(00:00):
On today's mind of the apes fourscore and seven Bananas Go. Tim Burton
brought forth upon these podcasters a newmovie, Conceiving out of the Toilet and
dedicated the proposition that all apes arecreated equal. King, Hello, and
(00:55):
welcome to many of the Apes. The Daily podcast where we break down every
minute of the playing of the amovie one minute a time. I'm todd.
That was Richard reading us a littlebit of ape history. M hmmm.
And over to the sides, Seanand I were giggling like children as
JJ and and Richard were talking aboutdifferent workout type things in terms and they
(01:19):
they made us go to childlike typeof satan and jerks. Yeah. The
Olympic weightlifting, right, which isthis national sport and national sport yeah right
yeah, CrossFit app some of thosemovements as well. And the two moments
are called the snatch and the cleanand the clean and jerk overhead. And
it's once you want your first, like couple of weeks across the gig,
at some point it just becomes theterminal. It's the lingo. It doesn't
(01:42):
doesn't even think about it anymore. The problem jerk it over my head.
Well and the problem too was thatyou both kept doing it, and it
was like there would be little momentsalmost like that's what she said, kind
of things that Shan and I werejust like children over here, and you
it was like you gotta quit, you gotta quit. It was so much
fun. Grow up? Why Iwill never do that. I will always
giggle a shit like I grow upand when I look at you, I
want to throw it. Oh mygod, it is the child episode.
(02:07):
This film has gotten us to actinglike children. We are at the last
minute of action in this film.Do we think the mysteries will be solved?
Do we think new things will beintroduced? I don't know, Sean,
tell us what's going on with minuteone thirteen. We're gonna sorry.
Minute one thirteen with Davidson staring disbelief, and ends with second assistant director Mike
(02:29):
Ribbico, All right, here itcomes minute one thirteen of Tim Burton's Planet
of the Apes. As an onethirteen. We have an oberon's worth of
(03:37):
apes and humans, two displaced podsworth of humans and apes. So many
while humans and apes sitting minus twogorillas, and a peace among humans and
apes. Okay, so here wego. Visually we begin again on the
quote behind the statue, Leo lookingon in disbelief as he starts to hear
incoming police sirens. We see cars, cars that look exactly like the cars
(03:59):
that we have. We see motorcycles. Then we finally get the one hundred
face on a reveal of a gorillaas they get out of the car and
draw a weapon. They are dressedin a policeman's uniform. Though it is
very evocative of almost like a villageperson dress up type thing where it's overly
leathered, it is that the costumesare very we'll keep going. Sorry,
(04:20):
yeah, So then we see thereverse. Everyone all the apes begin to
run in. Another motorcycle cop witha helmet comes, They're all pulling guns,
fire and emergency vehicles show up.Leo comes out looking bewildered as just
a sea of fucking apes come in. And then halfway through it, we
finally see some of the tourists inthe area who have apparently come on to
(04:43):
start taking pictures of a human becausewith the kid. Hey, by the
way, for those of you whoare not young, not old enough to
understand what a camera is at thirtythree seconds only is a personal camera.
The little ape comes up and takesa little personal because this is a human
and Leo looking about is everyone rushesin now again security, We're fine,
(05:06):
this has been they've invaded airspace whatnot. But then we have three helicopters come
around and they're sweeping their lights aboutas though they're looking for something, though
we know that we found them. And then we fade to black and we
get our credits, which are weget our unit production manager of Russ Finger,
first assistant director god Catalely Fralander that'sa name, and second assistant director
(05:32):
Matt reben Cough. Okay, solet's go back to Leoh looks about it.
And really the main thing that changeshere is when we turn to the
sound of the sirens and all thepolice vehicles begin to come in. What
hasn't changed that he hasn't closed hismouth, and we did not mention in
the previous minute his acting was Ithink I think the only time he closed
(05:58):
his mouth when he's in the spaceshipand is doing fartfaces. Yeah, completely,
So okay, why why does itbother me so much that the police
cards and the vehicle where the military? But why does it why does everything
look exactly the same, and itbothers me that it does. It has
not changed anything about this, Butthen again, Theyd's statue is exactly the
(06:23):
same. I don't know why itbothers me, but it bugs the ship
out of it. I don't havea problem with not the military responding first,
because the police would be probably thefirst because they're because they're local,
and they would already be in,you know, out doing a patrol or
whatever, so you're going to getthere instead of scrambling, because this is
taking them less than sixty seconds toshow up after he's crashed and before going
(06:46):
by real time. Now, whoknows how they've compressed the time how long
he was staring there, you know, ape agape, staring at But the
fact that it goes from him crashingwhere it is silent and no and he's
round there to tourists or showing up, and that's a huge problem. That
was weird, Yeah, super weird. Why why didn't we see people getting
(07:06):
out of the way whenever it hitsYeah, scampering away? Yeah, you
just see silhouetted figure, You seethem from behind. Maybe you make it
rainy so they have umbrellas out andyou can't see them, and they have
somebody's Suddenly police are putting up acaution line and people trying to flock from
the porn from the sides. Fromthat a caution line at least me give
me a sense that there's a reasonfor people kind of gather and stand behind.
(07:29):
I don't know, but as muchas I do not like descending,
this is a movie I ultimately wantedto see where it was Apes on Earth?
I agree as humans, but weirdthe isn't that the weird thing that
they're actually touching on peer Bull's originalidea very end here. Yeah, they
finally get to it where it's like, hey, we're in a modern,
(07:51):
modern society with them taking on exactlythe affectations and whatnot that we have.
That's a cool idea. Yeah,I wish we had seen that movie across
the board. Yes, this isa movie I would have rather seen.
But they've set this up so poorly. I don't know how they would have
executed it in the next movie ofjustifying it, okay, i'd and then
(08:11):
so where I got into that,it felt like the village people dressing up,
you know, when he has it. I think what it ultimately is
is it's really weird to see apolice hat on a gorilla. I'm looking
at that photo possibly what it is, but I mean, everybody's everybody.
They were going really only way tohave everybody in their uniforms. And it's
also like the most non distressed lookinguniform. It's it's very new. It's
off the rack. Yeah, andit's it's just too clean. It doesn't
(08:33):
look real. Look, they alllook very cost to me. Yeah,
they don't look like a Theo Warren. They don't look use. They look
like they look like rental cops.Like I just got this at the costume
store. I'm not even sure ifit's these are the outfits of that era.
I'd be fascinating to go back,or we'll look another you know,
police movies from two thousand, justsee if the outfitting is it's the same.
Yeah, I mean, like eventheir hats are very leathery. That's
(08:54):
what I was. That feels likeit feels like some BSDM. I want
to I want to propose something toboth of you because we've both said this,
We've all said that this should havebeen the film. Imagine that when
Leo goes chasing Pericles and he crashes. If this was the first of the
film, Yeah, if this iswhere If this is the first and he
goes when we see thede on theLincoln, We're like, what the fuck?
(09:16):
That's an interesting idea. Start hereand tell me that story and tell
me how society maybe hasn't changed andthey still have the problems that we have
something and that could be what you'retalking about. But Tim Burton loves um
other worldly sets and locations and thingslike that. This would not evoke that
for him. He would know hewould really want to go to know the
(09:37):
planet fantasy. Yeah, he'd wanthe'd want to go to the Batca.
I want something crazy like that.Yeah, so I would like to see
this movie. That's not what timbo, No, but I would. I
could say he could then have stretchedit out because you say that they've always
maybe been the stewards of Earth andthe humans have been the lower species.
So you have a Washington, DC, but you have it where it's a
(10:00):
little bit more ape where you seepeople they're like facility to climb on top
of the bill outside the buildings andstuff like that. You have a more
vertical thing where people aren't just usingelevators or stairs to get around. They're
using ropes and stuff, so youmake it a little ape, but you
also haven't modern Yeah, you,so you show how it's still us.
But they've accommodated it for themselves alittle bit because everybody's walking around barefoot,
(10:22):
so they always make sure the streetsare always clean, so nobody's cutting themselves
stuff like that. So the isthat supposed to be a kid with the
cameras out and that's his mom behindhim, just awkwardly. Yeah, well,
it's funny. You get to thatsame point thirty two seconds. She's
wearing like a longer, kind ofbroken puffy overcoat and she has like almost
(10:46):
what looks like my mother in law'shaircut. Yeah, that looks like an
old woman in plus, they gaveher a little bit of a goatee type
look. It almost looks like shehas a beard. I can't tell why
her snout so white, because well, but aries wasn't that way well,
because they gave her a little bitsideburns and they were trying to keep her
very feminine. Maybe it's woman's inthe background, But as she approaches,
(11:07):
she's got her hands like like almostlike she looks really unusual, and the
hair stands out that all the coatsand jackets stand out like, I guess
it's cold there. Like I wouldnot have gone with that kind of take.
You've already got these really costumes policeofficers, right, I'm gonna put
them in something that's a little morenatural and not necessarily wearing jackets at nighttime
because it's cold or rainy, likeI needed something weird. And he's got
(11:28):
the dad has a suit on witha newspaper in his hand. It looks
very contrived. Well, hey,at least they're saying that we can have
cross species marriages too, because shelooks very chimp like and the dad looks
very gorilla like. I didn't.I didn't think the kid's makeup was all
that great. I thought it wasa little I thought it was they for
all the fantastic work they did withAtar and Thade early on. The kid's
(11:54):
mask looks like it looks like amask. Well, it's also you can
see his interior lips very well.Yeah, they didn't paint it. It's
very inked. Yeah, maybe maybethey didn't mean to do a tide on
the kid. They didn't, Yeah, they didn't do enough lipstick. No,
basically, and I'm also going tolook I hate having to go here,
but it almost comes off like blackface to me. You know,
it's like a little bit. Itjust look it's bad. They should have
(12:16):
looked at that and thought, oh, there's is a little bit too.
They've they've overly dressed these characters toconceal potentially bad makeup. I don't know,
costing your jobs. The thing thatI was probably disappointed because as they
begin to swoop in the kid's sake, your camera, our closing shot is
just him standing. I thought thattoo. I thought your closing shot should
(12:39):
be Leo or something like that, where he is feeling like the world closing
in on him, and instead weget to say he's supposed to say no,
no, no, right, that'sin the script. There's no no.
He should have said that instead. It's just like those those those very
long moments we would have with thecharacters earlier, where there should have dialogue
and they just stand there and saynothing. Right. I mean, because
Dana had that instantly, where it'sjust like, okay, give her some
(13:01):
some lines right here. Leo frequentlyneeded lines. Same thing. At least
let him get his no, no, no, not just like if they
had had like little voiceovers, becauseyou hear they're like put your hands up,
if you had heard like we gota wild human or oh yeah,
it's like just like little things totell you that this is not that he's
crashed. He's a good thing, but that human is a bad thing,
(13:22):
or calling him an alien. Maybethat's why they're all looking like who the
fuck and what the fuck is that? Maybe maybe the humans, you know,
I needed just getting to the shotfrom behind with him being surrounded his
hands starting to go up is justweak, anti climatic weak. I needed
him to say no, no,no. I needed one of them to
come up and handcuffed him. Ineed to see him get pushed in the
(13:43):
car and say what is going on? Something more or as it fades black,
if you start hearing gunfire or somethinglike that, just something Please kill
Leo please, That's kind of whatI was hoping about. But but something
just it's really the the you're concludingmoment is just the world is weird.
I don't find myself this is construedto be a sequel tease. I don't
(14:07):
find myself wanting to see this film. There's nothing about it that makes me
go, oh my god, ishe going to get free? Oh my
god, what's going on? Iknow what's going on. This is a
cash grab. This is tacked onso that you're hoping that I will come
back. And it's pretty obvious. And we'll talk about this. I have
some notes on him, but audiencesdidn't want to see his equal. They
didn't care enough. Well, there'smultiple reasons why they didn't care enough.
(14:31):
Right, it's the fact that he'san unmotivated, unmotivating lead. Right.
They didn't give him any dialogue,They didn't go into anything interesting politically to
kind of hook you. Sure, they didn't commit to anything in general.
That ending makes no sense whatsoever,or they'd leave without any tension. He's
just there. Yeah, there's nostakes that he's left there. They dropped
(14:52):
all the characters off, I mean, at least an alien. They took
Newt with them, right, theyeven if they did kill her, at
some point, all the characters havebeen left behind. Pericles has left behind
Marky. Mark can evoke that feelingof street tough guy. Um. I
could have bought him as a pilot, that is street tough, that had
all these things and maybe throughout ifthey had done a little bit more with
(15:15):
him where it was like he's unchangeable, he's just always cocky and sure and
maybe at this point he finally isknocked down a peg and he dropped him
to his knees, like no,no, something that would Yeah, you've
changed him just that much, havinghim having him fall to his knees,
and of itself would at least beinterestingly gave up. Then, Yeah,
(15:35):
exactly. I I sigh because it'slike, did these people not sit down
in a writer's room and talk thislong? You know the writer strike,
remember, I know, And maybethat's it. Maybe they just didn't get
people together and talk through these finalthings, like wouldn't it be better if
we did X y Z. Imean, the lord of this ending is
(15:56):
something that they were at the barthe night before, and Rute on a
napkin does feel that way. Yeah, he gets waited this shot. Okay,
let's get the shot. May weall fixing the editing? Yeah?
Well that brings us to the credits, and so we've got what seven minutes
of credits? Okay, and we'llmay I propose something real quickly with the
credits, just because it's not themost thrilling thing. You're just listening to
(16:18):
music. I'm gonna kind of narrateover those as we see people's names and
whatnot, and we can do thatjust so it keeps going. That's okay.
