Speaker 1 (00:15):
In the name, shut up and drawn.

Speaker 2 (00:27):

It's Eastern Michigan University, Tony Cuthbert. Isn't it true? Is
it Eastern or Oakland it's Oakland University that has the

(01:32):
uh the video sports program.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Eastern Michigan it's Eastern Yes, yes, Eastern Michigan has it.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
And it's so it's competition like any other sport like
softball or baseball or track whatever, but it's it's video games.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Yeah, and this is becoming huge. It's I think at
this point in the state of Michigan, it's even a
sanctioned sport by the Michigan High School Athletic Association. I mean,
we're just flying into this new age in Eastern Michigan.
Of course at the forefront.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
So I want to know, after what I saw yesterday
at the F one Arcade where you got in the simulator,
if there were automated digital racing, would you qualify for
the team.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I don't think I would qualify to clean up sweep
the floor in the garage. At this point with my performance,
I think I beat you in one of the races.
That's my highlight.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
I guess, yeah, that's because you came in ninth and
I came in tenth. One of the races was at Manza,
the other one Las Vegas. They were Formula one races.
The other one was the Belgian Grand Prix, and Paul
Eisenstein is laughing because it all looks like fun and games,
but driving a high performance vehicle in a race like
that is not easy. Contributing editor Headlight Dot News. He's

(02:47):
driven everything that has wheels on it, and I don't
know if he's driven the flying car yet, but he'll
be one of the first to do it because he's
one of the leading automotive journalists and one of the
first people up in Los Angeles this morning at the
LA Auto Show. Four and a half flowers from here
where we are in Las Vegas. Good morning, and thanks
for being here so early.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, well Europe early too, so it's going to be
with you.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
You can look out the window of whereever your hotel
is and usually you'll see plenty of headlights backed up,
one after another after another. With the traffic in Los Angeles,
you don't get to open a car up too much there.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Do you. Oh, maybe for a mile or two, and
then you're doing two miles an hour again. Yeah, getting
back to my hotel, which is a grand total of
eighteen miles from the conventions of Yes, it took me
what an hour and fifteen minutes Yeah, it's very different
driving out here from Detroit, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Where are you staying?

Speaker 1 (03:41):
I'm actually staying down in Redondo Beach, Torrents area, because
you know, I went to the press preview of the
media day yesterday and today I'm going to have a
chance to meet with some folks over at Honda. They're
celebrating their fiftieth anniversary.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Here in La Redondo Beach is very nice. I salute
you for staying there. It's pretty chill compared to the city.
But at the preview, can you give us a sneak
peek or do we go to Headlight dot news to
learn what you did?

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Well? You should go to Headlight dot news to get
a closer look at everything that I wrote about. But
let's just say it was a little less than overwhelming.
We have seen the de evolution, if you will, of
auto shows over the last five years or so ever
since COVID hit, auto shows have really sort of turned

(04:37):
into just sort of a secondary event, even at the
big places like Detroit and Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
Automakers have decided that they don't necessarily need to go
to the shows anymore to launch new product so there
were only two major previews yesterday at the media preview.

(04:59):
The good news this was those were pretty big, pretty interesting.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
There's pressure, is there not on the Detroit Show this
year moving back to January?

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah? Yeah, Well, you know, they did it last year
and unfortunately they just didn't get much involvement from the
auto industry itself. They're going to have a little bit
more this year. It looks like the Big three or
finally supporting the hometown team, so to speak. But it's
just certainly not what it used to be. I remember

(05:32):
when it was a must attend by every auto company.
At one point, Detroit claimed to have had seventy seventy
different previews, seventy different new models debuting in a three
day period.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Did they have a Detroit January Show last year?

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Where does the time go?

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Yeah? Left?

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yer?

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Last year was Yeah. Last year was the first year
they moved back to January.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Ford and Cadillac are getting back into Formula one racing,
and I remember learning somewhere along the line there was
a sort of a disagreement of philosophy where Ferrari built
cars so they could fund the racing, and Lamborghini funded racing,
so they could sell cars. I think were the two
ways to look at it, Which is it for Cadillac

(06:22):
and Ford? Why would they get back invested in Formula one?

Speaker 1 (06:26):
I think they're involved in Formula one much the same
reason that they're involved in racing in general. They'll tell
you that the reason they want to be involved is
that Number one, it does help build the brand image,
There's no question about that, and that, of course, in
turn helps sell vehicles. But it also has typically been

(06:48):
a place where they can try out new technology. They
supposedly can learn on the track and then transfer technology
into production. This it's always been a debate can you
really translate Formula one technology onto onto the highway? Interestingly enough,
you know Ford is going to show off some sort

(07:10):
of supercar in Detroit as this show in January, so
maybe the claim is legitimate this time.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Paul.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
I know it's your job and you're used to driving everything.
We went to some type of an auto show last
night and they had a nineteen eighty eight Ferrari for sale.
It was a quarter of a million dollars. What's going
if you're if you're driving in something like that, Again,
it's your job. What's going through your head. What are
you looking for in an automobile? I know that's an
older ride, but there's a lot of pressure driving a

(07:40):
quarter of a million dollar vehicle.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
I would say that was a test Rosa.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah, oh my gosh, it's cheap for a test Rosa.
You know, if it's an antique, if it's an old car,
the price is typically you can go up to millions
of dollars. So if you only paid a quarter million,
you did pretty well. You got it. You got it
on the cheap.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Gee, wonder what kind of financing we could get for that.
We'd need financing just for the maintenance on a car
like that, wouldn't we though.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Yeah, it's there. You do have to spend a few books.
The nice thing with some of the exotics have gotten better.
You know. It used to be you knew that if
you bought something like a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, you
were going to put a lot of maintenance into those vehicles.
And interestingly enough, today those brands are expected to be
reliable and not require you to be in the shop

(08:32):
all the time. Too.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Before you do anything automotive, check with Paul Eisenstein. He's
at Headlight Dot News and not only can you have
some fun, you can get some rock solid advice on
your next ride. It's Michael Patrick Shields buyer Keeper's Casino Friday.
I drove my Chevy Blazer up the track, up the strip,

(08:56):
and hours later the Formula One cars were there yesterday.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
