Speaker 1 (00:05):
Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield Michigan and Blue Care Network.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm producer and creative director Tony Cuthbert.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now in the shadow of the Capitol Dome and Lansing.
He's heard from the beaches of Lake Michigan, to the
halls of power and behind closed doors. Here's Michigan's Michael
Patrick Shields.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Michael Patrick Shields is on the air.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
Good morning world, Good morning Michigan. I'm Kyle Malin, editor
of the Murrs newsletter, filling in form Michael Patrick today
Tony Cuthbert on the other side of the glass. We
talk about state government and politics here on this show.
And I'm here anyway. And when Michael Patrick's here, he
says politics is his family business.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Is that right? That's what we say, correct.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
The family business. Even though he's has he run.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
For office people, as he always says, he couldn't ask
anybody for a dollar.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Well, every month, the folks over at Progress Michigan work
with their friends at PPP and come out with some
polling that is usually very relevant to the Times, and
we like to have them come on and talk about
what they found. And our friend Sam Inglot is joining
us now to do exactly that.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Good morning, Good morning, Kyle, Thanks for having me on.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
All right, So every time you guys do these polls,
there's always that one question that I know you're super
excited that you got to ask. What was that question
this time?

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Well, you know, the question that we really looked at
that really jumped out to me, Kyle was the question about,
you know, what should you know state logmakers be focused on?
And you know, our are people likely to support lawmakers
who want to put up restrictions between voters in the

(02:05):
ballot box. Over the last few elections, we've had a
lot of success with people showing up in record numbers
to improve and modernize our election processes. And the question
that we asked was would you be more or less
likely to vote for a state lawmaker who voted to
create more barriers between voters in the ballot box? And
not surprisingly, a majority of voters said, like, heck no.

(02:30):
And I think that's really important for lawmakers to consider
as they're looking at some of the policies that are
moving through the legislature right now.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
You know too.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yesterday the House passed and income tax cut, and today
they're going to be pushing through a transportation funding plan
that includes no new revenue. So that means kind of
just rearranging money within the state budget to try and
find three billion dollars more for the roads. And one
of the questions you all asked was the cuts that

(03:02):
would have to come in order to reprioritize money for
the roads. You have twenty five percent reduction for K
through twelve schools, cutting funding for higher education, and then
ending funding for school meal programs. And that didn't poll
very well, No.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Kyle, it didn't. And you know, you know, we asked
the question, you know, about whether it's the voting rights
or the budget priorities, and it's it's pretty clear that
I think you know a majority of people when asked
and again these questions, we didn't say, hey, Republicans are
doing this, right, We just said, hey, state lawmakers are

(03:41):
doing this. Whether it's you know, attacking voting rights or
cutting K twelve education, taking food away from kids, you know,
cutting off funding to higher education. That's not something that
people are down with. But unfortunately, that's exactly what we're
seeing from good old Maga Matt Hall. Just within the
first few months of Republicans taking over the state House,

(04:03):
it looks like, you know, they're they're taking a lot
of the massive cuts and the you know, setting up
the handouts for billionaires that Trump and must are doing
in Washington, DC, and they say, hey, that looks good.
Let's copy and paste that and push that on Michigan.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
So we had twenty nine percent support the aforementioned cuts
that I just listed, sixty five percent opposed, And then
you asked another question about cutting food assistants, housing assistants, aaron,
water protections, and agriculture, and that came back at what
is this thirty three percent in support? And it looks
like sixty percent a pose. And you know, you could say, well,

(04:44):
they're not. You don't have to cut those things in
order to reprioritize money for the roads. But when you
take a look at the state budget and you look
at where most of the money goes, I mean you're
talking public assistance DHHS, so medicaid and those types of
programs to help the least of the and then you're
looking at education, and then you've got some money that

(05:07):
you send to local governments and universities and school districts.
And then once you get all that done, and then
corrections to house people in prisons. Once you get that done, Sam,
there ain't that much left.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
No, And you know some of us, you know, us
wonky nerds, Kyle, I'm just going to call us what
we are. Right. We get so focused on like process
and numbers and things like that. And you know it's
a little cliche at this point, but people always say,
like a budget is a statement of values, right, but
it's also not just that, like the state budget directly

(05:42):
impacts people's lives. I mean, if you are talking cuts
to public education quite literally, cuts to like taking food
away from kids, cutting healthcare, housing assistance. These are things
that have a direct impact on actual human beings, our friends,
our families, our neighbors, making things more expensive for everyone.

(06:05):
This is the Republican budget. And if we want to
go back to that cliche of like it's showing where
values are, this shows in my mind, they don't give
a darn about, you know, lowering costs for people. They
don't they don't care how these how these cuts are
going to impact people because, like I said, they're really
kind of following the lead here of what Republicans are

(06:27):
doing in Congress, aligned with Donald Trump, they're also looking
to cut Medicaid and health care access to people. So
it's a it's a real problem. And we're only three
months into this thing. As far as divided government in
Michigan and total Trump must control of our federal government,
and things ain't looking too rosie. I'd like to say
a lot of rocks have dropped in the water at

(06:48):
this point. We don't really know how far the ripples
are going to go, but you can be sure a
lot of people are going to get hosed.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Because of it.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
And you could say, well, you just asked a bunch
of Democrats in this poll, but I'm rolling to the
bottom and one of the questions is did you vote
for Trump, Harris or someone else? And forty nine percent
voted for Trump, forty eight percent voted for Harris, and
three percent voted for someone else. So the pollster was told,
you got to reflect what people did in the last election,

(07:18):
and it looks like you did.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
So yeah. I mean, like I said, I think a
lot of people were sold a false Bill of goods
by by Donald Trump and a lot of Republicans here
in Michigan about what they promised to do. You know,
the election was about cost of living in a lot
of ways and economic policy, and now you know that's
they're executing on what they think that looks like. And

(07:40):
when I'm talking about the Republicans here and I think
a lot of people are saying, whoa, whoa, whoa, Wait
a minute, this is not what I signed up for.
Because if you're talking taking food away from kids, cuts
to public education, cuts to transportation, housing, healthcare, those things
will lead to more expenses for people, higher cost of living.
It doesn't actually rest any problems. It just compounds the

(08:02):
problems that we have in this country and makes it
worse for everyday people.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
We're talking with Sam Inglott, the executive director at Progress Michigan.
We only got forty five seconds left. Last thing I
want to touch on is you asked throughout the tariffs
and it looks like we had fifty seven percent concerned
and only thirty nine percent not concerned at all. What'd
you make of that?

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Yeah? No, I mean again, like I said, a lot
remains to be seen on how these things are going
to happen. But you know, we've heard from a lot
of policy experts, we've heard from working people about how
these tariffs are going to impact people, and it's just
more of the same. Where the policy is coming down
from the top. Republicans are unfortunately looking like they're going
to hurt a lot of work in folks.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
All right, Sam Inglott, the executive director of Progress Michigan,
thanks for joining us on Michigan's Big Show this morning.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Yeah, thank you, kyl And hey March maddness, go green
