(00:03):
Welcome to the NERD party. It'sgoing Yes, marry me. I love
you and I like you. Ilove you and I like you. I
love that woman. I love amore than sharks love bloody. Hello.
(00:32):
I'm tristener Adel and I'm the girl. And this is Nerd Nuptial, Episode
one hundred and twenty six. Ifthis is your first time listening, we
are a married couple who looks atlife through a nerdy lens. How are
you doing today? I'm good.We actually had a really fun morning.
We did have a really fun morning. Yeah. We we took the kiddo
out to a trampoline park. Wedid, and I think we actually have
(00:53):
an equally good time a trampoline park, if not maybe a little more sometimes.
Yeah, sometimes I want if wego for us. The first time
we went, I was losing itat how much fun I was having,
Like I was grinning ear to earand I had that excited kid look on
my face and I was laughing hystericallylike a toddler. I was like,
(01:18):
but yeah, she had a greattime, and actually, like I started
texting all of my friends, I'mlike, are you aware of how fun
this is? And then comes thenext morning, yeah, yeah, we
had. It's true. Yeah,I don't have to think about that in
the moment. The moment, justhave fun. But the next morning is
usually a little rough on the body. But this weekend has been kind of
(01:38):
jam packed with a lot of fun, but also a lot of media as
well, which is fun, well, I mean which is fun. I
mean like you know, like funwhere you go outside and you know,
like and everything like that. Butno, like the media that specifically on
Netflix this weekend, a lot ofgreat stuff has been released, and a
lot of stuff greed towards us.Yes, yes, definitely specifically Fincher.
(02:02):
Yes, a Fincher produced anthology seriesof I think eighteen short films all animated,
right, except for maybe one,and it was all it is called
Love, Death and Robots, rightright. And then also the latest half
(02:23):
of season five arrested development, rightright, and Triple Frontier came out as
well, yet starring Ben Affleck andOscar Isaac and a few other people.
Yeah, so a lot of thingsthat felt like it was geared towards nerd
nuptial, right, it really was. Yeah, yeah, it was just
like man like if this was seasonfour's House of Cards on the same weekend,
and my mind would have exploded.Well, we would just not have
(02:43):
had time for all of that excitement. But yeah, we were able to
watch because it's only like ten fifteento twenty minutes of I guess I think
the longest when it was eighteen minutesfor Love, Death and Robots. We
were able to bang that out intwo nights, but we could have on
it in one night if we didn'thave a toddler, If we didn't have
a toddler, right exactly, who'sgoing through a sleep aggression right now to
(03:07):
on latch our door? Oh mygosh, has a parent like the toddler
childlocks, childlocks, she understands nowhow to get past them. So not
only do we have a kid whois advanced in the area of how she
sleeps, because most kids her ageare still in a crib, right,
she maxed out of her crib atlike seventeen months, yeah, and so
(03:30):
she's in a toddler bed, soshe has since seventeen months. Yeah,
she has free rein in her inher bedroom and so we're just like,
okay, well we got to puta childlock on there so she doesn't get
out while we're sleeping. And getshe has trouble, so she would just
probably like wander the house, turnon the TV and watch something. She
knows how to turn on the tv. He does, and so yeah,
(03:51):
we had a childlock on it andshe nope, learn how to do that.
So now it's absolutely nerve wracking.Been fun. It's been great.
So our time for the new mediawas a little strained, but we got
it done. We made it work. We did we made it work.
That's the most important thing. It'sso true because if a wiseman one said,
if something is important to you,you make the time. That's right,
(04:12):
and that's what we did. Andalso I just want to say you
guys, the listeners have been sofantastic. And last week we talked about
Captain Marvel. We did a reviewon Captain Marvel. We got more positive
fan mail about Captain Marvel in thatepisode than any other episode. At one
time, I was so it wasso kind, Like seriously, I was,
(04:34):
I mean to be honest, Iwas a little nervous. Like after
we were done recording, I waslike, oh, I was really honest
and I was really emotional and Iwas just like, oh, Tristan,
is that okay? Like it justfeels zery. Yeah, it's very very
me right, it's just very like, Okay, I'm putting myself out there.
And it just was really nice toknow that you guys appreciate that,
(05:00):
and um, I really appreciate thepositive feedback. That was really kind.
We got tons and tons of positivefeedback from people, men and women.
Yeah, and um, we gotone really nice note like well, I
mean, we got tons of nicenotes, but there was there was one
email specifically that stuck out, andit was just talking she was she was
talking about how she's a person ofcolor and about how, um, she's
(05:23):
a woman of color. Yeah, and how um, she didn't have it
any kind of representation like this whenshe was growing up and she's and she
said, just like the girl,I'm super excited that kids today, Yeah,
we'll have that, and um,it's just it's fantastic the kind of
message that that came across through themovie. And then a lot of people
connected with with how you reacted, like so many people chimed in and said,
(05:46):
this is one of the best episodesyou've ever done, and how representation
matters and everything like that. Soyeah, so girl, you threw yourself
out there and and it connected withthe audience. Yeah, yeah, it
was. It was very kind. But it was really nice that you guys
reached out to us, because that'swhat exactly what we want. We want
to hear from you guys and toknow that, hey, what we're just
talk we're not just talking to ourselvesand we're not just speaking into the void.
(06:09):
Yeah, and so if you guyswant to talk to us more,
if you have any show ideas,or if you have any questions for us,
you know, like what we haven'tdone and a little bit is an
Ama and Naska ask me anything. So if you guys, maybe we'll do
that for the next couple of weeks, like like like throw like a nut,
not shows for the next couple ofweeks, but we'll we'll remind people
for the next couple of weeks ifyou have any questions for us about our
(06:31):
relationship or about our perspective or we'veeven done relationship advice before, which always
makes you always makes you laugh. But yeah, if you guys have anything
like that, please go to thenerdparty dot com slash contact select a nerd
nuptial from the dropdown menu. It'llsend us an email Also you can find
us online. You can find onTwitter. We're at join nerd Party on
(06:54):
Facebook and Instagram. It's just thenerd Party and I'm also personally on Twitter
at the Insane Robin. Yeah,so how about let's let's get into it.
Let's talk about love, Death andRobots first. Okay, Yeah,
so if you haven't watched this,we're not I don't think we're not going
to spoil anything to say like they'reall short. It's not like this is
a thing that's like, you know, these secrets in them or anything like
(07:16):
that. It's more, Um,if you watch the trailer, you probably
should watch the trailer before you actuallywatch this show, because it definitely sets
the tone of what it's all about, this love, death and Robots,
Like for the longest time while seeingthe trailer, because like it's high action,
high violence, a lot of sexuality, and like fast cutting, crazy
(07:41):
music. It's just like a sensoryoverload. Like when you watch, you're
just like what just happened to me? I think that that definitely represents this
whole anthology. They knew what theywere doing, They absolutely knew what they
were doing, and um, itis definitely not for the faint of heart,
the sensitive or the people the maturerating, like people get the vapors
very easily, Like it's it's rough. And for the longest time when I
(08:05):
saw that, I was just like, oh, this might just be for
me. I don't know if thegirl would like this, you know,
like, but I love Fincher somuch, so I felt like I wanted
to at least see what it wasall about. And the idea of it
being so short, um, itwas really appealing. I mean, maybe
it's just a sign of the timesand our type of culture where we're like
(08:26):
shorter is better sometimes, but sometimesI just really like those, like Okay,
these little tiny stories and you canjust be like, okay, I'm
watch like three of these awesome andthen move on with my night. Like
it's nice to have a show likethat. Absolutely. Yeah. Also it
was created by Tim Miller, whodirected the first Deadpool. Yes, it
(08:48):
was so it was it was prettyhim. Yeah. Um, I don't
even know where to start with this, honestly. So there's so many different
ones. So there's eighteen different stories, eighteen different stories of bearing Like some
one was like six minutes long, right, one was eighteen minutes long.
So I think they're between six andeighteen right minutes, right, and uh,
(09:09):
different animation, a lot of animation, different animation styles like that was
something that That's what really intrigued meis that some was really good CGI.
Some was looked like a comic bookCBI, and some was anime. Yeah,
we got some anime in there. We got some stuff that kind of
looked like the Avatar of the LastLast Airbender animation style. Um, like
(09:33):
maybe a CGI archer kind of style, right, and um we got one
live action that was mixed in withsome CGI. Right, but it was
it was all over the place, and it kind of reminded me of it,
okay, or what do you thinkI'm going? That's not at all
what I was going to say.No, I don't know. It reminded
me of Waking Life a lot, like, um, the different styles of
(09:54):
animation for sure, because it feltthat way, and it felt like if
you just kept like it laying itfelt that way. Obviously, Waking Life
has a common thread whereas this one, I mean, this one kind of
has a common thread of love, death and robots, Like I'm gonna get
one of those. But it justit kind of reminded me of Waking Life
kind of like the whole time,I was like, I want to go
back to that. We haven't watchedthat in a long time, A long
(10:16):
time. Yeah. No, uh, mine was actually going to be even
better and more apt than yours.Yeah. No, there was When Matrix
Reloaded came out, there was athing called the Animatrix. Do you remember
that? I do? And itwas it was a collection of short stories.
I can't remember how many, noteighteen, it was something like six.
(10:39):
Yeah, And it was all differentanimation styles done by different directors and
writers, but it was all thecommon thread was the Matrix. It was
all Matrix stories, right, Andsome was like full blown CGI like a
video game, others was anime, others was just different types of two D
animation, and it was very muchthe same kind of concept. And like
some of them were really rough too, Okay, Okay, really rough.
(11:03):
Well let's talk about that. Howrough they were? I mean, okay,
so I mean they were very violent, you know, I mean very
violence there. Yeah, there was. There was. The one that got
to me the most was there waslike a two were wolves who were fighting
each other. Oh you have athing about bones? Oh, anything to
do with bones anything. Like it'sso funny because you can watch pretty much
(11:26):
anything, but if it like messesbones, you were just you're out.
If I see bone, I'm like, nope, nope. Like if I
see a skeleton, that's fine.If I see bone on a living person,
yeah, you're you're out. Iam watching through my fingers. But
no, Like, there was areally graphic werewolf fight and for some reason
that's what tipped me over. Okay, interesting, yeah, um oh there
(11:48):
was. The very first one wasreally rough with violence. Um they were,
but like that didn't really bother metoo much because it was months.
Like I know, I just saidwerewolves, but like I know, like
they were like big monsters that didn'treally look like anything, like they were
reptiles and lizards or like whatever theywere. But then actually, no,
the violence towards the end though, was towards the individuals, right exactly.
(12:09):
So there was that too, likeyou would see stuff like you'd see people
like get decapitated their head smash.Yeah, um it was yeah. You
know, maybe depending on the violence, sometimes I think you might be a
little bit desensitized because if it isanimated in a certain style, then you're
like, oh, well, it'sanimated, so you don't think of it
as much as violence, whereas likethe CGI one was with the werewolves like
(12:33):
kind of stuck to you more becauseit felt more real. There was a
speaking of the CGI like the morerealistic looking ones. There was a few
one in particular where I was like, there was like if you free freeze
framed on a few of them, you could have sworn it was real.
Um, the Lucky thirteen y CGI, and that was phenomenal, some of
(12:56):
the best I've ever seen. Seriously, I was like, there were certain
times when my eye kept playing trickson me. I was like, wait,
when is that a person? Whenshe was in a cockpit? Yes,
I was like, was her acharacter's name in Orange of the New
Black? Like poussee, I thinkit's how you pronounced it, um,
But yeah, she was. Shewas the lead in it, and she
did a great job. Yeah. That was one of my favorites. That's
(13:16):
one of my favorites too, okay, uh And I was you give me
a good dog fight, right yeah? Yeah. I mean I was born
the year the Top Gun came out, so there's that means something. But
yeah, there was so many timeswhen you're just because like there was a
lot of them that were good, but it was like that still a little
video gaming, you know, ButLucky thirteen, that one was phenomenal.
(13:37):
Yeah it's CGI. Yeah, umso okay. The first I would say,
half of the episodes like if yougo in order, which you don't
need to go in order. No, there's no reason too we did.
Uh. I felt like the objectificationof women was very strong. And I
(14:01):
understand that a lot of it hasto do with the style of animation or
I understand that, but there werecertain times when I just felt like women
were treated as for sure objects,if not like just pieces of meat.
And it was I'm not gonna lie, Like the very first night we watched,
(14:22):
that's pretty much all I saw,And I mean I was sticking it
out for the second night, andI'm really glad I did, because the
second night was a lot more.It was almost like they were trying to
redeem themselves from like the objectification ofwomen, spy, like putting some strong
females the latter half of the episodes, because the first half of the episodes,
(14:48):
women were either running away from crap. I mean, other than maybe
the first one, but the otherones it was a lot of It was
a lot of like women are therefort x or we're going to run after
women and try to murder murder them, and it was just it was hard
(15:09):
to watch as a woman. Itwas um that did not go unnoticed by
me. I know, it didn'tend. There was there was an like
like like the witness one really yeah, that one I really did not like
made me feel uncomfortable. The witnesswas the most overly sexual. Where as
it was going on, like shegoes into like this BDSM nightclub and then
(15:31):
she does this dance for no one. Well, no, I think she
was. I think that she was, like I think what my understanding was
like she was like being videoed andthen like it was, oh, it
was being strange, strange, andso the guy was like seeing her at
the same time, Oh okay, and then my understanding and like like we're
not ruining anything because like it waslike at the beginning and it's cyclical whatever,
(15:54):
um like she was naked and beatenand murdered. Yeah, and and
you're just like and then you seeher like running for her life and it's
just it was very oh, itjust it felt it felt wrong. It
did. That one was probably theworst one, and in that kind of
realm. Yeah, and then therewas like unpredictable in my opinion, very
(16:17):
like the twist was just like likethey made it seem like the twist was
supposed to be, like oh mygod, that was really no. I
had it. I saw it coming, comele away, um, I will
say so, like yeah, andthen when we got to the latter half,
we had some like female driven onesor like I mean, but there
was still some placed in there. It was like there was you know,
(16:38):
I mean like in the last onethere was a female like you see the
aftermath of a female sacrifice and inyeah, and it was very graphic,
was and it was unnecessary and likeright away again a piece of meat,
it was, yeah, And soyou know, or it's just like there
was a lot. I mean, did they show the male genitalia as much
(17:00):
as the female italia a lot,but it wasn't put in the same perspective.
So it was one of those thingswhere it felt it felt wrong in
some places. But I will sayas a positive note for all of them
as short stories, I was veryimpressed with the structure of each and every
(17:26):
single one of the episodes, becauseI felt like they spent just enough time
to tell their story and then getin and then get out. Ye like
it. None of them really feltoverworked, like Okay, we're in this
place way too long, or we'reexplaining this too much. Maybe the last
(17:47):
one was the only one that mademe feel that way a little bit.
Yeah, the very last one was, which like some Russian Soldiers, that
one made felt like a little long, But all the rest of them,
it felt very like sustinct, likegood storytelling. It was Yeah, for
me, there was. This onewas because there's eighteen and eighteen different stories
(18:08):
and eighteen different animation cells and everythinglike that, like it's gonna be hit
and miss. Yeah, it's gonnait's gonna be hit and miss. And
for me it was kind of halfand half okay, you know, like
I'm not saying like, oh mygod, Love Death and Robots was amazing.
I can't wait, like like youhave to watch it right now.
I'm just like, no, youshould watch it because there's a lot of
(18:30):
great stories, but there's also somereally bad ones in there too. Yeah,
Like there was a few that reallystuck out, like one guy in
a giunkyard. There like six differentways that Hitler died. Yeah, that
was it was just moronic, likethere was there was Yeah. I think
overall I appreciated what they were tryingto do absolutely, and I would love
(18:52):
to see more of this type ofthing, like more opportunities for me to
see different animation styles, needs forme to see different actors or voice actors
and different stories. Like it's justthe idea of being able to be like
I'm gonna watch this story and basicallyenjoying a short cinematic adventure was really fun,
(19:15):
Like it was a lot of funto watch. Um, what was
your favorite one? Uh, maybeleast favorite one too? Can you guess
which one my favorite one is?Was it the tofur Grace one? No,
that that was actually going to bemy guest for your favorite one?
It was I know you so well, I know you so well. There
(19:38):
was one that Yeah, we're callingthat the Tofur Grace one. It's called
ice Age, Yes, And it'sa really really cute story. It's adorable.
It's adorable, and it also hasum oh what is her name?
She looks like one of our friends. She was in she was in Oh
man, Um, she's Mary LizWinstead. That's right, that's right.
(20:00):
I can never remember her name. You have a friend who was a roommate
who looks exactly like her, exactlyalways what I think of creepy, it's
creepy. How close Like she wasin tin clover Field Lane. Yes,
Scott Pilgrim versus the world. Shewas Ramona Flier. I love her.
Yeah, she's great, she's great. I just can't remember her name.
Um. But yeah, Like thatwas the live action one where like in
(20:21):
the only live action one, butthe CGI was in their fridge. They
just moved in. They had areally old fridge. They opened it up
and they see a dead um microscopicwill ly mammoth. Yeah, but they
take it in kind They're just kindof like, that's weird. Yeah,
and they just kind of accept thefact that this whole thing is happening in
their fridge. And it was justso ador like I just loved it.
(20:42):
It was cute, like quick acivilization was rising in the yeah, exactly,
like overnight, it went from theBronze Age to an advanced civilization.
Yeah, like more advanced than ours. So it was just it was it
was fantastic. I loved it.It was hilarious. It was so cute.
Yeah, you're favorite one. I'mgonna have a herd if it's not
(21:03):
that, I'm not Even though Luckythirteen that was one of my favorites because
we talked about it, I'm notgoing to say that's my favorite one because
I headed down to two. Luckythirteen was one of them. But what
was the other one? Can youthink? M because it's uh, I
mean, there were some really greatstories and there was a lot of there
was a lot of fun, LikeThree Robots was a lot of fun.
Yeah, I liked that Three Robots. But you gotta give an answer now,
(21:26):
and you don't have to talk aboutthe title life which one I'm struggling.
I I was gonna guess Lucky thirteen, So I'm gonna let you tell
me what it is. If itwasn't Lucky thirteen, it would be Zema
Blue. Oh that one was reallygood. Yeah. Um, it's about
an artist. It's about an artist, and that's like as I was watching
it, Yeah, I was justlike, ah, this this of course
(21:48):
this is my favorite one because it'spretentious. It's a place in the future,
and yeah, it's about it's aboutan artist who makes these gigantic murals,
like like like as big as abuilding. Then he goes into the
stratosphere. The style is very uniqueand very like, yeah, yes it's
(22:11):
something I would buy. Yes modern, it's very modern and everything like that.
And the guy is a mystery whowears a gape. Yes, And
I'm just like, damn it,this is my favorite one. No,
that was a good one. Absolutely, that was stuck out in my head.
That one was only it was onlylike ten minutes to me. It
was the type that I felt likeeven though it was my favorite one,
it felt like the most rushed.Yeah it did. And I feel like
(22:33):
it could have been double the length, and then would it have been a
special I don't know. I don'tknow. Maybe maybe not. But it
was filled with I think the reasonwhy it's my favorite. I don't want
to spoil anything for you. Thereason why I was saying, because it
was filled with so many great concepts, so many sci fi concepts that are
really enjoy Like you had some littleDoctor Manhattan mixed in, you had some
(22:56):
robotics mixed in, you had evolutionof robotics, you had art modern art
when they had a lot of thiswhere like they had adaptations like right,
what is them? They called them, where like they'd put parts of um,
like robots on them, Like,oh, I wouldn't call it adaptations,
it was augmentation, augmentation, augmentationswhere they would have like robotics throughout
(23:21):
all of them. Yes, therewas a lot of that which was really
interesting to think about, Like,um, I mean some of them were
really disturbing, but other ones werelike, oh, that'd be I want
you know, you think about howmuch of that will become true, right
of like the reality of you know, we already have some of that,
but some of this is more like, yeah, I want that because that'll
(23:44):
help me be more efficient or moreor faster or you know, whatever it
is. I can't wait. That'swhy you like Zeema Blue, because you
probably would do that as much asyou could probably probably Oh my gosh,
I just bring it on. ButI really think it's fascinating that we both
chose probably the least sexual of theseries and honestly like it was the least
(24:07):
violent too. Let me say,I shouldn't say least violent, but the
least gruesome because it was war violence. But it wasn't like up in your
face. There was no blood oranything like that, like people were shot
from a distance or like it wasdog fighting in planes. Yeah, it's
true. Like our favorite ones hadto do with the n and and I
(24:32):
say, there was no violence, and so we really just liked the cute
stories. Um clearly. But Ilike, I said, three Robots,
I liked that made me laugh.Um, the Zema Blue I liked a
lot. There was thirteen was good. It was the dog fight one.
There was one that I there wasone I wanted to like more than than
(24:53):
it was. The concept was betterthan the execution and the quality of the
writing. It was the one whereI was just like, oh god,
this was written by a man.Oh the concept. Yeah, it was
interesting. It was called Beyond theAquila Rift. Yes, this one had
really great CGI and it was kindof like mixed with um like Avatar and
(25:14):
Aliens, and it was very JamesCameron is what I'm going for. It
was very James Cameron. Like. The story is they go like they're in
a they're in a a ship andthey go to sleep and but they're light
years off course, right, andthey're like like a hundred years went by
on Earth, but only like acouple of months. Very alienesque, Yeah,
very alien esque. And they wakeup and he sees a familiar face.
(25:36):
They have raunchy sex, raunchy cgisex. Oh, and the woman
is like saying all the right things. The woman is yes, is saying
like, I mean, textbook whatyou would think a man would want.
But not like just a man,but like a teenage boy would write like
a like a teenage boy would justlike, yeah, yeah, that's hot,
(25:56):
exactly, that's hot, hot,Parker's hot. That's the kind of
writing. And it's true. Butthe concept was great. But the concept
was fascinating and I wanted to likeit more. But like the writing alone
was like, oh, eye rollingconstantly. Yeah, yeah, it's so
(26:18):
true. But but yeah, yeah, I mean we liked it. I
think we like it. I thinkwe liked I think we like it overall.
No, we like we like theidea of it. Yes, I
liked the idea of it. Iliked the animation, seeing different animation,
seeing different stories. We liked thecute ones clearly or or non violent over
the violence and uh, but yeah, I think it was interesting to watch
(26:42):
for sure, absolutely, And soyou guys should check it, like as
as the girl said, watched thetrailer first to see it. Yeah,
because if it's not your thing,it's violent. It's violent. And also
like there was one time, likein the first episode, like um,
like two people started going at itum. I don't know why I phrase
it that way. There they werestarting to have sex and I hit the
fast forward button real quick. Iwas just like, oh, this is
(27:03):
going to be annoying, and Ihit it, and then something monumental happened
in between. I was like,I think you did that in the alienesque
one too, and you're like, dang it, I missed. We keep
missing. I was like, Ican't fast forward it key plot points.
Well, when you'll have like tenminutes to tell the story, porn things
are going to happen during the sexscenes apparently, Okay, well there we
(27:26):
go. I don't want to talkabout my least favorite ones because that's fine.
Life's too short, just like these. So we we gave a few
episodes. We have not all ofthem. No, like part two of
season five of Arrest, development isout and someone just needs to take it
out back and shoot it. It'sjust it's terrible. It's terrible. It
(27:48):
is positively terrible, not even ashadow. It's like we we were looking
at each other and we're like,this isn't arrest development. I mean we've
said that before because we've talked aboutwatching the other seasons that were like,
you know the Netflix version, Yeah, seas season four was the first Netflix
one. But I mean it's justthis season it seems like they have more
(28:11):
of the cast together except for portshow, right, um, but it
just feels so it feels so whythe whole time, I'm just like,
why am I watching this? We'rewatching it out of loyalty to something that
died years ago, exactly because eventhough it has some of the same people
involved behind the scenes, most ofthe same people involved behind the scenes,
(28:33):
and like the same actor is playingthe same characters. While you're watching,
you're just like, these are notthe characters I know. Are not?
This is not the show that Iknow in love or it almost feels like
sometimes when they're like insisting upon themselvesso like they'll make a joke that we
had in the good years, andit's almost like sad. It's like you're
like pathetic, Like when they didthe mister f joke. Yeah, like
(28:56):
somebody said mister F. And thenyou hear the F and you're just like,
no, sweetie, no, you'reyou're no, that was years ago
and you missed the boat. Yeah, or like, I mean, we've
only watched a few episodes, butlike our job starts going like like he
did in you know, the firstseason or whatever it was, and it's
(29:19):
just it feels like him pretending yes, and he's pretending to be Joe,
intending to be Job. No,like he's he's even like it's it's like,
oh, yeah, this is howthey want me to act, so
I'm going to act. It's likeeveryone's phoning it in, like Aliah Saquat.
I think that's how you say hername. I never actually remember how's
(29:41):
their name? The woman who playsmaybe Yeah. So far, she's been
the only thing that's made me laugh. Yes, me too, and she's
hilarious. Oh yeah. But it'sjust like I've chuckled a few times in
the first episode. I'm saying chuckled, not laughing, chuckled, where I
was just like like I did thatthree times in a twenty two minute episode.
Yeah, And it's just it's exhausting. Yeah, it's exhausting to watch
(30:06):
and it's just it's it's you lookat the writing, because that's the That
was the best thing about the firstthree seasons was the writing. It was
so intricate, and it referenced itself, and it like a joke would come
up in the middle that was referencedtwo episodes ago, and then all of
a sudden it would pay off inthe next It was just it was so
interwoven and perfect, and then yousee this monstrosity and it's written as if
(30:32):
it's not even trying to be funny. Right, That's what's really weird about
it is that going through the motions, Yeah, it's like they're like,
Oh, we gotta get this plotpoint in. We gotta get this character
from this place to this place. What's the least funny way we can do
that. Oh, we'll just explainit the via narration, right. And
I think the thing about or adevelopment in the first three seasons is you
(30:52):
could say, oh, yeah,I remember the one about the banana stand,
or I think that reference might bea little too bad. That's true,
that's right, a really bad examplelike the one where the banana stand
burned down. That's right, That'swhat I meant. Actually, but but
you kind of kind okay, somaybe I am working here all right,
but or like, um, hey, remember the one where Rita and for
(31:18):
British i'se only for British Eyse only, you know, like so you remember
them and because they're not so convoluted, whereas I feel like the plot points
here are just like so messy andit's like the characters are trying to make
sense of it, and like forthe audience sake, it's like, okay,
well remember this person's here and thisperson lost this, and this person
(31:41):
has been in jail and this it'slike too much. And also the thing
is, though, is that whenlike there was a lot of there's always
been a lot of exposition and arresteddevelopment. I know, no, no,
no, I'm not criticizing you whatsoever. I'm agreeing with you. Like
there was there's always been a lotof exposition and arrest development, but it
was much tighter at the beginning. And it's just like here's what happened last
(32:02):
week, kind of there you go. Now you can enjoy like thirty seconds,
sixty seconds, now enjoy. Butwhat's different is like they never did
a previous like oh that's not true. But like most of the time,
they interwove it into the story atthe beginning, but it was also a
show that was week to week andand they tried to and that was one
big problem that they had, isthat like audiences would get lost because they
(32:25):
would fail. And that's why itfailed is because there was a lot going
on, but it was coherent ifyou kept up with it. Right with
this show with it Since it wenton Netflix, they're dropping the entire season
all at once. People are bingingthis. You don't need to do mountains
of exposition every single episode like youdid in the early two thousands. It's
(32:45):
like they forgot Yeah, they forgottheir format. Now, well no they
no. I think what they're doingis they're too beholden to it. They're
told that they're now on a streamingservice. Yes, I see what you
did. Misunderstood what you Yeah, you don't have to do all that.
You don't have to do that allthat, And it's just it's just not
even a shade of what it oncewas. It's not. And it's just
(33:07):
like I read a Guardian article onit, and you could tell that the
writer was a fan because he's justlike he's like it's it's it's sad that
we have to mourn this show twice. Yeah, it's so true, but
it's like it was resurrected. Everybodywanted it to be resurrected, but then
it came, and then everybody wishedthat it never was exactly and that's where
we are sad. It's really sad. Yeah, but we did watch something
(33:29):
good. We did. We watchedsomething that was way more entertaining than I
expected it to be. Um.So we watched Triple Frontier with Ben Affleck
and Oscar Isaac. His name Idon't know why, I just say Poe
and his name in this was mPope Pope And I was like halfway through
(33:50):
the movie, I was like,Tristan, is his name Poe again?
Because there were so many times thatthey would say like po get over here,
and it was like, wait, did he say Pope or Pope?
It's like, is it in hiscontract that he needs to be Pope in
every movie? He asked her Isaacas Poe? Um. Yeah. But
there was also un Charlie Hunman whowas in um oh that oh, that
(34:15):
Sons of Anarchy show on FX.Yeah. He was also latest in the
Robin Hood movie with Jude Law,which my mom loved, okay, Mike,
I think she just loves him,and my sister really likes him too.
He's very pretty to look at,He's very well built. But I
just I just he does this thingwhere he elongates his words and I'm just
(34:36):
just talk faster. Uh. Andthen there was also um uh uh headman,
hears you what was his name again? Garrett Headland Okay, who was
in Tron Legacy. Like I knowhim from Trying Legacy. Yeah, I
didn't realize we should watch Tron Legacytonight. You No, No, I
(34:59):
love him in Tron Legacy, andI always thought that he was going to
be Like when I saw him,I was like, he's going to be
a star, Like he's gonna bebig, and he hasn't been. No,
he could still happen, but Ibelieve in him. I believe in
Garrett Headland. Um. And there'salso Pedro Pascal, yeah, who made
it big and came of Thrones isand is going to be in the new
(35:20):
Star Wars TV show live Action StarWars student show called The Mandalorian. He's
going to be the Mandalorian. Yeah. So this cast was pretty impressive.
This was a if I made borrowa phrase from Lee hutcheson up Banger cast
I love it. Yeah, No, it was fantastic cast. Um.
And we had seen previews for this, uh you know on Netflix, Yeah,
(35:44):
kind of like okay, all right, something on Netflix. All right,
we'll check it out. Yeah. But um, we started watching it
and we were super impressed. Idon't want to give it too much away
because I want you to watch it. Um. There was a lot of
language, um, but which Tristandidn't even realize what was going on because
(36:04):
he's so di sensized. But um, this story was fascinating and it was
really interesting to see something that likeyou didn't see coming. Like there was
a lot of times when we werelike, wait, when's the action,
Like when's the when's the twist coming? It was right, and it's not
a bad way, no, butin like a oh I didn't see that
(36:29):
coming way. For those of youwho don't know, the story is about
a bunch of um ex military peopleand some of them have kind of fallen
on hard times. One is stillin the military. Is Pope still in
the military or he's I think he'slike under Actually, no, I think
they're all ex military. I thinkhe was just working as an advisor,
but they're all ex military and umoscar Isaac um he wants to take out
(36:53):
this drug lord in Brazil, right. He's like, here's the thing.
We can take out this this druglord in Brazil and we can you'll all
his cash, right, and wejust got to figure out a way to
get out of Brazil. And he'slike, I need a team. And
it was one of those it was. It was it's like a heist movie.
It's a heist movie in the way, and it's also a coming out
of retirement for one last job.Like it's a trope, but it works,
(37:17):
and so that's the story. Andso like these guys go and do
it, and they and they andthen it's all about them trying to get
out of the country. We're notwe're not spoiling anything. This is in
the trailer and so when you seeit, you're just like, oh,
well, things are going to gohorribly wrong. But as you're watching it,
you're just like, wait, wait, when is it going to go
horribly wrong? Because you're just likeit should have happened now, like movie
(37:38):
mechanics should have told us that itshould have happened here, not here exactly,
And that's really cool as a moviegoer to kind of have your expectations
subverted a little bit in a goodway. Not a director saying screw you,
I'm not going to give you whatyou want like some other directors.
We could mention, um, butthe writing way great. Yeah, And
(38:00):
I felt like the guys really soldthe chemistry. Yes that you felt like
they were old war buddies. Yeah, you did. And what was really
interesting to me is like there wasa point where you just see them kind
of like um stalking and you onlyhear their audio of them talking to each
other, and I was like, this is really good. There was like
(38:21):
a moment there where I was like, I am really engaged in all of
these characters and I don't see anyof their faces, and I know who's
who and I know their personalities, and we're only fifteen minutes in, and
I'm just super impressed with how intothis I am. And like you said,
the chemistry between all of the peoplelike in this crew of ex military
(38:45):
was just it was really good.It was really good. It was as
I love those movies where you don'texpect a lot from them, and as
you're watching it, you're just like, wait, holy crap, this is
a good movie. Yeah, likeyou kind of basically you kind of sit
up in your seat a little, but you're like, oh wait, wait,
no, this, oh wait, this is good. This is gonna
be entertaining. I had that samesensation with Game Night. You keep talking
(39:07):
about shut up, I'm gonna I'mnever gonna stop talking about Game Night.
But No, with Game Night,I was just like it was a free
rental. It didn't cost us anything, and it was kind of like,
okay, whatever, it's gonna bemiddle of the road comedy. And then
I'm just like, oh wow, this is really funny. That's how it
was with Ripple Frontier and that wasyour favorite movie or twenty eighteen. No,
this was really good. So Idon't want to we don't. We're
(39:27):
not gonna give anything away that wasn'tin the trailer. Do not look at
it as a pure action film, because it's a movie that takes its time
in a good way, in agood way, and there is action in
it, and there's some really greatactions, some really gripping moments, but
it is not all throughout no,And it shouldn't be and you know it.
To be honest, I was afraidof it being all like I when
I saw the trailer, I waslike, I don't know if it's gonna
(39:49):
be my type of movie because itlooks like too much action, right,
and I'm not really a huge likewar movie. That's why I kind of
thought it was like, oh,it kind of looks like war movie ish,
and I'm not a huge fan ofthose. But this one was so
much more character driven. It waslike, I thought, pretty good writing,
and I really enjoyed it. Yeah, so give it a shot.
(40:13):
The director is JC Chandor. Ithink that's how you pronounced it, and
he was like. The only otherstuff that I've seen of his was Margin
Call, which was about um,it was about Wall Street. Well,
it was about Wall Street trading andright before the financial collapse in two thousand
and eight. Okay, Um,I didn't really dig it that much.
(40:34):
He also did All Is Lost withRobert Redford and also A Most Violent Year.
He was a producer and I thinkhe might have directed it too,
I'm not quite sure. Um,but A Most Violent Year UM, which
with also had Oscarize it again. It I haven't seen that one, but
I kind of want to see hisother works just because I was so impressed,
yea, with how this was directedand how this was was put together.
(40:57):
He also wrote the screenplay as wellwith Mark Bole, and Mark Bole
has done the hurt Locker and ZeroDark thirty, So this guy knows how
to right absolutely war action. Definitely. Yeah, but give it a shot.
If you haven't watched it, andif you have, let us know
what you thought about it. Wereyou as impressed as we were? Yeah?
(41:19):
Like did it just connect with us? And this isn't universally loved?
Like I went on Letterbox just actuallybefore we watched it, I went in
Letterbox and it has an average ratingof three point two out of five stars.
Really, and so that's why Ithought. I was just like,
oh, this is going to bemiddle of the road, you know,
like hopefully it'll be entertaining, butI'm sure it's nothing great, but boom,
Like I gave it. I gaveit four stars. I went too
easy and easy for Yeah. Imean this was one of those movies where,
(41:43):
like I, it's just just showingyou that, like Netflix is really
pulling out all the stuff because thisis super entertaining, super well done,
and like it would have been reallyentertaining to see on the big screen.
It would it would have been worthlesson the big screen, and we do
(42:04):
not say that they had. Yeah, it's just crazy. It also makes
me wonder about the irishman. Ohyou know, I'm just like, are
we going to see that and think, oh man, that we should have
seen this on the big screen becauseof all the talent that's in it.
That's really true, But I don'tknow. We'll see, well, we'll
see, all right. Well, thank you guys so much for listening,
and also thank you for writing inand please write in more. We love
(42:25):
hearing from you guys. We lovehearing from you guys so much. And
also if you, um, ifyou haven't already, please write us a
review on iTunes. And also,um, we've gotten some notes from some
people if you're not on iTunes, like if you don't have an iPhone or
you don't really use iTunes. Imean, like anybody with a desktop computer
can download iTunes, but I meannot everybody has a desktop anymore, so
(42:47):
I mean just give us, giveus a rating wherever you listen to us
on like whether it's stitcher or speckeror whatever made up words you know,
like that of these things and ifif that's a case, like we don't
always get all of those, soif you want to give us, send
us a screenshot via on social mediaor via email or something like that.
Like absolutely, you can do thattoo. And womantioned you on the show.
(43:08):
So we love you, guys, and hopefully you'll enjoy this Netflix weekend
as much as we have. Absolutely, I love you. I know it's
going. Yes, marry me.I love you, and I like you.
I love you and I like you. I love that woman. I
(43:29):
love a more than shots love blood. Yeah,
