Ha recibido numerosos premios, entre los que destacan el Wolf de Física, la Medalla Max-Planck, el Príncipe de Asturias, el BBVA Fronteras del Conocimiento, o la Medalla Benjamin Franklin. Es un experto en computación cuántica y sus aplicaciones en el campo de la información. Investiga, además, la comunicación cuántica y las redes de tensores. Según sus teorías, el ordenador cuántico revolucionará el mundo de la información, y será posible asimismo una comunicación más eficaz y una mayor seguridad en el tratamiento y transmisión de datos.
