(00:00):
Hi, Bethany Mantalo. Here youhave joined us for the magnificent monthly Millwell
Podcast, which features thoughts from thepanel about what affects the beautiful game and
Millwell enjoy Ready for Christmas. Helloeveryone, and welcome to this season's third
No One Likes Us Talking Monthly Show. I'm your host Males Slalnson, and
(00:20):
with me I have the No OneLikes Us Talking Monthly Show team, Phil
Coleman and Ted Robinson. Not everybodylikes them, but they don't care,
even Phil mate, even most greatThanks Eve and Ted mate, Yeah,
great mate, good good Phil.I wanted to come to you first because
(00:43):
there's a shocking stat that's come tomy attention. We've played ten ten home
games at ten games at home thisseason, and out of those ten games,
we've got two wins in the drawerand the rest of losses. What
do you make of that? Thatsounds shocking and it looks even worse on
paper. But as a next player, you told nobody's got a god given
(01:06):
right to win at home, evenat the Den when he was hostile and
the old Den, you just gotno god given right to win a game.
And for me, teams have donetheir homework on us. They know
they've all got scouts, they've allgot analysts, they know how weaknesses they're
watching us, and it just lookslike they've done that homework and they know
(01:30):
how we line up, they knowhow we play. They change their formations
and tactics and they look like they'vestopped us having a lot of success from
set pieces. They certainly sit backand I've seen more and more teams doing
this than they hit us on thecounter attack. One team did it last
(01:52):
year. I was down there Huddersfieldlast season. They literally had eleven behind
the ball in their old last thirdand then the one chance they attacked is
edited in. And then I've seenother counter attacking said I think Leeds scored
two goals on the counter attack thisseason. Commentary Saturday certainly soaked it up
and then hit us with a quickcouple of quick breaks as well. So
(02:15):
I think we've got to find adifferent way of winning games. I think
we might have to go back tomaking sure that we're a solid defensive unit.
But that's not difficult, and I'llsay, had some players believe it
or not, they might not feelvery comfortable playing at home when the boozs
are ringing around the place and everyonewants to row it out. Players,
(02:36):
they're professionals and they should know whatto do and they should be focusing on
the game. But they're human AndI had known players and I bet fans
could tell you players that just didnot fancy playing at home, particularly at
the old Den. Some players mightmight not enjoy it playing at home at
the Den now they might be fairlyaway games where there's a bit less pressure
on them, they're not expected towin, and then that atmosph then is
(03:00):
getting into them. But yeah, certainly some players might fancy playing away rather
than at home. So but forme, there's there's a there's good sides
in this division. Just think aboutsome of the names Leeds, Leicester,
Southampton, Southerland. Big teams, great budgets, great players, and I
think every one of our games isa cup final. And I say,
(03:20):
if we don't get it right, they've done their homework and they can do
us. Agreed, mate, Ted, you're going anything to add to that,
well, yeah, I mean Iagree with a lot of what Field
has been saying there obviously, Imean it's I think one of the things
now is that the way that footballhas changed, in the way that's played
and the way that the side settheir self up, a lot of it
is suited to counter attack in football, and when you play at home,
(03:43):
the emphasis is always on you toyou know, pack inside as we say.
I don't think this is only aproblem with Millwall, you know.
I mean a lot of sides willsit back when they're playing away. We
do the same when we go away. We play slightly differently. You know.
We showed that you know, shitwill be and the wins that we've
had ourselves. But the thing withus as mill Wolf fans, it's strange
(04:04):
and we can't get our head aroundit because more often than not we've had
a fortress at home, you know, And so it goes against the grain
to be seeing us losing so manygames home. But like Phil said,
this championship this year, there's strongersides. I think we you know,
(04:25):
we've we've strengthened our squad, butso as everybody else. And you've got
to get things right in your ownneed. And now you play, you
know, and at home, Ithink you have to change your tactics slightly,
I would say, or try to. And what what you do when
you go away from home. Butlook, it's something that we've got to
(04:46):
improve on. Under Gary Roue wewas very much the other way round.
We didn't lose many at home, but we couldn't get a win away.
So until this season is you know, so it's strange. I don't think
it's going to take too much tocorrect it, but like if it quite
rightly points out every game that weplay as a cup final, and you
(05:09):
know, we have to really treatthem like cup ties because you've given nothing
in this division and you've got nodivine right to be winners at home.
It's as simple as that. Thegames out there to be one. And
at the moment were we you know, we've we've struggled a bit to get
ourselves gain The one thing in thisdivision, more than anything, is to
(05:30):
get the first goal on the ball. Once you get the first goal on
the ball, then the other theopposition come out a little bit more at
you, and so again it reversesit. You can counter attack them.
But listen, I'm hopeful that Joewithin time will sort out, sort it
out and we'll be back to themgood old days of seeing us win fifty
nine games at home on the trot. Wouldn't that be nice? Miles said,
(05:55):
I also think our success, oursuccess last year and the year before,
you know, we're punching. Weare punching. We're sitting there in
the playoffs. We only just missout. The expectations kick in for this
season. We get some new playersin that there's changes to the playing staff
and I can think of Caffeine Orton, I can think of the Norri these
(06:15):
guys in this bit they've come in, so that changes the dynamic. And
then all of a sudden there's injuriesas well. Well. That is tough
for any manager, you know, get you get some top players go out
injured. One of them. Ithought Brian would have shored up that left
hand side coming in from Fulham. These players are injured, so changes new
players, and then all of asudden you get a new manager. So
(06:38):
I wouldn't say it's been the bestwhat ten weeks to a season in terms
of setting in new players, theexpectations of sky after last year, we're
going to get the playoffs again,No, we're not. The league's even
tougher this year. And then I'llsee you get new players and they're trying
to settle in and injuries as well, So I would say it's not an
(06:58):
excuse, but there is some disruptthere over the last ten weeks, particularly
the last two or three weeks. But all that's up. Yeah, it
might be the opposition. I agree, I agree. I mean, I
still believe we've got a better squadthis year than we had last year.
I think we've made some good buyersin the summer that But like you say,
what people haven't really spoken about is, as you quite rightly point out,
(07:21):
the disruption that's gone on to theteam with injuries and one thing and
another. You know, no soonerthan there's a bit vizier he gets injured,
Joe Bryant just begins to play hisbest gets injured. Hutchinson, who's
the stallwalk of our defense to acertain extent, he gets injured. You
know all these things. You know, it upsets the team, don't it,
(07:44):
And we just need a settling downperiod. I think where there's a
time where we have continued full squadto pick from and we'll be fine.
I think definitely the stronger squad thisyear. Ye I've seen people saying we
ain't got the players to do this. We ain't got the players do that.
We've probably got the strongest squad we'vewell, we have got the strongest
cop we've had in years this year. What do you mean we don't for
(08:05):
the players to do this and that, Well, that is it. We
haven't when they're injured, you know, Dunk and what was another one springs
to mind, Leonard. It wasin a rich vainer form and then all
of a sudden he's out for twoor three four weeks, you know.
Yeah, it all disrupts the teamwhen it's settling down and when it's starting
(08:26):
to build any momentum that we've hadsome extemes to have happened, and we've
lost players, you know, andthat's just something that you have to get
on with. We all know that. But with all the people I agree
with you, I've had a fewof them say to me, we need
to get to January to get peoplewhen well, I don't think he's inherited
a bad squad. I just thinkwe need a little bit more luck in
(08:48):
the injury front, and you know, get a few games together where we
could literally pick the same side,or the side picks itself, whatever way
you want to put it. Aroundand I'm sure we'll be fine. There's
so many dynamics to there's so manydynamics to a team. You build partnerships.
Center backs build a partnership with theirfullbacks. Center backs build a partnership
(09:09):
with a goalkeeper. The goalkeeper buildsand partnership with a whole of the defense,
the midfield, the strikers, andthe wingers. You build little partnerships
where there was overlaps or I'll stayand let the winger do his stuff,
and you need to understand how itall works and his jigsaw. And it's
even worse when you're trying to defendbecause you've got some defenders who are really
quick, some defenders who are slow. Someone to drop off. Some don't
(09:31):
want to mark, they want tosweep, so to speak. And it's
putting all that together in the cohesiveteam that everybody knows. And I keep
harping on about eighty seven eighty eight. I couldn't get in that side,
but every single player on that pitchand every single fan on that pitch probably
knew what the players would do it. You know, you knew Brian Nolan
was a great shot stopper, Youknew the two fallbacks, nobody to get
(09:52):
past them. You knew how twowingers would get past the opposition. You
knew Tony Cascarino and Telly sharing howto partnership one near one fire. I'll
get crosses into them, ones atbackstick, ones for the herd. Lock
would come steaming through from midfield.Putting that together and then having competition for
places in the dugout. You knowwhat I don't see is I don't see
(10:13):
too much competition for places across theback four. So injuries Leonard Hutchinson,
they would be two key missies forme. Hardy's got his chance to come.
Him look looked absolute quality. Butit's putting it all together. It's
putting all the jigsaw puzzle together andsaying there's a cohesive team that they know
everything backwards, they know the setpieces, they know what we're going to
(10:33):
do defensively. We've got different patternsof play up front, and it takes
a lot of time. It takesa lot of time, and for me,
disruptions absolutely kill you. They killyour momentum when you just got everything
bedded in and then you pray thatthe guy coming off the bench just seamlessly
transitions. But I'd probably say BillyMitchell is not Deny Denari is not Saddle.
(10:56):
They're all slightly different. So it'sunderstanding their roles in the team as
well, but it hasn't helped, that's for sure. That's an example field
of midfield. When you think aboutit. We had Alan Campbell come in
and it seemed to be he wasthe first choice to go alongside the Norri.
De Norri was news to the team. They seem to be settling down
a little bit, and then allof a sudden there's a change of manager,
(11:20):
so in comes George Saville. NowI like to look at the Saville
de Norri midfield, if you knowwhat I mean. I think they compliment
one of the other pretty well. But he is still a bedding in time
for him. They've only played acouple of games together. So you know,
as we say, there's what we'retalking about, there's perfect example there.
Alan Campbell has come to this club. He may not get a looking
(11:43):
again, he might not be fanciedby Joe Edwards. You know, Billy
Mitchell's got to bide his time andwhen he gets the opportunity, he's got
to, you know, show thathe should be the number one in the
middle of the park. But againit's all a matter of knitting together.
Like you're quite right say, Ifeel every team is is a matter of
partnerships across the pitch and I stillthink this squad is still trying to find
(12:07):
their way with it. George Animan'sanother one. All of a sudden he's
back in, but he's missed mostof the season, so he's finding his
way. You know. The continuityof the team from the start of the
season to now has been literally nonexistent, you know. So I still
think there's much better time to headfor this team and hope we do what
we used to do with Route It, which has come good. At the
(12:28):
next part of the season. We'lltake a break there and hear from myself
and Stan Godwin talking about local nonleague side Burmonsey Town. Burmersey Town You
heard of them, but what whatabout them? They're a football club based
(12:50):
in Robie. They're currently members ofthe Kent Football League Premier Division and play
at the Saint Paul Sports Ground. The ground shaw with Fisher on matchdays.
It's where the mill Lionesses, Romansand Pride player on Sundays. Oh yeah,
I know well, if Millwall wereaway, I'll get along check out
the fixtures and details on the BurnseyTown website. I will, I will
(13:13):
give it a go. Since thelast monthly show, there's been big,
big changes to the club you mentionedbefore, a new manager we'll go around
it. Stepped down from his roleas the clubs manager by mutual termination of
his contract, and the Lions boardappointed former England Under twenty one's head coach
(13:35):
and the former Chelsea backroom staff memberwho was in the backroom staff during the
twenty twenty one Champions League win,Joe Edwards, Ted, would you make
any appointment? Well, look,is it sort of fashionable appointment in a
sense, you know, And I'mall for young people in whatever form,
whether it's players or managers or He'sgot a very good sort of pedigree we
(14:00):
say in the background of clubs andseems to be highly fault of from different
people. I think we all understandthat the step up from where he's been
to what he's doing now as headcoach or manager, whatever way you want
to call it, is a bigstep. There's always sometimes people are more
(14:20):
suited to being the second man orbeing the assistant, you know, There's
been plenty of really good coaches thathaven't been great managers, you know,
So time will tell. With Joe. I'm all forgiving him a go and
hopefully he can bring his ideas intothis squad because I think, to be
(14:45):
honest, I think Gary Rowe hadlost his drive at Millwall. There was
lots of things going on in thebackground. We all know there was a
bit of a campaign by the fansbecause they thought the football was a bit
boring and all that sort of stuff, which I never never thought. But
what I've noticed in the first twogames at Joe zad we are changing our
(15:07):
style in a sense because to havesixty two possession as we did on Saturday
against Coventry is a complete change tohow it was under Gary row. We
seem to have forty percent at themost when he's playing sides. But it
doesn't matter to me, Miles, about how you play, with what possession
(15:28):
style of play. We all liketo see lovely football being played. It's
all about the result at the endof the day. Is getting that result.
So I think you've got to giveJoe time. He's certainly trying to
get some ideas in them already. He seems to have given the boys a
bit of confidence. Even despite thedefeat on Saturday. They seem to be
more confident with their self on theball, So he's obviously trying to get
(15:52):
them to play. But it's anymanager coming in to Millwall, whether it
would been Joe who's not a veryexperienced guy, or whether it had been
someone like was the guy who waslooking at Jones who's done it before with
another football club. He's still gamble. There's nothing guaranteed. Some managers are
(16:17):
suited the club somes, ain't.We all thought Olliway was going to be
a good appointment. It turned outto be a terrible one. So I'm
just hoping that Joe can eventually showus with his time here that he deserved
to be put up to being ahead coach. He's got all the credentials
to be a very good head coachand let's hope he goes on to prove
it. Well, you've took thewords right out one Marth their ted Phil,
(16:41):
what would you like to add there? I want to say something a
certain percentage of fans won't like. But Joe Edwards has got some big shoes
to fill, because if I touchback on Gary Rowit uh, he kept
us in this league. We hadsuccess. It might have been, might
not have been the ultimate success ofgetting promotion. But when you're sitting there
(17:03):
a Mile Football club in a reallytough list, the Championship is the second
tier of football. It's the bestsecond tier of football in the world.
You know. There's thirty thousand, thirty five forty thousand crowds, you know,
and Gary Rowwack got us up intothe playoff areas. We're in the
top half of four seasons. Probablyoverachieved with a solid, hard working team.
(17:26):
For me, you've got in betterplayers season on season. It was
really great to see four better playerscome in and have five better players come
in. He got some good loansin in the back four and with those
playoffs, as I mentioned earlier,I think it created higher expectations. Now
moving on, you appoint Joe Edwards, nowhere near as experienced as Gary Rau
(17:48):
in the nit degree of the Championshipfootball. A gamble or brilliance from James
Berelson. As you said, Ted, time will tell because it's a bloody
big jump from an assistant manager andan under twenty ones manager. Because now
Joebe. He's in charge. He'sin total charge. He's now in charge
(18:11):
with all the signings, he's goingto release players. He's in charge of
the training, the tactics, thesubstitutions. He might even be in charge
of the diet, the warm up, he might have changed it all.
They're all his decisions now. Doeshe lack a bit of experience? Probably?
Is he highly rated listening to peopleand reading what people have said.
(18:33):
But as you mentioned said, fansare going to have to be patient,
They're going to have to support him, and he's going to need time.
And by time, I mean hewill probably need at least two transfer windows,
loads of time on the training ground. But the games come so thick
and fast, and at the momentsome of the players it will be rest,
(18:55):
recover play again. Good news is, as we mentioned earlier, the
injured players are coming back because heneeds those players in. He may well
need to get rid of some someplayers because the way that he's trying to
play, you're probably going to finda few players out. You're probably going
to find out some players cannot playhis possession based football, trying to get
higher up the pitch, So somemight have to leave because they can't buy
(19:18):
into it that they physically technically can'tget into it. I would probably say
right now, his objective is stayingin this league whilst he builds what he
wants because it is a tough oneto transition. We can have one hundred
percent possession or ninety nine percent position, the opposition get one and score.
So it's going to take time, and I think fans are going to have
to be patient. Some of themgot their will, they got what they
(19:41):
wanted. Gary Rowitt left and they'vegot a new manager and the expectations are
that we're probably going to pass pantsoff teams and win easily. Well,
commentary just gave us a little workkicking the teeth to say just take the
time and be patient and give himmore time. But I wish him well
and he comes highly regarded. Butas I keep on mentioning time and time
I come on his show, thechampionship is a tough old league, and
(20:04):
that you've got to win games, and it doesn't matter how you win them
through route one, through crosses, through set pieces, or through possession based
football. You've got to win games. And I would say right now,
staying in this league is a priority. How he does that is a tough
one, but I wish him well, I really don't. And if he
can get the team playing and scoringgoals, you have done incredibly, will
(20:27):
to follow on from the last fouryears. That's a problem for you,
well, I mean patience is thekey, as we say. But the
problem for Joe Edwards I think ishe's got as you you've made the point
really, but it's a tough actto follow what Gary row It achieved.
I think people don't really give himthe credit for and the travel for Joe
Edwards is he's going to be gaugedagainst that. You know, people are
(20:51):
just naturally thinking because we got thatclose to the playoffs last year, one
game or one half of football awayfrom being in the playoffs, they think
change of manager, we should bedoing better than that. Well it might
well just show up how good Garryrat was and what he've actually achieved.
Like you say, I don't thinknobody's recognized his achievement really, But you
(21:14):
know, I hope and pray thatMillill fans give Joe Edwards the time to
put together this side because as yousay, I would say, now at
this moment in time, that theambition has got to beat the stay in
this division number one with hopefully JoeEdward's getting all these ideas and perhaps a
few players in that he wants afew players out that don't want to be
(21:38):
here and all that sort of stuff, and next year he'd be ready to
have a right go at it.But I mean, I still think there's
a lot of players in this sidethat will make us capable side and a
good enough side to give it ago this year. But it's that quickly
joke and get it through and ourpatient, our fans are going to be
because he's got a very high standardto try and match. You've got Gary
(22:02):
row At squad, and Gary rowAt squad was coached and conditioned and tactics
and set plays into what Gary Rowtwants wanted. Now Joe Rivers has come
in and they've got a transition intowhat he wants. And I'll promise you
some people will go and some peoplewill stay and manage and adapt and buy
in and be capable on the trainingground and in matches in the championship,
(22:26):
and some people won't. And I'vehad experience, you know, and we
heart want it time and time again. But Millwell Football Club at one stage
in nineteen seventy nine eighty had thebest youth team in the whole country.
But they bought Peter Anderson as thenew manager. He didn't want any of
us, you know, So I'llgive you example. Paul Robinson was replaced
(22:48):
by Phil Wollman. One was eighteen, one was thirty, So aid manager
and be manager. Changes b doesn'twant what he's previously had. There will
be changes, but that takes time. Because we have transfer windows now.
You can't just buy and sell wheneveryou want, so you've got to wait
till January, and then you've gotto wait till the summer whilst staying in
this league. And he will beworking it out or he can't pass the
(23:12):
ball, and that he looks underpressure and he can't find space for me,
and he's got no place at theback, and oh he's not really
what I'm looking for as a striker. And it will take a lot of
time and it could take two yearsto completely and utterly rebuild and shape what
he wants. But hopefully it's alot quicker than that, because I agree
that there are quality players in thisside. You know, if I've seen.
(23:33):
The likes are hardly. He doesit for me as a defender,
the Nori Norton Cuffey does it forme. I love what more because he
terrifies me because he's quick. Sothere are players in that team that you
know, I have got the capabilityof playing in a possession based football team
and holding their own more than enough. You say that mate about it could
take two years, but you hopehe's quicker. I also hope it's quicker
(23:56):
because managers don't go a head.Coaches don't get much time in football is
days today, No, not atall. And I'll give you one.
I'll give you one molded. Thenext four games I would like to be
playing its Wich, Cardiff, Sunderlandand Leicester and there's only there's only one
of them I own and they're allin the top seven. Cardiff have crept
(24:18):
up there so they're doing something right. Leicester Premier League, se Sunderland bought
great players. It's which top ofthe league. You know, these are
tough away games and one one athont But the next four games are you
going to find him out? Butthey're coming thick and fast. It's almost
Saturday Tuesday, Saturday. You know, they're coming thick and fast, so
there's not a lot of time onthe training ground to let them recover,
have the massage, do the strategies, and then right we've got to start
(24:41):
a bit packed and I want itdone like this, and I want it
done so he hasn't got an awfullot of time, but he has got
some experienced players. I will saythat there's a lot of experience in that
team. Now. It may wellbe that the younger players might have to
bude their time again because you've gotto focus on getting a settled side that
buys it what he wants. Sosome of the fans that keep calling for
the young lads might have to holdhold on for a while. It's funny,
(25:04):
don't feel like you say quite rightly? Tough games coming up, and
that three of them away from home, but the way we've been playing so
far this season, that might notbe such a bad thing against against good
sides. And I actually said touh make mine walking out on Saturday and
the whole bloody ell we've lost freeand I said, do you know what
(25:25):
we've got? Ipswich on Wednesday night, and if ever I was going to
have a bet on meal, it'dprobably be Wednesday because they'd be so priced
out, because it's which are flyingand going so well that you probably get
the best price you could ever geton meal. Will winning a game,
and the thing is in my brainthey are capable of beating Ipswich at Ipswich,
and so it is a strange one. But like you say, if
(25:47):
you look at the games and youstudy them too much, it frightens the
life out of you, really. But but I'm sort of too confident that
within them gun we can get goingand get get a few points exactly that
sort of game ten because everyone wasshouting it out and bowing him and everything
else. And I'm thinking Plymouth away, Plymouth, totally unbeaten, and we've
(26:08):
just been done. And I don'tgamble, but I win in the beating
shop and I don't. I don'twin away Plymouth too nil and three nil
happy days. I picked up aload of money and I don't. I
don't gamble, but you get agut food and then you're right, you
know, if somebody's away games,I wouldn't be at all surprised if we
went away and got one. Neilat Lester or something stupid like that.
Because this league, as I keepon saying, everybody can beat everybody.
(26:33):
The top teams will carry on likeyour burnles, they just plow through.
They don't often lose many Lester willprobably be like that. But I think
everybody else, you know, WestBrom last night turned it twich over.
You know, everybody can beat everybody. So it would surprise me our away
form could be better than a homefulas we said earlier. Yeah, I
said I was going to say earlier, but I completely forgot. You've just
(26:56):
reminded me we could. We've obviouslylost the commentary free nil. We've a
bit less for three in a fewweeks. Like that's how mad this league
is, right, Well, ifyou look at Leeds the other night.
Sorry, I was just going tosay, look at Leeds the other night,
Robham, you you know it feelsnot a betting man. But if
he was betting and you spoke tothe field before the game, it's a
(27:17):
you know, the way Leeds playedat Millwall, They're gonna walk there,
they must do Robert straggling and allit. But in the finish they was
lucky to get the well get apoint. They could have quite easily lost
the game. So it is astrange old league, but that was what
makes you so good. We'll takea quick break there and hear from our
sponsors, Dean Wilson Family Funeral Directorsfrom your Your funeral directors are famed for
(27:47):
caring for Millill families. Where areyou located and how far afield if you
travel to accommodate the needs foot offamilies. Well, we've got two branches
and the main ones in Elton inWelhall Road and we've got another one in
locks Bow which is near Orpington.Me all fans all around us. We
cover all areas and we do travelfor families. We had a lady very
(28:07):
recently that passed away up north butit was a wish to come back to
South London for a funeral, sothat's what we did. We went out
to Sheffield and we brought it back. We quite often carry out funerals to
me all families all over South Londonand Kent right down to the south coast.
Dean Wilson Independent Family Funeral Directors Karenfor mill Will families no matter how
near or far, should you needthem at any time, bring to eight
(28:33):
three to three one one one oneone. That's eight three to three one
one one one one. I'm yourhost, Myrs Thornton and with me I
have the No One Likes Us Talkingmonthly show team of Ted Robinson and Phil
Coleman. Many thanks to Dean Wilsonfor sponsoring our monthly show. Well we've
(28:55):
just spoken about jo Edward was comingin as our head coach and as and
of course change in that aspect comeswith a change in the style of plays.
Edwards kicked off his tenure with anemphatic Fornil win away to Sheffle Wednesday,
but his first game at the Denwasn't so nice as Millell lost three
Neil at home to Coventry and asPhil said earlier, sounds a booze.
(29:15):
What do you think, Phil?A great start away Sheffield Fornil and then
you come back down the world andthat's typical of this league. As we
just spoke about, going for moreposition takes time and we're trying to play
higher up the pitch. But forme, the commentary game that opened up
(29:36):
opened us up for counter attacks andit wasn't good watching on Sunday morning when
I'm seeing commentary players just sprinting tools, our back for and our back four
hastily retreating to the edge of thearea, and we're conceding. And but
what disappointed me? I think I'lllistened to Joe's comments the other day.
There are certain non negotiables in football. When I say that, I mean
(29:57):
footballers have to work damn hard. You work hard off the ball, you
work hard defending. You've got amark type. You've got to get to
the knockdowns. And I just feltwe didn't do some of that stuff on
Saturday. Now they're easy remedied. This is not about possession football and creating
chances, which is the toughest thingin football. You know, creating and
(30:19):
scoring chances is the most toughest thingin football. That's why you spend on
hundred million pounds on strikers and more. But you need to get the knockdowns.
You need to defend from a corner, you need to stop a counter
attack, even if it means youpulled a fellow back on the halfway line
and take a yellow card. Somebodyhas to go and close the shot down.
(30:41):
And I didn't see any of this, so I've got an impression that
this team was trying to play football, trying to implement what the manager was
but we've perhaps forgot some of thebasics. And I saw Correntry attacking,
speedy strikers running at our back guysand a third goal. I mean,
just take a look at the corner. You know, the guy gets across
Cooper at the near post. Theyall miss it and it's a tap in
(31:03):
because we weren't alive to the secondone. The first one's near post goes
to the tap in. You know, Bart makes a save. We didn't
get the knockdown, you know, the rebound. So certain things we have
to tighten up on whilst trying toplay the possession and create the chances.
So I think it was a bitof a loose game in defense. But
(31:25):
as I say, sixty your positionattack a couple of chances, which another
day you need to take your chances. If you only know Brian Clough was
a legend in the game. Weneed to keep a clean sheet and if
we score one, we win onenil and necessarily won the European Cup.
That's Arealy won the league. We'veunfantcyed not in the forest back in those
days, and I think sometimes youjust have to have a solid base,
(31:48):
keep it tight. This is whatwe do when we defend in this is
how we stop counter attacks, andthis is how we try to play and
create. And there's a bit ofa for me commentum was a bit of
a mismash trying to but we alsogo away some slottly goals, particularly from
that corner. I don't a lotof seeing corners go in. They can
be defended better than that. Sodisappointing, but you win one, you
lose one, and I just praythat the fans just are placent and keep
(32:12):
supporting him as this transition takes place. I can only hope with Millwall fans
ted anything to admit, Yeah, well, I mean films one hundred percent
right and what you're saying there,But the style of play on Saturday,
I mean I was again walking outthe ground and the guy said to me,
do you know what that game thatthey could have been six or five
either way, because we did havea few chances. You know, when
(32:32):
George Honeyman and the bar come postthat it was Neil Neil, you know,
if that goes in, the gamemight have been completely different. It
might have been us that was winning. Free Neil but there was chances sort
of. I totally agree with Peelabout us looking too open, but I
think I think we looked open withthe setup that we've got before Joe Edwards
(32:54):
came in. So I personally wouldlike us to go back to back free
because I think we haven't got thedefenders to play with a back too,
because it like in the center ofour positions. I mean, because they
tend to be a bit wide andit seemed to me like there was a
man for man marking thing going on. But we are a bit vulnerable of
(33:16):
anything that goes over the top ofus, and were tending to play with
quite a high line as well onSaturday. I just think the players that
we've got, we're better suited tohaving a back free if that means Leonard
comes in or Hutchinson comes in tomake a back free, or he moves
(33:37):
Murray Wallace in closer. You've gotlongman and you've got Norton Cuffey that can
play as wing backs. I justthink we would be as Field was saying,
we need to be a bit moresolid, and I think we would
be if we was playing that way, and I think we would have a
stronger base to play the type offootball that Joe Edwards wants to play with
(33:57):
it like that. Again, it'sup to Joe Edwards to decide how he
wants to play, if he wantsto stick with it the way it is,
But I think he sticks with theway that we've been playing in the
first two games. We continue togo along the stretch where we've won for
Neil one week and we've lost freeNeil the next because it's a very open
(34:20):
style of play that I can seethat he's bringing to the team. So
yeah, I totally agree with whatPhil was saying because Brian Cluff's the greatest
manager that has ever been in myeyes, and he knew how to win
football matches and that's what it's about. It's about winning football matches, not
about looking pretty or keeping hold ofthe ball, and that it's about winning
(34:42):
and the possession has to have apurpose to it, and that purpose is
to score a goal. And I'mall for it. I'm all for knocking
the ball around, but I dothink with the players that we've got,
unless he changes in some way orthe other, we bring players in in
January, and I would think personallybe better off going to a back three
and having wingbacks to play this styleof football. I think we'd be a
(35:07):
bit lot more solid if we've donethat, But it's up to Joe and
we see what happens. We couldgo to Ripswich and it could be free
nilk with us playing in the sameway that he's played on Saturday. But
I like to see open attack infootball. But if we do do that
and play the way we've been playing, there may will be a few defeats
(35:27):
along the way. Mentioned something wewere higher up the pitch. Well,
that lends itself to a counter attack. As I mentioned earlier, when your
defenders are watching your teammates knock itaround in the opposition's half, they've got
fifty yards behind them to the goalkeeper. And I'll tell you now, if
we're going to do that, teamsare going to exploit the space in behind
us, or they're going to counterattack and run our back back two three.
(35:52):
So we need a tactic not onlyto keep possession and score goals.
If you're going to play I wat'sTottenham the other day and they play a
highlight, Paul when they won thetitle played a high line because they're damn
quick center backs and you can knockit over the top and they've got their
first And I've played in back forswhere I played in one team where we
thought we would have quickly stacked forin the country and we were happy to
(36:14):
push them right out the pitch becausethey looked at him behind and we always
got there. Back in the day, you could pass it straight back to
the goalkeeper. But if you've gotdefenders that are not as quick and I
mean Wallace and Cooper House, I'mnaming it naming names, you might have
to change them. You might haveto have quicker defenders coming in, or
you have to have a tactic whichays, as soon as your position get the
ball, we close them down andkeep them pinning there off like some of
(36:35):
the other teams in the Premier Leaguedo always say let them have it and
we'll run back as fast as wecan. But if you get back to
the edge of your area as fastas you can, you better be tired
because they cannot break through the middle. You have to fall some wide,
you know. So I saw thedefenders were wide open and there were spaces
either side and straight through in themiddle. So you've got to have a
tactic on defending the counter attack. So that's I'm concerned about the place at
(37:00):
the back. It could be exploited. But we will see. We've spoke
a lot to night about time anda game time on the training ground and
changing the personnel that that will takestime, but we will see. We
will see on Saturday, Phil, your name names Murray Wallis. Now.
I like Murray Wallis. He's agood, solid defender, that's you know,
(37:21):
he will give you a game everytime he plays. But the guy
had him on toast on Saturday.Pace wise, he was he was done,
and I've not seen him look soexposed like that for quite some time,
and I do believe it was becauseof the way that we've been he
was being asked to play. SoI I think, you know, I'm
(37:42):
hoping that Joe Edwards is sitting therelooking at seeing that and working out what
he thinks is the best thing todo with these players that he's got,
what will suit them the best, and you know, because I think he
needs to do that at this timebecause he has got Gary Rad squad.
He has got a team that, like you quite rightly pointed out earlier,
Field has been ground with what GaryRout was expecting and to play that sort
(38:08):
of way, so to change it. And it is a change, and
you can see the change, andit is leaving us more exposed. It
will take time from to either getit or they're just not capable of getting
it, so again time will tellwith that. But I just feel and
I've always felt, and I didn'tunderstand when mill Will fans were moaning the
(38:30):
bat before saying it was defensive.Free center arms is not defensive if it's
played the right way, because you'vegot wing backs pushing on and you're literally
leaving free at the back, soit could be even more attacking in my
eyes. And I just think we'vegot players more suited to that formation.
But they didn't employ me, theyemployed Joe, so I'll leave it out
(38:50):
with Joe. Great point too, let's stay there. And here from my
a good friend of mine, HarveyBrown, talking about the Lions Food Hub.
