Speaker 1 (00:05):
Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthberts.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lansing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Michael Patrick Shields is on the air.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Good morning World, Good Morning Michigan.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Welcome back to Michigan's Big Show starring Michael Patrick Shields.
It is March Madness Week here in the United States
of America. Thursday and Friday probably two of the least
productive work days of the entire year, as people go
to their live stream or their phones and check in

(01:02):
on the games as they go on. And yesterday we
had Graham Couch to help me fill out my bracket,
and today inviting another friend to help me out. Hondo Carpenter,
a great friend of this program who worked or who
covers Los Angeles Raiders but has Las Vegas Raiders. My apologies,
but has covered Michigan state sports for years and years, Hondo,

(01:25):
thanks for joining.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Us, Hi buddy, how are you? And I'm still the
editor over all of our Michigan state coverage at SI.
And I'll tell you what, this is the best time
of year. If you love sports, how do you not
love this time?

Speaker 4 (01:39):
I loved watching South Alabama yesterday in the first four games,
the first game of the entire season, and watch that
heave half court with no time left, basically, and somehow
the ball got into the net.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
That was pretty sweet.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
And then but I wanted to talk to you about
North Carolina because I know there was some hubbub about
North Carolina making the tournament and they went in and
just completely annihilated whoever the heck that was that they
were playing. And I'm concerned that they may make it
to the sweet sixteen against State.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
I really don't want that matchup, do you.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I'm not afraid of that matchup at all. In fact,
I'm going to tell you no, when you look at
the South region, you'll appreciate this. I was on a
national television program last night talking about the NCAA tournament,
and I talked about it all being matchups, and so
I'll give you an example. Auburn and Creighton in this
South Regional are not good matchups for Michigan State, but

(02:37):
Michigan is not a good matchup for either one of
those in Michigan is a great matchup for Michigan State.
It's just all styles of play and how teams play.
It's the fascinating part of the tournament that is so
under discussed. When you look at North Carolina, they're very talented,

(02:59):
but there is a lot of entitlement on that team.
You don't see you know, you see the effort turning
on and off. One thing that I respect about Tom
is those teams is they have games where they play poorly,
but you never question their effort. The effort is always there.
And when you know, through my years of covering Tom

(03:19):
and my relationship with Tom, one of the things he's
always talked about publicly and privately is that you control
your effort, and if your effort's good all the time,
you have more bad days and good same way, whether
it's Yukawu does such a terrific job, or any of
us in any walk of life. If our efforts there

(03:39):
every day, you're going to count on more good days
than bad days. And that's how Michigan State plays. North
Carolina doesn't, and they play with a sense of entitlement.
And one of the things that I find fascinating is
teams like that, not just North Carolina, but teams I've
seen like that over the years. They don't know how
to respond when to get punched in the face. They

(04:02):
don't know how to take it. Mike Tyson and I
were talking one time. I was interviewing him for Sports Illustrated,
and he talked about that he always had game plans,
he always had how he wanted to fight. He said,
but I used to love it when they would get
a great punch in early. And I kind of looked
at him, and he goes, you're looking at me like I'm crazy.
But hear me out and I said, okay. He said,

(04:24):
when they gave me their best punch and I kept coming,
I could see their will to fight go away, and
he goes, He goes, I loved it when they would
just rock me early because they knew, now you're not
you can't take my best punch, but I can take yours.
And that's that's a Michigan state mentality. I really like that,

(04:47):
and I think that this is a very good bracket
for Michigan State. Okay, and for Michigan. Let me be
very blunt. I think it's a great you're you're all
over the state of Michigan. I think Wolverine fans today
should be happy.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
So you see, San Diego is a fashionable pick. I
have them beating Michigan.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, I don't think that's a good Michigan. I don't
think that's a good matchup for Michigan. Isn't that amazing?
I think Michigan matches up better with Auburn the one
seed than they do with San Diego the twelve. Oh
that's what That's what makes the NCAA tournament so amazing.
I am not a wine drinker, but one of the
things I have a friend who is who works in

(05:28):
that field, and he talks about matching wines with foods.
I don't understand it. I don't get it. I love dusties,
but I don't understand it. And so but he talks
about and when he was explaining it to me, he said,
it's when you talk about matchups, and he just goes,
some wines are there great wines, but they don't go
with certain foods. There are some styles of place so

(05:50):
San Diego does not is a nightmare matchup for Michigan.
If they get past that, I think they have a
great shot to get to the regional final, which is
a we mean to get to the Elite eight. But
I just think that's what makes this tournament just absolutely
so much fun.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
North Carolina. Do they beat Ole miss or not?

Speaker 3 (06:11):
I don't. Again, you don't know which team you're going
to get if it's the talented one. If it's the
talented one, sure, but you've watched them all year lose
games when they had more talent. There's a saying that
that tom Izo likes to say that hard work beats
talent when talent doesn't work hard, and that's the North
Carolina team. I could see North Carolina and that's why

(06:34):
there's so much controversy. They shouldn't be in this tournament.
Their athletic director was president of the selection committee, and
I know he had to refuse himself, but he goes
and gets a massive six figure bonus because his team
gets in its appearance. This is why the NCAA is
the most corrupt or gonna, let me rephrase it is

(06:55):
the most disreputable organization in my opinion, this side of Congress.
It's terrible. That's why they need to have people on
this committee who aren't connected to any school. Get some
retired coaches, get get people and you know, former players,
but get it. Get away from that because you don't.
It's not that I think there was impropriety, but it's

(07:17):
you don't. You don't want the hint of it. And
but I know North Carolina is going to have somebody
ring their bell. It could be the next game. It
could be a Michigan State, it could be a Michigan somebody.
If you watch them play, someone is going to ring
their bell and they're going to collapse. They're not a
tough football team, I mean a tough basketball team.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Your final four is what.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Boy, that's a tough one. But I appreciate you asking,
So I'm going the first thing is I think Duke
you know, is a team that's absolutely going to get
out of the East. I just love the way they play.
I love the toughness and the way they play, and
I like the way that they handle themselves. But when
you when you when you move over, when you find
yourself in the Midwest. I think there are so many

(08:03):
different teams there. Now I'm going to give you one
that's going to surprise you a little bit. I think
Illinois is a tough football team. I mean I see
say basketball. Yes, I think Illinois is a very tough team.
That's going to be a very difficult matchup for some
teams because they're they're going to take some punches. I'll
give you another team that people aren't talking about is Gonzaga.

(08:27):
I like those but if I had to pick one
out of that term that that portion of the thing,
I'm going to probably go with Illinois, which I know
will surprise some people, but there's always a surprise. I'm
going to give you a name that's going to shock
a lot of people when you go across the bracket.
Is Saint Mary's. I love that team. I love the
way they play. I like the toughness in which they play.

(08:49):
So I think Saint Mary's comes out of the West.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Saint Mary's.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Well, thank you very much, Hondo Carpenter and Sports Illustrated.
