(00:23):
Hello race fans, and welcome backto the Ohio Dirt Track Podcast. After
months of radio silence, I knowyou're wondering if we were coming back.
Some of you might have been wonderingif we were coming back. I certainly
didn't get any messages asking where wewent. I had a couple of people
(00:43):
ask but not dead yet. Yeah, we're not quite dead yet, and
we're back. So Jacob and Ihave been We've stayed in touch, obviously,
and we didn't want this thing togo away. So we're going to
come back. And obviously there's goingto be a lot to talk about in
(01:03):
twenty twenty four, with a lotof changes in sprint car racing specifically,
so we didn't want to miss theopportunity to chime in on all this stuff.
And and plus we just love hangingout with each other, so virtually
because we hardly never see we neversee each other unless you're at the racetrack.
(01:26):
Actually kind of in your neck ofthe woods for a birthday party tonight.
But I'm right by the middle,Ohio, right down the road.
So it's been a crazy week insports. In the playoff football has been
a little while the Dolphins got decimatedin sub zero temperatures last night. The
Browns Cinderella story came crashing down yesterdayafternoon in the most unfortunate way. But
(01:51):
Jacob Port is not here to talkabout NFL football. We're here to talk
about the Chili Bowl yesterday because itwas on at Speedways at the Dussell Racing
party. The mood of the barchange considerably after I think the second pick
six destroyed the rest of their hope. Yeah, it was. It was
(02:12):
pretty brutal to pick sixes in likeless than two minutes of play. It
was. I was done. Idon't know. If I was on the
field, I would have a hardtime being done. But I'm not a
professional football player. But having allthese high expectations finding from New Mexico,
flipping in your heat and then flippingin the A mane again, true,
(02:36):
true, So yeah, let's let'slet's get into the Chili Bowl. It
was the Chili Bowl again. Idon't even I don't know how many years
this has been. Wasn't this aneven number a year or something? Oh,
it was thirty eight, I thinkthirty eight, so thirty eight Chili
Bowl, And it was it wasthe Chili Bowl. I mean, it's
tons of tons of laps. Itried to I was watching stuff on my
(03:00):
phone. I was watching when Icould sit down in front of the TV.
I was. It's just it's alot, a lot of racing and
a lot to keep up with whenyou consider the amount of drivers that are
that are there trying to work theirway up into theay mab. Was it
like three hundred and seventy drivers thisyear or three sixty five something like that.
(03:22):
Yeah, sixty five I think iswhat it was. He had a
bunch of storylines. I mean, that's that's one driver for every day of
the year that you can write storyabout. Really, I mean we had
tailored swift connections. We have shouldhave should have been able to go off,
but didn't somehow. I Mean therewas guys, you know, I
(03:44):
think his name was Elso you knowthat took the heck of a ride and
just kind of like they interviewed himafterwards, he's like, yeah, it's
done or whatever. It's chili bowl, you know, halfway out of the
seat because he didn't have like thefull seat. That's that's the oh,
the variety that the chili bowl cangive us. And then you have all
(04:06):
the serious people like the Keith Coonsand the Swindels and Chad Boat, those
guys that take it super seriously, and not that no one else doesn't take
it super seriously, but I meanthey're they're in it. They're on kill
basically, and I got a lotof other guys they're just kind of like,
we're gonna party and we might racea little bit too. But man,
(04:30):
it was a long week, buta really fun week. So other
than the whole did he have hishelmet strap on or not? What story?
What was the what was the surprisefor you this week? During the
child the surprise was probably a guylike Justin Grant not making it into the
(04:51):
show like he was. I don'teven know if he made it out of
a d mate. You know, that just goes to show that you have
to be on it uh on yourprelim night because like he I forget what
he did and this I think heflipped on his prelum night on like the
last Flap of the future, andit buried him into the e or D
(05:12):
Maine. And then you know, once you're in that ere d Maine on
Saturday, I mean you're gonna havea hard time making it into the a
man unless your name is Dacent personally, well, I mean Justin Grant has
won, however, many Friday Nightfeatures and you know he was his night
was over before opening ceremonies, Soyeah, you know, that was a
(05:35):
big surprise. I mean another surpriseto me was team As getting the opportunity
to go completely unhinged on TV andhe didn't after the whole can Macintosh instead,
So that was a surprise. Areyou sure you were surprised. I
(05:56):
was fully expecting him just to gocompletely on him. You know, you're
gonna have to go on a sevensecond delay the rest of the night because
you know, there are so manyswear words. But he was just like,
yeah, it is what it iskind of you know, it's very
Team has interviewer. I I feellike he's mellowed a little bit over the
(06:18):
last year, so just you know, uh, social media activity and I
don't know, it just seems itseems like something's a little bit different there.
Uh, And I think that's kindof a tell tale side of that
too. But who knows, youknow, we all do is the years
(06:39):
go by, we all change alittle bit, So I don't know,
but but I mean Dayson personally thatI mentioned it there just a minute ago,
but Dayson going from B to Cto be to force in the A.
I think that's probably the story ofthe night. No, obviously Logan
Cebe went in, But I thinkthe story of the night is Dasent after
(07:00):
all that he's kind of been dueto the last few years. Just to
pass I think I think Derek Dean'sis like about forty five of the best
cars out of the three hundred andsixty five carfield, and just it was
darn impressive. I think I thinkthat track doesn't take rubber. I think
a golden piller. It was goinghome with dayson Persley. Yeah, I
(07:24):
just couldn't get there. So Imean, how far in when did you
look at the track and say, maybe that's it? There it is it's
rubbered, like at what point probablyaround lap if team it's twenty itch I
was. I was with the dustles. I mean, they know what a
(07:46):
track looks like when it's going tostart taking rubber. And as we were
watching it, we're like it's gettingpretty dark down below and or down low,
and like it's going to be rubberingup pretty soon. And then once
the cameras were on CV, oncehe darted down to the bottom, You're
like, yeah, Rubber, andwe knew then and there that Buddy was
gonna have to like stuff it inon a restart basically if you wanted to
(08:11):
get any shot out the win orforce Loagan it some mistake, which Logan
was going to do. Yeah,I mean, I don't think they really
even u interacted other than like thefirst three or four laps actually, I
mean, but caution that Buddy tookthe lead and then somehow they didn't lead
(08:31):
a lap. I don't know.There hadn't only been like one or two
cars that didn't cross the line forthat lap to not count. And then
see if you got the lead back, it was getting hard to pass at
that point. Yeah, that wasthat was all she wrote for Buddy,
(08:52):
unfortunately, and Buddy's not the kindof guy that's going to go and take
someone out or win, even ifit is a chally. I think Buddy
was gonna keep it clean no matterwhat, you know. I think that's
how Logan would erace Buddy, andI think Buddy would have done the same
thing. So I wish it didn'ttake Rubber but as many laps has been
(09:13):
turned on that track last few weeks, can't win them all on the track
prep side. Yeah, I meanwe've it's dirt track or anything. We've
talked about that over and over. They want to beat a dead horse on
that. I mean, sometimes you'regonna get it perfect. Very few times
you're gonna get it perfect. Othertimes it's gonna be a dirt track,
and then sometimes you just it justmisses, right. It just it just
(09:37):
happens. And once it's done,it's done. There's nothing you can do
about it, right, And theythey tried something different this year. You
know, they didn't do the fulltrack rework which they had done in the
year's past, which takes like, you know, a couple hours and gets
smad at the Chili Bowl for uh, you know, taking a two hour
break right before the A main justto have a forty five lap hot lap
(09:58):
session and ten lapse race and afterwards. So I don't know, I mean,
they tried something different, so yougot a boat that it just didn't
quite work out. I'm sure they'regoing to take notes. I'm fur they
did take notes. They're going tofigure something out. I wouldn't be surprised
if they maybe even change up theSaturday schedule of events a little bit too,
(10:20):
or even the week's schedule of events, just make it a little less
a load on the track on Saturdayand get a better fifty five lap feature
when it all comes down to youa mat. Yeah, And it wasn't
all night marathon this year either.I mean there's been times in the past,
(10:41):
like you mentioned, they got allthat track prep and it drives it
into the wee hours of the morning. I don't think none of it this
year was like that. Every weekwas every night of the week was done
relatively early, and it wasn't ayou know, there weren't any marathon events.
I mean I was home at beforetwelve thirty in the morning, and
(11:03):
that's with you know, a littleover an hour drive and kind of sketchy
road conditions. So I can't Ican't complain about being home that early.
During the last couple of years,it's probably been twelve thirty Eastern time when
the feature rolls off. So makesmakes life a lot better and a lot
(11:26):
oh that's the word I'm looking for. It makes me a lot happier.
It makes me a less drunk whenit comes Sunday morning. So you mentioned
earlier you were at Speedway or Grillright up in Bradner. Yeah, So
for those who don't know what thatis, tell them, you know what
the event is that you were at. Yeah. So the Dussell family,
(11:48):
Nate Dussell and his dad George andbrothers Craig and Mike. Oh there's another
there's another lot of messing. There'sthere's a lot of Dussels. But one
of their sponsors is Speedways Bar andGrill up in Bradner and they just kind
of post a Chili Bowl party watchparty. They have some raffles, They
(12:09):
do a pizza and wing buffet. The wings are looked like they came off
with pterodactyl is gianormous. Pizza isreally really good. Obviously, they got
a really nice bar raffles fifty tofifty. They drew cards for a TV
and then we did a little bita side betting as well, where I
(12:31):
walked out of the bar with significantlyless money than I walked into the bar
with. But that's all part ofthe fun of it, you know.
We get to just kind of getto hang out watching racing and see some
of the people you don't get tosee too much in the off season.
And yeah, it was a goodtime. Like I said, good food,
good beer, good company, andsome good races. So we really
(12:54):
really can't complain too much about that. So I assume they're going to do
it again and twenty twenty five now. But yeah, if you ever get
the chance to ahead of this Headway'sBar and Brew and Brandon or I would
definitely do it. I think nightis Tuesday night. You better get there
(13:15):
early because I did you see whathappened. It's packed when it comes to
h their wing night, it's prettypopular. I think they go through at
least two hundred pounds of wings aboutevery Tuesday. So but yeah, it's
it's a good time. I highlyrecommend. And uh yeah, that was
(13:35):
That's where I tuned in for.Oh, I think the d names on
for Chili Bowls Saturday. So Ialso so there was somebody was a there
was a chili cookoff contest. Farmerwas at Where? Where was that?
What was that event? Is thatsomething that happens at free Yeah? I
think that was up at pub orone hundred up in Fremont. There.
(13:58):
They've they've done that a couple ofyears. PUB four hundred is pretty pretty
intertwined in the racing community up therein Fremont. They sponsored cars, the
sponsored Oh, I'm pretty sure theysponsored Fremont. And they have a certain
nights throughout the summer where they'll havedrivers bring their cars up and kind of
put them on display for the night. And I think I think it's the
(14:20):
Haven's family that is kind of involvedthere, so A J and Jamie and
all of them. So, yeah, they did a chili cookoff. I
think I must have been rich Chiliefarmer there last year really ran away with
the chili cookoff competition and got hisrecipe band. So I saw. I
(14:43):
was talking about rule changes and hesaid he still won. They won again
this year, right, despite makingrule changes? Is that right? I
don't know. I didn't see anyresults, so I'll have to I have
to go do some research and seewhat I can find. But I mean,
for Chili to have, for Chilito forced rule changes, it must
(15:03):
have been pretty darn good last year. Yeah. I can't think of what
kind of recipe or judging world changes. I don't know. Maybe we'll have
to I'm sure we'll be Hopefully weget the chance to talk to him here
in the next couple of months, because he's got a lot of new stuff
going on. I don't know,it's Rich Farmer man. His his plate's
going to be pretty full, Ishould we should say his chili bowl is
(15:26):
very full with taken over Freemont mothersports education school type thing that they're doing.
And I think he's even a townshiptrustee now on top of everything else
that he does business wise. Sothat guy's that guy's bowl is pretty darnfull.
(15:48):
But yeah, hopefully we get Richon the pretty pretty interesting conversation.
That guy has been around for awhile and he's done seem pretty much every
thing at this point, so thatwould be a good one. Yeah,
lots of lots of changes in theOhio dirt track scene that have happened,
(16:08):
management changes, personnel changes, thingsthat will happen that have happened that I
hope we dig into here over thenext month or so and and really talk
about that. I know, tonightwe really wanted to focus on all the
chili bowl, which is the quickestwrap and and come back and say weird,
(16:33):
we're coming back. Hopefully we'll weget like at least one or two
episodes out of month this year.Jacob and I've talked about it. It
may be maybe one or the otherof us. We may not, just
so we can continue to get youepisodes out when we can't get together,
We're going to try to keep itrolling. And even if we have to
(16:53):
go solo or we have to bringin one of our one of our friends
as again they're you know, justJacob and a driver or me and a
driver. However we do it.We plan and we're planning to kick off
a new twenty twenty four. Lifejust kind of gets busy, you know.
We get into racing season and it'sit's tough to find some time because
(17:15):
the racing season my busy season atwork then too, you know, I
know, you get busy with allyour kids' sports and everything, and your
promotions as on the music side ofthings too. But yeah, it's we
get busy, and some things kindof take the back take on the back
burner. But we'll make some timethis year. We'll get some stuff out
(17:37):
to you. We'll get some racerecaps out of all it as well,
so hopefully I get to do somedifferent stuff when twenty twenty four, I'm
going to kind of be married theattic that you're this mony for before season.
But my saturdays are going to bea little more open. I think
(18:00):
to open up my calendar a littlebit too. There's some certain stuff that
I want to get to. Iwant to do that did a little five
hundred again. I know that's notdirt, it's not in Ohio, but
that was really fine. I wantto I want to make it back to
Winchester, which again it's not dirtOhio. But there's a lot of cool
stuff that I want to do thisyear and hopefully we get to do all
(18:21):
that too. So uh yeah, that's hopefully hopefully another fun year. Yeah,
I'm gonna I've got some plans totry to get out and see some
stuff that I've never seen I did. I haven't been down to Atomic since
we went to the race during COVID. I want to get down there and
see those new facilities. And there'sthere's a lot of stuff, a lot
(18:45):
of stuff happening in Ohio. Uhso, and I want to go over
to Indiana and see some stuff thisyear too, which I had not done.
I haven't been to a single racetrackin Indiana in my entire life,
and I think I'm gonna try tochange that this summer Rich Vocal Classic Sunday,
May fifth, Silver Crown at Winchester. That's a good one. And
(19:07):
then just a few weeks later alittle five hundred there Anderson again. I
think the little five hundred is probablythe primary interest for me a party.
Tell ya, I have never shiedaway from one of those nothing kind of
hanging out there. Oh, Ithink I hung out there and so you
(19:32):
wish in the morning and then stillhad a few hours threeish hours drive hole.
But that was really fun. Alittle five hundred is probably going to
be one of those like can't missevents now for me, sat up top
turn three and four, the biggrand stands, a really sketchy grand stands,
second rope from the top. Thatwas pretty awesome. I gotta get
(19:55):
my hands off some tickets for thatbecause that was won't miss it. That's
one of the differences between you andme is you will drive all the way
back from El Doorra in the middleof the night and I will sleep in
a tent or in the back ofmy van before I get in the car
after a race and drive all night. I just I can't do it.
I would rather just stay there.Well, I do have more space in
(20:18):
my back seat now after I boughta car there last year, so I
have a little more space in myback seat or my back seats pulled down,
and I have some space behind theback seats too, so I could
I could get a sleeping bag there. It'd be a little tramp but I
can make it work. But nowmight save me some driving on might save
(20:41):
me some like slapping myself that I'mdriving home from drinking multiple mountain dews in
the middle of the night and thenjust regretting it the entire next day.
Yeah, that's that's the place tobe the night before the actual Well anything
else about the chili bowl before weride off into the sunset of the second
(21:04):
week of January and Macintosh can't throwa slider to save his life? Yea?
Is that? Is that fair?Is that a fair fair criticism?
I mean, I guess it's Madgetracing, all right. So we're not
(21:26):
far from dirt in February, right, like four three or four weeks four
days until the Outlaws start their seasondown in Belusha. Probably not. It's
a little over a month until thespeedway over in Pennsylvania starts. I know
Attica starts two months from tomorrow, the fifteen March fifteenth. Who's Attica is
(21:49):
opening night Friday night, So we'rein closer if it doesn't. If it
doesn't, snow, I have tosee if we get to race March in
Ohio. Yeah, I hope,so, I certainly hope. So all
right, Well, we'll keep youguys posted on what's going on and on
(22:11):
the social media. Make sure you'refollowing us on Twitter or Facebook if you're
not, and share it when youwhen you see the episode posted, share
it and spread the word out there, and and be kind to your friends.
Let them know that there's a goodpodcast out there that they should listen
to about the Chili Bowl. Hopefully, hopefully, good old Justin Bieler Dirt
(22:32):
Tracker hasn't forgotten about us, andmaybe we'll get a little It's like,
oh my god, I was thinkingabout that the other day. I was
like, Justin's probably taken us offof his main page because we haven't posted
a podcast in six months or somethinglike that. So detail all right,
(22:52):
cool, It's it's good to talkto you and be back on the air.
So I will I'll plan on seeingyou again here in the next week
or so and we'll get another episodeout. Sounds good to me, all
right, Coop. Until then, thank you guys for tuning in Sharre with
all your social media outlets and helpus spread the word. And until next
time, get out, get dirty, support your local tracks.
