Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthberts.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lancing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Let me ask you something. If someone prays for patience,
you think God gives them patience or does he give
them the opportunity to be patient? Is it prayed for
courage that's got you courage or does it give them
opportunities to be courageous. If someone prayed for family to
be closer, do you think God's absent with warm, fuzzy
feelings or does he give them opportunities to love each other?
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Michael Patrick shield is on.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
The air Good Morning World, continuing coverage of the hideous
murder yesterday of Charlie Kirk on our at and T Line.
Jason Russell, a former Secret Service agent, founder of Secure
Education Consultants in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where were heard on WTKG.
(01:21):
Very sorry about the circumstances, but thank you for your expertise.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yeah, happy to help.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
We in Muskegon, where we're heard on WKBZ and Lansing
WJIM Brianna Scott is a trustee at Michigan State University
and an attorney. She posted a question yesterday and said,
I'm persuaded by facts only. So if the assassin of
Charlie Kirk is still at large, why has everyone determined
this senseless crime to have been politically motivated? How would
(01:52):
you answer that question?
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Yeah, I mean, I guess because you'd want to use logic.
You know what else would it be motivated by? It
doesn't really make any sense, and that it wouldn't be
something related to kind of the work that he does
in the message that he sends, and I think that's
probably the most logical reason for his assassination.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
My fear, and this is something that really scares me.
Is is possible that we might never find out who
the shooter was?
Speaker 4 (02:27):
It's possible. I don't think it's likely. I mean, I
think with the amount of cameras and the amount of
technology that's available, and you know, I think it's probably
it might take a while. And I think yesterday the
FBI kind of fumbled things a little bit when they said,
we have somebody in custody, and now we don't have
somebody in custody, and those you know, that tends to
(02:48):
like eroad people's trust in what we're doing. I do
think that hopefully they will they'll have somebody in custody,
and hopefully it'll be fairly soon. I think the evidence
isn't going to get much better beyond the first you know,
forty eight to seventy two hours, so especially in this situation,
I think hopefully they'll they'll have some good leads and
they'll get somebody in custody quickly.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
Did you see that video that's been going around of
a person walking on the rooftop before the event.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I think that one's been circulating
quite a bit. And if you look, if you saw
how they they had crime tape, you know, and then
that seemed to be the roof that they were concentrating
on with the crime tape. They didn't have crime tape
on any other roofs. And if you look at the
angle of the shot, that building makes sense. The shot
hit him on his left side, which would be kind
of from that angle, so I think that's where they
(03:39):
were concentrating and figuring the shooter probably was likely located.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
Does it surprise you that someone was able to go
up on that roof and also exist on that roof
and the people in that video found it unusual, but
I guess didn't tell anybody.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, you know, can remind you of obviously of Butler,
Pennsylvania a little bit. But I think the issue you're
dealing with here is, you know, Charlie Kirk is a
private citizen, so he's not getting the resources that you
give to know somebody like the president, the vice president,
or even a former president or even quite frankly, a
member of Congress in some cases. So everything that's being
(04:20):
done in terms of security is being done by local police,
which they're not necessarily trained in these types of situations,
or a private security that's just traveling with him. So
it doesn't surprise me that those areas weren't covered, given
the lack of resources that would be available in a
situation like this. But obviously, you know, anytime you're in
(04:42):
a lower position right where you have raised positions on
all sides of you. That's an extremely dangerous situation to
be and you never want to be in a situation
where you have high ground and you're kind of in
a bowl with all these abilities to observe you from overhead.
So just a bad security situation all around.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
We spoke with a former military sniper earlier and he
said that the shot was very easy, that you could
teach someone to do that in less than a day,
and they could buy the rifle at the you know,
bass pro shops or whatever. It didn't look easy to me,
but I don't know anything about weapons. Was it that
(05:22):
easy to put that scope on his head and shoot
him in the neck from two hundred yards away on
an elevated position over a crowd under a tent by
the way.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's an incredibly difficult shot.
If somebody has trained on you know, he's using a
stable position because he's likely using the edge of the
building there, so there's not a lot of movement of
the rifle, and it's just a matter of trigger control
and having you know, your sits kind of dialed in.
(05:54):
Probably I think that he actually probably didn't intend to
hit him in the neck. My guess is he probably
intended hit him in the head, and actually his shot
was off, still ended up being a fatal shot, but
I don't think that that was the intent. And from
that raised position, you'd have likely have a really clear
view obviously had a really clear view of just this
(06:15):
target and not any other you know, people in the way.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
To the average person. You know, I feel for the
people who were there present when it happened, but those
of us who would had the misfortune to see the
actual video, the close up video of that bullet striking
him in the neck, you can't unsee that that that
is quite shocking, and it appears that he died instantly.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Yeah, yeah, I unfortunately I have seen the video as well,
and I would I would tend to agree with you
that I think he you know, he was probably dead instantly.
It probably severed as you know, spinal cord or something,
and obviously the amount of blood would indicate that it
likely hit you know, his corotid artery. So if he
(07:04):
didn't die instantly from the bullet, he was going to
die within a matter of a few seconds, just from
the amount of blood that he was going to lose, so,
you know, a very sad situation. And as you said,
people in the crowd observing that and kind of you know,
it's just a ridiculous set of circumstances.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Somebody knew where the stage was going to be, and
where he was going to be sitting, and how to
get into that building and how to get up onto
the roof. I always thought roofs are pretty much locked
unless you're, you know, somebody in maintenance or something like that.
And now we can't find the person.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
That.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
It just feels sinister to me.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Yeah, there's certainly something strange about that, right, I mean,
I think the the idea to be able to predict
where he's going to be is not that difficult if
you're you know, they were setting the stage up. I'm sure,
either that morning or days ahead to being able to pick.
And if you've seen his previous events, it's pretty typical.
His setup is almost exactly the same every place he goes,
(08:09):
a single chair, a table in front of him, a
tent around him. His security guys stay really close instead
of being out front. There's no other basically safety or
security protection. So that piece I think was really easy
to be able to determine the ability to get on
the roof, I think is a whole nother question. It
looks like there obviously was some mobility, whether it was
(08:31):
unlocked or they were able to climb up the outside.
But yeah, I think that's the question that obviously is
trying to be answered today is how are they able
to access this roof and be able to take that shot.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
I hope you're right, Jason Russell, that they find somebody
today and find the actual person that did it, because
if it's a mystery, people will start to speculate former
secret service agents, secure education consultants, Grand Rapids Haul.
