Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthberts.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lansing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Michael Patrick Shields, I've got it written down right here.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
If you do, no one have a good time, and
you must have a good show with all the commercial Shoot, guys,
it's first.

Speaker 5 (00:43):
I might heard you, and you sound great.

Speaker 6 (00:46):
It's like an old friend of mine once said, it's
not the money, it's the amount.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
Michael Patrick Shields is on the air.

Speaker 6 (00:53):
Good morning world.

Speaker 7 (00:55):
It was a priceless day in August, all those years
ago that I went to work in the Fisher Building
in downtown Detroit, and having served as a producer starting
on weekend overnights and working my way all the way
through the lineup through the Jimmy Launces and the Joel
Alexanders and the Frank Beckmans and the Kevin Joyces that

(01:21):
finally they said you're going to be the producer for J. P. McCarthy.
And that's a story into itself. But JP was a
legend and is in the Radio Hall of Fame and
was a Marconi Award winner as number one for thirty years.
And imagine a young guy in his mid twenties suddenly
has the helm working for a man who was an institution.

(01:47):
And I was nervous as a cat's and it was
a big, big deal behind the glass at the man
the other side of the glass was myself and Cliff Coleman,
the board operator, and I wondered, you know, what would
this be like? And so the morning started and the
show started, and this music came on and I said

(02:07):
to the board operator, he's not here. It's don't worry,
you'll see And the theme song was playing and there
was no host. We're twenty two stories above downtown Detroit,
Son is not quite starting to come up yet. And
as this theme song plays, I hear a click and

(02:27):
the man called J. P. McCarthy drove his Cadillac from
Bloomfield Hills down the lodge, into the parking garage and
the bowels of the Fisher Building. Walked through that glorious building,
went up to twenty two story elevator, came into the lobby,
walked into his studio, threw his coat on the chair,

(02:51):
sat down, put his glasses on, took a sip of
the coffee I had waiting for him, put his headphones on,
took one peek at the headline of the newspaper, pushed
the microphone button and said, good morning world.

Speaker 8 (03:10):
But good morning.

Speaker 6 (03:11):
World or ohio guzeimus from our studios here in the
Okra Hotel in central Tokyo. Welcome to day two of
our Japanese sojourn. Mercy mersi monsieur. Good morning world from
the Celon Automobile a La Park Day exposition that's the
Paris Auto Show. Well, good morning world, and a very

(03:33):
pleasant Monday to you from the center court here at
the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and Wimbledon, England,
just about twenty miles or so outside of London. Well,
good morning world, and a very pleasant Friday to you.
It's the fourth of May and it is the day
before the Kentucky Derby nineteen ninety. We are here on

(03:54):
the backstretch of historic Churchill Downs that twinspired with so
much history.

Speaker 8 (04:01):
Well dobray outre world.

Speaker 6 (04:03):
Good morning from our studios in the Rascia Hotel here
in the shadow of the Kremlin in downtown Moscow. I'm
JP McCarthy and always have been here.

Speaker 9 (04:12):
At the Tiger Stadium for the nineteen ninety one season opener,
and I want you to know this. It is the
best season opener in terms of the weather I have
ever seen. It's a little cloudy, but there's lots of
blue up there, and it's actually muggy.

Speaker 10 (04:26):
Happy.

Speaker 6 (04:27):
Saint Patrick's Day nineteen eighty seven, everybody, We have a
very good group here already in the lobby of the
WJR studios here in the twenty first floor. Top of
the morning to you. We are at the Pegasus celebrating
Saint Patrick's Day a couple of days early this year
for all the obvious reasons. It's really Sunday. We have
a good early group on hand, several real irishmen and

(04:51):
several who would be on this day when we're going
to celebrate for the next couple of hours, the wearing
of the Green Good morning, world, and a very pleasant Monday.
You it's Groundhog's Day, February two, nineteen eighty seven, and
I can't believe it, but we are sitting here in Fremantle, Australia,
on the west coast of Australia, some twelve miles from Perth,

(05:13):
right by the beautiful blue Indian Ocean. As you must
know by now, it's the side of the America's Cup Races,
which have taken a definite United States turn as of today.
Some details on what just happened on the course a
few hours ago is we make our way through the morning.

Speaker 7 (05:30):
And as we made our way through that morning, I
was fully aware of the great history of J. P.
McCarthy and Oh, about thirty minutes into the show, it
was starting to get light and the sun streamed through
the window. And I had come from working for the
PGA tour in Panavidra Beach, Florida, returning to Detroit, returning

(05:52):
to the three letter station I mentioned, and JP McCarthy
heading into a segment, surprised me by saying.

Speaker 11 (05:59):
This.

Speaker 6 (06:01):
Beautiful sunrise happening right now, and it's Monday to fifth
of August. It's like the start of a great week
around Chat. I'm JP McCarthy. That's welcome to my new
morning show producer Mike Shields just up from Florida. Welcome Mike.

Speaker 12 (06:14):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (06:15):
Was I shocked and surprised, And I was shocked and
surprised for the rest of my career because this program
that you listen to right now with me starts with
his voice and it has for twenty years, three times
a day, saying good morning World, just like you heard
him say there. JP McCarthy said good Morning World all
the way into the Radio Hall of Fame, as was

(06:37):
inducted in Chicago during my tenure.

Speaker 6 (06:43):
Good morning World, and day Yeah, very pleasant Wednesday to
you here at nineteen minutes after six. It's raining like
the old proverbial cats and dogs.

Speaker 13 (06:50):
When it comes to morning radio and Michigan, the weird
tradition is spelled with six letters JP.

Speaker 14 (06:56):
JP McCarthy is the voice.

Speaker 15 (06:57):
Of the trichn talk to very order, controversial people and
ask them very direct and pointed questions with all being rude.

Speaker 16 (07:04):
About I can't tell you how many mornings I've had
breakfast with JP McCarthy.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
What's the problem with Barry Sanders? It doesn't add up
to one hundred and fifty million governors, So where's the
rest of the money coming from? Your man has got
to get tougher if he's going to close the gap.
Doesn't it be nice to see the gloves off the
one more time?

Speaker 13 (07:20):
Don't you think President is talking.

Speaker 17 (07:23):
To you again?

Speaker 5 (07:24):
I'm glad to hear you for it.

Speaker 6 (07:25):
Well, it's nice to hear you, performers, Charleston.

Speaker 8 (07:27):
Heston, I'd lovely to be borrowing your audience to people,
all of them.

Speaker 6 (07:30):
That's what you think.

Speaker 5 (07:32):
Yeah, the morning fine.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
Everyone talks to JP at the end of my line
this morning, the maybe the greatest golfer who's ever lived.
Name is Jack Nicholas. I'm doing fine after his proudest moment.
Leiah Cooca, good morning, all.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
Right, stuff, it's all about.

Speaker 6 (07:50):
Good morning, General Yeger, John Delorian, and welcome back.

Speaker 18 (07:54):
JP.

Speaker 19 (07:54):
It's a pleasure to see you again.

Speaker 6 (07:56):
James Raquel, Well, it's doing it, so that counts better.

Speaker 7 (07:58):
Believe it.

Speaker 8 (07:59):
It's Carter.

Speaker 6 (08:00):
Have you ever buried the hatchet with the Senator?

Speaker 20 (08:02):
We've never had any personal animation.

Speaker 13 (08:04):
No one understands Detroit, Betty. Nowhere else will you find
a closer relationship between a city and its favorite radio personality.

Speaker 21 (08:12):
JP knows everybody who's anybody in Detroit.

Speaker 14 (08:14):
He's comfortable to get up with.

Speaker 13 (08:15):
I like the way JP does it, while his legions
of loyal listeners are justifiably proud to them and to
everyone in Michigan. J. P. McCarthy has been a Hall
of Famer for a long long time.

Speaker 6 (08:29):
And JP McCarthy will get this turkey on the road
in a minute.

Speaker 7 (08:34):
And we were working on syndicating his program when he
passed away in August on this date, all those years ago,
nineteen ninety five, at the height of his powers. We
salute him today and we salute radio. It's Michael Patrick
Shields through the AT and T microphones. Viva JP.

Commercetionnade O'Connor is said to be the subject of an
upcoming biopic. According to Variety, the film will take fans
through her early life and journey through the music industry.
The untitled film follows the release of the twenty twenty
two O'Connor documentary Nothing Compares. A release date hasn't been revealed.

(11:20):
O'Connor died in July of twenty twenty three at fifty
six years old of natural causes. Heavy Metal Icon's Megadeath
are calling it a career. Mark Mayfield fills us in.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Your Statement. On the band's website, frontman Dave Mustaine announced
their next album will be their last and they will
embark on a global farewell tour. In twenty twenty six,
Bustain told fans dope be mad, dope be sad, be
happy for us all come celebrate with me these next
few years. Megadeth formed in nineteen eighty three after Mustain
was kicked out of Metallica. They are considered one of
thrash Medals Big Four, along with Metallica, Slayer and n

Speaker 25 (12:04):
Weapons is expected to take first place once again at
the weekend box office. Zach Craiger directed Thriller is looking

its second outing.

Speaker 23 (12:16):
The action film Nobody Too will battle it.

Out with Freaky or Friday for second place, as both
are expected to net around ten to twelve million.

Speaker 23 (12:25):
That's entertainment. I'm Jaquelin, Carl.

Speaker 7 (12:34):
Graace.

Speaker 8 (12:34):
Guys are gonna clear up. Put on a happy phase,
brush off the clouds and cheer up.

Speaker 26 (12:42):
Put on a happy phase.

Speaker 27 (12:45):
Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy.

Speaker 28 (12:48):
It's not your style.

Speaker 9 (12:50):
You look so good that you'll be glad you decided
to smile.

Speaker 7 (12:55):
We're smiling this morning at radio, and we're on radio
stations across the state of Michigan. It's Michael Patrick Shields
with you. And growing up, people say, well, why did
you get into radio? I say, I heard voices in
Detroit on the radio, and of course the great Larry
King nationally. That just charmed me to death. And I

(13:15):
was like a moth to the flame. So we're going
to celebrate the voices of some of them this morning.
Let us as we salute J. P. McCarthy, remember that
his counterparts on the FM, since JP was on the AM,
was the big star there on the FM. The comedy
guy was Dick Purton, and I got the chance to
understudy as an intern and then an assistant producer for

(13:37):
Dick Purton before I got to work for JP McCarthy
in the formal capacity. Here's a touch of what Dick
Purton was like on Cozy's w c z Y ninety
five point five FM.

Speaker 29 (13:48):
Bruse hornsby the rain juts the valley road and it's
seven after eight hat oh seven of the morning on
Z ninety five point five five. In the last hour
forty four degrees and mostly sundy in a high sixty two.

Speaker 8 (13:58):
We'll go to the phone. Your good morning, Good morning, Dick.

Speaker 30 (14:01):
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States and traveling kind
of guy.

Speaker 29 (14:06):
Right you are, mister President. It's off to the summit.
I guess today.

Speaker 30 (14:09):
Huh wait, I'm not sure where I'm headed, Dick. Nancy
says that information is on a need to no basis.

Speaker 29 (14:16):
Oh I see, I say, well, this could be an
historic meeting.

Speaker 30 (14:20):
You mean when Jupiter aligns with Mars.

Speaker 29 (14:23):
No, no, miss President, I meant the big superpower confrontation
you're headed for.

Speaker 30 (14:28):
Oh there, Yeah, well, I don't think there will be
any trouble Nancy and missus Gorbacheff will probably be a
lot friendly.

Speaker 29 (14:35):
No, mister President, I was referring to you and mister Gorbacheff.

Speaker 30 (14:39):
Oh is he going to be there too?

Speaker 29 (14:42):
Yes?

Speaker 30 (14:42):
He is, Nancy, did.

Speaker 10 (14:44):
You know her husband is going to be there.

Speaker 29 (14:46):
Too, mister President, look it, let me change it for
a moment and hiss.

Speaker 11 (14:50):
No.

Speaker 29 (14:50):
Book Lei Cooker refers to you as a nice guy,
but shallow in your grasp of the presidency, and he
says that you would rather tell anecdotes than confront tough ish, Will.

Speaker 10 (15:01):
It's funny that you should mention that.

Speaker 30 (15:03):
Really, it reminds me at the time that I was working.

Speaker 11 (15:06):
On the picture.

Speaker 7 (15:07):
Really, what happened, Nancy?

Speaker 31 (15:09):
Why did you kick me?

Speaker 29 (15:10):
Look, mister President, let me just say, I want to
wish you good luck on the summit, and we're really
all behind you.

Speaker 11 (15:16):
Will.

Speaker 29 (15:17):
I am too right, good bibe. President, thank you for
joining us on the Dick Purton Show this morning and
C ninety five point five.

Speaker 8 (15:25):
Bye bye, bye bye.

Speaker 30 (15:26):
Okay, Nancy, Let's play Rambo three this time. I'll be
the helicopter and you grabbed.

Speaker 8 (15:32):
The bow and arrow, so I was the president.

Speaker 11 (15:37):
Bye bye.

Speaker 7 (15:39):
Before Dick Purtin was on Cozy ninety five, He's with
Tom Ryan on CKLW, which was across the river in Windsor.

Speaker 32 (15:50):
Did eleven.

Speaker 33 (15:51):
This is John Belmont Club twenty twenty News. Congratulations, Detroit,
you can be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. The nineteen seventy
two re homicide tool has reached a nice even seven
hundred and fifty. Details on the latest leveling from police
Sergent Bob Buddy. How does Detroit Police Commissioner Jerry Tanyon
react to the record number of homicides with shock and
determination to change things next year. Tanian points out that

(16:14):
detroiters aren't in danger just to walk down the street.
Most blowoffs are among acquaintances or dope dealers. Windsor police
Chief Gord Preston dealt with for murders during nineteen seventy three,
the same as seventy two. He credits Canada's strict gun
control laws.

Speaker 7 (16:27):
And you're not gonna believe it, but John Belmont, the
voice who heard there, who went on to Network radio,
was the brother of Jeff Elliot, who was the Jeff
of Jeff and Jair. And Jeff and Jair were the
two comedy guys on Magic ninety five that I called
when I was in high school to ask them is
it possible even to make a living in radio? And
they invited me into the studio and I got to

(16:50):
watch their show, and I became lifelong friends, and eventually
nominated them for the Radio Hall of Fame, and they
got inducted in Chicago. Here's what they sounded like in Detroit.

Speaker 18 (17:01):
WMJC Magic ninety five at twenty six after seven, we
should have played thirty in a row. We could just
sit here and have a good time with these people
all the morning.

Speaker 34 (17:08):
This is easy.

Speaker 6 (17:09):
There's nothing to this. Don't have to dress up or anything.

Speaker 18 (17:11):
All right, you tell them what time it is, Yeah,
twenty six after seven if you've just joined us listening,
and now we're playing five songs in a row.

Speaker 8 (17:18):
This was our.

Speaker 18 (17:18):
Announcement this morning. We haven't given you the entire reason
we're doing this yet, so you're still in on it.
We're playing five songs in a row. You write down
the title and the artist, and it's gonna be what.
It's gonna mean a lot to you when we're done. Here,
here's the last one.

Speaker 11 (17:29):
What is it?

Speaker 7 (17:29):
I don't have the list Dobie brothers.

Speaker 32 (17:30):
Listen to the music, my Dewey.

Speaker 29 (17:31):
Brothers, and listen to the music.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
This last one here, five in a row, and then
we will tell you why you've been writing down the
title in the artist, all right?

Speaker 1 (17:37):
Twenty five minutes after seven.

Speaker 6 (17:39):
O'clock at WMJC.

Speaker 7 (17:42):
And before Jeff and Jair became Jeff and Jair, it
was Jim and Jair. Jim Harper was partnered with Jerry
Saint James, and after Jerry Saint James split off on
his own, well, it became Harper Gannon and you on WNIC.

Speaker 6 (17:57):
Hi, I'm Jim Harper wn I c FM one hundred
am thirteen, and I'm Steve Gannon.

Speaker 29 (18:01):
And we'd like to invite you to listen to our show
every morning on wn I C Steve.

Speaker 6 (18:04):
You know you've developed a real bad habit.

Speaker 31 (18:06):
I'm finishing your sentences.

Speaker 35 (18:08):
Yeah, but if I were to tell a joke right now,
I tell the punchline, I wouldn't do that.

Speaker 36 (18:11):
Come on, are you sure?

Speaker 13 (18:12):
Yeah?

Speaker 31 (18:12):
Positive?

Speaker 4 (18:13):
Okay.

Speaker 32 (18:14):
The guy walks up to me the other day and
says he hasn't had a bite in three day, so
you bet him.

Speaker 30 (18:21):
Harper and Gannon d Good Mornings on w n I
c FM one hundred Am thirteen.

Speaker 8 (18:25):
Jim, webe, what do you want to mate?

Speaker 7 (18:27):
When I was in high school, I called into their
show to introduce the Beatle Break, and eventually Jim Harper
did the commercials for one of my recent books. You
heard him on this show announcing I call him mister President.
All these years later, I kept in touch with these
guys who were my heroes when I was of that age.

(18:48):
If you were on one hundred point three w NIC
and you went up the dial, you know eight points
is what it is. I think till you get to
the next FM station. Well, it was the riff and
if you were on wrif you were listening to Arthur Panhello.

Speaker 19 (19:05):
This is the Rip doing thirty minutes a nonstyle rock
starting with the Bruiser Band. It's a MotorCity jam three
rock and roll. The Bruiser Band doing it on the
riff with me, Arthur P that's crue.

Speaker 29 (19:19):
Maybe.

Speaker 7 (19:20):
And then of course came well, I came to know
George Norrie Coast to coast am overnight. He's on six
hundred and fifty stations and off and across the table
from me.

Speaker 8 (19:31):
I want to say hi to all my Michiganders.

Speaker 37 (19:33):
They are the best. It's a great state. I love
the Midwest. I go back there as often as I can.
Just a hello to everybody in Michigan that listens to
your show, because Michael Shields is doing a great job
keeping things going in Michigan for everybody.

Speaker 7 (19:49):
Thank you to all of the great voices of radio
who put me where I am today and inspired me
and hopefully you two. It's Michael Patrick Shields.

Speaker 38 (19:59):
New York City's May says the water in Central Harlem
is safe to breathe and drink. Following a deadly Legionnaire's
outbreak in five zip codes, ninety two people have been
diagnosed with the pneumonia like disease in the past three weeks,
with three deaths and fifteen New Yorkers still hospitalized. Acting
Health Commissioner Michelle Moore said the good news is that

(20:21):
cases are declining.

Speaker 39 (20:22):
Legionnaire's disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics when it
is diagnosed early.

Speaker 38 (20:27):
Doctor Moore said that anyone with flu like symptoms, cough, fever,
or difficulty breathing in the affected zip codes should seek
medical treatment immediately. Drought and ocean patterns are largely being
driven by human activity. That's according to a new study
published in Nature. Greenhouse gas emissions generated by humans, the
study says, may have locked in a climate pattern responsible

(20:50):
for long term megadrought across the western US. Health update.
I'm Sarah Lee Kessler.

Speaker 7 (21:15):
This was the theme of Larry King's overnight radio show,
long before he came on television on CNN, and his
show was amazing Overnight. It was weird, it was funny,
it had newsmakers, and everybody from Frank Sinatra to Jackie
Gleason to presidents of the United States on the mutual
broadcasting system from the nation's capital, and I knew he

(21:40):
smoked through that show, and he took weird calls, And
one of those weird calls was me once again when
I was in high school listening in the middle of
the night, Arthur Penthello from the Riff speaking of presidents.
I'm told had a presidential campaign, and it sounded like this.

Speaker 6 (22:03):
A lot of people out there are worried.

Speaker 29 (22:04):
They're worried about their jobs, about the economy, about whether.

Speaker 19 (22:07):
Or not we may ever get a decent football team.

Speaker 7 (22:09):
Well, I'm here to tell you worry no more.

Speaker 19 (22:12):
It's time to get on board the party party with me.

Speaker 7 (22:16):
Arthur P.

Speaker 19 (22:17):
The Party Party stands up for you, and you're right
to have a good time wherever whatever. And I have
the hottest running made in the country. I give you
Christy Lee for VP.

Speaker 23 (22:31):
Thanks big Daddy.

Speaker 40 (22:32):
We're not going to sit here and talk about change
or the horrendous economy. We just want to rock, plain
and simple. So be sure to log onto WF dot
com to find out where you can get your Arthur
P for President lawnsign so you can represent the party
party in eight.

Speaker 7 (22:48):
The Party Party JP McCarthy, of course, was where I
ended up really really accelerating into the radio business as
a producer. And on any given morning throughout the Midwest
and beyond, you heard this.

Speaker 8 (23:06):
Good morning at a very pleasant Thursday to you.

Speaker 6 (23:09):
It is the last day in April, and a beautiful morning, Thank.

Speaker 8 (23:13):
You God, what gorgeous day.

Speaker 6 (23:15):
The sky is absolutely baby blue like your eyes. And
so this is it for studio day to day, this
venerable old place.

Speaker 8 (23:24):
Seventeen minutes after seven in the morning.

Speaker 6 (23:26):
Now here's Ray Steven.

Speaker 7 (23:31):
And here we are now on thirteen radio stations across
the state of Michigan, celebrating radio this morning with you
and always at mibigshow dot.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
Com INBC News Radio, I'm Mark Mayfield. President Trump won't

(24:05):
share any possible deals he may have in mind when
he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska today.
Trump said, this is the first step.

Speaker 41 (24:13):
I think it's going to be a good meeting. But
the more important meeting will be the second.

Speaker 8 (24:16):
Meeting that we're having.

Speaker 41 (24:17):
We're going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelenski, myself.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
Reports have been rampant regarding Russia, Ukraine land swamps and
the possibility of the US offering Russia a rare earth
mineral deal if it leads to peace. When asked at
the White House, Trump would only say we'll see what happens.
Former President Barack Obama is supporting Texas Democrats who left
the state to block a GOP redistricting plan. In a
virtual meeting Thursday, Obama told the Texas lawmakers that their

(24:44):
actions were inspiring others. Obama said, we can't let a
systematic assault on democracy just happen. And because of your courage,
what you've seen is California responding and other states looking
at what they can do to offset this mid decade jerrymandering.
Texas Representative Gen Wu said Obamas and to Ho was
proof that they have supportive Democrats at every level. There's
an update in the criminal case involving South Texas Congressman

(25:07):
Henry quoher Brian Shook reports.

Speaker 28 (25:09):
Court records show that two of the fourteen counts have
been dropped against him and his wife. The pair still
face charges of conspiracy, bribery, and money laundering. The Democratic
lawmaker is accused of accepting cash in exchange for supporting
the interests of both an energy company controlled by the
Azerbaijan government and a bank in Mexico. He and his

(25:30):
wife have pleaded not guilty. I'm Brian Shook.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
And Tropical storm Erin is close to becoming a hurricane.
Maximum sustained wins seventy miles per hour as of the
latest update, with the storm expected to become the first
hurricane of the twenty twenty five Atlantic season. The National
Hurricane Center expects Aaron to reach hurricane strength within hours.
It's still unclear if Aaron will have any impact.

Speaker 8 (25:51):
On the US East Coast.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
You are listening to the latest from NBC News Radio.
Elon Musk is losing his Exai partner, Igor Babushkin, who
led the engineering teams along with helping to launch Xai
in twenty twenty three. Posted on Xody, is leaving the company.
Tech Crunch reports that Babushin is leaving Xai to launch
his own venture capital firm, Babushkin Ventures. Weimo is uppering

(26:13):
its music game by now offering Spotify integration when riding
in one of its robotaxis. Weimo's website explains that users
need only to tap Spotify from the InCAR music menu,
verify from their smartphone and then listen as WEIMO puts
it your ride, your music. And what sapp is accusing

(26:36):
the Russian government of trying to block its service. The
popular messaging app owned by Meta issued a statement on
social media alleging that Russia is trying to block it
from over one hundred million Russian people. What Sapp has
pledged to keep doing all that it can to make
end to end encrypted communication available to people everywhere, including
in Russia. Tech Report.

Speaker 26 (26:55):
I'm Martneyfield.

Speaker 7 (27:24):
Bobby Laurel wrote this song for J. P. McCarthy and
created this jingle. And when we speak about the great
voices of radio we're hearing this morning, including J. P. McCarthy,
it's Michael Patrick Shields saluting them. Wally Phillips was one
of the great voices in Chicago, which was another really
really big, big radio town with Steve Doll and Gary

(27:45):
Meyer and all the rest of them there, and Wally
Phillips when the Radio Hall of Fame induction took place.
The National Radio Hall of Fame is in Chicago. Tim
McGuire and I once visited there, and I was there
of course when Jeff and JERR were installed in the
Hall of Fame. And when JP was inducted into the
National Radio Hall of Fame, it was Wally Phillips and

(28:10):
it was Paul Harvey, if you can believe it, who
also had history at WKZO and Kalamazoo anchored his national
show from Chicago. Those two big, big voices introduced JP.

Speaker 33 (28:24):
Now in the category of local or regional personality. Here
to present this year's award is WGNS Wally Phillips.

Speaker 42 (28:33):
One score and seven years ago, our fathers, who owned
a piece of WJR and Detroit, scoured the country to
find a young, brilliant, educated, intelligent, innovative, imaginative, erudite, sophisticated, mature, articulate, devoted, sincere, first, picacious, astute,

(28:54):
extremely good looking talent for their morning drive time. Unfortunately,
I was signed with wh at the time, so I
wasn't available.

Speaker 43 (29:03):
So they thought, well, let's try another text. What if
we were to get something really innovative, the most ignorant, insulting, smarmy, scuzzy, scurrilous, revolting, repulsive, bias, bigoted, angry, tasteless, obnoxious,
and obscene broadcaster in America. But at that time, Howard
was eight years old and was still under supervision for

(29:30):
a misguide that lewd conduct report at a confessional at
Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

Speaker 32 (29:36):
So they picked J. P.

Speaker 43 (29:37):
McCarthy, a man who had been turned down twice by
the Barbara Walters School of Speech. Nonetheless, he's been waking
up Detroit on WJR radio over over twenty seven years,
has been rated number one for each of these years.
He has a knack forgetting important people to talk to
him when they refuse interviews everywhere else he sends his
rejects to Larry King, the only person whoever declined had

(30:00):
an interview with JP. I don't know where he is today,
but I'm sure mister Hoffa learned to regret. He's a
self made man, which will show you in a minute
what unskilled labor can do. But the National Association of
Broadcasters has nominated JP's Major Market Personality of the Year
for the Marconi Awards four years of the awards existence,

(30:21):
and Billboard magazine has given jps National Radio Personality the
Year Award four times.

Speaker 7 (30:30):
Amazing and Paul Harvey, good Day and the rest of
the story the voice you heard there at the beginning,
even Howard Stern got a shout out on this radio
show today, didn't he. But Paul Harvey, you almost never
heard his voice other than noon till twelve twenty when
he gave his full lunchtime newscast, which was followed by

(30:52):
The Focus Show with JP McCarthy. But he also gave
a little insert at eight thirty in the morning and
Paul Harvey, though Dan to be interviewed by, of course
JP McCarthy.

Speaker 6 (31:03):
Paul Harvey, Good morning, Paul, It's Friday.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
Good morning American. Hey, I'm so glad for a chance
to greet you on this significant day. That's quite a
milestone in our industry.

Speaker 6 (31:16):
Wasn't it fun to be able to have a successfully
avoided work all these years? And I know that's the
same way you feel about it.

Speaker 5 (31:23):
I do indeed, JV. I don't think either of us
has ever had an honest job.

Speaker 6 (31:27):
I never have. You know, I kind of surround you
every day. You're not aware of this because you're on
a million stations around the country.

Speaker 5 (31:35):
But now, don't underestimate your constituency. From what I hear
from the JR listening audience, You and I are you.
You and I are going steady. We're a team.

Speaker 6 (31:45):
Well, you're in the middle of my show in the
morning at eight thirty, and then you precede my noontime
interview show focused at the noon hour, so you may
not be aware of it, but we're partners. Paul Harvey,
I'm delightheed you delighthead. You're nice to call this morning.
Tell me something, Now, what time? A lot of people
have asked me this and I have no idea, But
what time do you get up to prepare those shows?

Speaker 5 (32:07):
Well, let's see, I got up at three thirty Chicago
time and get to my desk about four to twenty.
The biggest problem JV is when I'm on the West
Coast because then, of course I'm still on Eastern time,
and I'm up at one thirty in the morning, and
there's nobody abroad but you know, bakery drivers, bad girls,
and Paul Harvey. That's a lonely life out there. There's

(32:32):
no place to eat breakfast.

Speaker 7 (32:36):
Ironically, ironically, the first time I ever heard the phrase
polo lounge ever uttered was on the J. P. McCarthy Show,
and I was just a kid, and they were joking
about taking a phone call at the important Polo Lounge.
It was in a promo and I ran into Sugar
Ray Leonard not too long ago, and he was very

(32:57):
friendly at Polo Lounge. And he was mentioned in a
conversation with another national broadcasting star who agreed to join J. P.
McCarthy on the radio, and that was the sports star
Howard co Cell.

Speaker 10 (33:13):
After all, you're talking to the man who introduced Ray
Leonard to the whole world at Cortier Square in nineteen
seventy six, with the late Sarge Johnson, who taught him
boxing and who died tragically in that crash at Warsaw
Airport a number of years back. But Sarge was the

(33:34):
man behind Gray Leonard and the man behind the American
boxing team in the seventy six Olympics, and of course,
on June twentieth, nineteen eighty, in the Olympic Stadium in Mentorial,
I called the first fight, and four months later in
the super Dome, I call the second fight when the
bully quit.

Speaker 6 (33:55):
Yep, no Moss, no Moss.

Speaker 10 (33:58):
But apparently about these men, what can I tell you?
I think it's a farce.

Speaker 6 (34:04):
Well it's a farce, but Bray Leonard is going to
walk out of there with twelve or thirteen million dollars.

Speaker 10 (34:08):
Today, right, he now has a safe deposit box where
a heart.

Speaker 5 (34:12):
Used to be.

Speaker 10 (34:14):
He was once a very nice kid, but he's not
that anymore.

Speaker 7 (34:19):
He's got or something else, aren't they. They also talked
Howard Cosell and JP about sports and Pearl Harbor.

Speaker 6 (34:28):
Well, you know, Howard, it's like an old friend of
mine once said, it's not the money, it's the amount.
Good to talk to you this morning, and I hope
we talk again soon.

Speaker 10 (34:38):
I hope so. And happy well, I can't say happy
Pearl Harbor day. Well, I remember it too.

Speaker 6 (34:45):
Vividly, hard to believe that that was forty eight years ago.

Speaker 10 (34:48):
Today, forty eight years ago today, and you know what
was happening at the old Polo Grounds. No, the public
address announcer was the late off of Daily Yeah at
the prize winning sports writer of the New York Times,
the sports columnist, and he kept intoning to all of
us at the arena that day because then Brooklyn Football

(35:12):
dotch has simply crushed the then New York Football Giants
twenty one to seven. And he kept saying, with your
report to your unit immediately, And people in uniform were
leaving and leaving as quickly as possible. Incredibly, I didn't
really know that what had happened at Parolam, but God.

Speaker 5 (35:35):
Bless you well.

Speaker 6 (35:36):
Hangover a second later that day, Howard, this is the
way you heard it, I'm sure, and the rest of
the nation have you got a second?

Speaker 10 (35:43):
Sure?

Speaker 6 (35:43):
This is the way it was announced forty eight years
ago today.

Speaker 7 (35:47):
From the NVTs Roman New York men who witnessed history
and became radio history and remain radio history. Celebrated by
me Michael Patrick Shields.

we will feel a powerful win in our sales that

Speaker 7 (36:59):
When it comes to health care costs, we often focus
on one thing, our insurance premiums. But what if we're
only seeing part of the picture. The truth is our
health insurance costs reside downstream at the end of the
cost equation. But to really understand what's driving up costs,
we need to look upstream to the healthcare system itself. Upstream,
there are costs like the price is charged by hospitals

(37:21):
and doctors, and the cost of prescription drugs, healthcare administration,
and technology. These costs flow downstream directly into your health
insurance premium. That's why Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
is advocating for a system wide solution to address the
rising cost of healthcare. Blue Cross knows that healthcare is personal,

(37:41):
needs to work for everyone, and affordability matters, and that
starts with shedding light on the entire cost equation, from
upstream costs to downstream premiums. Want to learn more, visit

Speaker 2 (38:05):
Summit between President Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin is happening
today in Alaska. White House correspondent John Decker says Trump's
goals are clear.

Speaker 45 (38:13):
Is that this does pave the way for a second meeting,
a second summit, and then ultimately an end to the
war after three years of fighting.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
Decker says there's a lot of uncertainty about what the
mood will be like when the two leaders meet. Trump
has said he'll know right away what Putin's intentions are,
and if he feels Putin wants to end the war,
he'll stay. If Trump believes he has no interest in
ending the bloodshed, he'll exit quickly. Aeric Canada is grounding
flights as flight attendants could strike this weekend. The airline

An Active view of life and living in the Great
Lakes Area, a lively look at people, places, events and
attitudes put into focus by J. P.

Speaker 7 (39:19):
McCarthy. And this was one of the theme songs for JP.
Unless you think it always went as smooth as you've
been hearing, there were occasions, because it's live radio, where
the unusual happened, the surprise happened. And let's go to
the Thanksgiving Day parade coverage when JP was the anchor

(39:40):
and the man you heard at all those Tiger games,
the man who went to Central Michigan University. Paul Carey
was seated next to JP as his color analyst for
the parade, and along came a group of singing Palm
Palm girls, which was very strange. That was the next
item in the parade. And we had a book in
front and they could see in the book, which you know,

(40:02):
attractions were coming by next. And so Paul Carey described
the singing pom pom girls like.

Speaker 27 (40:09):
This, Joe, I had no idea that pom pom girls
could be so delightful orally.

Speaker 6 (40:20):
They certainly are very attractive and they sound good. They're
also dressed in as you'll note, blue and silver. Now
maybe that's an honor of it.

Speaker 7 (40:31):
Back in the day, when the parade ended, JD would
get right into a limousine and be taken up to
the Pontiac Silverdome to go to the Lions Thanksgiving Day game.
I remember seeing that very clearly. And then sometimes he
would take callers live callers, of course, and he would
have little segments called What's bothering You? And you could

(40:52):
call in and venture spleen, as Dick Purtin used to say,
or you could call in and give your winner or
loser of the day. And it was always spontaneous, and
so this happened.

Speaker 6 (41:05):
Yeah, we have time for a quick winter here before
we joined Paul Harvey.

Speaker 26 (41:08):
You have a winter or a loser.

Speaker 17 (41:09):
If you have a luler for you, who is it?

Speaker 6 (41:13):
Thank you so much I needed that this morning. I'd
stay with us for Paul Harvey from Chicago here on
w j R superstation seven sixty.

Speaker 7 (41:25):
And how about it when a guest goes sideways like
the very grumpy mort Saul.

Speaker 8 (41:42):
Let's hold a commercial place.

Speaker 6 (41:43):
I'm gonna meet meet Moret Salt, who is currently at
the Capistrano here in Detroit, and we gave the business
to yesterday because of what he wasn't here. I wouldn't
upset up Stanley.

Speaker 7 (41:54):
Could you explain that remark to me?

Speaker 6 (41:56):
You know, I was just I just assumed, not you
were you would do yesterday, No kidding, And I kidded
you about it on the air.

Speaker 27 (42:03):
Even though I informed the press agent and the owner
of the club that I tape a show in California
on Sunday, and with the time change, I would be
flying during Monday. So who scheduled me? They knew that
two weeks before I opened.

Speaker 8 (42:19):
There's no need to apologize or even apologize.

Speaker 27 (42:25):
I've been in this business thirteen years and I've never
missed the performance sickness or otherwise. So uh, nobody informed
me I was supposed to be here yesterday.

Speaker 8 (42:37):
Okay, an explanation really wasn't necessary.

Speaker 27 (42:40):
Well, since I got wrapped, I guess maybe I don't
know about it.

Speaker 6 (42:43):
You didn't get wrapped that bad? It was all in
you know it was inhumor. Yes, yeah, hopefully. Wait listen
you you know you're you really are an angry young man,
aren't you?

Speaker 27 (42:54):
No?

Speaker 8 (42:54):
But what upsets you? Tell us some of the things.
What upsets me?

Speaker 27 (42:59):
Well, I think America was a good idea and I'd
like to see it go on and not come to
an end.

Speaker 8 (43:05):
Do you think it's in danger of coming to an end?
You bet? Why?

Speaker 27 (43:09):
Mediocrity and greed? Now which end of the spectrum do
you want to go through?

Speaker 6 (43:15):
Talking to more?

Speaker 8 (43:16):
Saul more in your nightclub back?

Speaker 6 (43:19):
Will you take an unpleasant situation and make it funny
with cynicism living?

Speaker 8 (43:24):
No, not cynicism.

Speaker 7 (43:26):
I'm going to give you a blitz education here.

Speaker 8 (43:28):
Okay.

Speaker 27 (43:29):
Cynicism is the classmate of inexperience. I think you're talking
about being embittered. I am not a cynic. If I
was a cynic, I wouldn't get out of bed in
the morning and go to work and try to talk
to people.

Speaker 8 (43:42):
Do you remember read Thomas Wolf?

Speaker 27 (43:46):
Try it sometime you might find out where we live.
It's just a normal guy who'd like to know who
killed the president.

Speaker 8 (43:53):
You don't think it was Harvey eysweal, No, I don't.

Speaker 27 (43:55):
They didn't just bury a guy that buried their justice.
I don't avenge the president's death by electing his brother.
These are all things people should be thinking about.

Speaker 6 (44:05):
Do you think they're going to elect the president's brother,
of course in nineteen sixty eight.

Speaker 47 (44:08):
Of course, no.

Speaker 27 (44:09):
Maybe if he can quell his ambition that long, they
might elect him in nineteen seventy two. They probably will.
It won't make any difference by them anyway.

Speaker 8 (44:18):
Tell us about your show, then, isn't it true the
happy guy? Isn't he?

Speaker 48 (44:22):
Okay?

Speaker 27 (44:23):
What's a happy guy? Someone who agrees with you?

Speaker 8 (44:25):
Not necessarily? How long has it been since you smiled?

Speaker 27 (44:29):
How long has it been since you've seen me work?

Speaker 8 (44:32):
Two years?

Speaker 27 (44:32):
You're flying blind, aren't you?

Speaker 8 (44:34):
Two years? The fact that the matter is, it's not a.

Speaker 27 (44:38):
Matter of being a happy guy. It's a matter of talking.
Since when you ask me a question, I pay you
the courtesy of answering you straight. I don't use you
as a springboard to be funny for the audience.

Speaker 49 (44:49):
Now.

Speaker 7 (44:50):
I'll talk to you about anything you want.

Speaker 27 (44:52):
But if you question me about that was the week
that was? Or political matters or the death of the president.
It's hard to be funny about that. There's nothing worse
than America than a loser. In fact, all the German
people I was there last year, all they have against
Hitler is that he lost. That's all anybody has against
the candidate here. He can do anything except lose. You
can steal and kill, but don't lose.

Speaker 8 (45:13):
Who do you think would be What do I mean?
Who would I back for president?

Speaker 6 (45:17):
If if somebody came up to you and said, mort Saul,
we'd like we'd like to have a candidate for the
Mortsaul party, anyone who would end the war in Vietnam,
and you know what, he'd be elected if he had
the sense to say it.

Speaker 27 (45:27):
If Romney got up to speak locally and said he
in the war, he'd be elected in a landslide. Ronald
Reagan could be president if he'd end the war. The
American people have not been given choice.

Speaker 6 (45:39):
Is it your opinion that we should end the war
by pulling out of Vietnam?

Speaker 8 (45:44):
Come on, you know what you're doing now, aren't you?
What am I doing?

Speaker 27 (45:47):
You're waving a flag, you're taking no position, and you're
trying to make me the heavy.

Speaker 8 (45:53):
I think you're doing a good job of that yourself.
If you made a statement.

Speaker 6 (45:57):
What would you how would you solve the war in
viet Now? How would you get us out of it?

Speaker 27 (46:01):
Hey, you know this comes as a shock to you,
but I'm gonna remind you something you forgot in the
last fourteen minutes. I'm in show business. The last man
that asked me about ending the warren Vietnam was President Johnson.
Eminently more qualified than you and eminently more courteous.

Speaker 7 (46:17):

Who when the Fighting Tigers play.

Speaker 7 (49:09):
Speaking of having a Tiger by the tail, this is
the singing JP McCarthy saluting the Tigers. And at a
segment where we typically talked sports with Tony Cuthbert, another
great boys in radio, and we were just talking recently
about the bloopers of J. P. McCarthy. Here's one that

(49:29):
goes together when we're talking about Greg Norman, the great
golfer with whom JP played in his pal tournament that
raised money for charity. Greg Norman and a caller.

Speaker 6 (49:40):
Okay, but what's your point?

Speaker 4 (49:41):
Okay? Now, Greg Norman and has a tendency to be
in contention when he gets into the backside and then
for some reason or other, he loses. Do you know
which hole gave him the most problem last year?

Speaker 6 (49:59):
We hole a augusta.

Speaker 4 (50:00):
Yeah, well, in general, which hole? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (50:04):
Oh you mean the eighteenth hall?

Speaker 4 (50:06):
Well, no, not necessarily. I hope this doesn't offend any
of your listeners, but it was the one that was
next to the hemorrhoids he got.

Speaker 6 (50:17):
Oh you know what, I'm surprised at you. Shame on you.
You're too old to.

Speaker 7 (50:22):
Talk like that. Let's go back to baseball. Here's Sparky Anderson.

Speaker 16 (50:30):
This is Sparky Anderson.

Speaker 17 (50:32):
JP.

Speaker 16 (50:33):
Let me say this, there's no greater honor that you
could have than to be inducted into the National Podcasting
Hall of Fame on November fifteenth. But you certainly deserve it,
and This isn't just something for words. I've been interviewed many,
many times in my career, and I have never been
interviewed by somebody to an interview better than you. I

(50:56):
certainly congratulate you.

Speaker 3 (50:57):

flu catch.

Speaker 16 (51:32):
You know.

Speaker 12 (51:33):
We we're gonna.

Speaker 7 (51:35):

The one on one summit between President Trump and Russias
Vladimir Putin is happening today in Alaska. White Else correspondent
John Decker says Trump's goals are clear.

Speaker 45 (52:02):
Is that this does pave the way for a second meeting,
a second summit, and then ultimately an end to the
war after three years of fighting.

Speaker 2 (52:10):
Decker says there's a lot of uncertainty about what the
mood will be like when the two leaders meet. Trump
has said he'll know right away what Putin's intentions are,
and if he feels Putin wants to end the war,
he'll stay. If Trump believes he has no interest in
ending the bloodshed, he'll exit quickly. Aeric Canada is grounding

INVC News Radio. I'm Mark Mayfield. President Trump won't share
any possible deals he may have in mind when he
meets with the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska today.
Trump said, this is the first step.

Speaker 41 (54:12):
I think it's going to be a good meeting, but
the more important meeting will be the second meeting that
we're having. We're going to have a meeting with President Putin,
President Zelenski myself.

Speaker 2 (54:21):
Reports have been rampant regarding Russia Ukraine land swaps and
the possibility of the US offering Russia a rare earth
mineral deal if it leads to peace. When asked at
the White House, Trump would only say, we'll see what happens.
Former President Barack Obama is supporting Texas Democrats who left
the state to block a gop redistricting plan. In a

systematic assault on democracy just happen. And because of your courage.
What you've seen is California responding and other states looking
at what they can do to offset this mid decade jerrymandering.
Texas representative Gen Wu said Obama's endorsement was proof that

buyers are willing to compromise, more than seventy percent of
those surveyed still called personal safety and low crime must haves.

Speaker 52 (57:55):
The Mets slide continues fall to the Braves in New

Mets have dropped thirteen of their last fifteen, and manager
Carlos Mendoza talks about what is going wrong for the team.

Speaker 53 (58:10):
We just haven't been able to put everything together. You know,
whenever we're getting the offense, we're not getting the starting pitching.
Today we got starting pitching, We got some timely hitting,

couldn't close it out.

Speaker 52 (58:24):

Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (01:00:18):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthbert.

Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lancing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 47 (01:00:34):
Radio is such such a special place when you're alone
in that studio and it's just you and the audience.
Every broadcaster where they were at a ballpark, at a
music hall, in a dining room, at a remote or
in a studio, all alone, it's that voice projecting out
into the Night.

Speaker 5 (01:00:52):
Michael Patrick Shields.

Speaker 7 (01:00:54):
Is on the air, Good Morning World, or in the
case of our story, into the Morning, that of course
was Larry King and J. P. McCarthy. And you're listening
to Michael Patrick Shields celebrating radio this morning, and I
know you're saying, MPs, politics is your family business and
medias dot vertus. The truth is in the middle, and
we want some politics. Well we're going to give you

(01:01:16):
some politics, JP McCarthy style. Here's former Governor James Blanchard
on the JP McCarthy show.

Speaker 48 (01:01:27):
Thank you for mentioning JP. As you know, he was
a dear friend of mine.

Speaker 3 (01:01:31):
And you know JP was to.

Speaker 48 (01:01:34):
Radio in the Midwest what Johnny Carson was to late
night TV all across the country.

Speaker 57 (01:01:41):
An institution that can never be replaced.

Speaker 48 (01:01:44):
But certainly his protege has done extremely well. That is,
of course Michael Patrick.

Speaker 7 (01:01:50):
So that's very sweet of you. You made him governor
for a day, and I know that's one of the
things he was always most proud of.

Speaker 48 (01:01:58):
Yes, we even did a brief TV show together. You know,
he really tracked my career and you know I still
miss something you do too. It's you know, he just
he was just a wonderful person and trying to be
as nonpartisan.

Speaker 11 (01:02:17):
As he could.

Speaker 5 (01:02:18):
And he was certainly with me.

Speaker 48 (01:02:20):
In conducting interviews, whether it was on his program Focus
or it was The Morning the Morning Show.

Speaker 7 (01:02:28):
Yeah, let's go back to a governor even long before
James Blanchard, and that is Governor George Romney.

Speaker 6 (01:02:37):
Governor of the Estate of Michigan twenty five years ago
when we started doing all this business here in this station.
It's a very familiar name and the face and voice
he was, and he is Governor George Romney on the
other end of my line this morning. How are you, Governor?

Speaker 5 (01:02:52):
Good jp of congratulations on the twenty fifth anniversary. You know,
as a result of your anniversary, I've been trying to
analyze Leonora, and I listen to you more than anybody
else on radio, and I I tell you why I've.

Speaker 6 (01:03:07):
Got all the time in the world than you.

Speaker 5 (01:03:10):
Why now that I'm not done on salary and I'm
doing what I've always want to do, which is stimulating
volunteering nationally as an essential way of solving our social
problems in this country. Uh, I have lunch more at
home than I used to. And Lenora and I listened
to focus. We always try to range lunch so can

(01:03:33):
listen to focus. And I think the reason you're so
popular and so influentially is that you're serving others by
making making them better known and more influent, fluential. You're
not trying to build yourself up. You're not trying to
h You're trying to build them up. And you don't

(01:03:55):
bait them, and you don't belittle inland and you help
them to put their best foot forward. And that's a
great thing.

Speaker 6 (01:04:03):
Governor. You're very kind to say that, and thank you.
How's how is Leonor feeling these days?

Speaker 5 (01:04:07):
Well? I think she's on the line. Are you on
the line or well?

Speaker 17 (01:04:11):
I guess she isn't please that she's doing well, We
both are well.

Speaker 6 (01:04:16):
Please give her our love. We have a special spot
in our hearts for the Romney's. You know that.

Speaker 49 (01:04:21):
Yeah, are you on the line, Yes, I've been listening
to it on Rigel.

Speaker 6 (01:04:25):
Well, missus Romney, good morning and merry Christmas to you.

Speaker 49 (01:04:28):
Well, thank you, JP, very favorite of ours and of mine.
I remember so well how kind you were to me
when you interviewed me.

Speaker 7 (01:04:39):
Charming to say the least, And those of you listening
in Traverse City and WMKT certainly have a saucepart in
your heart for William Milliken, the governor, who also, of
course spoke to J. P. McCarthy.

Speaker 6 (01:04:51):
Let me talk politics with you for a second, may
I sure? Now, you were always known as a moderate Republican.
I think that's safe to say, isn't it.

Speaker 58 (01:04:59):
I think this to say, And you and I remain
that well, And you.

Speaker 6 (01:05:03):
Were very good with You were in a tenuous spot
because you you had to deal with a state that
was frequently more democratic than Republican and a House that
was frequently more democratic than Republican up in Lansing, and
and you handled it well. You walked that tightrope very well.
What do you think of your party now these days

(01:05:25):
with Gingrich the Speaker of the House, to be an
apparent major shift to the right on the political spectrum.

Speaker 58 (01:05:35):
Well, I think that remains to be seen how.

Speaker 5 (01:05:39):
Well they do.

Speaker 58 (01:05:40):
The Republicans clearly have control of the Congress. They've made
many commitments. So called Contract for America is about to
be implemented at least Newt. Gingrich says that it's a
tough assignment that has been taken on by the party

(01:06:01):
and by the party leadership to talk on the one
hand about welfare reform and crime fighting laws and constitutional
amendments for balance budget and term limits, and on the
other to talk about increased spending for the military and defense.

(01:06:23):
That's a major challenge this party has taken on, and
it remains to be seen whether they're going to be
successful or not. I have some reservations about certain elements
of that package, very strong reservations. As a matter of fact,
I think term limits are I've always supposed that. I
think the most effective term limits are the vote of

(01:06:46):
the people of this nation when they go to the
ballot box every two or four years.

Speaker 7 (01:06:52):
And how about the man from Veal City, John Angler,
who defeated James Blanchard to become a three term governor.

Speaker 6 (01:07:00):
The morning after his State of the State message, a
very upbeat message, he told the legislature cut taxes by
one point five billion over the next five years, and
just do it.

Speaker 59 (01:07:11):
That's right, JP, just do it.

Speaker 6 (01:07:13):
How are you this morning?

Speaker 17 (01:07:14):
I'm great?

Speaker 6 (01:07:15):
Taking a slice out of the Nike ads Well, why not?

Speaker 59 (01:07:19):
Well, I think this is something that we have no
choice on. We talked about this before the surplus as
such that it exceeds the headly amendment. We have to
reduce revenues, and let's get it done and get on
with the other tough budget issues that are going to
be waiting for us, and a lot of policy questions
that I think are important to moving Michigan forward.

Speaker 7 (01:07:39):
The man who they thought might be president, who was
the chairman of the Chrysler Corporation, having come from the
Ford Motor Company. JP's neighbor in fact, Leiah Coca.

Speaker 6 (01:07:49):
The chairman of Chrysler Corporation, the most admired businessman in
the world today and certainly the best known. Leiah Coca
the other end of our line this morning.

Speaker 7 (01:08:01):
How are you, Joe, How are you well?

Speaker 6 (01:08:03):
I'm terrific.

Speaker 60 (01:08:04):
I'm terrific. I hear that I'm almost right to the
hour in the day of your twenty fifth This is it.

Speaker 6 (01:08:11):
Right on the money, right on the money, huh, twenty
five years ago today, and I've still managed to avoid
having to really work for a living for all those years.

Speaker 60 (01:08:19):
No, You've kept us all happy, though, especially when we
needed it most in these dark winter Michigan mornings. And
I can't believe you started. I was here with you
listening to you. I can't believe you were twenty nine
years old, because I can't believe I was thirty nine
years old. Is why I have a problem.

Speaker 6 (01:08:34):
Matter of fact, you had something to do with me
coming back, though you may not have been aware of it.
Have you got a minute.

Speaker 60 (01:08:39):
I'm proud of it if I did tell me quick.

Speaker 7 (01:08:43):
The story was that JP went to San Francisco and
worked in California for a while before he came back,
and Leiah Coca called him the morning after Chrystler paid
off the government loan to the United States News Making Program.
For Sure It's MPs.

I'll get a little fun. Always feel good when I

Speaker 6 (01:13:52):
The last time that you were here via phone, we
had the first Lady of the State with us. Just
happened to be on the same program that day, Paula Blanchard,
and we reminisced about the campaign in nineteen eighty and
about the Democratic Convention. And you did say that you
were going to kick Senator Kennedy's ass, That's what those

(01:14:15):
were your words. In fact, then you did.

Speaker 8 (01:14:17):
Have you ever buried the hatchet with the senator.

Speaker 20 (01:14:19):
We've never had any personal animosity or unpleasantness between us.
As a matter of fact, I saw him last month
in Washington and we had a very pleasant exchange of
a handshake and a few words about our families. But
we have been political opponents.

Speaker 6 (01:14:35):
Aboard Air Force One with the president. Bush's the president.
The three latest polls I saw this morning, Remember this
is Sunday show the gaps closing. Obviously, that cheers you.
Why why is it closing anything?

Speaker 61 (01:14:48):
Because we're getting our message out and because people are
getting serious now about who they want to be president
of this country. They're asking himself, who do we trust
to be in that oval office. They recognize that a
lot of what they've been told night after night in
the national media has not been accurate. And I think

(01:15:08):
I also understand stand that though we have economic problems,
we're in something global, and they recognize America is doing
better than most of the international economies. So it's a
combination of things.

Speaker 6 (01:15:20):
Sir, What about the sure What about the ross Piro factor?
He's also improving in the numbers dramatically faster than you are.

I don't spend any time trying to.

Speaker 7 (01:15:34):
All I try to do is get my message out.

Speaker 61 (01:15:36):
I honestly can't help you know what it means.

Speaker 6 (01:15:39):
As mister president. A year and a half ago, immediately
following the Persian Gulf War and for a couple of
months thereafter, you could have been re elected by acclamation,
there would have been no need for a referendum.

Speaker 7 (01:15:51):
What happened.

Speaker 6 (01:15:52):
I know you've thought about that.

Speaker 61 (01:15:54):
The economy and the Democratic leadership. The Democratic leadership in
Congress decided the only way we can possibly win and
is to stop any progress for this economy, and the
bills that I put in to try to stimulate investment
in savings were blocked on pure partisan grounds. And then,
of course some of the friends in the media wanted

(01:16:15):
to see a horse. They feel much more comfortable personally
with Clinton, and they've gone.

Speaker 7 (01:16:19):
After me with a vengeance.

Speaker 61 (01:16:20):
But it's changing now because the American people are fair
and they'll say, listen, this president might make a mistake.
If he does, he admits it, and besides that he
has our trust and confidence.

Speaker 6 (01:16:31):
There is only one way to introduce my next guest.
It's a very simple introduction, and it is my pleasure
to be able to utter it. Ladies and gentlemen, the
President of the United States. Good afternoon, mister President.

Speaker 31 (01:16:43):
How are you.

Speaker 29 (01:16:44):
I'm great.

Speaker 6 (01:16:44):
It's nice to talk to you again, mister President. One
of the thrusts of your campaign was jobs. There would
be more jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs would be created if
the business climate isn't good. If there isn't an opportunity
for businesses to do well, to be successful, there will
be fewer jobs. I mean, that's just simple economics, isn't it.

Speaker 62 (01:17:05):
That's right, But simple economics dictate that the President of
the United States stopped telling everybody what they want to
hear and start telling the truth. That's what simple economics dictate.
I mean, in nineteen eighty one, we cut taxes and
increase spending and nearly bankrupted this country over the next
twelve years, and we've been paying for it ever since.
So that we had very high long term interest rates,

(01:17:26):
and credit was expensive, and job generation was weak. That's
a problem, by the way, for wealthy countries throughout the world.
Even Japan's having trouble creating jobs now. But look what's
happened since I announced my plan and it started to
pass its way through Congress. Just in the last four
or five months. First, we've had seven hundred and fifty

(01:17:46):
five thousand new jobs in this economy, over ninety percent
of them in the private sector, in the first four
months of this administration. In the previous four years, we
only had a million jobs. Second, in construction part of
the economy very affected by interest rates. In the first
four months we had one hundred and thirty thousand new jobs.

(01:18:07):
That's the biggest increase in nine years. Is that affected
every state, in every community yet, No, But it shows
that we are really moving in the right direction. If
we can get everybody in this country to refinance their
home loans, their business loans, to take available credit because
interest rates are lower, that will put tens of billions
of dollars back into this economy to create jobs.

Speaker 6 (01:18:29):
What we all sat inflation rates, Sir, I don't mean
to interrupt you, but we're sure. I tell the flation
rate would you be happy with one year from now.

Speaker 62 (01:18:37):
The lowest possible one.

Speaker 6 (01:18:39):
But if we got in if we got.

Speaker 62 (01:18:41):
Unemployment down to a very low level, and every American
had a job, it might be a tad higher than
it is now. But but we have no right now,
we think we're in good shape on inflation. What we
need in America are more jobs and higher incomes, and
that's what we're working on. So this is a job
creating strategy we're following, and I believe it will work.

Speaker 7 (01:19:03):
President Clinton did not want to be pinned down there
who mcinernie, the car dealer as not a political issue
but a business one, frequently appeared on the program to
talk about the major industry in Detroit's toot.

Speaker 6 (01:19:15):
Mcin ernie Mega automobile dealer. Has there been a spurred
in sales, a spike up in the week following the
auto show?

Speaker 3 (01:19:21):
Who, Joseph, It always does. It's historically every time we
have we've got on the Auto show. During the Auto Show,
we don't just so many cars because people are all
down there showing. Traffic falls off. But then right after
that the l next two or three weeks after that
they come flocking in and you get a lot of traffic.
And then after you have this three or four days

(01:19:42):
of big traffic, you wonder what takes going on. You're
puting a lot of prices, and then all of a
sudden it hits right in ten, fifteen, twenty twenty five
deals a day.

Speaker 7 (01:19:50):
So it still works, It sure.

Speaker 3 (01:19:51):
Does, and especially this good weather that we've.

Speaker 7 (01:19:53):
Been having celebrating J. P. McCarthy on radio, it's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 2 (01:19:58):
Elon Musk is losing his XAI partner Igor Babushkin, who
led the engineering teams along with helping to launch Xai

pledged to keep doing all that it can to make
end to end encrypted communication available to people everywhere, including
in Russia. Tech Report.

Speaker 26 (01:20:56):
I'm Martneyfield.

Speaker 7 (01:21:01):
You're hearing a lot about the Gordy How Bridge that's
connecting Windsor and Detroit, and well, there was a guy
called Gordy How. He was the greatest of them all,
the hockey player for the Red Wings and other teams too,
and he joined J. P. McCarthy on the radio.

Speaker 6 (01:21:17):
Gordy how number nine, the guy who has played for
the Red Wings for twenty five years and the greatest
star in hockey.

Speaker 8 (01:21:23):
We read, is it quitting? It's true, No, retiring sounds better.
That's true. Though when did you decide?

Speaker 31 (01:21:33):
Uh my own mind? I think quite a while ago.
It's uh, I've been thinking about many things, that said.

Speaker 5 (01:21:41):
The only good thing this.

Speaker 31 (01:21:43):
At the end of the last year, got real serious
about thinking one, and everybody's asked me, you know, so
I marked down the rights and the wrongs. And then
I was with you during the Plumb Hollow golf holding,
and I mentioned some of the act about uh the
love of the competitive end of the game. I said

(01:22:05):
that it had decreased quite a bit from what I
originally thought, and a lot of things I used to
UH do last year I'd never dream of during the
day of a game. So all this was a relatively
the way I thought, and and I think, uh. The
only two points of interest would be if I did play,

(01:22:26):
it would be one from a selfish point of view
of trying to get more goals, and then UH retain
my image as far as uh fanfare in uh game
of hockey, and then the other would be money. Yeah,
and uh, I didn't I didn't think this would uh
this value was worth the efforts of possibly getting injured

(01:22:47):
for the rest of my life or going against the
wishes of a lot of people, and uh including my
mother in the way that uh she said, please get
out of the game before you really permanently her because
she really eyes that a few weeks we spent at
her near the end of her life, that my wrist
was giving me trouble, And a lot of people's flakes

(01:23:08):
just think it's a whole risk, but it's there's a
million other reasons.

Speaker 7 (01:23:12):
Gordie Howe broke hockey records, General Chuck Yeger broke the
sound barrier.

Speaker 6 (01:23:18):
Juicy top gun.

Speaker 5 (01:23:19):
Yeah, I like it. Yeah, the photography was great, man,
and I enjoyed the frying with those guys last about
two seconds.

Speaker 6 (01:23:26):
In a real war, would they really You wouldn't want
Maverick is your wing man?

Speaker 17 (01:23:34):
No, No, it's the way it takes a lot of
You don't hang around anymore with missiles. You know you
you hit and get out. You don't fool around. The
upside down and you know what, that was good entertainment,
but it's not a documentary.

Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
INVC News Radio, I'm Mark Mayfield. President Trump won't share
any possible deals he may have in mind when he
meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska today. Trump said,
this is the first step.

Speaker 41 (01:24:13):
I think it's going to be a good meeting. But
the more important meeting will be the second meeting.

Speaker 8 (01:24:17):
That we're having.

Speaker 41 (01:24:17):
We're going to have a meeting with President Putin, President
Zelenski myself.

Speaker 2 (01:24:22):
Reports have been rampant regarding Russia Ukraine land swaps and
the possibility of the US offering Russia a rare earth
mineral deal if it leads to peace. When asked at
the White House, Trump would only say, we'll see what happens.
Former President Barack Obama is supporting Texas Democrats who left
the state to block a GOP redistricting plan. In a
virtual meeting Thursday, Obama told the Texas lawmakers that their

(01:24:44):
actions were inspiring others. Obama said, we can't let a
systematic assault on democracy just happen. And because of your courage,
what you've seen is California responding and other states looking
at what they can do to offset this mid decade jerrymandering.
Texas Representative gen Wu said Obamas and Horsement was proof
that they have supportive Democrats at every level. There's an
update in the criminal case involving South Texas Congressman Henry Quohar.

Speaker 28 (01:25:08):
Brian Shook reports court records show that two of the
fourteen counts have been dropped against him and his wife.
The pair still face charges of conspiracy, bribery, and money laundering.
The Democratic lawmaker is accused of accepting cash in exchange
for supporting the interests of both an energy company controlled
by the Azerbaijan government and a bank in Mexico. He

(01:25:30):
and his wife have pleaded not guilty. I'm Brian Shook.

Speaker 2 (01:25:33):
And Tropical storm Erin is close to becoming a hurricane.
Maximum sustained wins seventy miles per hour as of the
latest update, with the storm expected to become the first
hurricane of the twenty twenty five Atlantic season. The National
Hurricane Center expects Aaron to reach hurricane strength within hours.
It's still unclear if Aaron will have any impact on
the US East Coast. You are listening to the latest

(01:25:54):
from NBC News Radio.

Speaker 38 (01:25:56):
New York City's mayor says the water in Central Harlem
is safe to breathe and drink. Following a deadly Legionaire's
outbreak in five zip codes, Ninety two people have been
diagnosed with the pneumonia like disease in the past three weeks,
with three deaths and fifteen New Yorkers still hospitalized. Acting
Health Commissioner Michelle Moore said the good news is that

(01:26:19):
cases are declining.

Speaker 21 (01:26:20):
Legionnaire's disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics when it
is diagnosed early.

Speaker 38 (01:26:25):
Doctor Moore said that anyone with flu like symptoms, cough, fever,
or difficulty breathing in the affected zip codes should seek
medical treatment immediately. Drought and ocean patterns are largely being
driven by human activity. That's according to a new study
published in Nature. Greenhouse gas emissions generated by humans, the
study says, may have locked in a climate pattern responsible

(01:26:49):
for long term megadrought across the western US. Health update.
I'm Sarah Lee Kessler.

Speaker 7 (01:27:22):
Well I mentioned you can get the J. P. McCarthy book.
It's JP McCarthy. Just don't tell them where I am
at Amazon dot com. Written by Michael Patrick Shields It's
the first book I ever wrote and launched my career
as an author and columnist, and so I owe so
much to JP McCarthy, and we celebrate his legacy on
this day, and we celebrate radio on this day too,

(01:27:44):
and I wouldn't have had a radio career without him either,
So thank you JP. And of course, if you look
on the back of that JP McCarthy book, you'll see
an endorsement from the great and I mean fantastic author,
the late Elmore Dutch Leonard, who had not just something
like sixty novels having been a copywriter in the auto business,

(01:28:07):
and a lot of those books were made into movies.
And I still to this day I'm good friends with
dutch Leonard's researcher Greg Sutter. Here's J. P. McCarthy and Dutch.

Speaker 6 (01:28:18):
Well, it's always great fun to see you and great
fun to sort of enjoy your success with you.

Speaker 2 (01:28:26):
You've loved it, have you.

Speaker 63 (01:28:28):
I'm having a good time, yes, very good time.

Speaker 6 (01:28:30):
Started out as a copywriter at Camblee Wall a few
years ago.

Speaker 63 (01:28:35):
Actually I was writing and selling stories before I was
a copywriter, but yes, I was for seven years at
Camberley Wall.

Speaker 6 (01:28:45):
What was your greatest copy line you worked on the
Chevy account.

Speaker 63 (01:28:52):
There was a billboard, there was a barrel, and there
were monkeys coming out of the barrel, and there was
a Chevrolet logo on the on the barrel, and the
line was more fun I like, I mean seven years
that was it.

Speaker 7 (01:29:12):
And just see how casual he was with some of
these giant greats, even mister Mike Ilitch who was the
founder of Little Caesar's Pizza and owned the Red Wings
and the Tigers.

Speaker 64 (01:29:23):
You know, everybody prefers it to be downtown because people
haven't seen the stadiums. When you talk about a stadium,
they think a stadium the way they know it. But
very few people have seen in no new stadiums to
see the synergies that they throw off. And it's very
hard to talk about it unless you've actually seen it.

Speaker 6 (01:29:40):
So I like Cleveland and Baltimore.

Speaker 64 (01:29:42):
Yeah right, I mean, if you know they they take
your breath away and then there's a lot of activity
that develops around them. And I don't want to throw
out stats now, but you know it's so that's that's
really what we need from the standpoint of, you know,
just a jump start for it. He tried, it would
really be a good thing, but.

Speaker 6 (01:29:59):
Well, okay, let's get a new stadium in the sooner
the better. I will look forward to seeing you in
January at the Joe Louis Arena, and of course on
the seventeenth of March on Saint Patrick's Day at the
Fox Theater for our annual party.

Speaker 29 (01:30:14):
Well, great JP, My love to marry in and yeah,
same good duty.

Speaker 64 (01:30:17):
I don't know if anybody mentioned your great wife today,
but I know she's been an awful lot of support
for you through the.

Speaker 6 (01:30:22):
Years, without question. Yeah, thanks Michael very much for calling.

Speaker 8 (01:30:25):
Alrighty Grayson, Merry Christmas him.

Speaker 7 (01:30:28):
And that was Comerica Park they were talking about, which
ended up right across the street from the theater he
was speaking about. It was northern Michigan that became a
cathedral of golf, and one of the people who helped
make that happen was the great Arnold Palmer.

Speaker 8 (01:30:44):
We hope to see a lot of you in Michigan.

Speaker 6 (01:30:47):
This particular area from Traverse City right up through Harbor
Springs is kind of interconnected now as you know, there's
some fine golf courses up here, and the fondest hope
of the people involved is to make this and don't laugh,
sort of a hilton Head or a Pinehurst of the North,
if you will. And that's not such crazy idea, really.

Speaker 7 (01:31:07):
I don't think it is at all.

Speaker 32 (01:31:08):
I think it's a beautiful place to come in the summer,
and you know, even in the winter you want to
do a little skiing.

Speaker 6 (01:31:14):
I guess the skiing is coming along too, and absolutely
it's great skiing. You can get up and down the
lifts in a hurried The hills and the runs aren't
as long as Colorado, but guess what, they're.

Speaker 9 (01:31:25):
Just as steep, and you get in more runs and
you fall just as hardy.

Speaker 24 (01:31:29):
Make all the snow you want too.

Speaker 7 (01:31:33):
These things all came to pass. Passing through every once
in a while was Soupy Sales, who came home to
Detroit and always visited with JP.

Speaker 6 (01:31:42):
My first guest in Focus started in television in Detroit
thirty years ago, a couple of more than thirty ago.
Since then, he has been on every single television entertainment
show and game show there ever was.

Speaker 65 (01:31:55):
Well when I'm drunk ever will be placed.

Speaker 6 (01:31:58):
Looking at the list of the television Soupy has appeared on,
it's like looking at the Manhattan Telephone directord. This goes
on and on and on, as irrepressible, as indefatigable as ever,
and just as surely follows winter, there will always be
a thank you, welcome back to town, Thank you JP.

Speaker 65 (01:32:16):
And first, before we do anything else, you did a
thing I came when I came in to promote my
book last May. You did a thing that I really
haven't forgotten about, and I wanted to thank you personally
for when we went to the charity thing at the
Henry Ford Auditorium where they showed the world premiere of

(01:32:37):
Beverly Hills Cop Too, and you introduced me from the audience,
and that's one of the big thrills in my life.
That was the ovation that I got. And I really
personally want to thank you for doing that with my pleasure.

Speaker 6 (01:32:51):
But why would that surprise you. They have loved you
in Detroit since since you were doing the Soupy Noontime show.

Speaker 65 (01:32:57):
I know, but that was just it was just really
it was like it was I guess it was a
reminder that maybe people hadn't forgotten, you know. I guess
it was just so nice.

Speaker 13 (01:33:04):
You know.

Speaker 65 (01:33:05):
Of course with Ed McNamar here, and I was thinking
when the seven years I was here, Mayor Cobo gave
me a key to the city and Mayor Mary Annie.
Of course they changed the locks afterwards, but.

Speaker 6 (01:33:20):
How sweet.

Speaker 7 (01:33:21):
And of course Fat Bob Taylor, the Singing Plumber became
a star and a funny man who contributed in his
own way to the J. P. McCarthy Show with some laughs,
otherwise known as Missus Pennyfeather. Here, I blew the lid.

Speaker 6 (01:33:37):
Off the secret Pennyfeather. Your old friend Eddie checks in
from the Blue Star Home. How are you, sweetheart?

Speaker 12 (01:33:43):
Well, I'm trying to How are you nice.

Speaker 6 (01:33:45):
To hear the sound of Eddie's voice?

Speaker 12 (01:33:47):
Not particularly anyway. How are you you're celebrating this week,
are you?

Speaker 6 (01:33:53):
I guess so. Yeah, it was kind of nice. Actually,
I'm hanging around trying to keep my nose clean. It's
what I'm doing.

Speaker 12 (01:33:59):
That's that's a nice thing about you. You're such a
good boy, and you.

Speaker 4 (01:34:02):
Do those things.

Speaker 6 (01:34:03):
Thank you, thank you things well at the.

Speaker 12 (01:34:05):
Home, Oh yes, yes, we're getting rather for Christmas across
a holidays and everything, got the tree up and the
manual for Christmas Day and making cookies.

Speaker 6 (01:34:16):
You sound like you have a little cold.

Speaker 2 (01:34:17):
You have a little cold, Yes.

Speaker 11 (01:34:19):
I do.

Speaker 12 (01:34:19):
Isn't that? In fact, it's it's because I went to
the football game with a group of seniors on Sunday.

Speaker 6 (01:34:26):
Did you go to the Lions game?

Speaker 8 (01:34:27):
Yes, we did.

Speaker 6 (01:34:29):
It's quite a good game, wasn't it.

Speaker 12 (01:34:30):
Well, we thought so, so, yeah, did.

Speaker 6 (01:34:35):
You? Ladies? Don't don't holler and scream and wave things
at the camera so that you'll be on the television
there in the in the Silver Dome, do you?

Speaker 12 (01:34:42):
Well, of course we do, although that's nobody said. We
had wonderful times at the game in the way. I'm
so pleased that they're commemorating and celebrating for your wonderful
young man.

Speaker 6 (01:34:59):
Making a big deal out of it, don't you think.

Speaker 7 (01:35:01):
Well, Eddie the actor there was they were referring to,
and they said Eddie who was another character, little Philip Marlowe.

Speaker 11 (01:35:09):
Okay, it was last spring I first started to feel tired,
kind of like I was getting old, And maybe it
was a rotten weather we've been having, or maybe the
rotten cases I've been getting mostly tracking down a couple
of missing husbands and then once I found him tracking
down their wives in order to get paid. Yeah, maybe

(01:35:32):
I'm tired, Groano. The only pleasure I've had lately is
listen to J. P. McCarthy whacking that apple and an incredible
clip on WHJI radio. Congratulations, Eddie, you got It's.

Speaker 6 (01:35:46):
Good to hear from me, Eddie. Thank you for scilla.

NBC News Radio, I'm Mark Mayfield. The one on one
summit between President Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin is happening
today in Alaska. White House correspondent John Decker says Trump's
goals are clear.

Speaker 45 (01:38:13):
Is that this does pave the way for a second meeting,
a second summit, and then ultimately an end to the
war after three years of fighting.

Speaker 2 (01:38:21):
Decker says there's a lot of uncertainty about what the
mood will be like when the two leaders meet. Trump
has said he'll know right away what Putin's intentions are,
and if he feels Putin wants to end the war,
he'll stay. If Trump believes he has no interest in
ending the bloodshed, he'll exit quickly. Aeric Canada is grounding

to hear his voice on the radio right now. He
himself a great broadcaster because he was the stadium announcer

(01:40:09):
for the Philadelphia seventy six ers, and he is an
Eagles fan as well too. Welcome back to the airways.
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio.

Speaker 57 (01:40:20):
I am right back here where I belong on Friday
mornings with the greatness of MPs and Michigan's Big Show.
So it's terrific to be back with you.

Speaker 7 (01:40:28):
Thank you very much. We've been reading about the Eagles
as football season starts up now, and there are people
who actually do bet on preseason, which is surprising to
all of us. But nevertheless, if you were to go
to game at Lincoln Financial Field, they're talking about the prices.
Let's just say Jim Wise was there and he wanted

(01:40:48):
to get a can of Miller Lite beer. If this
was the price is right, and you have prices right
slot machines at fire keepers, would the price of a
can of Miller Light beer be under or over fifteen dollars?

Speaker 57 (01:41:02):
The answer is over, sir. Now it is. It is
a whatever, whether they call them a tall tall or
a longer or a bigger can, but the price that
they get for it is to be modest outrageous. Yes,
And you know what, I'd love to I'd love to
blame the Eagles, but I've been to a Phillies playoff
game and it was the same price. But goret Ahead
disclosed this baggering.

Speaker 7 (01:41:23):
Figure eighteen dollars and fifty cents for the can. And
you might as well drink beer, because a large soda
is twelve dollars and fifty cents. And let's see single
serving of chicken cutlets seven ninety nine. That sounds like
a bargain, But crab fries are seventeen fifty. Oh, the

(01:41:45):
cutlets in the stadium there are seventeen dollars. So they
want to get a can of beer and some chicken,
it's thirty five fifty thirty five.

Speaker 57 (01:41:53):
Or a modest comb equity loan.

Speaker 7 (01:41:58):
Well, you know, the most of the stadiums are about
the same anyway, and that's why when you come to
FireKeepers Casina, you get much friendlier pricing, don't you for
a dinner?

Speaker 57 (01:42:08):
We do. And interestingly, since we're speaking of beer, I
can tell you that where I believe right now doing
a promotion with Yingling beer, Yes, and three of their
different varieties, and we're right now the exclusive casino pouring Yingling,
and so we're excited to do that deal with them
and to bring their product onto our property and give

(01:42:30):
our guests an opportunity to enjoy it. It's a kind
of a traditional Pennsylvania brand that is certainly popular and
expanding outward, and so people can, in addition to getting
their Vegas on, then get their Yingling on at fire
Keepers right now.

Speaker 7 (01:42:46):
Yngling followed Jim Wise to the Midwest. It took a
little while, but finally he brought the beer. Because dreams
come true at fire Keepers and for those beer drinkers
who have been just always like a ken to get it,
and otherwise they had to bootleg it, you know, and
smuggle it across state line.

Speaker 57 (01:43:04):
Where to get it on the wagon train.

Speaker 7 (01:43:08):
Or in a big truck with Jerry Reid and a
hound dog and Burt Reynolds and the trans am. Yeah,
Smokey and the Bandit. By the way, happy anniversary. I
can't believe it's sixteen years of fire Keeper's Casino and
you're going to celebrate with an exponential number of sixteen.

Speaker 57 (01:43:27):
We are. We have a huge promo. You know, we're
known for having huge promotions at the end of every month,
but this is kind of the middle of the month,
and we have a monster going on tomorrow, Like you
want to win cash and free slot play. We're giving
away one hundred and sixty thousand dollars worth of it
as part of our sixteenth anniversary. So tomorrow we're calling

(01:43:49):
it sixteenth Anniversary Prize Palooza, and that means again one
hundred and sixty thousand between cash and free play. It
starts at two o'clock in the afternoon to winter will
win twenty five hundred dollars cash and twenty five hundred
dollars red Hot credits. And let's keep moving up because
at four o'clock it's two winners of five and five,

(01:44:09):
at six o'clock two winners of seventy five hundred and
seventy five hundred. Eight o'clock ten and ten for two winners,
that's cash and free play. And at ten o'clock, two winners,
not one, two winners fifteen thousand dollars cash and fifteen
thousand dollars in Red Hot credits. Huge prizes were given

(01:44:30):
away tomorrow, and there's no second things. You don't have
to shoot a bow and arrow or pick a number
from one to one thousand, and we call your name
and you have earned any points on your that Hot
Rewards card in the month of August, or you just
come and earn them tomorrow. You could take home some
huge prizes.

Speaker 7 (01:44:48):
This is supposed to be an anniversary party for fire Keepers,
and you're the one giving away all the gifts.

Speaker 57 (01:44:54):
We are, and you know what we should, because it's
our guests who have made us the great success that
we've been for sixteen years. So yes, they deserve the
lion's share of sharing it yes, we have awesome team
members who deliver for diamond service and a great tribal
owner in the Natawa Seppi hereon band of the Potawatomy.

(01:45:17):
But it's all about our guests and we're so thrilled
for them that yes, we're giving that stuff away. We're
giving away one hundred and sixty thousand dollars tomorrow in
cash and prices.

Speaker 7 (01:45:28):
Well, listen, if you want to give back to fire Keepers,
something you can do is what we've been doing. We've
been marshaling the vote through USA today to make fire
Keepers win the contest to be the best casino outside
Las Vegas. And there is no question if you get
your Vegas on, FireKeepers is the place to do it.
So we're crossing our fingers that you will be in

(01:45:49):
the USA today. They're making a top ten list in
different categories and that's one where you can surely celebrate.
So congratulations to you and welcome back to the airwaves.
Any comment on that is anything we need to know,
we can go to your socials.

Speaker 57 (01:46:04):
R Yeah, I head the fire Keepers Facebook page and
get that link, and I'd be speechless if people were
kind enough to take a minute and do that and
vote for us to vote on behalf of our staff
and tribe because we'd love to win that honor and
be in the top ten. So I think there's only
four or five days left for that.

Speaker 7 (01:46:25):
Vote now, and it's easy. I've done it. Of course,
when it comes to healthcare costs, we often focus on
one thing, our insurance premiums. But what if we're only
seeing part of the picture. The truth is our health
insurance costs reside downstream at the end of the cost equation.
But to really understand what's driving up costs, we need
to look upstream to the healthcare system itself. Upstream, there

(01:46:48):
are costs like the price is charged by hospitals and doctors,
and the cost of prescription drugs, healthcare administration, and technology.
These costs flow downstream directly into your health insurance premium.
That's why Blue Cross Blue Shield the Michigan is advocating
for a system wide solution to address the rising cost
of healthcare. Blue Cross knows that healthcare is personal, needs

(01:47:12):
to work for everyone, and affordability matters, and that starts
with shedding light on the entire cost equation, from upstream
costs to downstream premiums. Want To learn more, visit miblueedaily

Speaker 14 (01:47:28):
Let's start with baseball.

Speaker 52 (01:47:30):
The Mets slide continues fall to the Braves in New
York Asie Albie's.

Speaker 14 (01:47:34):
Homer drove in three for Atlanta.

Speaker 52 (01:47:36):
Mets have dropped thirteen of their last fifteen, and manager
Carlos Mendoza talks about what is going wrong for the team.

Speaker 53 (01:47:45):
We just haven't been able to put everything together. You know,
whenever we're getting the offense, we're not getting starting pitching.
Today we got starting pitching. We got some timely hitting,
even though we didn't create much traffic, but then we
couldn't close it out.

Speaker 52 (01:47:58):
Met's now just a half game up on the Reds
for the final wildcard spot in the National League.

Speaker 14 (01:48:04):
Let's try this again.

Speaker 52 (01:48:05):
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who's dealing with an aggravated disc
in his back, will work out Saturday, just like last week.
Week two of the NFL preseason kicks off tonight. Falcons
take on the Titans. Chiefs visit the Seahawks. Quarterback Aaron
Rodgers will not play when the Steelers play the Bucks Saturday.
That's sports.

Speaker 14 (01:48:26):
I'm Ronza Moss.

Speaker 7 (01:49:01):
Let's talk some sports this morning. But first, you know,
we were talking about some of the weird characters on
the J. P. McCarthy Show. This was a newsmaker and
a weird character, doctor Death Jack Kevorkian.

Speaker 68 (01:49:13):
Well, well, of course that's that would satisfy anybody's ego,
but it also makes you feel a little uneasy deep done.
I think anybody who vaults into that position feels a
little unworthy of it inside the I think I.

Speaker 6 (01:49:25):
Was the one who stuck the sobriquette Doctor Death on you.
How do you wear that?

Speaker 8 (01:49:31):
I mean, so you were those I think it was
you want me to.

Speaker 7 (01:49:34):
So you were the one. That's eerie man. One hall
of famer Back to sports and another Hall of famer.

Speaker 11 (01:49:41):
J P.

Speaker 7 (01:49:41):
McCarthy with the voice of the Tigers. Ernie Harwell.

Speaker 6 (01:49:46):
Ernie Harwell, the beloved voice of the Detroit Tigers, fated
last night as the Man of the Year by father
Phelps' life achievement groups up very early this morning. Congratulations Aran, oh, thank.

Speaker 17 (01:50:00):
You, Joe, and congratulations Steel on your great career.

Speaker 6 (01:50:03):
Ernie.

Speaker 2 (01:50:03):
What were you?

Speaker 6 (01:50:04):
Thank you very much. What were you doing forty eight
years ago today? Pearl Harbor Day?

Speaker 17 (01:50:07):
Do you remember Pearl Harbor Day? I was in Atlanta
and we lived in an apartment house with Doug Edwards,
who later became a great newscaster on CBS, and we
were sort of lolling around on a Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon,
and I remember Doug right down the hall got a
call from the station to come on in because something

(01:50:28):
had happened, and he came over and told us about it.
It was certainly an event that turned everybody's life around.

Speaker 11 (01:50:35):
Huh.

Speaker 6 (01:50:35):
Credable that it was forty eight years ago today, because
you're right, and it did change the world forever, It
sure did.

Speaker 17 (01:50:40):
And I know that I had gone to the draft
board and ask him, you know, if war was eminently anything,
I wanted to get married, and they said Oh no,
don't worry about it. You go ahead get married. I
got married in August and here comes old pearl arbor.

Speaker 6 (01:50:56):
Were you in the service?

Speaker 5 (01:50:57):
Yeah, I was in the marine for four years.

Speaker 6 (01:50:59):
Were really do? Were you overseas?

Speaker 17 (01:51:01):
Yep? Where I was in China? I was in Guam.
I was at Wake Island when they surrendered. I was
at a little island called Millie and ended up in
China and came back in nineteen forty six.

Speaker 6 (01:51:12):
You know, I thought I'd heard every aspect of Ernie
Harwell's life, and this morning I hear something new. I
never knew that you were in the service in World
War Two. Never knew you were a marine and overseas
and all those exotic destinations. That's incredible.

Speaker 7 (01:51:28):
Your very history and radio history celebrated this morning. And
you can hear it all over again and share all
the segments at MIBiG show dot com. And there's more
to come next hour with Michael Patrick Shields
