Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, I'm Carla Campbell's for the entrepreneur Mom's podcast. I'm
here with my good friend Amy Bowen, She's a mompreneur
and Amy. How long do we know each other?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Oh? My goodness, probably like I want to say, like
six years ago.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Yeah, we met a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yeah, and we're in Miami.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah. At the was it at the Indie Wise?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
It was? It was the Indie film It's.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
The film festival. So can you tell the audience a
little bit about yourself and what you do?
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Absolutely? So. I do it a lot. There's a lot
of different things going.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
I wear a lot of hats, like a lot of
different moms, So it is a juggling act. I'm a
medical license esthetician as well as an on air TV
beauty expert as well as I do work at a
private medical spa practice, and I do have patients that
I do see on a weekly basis to help them
(00:57):
attain their skincare goals. And it could be anything from
acne to anti aging. And so going back into the
television realm, I got back into it by endorsing products
probably about seven years ago, and I was doing testimonials
and things like that down in St.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Pete, Florida, and then from.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
There it went onto on air television on the Home
Shopping Network HSN, and some different vendors were so gracious
to allow me to represent them on air and do
what I love, which is talk about products that can
help people change their lives.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
So that's kind of everything in a nutshell.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
And we were talking about how, you know, everything has
changed since COVID hit, how has that affected all your
businesses and being a mom in general.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
So affecting businesses. It was a total adjustment. I did
hear something that I really loved was a couple of
weeks ago and someone said, the sooner you accept your
new circumstances, the sooner you can move on and make
the changes you need to make. And that's been really true,
you know, instead of just being like, oh my goodness,
there's so many changes in my life and what am
(02:05):
I going to do now, you know, and just dwelling
on that, just being basically like, okay, what can we
do now? In this term because this is a term
for everybody, This was like a worldwide term for everyone
in the way that they handle business. So with my
TV on air, they pretty much had to shut down
the studios for on air guesting and co hosting because
(02:27):
we couldn't go into the studio, so we went into
skype sessions and so now we're able to talk live
with the producers.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
And the live audience can still hear us, and.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
We skype from different locations and those sets are approved
and we're able to do on air beauty that way.
So that's been fantastic. That's worked out really well, and
we've had to learn how to use Skype and zoom
and all these different modalities that we might not have
been because we had a cameraman and a makeup artist.
So those things went by by and we had to
just be grateful for what we have, which is still
(02:56):
able to engage with people, you know, and that's what
we love to do so as you know, Carlo, because
you used to be in the television, so we love
engaging with people. So it was kind of a little
different change because we weren't in the studio with people,
but yet we still had contact with them. So that
was fantastic. So that was adjusted. It was a juggle
as far as my daughter lived in town and we
(03:17):
were yeah, even weekly basis, you know, daily weekly basis
changes up with our schedules.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
However, she ended up moving because can.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
You start over about your daughter because it froze, but
he'll edit it out to just kind of start about
your daughter moving.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Sure, So, oh, my daughter and I are very close,
and so she ended up. She is also in the
beauty world, in beauty industry. She was working for Alta.
She got furloughed, so she decided to go visit the
mountains and decided she loved it there. So that was
like a huge adjustment for mom because I was used
to having her here in the state of Florida next
(03:55):
to me and being able to see her whenever.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
So we had to make that adjustment.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
So that's been challenging back and forth be able to
see our families, and of course with COVID then it's
really tricky to be able to see your family right now.
So sometimes we couldn't see each other like we had
So that was mentally, emotionally an adjustment to make. And
then you know, fitting in when you're going to visit
with your family and when you're going to do your
work schedule, because of course, as you know, Carla, when
(04:19):
you wear many hats and you are an entrepreneur. Mom,
You've got these things now, you just kind of have
to step up your game as far as keeping your schedule,
which isn't always easy. It wasn't easy even before COVID,
so really making a media plan, which Carla is great
at doing because she is the social media guru. So
what I was doing is making a month ahead of
time all of my marketing that I was doing to
(04:41):
make it easy for me to keep me on track
because I didn't have anybody kind of pushing me in
the back end. And the biggest thing for business that
kept business afloat at the medical spa where I work
with the patients is continuing to be engaged with them
through social media for answering their phone calls and educating,
not trying to sell, because nobody, you know, wants to
be sold. Nobody wants a hard zam, especially not something
(05:02):
they need. So really, when people ask you questions, just
giving them your expertise and lending any hand you can,
you know, at no charge, because you know everybody, Hey,
it's a give and take right now, you know, they
help me, I help them, and then it all works
out and we can all work together. So I've noticed
that Education is key because if people are educated, then
you know they come to you for that expertise that
(05:23):
you're offering.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Then when things come up and running, they know.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Who to go to, you know, Like just like people
come to Carla to help them with marketing and social
media because they know she's the go to on that.
So engaging, whether it's Zoom meetings or we did telehealth
consults with our patients no charge, complementary so we can
educate them on how to take care of their skin,
what products wellness and nutrition they can do at home,
and keep their stress levels down. So all of that,
(05:48):
I think together has really helped keep business afloat in
every ass aspect. All the adjustments that you can make
that are little but really make a difference.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
And I've seen you on social media post videos of
you performing different skincare routines and therapies and the different
things you do on patients. How did that change from
before COVID and as COVID progressed? So now I think
things are opening up a little bit more and people
are less afraid to come in. How did that work
(06:19):
for you? People coming in and you working face to
face with them.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yes, that's a great question. So we had to really transition.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
We were used to having a full clinic and so
we would have we had we do injectibles, we do
iv hydration with vitamins. So what we did is just
start seeing one patient at a time.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
At first. Of course, we use masks.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
We also have face shields, and then I have an
air purifying unit that I actually wear. It's an ionization
unit and it's a personal I actually wear around my
neck to help protect a bringer six feet So just
really making sure that we were protected and we were
protecting our patients and only seeing one at a time
in our facility.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
So we slowed it down.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Which really helped us to get to know our client
base and we took the time with and you know,
and to be present with just one patient at a
time or one client at a time. So it might
have been a little more time consuming, but it paid
off in the end. As far as when we weren't
in the office, I would send out regiments, health regiments,
skincare regiments, things that people could do on their own
(07:19):
at home to take care of themselves since we weren't
able to take care of them in facility.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
So did it feel like going through the pandemic allowed
you to become closer or build better relationships with patients
and clients. What do you think was like the not
I'm not saying the best thing we got out of
the pandemic, but some positives that you think happened in
business because of the pandemic.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Yes, absolutely, I think the number one positive was to
slow me down because I am just like I was
on the go twenty four to seven and this when
code happened, I need to say it.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
It really helped.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Me to take it down a notch and look at
how my crack this was what I could do to
better it, the processes that I could make better as
far as doing a consultation, because you really got to
engage one on one with your clients and your patients,
so how to improve that process and really just to
slow it down.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
And appreciate every little thing.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
That was the biggest thing I learned from COVID is
that you know what, you don't need to be going
twenty four to seven. You don't need to have projects,
you know, line back to back, you know, just focus
on the ones that you have and do the best
at does and improve.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
And it gave a lot of opportunity for improvement.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
And I think that's important as a morepreneur because I
think before COVID on my end as well, you know,
I felt a little bit overwhelmed by everything, and like
you said, it gave us the opportunity to slow down.
And it's important in you know, the mom live entrepreneur
mom life to kind of slow down. What is some
of your advice for women who are experiencing burnout, stress
(08:55):
fatigue from COVID.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Like I said in the beginning, these juggling acts as
as a business owner and you know, trying to set
a good example to and be a good mentor for
your children and for other people around you and keep
that positive vibe going. So I think the best thing
that I found was, like I said, slowing down and
really you know, finding finding new ways and new things.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
It actually was good because it kind of gave it
was like a little challenge.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
So finding something you can do as a challenge, if
it's cooking and cooking better, because we had weeks sometimes
when we were slower and I could actually like really
get into cooking, which I had never done before, you know,
and like really put my whole heart and soul into it.
So my meals were getting better, you know, and I
was like, wow, this is great. I didn't know I could,
you know, cook this way, you know. So it wasn't
just all about business, you know, although you know, business
(09:45):
we have to keep a float. We all need to
make money to support our families.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
At the end of the day. However, I felt like
by slowing it down.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
And exploring other options or other avenues of your business,
maybe that you thought weren't possible, like online consultations or
zoom consultations for your BA business. If you explore different options,
then it actually helps your business grow because hey, if
technology shuts down, you know, if face to face may
not be possible, over the phone console might be good.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
You know, you use a telephone. So finding something.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
That can grow your business in a different way might
be challenging at first, but really beneficial in the end.
So I found that to be very helpful because it
made me take a hard look at how I was
doing my practices and different ways that I could do it,
and it opened a lot of doors new doors.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Did you feel any stress or fear or anything like
that when COVID started, you know, surrounding your family did
you feel like if I go to work, maybe I
might you know, catch something or did you feel safe?
How did you handle that? Those feelings that were that
go through every mom's head during COVID.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Right, absolutely, to add on to matters. My daughter has
a baby too, so adding that whole thing in that picture,
because you don't want to get them sick, especially when
you are. When we came back into work, we were
very slowly seeing patients and clients, but when we're doing
facial procedures, we are face to face, we are on
top of the patient basically, and so bringing that home
(11:10):
to your family, the possibility of doing that, yes, so
of course, you know, upping your game as far as sanitizing.
I really tried not to let it go as so
far to affect me, worrying about it constantly. You know,
I had to tell myself, you know, at some point
you have to shut this off, right, because there's risks
in everything you do.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
There's risks in business, there's risks.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
When there wasn't COVID, So trying not to uber focus
on COVID. You know, although I upped, you know, you
up your game as far as you know, we all know.
Wearing gloves, when we when we come out of the room,
in the room, everything. So I really tried to focus on, hey,
you know, slowing again, slowing down so that I could
allow the time to you know, do better practices, better
(11:51):
healthcare practices, to make sure my family didn't get it.
But of course also stressing financially because you're like, oh,
my goodness, you know, here I go from seeing you know,
ten a day, we're down to two now because we
had to take the time or people weren't comfortable coming in.
And so, yes, there was definitely stresses. And really what
I learned is just let each day have its own anxiety.
(12:13):
Take one day at a time, say you know what, today,
I've got this and this is my agenda. I'll probably
get half of that done, maybe less than that, but
that's okay because it's going to be there tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
And now since things are changing again, people are getting vaccinated,
people feel a little bit more secure. I mean even
people who are not getting vaccinated. Do you see that
your client base is increasing again back to normal or
you're still seeing the same like less clients. So how
does that look?
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Well, it actually has been fantastic because in the state
of Florida. We're very fortunate that we have such fabulous
weather most of the year, you know, so most of
the time in Florida.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
I mean it's about to get really hot here.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
That is to our advantage because people are coming down
here and they're working remote. So we have had add
an influx of out of state clients and patient base
because they know that they can do so much more
outdoor activities or they can be socializing more at a
respected distance here in Florida, and so that's actually increased
our business and we've been working that to our advantage
(13:16):
and making sure that we're reaching a base outside of
Florida as far as our marketing goes, so that we
can draw in those people that are moving new into
the state. So our business has been great and it
is steadily increasing each and every week. So we're very
excited and very grateful for that.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Are you accepting on new patients at this time or
are you pretty much already your client base as far
as the skin and beauty treatments goes.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yes, so we are definitely accepting new skincare patients and
treatment patients. And like I said, we have had a
lot of people that come in just for wellness for
the ibvitamin hydration, and then they realize everything else we
do here. We do injectibles, we do micro needling, we
do medical derma planing, we do do regular relaxation facials
to keep people stressed down.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
And we believe it's from the inside out. So that's
why we have that.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Option of the B twelve injections and the ivs and
everything because we really feel like if you are going
to feel good, that you kind of starts from the beginning,
right and so we also have a nutritional consult in
hair as well.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
So we definitely are accepting new patients. We love new
nice patients.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
We talked about this before in our previous conversations where
we talked about if you feel beautiful, then you act
like a better person. You feel like a better person.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Absolutely, What are your what is.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Your advice pertaining to feeling good looking good during COVID.
I know some people were like, oh, we're wearing masks.
We don't have to put on makeup now, we don't
have to worry about our hair because we're all covered up.
But what are your advice right now about looking good
and feeling better? And maybe you know, just positive, feeling
positive during now that COVID is kind of fading away,
(14:54):
but it's still there, but give us that advice.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Yes, definitely still taking the time to do your makeup
and put on your sunscreen and do your hair, because
sometimes we kind of get into that, you know, especially
if we're working remote in a couple of days. You know,
we get to work remote and do our social media stuff,
so it's like we won't dress up. But then it's
like you're not feeling it, you know, so you have
to be able to feel yourself.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
You don't feel good.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
So I feel like definitely keeping your nutrition on game
because a lot of us kind of fell off that
wagon last year with the nutrition, and that's really where
you get you know, if we're adding extra sugars and
you can't pronounce what you're eating and it's in a box,
you know, things like that are going to slow you
down and then your skin is going to suffer, your
emotions are going to suffer. So really looking at what
(15:39):
you are putting in your mouth and also making sure
you're active if it's a walk around the lake, even
if you feel like you need to wear a mask
or you have a mass knee you know, which is
acting under your mask. Just making sure you are still
taking care of yourself so that you can reflect that
inner beauty.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
That's great advice. And so we're coming to a close here.
Where can people find you? Where are you located? Tell
us all about where to find you, Amy, and physically
in person.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
And online absolutely.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
So with my Instagram it is Amy Bowen Beauty and
that's my handle for that.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
The same thing on Facebook.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
You can reach out me out to me direct message
through Facebook Messenger or Instagram direct message me. And I
also have a website and then I'm located here where
we see patients. It's my physic it's a physician assistant myself.
We have another medical institution. We also have an anesthesiologist
here that is our wellness consultant and a gastro doctor.
So we are located in Port Orange, Florida. So we
(16:36):
are on the East coast by Daytona Beach, Florida, in
between Daytona and New Sumerna Beach. So we do actively
see patients here Monday through Friday.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
So people could take a vacation down to Daytona Beach,
see you get some.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
And plaza resort, stay at the plazas or hotel you know,
one or two night and enjoy aullim amenities there and
then come see us and have your facial wellness treatments.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Absolutely love it.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
So it's been great talking to you Amy as always.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Thank you, Carla, Thank you so much for having me.
I really appreciate your thinking of me too.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
This has been so much fun. I'm Carla Campbells with
The Entrepreneur Mom's podcast. Talk to you guys soon. Bye.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Thank you,
