W Polsce żyje ponad 35 tysięcy gatunków zwierząt, m.in. 3200 gatunków ślimaków lądowych, 15 gatunków gadów, 18 - płazów, ok. 450 gatunków ptaków i 115 gatunków ssaków. Ponad 60% z nich, czyli 21 tysięcy gatunków, mieszka w lasach.
Ale gdzie? Skoro, kiedy spacerujemy po lesie, nawet bardzo cicho, możemy nie zauważyć ani jednego zwierzaka? Gdzie one siedzą? Gdzie śpią i gdzie wychowują młode?
A przecież w królestwie zwierząt można znaleźć architektów, budowniczych, rzemieślników, dekoratorów wnętrz, inżynierów. Zwierzęta też kopią, murują, sklejają, zszywają, splatają, konstruują i ulepszają, Miewają całe pałace, w których są oddzielne pomieszczenia do spożywania posiłków, odpoczynku, zabawy czy załatwiania potrzeb fizjologicznych. Sprzątają i dbają o porządek.
