Speaker 1 (00:00):
Today we talk about Anansi, the spider, the trickster of
West Africa. It's one of the most beloved and enduring
figures in West African folklore, particularly among the Ashanti people
of Ghana. Known as a trickster in the youngyin psychology world,
or a storyteller, Ananzi is not just a character, but
a symbol of wits survival and the power of words.
A Nasi is typically portrayed as a spider, sometimes fully

in animal form and other times as a half human
half spider. He is clever, cunning, and mischievous, using his
intelligence and charm to outwit larger, stronger, more powerful human
beings and many tales the Anazi tricks gods, animals, and
humans alike, but his cleverness is not always selfish. His
actions often bring important lessons or changes to the world,
including the creation of the moon or the invention of

storytelling itself. One of the most famous stories tells how
a Nazi acquired the world's stories from the sky god
Nami at a time when no stories existed. Anansi wished
to possess them and share them with humanity. Iami agreed,
but only if Anansi could capture these three gangerous creatures,

the gift of stories, which he then distributed to the world.
This tale explains why storytelling is often associated with spiders
and why a Nazi is seen as the father of folklore.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
