(00:00):
Nobodies are somebodies. Hey' is Chadvice, of course, And I was thinking
that if this whole podcast thing doesn'twork out for me, I have a
whole new idea. I think maybeI could do commercials. Just doing a
little bit of day dreaming here, hmmm, what commercials with me sound like?
(00:22):
Start your morning right with the greattaste of orange tang. Nothing will
start your day off right like thetaste of a good morning breakfast. And
remember, every growing boy needs sometang. Have you tried bush beans?
They're delightful, They're delectable, theytaste so great. That's savory, one
of a kind taste, because rememberthat everything tastes better with bush. Welcome
(00:44):
to chad Vice's brand new restaurants calledDix. Eat at Dix, remember to
get your fixed with that sweet, savory taste of dis a taste like no
other. You haven't eaten anywhere. If you haven't eaten Dix, maybe I'll
stick to podcasting. Here's my conversationwith Ray West, the New York City
rhythm machine known as spread Eagle, and we talk about his brand new project
(01:07):
called Superfly and the brand new singlethat was released recently, A cover of
the Casey and the Sunshine Bands songI'm Your Boogeyman. Going to play that
at the end of this show aswell. New music, brand new original
music coming from this project in Januaryof twenty twenty four, so don't you
miss it. My conversation with RayWest starts right now. Recording in progress.
(01:33):
All right. As you can see, I'm being joined this week by
the singer, the guy from theNew York City Rhythm Machine known as Spread
Eagle. It's the one and onlyRay West. Raymond, how are you,
brother? I'm good man. Sowe're doing the Sunglasses Edition, Yes
we are. That's going to bethe Ultra twenty twenty three winter edition on
(01:53):
the Northeast coast. Thank thanks,Ramul. This is very cool. Yeah,
for sure, Man. Are youyou in New York or are you
know? No? Today, I'min Florida. So I'm going back and
forth all the time between Brooklyn andwhere I am. Now, Okay,
that's where I thought I saw.I know you were in Brooklyn, the
house I know you're in. You'rein Florida for a bit too, so
I never know where you're at.You're all over the place, like you're
in Arizona. You travel all overthe country. Man. Yeah, you
(02:15):
know what's good is here? Thisis like a million dollar weather right now.
It's like the stuff you paid alot of money to come down here
for. So I'm just I couldjust sit tight here for a little bit.
I think I have to go toNew York City in a couple of
weeks, so I try to takeall this sunshineing with me. It's all
good. Yeah, it's a goodtime to do a good time to do
it. Let me talk a coupleof spread things with you, spread ego
(02:35):
things, and wean't jump into whatthe meat and potatoes that we're here to
talk about. You just got backfrom the UK. You did a tourist
pretty go in the UK. Isthat correct? Yeah? Man, we
well we did Europe and the UKand it's about three solid weeks. I
think it was first supposed to belike, you know, one of those
things you just go for like tendays, and then it turned into like
packing more dates on. So itwas a real It was a really uh
(03:00):
at this point in my life,I think it was one of the coolest
things I've ever been a part of. You know, you never because you
never know if you're going to getto do it again, you know.
So luckily for us we did goover and every place that we hit pretty
much will probably go back to againin September. So every year, you
know, we'll try to get backthere. You know. It's it's really
I'd like to go over for monthsat a time because it's just such a
(03:21):
really it's an awakening, you know, it's a different appreciation. It's a
different appreciation for rock and roll.I was telling someone else, you can
meet someone who's eighty years old thatworks like in a doughnut shop or something
over there, and they will theywill give you a full on visitation on
metal. It's just the culture there, you know. I mean we met
somebody. It was this lady wewent to like a chicken place whatever,
(03:44):
she's like eighty years old or somethingriffing about Iron Maiden. You know,
we're like, it's a mind blower, man. It was really cool.
Yeah, it is cool. It'sit's so ingrained in their in their society.
It's so ingrained in them too. They grow up in that. It's
it's such a great culture for that. It's amazing what you can do over
there. Which that's my question though, have you I didn't know Spread had
a falling over there is that thefirst time you guys went over as a
(04:04):
band. I didn't know how fardid you guys reach as far as Spread
music in England and Europe. Wewere slated back in the day when we
were signed by MC to go over, and it just some reason that fell
through whatever. So we did goin twenty seventeen, and I think we
might have talked about that last time. What we did. Oh yeah,
that's been a wild wow. Yeah, five or six shows. We did
(04:26):
two shows in the UK and therestaurant in Germany, and we kind of
got a feeling for people like theywere like saying things like, you know,
what took you so long? Youknow, we really liked this first.
We loved your first two albums, and then you know, I had
people tell me things like you're myband. You know everybody has that was
(04:46):
my high school band. So it'sa trip when someone from the UK or
Germany tells me that Spread was partof their life. Man. So absolutely,
this is the first time we everreally got to go and really put
in time. So in twenty seventeenlearned that we should go back. You
know, but when you go backand you know, you got you got
a plan. You got to hitrooms. You gotta do it correctly or
else you're gonna wind up playing fornobody obviously, so uh, it was
(05:10):
a real treatment. We went backand it was it was especially like in
South Wales places like that. Peopleare saying like, you know, we
you know, I love you,you know, we love your music bad
and we should have come here yearsago, and like we tried. You
know what, you gotta have promoters. You gotta have people to book at
tour. You gotta have people toback you. It's not it's not cheap
going over there too, with allthe bregsit and all the stuff too,
I mean the gas, the costsof it's a small country, but getting
(05:31):
around you gotta it's gonna make sensetoo. Yeah, and you learn real
quick about you know, the poundsof the dollar or the euro and then
your conversion rates when you spend moneythere. But I learned a lot.
But man, I would do itagain. I would. I'd like to
do it again until the wheels rolloff. Yeah, you know, because
it was really really cool. Uh, there's a great appreciation for what we
(05:55):
do there, and it's just mindblowing. It's very humbling, is what
it is. You know, that'sgood. That's good to hear. London
was London was crazy London? Yeah, yeah, did you have a big
turnout there? That's that's the majormecca for rock. I'm sure London.
Did you have a big turnout becausewe'd done I think we've done the it's
called the black Heart or something whatever. The venue that we played it was
(06:15):
packed, but it was it wasjust more like the appreciation, like to
walk on stage and you already feelthis great energy coming. It was just
this back and forth and it wasreally cool. Man Like London was the
big. London was the big youknow, to shoot the big load in
London. We really wanted to dowell in London. You know, that's
very very cool. I saw someomevideo of that too. You guys did
great. You sounded great. Ofcourse, I forgot how great of a
(06:38):
backup singer Rob is too is justsinging those harmonies, especially on Switchblade,
like just his voice. I forgotabout how much he brings to that sound
and just I saw it in thevideos I saw just it's it's incredible.
You guys were like firing on allcylinders. There. Yeah, and I
think from what happened to us too, is like anything else, repetition breeds,
you know, so a mastership things. You know, Like we got
(07:00):
to play like I think we didlike ten nights in a row or something
that eight or ten nights in arow. Wow. After three weeks,
we were like, it's so clicheto stay, but we were on fire.
You know. The band was fine, really on all cylinders. Rob's
singing beautifully, Ricky Ricky as well. You know, it was just Rick's
back there pounding a way like youguys are just like locked in. Of
course you guys have been playing withthis configuration for a while now too,
(07:21):
but still you guys just seem superlocked in. Yeah, and Ricky can
Ricky. The thing about Ricky isRocky sings while he's playing on these you
know, and he's got great onit. But everybody's working hard. We
got to do like we were inBells and for like three or four days,
like we did a gig and thenwe just had three days to chill,
you know. So those three dayswe got to do like vocal rehearsals
(07:42):
and do all that kind of stuffin there. You know, things that
most bands don't want to do everybodywants to go to drink, you know,
but we're rehearsal. I got toput in the work. If you
want to sound like it right, you got to do some people like you
said, we can talk about thatforever because this is for real. You
know, this isn't like you know, when you get inside the box,
you everybody he's videotaping everything. Youknow. My kind of vocals are like
(08:03):
they're really like it was some acrobaticstuff back in the day. So I'm
trying to repeat some things and justor just even get the zone. So
people have been really forgiving with alot of stuff and some stuff not you
know. So, uh, it'sa lot of work. It's a lot
of work. Man. Oh youstill do good on that, man.
I mean people got to manage theexpectations. It's what thirty five years ago
and yeah, like you're It's onething people don't realize as you're standing still
(08:24):
in a recording studio screaming and beltingthose songs out, and then when you're
on stage, you're moving around, you're getting into the vibe. You're not
gonna be able to hit those exactsame notes and why would you want to
You're there to just put on ashow too. It's not just about if
you want to stand in one placeand sing. You're into your heart's content,
your guts up, maybe you'll reachit. But it's a show.
You're gonna go out there and you'regonna move around. It's gonna be a
(08:46):
little bit different. They got toaccept that. They got to see that
it's a rock show. Yeah. And I've come to like really appreciate,
uh, the entertainmentness of what Ido and what we do, you know.
So I just know, you know, I know it's not going to
be by the numbers kind of gig. I'm really like I add lib a
lot, and I go off scripta lot, and I don't like to
repeat myself so it bores me toseeing the same melody over and over again.
(09:09):
So I have the freedom to addlibit and go off the rails a
little bit, you know, andit's it works. You know, we're
trying to be we're trying to entertainfolks and not trying to bore people to
death exactly. And you got it, you got it, you found it.
One last thing on spread. We'llmove on to some other stuff.
So do you have anything else comingup in twenty twenty four in the books
for shows? Are you just kindof staying off the road for a bit.
(09:31):
We're gonna chill, I think tillwe got two shows in December,
ones in New York City, onesin Jersey. So those are big ones
at Orleans in the city and itwas a deep Yeah, I love those
two. You have good history atArleans Grocery. Yeah, man, it's
just those those That little room hassome magical stuff that happens, you know,
just like London's the same kind ofa little room, lots of magic.
(09:54):
But we start up again heavy inFebruary because we want to come March.
Is this this maunch is a rockcruise thing that we got asked to
do this year. Next Oh you'reon it. You're on it least?
Okay, nice on the boat, dude, Okay, that's cool. I
got to get on that boat.I'm gonna miss it this year. Even
I was like, next year,Yeah, you've been playing a boat.
(10:16):
You're not sea sick, are you? I never I'm not doing to sound
you here. You don't want that, Like, I've never been on a
big boat. And you know,I'll watch like these things on YouTube,
like big boats and bad weather.Yeah, really mess with my head and
I just don't start watching it.Don't do it. You don't feel like
(10:39):
you're moving it all and it's gonnabe awesome. So whatever, I'll give
it a shot. Give it ashot. It's not like you're on a
like a dingy or anything. You'regonna be out there on a monster boat,
so it should be okay. Ithink just put your life jacket,
always think could be part of yourstage show. It's all good. You
got this to go life jacket exactly. The boy, the boy there,
the boy, yeah boy. Butthe main thing is, you know,
a couple gigs in December January, things have to I have another you know,
(11:03):
have some other stuff I'm working on, so I need that time and
then where it's time to suit upagain and really just hit it hard because
you want to be by the timewe get to the boat. You know,
well, why spraygill on the boat? Oh you know they're pretty good.
Why not? We want to reallybe like you know, in the
zone, you know, and belike we're like be like a machine that
is firing on all cylinders for realand you mentioned Rob, you know Rob's
(11:24):
vocals or he's really coming into hisown with that stuff. He works hard.
Those Freddy albums I do a lotof I did a lot of layering
and a lot of harmony work,so, you know, and he's got
to capture all that. Ricky's gotto capture all and now we have Jommy
doing you know, Johnny's Johnny's agreat singer too. Yeah, I noticed
that. It's very cool. That'sone of the second things I saw was
just the way Rob came in thereand obviously everyone else just came in and
(11:46):
did the backing, especially on asong like switch Play with the backing is
so important and just they just youknow, nailed it. I thought that
was really cool. Not just sayingthat because you're here in front of me,
but that was on points. It'sit's one of those songs you got
to you gotta sort of get reallyclose. Yeah, and everybody gets out
the cameras for that song. Theywant to record it. Of course,
here we go. I don't thinkabout that ship. They just tried to.
(12:07):
Let's think about this then, soyou hit me up. And also
a mutual friend of ours that Iknow, you know, way more than
I do. But Andrew Daily,he's a writer with the Guitar World and
gold Mine Magazine. You both hitme up almost around the same time.
Talk to me about a new projectthat you got going on. Excuse me,
which I'll let you set up.Of course, the name of it,
I'll let you say. But outsideof spurd Eagle Music. Of course,
(12:28):
you've done the All Points Wet West, the solo record, but this
is something completely different and new.I'm pretty fired up about it. Let's
talk about what you got going onright now. I've had you know,
when All Points West was doing itsthing, we had a catalog of songs
that I love, but I didnot give it the care that it needed
when I put out this music, you know, so these a lot of
(12:52):
the catalog just set around and Ijust didn't give it the chance that it
needed. So I'm having a conversationone day with Andrew, and I'm like,
I really want these songs, youknow, to go somewhere. You
know I got Maybe I'll start alabel. I'll find a label. He
goes, Listen, man, Iknow some guys that really dig this,
and I turned them on to youknow, and I'm like, Okay,
well you know why not lo andand behold? Man, he hooks me
(13:15):
up with Deco, with Bruce andCharlie. And you know, I didn't
really studying that well. I knowthe reputation is great, you know,
but to have someone take something thatthat I believe in, you know,
that's really close to my heart. It's really personal stuff because that these songs
are very autobiographical. This is notcalled hypothermy it's very autobiograph. Let's it's
(13:37):
hard to let that stuff go,you know. Anyway, they heard it
and they were like, we wantto help you. And man, you
know, I tried to do itby myself the first time. So to
have people around me come in andsay, listen, we can help you
do this. We like this music. Rad we're gonna we're going to make
this. So let's I wanted torebrand all points West. I wanted's forget
(14:00):
about that, and that's going tobe called a demo anyway. The real
catalyst was a friend of mine,Tony Fourtuna, who does licensing work,
likes the songs a lot. Hesays, if you guys, you know,
can we remix these or something? So anyway, we got it under
a hair in our a bug,you know, hair bar ass to remix
everything, retracks, you know, retrack vocals, remixings, retune things and
(14:22):
make bring the songs into the now, you know. And I've always want
to have a band called Superfly.I just thought that was the coolest fucking
thing. And you know, yougo to the seventies super Fly, but
Superfly is more like it's not abouta pimp, you know, it's not.
It's got a lot of quality. It's very urban groove music. It's
just it's a vibe. Man.It's all about what happens when the music
(14:43):
goes out of the speakers and intoyour into your fucking into your domes.
Really cool feeling, and that's whatwe get. There's a lot of groove.
And I was like, what doI name this thing? I just
thought to call the band Superfly wasfucking cool as hell, man, So
the music matches the name Deco dugit. And I'm sure they were like,
(15:03):
we'll siblisize whatever. But now theyunderstand what I'm what I'm thinking.
So now we not only that,so now we have I got a manager
that is in play, and AdrianBiondo was a bad motherfucker. And so
she's known my writing partner, MiguelGonzalez for a long fucking time. We've
all been in friends for quite along time. But she never ever wanted
(15:24):
to put you know, I hadthe never put her name on anything,
you know. So it's a bigdeal for me to have her on board
and have Miguel writing and mixing andproducing like he does. He's I couldn't
ask for a better writing partner forthis music. You know, without him,
it doesn't even exist. So andDeco is going to put it out.
So we did. We recorded ayou know, we recorded Boogeyman,
(15:46):
I'm your boogieman. Yeah, nowlet me ask you then we can cut
this out. It's not true.But is that a cover of k C?
Or is that original? That's acover? Man, that's a cover.
I thought, well, you knowwhat, you know why, I
don't exactly know because it sounds sodifferent. It's so good, but it's
got that it's got that know groove, it's got that funky, that that
flavor to it, that's seventies vibe. But it's yeah, exactly bo But
then you take it to another level, which is what you want to do
(16:07):
with a cover, and that's whyI'm pretty sure that's the cover. Don't
want to say it is in caseit's an insult. No man, that's
original, but no, no,I figured that's that's I love it.
Yeah, that's me putting that songthrough the superfly machine. Yeah it comes
out. You know. That's allabout Miguel, my my my better half.
And and this is you know,my partner is Miguel, and he's
just he's just you know, someguys are just fucking great. Man in
(16:32):
the studio, Miggie can hear somethingor take something I'm saying, and he'll
just make it happen, you know. He's he's the guy that does the
magic and and and puts his handson the knobs and do that. You
know, I'm the clown of themicrophone. That's it, you know.
But he Uh, we were like, how do we make that song interesting
because it's the same groove of thewhole song? Yeah you're boog man,
(16:53):
you're a boogy man, which isgreat, but it's the same rhythmmea yeah,
the same beat, the same flow. Yeah. First it was like,
you know, should we even coverit? Should we look and should
we bother bother looking for something else. But we were like being a little
bit stubborn and we we Mguel playedme the track and he goes, I
think I think I got it.What do you think? I'm like,
Oh, you know, I putI put up the mic, I sang
(17:14):
the vocals in my kitchen. Iknow I got I don't want to wait
till that's where some of the bestones come there in the bathroom, right
man. Yeah, So it's it'snot only cool that it came out of
it came out cool. Yeah, not for like, you know, the
label to be like, let's putit out, you know, just as
(17:36):
put up for Halloween. So Ithought that was cool. So to have
that team working with me to makethis happen is a big deal for me.
You know, everybody's we have thisconversation. Everybody in the world is
making music and how do you getpeople's attention, how to get people to
listen to it? You know,so you need you need, you need,
need, catch need something, especiallywhen you've got a brand new pride,
(18:00):
Like if you came out with thebrand new spurad Ego record that has
a built in fan base. Butthis is a name that no one's heard
of it's a it's a it's acover song, but it's it's got a
bunch of unique graphics, it's gota it's got a logo to it,
but what is it? People don'trecognize it until they actually bother to listen
to it. But everyone else hassomething they want you to listen to.
How do you put in the forefront? Yeah? Man, that's what the
hard part is, right so youknow, you got to just make a
(18:22):
little noise. So right now,it's just a little single we put out,
you know, as we put outmore, you know. Well,
I think it's another single next month, and then we'll put up the physical
record in January. I was gonnaask if there's gonna be a physical record.
I'm glad to hear that it's gonnabe on CD, vinyl, cassette.
I'm not sure I want like Ialways ask that. I don't know.
(18:44):
That cracks me up because that's moreof a souvenir for some people.
But I would like to do vinyl. I'm sure we'll see how the guys
want to go with that. Atthe label, everybody has a plan.
I'm not going to bitch about anythingbecause I'm happy just to be here.
You know, we do have somecool idea for graphics, as you saw
beating the supervised stuff into AI andall that stuff. It's really cool what
you can come up with, youknow. But is that you sitting in
(19:06):
with the mask and the like atthe chair. That's not you? And
like there's another guy that's on thefront of the of the logo, but
there's a guy sitting in the chairwith the mask on. Is that you?
No, that's just something we created, Okay, but it's it's it's
from a picture of me, butyou feed it into this thing and it
creates this cool ship. Okay, well nice like AI. Okay, yeah,
I got you very cool, veryvisual. Yeah. From that,
(19:30):
it makes me have ideas where I'mlike, oh, I want to wear
something like that. Yeah. Soit's it's it's all, it's it goes
back and forth. But it's thething what's happening is I'm not just creating
by myself. There's other people aroundme and and super creative people around me,
and that's that's the beauty of this. So that's why you know,
this is this is family's spreads ofmy family. This is my heart,
(19:51):
this is my this is my mysoul, you know exactly. Yeah,
you have this other creative outlet whichcan only do it can only do good
things for you, right because itgets other musical expressions out of you which
maybe you couldn't do anywhere else.So this is is great to have this,
you know, this outlet for youto kind of put music out that's
you're hearing in your head that youwant to get out there, right because
(20:12):
everybody wants you know, everybody wantsto have some level of like this is
me and themselves, and it's ifyou know you have it in your head,
if you have the tools to doit, why not do that?
You know, I'm not going tobe a one tree pony. I'm not
just a hard rock singer. Ilove you know, I've told you I
love soul music. I love allthat stuff, and I love the groove.
You know, growing up here inFort Lauderdale, Miami and New York
(20:34):
City, all you get is groove, a lot of urban groove. Man.
You know, when it was popping, Casey was Casey is fucking brilliant.
I love all that music, man. I know I was gonna when
I heard it was when I whenI realized it was a Casey cover.
It brought me back to a videowe talked about before. When you're out
a live, you're at a showthere was a cover band playing boogie Shoes,
and you were like groove into themusic there, like boogie Shoes,
(20:56):
my boogie boogies. So when thatwas a case cover, I thought,
I see that ties in you're yourlove for Casey as well pronounced here just
a big grooves. I love it, man, I'm all. You know
when when when a cool beach songcomes on, I turn you know,
I'm that guy. Man, I'mnot. I'm not a musical bigot.
I love the groove, music, snobby, like all kinds of stuff.
(21:17):
You're not afraid to show it toword on your sleeve card was a hard
ass metal kid. No, it'smetal, bro, I'm gonna take your
metal card. Your metal card?Am I doing? Grow up? Exactly?
Yeah, It's like, let's appreciateall the stuff, you know.
So I know, here's my thing, the people that I have to believe
(21:37):
in this so much. I believeit's going to connect with people, because
if you can't sell for yourself,if you don't believe in it, why
should anybody else? Man, andthat's what's driving me with this stuff.
So Superfly isn't just you know, some some guys in suitors. Super Light
is a vibe they're creating for peoplearound us to appreciate. You know,
everybody's going to be superflied once theylisten to this. You feel what I'm
saying. Yeah, absolutely, Ifelt good about it too. I can't
move, I can't sing, Ican't, but man, I tried so
(22:00):
hard when I heard that, Igot the groove going, so everybody else.
Yeah, So I'm very grateful toDeco and and Ruce all those guys
and their team and and and nowmy team that's that's working to put this
together. And we're being very patient, you know, because I got to
sit on my heels, you know, another month and in January. But
I know we're going to you know, do or create content, not bullshit
(22:22):
content. You know what This isgonna be a real band, and it's
got real hard, real soul, you know. And the lyrics are special.
If they're not Shakespeare, you know, but they're they're to me,
they're special, you know what Imean. Yeah, it's going to touch
people, and that's what it's allabout. Yeah, I mean I this
is the record, and he's writingthat those songs got me through my my,
(22:44):
my, the hard part of mydrug addiction. So you know,
it was a good outlet for me. I'm not I'm not afraid. I'm
not going to just put it awayand never look at it again. Ship.
Let me ask you something about Andrewagain, going back to the start
when you were working on some ofthese things. Did you just hanging out
with him and you just kind ofshowed him what you were working on and
he said, we really need todo something with this. Did you have
any idea he wanted to or hadan idea he could do something with it,
(23:06):
or were you just like how farin the stages of writing, or
did you have music that he wasthere that he saw stuff I was doing.
Yeah, I was in New YorkCity in Orleans or something. We
were hanging out one night and Ihad him listened to my in the headphones.
I said, listen to what doyou think? He's like, dude,
this that's cool, man, Whatare you gonna do with it?
You know we have more like Yeah, and so Andrews just at that piece,
(23:30):
man, like he was the guythat connected me. That was the
original stuff too, not I'm yourbrogie man at that was the original stuff
that you wrote that you were workingon. Yeah, he was just like,
I get this. You know. The thing with Andrew, he like,
you guys know so many people, you wrap up so many people.
But for you guys to take thetime and talk to me and even outside
of this, to be my friend, and you know we text and all
(23:52):
that shit, you know, SoAndrew for him to put his name behind
this too is special for me becauseyou know, he's a good he is
and he felt so like I know, we talk him and I obviously talk
and he was just like, youknow, I feel really proud of this
Ray, and I you know,I really want to help him do this.
I really want him to put thisout and I really want to do
anything I can in my power. That really came through. And him and
I were talking about it too,a little behind the scenes action here,
(24:14):
but I felt his passion for it. Obviously, I felt your passion for
it. So I'm just like,I gotta got to talk to you guys
about this. I got to talkto you obviously about this and get it
out there any way I can.So I'm happy to do it. Yeah,
man, you know, it's it'sa team that we build it as
many ways as we can. Yeah, we put you in there, We
get Andrew involved, you know, and then there's the people writing the music,
and it's the team around that thatwe start branching out. You know,
(24:37):
what we're doing is very difficult. It's hard to get people to pay
attention to something that did it andnew. You know, people so much
stuff out there. It's like peoplewho listen to our let's say our style
of music, let's say from thelate eighties, nineties, seventies, whatever,
it's like they stopped listening in ninetyfive to new music. It was
like, Okay, that's it.I'll hear what I heard the radios.
(25:00):
I'll give me back to the seventies. Give me your Boston, give me
your Foreigner, give me you knoweverything, give me your Motley Crew,
give me whatever I'm done. Idon't care if they make new music.
I don't care if new music comesout that sounds like them, I don't
want to know about it. It'slike that's the majority, and that's that's
sad. And with the Internet beingout there, it seems like it's so
much easier. Now you can justgo out there and like, what's this?
But I can't tell you how manytimes I listened to a radio podcast
(25:22):
that's in New York, carreer EddieTrunk. He has callers calling in all
the time. People say like,Oh, what's going on with this band?
What's going on with that band?I don't know? Type it in
your Google machine and fucking find it, like I don't know what's going on?
Yeah? Well, I think youknow, people have been priced out
of music, you know, inbands live, you know, paying like
(25:44):
you know, a thousand months togo see a band or yeah's spear if
some people maybe were into the music, they had their kids, Yeah,
lives change, priorities change. Iget that. Yeah, and now they
got maybe time to get back intolife and appreciate music. Some people have
kept music and their life since thebeginning. If you've got music in your
(26:07):
life, you're going to kind ofstill you're those people that go to the
go to the clubs and go tothe venues. You know. But there's
some people just stepped out of it. They didn't go back in. You
know, music is a part ofour lives. Man. Without music,
life would just be a mistake, feel me. So some people just I
don't know, man, I thinkno matter how old you get, music
(26:29):
is a part of your life.It keeps you. It's what makes you
youthful. Absolutely, you know,so somebody, you know, I don't
get people stepping out of it ornot seeing what's new, or you know,
you have to be Metallica to getpeople in the building, or you
too got to be like have alot of ye same game right now.
It's a fame game. You know. People are famous. People that have
that kind of equity you know, are out there, are can fill room.
(26:53):
But the bands that are on thelower Aslomy never really broke through if
you didn't have that big Yeah, even people that have hits, like who
had some hits back in the day, were on Billboard chart like some of
them can't even really feel more thana few theaters or small or big or
large clubs like a hard rock likeI mean a band like Warrant that had
what two to three hits on theradio, they're still playing as far as
I know, club's large or theaterslike they're not. You just it takes
(27:17):
more than that. I don't knowwhat it is, but it just seems
like unless you're like a Metallica oreven like a deaf Leopard, you're just
not getting there for some reason.I don't know what it is. It's
like two or three bands I canhandle in my head, that's all people
want to see, and that's it. They can't handle anything Moore. And
the cool thing that is doing islike they took out Greta band Fleet and
bands, like they're taking all thebands, which is cool. Yeah,
you know, they will take outsome cool bands, right, I mean
(27:38):
Metallica has become like you know, they're just like that's the bar, you
know, and the rest of usjust trying to do what you can't.
I just want to get make Iwant to make music and just have it
be heard and connect with people onit, you know. So, but
it is, this is a famegame. Everybody is I you know.
I know bands that just are tryingto buy their way into this game.
(28:00):
Yeah, and buy onto shows bythe tours and make really great videos,
but there's no one there. There'sno one. Yeah, you can make
the greatest feel in the world, but if nobody sees it, well,
there's no one to do with it, exactly. Yeah, Mak your mom,
you know what I mean. It'slike that's you know, you have
to see two comments has been that'sa great video and we're playing here and
this, you know, two commentsexactly like wow, real cool or this
(28:23):
sucks. I think the people thatare chasing it because they want to be
famous are going to have a hardtime just because you just really want to
make music and connect. You're justgoing to keep pushing it and do that
and that'll work, you know whatI mean. I'm not in this money
left a long time ago, yeahright, that big record contract, that
(28:47):
fat mc a contract left a longtime ago, watermill deal anymore. We
don't do that. That business isthat doesn't exist anymore. Exactly. It
Rob says, we're in the lovetouring business, you know. So that's
that's where we're at. So that'swhy it spreads back on the boat,
you know, on the boat thingslike that. So we're going to make
that push and get the optics onthat band. That's that's going to be
(29:08):
interesting to see what happens. Youknow, it's going to be good.
Still working that record of course too. Subway to the Stars, which people
shouldn't forget about it. If youhave it's out there. Go get it.
It's on Frontiers Music. Go getthat. That's Subway to the Stars
twenty nineteen. First time I talkedto you boys was back then, and
that's been so long ago, butit was a great record. It still
is and it's it's it translates welllive, so it works. I see
(29:29):
people's faces and we play it live. We don't hold back. We're not
the kind of band that like itsplay two new songs and that's it.
You know, we open up what'ssome Way to the Stars. So we
believe in it. Yeah, Ibelieve if you've never heard the song before,
you're going to learn to like it. Yeah, it'll grow on you.
Think. You train grow in yourbrain. You train, you kind
of train these exactly appreciate it andthen that that starts to do it,
(29:52):
to do its thing. You know, you can't force it on people.
You can't force it on people.Yeah, if you believe in it comes
across live, if you can sellit back to them. I even say,
you know, this belongs with backon the Bitch. This, this
belongs with Scratch like a Cat.This is part of the seller. This
is what we should put in here. This belongs with Rhythm Machine. This
should be in the set. Ifyou put it alongside those other songs,
people know they're gonna be like,Okay, this this, this is a
(30:14):
full spready goal show. This hasthis song, this song, that that
song, and if you believe init, they will too. I would
imagine, and just just like goingback and doing a cover. Let's you
know, let's talk about that fora second. Yea. The philosophy for
me to do a cover is sothat the people who really don't know the
music connect to something. Yeah, and then that they're like, oh,
I know that song is a familiarityof it. And then they come back
(30:34):
and they're like, oh, it'sa different take on that. If you
build that kind of kind of vibewith it, you know. So it's
it's it's interesting to come from thatangle on it. But you know,
and going back to super Fly,it's going to be a live band.
It's so and I know these songstranslate really well live because when I was
doing APW I Hate It Hard,I was like, this song is fucking
(30:55):
groove hard man. So I'm excitedto do both. No, it's gonna
be great. Do you have acouple more questions while at this time doesn't
run out here you can see itprobably a counter coming down. I want
to make sure super Fly gets alot of it. Yeah, well,
I want to make sure super Flygets a lot of attention. So,
speaking of the live shows, doyou have a live I know it's to
you and Miguel, but do youhave a live band already flashed out?
Are you still working out the otherparts of that as far as when you
(31:17):
go when you're going to do shows. We have a live band. I
don't know if it's going to betwo guitars or one. I'm happy with
just being one. So, youknow, but we got guys because we
need to start making some videos. So I think we'll probably get into that
work in January, you know, just sort of coincide with the record because
people want some sort of content. So what I'll do is whatever needs to
(31:37):
be done between now and then.I think the lyric videos are very important,
yeah, without boring people to death. That's why we have those cool
images on on the lyric video.I saw a comment on YouTube somebody said,
uh, it's really it was sirely. Oh why are so many people
making I want to see your videoas all slides. I said, this
is a lyric video. So nexttime you know we're looking for a live
(32:00):
video, this is a lyric video. It'll come. You know, people
put that. I know people areexpecting this. People are expecting MTV videos
that they're going to still see onthe on YouTube. It doesn't work like
that anymore. It's quick, man. You got to hook people. Quick
video got five or ten seconds tocatch someone's attention, and that's it,
especially if you're you're on the Iassume the songs on the streaming service to
(32:21):
Spotify, right, people got tolook and they can stream. They get
five seconds with it and they decideif they like it or not. Yeah,
that's the world we live in.Brother, Yeah, yeah, exactly.
So the like we're talking about,it's on YouTube. People can check
out the video for I'm Your Boogeyman. You have a new single coming out.
This is being recorded in November. It's dropping next month December. Original
single, the next single should I'mhoping next month that the physical records supposed
(32:45):
to be January. I don't thinkI'm lying. If anything changes, I'll
update you. Yeah, but youknow the world we live in, things
change all the time, so absolutelymyself say it and I go, I
hope it's going to happen. Yeah, for sure. People go on YouTube,
give that your support. Check itout. There's a lyric video,
there's the actual song itself too. There's videos coming as well, and it's
(33:06):
on Deco Entertainment. Physical release coming. People can check that out in January
and then live shows to be announced. It's gonna be a big twenty twenty
four for way between Spread and superFlyer. Is your voice gonna hold that?
Man? How's your voice doing?I'll ask you that. You know,
when we first talked, I wasin this whole crisis of confidence thing.
So now I feel like I cansing anything. It's just so funny
(33:27):
how time just said this thing. And working on the craft and getting back
in touch with my voice and thecenter of it. I feel great.
No, we did like eight eightshows in a row. People like,
great, you do eight chosen ina row. That's tough. If you
mentioned eight or ten in the Ukana, I thought, oh man, that's
rough. At the You know,in anybody's voice at any age, that's
a lot. That's amazing. Yeah, but you know how to take care
(33:50):
of it this at this time inyour life, though, I would assume.
Yeah, I learned that. Andthe trick is, and it's hard.
You gotta be quiet all day gonnabe quiet. I'm I'm a chatty
patty bro. I talk about millionsan hour, I know, and I
fire a lot and it's hard tobe quiet. So, you know,
you after after the gig, yougo to the merch table and people coming
(34:13):
up and you're just like, wedon't want to seem like an asshole too,
like, hey, hey, hey, hey Ray, Ray, Ray,
how's it going. Brother? You'rejust like like, I really can't
talk righty, but y'all sign it? Yeah, Ray, he's such an
asshole. It doesn't even talk.He just signs and pushes away. What
do you think he is? Nick? Can you like you know what?
We'll get to me. What Ilearned a lot too from this was if
(34:36):
someone is taking the time to comeup to me, man, I owe
them whatever they want. Appreciation.Yeah, just say hey, thank you
for supporting, thank you for comingout and supporting live, real live,
one hundred percent live music. AndI haven't I haven't had this is my
real voice out there. Thank youfor supporting it. Yeah, you know
it really makes you think. SoI do people, it's never bother.
(35:00):
Even if I'm feeling tired and shitty, it's never bothered. It's somewhat too
good time to come up to becausethey appreciate what I do. That's a
fucking mind blower. Yeah, it'sa mind blower. Man. I remember
the first time an autograph in mylife, back when I was a kid.
I was in New York City walkingthrough Manhattan. These two girls man
across the street like our picture wasin a magazine or something that was like,
(35:21):
oh I felt really, I feltten feet tall that day. You
know what I mean? For surethat that never changes, even even I'm
happy when anyone comes up in itand says something positive other compared to one
they're saying bad ship. Yeah, then you don't have time for them.
I get it. Yeah, Idon't want to hear that. If you
want to talk to you, makesure it's all good. If you if
you got something bad to say, don't don't bother, don't want to hear
you. I'm gonna uh, I'mgonna let you go on this one.
(35:45):
It takes I gotta wait for eightminutes to redo the whole to do another
session you got to uh to chillout and then come back and we'll do
a quick run through of the ParabiCity Show. I'm gonna act like an
idiot through that. It's gonna begreat. I love it too. You've
been listening to the No Are Somebody'spodcast with me Chadvice, and this podcast
has been voted the number one podcastby people that don't vote.
