mild mannered Clark Kent, reporter for the Daily Planet, a
great metropolitan newspaper. As our story opens today, Clark Ken
is about to leave the Daily Planet building when he
is hailed by young Jimmy Olsen, the redheaded, freckle face
coffee boy who worked in the editorial department of the paper.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Listen, can can I see him in her power?
Speaker 1 (03:11):
What you mean, I'm all on fire?
Speaker 6 (03:13):
No, it's nothing to do with the paper, mister Kenny.
It's well, it's sort of personal. If you're in a
hurry and you haven't got time all the.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
Time in the world, youream I run it as the
white doc. She's gone for today. Hey, now we can
talk about having to shot over the record of those
typewriters and news tickets.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Oh, it's on your mind, Jimmy worried. I am worried,
mister kid.
Speaker 7 (03:35):
It's about my mother.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
She's sick, Tommy.
Speaker 7 (03:37):
No, she's all right. At least she's all right.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Now, what do you mean?
Speaker 6 (03:41):
I guess i'd better start from the virginning so you'll
know what it's all about, all right. You see, my
father owned a candy store on spoo Steel Huh. When
he died three years ago, my mother went to work
in the store and.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Kept it running. Could he do it all by herself?
Speaker 7 (03:53):
And yes, but she doesn't complain.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Not Mom.
Speaker 7 (03:56):
She wouldn't have even told me about Jad Nelly if
I hadn't caught her.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
Crime, Chip Donnelly, the racketeer. Once you got to do
with your mother in the candy store, I'll tell.
Speaker 7 (04:05):
You, mister Kent.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
About a month ago a man came into the store
and told my mother that unless she paid twenty dollars
a week protection.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Money to Chip Donnelly, the store might be wrecked. What
and has she paid him? Yes, sir, one.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
Hundred dollars so far, and he's coming tonight for another twenty.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Jimmy, are you sure Dannelly is behind this. Absolutely ours
isn't the only story.
Speaker 6 (04:27):
He's taking money from him. All the store is on
Spruce be pay. The guy who comes around is just
Dannelly's collector.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Say you'll be there tonight. Yes, that's why I wanted to.
Speaker 7 (04:37):
Talk to you.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Mom can't pay anyone, and why should she. This is
a free country, mister Kent, and no crook's.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Got a write down on I'll take it easy, Jimmy.
I don't fix mister Donnelly. I'll get out of the
store with you and meet his collective. See, mister Kent,
would you sure? But remember Jimmy had a worry about this.
To anyone that's like Donnelly must be handled privately. I
got to have no time away.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
See thanks, mister Kent. I'll see you the elevator.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
Ten minutes later, Jimmy and Ken approached the candy store
around Spruce Street.
Speaker 7 (05:16):
This is the store, mister Kent. Mom's behind the counter.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
And wait a minute, Jimmy, if they all the stores
on the street may protection money to Donelly.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
That's right, shoots.
Speaker 6 (05:25):
The butcher didn't pay last week all so he got
a brick thrown through his window.
Speaker 7 (05:29):
See it might have.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
Crossed the street. Yes, there is not much window left.
And what did the police do about it? They couldn't
do anything, they said, no evidence. My mother can tell you.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
More about that. Come on, let's go weak, all right? Oh,
what make nate Jimmy?
Speaker 6 (05:44):
I hung around the office for a while. Mom, This
is mister Kent. He's the best reporter on the Daily Planet.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
I'm afraid Jimmy's given to exaggeration, Miss Awesome. Well, he
tells me a lot about you, mister Ken. You're a
wonderful nice to know that somebody does. Mom.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
I told mister King about Jip to Nelly and the
racket he's pulling.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Jimmy, you shouldn't.
Speaker 7 (06:05):
You promised you wouldn't mention it to us.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
It's quite all right, Missus Olson. I want to help you.
Oh you can't help me. Nobody can.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
The only one thing left for me.
Speaker 7 (06:14):
To do give up the store.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
Oh I won't want you to do that, Mom, I'll
go to gyp Denelly myself.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
I'll tell you Jimmy, you won't have to give up
the store.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Missus Olson.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
I've been up against men like Dannelly before, and I
think I know how.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
To handle them.
Speaker 5 (06:28):
I understand his collector is coming tonight or what time
does usually arrived.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
I should be here any minute now, oh said mister Ken.
Speaker 7 (06:36):
Now, please don't start any trouble, they said.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
I know what they said, missus Olson, But don't you worry.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Jimmy and I will hide behind the counter when the
collector comes in refuse to pay it.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Oh no, no, I can't do that. He'll do something
to Jimmy if I.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
Don't think, they won't do a thing. I promise you
just you refuse to give him the twenty dollars. I
don't take care of the rest, all right, Jimmy, duck down.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
What are you going to do?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Mister Kent, tell mister Dannelly's collector where he gains. But
of course he pulls a gun. Our guns don't frighten me.
I mean, well, he won't pull it on Jimmy.
Speaker 7 (07:07):
Here he comes down, mister Camp's this is awesome. Don't
be afraid.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
Okay, lady, I'll take the protection payment.
Speaker 5 (07:16):

you anymore. Oh no, take a look across the street, lady.

it fast. This is my last step and I ain't
got no kind of waste. And you'd better find some
time because I want.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
To talk to you where you come from behind the counter.
I heard everything you said, and so that missus Olson's son.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Unless you win, your crooked boss Danelli want to spend
some time behind bars for extortion and blackmail. You will
return every penny you took from this woman and never
bother her again.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Oh yeah, who are you?
Speaker 5 (07:58):

the Daily Planner, a star reporter too. You so you're

thought he's not young.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Not quite. Oh you see, mister Kent, I told you
not to try to do anything. It's impossible.
Speaker 7 (08:35):

the jaw.

a gag? Nobody here? Oh, yes, there is, Donelly. I
just thought i'd wait for you in the closet. Hey,
(11:04):
somebody trying to kid me strikes at. A reporter was waiting,
not a guy on a circus outfit. Blark Ken couldn't wait,
so he asked me to keep the appointments. You'll get
used to these blue tights and red cap if you
keep on rubbing boy shopkeepers.

be unable to stop, something that may result an injury
to missus Olson or Jimmy. Even now Gift and Ellis,
two henchmen are speeding the Spruce Street in a high
hard car where they plan to wait in the darkness,
ready to strike. And where is Superman. Don't miss the
(13:25):
next drill packed episode. Tune in and follow the exciting
story of Superman.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Up in the sky. It's a bird, It's the pain,
It's Superman.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Superman is a copyrighted feature of Hearing in Action Comics Magazine.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
All right, everybody, welcome back. Well a few things here.
First off, I love at the beginning where we have
our very first introduction of the Jimmy Olsen character and
he's introduced as a red headed, freckled copyboy or something
like that, and that is our very first description of
(14:15):
the Jimmy Olsen character. And I also love how when
he asks Clark for help Clark is not too busy
and has to turn him away, but he he's making
time for Jimmy, and that just really shows how Clark,
even in his Clark Kent persona, really does his best
or tries his best to make time to help the
(14:37):
people that are in his life, and you know, really
speaks to the character of the Superman slash Clark Kent't character.
And what's really interesting too. On another note, is that
the money that Danelli was taking from the candy store
(15:02):
was said to be twenty dollars a week. Now, twenty
dollars back in nineteen forty, given inflation, is roughly equivalent
to about three hundred and fifty dollars or so today now.
If they were paying that per week, and Jimmy Olsen
said they were, that comes out to about almost fifteen
(15:25):
hundred dollars in today's terms given inflation. That is a
lot of money for a small business to be having
to fork out every month, and especially given that it's
a candy store. And I can't really imagine a candy
(15:48):
store actually making that much money to begin with, so
I felt that was very interesting. Another thing that's interesting
is there's a mentioning that they can't arrest Danelly because
there's no proof, there's no evidence, And I was thinking, well,
(16:08):
in today's times, you would have security footage, and so
if Danelly and his hoodlums wanted to throw a rock
through the window or something, they could actually capture that
on camera and use that as evidence. But obviously back
then they didn't have that. I also love that quip
made by Clark Kent where he's speaking to Jimmy Olsen
(16:31):
and he's like, oh, guns don't frighten me. And I
was like, yeah, I bet they don't. You know, they
wouldn't frighten me either if like I was Superman. But anyways,
and we also have Superman there bouncing Danelly around the room.
(16:52):
That was just the way apparently that he handled the
bad guys in this era of the Golden Age. He
just bounces them off the walls. And so he goes
in there and he roughs up Danelly, and he demands
the money to be given back and warns Danelly to
stop stealing from the stores, and specifically Jimmy Olsen's mom store.
(17:18):
And it looks like Danelly is out to get revenge
on Jimmy Olsen and his mom for tattling on them
and getting Dannelly in hot water, and so this whole
thing could possibly backfire on Clark Kent. I guess we'll
have to see, all right, everybody, we are going to
(17:41):
take a quick break and then we'll be right back
with Part two of Donelly's protection Racket. Okay, so let's
go ahead and get into Part two of Dannelly's Protection Racket.
This one aired April seventeenth of nineteen forty in Joy.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
And Now Superman, mighty visitor from the destroyed planet Krypton,
whose strength no limits, more powerful than a locomotive paster
than a speeding bullet, Superman who has pledged himself to
devote his life to helping the week and needy to
fight for truth and justice. Superman who in his everyday
(18:26):
guys is Miles Clark Kent, reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
When we last saw Superman, he.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Was waging a one man war against Gyp Dannelly, a
petty racketeer who has been collecting weekly protection payments from
the small shopkeepers. Among them was Missus Olsen, the mother
of Jimmy Olsen, a Daily Planet copy boy, tracking Donnelly
to his hideout, Superman gave him a thrashing and got
from him the one hundred and twenty dollars missus Olson
had painted collector, warning the racketeer that if he tried
(18:57):
his racket again, worse would happen. But the moment Superman left,
Dannelly sought revenge and sent two of his henchmen to
missus Olson's candy store. Meanwhile, unaware of Superman's visitor to
Nelly's hangout, Jimmy and his mother are still in the store.
Speaker 9 (19:15):
Missus Olsen is crying softly. Listen, Oh mom, please don't cry.
The only reason I told mister Kent about it was
so that you wouldn't have to pay that cook to
Nelly twenty dollars a week.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
Please, Mom, No, Jimmy, you shouldn't have told anyone. I'm
picked up.
Speaker 9 (19:33):
How did I know Clark Kent was going to just
stand there and let that collector knock him down. I
thought he could fight.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
No fight, He will only make matters worse. There's only
one thing left for me to do. Close up the store. Mom.
Speaker 9 (19:47):
Look, he's coming across the street. Who Jimmy, mister Kent. Look,
and you probably didn't expect me back to judge. Mister Kent,
I don't want to appear ungrateful.
Speaker 5 (20:00):
No, you mean well, but I don't want you any
trouble with those gangsters. Oh please, don't stir up trouble.
I'm not stirring up anything, missus Olson. I just have
some good news. Here's one hundred and twenty dollars then
always Collector took from you, and I don't think he'll
bother you again. You can't jump in, Jimmy now.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
The next thing to do is to expose Dannelly on
the front page of the Daily Planet, and if possible,
run him out of the city. Mister can't twit. Did
you get this money?
Speaker 5 (20:25):
I'll never mind where I got it. It's yours every
penny else. Did you get it from Dannelly? Jimmy, a
good newspaper.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
Man never revealed secrets. You did get it from Dannelly.
Mister can't use Superman hardly, Jimmy, not Superman. Why, mister Kidder,
we can't believe it.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
Seems I could dream get the money back, and you
say they won't bother me anymore.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
What that means I can keep the stores?
Speaker 5 (20:50):
Just what it means I like us I'll run along now,
get done right early in the morning. Jimmy, you can
help me write the story.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
We'll splash it across the front page.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
I sure will.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Mister Cammer right, good night, you can't. Oh, thank you
so much.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
And I was an a.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
Buddy.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
Even as clark Can departs, a black sedan pulls up
up the curb opposite missus Olson's little candy stor. Okay,
Tony cut them on right, not the place bike. Yeah,
we're lucky they're still there. The kid is old lady.
What time is it?
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Nine? And they be closing up soon.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
Now.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Now listen, what we do is this.
Speaker 5 (21:32):
When they come out, we follow them. You see, there's
too many lights on this street. Where we follow them toe,
they'll turn in on a side street where it's darker.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
What are you going to do? Get out of the
car and follow them, shep said the teacher. But don't
pay the squeale. I don't like food o with the kids,
and James and me neither.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
But they got to come and toe tip it over,
report it they look, they're putting out the lights. See
they're closing up.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
Keep low, Yeah, they're coming out the store.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
Be sure that's them. Yeah, the kid's right at it.
I let him get a block ahead of us. Okay,
keep an eye peel for copspike.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
Yeah, come on, let's god, that's so fast. I said
to keep a block behind.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
All right, all right, you know I think it's so gitry.
Wait a minute. Turn in the second street. That block
is plenty dark, easy, easy. Then they are up ahead
on the left side the street.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
All right now they winn sht not shit spike, So
please talk coming up all right?
Speaker 4 (22:40):
Think of the story shop.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
Oh where I should have taught them? Bulls met a
pinch bike? No, jitry, Hey, where's the kids? All lady,
come on, let's get going. I see him in the
middle of the block.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
Come on now, hey, you.
Speaker 5 (23:08):
Until I teach your old ladies something about squeaening you screaming,
ain't going to help you? Sure, card, not before I
picked you.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Oh what hit me?
Speaker 4 (23:19):

I'll show you.
Speaker 5 (23:24):

as Clark kent.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
Jimmy, Jimmy, all right, it's a kid. Where'd you come from?
And when I walked out of your store, I saw
that car stop and it looked suspicious, so I followed it. Jimmy,
your mother's fainted. She got scared when the man went
to hit me. Where do you live, Jimmy, the next house.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
I'll carry your mother up.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
Here. We are all right, leave the way to mister Kennet.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
Was lucky who came along?
Speaker 1 (24:02):
That guy was all set to hit me.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
Did you recognize him or was he He was the
Nillis collector.
Speaker 1 (24:07):

Speaker 4 (25:41):
Okay, good bye? Thought he saw a man in a
red cape flying eh. I have got to be careful.
Too many people are seeing me as Superman. But there's
one person who's going to see me and not like
it so much. Jip Dell. Tomorrow, I'll clean his place
(26:02):
out and make certain he leaves town for good, or
my name isn't Superman.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
But even as Clark Kent utters the threat, the long
black sedan pulls up in front of Jeff Danelli's headquarters
on the far side of town, and fight gets out Hurrently.
A moment later, he enter Danelly's private office. Well, of course,
I hate to tell you, but we had trouble. What
do you mean, Well, everything worked.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
Like a top.
Speaker 5 (26:34):
We trailed the kid and this old lady to a
dark side street when Tony pull over the curb and
hopped out the grab and you see, I had a
grip on the kid.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
When a guy come out of.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
Nowhere's and clip me.
Speaker 5 (26:46):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
It's a big guy with a normal wallop. Before I
could make a movie, let me have it. Well, I
ran for the car and we got away just in time.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
We cut over the river and doubled back. Nobody fallen
clutch You that reporter Clark camp him.
Speaker 9 (27:02):
I don't know, Gyp.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
This guy was big awful big sound right? Can's behind this?
You say he worked for the Daily Planet? Yeah, that's
what he said. The Olson kid works for the Planet too.
So what I got an idea? Maybe a could one?
I mean the telephone book. Okay, what's jim you see.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
There?
Speaker 5 (27:26):
It is and missus Henry Olsen store residents logan six
two five one operator get me logan sixty two five
to one. What you call him?
Speaker 4 (27:40):
Ve for GYP? See hello, hello Jimmy, as is Clark?
Can you can? You must be something wrong with the
phone connection. Listen, Jimmy, I haven't got much time. I
got to see you right away a little while ago.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Yeah, I know something came up. I need your help.
It's it's about then, Nelly. Can you meet meet the
cornor Spruce in the second street in ten minutes. I
don't want to leave mom now, Oh.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
Sure, bring her along. It's newspaper business, all right. I'll
be there with miss Lane. Good see you in ten minutes.
That's not luck. I don't know what it is. What
do you mean?
Speaker 5 (28:24):
The kid told me a dame named Lois Lane's at
his house and who she is a reporter of that
same paper, a daily planet. So what how can you
be stim What do you mean? So what we supposing
she is a reporter for the paper. We don't want
that paper to print nothing about us, do we?
Speaker 4 (28:43):
No, No, they won't not.
Speaker 5 (28:45):
Now we'll meet the kid and that Lane girl and
we'll take them for a ride, a nice little ride
in the country. Get the car ready, Will Lois Lane
walk into the traft that Nelly has set for her
and Jimmy or she's smart enough to realize it was not.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
Clark Kendall, call what will happen? Tune in next time
and follow the thrilling adventures of Superman.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
Up in the sky. It's the Bird in the Pain,
It's Superman.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
Superman is a copyrighted picture appearing in Action Comics Magazine.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
All right, everybody, welcome back. I got just a few comments,
and then we'll wrap up today. First off, I like
how at the beginning when Clark comes back to Jimmy
Olsen and his mom to give them the money back,
and Jimmy makes a comment, gee, mister Kent, you must
be Superman to get that money back or something like that,
(29:53):
and Clark says, no, Jimmy, not Superman. I love stuff
like that. It's just so great and I'm so glad
that the writers sneak stuff like that in there. You know,
I was thinking that it takes real men to go
to set out to beat up and rough up an
(30:15):
older lady and her little son. Yeah, real, real tough
move there, guys. And I know that they're trying to
teach Superman lescent, but still takes a real man to
do that. But and later we have one of Jimmy
(30:36):
Olsen's not proudest moments, and that is where he is
completely duped by Danelly on the phone. Danelly does not
even try to disguise his voice to sound like Clark Kent,
doesn't even try to, and Jimmy Olsen just completely falls
(30:59):
for it, no questions asked, and I'm like, Jimmy, come
on boy. And at the end there we have the
narrator asking will Lois Lane believe that it was Clark
Kent or will she be smart enough to know the truth,
(31:19):
And it's like, how can she be? She wasn't the
one that got the phone call. She's going to take
what Jimmy Olsen's told her? Or is going to tell
her and she's going to believe it. I mean, think
about it. If your best friend or one of the
people that you associate with came up to you and said, hey,
(31:40):
your brother wants to meet you down the road, You're
going to go down the road expecting to meet up
with your brother because you have no reason to believe otherwise,
and so of course Lois Lane is probably going to
fall for it. Well that's all for today, folks. Thank
(32:02):
you so much for listening again. If you have any comments,
you can send them to O.
