Speaker 1 (00:26):
May the sunshine warm upon your face. Typical Irish breeding,
but in moderation. Right, That's what we've been told. And
then the other big advice was always don't forget to
wear your sunscreen. Doctor John Wycoff at the Wycoff Wellness
Center is with me, Michael Patrick Shields. You can find
them at Wycoff Wellness dot com w y co O

(00:49):
f F or stop in there. He's on Michigan Avenue,
just a little east of one twenty seven. He's got
a shop and of course his be a patient or
just shopping. Get to know him and find out why
he's been saying for some time now careful with those
sunscreen products, and now there's some evidence to prove he

(01:11):
was right. Doctor Wykoff, welcome back to the airwaves.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Goodbrning, Michael, thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Federal officials are warning Americans to avoid certain types of sunscreens.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Well, there's been a couple of different reports over the
last few years on this issue. One that I've been
talking about for some time, and the concern about the
repeated application of certain chemicals that may produce negative side effects,
including cancer and people that use a lot of sunblock.
So I think this is one of these issues that
we have to appreciate that sun is good for you.

(01:45):
It has a lot of health benefits. Too much sun
may damage the skin, but maybe we have to learn
how to use the sun in a reasonable level to
optimize our health and not cause damage for other health issues.
But some block may not be the answer that we've
been promised it was.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Well, which is worse putting on the sunblock or not
wearing it?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
You know, that's a great question one to be further delineated.
But I think we just we take for granted chemicals
use in this country almost just don't even question it,
And I think we have to appreciate that many people
struggle to detoxify chemicals, and really the old added anything

(02:31):
you'd put on your skin you should be able to swallow.
If you can do that, it's safe, and most of
these things you're not going to swallow or want to swallow.
So I do think there's caution with all skin products
that the consumer should be better educated, take more time
and research, and make really good choices with regards to

(02:54):
anything that goes inside your body or on your body.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
The Food and Drug Admustration has sent warning letters to
companies including one called supergoop over sunscreen products that are
sold in a whipped or a moose or a phae form,
and according to the agency, those products haven't been approved
by the FDA and they may not be effective.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
I guess a whole other issue. Either the chemicals are
damaging or if you're not getting the sun block that
they're advertising. Both legitimate points, and I think again it
gets sound to the consumer using caution picking up products
that they feel is safe to use and will be
helpful to them to avoid other.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Issues under current regulations. Oils, lotions, creams, gels, butters, pastes, ointments,
and sticks are the only form of sunscreen that are
considered to be safe and effective, and you're saying maybe
over use of those could be unsafe.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I don't. My own personal bias is I just don't
use them because I'm just not sure. So I try
to be careful with my sun exposure when I go
to the beach, I'm out in the sun, I try
to wear a light cover up, wear a cap. You know,
there's always going to be some sun exposure, and someone
is good, but getting to the point of burning your skin.

(04:20):
And everyone's skin's different. Everybody's complexion, the amount of pigment berries.
Some people just burn easily. I don't. I have a
little bit of an holive complexion, so that helps. But
you do need to be aware of how your skin
cans or doesn't can or burns in the sun, and
just use some common sense. If you're going to the beach,

(04:43):
you know, get a half hour exposure and then either
get in the water, put on a sunshirt, put on
a cap, and sit in a shade under the umbrella
for the rest of the day.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
You know, I've seen you on the boat in that hat.
It's like a like a Safari hat kind of with
a big brim around it. And you mentioned a sun shirt.
What is that?

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Those are a breathable fabric shirt that air and water
will go through real easily. You prevent the sun exposure
if they're not warm. They're very thin. There are a
fabric dissigned to breathe and be worn in the sun.
You see a lot of fishermen wear this from Florida,
and there are a lot of places in Michigan to
carry them to.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
A mysterious visitor from the East is coming back to Michigan.

Speaker 2 (05:31):

tongue analysis expert world renowned has written and published books

approach and other than just taking medications and such. It's
a great time, a great interesting evaluation. I can call

Speaker 1 (06:46):
We talk about the sun gives vitamin D. Right, do
we get enough of vitamin D where we don't need
to take it in the pill form or what do
you recommend in terms of navigating the world of vitamins
and supplements.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Sure, well, vitamin D accelerates the conversion of vitamin D
from vitamin D two to D three inactive to active form.
It doesn't really give you vitamin D. It helps your
skin produce the active form of vitamin D. But it's
hard to get enough vitamin D in your diet or
with sun, even if you're in Florida. It's hard. Even

(07:24):
in Florida in the summer, you go from air conditioner
and air conditioner. You don't go out to sit in
the ninety five degree temperatures. So and we just don't
get enough direct sun exposure in Michigan due to the
climate change angle the sun. So for an average adult,
we recommend five thousand. I use a vitamin D three
daily US for a two hundred pound adult. The dose

(07:46):
should be guided by blood testing and even children. I
put my grandkids on vitamin D three the day they
were born. And you can get vitamin D and drops
formed and your doctor can help you with the appropriate
dosing for a child of any age or a younger adult.
So very helpful. One of the easiest, simplest and least

(08:07):
expensive things you can do to optimize your health. And
you can be in today with the help of Wycoff Wellness.

ever wondered why health insurance costs seem to keep going up?

(09:03):
I was doing some research online and I stumbled upon
some surprising information on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's
Websitemibluedaily dot com slash Affordability. I was surprised to learn
that the cost Blue Cross pays for prescription drugs rose
by a staggering fifteen percent last year. Fifteen percent. That's
five times higher than inflation. It's no wonder healthcare costs

(09:26):
or a concern for so many of us. That's why
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is working hard to
help all of us better understand the factors driving up
healthcare costs and sharing what they are doing is a
business to address it. Because Blue Cross knows that healthcare
is personal, it needs to work for everyone, and affordability matters.
So I encourage you to take a minute and check
OUTMI blue Daily dot com slash affordability and get informed.

(09:50):
You'll be glad you did. It's eye opening information that
can help everyone better understand the complexities of the healthcare
system and its impact on your health insurance costs. I've
