the State File about Pokey Reese. Pokey Reese. First of all,
Pokey Pokey's fifty two years old today. That's unbelievable when
you think about.

It, because on my he was also on my Chipper
Jones Yvon Rodriguez ball that I lost.

Ah. Yes, but you know Pokey played for the Wheelers
the last year before they changed to the alley Cats, right,
I believe he did. Wasn't his last year with the Wheelers,
like ninety three, I can't remember, No, No, his last year.
I think earlier than that, I thought. I don't think so,

think he played. I think he played on the last
Wheelers team before they changed the name to the alley Cats.
But anyway, you were pointing out the fact that, you know,
Pokey was a really good player. Remember people were ripping
him because he didn't have a good bat. You know,
in retrospect, he was a pretty decent major league hitter.

And for somebody that was considered a glove guy, and
he was, I mean, he wasn't necessarily Ozzie Smith elite,
but he was pretty elite. I mean, he had a
two to fifty career batting average, stole almost two hundred bases,
he did fine.

His entire season, one hundred and six games with Charleston
Wheelers in nineteen ninety two, was in Chattanooga in ninety three.

I actually stopped working for the Wheelers in nineteen ninety two,
and I know that I covered his entire season. That's
how I knew it was ninety two. It couldn't have
been ninety three because I didn't work there.

Steeler for the first time today worked out at the
media little give and take, you know, we talked about
this in the four o'clock hour. We played a little

to do to win over his new teammates and the media.

high profile player is everybody's in question of like, what's
his motive?

you know, walk around, be the tough guy. It was
just like, okay, look, we lost a ton of players.
We traded a ton of players for you. We need

to make me say, okay, it was worth it. Unfortunately

from earlier today reacting to the meeting that Aaron Rodgers
had with his Steeler teammates before his media availability today
at three point thirty, Anthony, let me ask you about
Zach Fraser. So, Fraser, you know he was basically watching

Aaron Aaron Rodgers on TV. Yeah, just growing up, you know,
beating the Steelers in a Super Bowl. Now suddenly he
finds himself in his second year out of WVU, Fairmont
native hiking the ball to a first ballot Pro Football
Hall of Famer. I mean, this is the kind of
stuff you dream about when you're a kid, right, absolutely,

especially growing up in the Fairmont area. Yeah, man, being
he's probably I don't know if he's I think he's
a Steeler fan, but you know, growing up in the
Fairmont area and obviously probably following the Steelers. And then
you have a Hall of Famer walk into the locker
room and this is the guy that you're snapping the
ball to that you got to protect. Yes, So that's
a that's a big, a big honor. I mean to

have a guy like that, you know, to be able
to block for him. I'm sure he's probably honored by
the fact that he's there.

But again, back to Carl's point, you got to start
to produce it that no longer becomes an honor, right,
you know, it's like, who's this guy?

But when Aaron Rodgers says, hey, man, I want to

that's no secret. He didn't show up Trey Hendrickson with
the Bengals. He needs a new deal. He expects to

with Pittsburgh. H Terry McLaurin the wide receiver for the commanders.

These guys all are missing these mandatory mini camp workouts.

I think there was that two or three days of
training camp that we were wrapping up a deal and
I wasn't sure that the general manager was actually going
to go through with this, so I, you know, I
took a couple of days off and it got done
and and but it was no hoopla around it, like

Carly's sitting out. Everybody kind of knew that the deal
was sitting there. We were just kind of waiting on
it to finalize it. And but players, it's funny, players
are different and have different viewpoints of guys that are
hanging out there, you know, waiting, cause it's like, do

I really think you deserve maybe what you might be
asking you have, Like you have those kinds of conversations
and or guys say, hey, I don't blame him, and
you end up having like different opinions throughout the team.

Well, I'm just thinking about you know, if you're out
there busting your humph trying to impress the coaches, and
you're thinking, well, Carl's back home, he's got his feet
up with his Nintendo switch to right now.

You know, most players, most players who hold out in
most cases are actually working like they're working, and they're
probably even working somewhere in and around the facility so
that everybody's aware. You know that you're not just sitting
home with your feed up hoping somebody's gonna come and
drop a dollar in your lap.

Anthony, I haven't seen you since the WVU baseball season ended,
so yeah, I mean, it was painful the way it
went down this weekend, but I think the more time
that passes, I think we'll probably kind of come around
to the idea that was probably one of the best
seasons WV ever had. And now you're you know, I'm
not expecting the team to go to the Super Regionals

three years in a row, but I think after going
in back to back years, it's something that is a
reasonable goal.

Well, I woke up Monday morning and I felt just
like it was a really it was a successful season.
I mean, you're big twelve champions, You've made a Super
Regional again, uh for two years in a row under
a first year coach from the Let me let me
For the Mountaineer fans listening, let me from a recruiting perspective,

(11:10):
because obviously my nephew is a pretty high profile I
always always say talking about him too much, but he's
a high profile recruit baseball recruit, and this season got
his attention, although he's already going to Alabama or he's
going into the draft, but he was talking w baseball
with me. It got a lot of attention. So if

(11:31):
it got his attention, what did it do across the
country to the point where if they hosted a regional,
he was like texting me, like, you want to meet
in Morgantown, Let's go. So it got a lot of attention.
And so what that's going to do moving forward is
help the recruiting, right, I mean, you've you've proved yourself
as a program. Even the perspective from the recruiting stance

(11:53):
is they are the premier team in the mid Atlantic area.
If you are looking to go to a Maryland, Penn State,
pit Clemson North, you know, West Virginia is a team
that now three four or five star recruits are looking
at as a serious destination, where in the past that
may not have been the case.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
It's funny too, I mean, there's the two sides to it.
Number one, it does help recruiting. The other side is
suddenly other schools are aware of the core of talent
that you have and now they can buy those players.
Right if they choose to do that, that's an unfortunate.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Part of them.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Yeah, that is really that is the bad side to it. Yeah,
so that's the way that's happening right now. Oh and
I did want to mention we've got some college basketball
rules changes that have just come down, just come down
this afternoon and quickly, let me read this to you.
Changes include a coach's challenge at any point a game
to review out of bounds calls, basket interference, goaltending, and

whether a secondary defender was in the restricted area ARC.
This isn't a press release from the NCAA today. The
panel also approved modifications to the rule on contentuous motion
to field goal attempts. I guess that means and one right.
Other enhancements will help the flow of the game focus
on the points of emphasis for officials this year. Those

(13:10):
will include directives to address delay of game tactics, limit
time spend at the monitor, improve game administration efficiency, and
reduce physicality. And there's a couple of things here at
the bottom of this release that are kind of interesting,
including one new rule. If one of the shot clocks
becomes inoperable, the shot clock at the other basket will

(13:31):
remain on. Previously, both clocks would be shut off until
both are operable, So that's pretty interesting. That is pretty interesting.
But there's a couple of details about this coaches challenge.
You won't be able to challenge unless you have a
timeout available. Okay, the coach that's challenging a play must

(13:54):
have a timeout available to request a review. If the
review is successful, teams will be allowed to have one
additional video review challenge for the rest of the game,
including overtime. So that is new today. That is new today. Quote.
If the first video review challenge is unsuccessful, the team
loses the ability to challenge the rest of the game unquote.

(14:16):
So now you got a little strategy here going right,
because you might want to keep that challenge in your
back pocket for the last minute of the game. And
if there's something that happens in the first five minutes
of a game that you think is wrong, you may
just let that go because you want to hold that challenge.

I mean, that's that's that's I mean, you literally have
to really be thinking is this going to work out?
