Coming up this morning, we'll talk momentarily with the new

Meadows in our Charleston studios this morning. Morning, TJ.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
Good morning buddy, and don't downplay our significance in your intro.
There you know, same old hosts. We're the continuity that
holds all the mad holes together, buddy, so we know
where we stand.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Something like that. So, so when are you going to
challenge Christian to match? By the way, never, isn't that
the next step from the West Virginia Open.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
No, I've known him for a long time, lives in
my neighborhood, and no way I'm challenging that guy to anything,
because he would whip my tail all over the course
and then some he could give me one hundred strokes,
he'd prace still beat me.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
He will join us coming up at eleven thirty three
this morning. Jake Link on the video Sofia WAA handling
the audio stream this morning. We were talking about this
going into the weekend. We start the week with the
same subject to the West Virginia Republican Party now has a
new leader taking it into the twenty six midterm election cycle.
The West Virginia Republican Executive Committee met for its summer
(02:36):
meeting over the weekend in Morgantown and selected Delegate Josh
Holstein from Boone County as its new chairman. And joining
us a'll mench a news talk line this morning is
the aforementioned Delegate Holstein. Josh, good morning, Congratulations, thanks for
joining us.
Speaker 6 (02:51):
Good morning, Dave, good morning, TJ. Thank you so much
for having me, guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Thank you for coming on. What's the first order of
business as the new GOP chair?
Speaker 7 (03:00):
Yeah, absolutely so.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
Right now, we're getting our things together and we're having
a change of administration here, and we're going to let
folks know that the Republican Party is growing fast and
we'd like to have as many people in West Virginia
that believe in our values, believe in hard work, faith
and freedom to support us and join our party. And
we're going to make sure we communicate that message to
the public.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
Josh, good morning, sir, Congratulations on your victory. Yes, sir,
you talk about those people a lot of independence, are there.
Speaker 8 (03:27):
Man.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Well, under your tenure, will you push to reopen the primary?
Speaker 6 (03:31):
Well, here's the decision that the State Executive Committee made
is still ongoing and it's still it hasn't been changed,
and I, as chairman, will not make a statement on
that outside of what the State Executive Committee does, So
I will not be weighing into that other than what
decision the committee makes. They have decided to close it
(03:52):
and have maintained that so far, so we will see
if that change is prior to the election.
Speaker 7 (03:58):
But no change has been made as at this point.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Josh, there are executive committees in every county across West Virginia,
but probably more than half of them are inactive. They
really don't do much, twenty or very active. How can
you or can you, from your role as party chair
state party chair, get the rest of those inactive executive
committees in the counties active again?
Speaker 9 (04:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (04:21):
Absolutely.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
I think communication is huge, and that was one of
my big talking points on the campaign when I spoke
to folks on the State Executive Committee, is we do
a bad job at communicating with the public and a
terrible job at communicating with each other.
Speaker 7 (04:34):
If our message was wrong, Frankly.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
If we didn't have the values of the folks in
West Virginia, we wouldn't be doing as well as we are,
but I think we can do so much better with
increased communication. And again, one of those ways is just,
you know, from the state party perspective, reaching out to
our counties and saying, what do you need from us?
Speaker 7 (04:51):
How can we help you grow?
Speaker 6 (04:52):
How can we help you recruit more candidates, how can
we help you fundraise?
Speaker 7 (04:56):
And you know that's going to be.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
The first really the first order of business for is
calling everyone on the Executive Committee and saying, how can
I help. I'm here to help, and I'm willing to
do what is necessary to help us expand our party
and grow our numbers everywhere.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
I'm looking at the ballot on second ballot, sixty three
fifty seven to you over West Perry again, congratulations, but
you know, not a landslide. I think even you would
say that, how do you start to work with those
people who back to Perry? How do you bring unity
into party? Because as you know, sometimes the fiercest political
battles can be within the party themselves.
Speaker 6 (05:28):
Absolutely well, there was tremendous unity at the end of
the meeting for everybody that was there. I think everyone
can say that mister Perry stood up and gave a
great speech immediately after the election and was conciliatory, and
you know, he ran a great race, and so doctor
George as well. We're all Republicans at the end of
the day. We just have different methods and different styles.
(05:51):
And I've said the entire time, and I've maintained this
that both doctor Perry and doctor George and mister Perry
were are great men and they've contributed a lot to
the party. And again I've I've gotten to know mister
mister Perry over the years, and I think he's a
great guy and we're gonna work together. So I don't
think that's going to be difficult at all. We I
(06:12):
spoke to many folks who didn't vote for me immediately
after the vote, and it's water under the bridge. We're
there's there's no there's no grudges in this party. We're
gonna we're gonna make sure that that we work together
as much as possible, and so I'm not concerned about
that at all.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Josh Holsteen joining us SO on Metro News talk line
Boom County delegate and the new chair of the State
Republican Party. So, Josh go back about maybe ten twelve
years ago, Republicans had a plan, they were very organized,
the committees were moving in the same direction, and then
the success comes. You have the majorities in the Senate
(06:49):
and the House and obviously on the Board of Public Works.
It was almost as if the Republican Party, for lack
of a better metaphor, the dog caught the garbage truck
and then went, well, well, now what do we do?
And you're in the now what it seems like the
Republican parties in the now what portion? So I question
to you, Josh, now, what's.
Speaker 6 (07:09):
Again, there's a lot that unifies us. And as I
mentioned with you on our interview together last week prior
to the vote, we are not afraid as Republicans to
discuss our differences and we'll do it publicly. That's what
makes us different than Democrats, and I do think that's
there's a.
Speaker 7 (07:27):
Lot of positive things that come from that. Folks see that.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
We're willing to have a debate, We're willing to have
a discussion and share different ideas. And again I would
just say we have been majorly successful since we've been
in charge. We had to rewrite our entire state platform
because most of the platform priorities just from twenty twenty
to twenty twenty four were complete, had been completed, had
been successfully implemented. So there's a lot that Republicans can
(07:55):
hang their hat on in this state, and we're going
to continue making those gains.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
I want to move back to twenty fourteen, plain truth, Josh,
Republicans could not have won taking the House, the Senate,
et cetera without independence. Now you move forward to today.
These numbers are as of close of business last month,
just shy of five hundred thousand Republicans in the state,
just shy of about three hundred thousand independents, about three
(08:20):
hundred and thirty four thousand Democrats. Just on the numbers alone,
Republicans can't win even today without independence. If that independent
support was to sway Democrat, you guys would have problems.
What do you say to independents who are disenfranchised about
the closed primary? How do you convince them to want
to vote for you in the general? Because I see
(08:41):
it on social media, I'm sure you do too. A
lot of Independence are really upset with this closed primary business.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Sure, I would just say that I do believe that
the vast majority of Independence in the state believe in
the conservative values that we have.
Speaker 7 (08:54):
They believe in the Republican.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
Party, who were led by in Washington, by President Trump
and our leadership West Virginia, and at the end of.
Speaker 7 (09:01):
The day, I don't think that's going to have that
much of an impact.
Speaker 6 (09:04):
Again, we are greatly appreciative, and I speak on behalf
of the State Executive Committee and I have to represent
their opinion, and that opinion has been made and maintained.
But I would just say we encourage all independence and
we welcome all independence to join our party. We want
to grow our numbers, We want to grow our party,
(09:24):
and we want them to be a part of it.
But we just need them to register Republican and join
the team. We're at a very important part or really
an important time in our country where decisions have to
be made, and we would just ask that folks pick
aside and join us and become Republicans. And we believe
we've proved ourselves to the folks of West Virginia and
(09:45):
will continue to do so.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Josh Holstein is joining us boone County Delegate new chair
of the State Republican Party and to build off what
TJ is say, not to belabor the independent point. But Josh,
you know how the world works. Watching been in the
legislature now, I think what third term now in the
House of Delegates, Yes, sir, nobody's confusing. Democrats have a
long way to go before they can challenge for majorities
(10:11):
in the Senate and in the House. But the pendulum
does swing. Are you concerned that the legislature and Republicans
need to start delivering on more economic issues, more job
growth issues in the near future, or that pendulum could
start swing the other direction.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
Absolutely.
Speaker 6 (10:29):
I think the people of West Virginia and the people
of our country, frankly, they deserve to see results and
they expect Republicans to deliver. So we've absolutely got to deliver.
We can't just run on platitudes. We've got to run
on results, and I think we've been successful in doing
that so far, and I think we'll continue to be.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
Josh, I don't want to take anything away from your win.
You deserve the credit. However, Senator Justice did endorse you
to what extent Do you think that endorsement played a
role in your success?
Speaker 7 (11:01):
Absolutely? I was very grateful.
Speaker 6 (11:03):
I had a great discussion prior to announcing my run
with Senator Justice and you know, he enthusiastically supported me,
and I was greatly appreciative of that.
Speaker 7 (11:11):
And you know, I also had discussions with many.
Speaker 6 (11:13):
Of our other I think all of our other state
and federal elected officials and you know, prior to my decision,
and had great conversations with them as well.
Speaker 7 (11:21):
So I'm grateful for all of their support. And we're
going to work together.
Speaker 6 (11:24):
We're all on one team, and we're gonna march forward
in a unified front together.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Talking about Josh Holstein, Boon Kenny Delegate new gpeople, Harty Chair,
you're twenty three, how can you appeal to younger voters
just coming out registering for the first time, getting ready
to vote in their first election, possibly in twenty six
How could you appeal to them to get them to
join the GOP.
Speaker 9 (11:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
I think one of the things the stereotypes about the
Republican Party over the years is that it's say it's
the party of older folks or older older.
Speaker 7 (11:56):
Men in particular.
Speaker 6 (11:57):
And I think what we've seen really with President Trump,
we in twenty twenty four, we saw a massive change
in the coalition. We saw more minorities, more younger folks,
and again I'll bring bring back the point that I
mentioned to you earlier, which is we are a multi ethnic,
working class party now and that involves people of all ages,
(12:19):
people of all races, people from all different areas across
our country, and and that's the same way in West Virginia.
Speaker 7 (12:26):
We're going to continue working on that.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
And I think I can you know, as a young person,
I know how to message and reach out to folks
my age.
Speaker 7 (12:33):
They're not all on Facebook. They're in different places.
Speaker 6 (12:37):
So it's it's very important that we that we choose
all the different platforms, to all the different media platforms
to reach out to folks.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
And we're going to do that.
Speaker 6 (12:46):
We're going to implement new strategies and we're going to
reach out to people where they are and meet them
where they are.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
So, Josh, you're not a kid. That's not what I'm
saying with this comment. But I hear the kids are
on TikTok man. That's that's what I hear.
Speaker 7 (12:57):
All that is true.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
I got to learn to think or two about that
as well.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Rumors, political rumors scuttle, but I mean there is always rumors,
but one that I consistently hear, frankly from a lot
of different people, so I can't discount it is that
Governor Morrisey will face a primary challenge. The role of
the party in a primary is one of neutrality. I
would think, at least that's been the way it's done
in the past. That's going to be a job for
(13:22):
you as a new chair, depending on who would challenge
the governor. How do you deal with that? If a
primary does indeed come to fruition.
Speaker 6 (13:29):
Sure, I think that right now that is way too
early to speak to that. We haven't had anything official,
and I frankly haven't heard many rumors about that. I
would just say that we support all of our income
and office holders, and the party is always going to
support our elected officials always full stop.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Josh Holstein, Boon County Delegates and the new chair of
the State Republican Party. Josh, appreciate you stopping by. Thank you,
and I'm sure we'll have other conversations other days.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
Thank you, yes, sir, Thank you guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (13:59):

Speaker 13 (15:22):
I'll go out on a limb because people won't like
my answer. Probably, I think there's fewer coyotes than most
people imagine, really, because when number one, when you hear
a family group of them this time of year, the
pups are very vocal. The coyotes are getting They've been
kind of shut mouthed during the spring when they're young,
and it's like a bunch of teenagers when they get

TVT basketball coming up tonight from the Charleston Coliseum and
Convention Center, Best Virginia and shell Shock the Maryland Alumni
teen six o'clock tip coverage across the Metro News radio
network tonight three at four talk three or four is
the text line eight hundred and seven sixty five eight
two five five. Let me get in a couple of
texts here, TJ. Because I think it kind of piggybacks
(17:53):
one of the points you were making. I like, Josh
says the texture. He's from my area. But come on,
when politicians will not say what they are for or
against and step around the answer, and I'm sorry, I
vote Republican, register independent, but you're not going to make
me register as one. Like most people in West Virginia,
I don't like to be told what to do, and
(18:15):
I will not vote Republican as an independent based on principle.
So I think a couple of Texters, they're illustrating your
point that while the Republican the number of Republican registrations
has grown, it is now the majority in the state.
You still need those independent voters in a general election,
(18:37):
and if you shut them out of the primary process,
well you risk alienating like well, these two textures here
are saying, all right, fine, you don't want me. They
may not vote Democrat, TJ. But they may not vote
at all, which doesn't help your case. If you're Republicans
at that point.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
No, And look, one of the things you've said, and
you're right on this, it's Republicans primary. They can do,
you know, do what they want to do, decide what
they want to do. Here's what makes it different. Invite
Independence to the party in twenty fourteen because you need them,
and now you want to throw them away because you
feel like you don't need them. That's bound to create
some sore feelings. And honestly, just my two cents, I
think what'll happen, It'll depend on what primary races and
(19:15):
who are in those primary races to what extent. Independence
may want to switch over, make a vote and then
switch back. I could be wrong, but the thing about
an independent, if you care enough about your independence, you
probably don't care to go through the bother of going
down to the courthouse or wherever you have to go
these days, changing your vote or changing your registration and
then changing it back later. So I wouldn't discount them,
(19:36):
and I would be figuring out a way to make
sure they feel welcome and valued, or else you're going
to face potentially something in the general election.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
And I don't think it's twenty six I don't think
it's twenty eight, but as you get further down the road,
it could be thirty. It could be thirty two, could
be thirty four, could be somewhere down the road where
that that comes back to. But you may not be
twenty six maybe a little bit further down the road.
The other thing ToJ I think the challenge for Josh
will be, and Mike Pushkin has the same challenge over
(20:05):
on the other side with the Democrats as well, is
figuring out what's the direction, whether that's Josh, whether that
is bringing these Executive committee members together to try to
figure out what direction are you going to go? What
are you? I mean, what is the objective for the
Republican Party in West Virginia right now?
Speaker 9 (20:22):
Do they have one?
Speaker 1 (20:24):
They had one ten years ago and they pulled it off,
And like I said, we're in the what now portion
of that of that strategy. Well, what now they've done
school choice, cut taxes, I mean, we can go down
we know the list, we can go down that list.
What now and getting everybody, getting everybody on the same
page in the hymnal, if you will, is a tough
(20:46):
job when you have so many different interests in different
parts of the state. And different levels of Republican if
you will.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
And his influence will only go so far in that
regard in terms of what the Mortesy administration want to
do with the upcoming session, in terms of what legislative
leadership wants to do. But we heard it so many
times in the dome under the Dome at the Brotunda
last year. More economic development, more jobs, focus on business,
(21:14):
focus on the fiscal situation, social issues. Are you ever
going to change anyone's mind on social issues? I mean,
folks are pretty ingrained where they are. Why not focus
on something that can better everybody and move off of
these issues. Well, the reason you don't is because they're sexy,
they get headlines and they raise money. But eventually you
(21:35):
have to do something that has tangible results in terms
of legislation, things with the economy that we just talked about,
and if it's another session of not doing that, watch out,
watch out. I think there are some consequences to be
had there.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Your thoughts are welcome in three or four Talk three

but there's these long standing dollars CALLED Leda Legislative Economic
Development assistant, dollars and basically every, delegate every senator gets
so many dollars to take back home for projects that
folks want to fund in their. Communities, historically the governor
has never played a part in. That if you got

your finance cheer on, board you got the speaker or
the president on, board you're good to. Go Scott heckert
says that's not happening. Now he, says roughly about ten
fifteen thousand DOLLARS i don't have it in front of,
me is being held up for political purposes by the.
Governor so it begs the question why is that Happening?
Again he, says it's political. Retribution but historically it's a rubber,
(22:58):
stamp it's an accounting mechanism in terms of why those
dollars even flow through the governor's. Office SO i wrote
a piece about it this, morning basically, saying, Look morrissey's,
Constituents heckert's, constituents they're one and the. Same why hold
the dollars? UP i don't think it makes any sense
that they should suffer over political. Fallouts but we'll Get heckert's.

To Delegate Scott, Hecker ron and Cross. Lanes what's, Up, Ron.
Speaker 19 (27:28):
How are you guys doing?
Speaker 1 (27:29):
Great? Ron what's?
Speaker 19 (27:30):
Up you were talking about The Republican agenda for The
future and economic. Development West virginia has over one hundred thousand.
Regulations what they should do with regard to business is
start to tear those regulations. Down see what's, effective what's not,
(27:51):
effective eliminate that it's not. Affected, now with regard to,
safety you want to be very careful also with the
technologies into the. Future the legislature has to lay the
ground word for those technologies to be here in the.
State and we have to go back to put the
(28:12):
shop back into high schools so that we could train
the skilled labor force that's going to be needed for those.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Technologies, Hey, ron appreciate the phone, call AND i think
he's got a point there right THERE. ToJ the legislature
has to lay the, groundwork and that kind of goes
back to what you were. Saying you've got to come
up with some of this economic development job growth, legislation
AND ai is, here whether you're ready or.
Speaker 5 (28:36):
Not so the states that figure it out early and

Five talking three or Four talk three oh. Four before
the news, BREAK tj gave the outline of his commentary
at wv metronews dot com this, morning highlighting a story
in which stick grant dollars or at least one particular
(29:04):
request has been held. Up that would be Of Wood
County's Scott. Heckert he joins us on mention news talk
line this. Morning, scott good, Morning good, morning. Gentlemen appreciate
you coming. ON tj outlined his commentary about this. Controversy
what's your side of the, Story.
Speaker 8 (29:22):
Well it's really just political payback BECAUSE i didn't see
things the way Our Governor's Seen it or the groups
that pushed for our, Government governor See, It americans For
prosperity and The American Action. Fun they came after me
hard as well as they did other people that didn't
(29:43):
fall in line with well we were told to. Do
and it just continues.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
On, scott you said that your dollars are the only
grant dollars being held. UP i just want you to verify.
That you also say that you were given an ultimatum
from The governor's. Office describe that in your own.
Speaker 9 (30:03):
Words, WELL i.
Speaker 8 (30:05):
Have since found out THAT i talked to. You there
are some others being held up for the same reason
we didn't vote the way that we were told. To
THEN i was told by the chief financial officer over
the lead of, money Mister, wolfel that the message he
had received back was THAT i needed to agree to
(30:29):
the agenda that the governor wanted and work with what
he wanted done how he wanted, done AND i need
to make a public. Apology and that is not how
the government is set up and. Designed that's why there's three,
branches not.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Want Delegate Scott heckert joining Us Wood county. Delegates so
what would this. Money the grant, request what would it
be used?
Speaker 9 (30:54):
FOR i mean.
Speaker 8 (30:56):
Different projects in the. Community want is to help with
a revital relation of a theater at The Discovery. World
one is for The North Star Child Abtacy center to
help with stuff to. Them they are a group that
takes too of, abuse looks into and investigates and looked
after abuse and batter. Children another one is for software
(31:22):
upgrades and some security stuff for handicapped. Children others are
in the community to help with uniforms for sports and
a couple of different.
Speaker 5 (31:36):
Schools talk to me about why the governor's office is
involved in this in the first, Place.
Speaker 20 (31:46):
Advocate they have it set.
Speaker 8 (31:48):
Up legislature has it set up where the request have
to be approved by The chairman Of. Finance then they
have to go to The speaker or The Senate. President
then they have to go to The governor's office to
be signed off on the letter written out by the
(32:10):
governor stating that he has helped obtain. This it's as
much publicity for him and help with him in the.
Community it is for the delegates and the. Senators but if.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
It goes to his, office should he have a right
to say?
Speaker 8 (32:24):
No then, well in my, opinion, no because it's all
laid out in the budget every. Year, now he had
the right to take five hundred dollars away from each
delegate and his line item thing just to show that he.
Could no other governor THAT i know of and have
(32:48):
been told it had had ever done anything like.
Speaker 20 (32:50):
That but.
Speaker 8 (32:53):
He has the right to do. That if he wants
to hurt his, constituents that's that's his.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
Call talking to What County Delegate Scott. Heckert, So, scott
have you have you spoken to The governor's? Office have
you been able to reach any kind of a resolution?
Speaker 8 (33:12):
HERE i know the other day after you AND i
talked and then you reach out for, comment Mister wolfle
sent me an email that the governor had a lot
of request on his desk and that he and they
(33:33):
were going they were going over, Then and that's pretty
much it learn for meetings with the governor to shut
down and come to some kind of a. Resolution they
have been told me by his staff that he's not
ready to meet with me and the time is not
right to meet with, Me and ALL i can do
(33:55):
is stand up for what's right for my.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
Constituents can you confirm That, Chairman chris will stop processing
any requests for leada out of The house until yours are.
Speaker 8 (34:05):
Approved that is WHAT i have been. Told that is
the UNDERSTANDING i. Have, yes if he will do this
to one or a few of, us it's just a
way to force delegates to do what he wants to,
done how he wants to.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Know, Scott, well then can the legislature take that authority
away from?
Speaker 8 (34:33):
Him it is my understanding that we can't take it
away and move it to The treasurer's.
Speaker 5 (34:40):
Office you plan to do? That do you plan to
push for that as a member of the.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
BODY i, do.
Speaker 8 (34:50):
And there are other delegates that's.
Speaker 20 (34:52):
On board with.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
It why was His why include the govern and this
again the the prior governors have had this? Authority why
include the governor's office in the first. PLACE i don't
know if you are around for when that legislation was, Penned,
SCOTT i was.
Speaker 8 (35:08):
NOT i was.
Speaker 1 (35:10):
Not why include another branch from government when the legislature
has the power of the purse, Anyway.
Speaker 8 (35:17):
Well the legislature has the power of the. Purse it's
all designed for transparency and so everybody has to say
and what's going on.
Speaker 5 (35:29):
If the governor calls you today and you guys talk about.
This can you patch it up so that these programs
get their, money because, frankly at the end of the
day you said you'd mentioned. Constituents these seem to be
some pretty worthwhile programs that you've. ALLOCATED i think it's
sixteen thousand dollars two, overall over three or four different.
Programs can you guys make. Amends can you work this
(35:49):
out and move past it so these folks get their.
Speaker 8 (35:51):
MONEY i am willing to sit down with the governor
and he can bring as many as his team as he.
Wants i'm A i can take care Of Mike. TEL
i can speak for. MYSELF i will go and sit
down And i'm sure that we can come to a working.
Understanding but it takes too willing to sit down and.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Talk Wood County Delegate Scott. Heckert scott will continue to
follow this and keep us. Posted, okay thank you all very.
Speaker 8 (36:21):
MUCH i appreciate your all.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
Time appreciate. It thank, You Delegate Scott hacker From Wood.
County All, RIGHT. Tj two things can be true at
the same.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
Time.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Yep, ONE i agree with your premise that constituents shouldn't
be caught up in the middle of political cross. Fire
that political, disagreements you, know shouldn't prevent The North Star
Advocacy center from getting a grant for. Instance, however this
reminds me of, baseball the unwritten rules of, baseball right
(36:51):
when somebody breaks the unwritten rules of baseball and people
get all, Upset, well you can't do. That that's that's
just part of the. Game it's the unwritten rules of.
Baseball was it written Down? No did he break a?
Speaker 20 (37:02):
Rule?
Speaker 1 (37:03):
No well then. Sorry in this, CASE i get the. Argument,
look it goes through here and here and, here and
traditionally the governors have just signed off on it and
sent it. Through but he's got the authority to do
what he is, doing and to get upset because he's
using the authority that you've given. HIM i get Where
(37:24):
scott's coming. FROM i agree with the premise that constituents
shouldn't get caught. Up but the legislature gave the governor
the authority to sign off on. These if you didn't
want the office of the governor to have that, authority
you shouldn't have given it to.
Speaker 5 (37:36):
Him, well and he's within his power sure to your.
Point that's exactly, correct and that's WHY i, believe AND
i wrote in the. Piece now this is where it
obviously becomes. Commentary IF i were a, legislator which thankfully
many SAY i am, not, Ill i'd strip the office
out of. It why does the governor's office need to
be a part of? This if these dollars are hyper
(37:57):
focused on community local, needs as An alli said in the,
piece THEN i don't see that the governor's office needs
to play a role. Here take the governor's office out of.
It everybody gets their allocation BECAUSE i will say right or.
Wrong and, look folks could say that they don't like
the grant. Program you could say that this is a
waste of taxpayer. Dollars, completely that's a debate that we can. Have,
(38:21):
however the way it's set up, now everybody gets that
sixteen twenty whatever it. Is and, Look, dave you can
bank it. Up i'm told. Too so If Delegate wilson
doesn't want to use his allocation this year and you've
got something big and you want to bank two three
years of, allocations you can do that and then spend
forty five thousand in three years.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Whatever, right all these unspoken.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
Rules to your, point governor doesn't need to be in.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
It change the. Law we move. ON i think, WELL
i THINK i think we. AGREE i think we ended
up with the same. Ballpark weird different routes of getting,
there BUT i think we ended up. There what's the
unwritten rule of? Baseball you're thinking about? That and that's
WHAT i would, know all the unwritten rules of. BASEBALL
i love baseball in its most pure. Form the unwritten
rules drive me. Crazy write them. Down if you want
to write them, down write them. Down why are they?
Speaker 5 (39:07):
UNWRITTEN i guess because they were so unpopular that someone
didn't want to LIKE i, think oh and. TWO i
think it's except the little back somebody off the plate
On owen.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
Two but maybe that shouldn't be written. DOWN i don't
know unwritten rules of. Baseball, uh speaking of the unwritten
rules of. Baseball Jeff, jenkins big baseball. Guy he's going
to join us. Next but a lot of to catch
up on over the, weekend a violent and tragic weekend
across the. State Jeff jenkins will catch us up next

Speaker 1 (43:23):
Dave, well we've got this echo like we're somewhere in the.
Caverns there we go, there it's. Gone everybody, There, yeah we're.
Here operator. Error, sorry it. Happens it, Happens. Jeff let's
start In Kanawha county Where sheriff's deputies are investigating an
apparent murder. Suicide.
Speaker 10 (43:41):
Yeah this was Early saturday morning On Cavin, creek a
little community On Cavin creek Called, miami and a woman
called in and said her son was injured on the,
porch he'd been. Shot and deputies got there and found
the sun dead on the porch and adult son and
the father her husband in the yard dead and so
(44:04):
they were able to. Quickly they were able to determine
that that was a murder suicide and the father shooting
the sun and then shooting. Himself don't know a whole,
lot they are. Arguing we do know that deputies were
able to say at least that they think it was
fueled by. Alcohol it happened about one twenty in the
(44:26):
morning On saturday. Morning no names have been. Released the
deputies were doing a little some forensic work just to
determine if you, know the shooting happened somewhere else or
at least at close, range and then the father went
down into the. Yard if he's shouting from the, Yard
they were going to try to determine, THAT i think
a little, bit but again haven't released any. Names then
(44:49):
a few hours, later over In Morgan, county there was
a home burglary where a man broke into allegedly broke
into was identified as forty year Old Melvin, gallion and
there was a there was a woman and a child.
There there was some threatening done. There he had a
shotgun and police were. Called they arrived on the scene
(45:15):
the members of The Morgan County Sheriff's department and one
of the deputies identified is a, Deputy Bradley mitcham. Was
there were some. Shots the galleon allegedly fired his shotgun
and so the deputies kind of. Sprayed he was hit
four times as he was sprayed with the shotgun, blast
(45:38):
and none of those life, threatening. Fortunately fortunately one of
those was above the, EYE i, think and another in the,
hand one of the two of the four that hit.
Him but he was released a couple of hours later
from the. HOSPITAL i think he's going to have to
have some work on his left hand at a later.
Date the sheriff, says sheriff over there In Morgan county
and they were able actually to Take gallion into. Two
(46:00):
they did return fire and he was, injured but again not,
seriously and he was taken into custody and charged and
faces several charges easy in The Eastern Regional. Jail and
then there was also a hit and, run a deadly
hit and. Run this was down In Greenborough county ALONG
Us route sixty between in The hinz community there ON
(46:22):
Us route. Sixty and this happened Early sunday. MORNING a
woman was struck and. Killed and they don't have a
lot of. INFORMATION i, mean they do think it was
a twenty, Fifteen Ford Focus deputies. Do her name hasn't
been released, yet the lady who was struck and, killed
but they were asking for residents who live along that
(46:42):
stretch Of route sixty Between Angeine road And Hines if
you have a front facing a road facing surveillance, camera
you may be able to help police with some surveillance video.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
There it's a heck of a.
Speaker 10 (46:57):
Weekend jeff, Yeap, yes, yeah we got a lot. There
we're also getting some information guys about there's been an
inmate charged after a. DEATH i think the death was
back In may at The Western Regional, jail so there's
been an inmate. There we're trying to gather some more
information on, this but there's been an inmate now charged
with voluntary manslaughter in the death of another. Inmate so
(47:20):

Speaker 1 (55:55):
ME i would have never do such a.
Speaker 29 (55:57):
Thing get all the pointers you can.
Speaker 5 (56:01):
Take, Notes, hey any lesson that they're willing to, Give
i'm willing to.
Speaker 1 (56:04):
Take, steven you made the trip up to the conference this,
week and what's your take On Josh, holstein the twenty
three year old From Boone, county of being selected as
the NEXT gop Chair.
Speaker 29 (56:15):
Sure i've covered a number of these chairman elections for
The West Virginia Republican party and The Democratic party for that,
matter over my journalism career, fogged And i've made the.
Track i've sat through some W gop. Meetings some have
been fairly. Contentious this was not, SO.
Speaker 22 (56:35):
I.
Speaker 29 (56:35):
THINK i Think Josh, holstein the delegate From Boone county
had a decent amount of support both. Times now it
took two votes to get. There you had three. Candidates
you Had Wes, perry relatively new member of the, committee
it's only been on it since twenty twenty. Two moved
to the state in twenty, Twenty army veteran got out
(56:56):
in Eight and then you Had Michael Joy, george who
is definitely kind of an unknown entity from the Pocus
Honah Pocahontas county, area guy who's written some. Books, OTHERWISE
i don't REALLY i just didn't know that much about
him and nobody else, did and he had no involvement
(57:18):
with the commit. COMMITTEE i can tell you that committee
tends to pick from. Within it doesn't have to the.
Chairman according to their, bilaws they can pick whoever they
want for chairman for the most, part within, reason like
you can't pick somebody that is working as a current,
lobbyist there's a prohibition against. That but they tend to
pick from With And Josh holstein is young but also
(57:39):
somebody who has earned. It he's come up in a
heavily democratic county In Boone, COUNTY uh and helped build
a committee there in that. County and helped unseat a
fairly Entrenched democrat former sheriff of that. County so that's
a pretty big. Deal Uh so he's worked for, it
and he's worked within committee structure for a number of,
(58:01):
years so everybody was familiar with, him and he was
always on top of each round of. Voting SO i
think it was inevitable that it would probably go To Josh.
Speaker 5 (58:11):
Holstein growing up In Boom, COUNTY i remember a TIME
i think when we had Eleven republicans in the. COUNTY i,
mean it was that Heavily, democrat and he Has he's earned.
Speaker 14 (58:21):
A lot of.
Speaker 1 (58:21):
WINS i mean Over Rodney.
Speaker 5 (58:23):
Miller that was no small, thing well beloved former sheriff
in the, County so he's earned. It how much Did
justice coming on board with him so early make a
difference in that?
Speaker 1 (58:32):
Vote do you?
Speaker 22 (58:32):
THINK i think that.
Speaker 29 (58:34):
HELPED i also think it helped to some extent the,
least at least public. Facing Governor morrisey didn't really come
out and back. Anybody, now there are some whispers that
he was kind of leaning Towards West. PERRY i don't
know if that's. YEAH i don't know if that's true or,
Not but he kind of kept out of it as
far as publicly backing one person or the. Other AND
(58:55):
i Think Josh holstein and the, GOVERNOR i don't think
there's any type of bad. BLOCK i think there are
two people that can work together AND i think they're friendly.
Together so that's not going to be a bad thing
for the governor going.
Speaker 22 (59:07):
Forward but it's.
Speaker 29 (59:09):
One of those things where it doesn't hurt That Senator
justice got involved with, it BUT i also think he's
worked for. IT i Think Josh holstein really has worked for.
It and not only, that but he looked at the
past couple election. Cycles he's really kind of gotten involved
with election law as far as helping pass and introduce
bills dealing with election, law and you, can you, know
debate some of the things that he was trying to.
(59:30):
Change but he has an interest in, this so he
understands both you, know running committees and being involved. Committees
he understands the election laws going, forward AND i think
all that is, very, very very. Helpful SO i think
it's a combination Of, justice but ALSO i think he
had the respect of people in that.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
Room talking To Steven Allen, Adams capitol reporter and columnist
With Ogden, Newspapers, Steven i'm curious what you think will
be the challenge moving, forward because as you look at the,
Landscape democrats are not off the. Hook we're going to
talk more about you. Tomorrow But democrats at this point
In West virginia not much of a threat to take
(01:00:11):
not really any threat really to take majorities in The
senate or The. House there may be some seats that
they can, gain but not really a. Threat the challenge
seems to be getting all the factions within your own.
Party For Josh, holstein pulling or pushing or, whatever singing
on the same, him from the same, book maybe getting
on the same. Page that's going to be the. Challenge
(01:00:33):
do you focus on economic, development job, growth those things
we talk about all the. Time do you continue to
fight the culture. Wars everybody's priority is their, priority, Obviously,
stephen but getting everybody on the same page and coming
up with some sort of uniform platform is going to
be a challenge when you have so many different factions
within the super majority.
Speaker 9 (01:00:54):
Party.
Speaker 29 (01:00:54):
NOW i think that's absolutely. CORRECT i think That Josh
holstein definitely recognizes. THAT i think part of this platform
was actually trying to hold more sort of informal meetings
or gatherings with committee members across the state to try
the foster some relationships and to try to bring everybody
back into that big tent that always used to get
(01:01:17):
talked about with The Republican. Party because you, know nature
of boars a, vacuum and with such a Small democratic,
minority both in voter registration now with elected, members particularly
in the, Legislature republicans are fighting amongst. Themselves you saw
it definitely in The State center and you definitely see
it to some extent in The house Of delegates as.
WELL i think something has to happen to bring those factions.
(01:01:40):
Together BUT i think the other big challenge going into
particularly twenty twenty six is the fact that they got
to get the word out to unaffiliated voters that if
you are interested in voting in The republican primary going,
forward you've got to make that switch To. Republican, now
voter registration For republicans keeps going, up voter registration For
democrats keeps going, down but also on affiliates do keep going.
Speaker 1 (01:02:04):
Up so they got a two thousand month of a.
Speaker 29 (01:02:06):
Month, yeah so they got to reverse that trend to
get that education campaign out. There, now there were whispers
that there was going to be an attempt to try
to reverse course on. That there was procedural hurdles with
the bylaws that really prevented, that so that did not.
Happen BUT i can also see a scenario by the
time you get to their winter, meeting which will be
sometimes at the beginning of twenty twenty, six they do
(01:02:27):
have time to perhaps change course on. THAT i don't
know if they, will but we'll see when they get.
Closer but they. Don't they got to get an education
campaign out, there AND i Think Josh holstein's interested in doing.
Speaker 5 (01:02:39):
That who wins inside the party if you open it
back up and who loses if you open it back?
Speaker 29 (01:02:45):
Up, boy that's a good question because a lot of
your Voters Southern West virginia is a good, example and
you are From Boone. County you're talking about people that
do lean conservative but have grand parents alive or dead
that have probably told them at one point that you
switch and put an our by your, Name i'll roll
(01:03:06):
over in my. Grave so they're Not they're on the same,
team but they don't want to be A republican yet
and that's where it's going to hurt, you especially in those. Races,
now for state right, races maybe that doesn't. Matter populations
Other West virginia is kind of. Shrinking state wide population shrinking,
(01:03:26):
too maybe that doesn't hurt.
Speaker 22 (01:03:27):
You but if you're talking about individual.
Speaker 29 (01:03:29):
Races Like house Of delegates races or even state center,
regents that could be. Harmful SO i think those are
kind of the challenges that you have to think about
going forward in this and, education, education. Education they gotta
get the word out if they're going to do. This
but what the repercussions, ARE i don't. Know we might
(01:03:50):
have to wait and see what happens in twenty twenty
six and maybe they'll take action after. That but it
Was republicans who led the charge on allowing on affiliateds
in their elections decades. Ago they needed them and that's
what largely had helped didn't get to where they're at.
Speaker 22 (01:04:04):
Now so.
Speaker 29 (01:04:07):
Do you have a situation where there's more moderates or
what is a? Moderate what is a? Conservative? Now you,
KNOW i would have been TOLD i was a conservative
a few years ago based on my beliefs at that.
Point NOW i would be probably called a RHINO i
don't feel LIKE i changed my, beliefs but still you've
got those factions you got to think. About so we'll
have to See.
Speaker 1 (01:04:25):
Steven Allen adams joining us a capital reporter and columnist
For Ogden. Newspapers, steven you drew inspiration for your notebook
in today's edition from your long lost uncle eight times. Removed,
no not actually a blood connection To John, adams but
you brought In John adams as you talked about the
current controversy with vaccines and. Exemptions take it from.
Speaker 29 (01:04:48):
There, sure, WELL i Mean Governor morrissey obviously is continuing
to kind of talk kind of tough about you, know
we need to have religious, EXEMPTIONS i, mean and we
need to have religious liberties. Protected he said this AT
thevgap summer meeting when he spoke he thinks this is
the email ought to be part of the platform of
The State Republican party ensure that these protections are. Entrenched
(01:05:13):
but you've got a situation here where instead of a,
law which you, know they attempted to pass during the
legislative session that would have allowed some form of a
religious exemption to the compulsory school wage vaccine law that didn't.
Happen now we Have morrissey's executive quarterback In, january which
is now what we're still operating. Under but now you
got all these situations where you got The Knell county
(01:05:34):
case at THE acl you tried to bring that got
thrown out for technical, reasons WHICH i don't know how
they let a rookie mistake like that happened in are,
filing But i'm not their.
Speaker 22 (01:05:43):
Attorney now you've got The Rawley county, case.
Speaker 29 (01:05:45):
Which is an interesting case from the parents trying to
stop the school systems from keeping their kids out to
have their religious. Exemptions but that only affects three. Families
so you got a, situation especially state school board saying,
well you, know the counties keep you, know following the
current state law in that situation where your state board
(01:06:07):
Of education could be dragged into fifty five different courtrooms
depending but it's. Crazy we have no clarity right, now
and we don't have that because we're operating under an executive.
ORDER i don't think that's what mores he could have possibly.
Wanted if it, was he wouldn't have tried to have
a law or a bill rather introduced on his. Behalf
we got to get to a law of some. Sort
(01:06:28):
whether that happens in a special, SESSION i wouldn't think
so based on the, factions but definitely a law is
going to be better in this case than what we
have right, now because right now we just have.
Speaker 5 (01:06:37):
Confusion if you are politically motivated on this. Issue so
let's take to these parents off the hook for a,
second and you're really politically driven by this. Argument we
were talking On friday AND i raised the, point do
you really want to win at a circuit court? LEVEL
i think you want this to go to The State Supreme,
court not only because of the effect that we all
(01:07:00):
have In West, virginia but we have that little case
in The Northern. District yet The Fourth circuit kicked. Back
they wanted the state courts to rule in that goes
to The Fourth circuit And workman gets. OVERTURNED i, mean
now you are talking over arching. Effect would you agree
or disagree with that?
Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
Strategy?
Speaker 29 (01:07:16):
Oh, NO i completely agree if that's a. Strategy of,
course we don't know what The State board is going to,
do BUT i guessingly will appeal to The State Supreme
court to get ruling on. That as to whether the
religious protection law that was passing twenty twenty, three whether
that opens the door for basically an automatic religious exception on.
That we know that there ARE Us Supreme court cases
(01:07:39):
dealing with. VACCINATIONS i think the most famous ones nineteen oh.
Five it says that there is you can't use religion
to get arount a vaccine. Mandate so this has been,
adjudicated BUT i know these law of the parties want
to see it. Readjudicated they think there might be a
change sort of similar to what happened With Rowy wait
(01:08:00):
when they came back and you, know basically overturned that
Earlier Supreme court decision that could happen in this. CASE
i don't. Know that's pretty well. Precedented so you've got
a situation where you really got to have that. Law,
otherwise do we want the courts really kind of saying
what this, is what this, isn't and do we want
(01:08:20):
to take the chance maybe they overturn some of the
stuff that would allow for like a religious exemption in this,
Case but also they could just go by the earlier
precedents and leave everything, alone and then you're still going
to need a.
Speaker 1 (01:08:33):

Station President trump continues his overseas, trip and earlier a
(01:12:21):
new trade deal between THE us and The European union
was Announced Fox News. Radios Jonathan savage joins us with
the Lightest, Jonathan good. Morning what's this trade? Deal, yeah good.
Speaker 33 (01:12:31):
Morning it is a deal which imposes a fifteen percent
baseline tariff on almost All European union goods heading to
The United. States it's much higher than the tariff rai
Before President trump came into, office about two and a half,
percent but it is much lower than the thirty percent
reciprocal tariff that he had. Threatened so it's somewhere in
(01:12:52):
the middle for THE eu and not as bad as
it could have, been but not particularly good. Either But
President trump says it's a great deal for The United,
states partly because of the money coming in from those,
tariffs partly because THE eu is promised to make seven
hundred and fifty billion dollars in strategic purchases And european
companies are to invest six hundred billion dollars in THE.
Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
Us what does THE eu get out of the.
Speaker 33 (01:13:16):
Deal it's very hard to see what they get out
of the deal compared to how things were. Before what they,
get a suppose is they don't get a trade war
with The United. States that's important For. Europe they get,
predictability they get. Certainty but in the words of one,
analyst those who expect a hurricane are grateful for a.
(01:13:39):
Storm not everyone as, grateful. Though The Prime minister Of
france says it's a somber day when an alliance of
free people's resigns itself to, submission And Hungary's prime minister
sums up the negotiations by, Saying Donald trump eight orschall
Of Wonder lion for. Breakfast she's the chief negotiator of
The president of THE Eu, Commission, Jonathan.
Speaker 1 (01:14:01):
Are there any exemptions to those, tariffs those fifteen percent?
Speaker 33 (01:14:04):
Tariffs, yeah there are some exemptions zero for zero tariffs
on all aircraft and their, components some, chemicals some generic,
drugs some equipment and agricultural. Products and the idea is
that they will they will add more products to this
list of zero tariff. EXCHANGES i things like. Alcohol that's
(01:14:25):
to be figured out a little bit. Later that's important
for an awful lot Of european countries such As france
and The.
Speaker 5 (01:14:31):
Netherlands, jonathan relative of the, deal is it fair to
say this is the biggest Deal trump has struck when
it comes to trade with the?
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
Counterparty, YEAH i think it probably.
Speaker 33 (01:14:40):
Is The European union is single biggest trading partner with
The United. States it represents twenty seven countries who trade
and negotiate as a single. Block so getting this deal
over the line represents an awful lot ninety billion dollars
in tariff money on its own going INTO us government
(01:15:00):
offers if you look at what the trade figures were last.
Year so it's certainly worth an awful, lot not just
to The, treasury but To american companies as, well who
of course do an awful lot of business across The.
Speaker 1 (01:15:10):
Atlantic talking With Fox News Radios Jonathan, Savage Jonathan, well
actually during our show here saw The president was meeting
With british The British Prime. Minister what was? Said what
was talked about in that.
Speaker 33 (01:15:21):
Meeting they talked a little bit about, TRADE i, think
BUT i think one of the major focuses Was Gaza Cure.
Starmer The British Prime minister wanted to really PRESSURE i,
suppose On Donald trump to push for a ceasefire deal For,
gaza to push for a hostage release deal and crucially
(01:15:44):
to push to get more aid in For, palestinians who
The Day kingdom and many other countries believe are in
an absolutely horrific situation in terms of, food medicine safety in.
General so getting more aid Into gaza was one of
the crucial issues for THE Uk Prime, minister who described
(01:16:07):
images of starvation as.
Speaker 1 (01:16:09):
Intolerable Fox News Radio Jonathan, Savage, jonathan thank you for the.
UPDATE i appreciate.
Speaker 34 (01:16:14):
It thank.
Speaker 1 (01:16:15):
You three h Four, talk three h. Four the text, line,
guys it's a major story when a twenty three year
old is elected party. Chairman we've only got about sixty seconds, HERE.
Tj i've gone back and forth on how big of
a story that. Is it is a big. Story he's twenty.
THREE i mean it as. WELL i just got married
(01:16:35):
at twenty. Three BUT i don't know THAT i could
have led any SO i don't THINK i could do it, TODAY,
tj lead any political. Party it is a big. STORY
i just don't know how big of a part of
that story it is.

Speaker 34 (01:28:18):
Hey good morning. Guys thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (01:28:19):
ON i appreciate you coming. On what was the key
to the victory over the? Weekend, OOH a great.
Speaker 34 (01:28:25):
QUESTION i would say that mental processes and trying to
stay in the moment was probably the best part of my.
Game physically hitting the ball and. EVERYTHING i wasn't quite
at my, best just trying to stay in the, moment
and that's what was my key to the.
Speaker 5 (01:28:41):
Victory your, best but it was good enough to, Win.
CHRISTIAN i mean great rounds of golf of, seventy sixty
six and sixty. Nine let's talk about that round, one
the one where you did have a little. Trouble he
double bogeed on the par three. Seventeen walk us through
what happened right?
Speaker 34 (01:28:55):
There, well flag was on the left, side next to
the bunker on a, downslope and really the only place
we couldn't.
Speaker 9 (01:29:03):
Hit it was.
Speaker 34 (01:29:03):
Left of, COURSE i hit it left gotten some gnarly.
Rough anytime you have to chip twice on a, hole
it's not. GOOD i had a six footer for, bogie
hit a perfect, putt ran it right into the right
lip and it didn't go. In so that's.
Speaker 1 (01:29:17):
Golf this was your Fourth West Virginia, open and any
one of them stick out more than another Fourth West
Virginia open, CHAMPIONSHIP i should say any one of them
stick out more than another.
Speaker 34 (01:29:28):
Man i'll tell, you, well two of them IF i can,
go IF i can elaborate a little. Bit SO i
won in twenty fifteen At Berry Hills Country, club which
at the TIME i was a professional and stationed out of,
there so that was a home, game and then obviously this.
ONE i now live In hurk In West virginia and
(01:29:51):
a member Of Sleepy, hollow So i've really won two home,
games which you, know those both meet a lot whenever
you have the crowd behind, you friends and family and
all that good.
Speaker 5 (01:30:00):
Stuff, CHRISTIAN i didn't check With Jimmy, harrison the, Pro
but you've got the course record At, sleepy don't.
Speaker 34 (01:30:06):
You, uh, Yeah i've got.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
It.
Speaker 34 (01:30:08):
YEAH i shot sixty last, year played pretty good that.
Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
Day sixty sixty on a par what seventy? Two, yeah
when did you, Realize christian you were pretty?
Speaker 34 (01:30:24):
Good, well that's a hard question coming from a guy
that's pretty. Confident, USUALLY i would say early on in
the it was called The Top Play Junior. Quarterbacks then
it's now The Callaway Junior, tourist sanctioned by THE, wvza
and it's a good way to get juniors into. Golf
(01:30:45):
my first year out, THERE i won a couple of,
times AND i had only been playing golf for a
couple of, years and at that POINT i was, like
you know, what MAYBE i can MAYBE i can do.
Speaker 5 (01:30:54):
SOMETHING i want to go back to round one. NUMBER
i believe that's the number one handicap from The Championship. Proteas,
there you birdied that whole walk us through that one.
Speaker 34 (01:31:10):
Kind of. NON i mean three great golf. Shots, honestly
it's a tight t ball and you have to fit
it within a gap in the trees off the tee
and then the actual fair way over has a tree.
Overhanging SO i hit a GREAT t ball little fade
down the, middle had hit it pretty long and had
a pitching wedge in that green is super sloped and
(01:31:32):
very very. SKINNY i left it under the, hole which
is the only place you can really put from.
Speaker 9 (01:31:37):
Him be.
Speaker 34 (01:31:37):
AGGRESSIVE i had about twelve feet up the hill and
ran it right in the middle and it was a
good momentum.
Speaker 1 (01:31:43):
Starter christian brand is joining. Us he won The West
Virginia open over the weekend shot and eleven under two
strokes better Than Ryan bilby And Ken hess who were following.
Behind all, right, now be, Honest, christian be honest with
it's just us talking. Here how much if you had
to put a percentage on, it how much is? Skill
(01:32:04):
how much is just luck that the ball hits where
you want it to, go or How obviously there's skill,
Involved but what's the percentage of luck involved in the
game of?
Speaker 34 (01:32:14):
Golf and that's another hard, question great. Question there's definitely luck.
Involved the WAY i like to look at, it, Though
i'll just give you my, PERSPECTIVE i don't think there's a.
Percentage but the longer the golf, tournament the more it evens.
Out so if you can remember that you know you
get a bad break on day, one and that it's
(01:32:34):
a three day, tournament you're gonna get a good break moving,
forward and then a seventy two hole tournament like The
West Virginia. AMETER i just continue to, think, like, hey,
listen you're not getting the breaks right, now but they
will even. Out it's just a law of.
Speaker 5 (01:32:49):
Percentages talk to us about the importance of the. GAME
i know you're passionate about young. People we see young
people At sleepy talk about getting young people into this
great game of, golf even if they happen to be
like me and they're pretty crappy.
Speaker 34 (01:33:06):
Golfers SO i love trying to give back, to you,
know the youth In West. VIRGINIA i think golf In
West virginia needs kickstarted. Constantly just because of our low,
population we don't have a lot of golf. Courses THE
wvga does a great, job BUT i do things like
(01:33:27):
the last couple of years at The West Virginia, AMETER
i take a couple of rising, juniors maybe first time
guys in The West Virginia, ameter AND i play the
practice round with them and just you, know shoot the
crap with, them try to answer some, questions show them
a couple of things That i've learned over the. Years
AND i try to do that At Sleepy, hollow a lot,
too and we've got a lot of great juniors. There
(01:33:49):
so IF i see somebody on the, Range i'm the
first guy to give them a tip here or, there
or here's What i'm, seeing or here's a way to
think about, it and hopefully it.
Speaker 1 (01:33:59):
Helps what got you, Started? Christian what inspired you?
Speaker 34 (01:34:05):
SOCIALLY i Just i'm a big social guy and my.
Friends in middle, SCHOOL i was thirteen years, old my
Buddy Robert gresham wanted to go play golf AND i
didn't know what golf. Was tiger had just won The,
masters and so we went out To Cato park and
my dad tells the story of the best that we
went out. THERE i played nine holes and you, know
(01:34:28):
it was fun and, everything and it was so. Hard
it was so much harder than the other. SPORTS i
went to my dad the next day AND i was,
like we got to go and get golf clubs. Now
and that's just kind of how it.
Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
Started what's your golf?
Speaker 1 (01:34:40):
Future, no go, Ahead, Dave, sorry, WELL i was just
going to point out you mentioned right That tiger had
just won The. Masters you're The tiger, Generation. Christian you
saw him as a, Kid you were a kid seeing
him in His prime that had to have had an.
Speaker 34 (01:34:52):
Influence oh, yeah, YEAH i mean it was, cool like
all Of beden golf was.
Speaker 20 (01:34:56):
Cool you.
Speaker 34 (01:34:57):
KNOW i grew up thinking THAT i was going to
be you, Know mark McGuire or you, know pick AN nba.
Player those were my two. Sports and then all of a,
sudden here's this guy that hits it, forever looks, cool
fist pumps and he's. Dominating, well, well, now all of a,
sudden my mind shifts. TOO i want to be that.
Speaker 1 (01:35:16):
Guy what's your future in this? Game what do you
want to?
Speaker 34 (01:35:20):
DO i have a lot of ASPIRATIONS i. HAVE i
have one main, goal and you, Know i'll keep that to,
myself BUT i work hard on it every day and,
uh you, know hopefully hopefully it comes to. Fruition it's
a pretty lofty, one BUT i want to still complete
compete nationally LIKE i did last year at THE Us.
(01:35:42):
AMATEUR i have THE Us Mid amateur this year coming,
up AND i, think, UH i Think i've got a
strong shot at a couple of huge.
Speaker 1 (01:35:49):
Titles where's the trophy right? Now by the, Way.
Speaker 34 (01:35:53):
Oh, well, uh truth be. Told, UH i am on,

home just sitting there with the low am and the winner's.
Speaker 1 (01:36:06):
Trophy do you play golf on? Vacation?
Speaker 34 (01:36:09):

Clubs so this is like just hanging out with my
son at the, pool you, know with my wife and
just enjoy.
Speaker 1 (01:36:19):
Myself that's, smart young, Man that's very smart on your.
Speaker 34 (01:36:23):
Part, YEAH i have. To i'm i joke. Around i'm
so intense THAT i have to put like self imposed
sanctions on, myself, like, Okay, christian you are not allowed
to think about golf or play, golf hit golf all
anything like that for this amount of, time and then
it refreshes.
Speaker 5 (01:36:40):
ME i have one final question for you on my.
Side is it true one of the reasons you stopped
walking On Tyler way in the evenings up the hill
is because you had to look at this neighbor, yours
out in the front yard trying to swing a club
and you just couldn't stand the sight of it.
Speaker 34 (01:36:54):
Anymore you can only throw up in your mouth so many.
Times and you, know OLD. Tj, NO I i Missed
Tyler way and HAVING tj as a. Neighbor he's another.
GUY i was telling my. Wife he loves golf more than.
ANYTHING i see it WHENEVER i go to the. Range
