Héctor Vives es doctor en física por la Universidad de Valencia, donde también se graduó en física y realizó un máster en física avanzada. En su doctorado estudió lentes gravitacionales para investigar la estructura del disco de acreción de cuásares y la distribución de materia oscura en galaxias, y sigue colaborando en la investigación de sistemas de este tipo con un grupo de la Universidad de Manchester.
Ha sido investigador postdoctoral en el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, donde estudió el núcleo de una galaxia activa cercana con espectroscopía de campo integral en infrarrojo y ondas sub-milimétricas, y actualmente trabaja en el Centro de Astrobiología, simulando observaciones de galaxias activas con el instrumento de infrarrojo medio a bordo del Telescopio Espacial James Webb. Sus intereses también incluyen la divulgación científica, que realiza en blogs y redes sociales bajo el pseudónimo DarkSapiens; presentó en 2016 el programa de radio El Café Cuántico, ganador de un Prisma de Bronce; ha dado diversas charlas y conferencias sobre astrofísica; y colabora en varios podcasts como Enciérrate con la Ciencia y Coffee Break: Señal y Ruido.
