(00:21):
Hello race fans, and welcome backto the Ohio Derek Track Podcast. We've
had a couple of weeks off,but we're back here after another jam packed
weekend of racing UH in Ohio.Jacob was on the road and made it
to multiple tracks this past weekend anda huge weekend coming up across spread all
(00:42):
over Ohio. Lots of different sprintcars UH sprint car events going on this
coming weekend for the holiday weekend, and we had a lot of talk about
we're gonna try to cram it inand see what all we can get to.
First, let's talk about we postedthe weekend recap UH, which is
an awesome READI if you haven't seenthat, go to Ohio Dirt dot com
(01:03):
and check out Jacob Jacob Hord's weekendrecap that he does on a weekly basis.
And I may or may not getit posted as quick as I should
have. I may or may notget it typed on the weekend, but
uh, let's yeah, let's talkthrough that a little bit really quick.
Let's let's start with Buddy Koefoyd returningto Attica with the Outlaws and getting the
(01:23):
win. Yeah, I mean,it's it's been a minute. Since we've
seen Buddy at Attica, it's probablybeen a couple of years, but well,
I don't know, maybe he racedlast year in one of their off
cards for the Dudey or something.I don't remember. It was a long
time ago, but yeah, itwas, you know, brilliant, awesome
battle between him and Carson Messito prettymuch had entire race. You know,
(01:48):
Buddy led early and then Carson usedto restart to get by him, and
Buddy tracked him back down and lappedtraffic, and I mean they were side
by side pretty much the last fivelaps the track. Out of this track,
videographer Brian Bores said, he prettymuch just like stood in one spot
and turns three and four and justspun around in historical the last ten laps,
(02:09):
just watching those two and uh,I think he posted the last five
or so laps on his YouTube page. I need to check that out.
But it was it was really funto watch up from the press box,
pit tower or not Pitt Tower, front stand tower or whatever you want to
call it. But you know,Johnny Gibson, you know, a flight
(02:30):
of stairs above you, and Imean it was what a race. Good
to see buddy when get that firstone of the year. Good to see
Carson, you know, another guywho came to Ohio and kind of you
know, cut his teeth here finishedsecond. So and I know steph Linder
and MIKEA. Linder were pretty happywith that too. I did confirm that
(02:52):
Stephanie Linder breathed during that feature.I had to make sure. But yeah,
I mean that was And what acrowd Friday night at Attica. I
mean that was like just to tickunder like adoted crowd. I mean,
we were pretty packed in there andit was it was an awesome sight to
(03:13):
see, you know, despite theif you ether, I should say,
the weather really didn't play a part, but it was a little iffy throughout
the day and it was nice tosee Attaka filled up pretty much to the
brim. Yeah, I mean thatwas. I mean, it's it's always
good to see that track, tosee that the crowd come to that track
(03:35):
because it's it's loud. I mean, that is that is a very energetic
crowd at Attica. That's one ofthe things that I really enjoy about it
is is there very the fans ofAttica are so incredibly engaged and to have
that feature with for the regulars Atticathose to have those two guys who kind
of grew up at Attica, Iguess, you know, in the lender
(03:58):
camp and and go at it there, you know, at the end of
the race. So that's that's awesomethat that you have, that that happened,
and the magic seems to happen inAticism. Oh, I mean it's
it's happened like almost every week sofar this season. I mean it's been
nuts, just banger after banger ofa feature. But yeah, going back
(04:19):
to the crowd, like you mentionedhow energetic the crowd was, you should
have heard the crowd after the firsttime Sheldon Toddenshield went back out onto the
track after his first like little tipoverlike they were pretty loud, and then
you know, he flipped pretty bigagain and you know, his team and
half the other teams that were theregot his car back together, and I
(04:42):
think the crowd reaction after a secondflip probably registered on the Richter Stale like
it was they probably heard him inWillard not gonna lie, that crowd was
loud. And then watching Buddy andCarson battle, I mean you could hear
the crowd over the cars. Sothat was that was really cool. You
(05:03):
love to see it, you know, we love to see no empty seats
satur race track. I wonder ifDrew was back there helping him get shut.
Yeah, Drew, Drew was there. My wife got pictures of him.
Actually, I know he was there. I wonder, yes, I
after her Sheldon's second flip, Isaw Drew walking back to the seventeen trailer
(05:26):
with a front axle with one fronttire attack. Okay, of course you
bring Drew there and he's going tofind something to work on. The first
picture I saw of Drew, hewas holding the baby. So then then
maybe the next picture was in swappedthe baby for an axle. I know,
typical outlaw room member. You cantake the guy away from the outlaws,
(05:48):
but you can't take the outlaw awayfrom the guy. Awesome, so
great show Friday night, Saturday Night. You went over to Wayne County.
Has been a minute that you've beenthere? I think I when did I
go to Wayne County last? Itwas last year at some point. I
just don't remember what show, butyeah, I went to the only place
(06:10):
in Ohio where it rained on Saturday. Got about two miles from the track
and it's downpouring, But yeah,I just I wanted to see Wayne County.
I wanted to do some local stuffinstead of driving the extra to or
extra hour and a half to sharein and just stay home, get home
at a decent time. But yeah, it was uh man, I felt
(06:34):
like I was in Marshalltown on Saturdayat Wayne Wayne County. It's like,
even with the rain, we startedlike ten minutes late with hot laps,
rolled through all the hot laps.I mean we're doing five divisions here,
and then heat races. I meanwe started those like ten minutes late.
That includes opening ceremonies. They werestarted or slated to start at seven,
(06:58):
and I think we started like seventen and then all of a sudden,
it's future time. Like it's likeholy smokes, like there are no be
mains. It was. It wasgreat, you know, four ten Future
was pushed out on track about eightfifteen. It was like still light out.
Granted there was go ahead, noyou go ahead? How was the
(07:19):
How was the track service? Betterthan I thought it was going to be.
When I got there, I'm like, oh dear. I mean there
was like water standing on the frontstretch, but I mean, to quote
Jason Florey from speed Week, that'sthe race I went to last year.
From speed Week last year, He'slike, give me an hour, I'll
(07:39):
give you a racetrack. They getit done. Man may do smokes.
I mean that track came around prettygood. They're in the middle and the
bottom it turns three and four. The late models really didn't like that.
They were probably going about twenty milesan hour. If you're going on the
bottom and they catch a rut andhook a right into the car, that
(08:01):
would catch them and made for agood racing. But I'm sure those guys
really didn't like it. If youknow, running the top isn't your thing.
But overall, I mean it waskind of a downpour and it worked.
I mean it was I know, they pushed the tires up a little
bit, probably about six or eightfeet in the corners. They pushed those
(08:22):
tires up. But for you know, all things considered, it was a
really good track surface there. Saturdaynight right on we Peterson at the Men.
Yes, that was his second winat Wayne County this year. Second
time he's at Wayne County this year, and second time he has swept the
(08:46):
night at Wayne County. You know, set quick Time won the heat race
and let all lapse of the future, which your heat ray stuff is impressive
because if you if you qualify quickTime, you start like fourth in your
first heat. So he's got onfourth to first and its two heat races
are And it was pretty fun towatch here Saturday night, and I took
around for the Late Models and watchKyle Moore, you know, dominate and
(09:09):
this Hey dudes, and then justwatched like Ryan Markham and Dave Hornicle and
JR. Gentry just beat and bangon each other for second, third,
and fourth place. That was kindof where that turned free came into play.
But yeah, it was again,it was a really great night at
Wayne County. They had a reallygood crowd there too, and about three
(09:31):
quarters of that crowd was still therewatching the ministock feature because it was like,
I don't know, ten thirty ishprobably. I mean I was home
and in bed by midnight, whichwas the goal. So yeah, thank
you to Wayne County for getting mehome at a decent time. I think
(09:52):
this is going to be a hugesummer for racing in Ohio. I really
do, based on the you know, the crowd ouds that have already been
out the schedule. I mean,I know a lot of people I heard
a lot of chatter about, youknow, we don't get to All Stars
this year. We usually get allyou know what twenty four All Stars shows
(10:13):
or something like that. I don'tknow exactly what the number was, but
I mean, we picked up someoutlaw shows, and I just think it's
going to be a big summer forspread cars in Ohio in general. I
was a little concerned there for likeAttica's Spring Nationals because that was we stuck
(10:37):
with our six thousand to win,you know, big show like we did
with the All Stars, and theweather was a little questionable the night that
we ran, and it was alittle cold and maybe as our rain,
but that night, the crowd justwasn't there. And it's like, is
it because the weather? Is itbecause the All Star name isn't with that
(11:01):
event anymore? You know? Butto see the crowd come in for these
other like regular shows there at Atticahas been has been good to see.
And then like I said, youknow, for the Outlaw show is basically
like the Doughtie with how many peoplewere there. So I'm excited to see
(11:22):
how many people show up tomorrow night. I guess at Attica, we got
it, you know, another reallynice show, big late model show,
plus four tens and double three ohfive features. So I'm excited to see
that crowd and I'm excited to seewhat Speed Week does crowd wise. You
know, it's not going to havethe all Star name associated with it,
(11:43):
but it still is Speed Week, and I think there's a lot of excitement
for Speed Week, especially now thoughwe're what like three weeks away from it,
so you know, it's getting talkedabout more and I think I think
there's gonna be a lot of hypeLet's speed Week this year. So you
(12:05):
when you were referring to Attica, you said we So I've been meaning to
bring this up for several podcasts. There are several episodes that we've done,
and I keep forgetting it every singletime. Let's let's talk about your role
at Attica now, So you havea new role as a part of Attica
Raceway Park. Go ahead and andtalk about that really quick before we talk
(12:26):
about what's coming up this weekend.Yeah, so they asked me to kind
of jump on board with their socialmedia team there. Oh, was that
last September around Labor Day, andoh last October, I started, you
know, making posts for Attica andthen you know, throughout the off season,
(12:48):
I was, you know, doingthe updates this and that, and
then yeah, I'm just kind ofthere. I'm their social media guy now.
So all the updates you see arefrom me all the you know,
I try to be fun. Idon't know if I am or not.
I know some of the staff likeswhat some of the stuff I say,
whether it's good or not. Idon't know why they let me have this
(13:09):
much power, but yeah, soit's you know, the person you know
it's tweeting the heat race updates isme, and you know, getting the
photos, tweeting the photos, whateveryou want to do, whatever you want
to call it. I guess justhaving fun with it, you know,
putting my own spin on things andjust trying to be creative and you know,
help promote Attica basically, and youknow, hopefully get some new eyes
(13:33):
on the place. I think that'swhat a lot of racetracks need, is
just new and different eyes on it, just to you know, show off
what we have to offer. AndI truly believe Attica is one of the
best tracks in the nation, andyou know, we'll treat it as such.
You know, I'll act like it, you know, as long as
(13:54):
as long as I'm a race hand, really because I truly believe that,
you know, Attaka is one ofthe best tracks in the nation, and
it's pretty cool to get to beable to do that, you know,
just I don't know, however, many years I started going there, like
twenty sixteen, I was just hangingout with my friends and like Steph Linder
(14:15):
chose me as the the race fanof the night or something, or to
tweet your seat winner, and Igot to go down and get in victory
lane with those Byron Reed, BobbyClark, and now Corey McCoy, which
I was Corey McCoy's first ever dirtwin in the truck and now Corey and
I are really good friends, andyou know we've obviously had Byron on the
(14:37):
podcast and Bobby was Bobby Clark's anabsolute legends. So it was actually,
you know, looking back, thatwas really cool. So to be able
to you know, do this andhave fun with it and hopefully make new
fans, It's just it's a privilege, it's an honor. I'm enjoying it
a lot. Really us like allthe messages you get, but well no,
(15:05):
because you know, mother nature isjust like, oh, I'm going
to rain on Fridays. That's allI'm going to do this year is rain
on Fridays. And I think tomorrowis no exception. But you know,
you see, you get a lotof the messages like hey, are you
racing? Are you racing? It'slike if there's an update, we're gonna
post it. Like but I meaneven that, it really honestly hasn't been
(15:28):
bad. It's just yeah, there'sbeen a huge learning curve and I'm excited
to see what I can do withit. Not only that, I mean
not only have you taken over thesocial media for Attica, but you've had
some articles or a article posted iton Dirt Tracker Justin Justin I was a
(15:52):
year or two ago. He askedme about it. I just never got
around to it until earlier this seasonwith the DJ article. And then I
had another idea in my mind aboutgetting Cameron Burley and kins Are Dusser,
Dussell dr Wow Cameron and Kinser, because you know they started out working on
(16:14):
the you know, Nate Dussel Machineand with the family and now they're both
out on national tours. You know, Cameron's with Tyler Courtney and High Limit
and Kens are disjoined Sheldon Hoddenshield beforethe season started and they went back to
back nights at Volusha to start theseason. It's like, well, I
guess I got to get this articlegoing now. Huh. They kind of
forced my hand, so you know, fast forward to that one and that
(16:41):
was a pretty cool article too. It's it's good seeing, you know,
some of our local kids make itup to the national level and do what
they love. Awesome. So followingif you don't follow Jacob Hord Racewatcher on
Twitter, make sure you do alsoat a raceway park follow that as well.
And we've mentioned Justin Fielder and DirtTracker many times here, so we've
(17:07):
got Jacob has content all over theplace and weird you know, we've got
the podcast here. So speaking aboutthe Ohio Dirt Track podcast, let's talk
about what's coming up this weekend.Lots of stuff we already mentioned. Attica
is coming up to Well, thispodcast has gonna come out on Friday,
so it's coming out tonight. TheAttica is Racing tonight got the four tens
our Man late models yeap three ofthe double yep, double three of five
(17:32):
features. So double three of fivefeatures at Attica Friday night and then Saturday
night Freemont. Right, yes, they're around a double features too, for
all three double features for all threethey call it the double down, Is
that right, something like that, the double down Throwdown or something. Yeah,
(17:52):
So Freemont has a huge show onSaturday night, Saturday and Sunday at
Atomic Friday, Saturday, sorry,Friday and Saturday at Atomic or the World
of Outlaws with the Extreme Midgets withthe Extreme Yes, with the Extreme Midgets,
and then Monday night the Outlaws returnedto Fremont for the first time in
(18:14):
eight years. Yeah, like eightyears since the Outlaws have been at Fremont.
So man, like the Outlaws havejust been hanging out all month.
But I'm man. I mean,we have a big late model show Friday
night, we have you know, obviously the Outlaws Friday night, Outlaws Saturday
Night in the state, and thenlike you said, Outlaws back at Fremont
(18:37):
after a day off on Sunday. But I mean even Sunday there's a huge
sprint car show going on at PortRoyal seventy five thousand to win the Whitkert
and Wainsfield might even be racing onSunday too, with like three sixties,
I think they are. Yeah,so yeah, I mean we just haven't
jam packed weekend really. So it'snot it's not if you want to see
(19:03):
racing, it's where do you go? The decision you have. The decision
you have to make is where doyou Yeah, I mean do you stay
north of two twenty four? Doyou go south of two twenty four?
Granted south of two twenty four isquite south of two twenty four. North
of two twenty fours two minutes northof two twenty four, But I mean,
no matter where you go, you'regoing to see great racing. Now.
(19:27):
You know. Obviously, like Fridaynight I'll be at Attica because you
know, I'm obligated to be there. But Saturday, uh, you know
I get to go to Anderson andwatch pavements sprint cars for five hundred laps.
I mean, no matter where wego, like, you're going to
have big races everywhere. It's justthe Memorial Day weekend and that's that's what
(19:47):
we do. I'll be a threemonth Monday, and I'll be playing baseball
or coaching baseball all weekend this weekend. That's kind of part for the course.
But let's talk about what we expectto see. I'm trying to remember
last year the Outlaws were at Attica. I'm sorry, sorry, the Outlaws
(20:10):
were at Atomic last summer. Uhdid Gravel win that? I don't think.
I think it was Mesito won oneof THEMANI one the other. Okay,
I can't remember, so, Imean, I I don't know if
my opinion is I don't think thattrack really lends to a local to have
(20:33):
an advantage or a regional driver tohave an advantage. I think that I
think Atomic definitely gives an outlaw driveran advantage to get the victory either.
Yeah. I mean it's it's avery fast and very high banks track,
so you're gonna need you're gonna needthe motor to do it. And you
(20:57):
know that's just not some of theseguys have. You know, they just
don't have the motor program that theseoutlaw guys have, I should say.
And there's nothing wrong with that, because you know, the Outlaws, you
know, up until this year, have only gone to tracks that aren't named
El Dora like four times a year, so I mean it is what it
(21:22):
is. But I mean we stillhave a very strong contingental locals down there
that can you know, do somedamage against the outlaws. I mean,
look at you know, at aFriday night, we had five out of
eight locals in the dash, youknow, Brandon Spittheather finished four, right,
Cayler Henry fifth. I mean anAtomic has some really strong locals.
(21:45):
I mean you look at you know, guys like Cole Duncan. Dude is
one pretty much everywhere in Ohio,in Kentucky because you know, Cole Duncan
just wins races. So I'm hopingfor like a cold Duncan win because that
would be pretty awesome. I don'tthink they'd stop partying Atomic until Wednesday.
(22:07):
I don't have to talk to Dave, and it met the over under on
that. But in the new campgrounddown there, oh my gosh. I
mean I saw a picture tonight theywere like they have people in the stands
tonight like watching corn hole and it'slike, I mean, yeah, like
holy smokes, Like this is likea it'll be like a three or four
day thing for Atomic down there. This is really cool to see what Charlie
(22:29):
Vest and Dave Andrews have done downthere. You know, I'm excited to
get down there for speed Week andhopefully a few other shows too. Won't
be able to make it this weekend, you know, just other obligations.
But who do you think is gonnawin Friday Saturday at Atomic? Who?
I don't know? And you putme on the spot. I did.
(22:52):
I think Wellsito wins again. Idon't know which day. I don't know.
I it's Friday or Saturday. It'simpossible to tell. So I think
we get another win. I don'tknow. I don't want to stall here.
I wouldn't be shocked if Mesito wins, both say, I'll be interested
to see how like guys like CarsonMessuito, Cole Mesito, and Buddy do
Monday at Fremont. I mean, those are you know, three guys that
(23:15):
I think won all three one Shockchampionships here at Fremont if I remember right.
So yeah, Monday, Monday atFremont. I think it's going to
be a really awesome show. Notto divest from Atomic, but yeah,
I mean let's let's yeah, let'smove on to that because I talked.
I said that, you know,it's it's gonna be hard, difficult for
(23:37):
a local to beat an out lawat Atomic Fremont. However, I don't
think that. I think that Fremontis it has an incredible amount of character
as a track, as a surface, and I think, you know,
I think some of the you know, some of those teams are gonna struggle
(23:57):
when they get on that track.Mm hmm. That's uh, you don't
need the huge motor, you know, so your motor is not going to
be able to bail you out likeon the big tracks. You know,
it's gonna come down the more whohas the skill, who has the knowledge
to uh navigate Freemont. It's gonnabe. It's gonna be awesome, That's
(24:19):
what it's gonna be. It's gonnabe like you know, last Friday at
Attica. I think the locals aregoing to do really good, and I
just hope a local can win.I hope, I hope a guy like
you know, Cole Mesito can win, get that first out while win.
I think that'd be really cool,you know. But again, I I
just I hope the locals do reallygood and uh prove that, you know,
(24:44):
Ohio locals are the best out there. If I had I'm struggling to
pick. I think I think Buddycould do well, oh yeah, on
Monday at Fremont. I don't know, It's it's hard to say, like
I really think it's a true rollof the dice, you know. I
(25:06):
mean, I think I think Donniecould manage that track really well. I
mean to kind of backtrack a littlebit on saying that, you know,
the outlaw teams might not do aswell, but I think Donnie could really
really manage Fremont better than a lotof the guys on the track. And
he's going to be one of theoutlaws, you know, other than like
(25:26):
Carson and Buddy and probably David Gravelthat has a good amount of experience at
Fremont. Yeah, you know, zero Fox, zero Foss should have experienced
at Fremont here at the All Starsa few years. Well, maybe it
may not have been the years atthe Off Stars right out Fremont, though,
I don't know. I feel likeI've seen Brock run at Fremont multiple
(25:49):
times. But you also have guyslike Tim Schaeffer that just run really well
at Fremont. You know that, you know, the faster him Schaeffer gets
done at Fremont in the future, the faster he gets to go to Frickers.
So so he's you know, motivatedto finish first and you know,
get an outlaw win. But man, it's I'm excited for Monday. I'm
(26:15):
excited for the entire weekend. Youknow it's gonna be kind of dive right
into Speed Week just a couple ofweeks later. Yeah. Uh yeah,
jam packed weekend this weekend. Uh, regular racing the week after that,
and then and then Speed Week, return of Millstream, Yeah, return of
mill Stream. It's uh, it'squickly approaching. We're just yeah, like
(26:41):
I said, three weeks away fromSpeed Week. Yeah, right on.
What else you got before we go? I I I think you want to
talk a little bit about Kayleb Henry. Yeah, I mean what can we
say about Kayleb Penry. I mean, holy smokes. You know, dude
hops in the running box for oneon one for his first full season in
(27:03):
that car. He ran I thinkKnoxville Nationals in that car last year.
But I got heard they have KevinOsmalski on the wrenches, and it's just
as far as I know, Ithink it's just you know, Caleb and
Kevin during the week working on thatcar and doing most of the race night
stuff too. Caleb came to Ohiowith zero experience in Ohio and uh,
(27:29):
I know he has a second atFremont. He just finished fifth against the
hot Laws at Attica, So it'snot going to be long before those guys
those are that car ends up inVictory Lane, either at Attica or Fremont.
I think they're they should be runninga FCS this year. I know
there's one conflict that they're kind ofconcerned about with the the Dean Middle Memorial
(27:51):
and High Limit race. But Ithink Caleb's definitely doing what the other Californians
that have come to Ohio have done, and he's making a name for himself,
you know, and uh, I'mexcited to see what he can do
this year and how he continues toprogress. I really didn't have him like
on my radar this year as likea guy that could be contending night in
(28:15):
and night out. But we've seenwith those other California kids, you know,
they just kind of come in andthey feel right at home. Yeah,
so somebody to watch, yeah, for the summer in Ohio. Yeah
awesome. Well, I think wecovered it all. You get you good,
you get everything. I think so, I think so, I think
(28:37):
we're good cool. I think thisis episode nothing like that. Yeah.
Uh, And then we took acouple of weeks off that little gap in.
We appreciate you guys tuning in alwaysto the Ohio during check podcast.
Please share on your social media Facebook, Twitter, wherever it is that you
do your social media and tell yourfriends. So we'll be back next week.
(29:03):
We'll get back together next week andkind of recap the craziness of the
weekend and all the different things thatgo on. Sounds like a plan,
so we'll plan on episode in aweek and not in two weeks. So
all right, thank you guys, and as always, get out, get
dirty, and support your local tracks.
