooled by like fifteen degrees and rain starts falling
and there's thunderstorms coming through. So they're gonna throntload all
their heavy songs and get this in as quickly as possible.
(21:02):
Before the Thunderstorms canceled the rest of their set. That
six song set was the most sloshiest, messiest, most incredible
set I've ever been a part of. To see witness
and be in the pit and I'm like, this is
easy one of my favorite bands.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
After that moment, that is awesome.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Hell yeah, yeah, it's interesting. So this would be would
you consider this to be like a and I know,
like not new new, but like a newer band that
you introduced, because I always assume like five years is
pretty recent as far as like I when I get
into the new bands, would you consider that this like
a recent band you got into?
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Definitely anything I would say that I started really getting
into once I started the whole podcasting, so around like
late twenty eighteen early twenty nineteen. I'd consider newer probably
the really like classic ones. I could say like I've
been into for a long time, kind of disturbed, but
I'm not really using a certainment where bands like Hollywood
and Debt and of course Rise again.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Gotcha? Gotcha? Cool? Cool? All right, we are going to
get into everyone else. Uh handro Do you have a
quick little story about your introduction to we kim as Romans?
Speaker 5 (22:02):
I know I mean, I'm actually going in raw as
mentioned before, Baji.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Sorry, but ya, So have you heard of the band?
Speaker 5 (22:11):
I've heard of the name.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Yeah. When did you hear the name?
Speaker 5 (22:14):
Probably around mid you know, after twenty ten, I don't know,
at some point.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
Okay, yeah, I'll just I guess I'll do mine real quick.
I've heard the name around a lot. But they were
a band, especially when all the new metal not new
metal bands, I'm sorry, all those like late two thousands
metal core bands started to get up. They started to
come up a little bit more and their names kind
of got jumbled, and I remember, like I think I've
read an article on them and Revolver magazine where I
(22:40):
was introduced to most of my favorite bands in the
two thousands and checked them out. It didn't really hit me,
and I really haven't checked them out since. So this
is gonna be a first for me to check out
these songs, and I'm really excited. Uh Rudy, When did
you hear about Wi kim as Romans?
Speaker 6 (22:55):
Probably like late two thousand and nine or something. I'm
pretty sure I've seen them like at least once. It
was either like a data remember show or a parkway drive.
I can't remember which one, but I know I've definitely
seen them. I never really kept up with them though,
but I know who they are. You know, got when
they pop.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Up, right Baiji.
Speaker 9 (23:18):
So yeah, I think about the same time two thousand
and nine, twenty ten, like right after high school. You know,
all the metal core bands were coming out. Medical was
you know, pretty popular at that time. So yeah, their
name came around. And then I heard them cover a
song on uh pop goes Rap metal or something like that.
(23:41):
I think it was a they'd covered a I Knew
you were Trouble okay, And at first I was like, oh,
I like this cover, and then I saw who it was, Like,
oh okay, and I know of these guys, but like,
aside from their cover, like, I haven't really heard their music.
Speaker 7 (23:58):
As as much.
Speaker 9 (24:00):
I know, I've heard a couple songs, but there they
didn't really attract me or hit me as much, you know.
So well, you know, I'm ready to give this a shot, you.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Know, all right? All right? So but you like him?
I like him? You like him?
Speaker 7 (24:13):
Yeah? I like him?
Speaker 5 (24:14):
Like them?
Speaker 1 (24:15):
I like him? Really? How does he do it?
Speaker 7 (24:17):
I like it?
Speaker 1 (24:17):
I like it, I like it wonderful. I love it
all right, So we're gonna get into the playlist. Are
into the play this segment where we listened to a
play this created by whoever decided to pick in for
this episode. It was our good friend Kevin picked six
songs I believe, and uh yeah, six songs. So this
first one we're gonna listen to the first maybe minute
minute and a half and off our thoughts. This one
is off of the album to Plan a Seed from
(24:39):
two thousand and nine, and this is two Plan a Seed.
(25:03):
That's probably more so. Yeah, that's two thousands right there, Yeah,
(25:32):
definitely two thousands. Metal cores, summer.
Speaker 11 (25:48):
Sum hm.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
I like that. Electronic Yeah yeah, yeah, electronics. So people
get their cell phones. Time a start as to have
(26:15):
sky harbor.
Speaker 5 (26:15):
I want to pick This is age twelve.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
All right, So that was two Plan of Seed by
Wee came as Romans boys. What are our thoughts on
two Planet of Seed? Actually, before we start with that, Kevin,
why did you pick two Plant Seed to be on
this playlist?
Speaker 3 (26:40):
I picked a Plan of Seed to be on this
playlist because of course it is the titterer song off
of their first album. Plus this was the song that
really got the band notoriety in that late two thousands
early twenty ten warped to her metal core scene. On
top of that, after twenty twenty one, the band decided
to retire all of the songs onto Plant to Seed because,
(27:03):
of course, passing to kal Pavone, they wanted to make
sure those songs kind of stayed in the capsule. But
on their last tour at the end of twenty twenty three,
if they went on and headlined, they played a secret song,
and it was to Plant a Seed because they just
couldn't help themselves. They had to get that out there.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
Gotcha, gotcha. This song is like the pit maker for
all the hot topic kids like I'm over there, like
this is nostalgic for me. I'm like, oh shit, I
remember like the Warp tour pits and like the Osfest
pits where all the old heads hated like the new kids.
And that's what this kind of takes me back to.
You guys know me. I'm a sucker for like very
poppy choruses, especially like when they mix them together. One
(27:40):
of my first FIGUREE bands, Colse, which engage. So this
is more like a modern kind of like take on
that I think they're great. Definitely sounds like two thousand
and nine for sure, one hundred percent of the go
nine for sure.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
It takes me back. Yeah, and then like the electronics
and stuff like that, Like I feel like that's that's
aged very well. Yeah, it's very welcoming.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Gotcha, Rooney.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
I love it, dude, you love it.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
You like this?
Speaker 6 (28:06):
Yeah, I like this kind of ship vocals. But spirit Box, No,
it doesn't, it doesn't.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
Ginger No, this yeah, dude, motherfucker.
Speaker 6 (28:16):
It has emotion in it, dude, Like I love that,
Like I feel it. I feel something when he's singing.
Speaker 7 (28:22):
Dude, you feel it.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
I feel it.
Speaker 1 (28:24):
Sometimes your guys' opinions astound bab because I have heard
it sounds too poppy on this podcast.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
This is this is super poppy. But I like it
in this, in this, in this, in this style, dude,
it works for me.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Beautiful. Well, that makes me happy, It gets me moving.
I still can't figure out what kind of metal you
like then, because I'm I'm trying to get it like
figured out. I'm trying to figure out where where's the
train going?
Speaker 4 (28:50):
And I like I like.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
A little bit of you know, I like fast, emotional, loud, ship.
That's the best way can I describe it? And I
like a good gimmick. What's the This is a gimmick,
a very reoccurring thing.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Yeah yeah, okay, uh Baji thoughts on we came as romance.
Uh Plane of Seed?
Speaker 7 (29:14):
Good song, fucking like it.
Speaker 9 (29:17):
Just it gives me that nostalgia like you know, early
twenty ten or like the twenty tens where like metal
core was like I believe that at its peak and
it's just like it.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
Yeah, I would agree, Yeah, it just you know, nostalgia.
Speaker 7 (29:30):
Just like listen to it. I'm just like if it
gives me that that feeling, and I'm like, you know what,
there's a pretty good song.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
You're trying to avoid sing I like it.
Speaker 7 (29:38):
I'm trying trying to avoid He's doing good, He's doing good.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
Everybody. How does Paci do it? One? Two three? I
like it beautiful? I love it all right. So that
was two Plane of Seed. We're gonna fast forward to
twenty thirteen off the band's album Tracing Back Roots. This
is the first song and the title of the album,
Tracing Back Roots.
Speaker 8 (30:00):
Job the Bad Side Mother.
Speaker 11 (30:07):
My Mind.
Speaker 10 (30:10):
All the way, Oh shit, Oh I've got by.
Speaker 12 (30:22):
Okay, okay, okay, yeah, okay, okay.
Speaker 13 (30:40):
That's cool.
Speaker 14 (30:42):
That's a sick beat anyway, I'm like, hey, why.
Speaker 8 (30:58):
Why my fault?
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Oh my god, this sounds sick. That sounds so cool.
Oh open, I would say, where'd it go?
Speaker 10 (31:27):
Where did it go?
Speaker 1 (31:30):
The sick ambient section? All right, we're gonna stop it
right there? I was vibing Tracing back Roots fire very
different from the last one, from the first song on
the playlist, Uh, angrier, heavier, in my opinion, heavier, a
little more hardcore. Yeah, I'm over here vibing like when
did I not hear this like this? I think like
(31:50):
I probably heard it. We came as romans the track before,
more of that kind of style, and like I wasn't
in that time, I wasn't too big. I probably would
have felt like it was a little too poppy. This
is like I could blast this in the car the
way home tonight, Like this is fucking sick. Kevin, why
did you pick Tracing back threevious?
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Well compared to when we saw it to plan a seat,
Especially for the majority of that song, Tracing Back Roots,
we don't really see a lot of the overproduction, bhind,
we don't see a lot of the sins behind it,
some of the more orchestral pieces that really bring Ford
that like late two thousand and nine early twenty ten style.
Beyond that, the more aggressive tone that it takes it
shows more of that metal course out the band can
(32:29):
really go for. It shows Dave Stevens as the unclean
vocalist really showing a lot more aggression. The beauty in
that song, though, actually comes in the back half of
it that you didn't get to. That I'll leave us
a little treat because that's when the song takes out
a completely different light when Kyle Pabone steps in with
clean vocals, So you get like a whole different section
of the song in two different pieces. But when they
(32:50):
played that part that you guys were hearing and listening to,
my God, does it just make you want to go
in the middle of it and smash them on a piece.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Yeah, it's a jumpy part. In fact, we' right here
in the singing part right now, just to part like
you like this part, Rudy, dude, I'm gonna give you context. Kevin,
Rudy and the hands were are there are residents elitists,
no more so this one than you.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
I feel like, I'm pretty open.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
You're more bigot it. I don't like women's singing, yes, anyways,
but that's not as bad as the gatekeeper over here.
If it's not ravacation megadath, fuck it.
Speaker 5 (33:33):
It ain't fast first and ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Actually want to hear Honda's thoughts, dude.
Speaker 5 (33:40):
Honestly, this ship took me by surprise. It was fucking heavy.
The fact that it has that the song changes into
like a different kind of section, like more like heavenly
kind of thing. Like, I think that's pretty sick, and
that just speaks to the like writing, you know, to
be able to like show like fucking evil slide and
(34:00):
nbia like angelic at the end, seamless, seamless transition. So yeah, yeah,
I think it's pretty sick.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
Man. Cool, Cool, it's not too poppy for you now
you would listen to this? Yeah, I love it. I
love how we're now changing your gatekeeping ways. We're changing,
We're changing you.
Speaker 5 (34:20):
Guys, are exposing.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
Me, We're exposing you, We're bringing to the good side.
There's more than black metal and revocation. There is more.
I know now you know we're gonna keep going rudy.
Speaker 6 (34:32):
I like it, man, I like how you know, it
started off heaviest ship and then how it transitions over
to the very melodic you know sound.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Uh baji.
Speaker 9 (34:45):
I enjoyed the freaking like those breakdown riffs that you know,
like most metal core bands you know, are known for,
you know, like those breakdown these verses that they're known for,
Like I enjoy a ship like that. Yeah, yeah, And
it's just like hearing them like yep, and it's.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Cool and what I think is cool about. So it's
like a generic breakdown like all the bands have it.
But it's like in hip hop right, like when like
they can have like whatever cool be, but once they
throw that like generics ato weight, you're like when your
car is rumbling, Yeah, it's engaging. It's like hell yeah yeah,
like generic breakdowns. The metal cores like that. It's like,
oh fun are we going? I don't care if the
(35:24):
bands play the same fucking breakdown? Hell you into my
veins baby?
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (35:32):
Yeah, fucking good good song.
Speaker 7 (35:35):
And the and the Clean you know what's the second
second half song?
Speaker 1 (35:39):
Yeah, I liked it was really good. The clean vocals
are really good because there's bands who do that, like
The Cleans, the Whales, but This sounds very natural, where
I think some bands like I love Attack Attack, I
think Attack Attack, it's very forced. Yeah, like but it's
like it sounds good. They get away with it. It
sounds forced. This sounds very natural to the band sound.
Can you want to talk a little bit about about that.
(35:59):
The more the poppier aspect of the vocals for a
weeken as Romans, Well.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
Yeah, you see, when you get the more poppiler aspect
of the vocals, that's really driven off of the cleans
from Kyle Pavone. And as you can probably tell, especially
after listening to Plant the Seed and then of course
the second half of Tracing Back Roots, you can really
see why they really were a fixture on those pop
ghost punk albums because they're will to turn a lot
of those electronic pieces that you saw into plants to
seed to really fit the pop stylings. But then Kyle
(36:25):
Pavone's voice just are really is able to draw that
out with a lot of different times, especially in those
like two thousands and like tens metal core bands, you
would get vocalists that didn't have that strong of a
contrast between a vocal that was clean that could really
go in that poppier style or really go in this more.
I would say, you know, mainstream kind of feel that
(36:46):
contrast against an unclean vocal like what Dave Stevens has.
So that is just one of the major hallmarks that
we came as romans had, especially all the way up
through Cold like one.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Got it, cut it, Yeah, great, pick great pick. I
love that. We're going to have you with this one.
There's still like the little there's the surprises and I
love it. I love it. I'm so formerly digging this playlist.
We're gonna go into the next song on the playlist.
This one's called Hope and it's off the same album
Tracing Back Roots from twenty thirteen. Do you hope? This
is good? Basji? Do do you hope?
Speaker 12 (37:15):
Not to.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
Trace back your Roots tonight and just go to bed
after the podcast?
Speaker 7 (37:20):
I need to trace my roots, bro every night.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
God damn it, dude, son of a bitch. All right,
somebody's phone going off, somebody's phone going off. No, No,
we're all we're professionals here. Let's not do that, all right.
So this one is called Hope. This one is off
with Tracing Back Roots twenty thirteen. God Lincoln Park lives.
Speaker 11 (37:48):
Dude, sucktop.
Speaker 7 (38:14):
Hell yeah, stop.
Speaker 13 (38:22):
Stop, it's a garring chorus.
Speaker 1 (39:11):
Now, I just want to put it out there. That
was the first time we've heard that. That's why I
love pop hooks, because you can hear it once and
you got it.
Speaker 5 (39:18):
I know what I'm like.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
Hell yeah, first time I heard. I love it. Kevin,
talk talk to us for a minute. What made you
want to put a Hope on the playlist?
Speaker 3 (39:31):
When it comes to Hope, I think that's like the
quintessential We Came as Romans song when Kyle Pavone was
in the band, because it takes all the elements that
we came as Romans has and really puts it together.
You heard the piano in there, you heard some more
of the electronic pieces in there. You heard the poppier hook,
especially on the chorus. You heard the clean vocals contrasting
against Dave Steven's Uncleans. You saw a lot of that
(39:54):
just come out in a one hell of a mixture,
which is why it's like anytime you see we Came
as Romans, you know this song is going to be played.
You know it's gonna hit, and even without Kalpavone here
with us, anymore, especially when they play it live. You know,
Dave can sink at the rest of the band will
get behind it, so it sounds a lot more powerful
when you get that like full on just everybody with
(40:14):
those gang vocals all over the place. It just is
that song that is the draw to week. Came as
rummans for so many people, So that's why I.
Speaker 5 (40:22):
Was picked for this.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
That's awesome. That's awesome. I'm a big sucker for like
piano synse, everything like that and like heavy ass breakdowns
and big giant courses. In fact, defy we started doing
that on our new album. Yeah, just because you know,
I'm such a big sucker for it. The way this
spend does it is very seamless. I mean, I'm not
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not hearing such a different
as far as like if you were to tell me,
(40:44):
like does this sound new or fresh? Like have you
heard bands like this? Yeah, I've heard bands like this before,
but I think they're so good at the craft. Like
to me, I don't care if a band is playing
what everyone else is doing in the scene, as long
as they're doing it to the best of ability, and
it's the craft it's how they build the songs, how
they write, because, like I said, you can tell when
a bennisforts, you can tell when it's a very natural
part of the band. And I feel like these guys
(41:06):
they had that commercial aspect to them, but it's natural
for the songwriting and it really comes across as very
genuine and sincere, which is why I'm fucking vibing. I'm like,
oh shit, why haven't I heard this before, Kevin? Have
you ever heard of a band Calledestrio?
Speaker 2 (41:20):
I haven't, actually so, they're from.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Our hometown, San Diego, North San Diego. They were doing
pretty well. They were actually popping off. I had to
just go check out their album. Chapters very similar to
this to the more of the last two songs on
this play as Hope and tracing back Roots. But I'm
loving this so far. I dig I love the big breakdowns.
I love the use of the breakdown as a chorus
with the poppy chorus. I'm gonna sucker for those andro
(41:45):
drop me your thoughts on Hope.
Speaker 5 (41:46):
Man, I will, and I am, yeah, just going off
of what you said where it's like, you know, just
the writing and just how genuine. There's a lot of
like twists and turns, and I really appreciated, like, you know,
even the prow and I was like, whoa, what the
hell like that? That's sick. I love it when I
(42:08):
don't know, when you get those like twists and turns
and I don't know, it just keeps you engaged. There's
a lot of like layering. Yeah, I don't know. It
took me by surpries, like I usually am not into
like woes.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
Yeah, we know, you know, we know you're into Wow.
I'd rather hear that kind of you know, wow, hello me.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
But you held my hand and we did it together
and it wasn't that bad.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
So it's it's no longer hello me. It's this isn't
new me, Like wow, wonderful, wonderful, Rudy, do you like
the Woes?
Speaker 10 (42:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (42:41):
I love the Woes.
Speaker 7 (42:43):
This song was.
Speaker 4 (42:44):
Actually my favorite song out of this playlist.
Speaker 6 (42:46):
That was because I listened to it early like three times, okay,
and I kept going back to this song even after
I listened to it. How uplifting and uh, you know
hopeful that it's good good, feel good music, you know
right right.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
When do you think like what's it? What's what is
the time of day or a moment when you would
listen to a song like this. I can wake up
to this, man, wake up, just wake up.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
Waking up to this sounds pretty.
Speaker 1 (43:13):
Let's go, It's fucking it's fun to stay up. I
love it. I love it. Rudy Baji, I don't want
to know when you would listen to the song during
the day. Just go ahead and tell us your thoughts
on the song.
Speaker 8 (43:26):
Good song.
Speaker 7 (43:28):
I'm I'm really digging the non team vocals.
Speaker 9 (43:31):
I love that punk aspect that it has to it
because you know me, I'm I'm a sucker for like
anything like punk punk vocals. I'm a sucker for punk vocals.
Fucking love that ship. But fucking I'm loving the punk vocal.
But at the same time, I'm loving the pop vocal.
So like, I love that mix.
Speaker 7 (43:48):
It's like very like you said, it's it's very it's
not force, it's very natural.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
And oh dude, if you like that punk vocal, I
got something for you on the next one.
Speaker 5 (43:57):
Just waiting.
Speaker 7 (43:58):
But yeah, no, good talk.
Speaker 1 (44:01):
Actually, you and Kevin can because like I like Rise Against.
I know my wife Against. I know that they're what
are your favorite bands? So like, I know when Kevin
and I were talking about what bands to do is
between rise against, and it was between we came as romans,
so I picked. I told him we should go with
wee him as romans. But maybe next time we'll do
rise Against. We'll put that on the list to do it. Sure,
(44:22):
because metallogies in just about metal and we also do
hard rock too. Right. We did nickel Back on the Umbrella,
the hidden Nickelback episode that will never release you guys,
did you?
Speaker 3 (44:31):
Guys did Three Days Grace with good old mister head
mental joker Julian Parnell.
Speaker 1 (44:35):
So that's right. That was the Divorced Dad soundtrack. Oh yeah,
you said. Bajia Boji is a divorce dad without the
ex wife and without the kids. The divorce divorce dad.
This is my soundtrack and I don't even have an
ex wife and it can it take care of wonderful?
All right? So this next one on the play this
is called Wasted Age. This is off the band's Cold
(44:56):
Like War album from twenty seventeen. This is Wasted Age.
Do you feel like you wasted your age? Nope? I do?
Did you a little bit?
Speaker 5 (45:06):
I think we all do it.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
I'm getting better that's what pushes us, so push us
to make us better exactly. Lit's listen to the song, right,
let's do Okay, let's go wasted Age.
Speaker 8 (45:13):
I got it second.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
So that's a sick bounce, a rest, a little hardcore
in there.
Speaker 11 (45:36):
I love it.
Speaker 13 (45:48):
Stop that's cool.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Okay, interesting chorus.
Speaker 8 (46:05):
Mm hmmm, h.
Speaker 1 (46:20):
There it is right there, the bounce with Yeah. I
love the hardcore elements of the song.
Speaker 7 (46:32):
Fucking like a hardcore fucking love that.
Speaker 1 (46:43):
You gotta do with me, Hondro, you gotta do the
woes with me? Coming up right here, coming up? I
think it's here, were boy.
Speaker 4 (47:05):
That's all it was to.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
See that for the course one. So kind of got it,
wasted Age, love it. I'm living the hardcore elements. The
chorus is interesting as fun. I kind of got lost
with the pre course of the chorus, but not a.
Speaker 5 (47:21):
Bad position was like well, and then it was like,
oh shit.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
It's always something. No, we're fucking strutting, we're struttening. That
was beautiful, like johns Wilton Grease. You see Grease. This
is the song that would be playing in Greece. I'm
just playing it would not be because I was nineteen
seventy four. Some shiit An era, different era, but this
song is modern era. I love to jump riff that
(47:45):
fucking breakdown though I missed it, but that breakdown was
I could hear it out of my ear.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
This quite sounds cool, very common.
Speaker 1 (47:55):
Owl City.
Speaker 11 (47:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
I feel like if Record Ralph had a metal soundtrack,
this would be the single. I love Record Ralph. Anyways,
what remember of Owl City? The song said, recall kiss
my ass?
Speaker 4 (48:14):
You give a ship for saying something that one reminded
of Sonic.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
You guys said four bands and every song was that
song something good? Playing Sonic?
Speaker 2 (48:23):
Why?
Speaker 1 (48:23):
Because it was upbeat?
Speaker 5 (48:24):
Sonic lives in many things.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
Dude, you motherfuckers. Dude, those movies suck, by the way,
all right, They're not good. They're not a good human.
You guys are grown. Kevin thoughts on Wasted Age. Why
did you pick this song for the playlist?
Speaker 3 (48:45):
I think I said in my intro too, and especially
the intro to we came as romans. This was the
song that immediately got me to the band the first
time I heard it. That introduction of you got me
think of it's over so hear me now and just
goes into that riff. I was just and enamored by
it the entire way through the aggressiveness of it that
more hardcore punk feel, especially in the verses when you
(49:06):
get to the chorus hearing Kylpmoane's vocals once again over
that specific guitar tone that just reminded me a lot
of the chorus guitar tone two above my head by Polaris.
I immediately fell in love with the song, and I
knew immediately right then and there that if I was
ever a WWE wrestler and I need an entrance song,
this is the one I would choose. And I don't
(49:27):
give a shit if about licensing rights or whatever. You know,
whoever was in charge of Crave Brother, was Vince McMahon
at the time or Triple H now, I would still
make him pick give me the song and say screw it,
it works.
Speaker 1 (49:38):
Gotcha because it does. Definitely. Cody Roads And speaking of
Cody Rhodes, what Russell Mania is this weekend?
Speaker 4 (49:45):
Right, Yes, sir?
Speaker 1 (49:46):
Yeah, thoughts on I just want a real, real fast
thoughts on Johnson and Cody Rhods. We'll go with our guests.
Because FAJ doesn't watch wrestling, you don't watch wrestling. I'm
me and Rudy kind of watch wrestling, Kevin, I want
to hear your thoughts on John Cena's hill turn, and
do you think they're gonn to drop the belt to
him for his retirement year or do you think Cody's
gonna come out.
Speaker 3 (50:04):
John Cena's heel turn was needed because that Cody was
finally starting to pick up a Cody needs somebody that's
an ultra heel to go against to really stand out.
I've been a John Cena fan ever since I was
a kid, so this has always been exciting for me.
I'm gonna be watching it, and my take is we'll
see if this age as well or not. But at
(50:25):
the end of the night, Johnsen is gonna be standing
tall with the belt over his shoulder, on his waist
whatever it is for title number seventeen, So you hope.
Speaker 2 (50:34):
So I love Cody really, but Cody can't see this coming, man.
Speaker 6 (50:40):
Yeah, what fucker, dude, He's done it, He's paid his time.
Speaker 4 (50:45):
Dude, he deserves it.
Speaker 1 (50:46):
I think John, I don't know, it's like dropping the
tunnel of rockets, Like do you need another title?
Speaker 12 (50:50):
Like?
Speaker 1 (50:51):
I don't know. Anyways, So I think Cody's gonna come
out the winner. I think Cody gonna come out hot
and he's gonna sensing off to the to Valhalla.
Speaker 4 (51:00):
I'm gonna be pissed. Why you be pissed?
Speaker 1 (51:03):
You're like Cody Roads.
Speaker 4 (51:04):
No, no, really, I'm not a fan of him, honestly, all.
Speaker 1 (51:08):
Right, thank you for your thoughts, Rudy. You asked me,
so what do you who think he's gonna win? Cody
or not? I fucking hate Cody Roads all trash ass.
Speaker 4 (51:24):
Wrestler, even though he's doing what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (51:27):
Still supported See, I was too old for John Cena.
I was. I was like, I was like, just it
was just out of the attitude and I was like
Johnson now doing a song with method Man and coming
out fucking I'm stone cold and undertaker. Right, I'm like,
you can't the rock versus scene of the promos for that,
you can't hear me?
Speaker 12 (51:45):
I was.
Speaker 1 (51:45):
I fucking love those I love Peacemaker though, but I
will say that Peacemaker Johnson is awesome. I'll say that.
All right, here we go, we're gonna get into the
Nickson on the playlist. This one is awful. Help me out,
Kevin was this a single or is it a double
single EP or because it only has two songs on here.
Speaker 3 (52:06):
Yeah, So from the first note, which the song will
be going into. It was a double single that came
out Carry the Weight and from the first note were
the first two songs that we came as Romans, released
following the passing of Kyle Pavone. So any clean vocals
here are gonna be done by Dave Steven's the guy
who's done vending the unclean vocals.
Speaker 1 (52:23):
This whole time, got You, Got You sounds great. So
this is from twenty nineteen. This is from the first note,
Jake right, it's a post hardcore.
Speaker 10 (52:45):
Stop the fuck, oh shit.
Speaker 1 (53:24):
Pursus goa hell yeah, it's all the ride. Yeah alright,
(53:59):
so I was from the first know, yes, I love it.
We were trying to map out the no we're gonna
go These were like a little harder, a little bit huh,
where are they going with this? Excellent riding because they
didn't just repeat it over and over again. You and
me are trying to figure it out. We're like, we
know they're not going to repeat it. That's kind of cool.
(54:19):
Leave it at the top. Uh, Kevin, why did you
pick from the first note.
Speaker 3 (54:25):
May reason I picked it was because, of course, with
the unfortunate passing the Calibone in twenty eighteen, the band
had a choice to either continue on with what they
had or.
Speaker 2 (54:35):
With a new singer that was going to take his place.
They couldn't.
Speaker 3 (54:38):
They said that Calpavone was, you know, always going to
be part of the band, that his impluence is ever
gonna leave, and that he could never be replaced. So
they just forged on, continue on with who they had,
and of course, and now Dave Stevens does both clean
and unclean vocals. If you ever seen met a show
at any point in time, now we're in the future,
they are always evoking Kyle's memory in every single show,
(55:00):
always bring up so he is still fully as entrenched
in the band as is. This was a song that
you got to see exactly kind of where the band
was at that point in time and where the band
was going to eventually go as they progressed on into
their twenty twenty album Dark Bloom, which really explores that
whole entire time when they lost Kyle and how they
went through the whole entire grief process. One of the
(55:21):
beautiful things that's at the in the breakdown from the
first note is they take a sample of to Plant
to Seed, the first song we listened to towards the
end of that song is vocals from Kyle Pavone that
are sampled in there, so you still feel like it's
part of him there. And the last thing I'll say
about the song is, if you watch the music video,
it looks like the guys are playing this like in
(55:41):
a greenhouse full of a bunch of luscious plants, because
the first album was to Plant the Seed, and now
this is them singing about the loss of their friend,
and it just shows kind of like that full like
circle thing where to plant the seed.
Speaker 2 (55:54):
Now the plants are in full bloom and beautiful to look.
Speaker 1 (55:56):
At, got a beautiful beautiful I love when bands get
super real about the circumstances there and what's up, Budgy nothing.
I love the bands when when man, because a lot
of bands, like we're writing about heartbreak right about an
next girlfriend, we're writing about like politics, writing about I
love it when they get super real with their circumstances
(56:17):
of situation with their lyrics. Metallica never really did that.
I think they did that a little bit uh with
with the whole Cliff Burton situation, but like slip Knot,
for example, with the Great Chapters, even though the record's
dark as fuck, it's still a beautiful record because it's
all written with uh, with Paul and mine. So I
think this is a very beautiful song to attribute to
(56:38):
that because I'm listening to it. At first, I'm like,
oh shit, this is about an X. Oh fuck that bitch,
fuck that bait. I miss you, but fuck that bitch.
Uh and then you and then you remind h so
the story Kevin, and I'm like, Wow, this is actually
a really nice little tribut because now I'm thinking about
a different perspective and I actually really love that. Andnro thoughts. Yeah,
from the first.
Speaker 5 (56:58):
Note, definitely a lot of like passion is fucking heard
and I the woes. You know, we're trying to figure
that out. But it's like, like you said, I'm glad
that like we're not just trying to retread, you know,
like the same way we're we're fucking trying new ship,
you know.
Speaker 1 (57:17):
But also like we sound like you know, like like
what you expect became as romans.
Speaker 5 (57:23):
Romans Like yeah, that that secret formula is still there,
still present.
Speaker 1 (57:27):
So beautiful good ship. I have a question if if
I passed away, if I was assaulted to death by
one Rodney Radkey, all right to tell And after Rudy's
playing Rodnnie Bradkey music at my funeral.
Speaker 6 (57:44):
They're gonna have him guest vocals on it. Yes, guest
vocals on a def song.
Speaker 1 (57:53):
We want to us Rodney want to do a tribute
to Anthony. I'm just right there my casket. Would you
write a dead song for me? Yes? You would absolutely.
Speaker 5 (58:04):
Reach into the depths of hell and get the inspiration
I need to. Uh, I'm just curious, honor you. What
would be the first verse for his verse would probably.
Speaker 1 (58:14):
Be I wish you were still alive, you fat fuck motherfucker,
wake up and and and no knowing Hondre. He would
be like, I'm just the like the most thrashiest riff
on six string standard tuning out over here, and like, really,
(58:34):
really you could write one breakdown for me. Uh, that's beautiful.
I appreciate the Sunday.
Speaker 5 (58:38):
It's a Tony homage slash Megaith homage. That's like I
just co buying both of them, com buying both of.
Speaker 1 (58:43):
Them and then you're gonna get dam was staying to
speak at my funeral. Man, This fat motherfucker. He just
kept making funny on his little podcast. He just did
it to taunt me.
Speaker 10 (58:53):
He just did it.
Speaker 5 (58:57):
What do you guys like, because.
Speaker 6 (58:59):
It'd be great if he fucking listened to this and
actually like commented.
Speaker 1 (59:05):
On something, which want Ronnie or Dave.
Speaker 4 (59:07):
I'd rather have Dave coolest ship he's not coolest. I would.
I would give you the biggest high five if you
got Dave missaying and touched.
Speaker 1 (59:16):
What are your thoughts on from the first note? I'm
upset because you know you want Dave on the podcast.
What are your thoughts on from the first note?
Speaker 4 (59:23):
It's a great, great song, dude, fucking amazing tribute.
Speaker 1 (59:25):
It's beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, And I mean you don't play music,
you know, in bands, But what would you do a
podcast about me if I passed away? Because he would
write a song for me? Yeah, you would, I would.
Speaker 4 (59:36):
I would uh tell all the stories that told the
high school.
Speaker 1 (59:46):
Tony was at player he cheated out three girls at
the same time, that dumb.
Speaker 10 (59:53):
And then what was it?
Speaker 1 (59:56):
What was the pump up song that will all become
did you listen to that episode, Kevin, Yes, yes, I
did it. Oh, man, I tell this heartfelt story about
like I'm going to like, I have no sympathies for you. Man,
that song comforted you when you're cheating on these bitches,
and I'm like, I was what I was doing. Bozzie
(01:00:17):
thoughts on from the first note. In fact, I loved
you from the first and then we hold your hand.
We're all holding I loved you from the first note. Yeah,
Kevin will hold his own hand, so sois holding the monitor.
Now we're all holding hands.
Speaker 7 (01:00:28):
We're all holding hands.
Speaker 9 (01:00:31):
No good song, fucking love the Love the tribute. Just
I like it when bends like do stuff like this, honestly,
for they pat they where they pay tribute to, you know,
past members or whatever the circumstances.
Speaker 1 (01:00:44):
Yeah, I think it's a great song, wonderful. We were
gonna write a song and defy it for you, but
you didn't die. You just quit, so should have just died.
So we're just gonna borrow for the shows. We'll say
thank you by you, Rita. All right, we're gonna go
into the last song on the playlist. Now, this is
actually a metology first, This is a menology first, because Kevin,
I'm over here trying to look at the date for
(01:01:05):
this song. I'm pulling up, getting ready to pull it up,
and I'm like, oh, this is a new song and
it dropped to day ironically, so today's single, today, new release,
So this is bad luck. Kevin, do you want to
offer your thoughts on this or do you just want
us to jump in because it's a new song.
Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
So guys, just jump in because today was my first
time listening to this track, and.
Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
I'm not going to preview it for you. Just jumping
and enjoy.
Speaker 1 (01:01:36):
Gotcha. Hopefully we didn't get bad luck with this song,
but we got bad luck, so we're gonna get into it.
Speaker 5 (01:01:41):
Cancels each other.
Speaker 1 (01:01:42):
Are you ready for the bad luck? I'm not ready
for bad luck jokes? You come ten times a day, dude.
You are the most dad out of all of us.
You could be. Your pillow is pregnant, all right, so
this is ad.
Speaker 8 (01:02:00):
Look, I think God, thanks too much. I know I
(01:02:27):
saw in my head Chad lad ghost fighting space with
Donald the same ghosts and Spanish.
Speaker 9 (01:02:37):
Shying thing hiding with me, you know, than my friends
mis Terarah listening.
Speaker 8 (01:02:44):
I think God thanks so much. I know you know me,
Scholas Josh, So.
Speaker 1 (01:02:57):
This is my song for today. That's a harsh vocal.
Speaker 10 (01:03:21):
H oh.
Speaker 8 (01:03:33):
Fuck, oh guess.
Speaker 7 (01:03:42):
I gotta.
Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
We're gonna listen to the whole song. This is a
great song. This is fantastic. Do the Arnold voice.
Speaker 5 (01:03:50):
Yeah, that's the hello.
Speaker 1 (01:03:53):
Yeah, that's a piggish nelly. She goes wink wink. If
you don't know talking about go listen to Arnold Swartz
Nigger self help audio book where he narrates it. It's
fucking amazing, hilarious, little piggy. She goes wink, clink, clink. Alright,
this song's badass. This song is fucking cool as shit.
I love what I'm hearing so far. I'm gonna say it.
(01:04:17):
I'm adding this playlist to my personal playlist because I've
loved like every song. I didn't think like I was
gonna be into this as much as I was I
had anticipated. I thought, oh, I'm gonna be surprised. I'm
probably gonna like it a little bit. I'm warning for
the conversation. But I'm over here like you. I'm fucking
I'm jamming, I'm fucking bumping. I think this song sounds great.
(01:04:38):
I love that, Like it's like a reggatone kind of beat.
Speaker 12 (01:04:40):
Like.
Speaker 5 (01:04:42):
Yeah, like I didn't expect that fucking energy.
Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
What's funny is I'm working on a five song where
I'm like, let me do a reggaetone. You saw the story, right,
And I just posted that yesterday and now I'm hearing
this like motherfuckers do. It's the same beat, it's a
little different tho. It's a little different. It's more corny.
But anyways, I love the song. I think the sounds great.
I love the harsh vocals from the chorus, like how there.
Speaker 5 (01:05:03):
Pushing vocals my standout, like especially when he hits those
high ass notes. But it's still like gritty, like that's
fucking impressive and I love that ship.
Speaker 1 (01:05:14):
Kevin, you got to understand something as a handro, Like
I said, unless it's a death to our cannibal corps
were vacation, it's not great. And you have a history
of not liking these kind of songs, and the fact
that you're digging with Kim Romans is a big surprise.
Speaker 5 (01:05:28):
Then okay with vocals like singing.
Speaker 12 (01:05:32):
What what.
Speaker 1 (01:05:35):
When we were doing vocals for the New As long
as there's no woes.
Speaker 5 (01:05:38):
The most open minded hey, and then you held my
hand and we did them together.
Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
You know, Kevin, that's the secret. Okay, we're gonna sup
with your lives. We're gonna up with their lives. But
it's cool. You're in, You're into with Chimis Romans. I
love it, Kevin. You picked the song. I mean, of course,
the newest song of the day or the new song
that came out today. I want to know what are
your thoughts on bad Light.
Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
I was really surprised by it at that intro. I
was just thinking, I'm not really sure where they're going
with this. But then as a song progresses on with
Dave doing the cleans in the first verse, very similar
what you guys did with your song Breakthrough. With the
cleans being in the verses, it throws everything off and
you're not expecting, especially in terms of what a lot
of modern metal bands are a lot of metalcore bands
(01:06:22):
usually do. Or they do the flip where it's the
unclean versus and the clean chorus, but bringing a little
bit more of the electronic pieces back, similar what they
did with like back into Plants to see what we
saw with Hope, but in a much different way. Still
brings it back to that this is a WEE Came
As Romans song, but it's just completely evolved for what
we are in for twenty twenty five. Dave's vocals are
(01:06:44):
the standout on this, completely showing as much range I
think as I've seen him show throughout his entire time
as with We Came as Romans, And this makes me
so damn excited for not only new We Came as
Romans music beyond this, but it's been like three years
since we got a new album. I can't wait to
hear what else they've been working on.
Speaker 2 (01:07:02):
This just is so damn exciting to listen to.
Speaker 3 (01:07:06):
I was making sure that this was on my playlist
today when I went running this today. I was running
out for like a little over an hour just all
We Came as Romans and when this song came on,
it was just that thought of this was so damn good.
Speaker 1 (01:07:21):
That's awesome. I love it. Yeah, this song is definitely
going on my personal playlists because I'm digging the whole.
Speaker 8 (01:07:27):
No no, no, no, no, no, no no no no no.
Speaker 1 (01:07:29):
I love that shit. I love it. Rudy thoughts on
bad luck are you having bad luck with this song,
and we having good luck with this song.
Speaker 8 (01:07:35):
It's a good luck good luck.
Speaker 4 (01:07:36):
Yeah, I like it.
Speaker 6 (01:07:37):
The vocals like the range on that shit. U it's insane. Yeah,
good song. I'm gonna so an album's coming out.
Speaker 1 (01:07:45):
This year or Yeah, what's going on with that, Kevin?
Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
I think we're supposed to get down at some point
this year. I'm taking a look at like what they've
you know, what they've announced so far. They haven announced
that many shows. I know they're dude to where. They've
announced a couple of festival dates. They're doing Rock in Wisconsin.
I think they're doing Incarceration. I know they're doing Louder
than Life. They do have an opening slot here in
Milwaukee on July fourth at Summerfest at the Amphitheater. They're
(01:08:11):
opening for Spiritbox and the headliner is bad Omens, So
there might be a tour built around that because Badams
is playing the same days as we came as romans
Is at Rockfest and Condot along with Incarceration in Ohio.
I know we're we're waiting for new music because this
is the first song we've gone since Dark Bloom released
as an album in October of twenty twenty two, So
(01:08:33):
it could come later this year, it could come early
next year. I don't know, but whatever it is, I'm
just excited and I'm really ready to see we came
as romans again because I've seen him twelve times so far,
all since the pandemic broke, and I didn't seem all
in twenty twenty four, So I am like.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
I need this man.
Speaker 1 (01:08:51):
Yeah, I feel I feel you. These guys are only
maybe be a blast live Baji thoughts on bad luck.
Speaker 9 (01:08:57):
I mean not much. I mean you guys pretty much
at all. But one of the things I do appreciate though,
is like the modernization of it. It's like, you know,
from what we heard at the at the first, you know,
the beginning of the episode to now like with this
new stuff right now, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:09:15):
I like that.
Speaker 7 (01:09:16):
I like that evolution.
Speaker 9 (01:09:17):
It's like it's still we came as romans, but it's
very like it's very modern metal as opposed to it
would be like you know, metal core, which I which
you know, I like because it's still it still has
like metal core aspects, but it's still but it's but
it's very more modern sounds modern.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
That I think for like generation like our generation, metal
core be considered like a Swedish metal meets like American metalwave,
American metal music, and that's how like we you know,
we grow with every band had like an athlicates kind
of vibe to it, where now metal core is almost
strictly metal and hardcore, but with like more electronic and
(01:09:59):
poppy influences. So it's really cool to see how like
the changes happened, because that didn't really happen with new
metal or thrash mellow, like you could tell a new
metal band a thrash metal band, the metal core the
definition has definitely changed for the last maybe fifteen years
or so. Would you agree on that, Kevin.
Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Oh Ah, I absolutely agree.
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
If you take a look at back when metal court
first really got going, if you look at bands like
Poison the Well or uh just really going back to them,
it's a complete different style comparatively to what we're seeing now.
With some of the bands that are popular now are
bands like especially go back to the Warped Tour days
and I'm talking about again here we got we came
as romans.
Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
Think about Double War's produm. Maybe a band like Woe
Is Me.
Speaker 3 (01:10:34):
There's a lot of that change in there and a
lot more of that electronic programming and since just really
came in and it amplifies it in a completely different way.
And I really do enjoy it because it shows a
little bit more range of what metalcore could actually be.
And I do agree with you guys said too, because
like thrash Metal, new metal, you know, one of those
bands from what they are, but you could call we
(01:10:54):
came as Romans, Medal Court, you called Poison the well
metal core. Put them side by side with each other,
and it's like these are kind of two different things
in a way, but they still have those commonalities.
Speaker 1 (01:11:03):
Got you, got you?
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:11:04):
I think Rudy even said in the chat today, like
when I said we're gonna do weekhim as Romans and
put in the playlists, you call them memo and I
was like, oh shit, I didn't know we're going out
that far. But yeah, yeah, it's very interesting to see
how the genre has changed. Well, thank you so much
Kevin for curating this playlist. It is awesome. I actually
love this playlist and I loved everything that occurred, which
is very rare for this podcast because normally half the
(01:11:25):
room hates what's on the Police and Halthroom loves it,
and the Halthroom talks about songs where are they cheating
on their girlfriends with? And yeah goes on the forms
about personal shit. So we had a blast with this one.
I had a blast with this one. I don't know
if we know the band has one up to give
an album recommendation, but Kevin, would you give us an
album recommendation? For us and also for our listeners who
(01:11:46):
are just hearing well him as Romans for the first
time and want to dig in for more?
Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
Ooh, if you really want to dig in for more? Uh,
I would say it depends on what way you'd want
to go. If you want to go for something that's again,
I'll go Kyle Pavone because he was a huge member
of the band. I'll go with the album Tracing Back Roots.
That's probably the one that I stick with the most.
That's when we heard Hope on. That's when we heard
Tracing Back Roots on. They've also got great songs that
(01:12:11):
are like fade Away and Ghosts that are on there
that I think you guys really like. If you want
to see more of what they've been doing recently, check
out the album Dark Bloom. It does get very vulnerable
with the lyrics because it really dives deep into the
band's journey following the loss of Kyle Pavone. There are
some softer songs on there as well that really show
(01:12:32):
that range. But you get a song on Odds Dark
Boom like Daggers featuring zero nine three six, which is
like three minutes. It's high energy, high intensity. If you
really want to go heavier though, check out the titular
song dark Bloom. But the one they did they remixed
it featuring brand A Sacrifice, so it is a lot heavier.
Speaker 1 (01:12:51):
Hell yeah, hell ya are you guys? Go ahead and
check that album out. I think we're all probably gonna
be checking that album out too, because that was the
two songs so that were on the album that was
on the Playoffs, So I was like, that's the one
I got to check out. We don't have a fall
off point because we've never like we're just being introducing
in this band for the most part, Cold I knew this.
This is more of a recent band for you. But
(01:13:13):
would you say you had a fall off put with
a Bend or have you been on the wagon ever
since you got into them.
Speaker 3 (01:13:17):
I've been pretty much on the wagon ever since that
show in twenty twenty two, when I'm like, that is it.
I am into this band, and it's been pretty consistent
ever since. And I always look in think about like
I always have a list in my head of like
my top ten favorite bands of all time. Number one
has been rise Against ever since I was fourteen, that's
been solidified up there, but every time it's like, you know,
(01:13:39):
there's always some shuffling in there, and as it's continued
going on, we came as rooms Iss sat at that
number two spot for the last couple of years, and
I don't see that changing anytime soon. So I wouldn't
say I've fallen off yet. I'm still really enjoying this.
If there was any potential to fall off recently, bad
luck just you know, changed it to where I'm fully
back in. If I ever was considering falling off.
Speaker 1 (01:14:01):
Yeah, like you're like, I'm not getting off anytime soon.
In fact, I think we all bought tickets for the
wagon as well. We're all going out to the wild
West cranking. We came as romans.
Speaker 2 (01:14:11):
I'm down we'll be doing tomorrow. Just all we came
as romans all day until I go see how Wood
on Dead Boy.
Speaker 1 (01:14:16):
Hell yeah, yeah, we'll be on that wagon. We'll be
staring at the stars. Boi's gonna be honest seventh time
of the day in the back of the wagon while
we're all rolling, just like, Hey, close your ears, don't
don't hear him. This is wonderful.
Speaker 12 (01:14:31):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (01:14:31):
Not sitting next to him.
Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
You're not.
Speaker 7 (01:14:36):
We ripped together.
Speaker 4 (01:14:37):
Man. One thing I don't I don't trust your anim bro.
Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
He has no aim. That's why his walls look like that.
That's why this room is all blacked out, turning a
black light in here looks like a horny Jeffrey Dahmer
spent a weekend and here. Damn Yeah, it's terrible. Anyways, Anyways, Kevin,
thank you, thank you so much for coming on and
for introducing us two. We came as romans introducing our
(01:15:06):
listener as well, because this would definitely be a band
that we would not have talked about at you now
it brought them on, so we really really appreciate that. Kevin.
I want to hear from you Roka, because I know
we talked about this previously, but I want to know
what's like the highlight of the year, the moment of
the year in metal rock music that you're looking forward to.
Is there, like an album, a tour, What is like
the big moment for you?
Speaker 3 (01:15:26):
Ooh, I mean it's kind of tough because for me,
my person, my big moment is going to be a
lot of Than Life festival, just seeing how insane that
lineup is and the potential for collaborations that could come
off of that. When it comes to maybe a moment
that's happened already that we're you know, we're shooting this
on April seventeen, wel for me, now it's April eighteenth
(01:15:47):
of twenty twenty five. The biggest moment so far this
year has to be that White Chapel album.
Speaker 8 (01:15:54):
Yeah, it's just.
Speaker 3 (01:15:55):
Something intense and I was lucky enough to hear it
like a week and a half early because I got
to interview Ben the guitarist for the Core Progression podcast
and I was like, how the hell did you guys
do this?
Speaker 5 (01:16:08):
Because it was.
Speaker 3 (01:16:11):
Their best work so far. Yeah, and it's it's album
of the year material. And I've seen heard other albums.
I'm like, these are good albums. Alms are still yet
to come out, but damn they still can't beat that
White Chapel album. That thing was too damn good.
Speaker 1 (01:16:25):
Yeah, that was definitely a highlight for us. We reviewed
that album right here on the podcast the day came
out and you know, you guys saw my life raction.
I'm fucking losing my mind. I'm like, oh Godre doesn't
listen to sucking any death corps And like you were
like blasting White super super stoked on that. That's awesome man. Well, Kevin,
I just want to say thank you so much for
(01:16:45):
coming on for dealing with our masturbatory talk with a
great one himself right here, and we're learning a little
bit more about menology lore. Even though Rudy, I know
you feel like it was unnecessary, I believe it was
necessary because we talked about Kennedy events here.
Speaker 5 (01:17:01):
Just enough number.
Speaker 2 (01:17:03):
Yes, yes, I have something to aspire to now.
Speaker 1 (01:17:10):
So no, you don't just don't don't even try This
is a do not try this at home, try advise.
Do you put oral jel on the base?
Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
Costs major dehydration.
Speaker 1 (01:17:26):
Oh he's hydrated, he's right there. I need my gallon
of Pedia light glug glug all hot and ship hot Pedia.
Speaker 8 (01:17:38):
Energy.
