Speaker 1 (00:09):
Best sets, the one too, ground ball, the first base.
This will do it, torkeleten waves them off, makes the play.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Tigers win the wild court.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
It's on to the division stories did Seattle? Let the
celebration begin. What a bash in Cleveland yesterday and it's
onto Seattle for the Detroit Tigers. And those of you
who were worried, remember the postseason is a new season.
And you know, at the beginning of the season, if
(00:38):
you'd said, well, I'd like to make the Tigers get
to the postseason and win the first round, I'll take that.
And even though they had a big, big lead and
they squandered it in the last month of the regular season,
here we are and the Yankees have advanced and the
Cubs of advanced. So those of you listening in West
Michigan where Cubs fans, you've got a reason to celebrate too.
(01:00):
So congratulations, Yes, baseball, what are you telling me? It's
football season? I know, I know, I know, I know.
MPs with you through the AT and T microphones and
in Follerville today they're going to be celebrating baseball. Thanks
to Consumers Energy and Brian Wheeler, who's a media relations
specialist and it's going to be a Tiger of yesteryear,
(01:25):
a Hall of Famer from yesteryear, who will take center
stage today. Brian Wheeler, welcome back to the program.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, good morning to you and go Tigers.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
You are now stepping up to the plate. And Consumers is,
if you'll pardon the pun, in Follerville, what's the skinny?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, well, you know, baseball is a game of history.
I think any real fan knows. You go back to
Bay Ruth Ty Cobb, all the greats. Michigan has a
great former Detroit Tiger named Charlie Geringer. And if that
name's not familiar, you know he played about twenty years
for the Tigers the twenties, thirties and forties, one of
the best second basement of all time, a Hall of Famer,
(02:03):
and he grew up in Fowlerville, which is in Livingston County.
So this afternoon, the community is going to be unveiling
a mural in the community that the Consumer's Energy Foundation
helped the fund but to celebrate their hometown hero, if
you want to call it that way, but the Hall
of Famer, his picture. The mural's on display as of
this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
That is very super cool. And we appreciate that very much.
And you know, I was just listening to some audio
yesterday from Rich Eisen who was talking about another Charlie,
and that is Charlie Sheen, who's been making the rounds
now because there's a TV show about him. And I
guess he's got a book out too, and he loves baseball.
Of course, he was in the movie Major League, and
he was telling Rich Eisen that he once bought an
(02:46):
entire section of the outfield because he wanted so badly
to catch a home run ball and it involved the Tigers.
Here's what he said, So, if you were still buying
out an entire familiation, you would do that for?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Which player? Right now? Would you do that for?
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Right now?
Speaker 3 (03:04):
If you could buy out? Because you did do.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
That, right I did that? Yeah, that was like April
of ninety six.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Who did you do this for?
Speaker 1 (03:11):
I did it for Cecil Fielder.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yes, okay, he wanted to catch a Cecil Fielder home
run ball so bad that he bought every ticket and
he went out there with his glove and he waited
and he waited, and I thought it was just a
sort of a super cool story. Charlie to Charlie.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah. You know, baseball is such a such a game.
It's such a quirky game, and you know, the people
who are passionate about it do things like that. And
you know, I grew up as a baseball fan. I'm
a New Englander by birth, so I'm a Boston Red
Sox fan. We lockt yesterday, so yeah, but I love
the Tigers, and you know, you just think about I
remember the name Charlie Garringer growing up, and that sort
(03:55):
of looks in the Hall of Fame books or whatever,
and you know, phenomenal, just of a different generation in
a different era. I'm sure people don't necessarily know the name,
but you know, if you ever have an opportunity to
be traveling through Livingston County or the village of Falerville,
you know, I think less than three thousand people live there,
but there are family members of his who are still local.
(04:16):
His history and his contributions to not for nothing, a
Tiger's team that won the World Series in nineteen thirty five,
all of that celebrated, and you know, it's a great
Michigan success story as well.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
You have similar events, although not baseball related, in places
like Watson Township, and Manistee this year.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yeah, we have what our Concerners Energie Foundation did with
Falerville and other communities. We have an annual contest called
put Your Town on the Map. We talk about places
like Falerville that have small populations. It's a contest to
find local communities with big ideas, small towns that really
want to put themselves on the map for tourism travel
celebrating Michigan. We were excited that Falerville won first place
(04:59):
in the in the contest this year and now that
we can be here today celebrating the mural. But there's
other great projects and efforts that go on around the state.
We've been doing this for a few years Consumers Energy.
As you know, we're a Michigan company, so we love
to celebrate.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Michigan Seven Generations Park and Watson Township and the voices
of Manistee Initiative, all places We can be heard on
the radio of course, on radio stations or through streaming
audio and podcasting at amibig show dot com. So somebody today,
In fact, it's not too far from where Tony Kuppert lives.
(05:33):
You could go and see this event.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, at two o'clock this afternoon. If Tony can drop by.
That would be a treat. There'll be folks from the village,
from the community, from Consumers Energy, and also from Charlie Gerringer's.
So you know, I'm excited to meet hopefully some relatives
and just talk about the you know there, I'm going
to guess grandfather or even great grandfather's contributions to Tiger's
(05:58):
lore and what great time the Troit. The Troit Tiger's
mascot pause is going to be there. And you know
it's a little bit of a lyft that the Tigers
won in advanced yesterday. We're right in between playoff games here,
so it's a celebration. Uh. You know, what a great
time of year?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Are you going to bring your glove and have a catch?
Speaker 2 (06:17):
I should put my I think my wife's got a
Tiger's jersey. Maybe I should steal it for the day.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Not bad.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
When's the last time you went to a game at Fenway?
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Oh? Good question. Three years ago. Got to to visit
the top of the Green Monster had some great seats. Otherwise,
for the game, the Red Sox lost them. They lost yesterday.
This is a bad team I see developing here. But
I'll tell you The Tigers are my personal second favorite team.
And you know it's great. I mean there, they're going
to beat the Mariners in three. That's that's my bold prediction.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Here. Wow, that's great. We're going to take that to
the bank. Uh. It is Fowlerville at two o'clock today
as the Livingston County Community on veil a mural for
Detroit Tiger Charlie Geringer and of course you could meet
Brian Wheeler there too. Look for the fella and the
(07:07):
Tiger jersey and thank him for what Consumer's energy does
for our state and for us every single day. It's
Michael Patrick Shields powered by consumers through the AT and
T microphones. More sports coming next with Tony Cuthberts.
