name is Clint Knights and I'm JacobPort. The season is rolling right along
here in March. I think thisis our fourth episode this year. Third
I don't even know. I'm notkeeping that right, but we are rapidly
approaching race season here in Ohio,just less than two weeks away actually from

kicking it off here. Florida isdone borrowing our sprint cards for a while.
I think some of them are headof the Texas for a little bit,
and it won't be long before wesee at least our own on the
track here, and then we'll getsome of the circuits here late in March.
I think some of the touring touringdrive nine days until Attica nine days,

nine day. Wait. We're goingto keep our fingers crossed that that
happens and weather allows listen if itstays the way it has been for the
last couple of days. Today wasnot the most pleasant, but man,
we had sixty five degrees on Monday. It was pretty crazy. I'm hoping.
I'm looking at the long term forecastand I think we got a shot.
I think we do. I thinkit'll be nice. Speaking of road

I got I got two one oneteenage girl and one real close she
thinks she's like twenty and and uh, I don't think it ever works with

that. I keep coming back andtrying to figure out how to be a
dad and they throw me a differentcurveball every dam day. I can I
can relate. I've got a teenagerand one that's about to be a teenager,
and then two more behind that.So it is, uh, it
is definitely a different different world everyday. Yeah, that's that's awful.

she she knows I tolt her tobe good. So I'll probably get
some macked up inside the head assoon as I shut this thing off.
Awesome. Well, but now thatyou mentioned that, I I have seen
pictures where you guys are all onthe road together. I mean, we

all know you've you've been burning upthe road for years now, and I've
seen, you know, pictures andstories where you guys have traveled together over
the last few years. What's that? What's that been like? Uh?
And do they come out for runs? You know? How does how does
the summer go for that for thefamily? Well, I mean there for

(03:36):
I mean for most of their earlyyears, we we kind of homeschooled and
and did that route, and sothey were on the road one hundred percent
of the time. And as they'vegotten older, you know, to be
fair to my family like, andthey're back in regular school and into sports,
and so the sports that they dois you know, volleyball and basketball,

(03:57):
which is pretty much the opposite ofrace season. And so, you
know, a little late in theyear and obviously early in the year,
we kind of trimmed our travel backso I can support them. I mean,
they they have sacrificed so much forme to get it do what I
love. You know. The problemis now as we've been home for so

(04:18):
long and basketball season's over and theyare used to traveling, they are used
to seeing their racing friends and theirpeople. They've been on me pretty hard
here lately, which gets me evenmore excited, you know, just because
you know, you meet so manygreat people, and you know, race
is just it's just badass. Imean, you know, I've done it

(04:40):
for since I was fifteen and I'mforty eight, and I still love it
and you know it just have mykids enjoying it and wanted to be a
part of it. It's pretty specialfor me. Where can we expect to
see it here? Once you getyour season started? Well, you know,
first off, you know, I'mvery very thankful to still be doing

(05:04):
this, and you know, Iwant to give a shout out to Hercules
Tire or High Logistics and DNC Hydraulics, which are my key partners that have
obviously helped us keep going. Anduh, with that being said, it's
been a long winter. We hadto rebuild trucks and trailers and and we
moved houses and and I just probablybeen off a little more than I could

chew and probably pretty much put myfamily in a roundabout way through hell as
far as that went. You know, But we're we're things are really the
last couple of weeks have really startedto come together. The original game plan
was to head south and do somethree sixty racing one just kind of to
get away and to knock the rustoff a little bit. But the way

(05:50):
it's looking up, we'll probably,you know, if we can get ready,
we'll be at Attica next week.I I know nobody wants to hear
this, but for my sake,if we lost one week due to weather,
I wouldn't wouldn't mind so much.But you know, it's all going
to depend. I'm waiting on someparts to get in. I got a
little behind on the race car sideof things, and you know, once

(06:13):
once some of that stuff gets here, it's it's really going to kind of
dictate if we're going to go nextweek or the week after, but stick
around home for a few weeks andthen the girls haven't been pulled out of
school and they're ready to rip.So I think first part of April we'll
be going racing, doing some outlawstuff and maybe fifty five and then the

Paduca weekend and then obviously things starthappening around everywhere. But obviously a lot
of that it's going to be dictatedoff of what the weather does. I'm
been fortunate this this year with somethings that have changed that I gotta I
get a kind of pick and shoose, pick and choose a little more of

what we want to do. Sothat kind of helps to say. So
once uh, once you kind ofget that season going, is it like
you said, it's going to be, you know, more pick and shoes.
You know, how far out areyou gonna go? Or is it
this gonna be kind of wherever thewind blows you. Probably a little bit
of both, you know. Obviouslythe whole deal with the All Stars definitely

(07:24):
hurt guys like me and some ofthe younger guys. That were, you
know, planning on running more oftheir schedule because it's uh more regional.
It was more regional. So withthat going away, it is obviously affected.
I do want to say a hugethank you to any of the promoters
that might be listening. Thanks forstepping up. I I know that they're

(07:44):
they're you know, Attica's of Freemonts, the Sharing, the Toomics, all
the all the people in Ohio andWestern Pa. They've all tried to step
up a little bit to help fillthat gap with some better paying shows.
Hopefully you know, that grows,you know, because with All Stars gone,
I mean, it was really akick in the rear end. It

(08:05):
wasn't it wasn't exactly great for ateam like mine. But so with that
being said, you know, oursponsors, we still have to travel quite
a bit to represent the Hercules brandand our other partners. Mohilog Justis has
got numerous warehouses kind of around aroundthe country here a little bit. They're
they're growing, so we'll get outand about and you know, I've always

enjoyed traveling, especially with my family. You know, I know, we
got a couple of trips planned uptowards Wisconsin, a couple of trips maybe
out of East, you know,but there again, we'll see how see
how things get rolling here, seewhat our budget's gonna allow, and see
how we're racing. You know,if we're racing good, we're more apt

to get out on the road alittle more. The world of Outlaws,
we we've kind of talked to them, and we'll run quite a few of
their shows, being that we've supportedthem in the past. You know,
you you they're they're they're really coolabout how they handle that, and you
know, they kind of take careof you a little bit and make sure

make sure that you can come racewith them and and that's basically a thank
you and just a first class wayhand on their operation and uh still supporting
guys like us that are fortunate enoughto still do it. That's pretty cool
to hear. I I haven't reallyI haven't thought much about that, but
I've heard around the periphery that thatthey will they tend to to make sure

(09:31):
that you're taking care of them andlet you know that they want you there
because they want what's good for racingand what's good for the drivers too,
right, Yeah, it's a twoway Street. So that's that's pretty cool
to hear from the from the driver'sside. Yeah, I mean, they
they've always been you know, they'vealways kind of you know, it goes
all the way back to the guyslike Danny Smith and and you know,

if you if you let them knowthat you're coming, that they'll try to
do something. You know, maybeit's not always very much or money or
you know, whatever it may bethat they can do to help you or
represent your sponsors, they work withyou and and I've always been very appreciative
of that, you know, anduh, you know, we'll see I
mean, you know, obviously thehigh Limit deal it doesn't race a lot

(10:16):
in our area. Well, youknow, but we're probably gonna hit a
few of their shows. They've definitelythe one thing that I that I do
applaud them for is is making youknow, making the purses and and kind
of waking up the world of Outlawsand and it's kind of beef and the
pay up all over the country fromfrom what they did and what they're implementing.

(10:39):
You know, their series doesn't reallyyou know, it's basically another World
of Outlaws series. It really doesn'tsuit me to go follow that, you
know, and and there again,I'm a little disappointed that they didn't continue
the All Star name of the brand, just for the simple fact there's so
much history there and I'm kind ofa history guy, whether it's racing or
just uh life in general. Andyou know, I just really wish up

(11:01):
more it got done there. Butuh, you know, you know,
maybe the changes for better. Well, time will tell and we'll see how
it all shakes out. You mentionedthat, uh, you know, the
All Stars going away kind of leftthat void, and you said it was
a kick in the rear. Ithink Donnie Shott said it was a kick
in the nuts for us so Ohioand Pennsylvania people. But how how big

(11:22):
do you think that void is goingto be? Kind of now knowing that
our promoters are stepping up and tryingto help fill that void. Well,
I mean, you know, Ifeel like that, I feel like being
around the sport so long, Ifeel like only time is going to tell,

(11:43):
you know, is you know,probably when I when I was younger,
i'd probably been way more voisterous aboutit and and maybe said stuff that
I shouldn't, I guess, ormaybe some stuff that I should I don't
know, but you know, youkind of learned that this has happened more
than one time through sprint car racing. You know that there again, like

(12:07):
the part that I really really feellike it was kicking the rear, kicking
the nuts, whatever you want tocall it, uh bullshit, is that
they got rid of the name andthe history side of it. You know,
I understand. I didn't think whenthis first started, when I kind
of heard and talked to the guys, the High Limit guys at Eldor before

(12:31):
they ever had their first race,I didn't think that it was going to
head the direction that it did.But you know, after owning my own
team, I also know that there'sa business side that a lot of you
know, a lot of us don'tnecessarily understand, and sometimes the fans don't
understand. And and like you know, like I'll be the first to me
like I said, I don't understandall of it, and you know,

(12:52):
some of us business and and youknow, they're trying to grow a brand
and they have their own reasonings,and you know there's there's things that they're
doing is definitely helping and sprint carracing, and then you know there's other
things that maybe it's not it's definitelyhurt. It's definitely gonna hurt our region.
It's just it's gonna take to takesome time see what the promoters do,
see how they do it. Youknow. The problem that you have

(13:16):
is is like we all have ourown ideas on each side of the fence,
whether we own a race car,driver, race car or crew chief
versus a promoter that's trying to makemoney with the track and put on the
best show for the fans and getfans through the gate versus the series.
I mean, those are all differentavenues of how to approach the sport,

(13:37):
and sometimes they don't all line upmaybe the way that we want them to
from all sides of the fence.And and that's what only time's gonna tell,
you know. The bad thing isis like we take an All Star
out is the All Stars kind ofwent to bat for the teams, and
some of the promoters claim that theydon't make money, but yet the All

(14:01):
Star races, notoriously in Ohio andaround this region were still the best,
some of the most profitable races forthe promoters, you know, and in
turn, some of the things thatthey wanted to take away the All Stars
went to bat for the race teams, and you know, so I don't
know how that all that's gonna work, because there's other times where there's promoters

(14:22):
that took a chance with an AllStar race due to weather or whatever and
they kind of took it into short. So you know, all that being
said, it's just I think time'sgonna Time's gonna play out and the race
season will play out. And likeI said, I it's pretty cool what
some of the tracks and promoters aredoing, and it gives guys an opportunity

(14:45):
to still take in a little moremoney than normal weekly shows. And you
know, life in general, thecost is up on everything, so it's
not just racing, but racing itself. In the last probably five to ten
years, I mean, I don'tknow what the percentage would be, but
it would be quite a bit,and what the cost has went up,

(15:07):
and so it's harder. I mean, it's harder to do it. You
know, Sponsorship d dollars are harderto get. You know, I still
think they're out there if a guygoes and he's on doors and and does
the right things, but you know, it starts getting spread thin you know,
and you know, all those thingsfactor into what's going on. And
uh, time will tell. Isaid to somebody earlier this year that it

(15:33):
seems like racing has gotten so expensive. And they said, gotten so expensive.
It's always been incredibly expensive. Yeah, and and and I would agree
with that statement, other than thefact that normally it hasn't really increased at
the the rate that it's increased now, right, Yeah, you know,
like let's say before, yeah,it would go up. Let's just say,

(15:54):
let's use to use an example,two to three percent. Well,
let's win up eight. You know. That's the part that it's hard to
keep up with, you know.And and there again, it's across the
board. I mean, go buya gallon of milk. I mean,
and so then you got fans thatmaybe can't afford to go as much as
they used to. You got andyou got promoters battling it for that entertainment

(16:15):
dollar. And then you know,their expensive went up. It costs more
to run trucks around the track andprep it, and more to turn the
lights on it, more for theirfood, you know. So I mean
that side of it's just tough.It's a tough air to live in.
Right now as far as being onthe entertainment side of things, and that's
what we do. I mean,we you know, if it wasn't for

(16:37):
the fans coming to the track,I wouldn't get to do what I love
and uh, you know, thetracks wouldn't you know, open the gates.
So uh, you know, I'mjust I just hope that it all
balances itself out and the fans geta get a great show every night.
And you know, at the endof the year, we're sitting to take
it talking about, Man, thatwent way better than what we thought it

(16:57):
would go. You know that that'swhat we all want, right mhmm.
I think. So there's there's stilldefinitely a lot of money to be one
here in Ohio, and like youmentioned, you know, a lot of
the tracks for bringing up the pursesand stuff like that. So you know,
but again, like you said,time will tell. Yeah, I
mean, it's uh, you know, it's obviously there's parts of it.

(17:19):
This from a car owners especially standpoint, it's it's frustrating. But you know,
there again, I guess as I'vedone this longer and longer, I've
learned to just kind of mind myown stay in my lane, do what's
best for my team, try todo with best for my sponsors, and

(17:41):
and you know, do what dowhat I think is the best for the
fans, and and be grateful forI get it due because uh, you
know, not every not everybody getsto drive race cars for a living,
and I'm very fortunate, lucky tostill be doing it. So, uh,
pretty excited for the hopefully hopefully wecan knock off some wins this year.

(18:06):
I was looking, I mean,I appreciate your perspective on that.
I think you ran with at leastfive different series a race with five or
six different series last year, sobeing having all that exposure, working with
all those different promoters, I mean, I think your your opinion and your
view on that is valuable. SoI appreciate your take on that. Well,

(18:29):
thank you. I mean it's youknow, like I've said many times,
like I've made a lot of mistakesin my career, and you know,
like we all do, right,so but you kind of learn and
and you you know, I've hada lot of people like Bob Hampshire and
Roger McLain and Carl Owner, VeraWarnamon, now Chuck Bills from Ohio Logistics

(18:53):
and people at hercules that kind ofyou know, if I got questions or
I wonder how I'm supposed to dealwith something or handle something I ask or
I think from things that they havetold me. And you know, I've
been very fortunate to have a lotof great people around me, my family.
You know, I got cousins thatrace, I got cousins that work

(19:17):
on cars and run race teams.You know, I feel like that I've
been been able to be a smallpart of watching Creed Kiminol grow and that's
pretty cool to have my daughter.You know, just just so many,
so many cool things, and youlearn from all of that to try not

(19:37):
to do the wrong things quite asmuch. So if you had If there's
two events this summer that you're definitelyyou know, you want to be a
royal, kings is one of them. I feel like he likes Seldora.
Yeah, yeah, give me no, no, Just if there's two that

(20:03):
you you definitely want to be,kings Row is one of them, which
you know, I it's it's interestingthat that we've talked to a lot of
drivers that said I'm going to beat that. We're going to go do
that no matter what even if weare if we're upfront, or if we
are learning, you know, we'regonna go do it. It's something I
want to be a part of,and I I will confess that is my

That is the first sprint car raceI ever went to. I grew up
in I grew up in Georgia.I grew up I I've said this so
many times on this podcast. Igrew up with sprint car fan trapped in
Late Model Country, and when Ifound a girl from Ohio, I said,
I'll pack our stuff, let's gogoing to Ohio And the Kings Row

(20:48):
was my first event, and Ihave been I was a fan ahead of
time, but seeing that and beingin that place is incredibly special as a
fan to me. Uh And Itry to make it every single year.
But what is it for you?Why was that? Why were you so
quick to answer for the King's Room? Uh? Man, I just I

(21:08):
don't know. Just Eldor just sospecial. And I get very emotional talking
about Eldor. You know, whenI was a little kid, I've told
this story numerous times throughout my career, but I remember being into King's Royal
and my favorite driver was Jack Hanshield. And I remember he won the King's

(21:30):
Royal and I was so excited Iliterally started crying, like and I can't
remember who I was, probably mydad and he's like, what is wrong
with you? And I'm like,I don't know, Like it just was
overwhelming. And you know when Igot to race there and we've had some
success there, uh, you know, just it's just I don't know,

(21:55):
the adrenaline, the people, thefacility, on the history. Being from
Ohio, like you know, that'sall you ever heard about was when I
was a little kid growing up aroundrace cars, was Helldora Speedway and what
was going on at El Doorra Andso I mean to this day when I
start talking about Eldorra, I gethalf choked up and I feel like a

little kid. And you know that'swhy. I mean, it's special.
You know, it holds a specialplace and in my life and in my
in my career and in my heartand with my family. I mean they
know, like my daughters know,like, well, you know, that's
just part of it. That's youknow, where do you want to if

(22:37):
you want to win a race,where do you want to El Dora?
Like so in the King's Royal it'sjust I don't know, just the whole,
the whole sitting in a king's chair, being a king for a year.
I mean, I know it soundskind of cheesy or whatever, but
like, damn, it's the King'sRoyal, like it's been going on for
it seems like forever, and likethe best of the best is one the

(22:59):
King's Royal. Wouldn't you want tomake that race? You know? When
I'm a kid from Ohio, I'mnot from I mean, obviously, the
Knoxville Nationals are huge, right,you know, in some people's eyes,
is obviously bigger than the King's Royal, But not from a kid from Finland,
from Benton Ridge, Ohio, inthe middle of a bunch of cornfields
that El Dora is the baddest placeon the planet. So I don't know

(23:22):
if that explanation is what you wanted, but that's damn sure how I feel.
Yeah, it's Earls, It's Earls. Yeah, yeah, I can
remember, I mean, probably thirtyfive years ago, sitting in Moultrie,
Georgia and watching Thursday Night Thunder onESPN and watching, you know, watching
El Door. I'm like, whatis this place? I never in my

(23:42):
life dreamed that I would know theins and outs of that facility like I
do now. You know, I'dnever dreamed that I would just park my
car and walk around there like Ido now. It's it's unreal. And
every time I have the same feeling. Every time I open my car door
and step out on the grass there, I get excited like I'm a ten
year old. I really do.When I don't know what that last gas

(24:08):
station is, you know, comingfrom Dayton. But once that past that
last gas station, decide whether orI'm gonna stop there. I mean,
you know that getting this gets creakedup, you know, like we're almost
there, say, I mean,it's pretty darn cool. I mean I
got to like watch my dad's jawhit the floor the first time he saw

(24:32):
cars that speed at Eldora. Itwas his first sprint car race and uh
it was probably twenty sixteen Kings Royaland he was He's like, these guys
are crazy, and I mean heraced motorcycles. It works. He's like,
he got thesey are crazy and hehe loved it. Like he hasn't
been to the Kings Royal in acouple of years, but we always make

(24:56):
it a point to try to getDad to at least one or two sprint
car race. It's so that hecan see how crazy this stuff is,
how fun it is too. Youknow. I tell everybody that I'm like,
especially as an example my girls goingto school and playing supports you.
You know, I meet a lotof parents that most of them they know

(25:17):
what a sprint car is or whatever, but they've never been. And I
They're like a bunch of them wantingto go. And I'm like, man,
if you if you just go toEl Dora and and just your first
experience, it might be your last. It may not be your thing,
right, but I can promise youyou go to El Dora and I put
you down into stand you up againstthe wall in the infield to turn one
or down into turn three. Andand when you leave there, when somebody

(25:40):
asks you the next time if youknow what a sprint car is, if
you don't get a little bit excited, like, yes, I went to
one and those that is the crazy, most outrageous thing I think I've seen.
You know, That's what they're goingto say, you know, and
and they'll it'll impress them enough thatthey'll never forget it. At least I
believe that in my heart anyway.And normally the people that do go for

(26:04):
the first time and go do somethinglike that, they usually they usually the
adrenaline it gets them back. Ohyeah, I mean I remember my first
time is standing down at the infieldwall turn one. I think I think
it was Logan Shoeheart and Brad Sweethad their left front tires about six inches
from the wall. They could justfeel the air get pulled out of you

(26:25):
and then all of a sudden youneed to change your pants, you know,
I mean, it was it wasincredible. I have it on video
and occasionally just go back and watchit, like this stuff's just really cool.
Yeah, I mean, you know, you know, at the end
of the day, you know,I, like I said, I've been
I will forever be humbled and gratefulto get to do what I do right,

(26:49):
But at the end of the day, I'm still a massive sprint car
fan because there's I mean, there'snothing more badass than a freaking four ten
wing sprint car. H You know, I'm gonna my my ten year old
will get his first Eldor experience thisyear, and I can't wait. I
can't wait to see the look onhis face. So I was going to

(27:12):
ask too. So that was numberone. What's the number two race that
we're definitely gonna catch you out thisyear? Manho Probably you know obviously the
I I've won the Bride Doughty Classicyears ago. It would be pretty cool.
And being the fact that it's postto home and our sponsors Orhiologistics is

(27:37):
a huge part of it, youknow, that's that's definitely a big event
for us. Very stressful from ourside, you know, because it's Ahologistics
Pride Doty Classic, you you know, trying to make the race and be
a part of that throughout the night, to give the employees and all the
people from Ohio Logistics something to beproud of. You know. That's obviously

(28:00):
huge event our year. The otherone that I've really started to look forward
well, really two others that Ilook forward to realiant enjoyed going to sharing
speed Away, so the lou BlaneyRace and then you know, the gym
Ford Classic. You know, I'dlike to get one of those. I
feel like we've been pretty successful atFremont. That be a really cool one

(28:25):
to get before I you know,someday when I'm done racing to say that
we won that one. So butobviously you can droil Brad Doddy Classic and
then it's really tough there because there'sa lot of races that mean a lot
to me in places places that meana lot to me. Did some strong
finishes that Sharon and at the gymFord in twenty twenty three, I think,

(28:48):
yeah, yeah, no, Actuallyit was the AFCs Championship at Fremont,
is what it was. Did youfinish third or fourth that weeknd?
I know, to be honest withyou, I'm not. It kind of
all blended together in the middle ofsummer on. Everything was kind of chaotic
all year. I felt like fromthe middle of the year on we got

(29:10):
more competitive and and you know,I felt like we were in contention and
you know, won a couple ofraces, but I felt like we were
in contention more and I feel likeif that can spill over and you know,
work on a few things, maybemaybe we can win a few more
races this year. Yeah. Ithink it was a third place of the

(29:30):
week before before the gim and Joyfor a Classic at Free Month it was
right, yeah, yeah. Howimportant? How important is it to uh
be able to kind of get yourmojo here earlier early in the season,
after having you know, some ofthat nice moments, and to end the
season. Well, I'm a littlenervous. Honestly. It's probably the most

I've sat out of a race carin years and and and there again not
really by choice. Uh, wejust got our they're back like two weeks
ago. They literally finished rapping ittoday and so it's put everything else,
kind of the race car stuff onit. You know, we're playing catch
up. So that's got it hasme a little nervous. But I felt

(30:12):
like that we really didn't have alot to do as far as the car
side of stuff. So you know, I'm I'm nervously excited to get going.
I'm normally normally I'm a kind ofkind of the guy that usually it
takes me about a month or soto really kind of get going. I

(30:32):
mean, I don't know if it'sbecause I need to have somebody working on
my car, a crew chief,or if it's the fact that's just how
I It just takes me a littlebit to get rolling, get get a
rhythm, get everything back kind offlowing, I guess, but I don't
know. I'm excited to get going. You know. I hope that we

(30:56):
come out at the gate strong andit carries all the way through this summer.
But I've done it long enough thatI know that if you don't let
the highs get too high and thelow is too low, race, it's

been racing since I was fifteen,and I've been damn lucky, and I
feel like, you know, Ifeel like I'm getting to be guys and
these guys around the area and racingand like I said before, I'm very
happy and thankful and glad that Istill get to do it nine days out.
