Speaker 1 (00:13):
I remember the snow and the holiday lights.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Wait City Spark, call the night.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Window bright.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Blue. It's Christmas even Avenue. Welcome to downtown Detroit. The
Godfrey Hotel, visit Detroit dot Com brought us here, and
we love to be in the city. It's where I
grew up and the most important and biggest city in Michigan.
Of course, there are radio stations across the state of
Michigan carrying this show. And even if you drive to
(00:52):
Detroit or sometimes you fly through Detroit, we are here
and you'll end up somewhere sometime on Woodward Avenue. And
that's Karen Newman, who sang the national anthem for the
Red Wings for years and years and years and years
and created this Christmas song about Detroit's big salators Christmas. See.
(01:26):
I'll never forget because my sister was the marketing director
for the Detroit Red Wings that before the game one time,
I was down in the bowels of Joe Louis Arena
and I was standing near the Zamboni gate and it
was almost game time and ah my gosh, I think
it was a Cadillac pulled up right outside that door
that led to the underbelly of Joe Louis Arena and
(01:48):
in walked Karen Newman, made a left, went up the
Zamboni gate, up the red carpet, blew on a little
tuning fork, sang the national anthem. I went back down
the carpet, right through the bowels into the car and
gone back to West Bloomfield. So if I know she
(02:08):
had tickets, but she probably gave him away that day.
But that was really impressive to see her just walk
in and do that. It's MPs and this is her
con look word Avenue had a busday with a pleasun bab.
In the meantime, Joe Tate is listening and his toe
(02:30):
is probably tapping. The state representative Democrat from here in Detroit.
He was Speaker of the House, a veteran and played
in the NFL too and played for the Michigan State Spartans,
and he's on our AT and T line. Thank you
for this, welcome to the city and to your district.
We sure appreciate it and it's good to talk to
you again.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Absolutely, thank you, Michael Patrick, and I really appreciate the time.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Well, if you were here in person, could we banged
shoulders like you did before? A game.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Absolutely we could have. It's you know, I know you're
not too far from the old Tiger Stadium and where
the Detroit Lions played too for a while.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Well, you know what I've got to tell you, Joe Tate,
I'm glad I don't live across the street from Nemo's
because I think I'd probably spend more time there than
I would in church, if you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yes, indeed, yeah, And if.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
We banged shoulders, there would be nothing left of me,
because you are a specimen of physical fitness in order
to serve in the military and play football at Michigan
State and in the NFL as well. And so you
don't mind me asking you for a breath from politics
for a second. What do you think of the Spartans
new football coach?
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah, I think Coach Fitzgerald. I think he's really going
to fit in the East Lansing. Everyone around the Midwest
knows him obviously, being a player at Northwestern, a great
football player there and as well as a head coach
at Northwestern and the way he was able to win
at that university, And he's going to bring a lot
(04:08):
of excitement to East Lansing into the state of Michigan.
I'm really excited about and.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
The Lions chances to make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I think I'm not an expert, but I know that
they have to win out and probably get a little
help from a few other teams. I know that they've
been banged up quite a bit but still have been
playing hard. I think the l a Rams, the team
that they played this past Sunday, is probably one of
the better, if not the best football team in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Right now, what about a potential war with Venezuela.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
You know, I'm I'm really, uh, you know, concerned. You know,
I think, you know, with all of this, the powers
that the United States has and being a leader of
glob the leader, there is a lot of responsibility to that.
So I would hope that, you know, at the end
of the day, diplomacy comes out on top. You know,
(05:11):
we never want to go into conflicts, and absolutely that
responsibility of sending Americans off to fight wars. I mean
that's something that everyone who has that decision, you know,
takes it very seriously.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Nobody knows that better than a veteran like yourself. And
we appreciate your service to the country. What is your
relationship like with Layer Duggan.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Good Good, We've had a very good working relationship.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
You know.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
It's funny enough. I'm I was his state representative when
he was well. He's still at the Menuviia mansion, but
I was his state rep But we were able to
get a lot of work done, whether it was you know,
support and resources for the City of Detroit, working around
(06:05):
the community, violence intervention and and other items. He's been
a steady hand on the wheel for the City of Detroit.
And you're probably seeing it right now. You know, his
leadership has led to significant progress in the City of Detroit,
and certainly grateful for all of his leaderships as mayor.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
What about his next step and what's your next step?
Speaker 1 (06:33):
His next steps, I mean, we'll see, we'll see. I mean,
he's going to be a formidable candidate in terms about
in terms of his work. We'll see what happens next
year with the elections. As you know, I mean, these
things can go several different ways before an election day.
But for me, I'm just going to continue to do
(06:55):
the work here in Landing. Again, sorry we missed each
other in the city. I'm going to keep continuing to
work from my constituents in Detroit, and we'll end up
seeing what's next.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Well, thank you very much. Luckily we ran out of timer.
I would have asked you about that hullabaloo about members
of the military disobeying potential orders. You don't want to
wander into that, though, so we'll just tip helmets and
say thank you Joe Tate for the service now to
our state. A veteran and a football player,
