The journey into the round of thestrange and get a bye. I hope
you will enjoy the table that itwill trill you a little and kill you
a little. So settle back, get a good grip on your nerve.
Where are we going? You'll findout when we get there. Well,
(00:28):
greetings, everybody, welcome back tothe show. Got a good one for
you today from the CBS Radio MysteryTheater. The title of this one is
The Pharaoh's Curse, and this oneaired April second of nineteen seventy four.
Enjoy, come in, Welcome.I'm e. G. Marshall. Welcome
(01:14):
to the world of terrifying imagination. To the fear you can hear. For
the four centuries before Christ, aremarkable combination of priests and monarchs established one
of the most astonishing cultures in theworld. The rulers were the Pharaohs of
Egypt, and they left an enduringseries of monuments behind them, the Sphinx,
(01:41):
the Pyramids, the temples of Karnakand Luxor, and most strange of
all, their mummified remains, embombedby a process lost to modern science.
This is the story of one suchmummy and the eternal Curse. She left
to be visited on any violator ofher tomb. Our mystery drama The Pharaoh's
(02:15):
Curse was written especially for the mysterytheater by Ian Martin and stars Kim Hunter
nineteen twenty four, fifty years ago. Belongs to another world, certainly in
(02:38):
the Middle East, almost midway throughthe period of the great archaeological excavations that
make Egypt a mecca for tourists fromall over the world. And in that
era, no singer and entertainer reignedmore supreme than Diane Elliott, the toast
of two continents already and now inthe process of conquering a third with an
(03:00):
engagement at Shepherd's world famous hotel inKiro. You gonna sing again this year?
No? Really, five on pointsis enough. There's never enough with
you Aska for anyone. It's alreadytoo much because you must be tired.
(03:22):
No, but I don't want theaudience today. If you'll excerience men,
Would you excuse me first? Thatis an old friend of mine here tonight,
who would Betty much like to meetyou? Could I presume to ask
if you would join him as heasked for the drink at his table?
Or who is this friend of yours, Sir Jeffrey Lunscombe, the famous archaeologist.
(03:43):
Were he's still alive? I meanhe's quite told, but most active.
Would you ask him to give meten minutes and then come back to
my dressing room just a moment,Come in, miss enious, said Jeffrey,
(04:12):
guilty as charged. Oh dear, did I sound forbidding or something?
You're not at all. It's justthat I feel i'm intruding. Oh,
not at all. I hope you'llexcuse me though. I've started changing because
tonight's the end of my engagement hereand I have to start packing. Then
you'll be leaving Cairo. Well,no, no, not for a few
days, I hope at least aweek. I've wangled a little gap between
(04:35):
engagements because I want to do somesights. Good, good, excellent.
It makes it so much easier forme to ask when I want to ask.
It's amazing what you, my dear, with your robe pulled tightly around
you and your hair swept back soseverely from your face. Yeah, yes,
(05:01):
absolutely amazing. Oh well, Ilet me here tell you why I
am here. Have you ever heardof the Princess hassiebah? No, but
it's not too surprising. She wasto understand a little before your time,
approximately four thousand years Hassiebai gazeld footedtrailer of perfumed musque, Hassiba, the
(05:30):
dough eyed, radiant, perfection ofher three worlds. I thought you were
an archaeologist, not a poet.Well not I, my dear. That
Sir taught me is the fifth herhusband, the Pharaoh, And he was
right. She was until then atleast the most exquisite woman who ever lived.
(05:50):
Once she died at nineteen, thepharaoh was so crazed with grief that
he stripped himself from all his wealthand turned into jewels with which he filled
her burial caskets to the brim. She was buried with all the honors of
a pharaoh, and the door toher, Miss Stabber, sealed forever with
(06:12):
an undying curse. The year MissStabbor. The burial chamber, and the
curse. This chamber holds the jewelsof my kingdom, jewels beyond number and
one beyond all price. Who breaksthis seal forever seals his doom. He
will walk no more among the living, or find his way among the dead.
(06:41):
You almost made me believe that.I almost believe it myself. That's
that's why I've taken the liberty ofcoming to you. I don't understand,
Oh why should you? Let meexplain. Fifteen years ago I discovered the
small pyramid that covers the best realchamber. Three times on different expeditions,
(07:02):
we have excavated with no success. This time we have managed to isolate the
mess Taba itself in spite of everykind of miserable luck Kevin's men injured cruise
desserting. But at last, withinthe next few days, I'm convinced the
(07:23):
entrance will be found. Oh exciting, how wonderful for you and Hassiba.
I hope she isn't a disappointment. Was she really so beautiful? Do you
think? Incredibly? Her face shamedthe shining sun, and the day was
lit up by the light of hercountenance. You know you sound as though
(07:46):
you'd actually seen her. I haveyou have? Oh yes, yes,
my dear, for every description fitsyou well. Jeffery, I'll have to
admit that's about the prettiest compliment I'veever been paid. And the truth.
(08:07):
Look, look what is it?And ivery miniature of Hassiba hand carved?
How beautiful X question. Isn't thisPerhaps now you can see, Miss Elliott,
why I can easily believe in reincarnation. It's why I asked to meet
you. I've devoted the last bestpart of my life to unearthing this tomb
(08:31):
that I've come to be afraid ofa curse and to believe profoundly in the
power of good omens and luck.I need that luck and I think I've
found it. I know you aremy luck. Well, how can I
help you come as my guest tothe Diggings for a few days? Open
(08:52):
the chamber for me? I thinkyour touch will ensure success. Out of
so many, that's the greatest complimentof all. How can I refuse just
(09:16):
a moment? Oh, driver,a good come in now all I'm taking
these two bags and you are notthe driver I engaged this morning. No,
miss Elliot? And why hello me? My credentials in spector, I
(09:37):
said the Guido police Police. Ifyou doubt me, Golashman, he will
vouch for me. M Now,may I ask a few questions? Well,
of course you had never met SirJeffrey Lunscombe before the night before last.
(09:58):
Oh that's correct, But you areplanning to visit the Diggings. Yes,
why because he invited me to,just as a guest, of course,
for a few days. Correct.Well, now let's not make anything
out of that, Inspector, heis about to open the tomb of some
(10:20):
ancient Egyptian queen and I am intrigued. I've never had the opportunity to meet
a four thousand year old princess who'ssupposed to look like me. Now,
what's wrong with that? And whyshould it interest the police? This thing
is difficult. First of all,let me warn you that there may be
(10:41):
a possible danger in your visit tothe Diggings. What danger I do not
know exactly. But if you areto go, will you let me go
with you as your driver incognito? Why? Partially to protect you and partially
what else? That is what Iwant to find out. Do you have
(11:05):
any knowledge of firearms? Miss Elliott? As a matter of fact, I
do. I used to do alot of hunting with my father and small
arms. We are pistol range.I'm a pretty good shot. Oh could
you handle this if you had to? For protectionally? I mean, oh
(11:26):
what player? Isn't it six clip? It would fit a woman's handbag okay,
okay, but I'm not interested inrunning around playing with guns. Last
night at the diggings there was aaccident not not so different. No no,
no, no, one of thenew digging crew. Now, for
(11:50):
everyone's safety, I need an opportunityto investigate that accident quietly, without publicity.
You could offer me that chance andput my own neck on the line.
There's little risk for you, Butof course I cannot tell you there
is absolutely none. What is ityou think's going on out I am not
(12:13):
sure. Four thousand years ago,if we are to believe the papyrus,
they written records dot miss buried withhis wife uncounted millions of dollars in jewels.
But neither she nor the jewels havebeen exhumed, yet, we are
told, And yet the man isdead. Where was this man found near
(12:39):
one of the many statues that dringthe pyramid, far from the tomb itself?
So what has that to do withmurdered? Not by any human agency.
Apparently the man was crushed, asif broken in the arms of a
something beyond the nature power of things. However, the police are less interested
(13:05):
in the man himself than what wasclutched in his hand. What. I
have been selected to investigate this matterquietly and anonymously. Will you let me
go with you? You're kind ofdaring me, aren't you. Pardon you
(13:26):
don't want me to refuse. Idon't think you are in any real danger,
miss Elliot, and I need theair cover. Okay, let's go,
adventure. Just tell me one thingfirst. What is there for the
police to investigate? What was itthe man had clutched in his hand a
(13:48):
diamond of great beauty and great price? What kind of diamond? There's just
the whole point, miss Elliot.A very special kind for loud diamond has
been cut like this in the lastfour thousand years. A tomb sealed fast
(14:13):
for four thousand years, or aprincess lies in a coffin filled to the
brim with precious stones of incalculable value. Could this diamond be from a tomb
as yet uncovered or was it somerandom discovery? And if it were,
what in human agency, with apower beyond all human scope, mangled and
(14:37):
destroyed the unfortunate man who found thestrangely cut diamond a return in a few
moments, Were that too? Southwestand Cairo riding across the hot white desert
(15:03):
sands and the jeep driven by InspectorHassid, A tool scarf bound across her
mouth and nose against the stinging sand. Diana Elliott wonders what quim drove her
to this strange adventure, and thento herself. Honestly, she admits what
it is. She is tired ofthe never relaxing discipline of her life,
(15:26):
the touring, the center of applause, the sense of being trapped. Suddenly
she is a free soul, offon an uncharted adventure, ready for anything
that comes her way, as longas it is new and different. As
(15:46):
eliot, you know me, Yes, you more than live up to what
I've heard. Can I give youa hand down? Thank you? Ah,
that's more than a hand brother. The old boy was right about what
you and our four thousand year oldlady perhaps, But I'm not four thousand
(16:12):
years old yet, and I canstand by myself. Mister Irving, John
Irving, I'm Sir Jeff's assistant. He asked me to look out for you.
Oh great. Could we start byhaving you let go of my waist
so I can breathe? I'm sorry, where's the Jeffrey? He had to
go into Cairo with the English mailand in connection with an accident we had
(16:33):
here. Oh yes I know aboutthat, you do, Yes, yes,
I read about it in a Caironewspaper. Oh well, let's get
your bags and get you settled. That's what I say. I let's take
it in a fine driver. MissElliot's going to the big tent with a
canopy. You can bunk down withthe crew over there, any one of
the three tents near the diggings.Very good, I say, you want
(16:56):
to go freshen up, miss Elliot? I know, no, everything's too
new and strange and exciting. Iwant to explore. Okay, you want
to walk over and have a closerlook at the pyramid. I loved it.
If I'm not keeping, you're not. I've been designated as the official
reception committee for the afternoon. Tellme have you found the tomb yet?
(17:19):
And not quite, but we're close. We started to uncover what appears to
be the entrance to the outer chamberthis morning. The diggers are working on
claring that now it's targeibly, we'realmost there. Fifteen years ago, this
entire pyramid was buried in sand.Sir Jeff uncovered it on the two former
(17:41):
expeditions. What a tremendous job. What are these statues that stand along the
bottom row of stones? Those arevarious Egyptian god don't see starting at that
end, Taught the recorder, Aurus, god of truth, mocked got Us
of Justice, and Osiris the kingfather himself true tree. You missed one,
(18:08):
this one in the middle. I'msorry so I did. How I
blame you? He so ugly, fruitful, snarling face. What does he
represent? That's Anubis, the jackalfaced god. Officially he supposed coincidentally enough
to be the Greeter of the dead. And I think I care to be
(18:32):
greeted by that dead or alive? What do you mean coincidentally? Well,
this is where it where an accidenthappened. You mean where the man was
killed? You heard about that?Who told you? Said? Jah,
No, it was my driver.Oh, bad news travels fast in this
(18:52):
country, in any country. Whata cruel bestraffics he has? What does
Greeter the Dead mean? He weighedthe hearts of the dead before welcoming them
to the great halls of Osiris, the Judge and the Sentencer. Oh he's
not quite as bad as he looks. Do tell I think I'll have that
(19:17):
hand down now here you are, watch it, we are the statue.
You all right, Diane, I'mall right, mister Irnie. Well couldn't
we make it? John? Icalled you, Diane? So you did?
(19:42):
He just slipped out? Did itscare you? If you mean the
explosion? Of course it did dynamite? What was the dynamite for John?
That's just what sir Jeff's gonna wantto know. He's gonna be opping mad
when he gets back. Damn. That's Sargon? Who is? Who is
Sargon, our esteemed Egyptian colleague andso called archaeologist who's been coming up this
(20:10):
expedition ever since it started coming itup? He resents all outsiders who come
here on what he considers his territory. Well, you can't blame him.
I suppose it's his country, butjust the same, a guy's pretty hard
to take. For some reason,he wants that tomb to remain sealed with
that dynamite he set off. Maybehe's just gotten his wish to come on,
(20:33):
I'll see you back to your tentsso I can go find out just
what damage has been done. Mydear miss Elliot, I'm sorry I was
responsible for making dinner so late.Oh, it was worth waiting for Sir
Jeffrey. This's Arabian coffee is delicious. What was all the trouble with Sagon
(20:57):
this afternoon? This morning? Hewanted to dynamite the entrance open. I
said we should wait till you gotback. I knew you wouldn't go for
it. My god, if wehad a cave in, the whole tomb
would have been reburied, say nothingof the possible damage to inscriptions inside.
So well, he got so rednecked about it. I told him he
(21:18):
could set the charges in case. That was foolish. I know, sir,
but I never thought he'd be pigheadedenough to set them off on his
own hook that he said. Ioh, Sagan, Sagan, my dear
fellow, come in, Come injoin us in coffee. I do not
break bread among my enemies, butwith the Interidad now weighed on me.
(21:38):
Now, now, Sagan, Iknow you you're upset, but there's no
need to be rude. I don'tbelieve you've met our guest, Miss Diane
Eliot ali Atman Ben Sagan, oneof our most noted Egyptologists. How do
you do yourself up? And ISai. Now about this thing, mister
(22:00):
Irvine said, the otters came fromyou. Why if he denies that,
you think I'm going to sit stilla saw, Sir, I will not
have this bickering in front of aguest. It can be settled later in
the meantime. Fortunately, there's beenno damage of consequence on the way into
the tomb. As ven opens,no harm has been done. A great
(22:22):
deed of harm has been done. The crew has deserted. What it is
what I came to tell you. They have taken all our transport and left.
I tried to stop them. Betyou did, now, look,
sir, Jeff asked us just amoment, John, Oh, why Sagan.
Perhaps they are wiser than we.A small hole was blown through to
(22:45):
the inside, and out of itthey say, come swearing a fearsome ethlete
that grew ten times taller than aman and benched a cold, freezing breath
from his mouth that carried death inthe air. They are an in terror
from the ancient courts. They dothis stench of evil in the air.
(23:07):
But that's that's preposterous. There's anarchaeologist, you know. The petted odor
of debt is always present. Whenthe tomb is opened. Bunch of simple
minded knitwits, perhaps, except thatus is simple minded Egyptian. I agree
with them, or you intenderly,I intend to stay. I was referring
(23:32):
to the stench of evil, andnot from the graves of my ancestors,
which I shall remain to protect. Why that's son of them? Even to
let him get away without John,I'm sure it was a misunderstanding. To
bear with me. Please, tomorrowmay be the end of a long long
dream, and let me go andpacify poor Sagan. You intend to open
(23:56):
the tomb tomorrow. The main breachhas been made. I'm hopeful it can
be managed. Well, then wemust have the press here. I'll go
into Cairo tonight. The men havetaken the trucks. There's still Diane's jeep
if I may borrow it. Well, it's not really mine, it's my
driver. Well, whatever you decide, tomorrow will be an exciting day.
(24:18):
I sure hope Miss Elliott, tointroduce you at last, your long dead
image. This must come to passwhere I still believe in you as my
good luck. John. You'll seeMiss Elliott to her attempt, of course
you'll tomorrow. Then good night, sir, I'd still like to have it
out myself with that surly let saidJeff, handle it John, I want
(24:44):
to drink him. This strange night, the atmosphere or the general excitements both
everything, air, the place, the time. An enormous red moon.
What makes it like that? Sandsuspended in the air filters the spectrum.
(25:11):
Such a lot of sand. It'sa whole lot of moon. So quiet,
Hm, the air is heavy, sleepy. No, don't go in
stay with me. That might bereally dangerous. Why don't we grab the
(25:36):
jeep going to Cairo? We can'tuse the jeep? Why not? It
belongs to to an inspector of police. Look, please don't say I said
anything, but he's here investigating theaccident. Some rosa. You won't tell
anyone for sure if you ask menot to. But I still don't see
(25:56):
why we can ask Inspector Hussid ifyou can borrow the cheap. But I
won't go with you. I'm tootired and I'm too excited looking forward to
tomorrow. I'm funny how heavy theair seems. I can imagine why those
men felt a dark weight, almostlike death in the air. I'll be
(26:19):
glad to see tomorrow. Good night, John, Good night Diane ian Ian.
(26:40):
What is it? Are you dressed? Can I come into your tenth
Yes, I'm just starting to goto bed. What is it? Look?
I don't want to alarm you,but the men were right. There
is death in the air tonight.Well what now? Oh, it's nothing
to do with the legend. Totallyatmospheric womb is on its way. Let
(27:00):
us race it back to Cairo. But the tomb jomb can wait, as
it has waited for centuries. Butthere won't be room in the cheap for
all of us, or you andI are going and the others. Sir
Jeff and Sargon won't leave the tomb. Inspector Hassid won't leave Sargon and remains
to protect Sir Jeff. What doesthat mean? Sargon is not to be
(27:22):
trusted. Sir Jeff and the inspectorknow that. But if we have to
run for safety, what about them? They'll be safe in the excavation.
It's like a tornado. Seller,That's just what this blow will be like.
Anyways, said, why can't wehold up with them? We could
if you think you can spare thetime. What does that mean? Asimu?
(27:45):
It could blow itself out in sixor seven hours or six or seven
days. Now, can you sparethe time? Of course not. I'm
due in Paris in three days.Give me five minutes and I'll get my
suitcases ready and we'll be on ourIt's getting worse, isn't it. Come
(28:12):
find the Cairo. We're not evennearly halfway. Can you see what's to
see? What? Sand? Sandand bar sand? John? John?
What that? Damn? The twisteritself double right around on us? What
are you doing? We can't hititway was we suck us right up into
(28:34):
the land of odds all the Arabiannights. We've got to run for cover
way acting the diggings the only shoulder. Just hold your seat to hope we
get out run this? How canwe can't? Baby? This is one
archaeologist who doesn't live in the past, and it's very interested in the future.
Right here and now, we've gotto hang under the present. Whatever
(29:00):
the effectiveness of the ancient curse,it seems the fates inspire to bring Diane
Elliott and John Irving back within itsrange. And if the four thousand years
sleep of the Delectable Hassibah is tobe disturbed at last? On whom will
the curse fall for disturbing it?On the men who planned and made it
(29:22):
possible, or on another woman whodared to challenge her beauty. I'll return
shortly with Act three. In theouter chamber, shielded from the wild gust
(29:48):
and the roar of the simoon ragingoutside, Sir Jeoffrey and Sardon have isolated
and almost cleared the door to themastaba itself. They are engaged now in
cleaning. Did to breathe the explosionearlier in the day it caused? Yeah,
it does it the door, thedoor is free fifteen years and the
(30:14):
moment he is here at last,I am about to enter the tomb of
Hasiba. My companymen have waited fourthousand to come. Come Surgan, But
for God's sat nodded, He's submitted. What is it? There's someone coming?
He did that. He is it. But it'll be sillier from the
(30:37):
outside, where it's miss Eliot, the bad Penney and companion turning up again.
Well, what happens? Good?Make it sir? We just beat
that old twister back here to safety, turned around on us, just the
two off you. Yes, whathappened to your driver. We understood he
stayed with you. We have notseen him. We thought he stayed with
(31:00):
you, or he probably took offwith the rest of the crew. Are
you all right, miss Elliot's yes, well, emits forget the elements,
the momentary, inconveniences and everything, but the incredible, the marvelous, the
unbelievable moment that lies ahead of us. We're about the ends of the tomb
(31:23):
of Hassiba, but the storm stormwill blow itself house. We are lighting
candles to illuminate sensories of the past. Come, John Sagan, help me
push open the door. I donot care to see the tomb opened.
(31:44):
I am not, sir, praiseyes, miss Elliott, Inspector yes,
aliasman Benzaragan, Inspector Hassid with avery short head, where someone knocked me
out to deny me the sight ofthe tomb and content by all means,
let us open the door. Iam not asking, but commanding with this
(32:07):
gun, Let's go, Sargan. There it is beyond that black aperture lies
Hassiba wrapped in her blanket of jewels. Who should be first to enter?
(32:29):
All right? Is my head light? Is said Jeffy. Don't make me
use my gun. This is amoment I dread as much as I desire.
Who knows what lies in that darkcave. The tomb may have been
rifled centuries ago, its artifacts destroyed, the very catafalque itself landalized. The
(32:52):
curse was never idle. And thensuddenly I am too old and afraid to
enter. Diane. I brought youhere as my luck. Will you risk
it and enter first? If youwish me to, I wish it with
(33:14):
all my eyes. John, takethe torch and light her in. Yesler,
careful, Diane easy? What isthat? A fear who knows the
dead resent intruders? And I onlyhope that many What happened? John?
(33:44):
The door to the tomb swung shut? Which time are you opening? No?
The counterweights locked it somehow? Holdup, George. Why there's an
inscription inside the door? What didit say it? But it would take
time to decipher it. Don't worry. I can guess. He who breaks
(34:09):
this seal forever seals his doom.He will walk no more among the living,
or find his way among the dead. It's just what I was,
A biter, helpless. The dogcan't be budged. What happened for stone,
(34:36):
You stepped on design, trip thecounterbalancing rocks and lock them to get
the door open. Now they'll haveto blast say that talk with ancientekers.
It's pretty effective. Hold up thetorch, John had better. Yes,
it's not a very large chamber, and sell her there is that? That's
(35:01):
the cut about a siba? Canwe look? Why not? Poor little
princess, poor little rich girl?So young? Can we can we open
the sarcophagus? I don't know.Somewhere there should be let's see. Ah
(35:29):
here it too heavy, as faras I dare slight it. Such a
big coffin for such a little girl. Oh but she is lovely. The
faces is only a dead mask.Where the jewels, John, the jewels
(35:51):
that filled the casket to the brim? That's right. Evidently Old Toughness regretted
his generous impulse and sneaked in laterand pinched his fabulous fortune. How I
don't know what's the matter with thetorch. I'm afraid it's going out.
We can't we light it again? No lack of oxygen. We've got to
(36:16):
get out of here. Haven't youany idea how the catafalque itself let's have
a look. But how where it'skept a simple box except here at the
foot of it, carved in barrelief. Wait, let me hold the
torch close. Yeah, that's better. What is it that face the gods
(36:40):
you showed me outside the pyramid withthe jackal face? What's his name?
A NUIs greeter of the dead. But he has another name, the opener
of the ways. Diane. Maybethis is it press it tis, yes,
(37:01):
a smell at the fresh air.Look at the torch, light up
and there are steps beneath. We'refree. I wonder, John, I
wonder. I can see it clearlynow, Diane. Sargon he's been plundering
(37:29):
the tomb. That was the reasonfor all the delays he caused. He
had to have time to get ridof the jewels. And now unless we
escape somehow, he's safe. InspectorHussid won't let him go. We might
as well have all the cards onthe table. When I stumbled into you
entering the chamber, it was becauseSargon pushed the inspector against me and grab
(37:49):
the gun. You can be sureit's or. Jeffrey and Hassid are both
dead by now, and Sargon ison his way to freedom with the jewels.
Well, then it's up to usto stop him. How what's the
matter the black wall? This lookslike the end of the road. It
does at that. How do weget out of this? It's all up
(38:14):
to you, John, What doesthat mean? It's not very difficult to
figure out. You know just whereto put your hand to move this rock,
don't you, John? I whyshould I? Because you've been here
so often before, you know,I think so. And what I don't
(38:42):
know? I can guess you've foundthis secret entrance some time ago, and
you stole the jewels, didn't you. You've been the one that's been delaying
things while you try to figure outsome way to get away with them.
My jeep with me is cover withthe perfect way out if it hadn't been
for the sandstorm, all right,I admit it, which leaves you with
(39:10):
two choices, which are stay hereor come with me. Diane, I
am more than a little in lovewith you, and I promise you there's
a fortune packed in your jeep thatcould make us able to live like Totmas
and his Queen hasiba. In yourluggage, it could easily be smuggled out
(39:30):
of the country half of it.All of it yours if you share it
with me, and if I don't, I'll have to take my chances alone,
