Speaker 1 (00:00):
Shaman, a seedy horse, motives even to leave poor buildings
in a single boom.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Guy's Yes, it's Superman, strange visitor from another world who
came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those
of martal Man. Superman who can change the course of
mighty rivers, then Steen in his bare hands, and who
disguised as bart can mild manner report him for a great,
(00:36):
better public newspaper, write the never ending battle book through
justice and the American Way.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Well, greetings, folks, welcome back to Superman's Saturdays here on
the old time Radio Mystery, suspense and horror podcast. So
glad that you are tuning in. Today we get into
parts three and four of the Mystery of Dyerville, So
(01:23):
let's go ahead and do that. The title of part
three here is The Wolf versus the Yellow Mask, and
this one aired March twenty second of nineteen forty.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Enjoy presenting the transcription feature Superman up in the sky.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Look, it's a plat, it's a plane. It's Superman.
Speaker 5 (01:54):
Now Superman that'ster than an airplane, stronger than a locomotive,
able to leap tall buildings at a single bound. Champion
of the Weak and the oppressed, tireless fighter for truth
and justice. When we last saw him, Superman had just
rescued Lois Lane from a gang of convicts at San
Miguel Prison, only to learn at the last minute that
(02:15):
the two leaders of the riot, Keno and the Wolf,
have made good their escape. In the confusion, alarms ring
and sirens wail, but the two fugitives are nowhere to
be seen. Kenon Lois return home, bringing their story of
the riot, and by a curious coincidence, the Wolf and
Keno arrive in the same city at about the same time.
(02:38):
Following instructions, they make their way to the underground hideout
of the Yellow Mask.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
Listen, listen, boys, sure you know where you're going, said Lekino.
Although why we were told to take this roundabout way,
I'm sure I can't tell you. Leave that to the
Mask boys. He knows what he's doing. Indeed, Qino, then
perhaps you can explain why he left us so long
in that confounded jail. He knows what he's doing. He
show us ever have let us go to jail at all?
(03:05):
How could he help it? That guy can't the report.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
It's his business to help it.
Speaker 6 (03:10):
He made fools us, said not let him hear you
say that. Boy, he'll hear me say more than that
when I find him. Stop where you are.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
We've arrived.
Speaker 7 (03:18):
I don't see nothing.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
This is just a blank wool.
Speaker 6 (03:21):
Watch Keno, there, keep looking, Keno. Look right at the wall. Gee,
it's a door open up right in the rock inside quick.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
And just in time too.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
There's a police car.
Speaker 8 (03:45):
Not far off.
Speaker 7 (03:46):
You think they're looking for us.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
Possibly, but they'll never find us. Stand back you while
the door closes. It's pitch black. I can't see where
I am. It's a passage. Just walk straight ahead. Is
this where we'll find a miss? I hope so, Keno,
And when I do find him, there'll be a settlement, which.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Is quite a bit over you pay for.
Speaker 7 (04:10):
I think what you say.
Speaker 9 (04:11):
You know.
Speaker 6 (04:12):
I've made up my mind. The Mask has run things
far too long. It's my turn now.
Speaker 9 (04:18):
Now.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
You can't say that, but I do say it. Why
should I take second place? I'll run things myself from
now on.
Speaker 7 (04:25):
There's not room for both of us as to let
my frame. I entirely agree with you. It's him the Mask.
Turn on the lights in the house of the mask,
my frame. Be careful what you say.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Very well masked. You heard me.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
It's either you or I.
Speaker 6 (04:42):
And since I happen to have a pistol here in
my pocket.
Speaker 7 (04:44):
So you brought a pistol.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Wolf.
Speaker 7 (04:47):
This is the last time you'll stand in the way
of my voltage.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
That finishes the wolf.
Speaker 7 (04:58):
Keno, I I think I heard you use the term boss.
You will remember after this to whom it applies.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yeah, sure, whatever you say.
Speaker 6 (05:08):
What did you want to see us about?
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Plans?
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Keino?
Speaker 7 (05:12):
Great plans in which you shall have a share, plans
that concern millions of dollars and thousands of lives. Stand
quietly where you are and listen.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
And almost at the same time that the yellow mask
tells Keno we his plans, Editor Perry White of the
Daily Planet speaks to Clark Kent and Lois Lane of
a new assignment.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Hello, their loss, come in close it off.
Speaker 9 (05:36):
Did you want to see both of us, mister White?
Speaker 4 (05:38):
I certainly did.
Speaker 10 (05:39):
You made out so well on that prison break that
I'm going to send you and can out again.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Gee that's great, mister White.
Speaker 9 (05:44):
I'm sure mister Kent could cover it much better alone.
Speaker 10 (05:47):
Well, you are going along, Loss, so sit down and listen.
Have either of you heard what's going on in Dryerville.
Speaker 9 (05:53):
I haven't heard a thing about anything. I have chief
the human encyclopedia. He knows about everything.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
You know where Darvell is lost?
Speaker 9 (06:00):
Only more or less, mister White.
Speaker 10 (06:01):
Well, it's up in the hills, flourishing little city of
about thirty thousand.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Since about two weeks ago, they've been calling it the Jinkstown.
Then all those accidents, is that why, mister White Well,
first they thought it was funny, and then it got serious.
Speaker 10 (06:13):
Now they don't know what to think.
Speaker 9 (06:14):
Why what happened?
Speaker 10 (06:15):
Curious, unbelievable accidents? I think very striking at first, just
all the radio sets went out of whack, all at once,
all at once, and then the telephone say that might
have been serious. It was Kent. Then two days ago,
although there hadn't been any rains, the town was flooded,
flooded three feet deep in water without any warning at all.
The Jefferson River went over its banks and mighty near
drowned them all out, mister White anything else that was
(06:37):
two days ago Kent. Yesterday all the electric power in
the city went off, and today they were rocked by a.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Series of earthquakes in this section of the country.
Speaker 10 (06:45):
Well, heavy explosions far on the ground, and they don't
know what to make of it. People are excited naturally,
and now they're just a little bit afraid.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
Do you blame them asking themselves? What's behind all this?
Speaker 9 (06:56):
And that's where you're sending me and Kent?
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Mister if you'rre, you don't mind loss.
Speaker 9 (07:01):
I feel safe over the more adequate school.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
Oh gosh, miss Lene. I'll do the best I can
to keep you out of trouble.
Speaker 9 (07:08):
Thank you, mister Kent. I'm usually able to do that
much for myself. When do we leave, mister White?
Speaker 10 (07:13):
As soon as you can get an advance from the
cashier and hire a car?
Speaker 4 (07:16):
A car?
Speaker 9 (07:16):
What's the matter with the train?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I don't know. I just have a.
Speaker 9 (07:19):
Feeling, mister White. What do you mean there's.
Speaker 10 (07:21):
Something back of this loss? I don't understand it. All
these things aren't accidents.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
Mister White. Do you think they're intended?
Speaker 10 (07:28):
I don't know, Kent, but if they are, well, I'd
rather have you on a car than on a train
heading into dire Bell.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Come along, I'll see you.
Speaker 11 (07:35):
As far as the casual.
Speaker 12 (07:43):
Yes, this is the yellow Mask.
Speaker 13 (07:45):
This is a fifteen reporting from the Daily Planet Office,
go on fifteen report a clock.
Speaker 6 (07:50):
Kent in the feature right of Lewis Lane will arrive
in Direville by automobile this evening. Not at all?
Speaker 9 (08:01):
Well are you sure you know which way you're going?
Mister Kent?
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Look, Lowis, couldn't you call me Clark?
Speaker 9 (08:06):
Sorry? For some reason, I seen prefer mister Kent, and
I also prefer miss Lane.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
All right, miss Lane? As I was.
Speaker 9 (08:13):
Saying, are you sure you're on the right road?
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Positive? There was a route signed back away to Dyerville?
Speaker 9 (08:18):
And aren't we almost there? What time?
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Is it too dark to see mine? Turning on the
dome light? Thanks, that's half past eleven.
Speaker 9 (08:27):
Look out, there's a car coming.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
I see it.
Speaker 9 (08:29):
Look out, he's coming straight at us.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Mister Kent.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
The idiot. He almost put us in the ditch, driving
like a maniac too.
Speaker 9 (08:38):
What's the matter, nothing, mister Kent. Was there anything strange
about that car?
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Strange? How do you mean?
Speaker 9 (08:45):
I thought, Well, of course I didn't get a very
good look at it, but I thought i'd seen it before.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Not me.
Speaker 9 (08:49):
I thought it passed us a while ago going the
other way.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
What would he be doing that for?
Speaker 11 (08:54):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Look here, Lowis? I mean miss Lane, you're tired and upset.
Speaker 9 (08:58):
Oh no, I'm not, I say you are.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
I think about something else. How about switching on the radio? Huh?
Speaker 9 (09:03):
Thanks?
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Rather? Oh come on, at least we'll get the late news.
Speaker 9 (09:07):
Must you hear the news?
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Why not give it a chance to warm up? First? Look,
miss Lane, they're ahead.
Speaker 9 (09:14):
That's Dyerville down there over the river.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Uh huh, that's the Jefferson. We crossed the toll bridge
and then we're in Dyerville. Nothing doing on the radio.
Speaker 9 (09:22):
I really don't know. Maybe it's broken.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
Lights up?
Speaker 9 (09:25):
All right, look out, there's a car coming up behind us.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Yeah, coming fast too, mister Kent't.
Speaker 9 (09:32):
Be careful, he's not turning out?
Speaker 8 (09:34):
Look out?
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Why the crazy idiot mister Kennon was the same care
You're right? Might I get his number? Hang on? What's
there the radio? I'm gonna catch that fellow. If it's
the last thing I do.
Speaker 12 (09:51):
Go back, mister k Go back, Go back.
Speaker 9 (09:55):
Mister Kent. That voice, where does it come from the radio?
Speaker 1 (09:58):
That's not possible, called me by name? Go back, Go
back to the car.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
That's where it comes from. There's a radio transmitter in
that car. Now, I've got to catch him, right, ahead,
there's the bridge bridge or no bridge. I'm going to
catch that car. Hang on Lois.
Speaker 9 (10:18):
It's gone, mister Kent. There's not a sign of it.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Must be a cattle vanished, mister.
Speaker 9 (10:22):
Kent't be careful the toll bridge. There's a man there
on the marsador. Look out what we're.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Going right through them?
Speaker 9 (10:32):
Did you have to go so first? Just look what
you've done to the gates. Lucky if they don't take
away your license.
Speaker 11 (10:39):
Hey, why do you think you're gone? Can't you see
the lights? I'm sorry, officer, you'll be sorry. Let me
see your license. Youhng collas. There's a toll bridge, not
a speedway. I'll pay the toll, I hope the teller
you'll pay the toll, and you'll pay for them gates too,
And about fifty dollars for reckless driving.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
It wasn't reckless driving, officer. I was chasing that car
ahead and I just got a car.
Speaker 11 (10:57):
What car ahead? You're the only car on this bridge
in the left half hour?
Speaker 4 (11:01):
I tell you there was a car. I saw it.
Speaker 11 (11:03):
Keep on and you'll see pink elephants and green elephants.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
All right? How much is the toll whever?
Speaker 11 (11:08):
You mind the toll. That's the least of your worries.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
The bridge it's shaking. What's the matter the bridge?
Speaker 11 (11:15):
It's another quake.
Speaker 8 (11:16):
Run run, got to save the bridge and save Lois.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Not much time, good thing. It's dark.
Speaker 8 (11:28):
They couldn't see Clark.
Speaker 14 (11:29):
Can't change it to Superman if I can get down
underneath it, down on the piers quick.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
It's going matter of seconds, down, down.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Down through the darkness. Superman plummets like an arrow, while
the great structure of struts and cables sways and groans
above the river, while the car containing Lois Lane slips, halts,
and slips again, nearer to the sudden brink that yawned
suddenly where a moment before with solid paper. Can the
Man of Steel save the bridge of steel? Or have
(12:05):
matters already gone beyond the power of even his incalculable strength?
And whose was the voice on the radio? And what
terrible fate hangs over the town of Dyerville? Tune in
next time and follow the story, and remember be sure
to tune in the next thrilling installment of the amazing
transcription feature Superman.
Speaker 8 (12:29):
Up in the sky.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Nop, it's a bird, It's a plain it's Superman.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Superman is a copyrighted feature appearing in Action Comics magazine.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
All right, everybody, welcome back. Well, we have an interesting
turn of events here where the Wolf meets his end
the Yellow Mask takes him out. One thing in this
situation that I would have liked to say different. I
(13:06):
would have liked to have seen more of a fight
between the wolf and the Yellow Mask. That would have
been pretty cool. But instead the Yellow Mask is just
kind of like this and the wolf is gone. They
seem to want to stick with this pattern of a
sort of of a sort of two bad guys set
(13:27):
up where you have the main leader and his henchmen. Also,
it was interesting that Keno had no emotional response to
the death of the wolf. He was just like, hmm,
interesting and just completely went on with talking to the
(13:48):
Yellow Mask, just like nothing had happened. And you would
have thought that as much time as the wolf and
Keno had spent together, both outside and inside of jail,
Keino would have had a little bit of an emotional
response maybe to the wolf's death. But at any rate,
(14:09):
It's just something that I kind of stuck out to me.
And of course we have Julian Noah's Perry White. He
mispronounces Dierville, he messes up, and he says Dryerville.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Have either of you heard what's going on in Dryerville?
Speaker 9 (14:24):
I haven't heard a thing about anything.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
I have and not a big issue or anything, but
I'm wondering if these episodes were recorded live and they
you know, if you made a mistake, then too bad.
It really does make me wonder how the production was
on these or if they just didn't have the money
(14:47):
to go back and do a lot of re recording.
I wonder. And we have Lois, of course, played by
Helen Choke. She is her normal snarky elf, and there
were a couple of moments like in the car where
she's like, please call me miss Lane. That's funny, And
(15:10):
of course there was this moment that I thought was
kind of funny.
Speaker 9 (15:14):
Did you want to see both of us, mister White?
Speaker 4 (15:16):
I certainly did.
Speaker 10 (15:17):
You made out so well on that prison break that
I'm going to send you and Ken out again.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
Gee that's great, mister White.
Speaker 9 (15:22):
I'm sure mister Kent could cover it much better alone.
Speaker 10 (15:25):
Well, you are going along, Lowis, so sit down and listen.
Have either of you heard what's going on in Dryerville.
Speaker 9 (15:30):
I haven't heard a thing about anything. I have chief
the Human Encyclopedia.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
He knows about everything, you know where.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
So yeah, the writers definitely have Lois Lane just playing
the role just kind of really snarky and really just
mean quite frankly, just really jealous almost of Clark. Like
I said, I know what the writers are trying to do.
They're trying to bring out the irony of it all.
(15:57):
Where here you have Lois who is just so against
Clark and doesn't like Clark at all, but Clark is,
as we know, Superman. So but I feel like the
writers might be going overboard with it just a little bit.
And later on in the show when John Alexander takes
over the role as Lois Lane, she's definitely going to
(16:21):
play that down a little bit more. And so Helen
Choate's role here isn't going to last that long. Here
on the Superman Radio Program, of course, we have that
part where Lois reprimands Clark for being unable to stop
(16:41):
the car and crashing it.
Speaker 9 (16:43):
It's not a sign of them.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
It must be a kind of vanished.
Speaker 9 (16:46):
Mister Kenby Cave the toll bridge. There's a man there
in the market look out what we're going right through them?
Did you have to go so fast? Just look what
you've done to the gates. Lucky if they don't take
away your license.
Speaker 11 (17:02):
He why do you think you're gone? And you see
the lights? I'm sorry, officer, you'll be sorry. Let me
see your license, Jong Feller, there's a toll bridge, not
a speedway.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
I'll pay the toll.
Speaker 11 (17:11):
I hope the teller. You'll pay the toll, and you'll
pay for them gates too, And about fifty dollars for
reckless driving.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
It wasn't reckless driving, officer. I was chasing that car ahead,
and I just had a car.
Speaker 11 (17:21):
What car ahead? You're the only car on this bridge
in the left half, har I tell you there was
a car.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
I saw it.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
I love how Clark was like, but sir, I wasn't
reckless driving. I was just chasing a car. And it's like,
with no context, that really does sound like reckless driving.
And then of course we have the bridge there at
(17:49):
the end where the bridge there where there seems to
be an earthquake or something and the bridge is in
danger and Clark he's able to transform into Superman under
cover of darkness. How convenient and that is our cliffhanger.
I like that part at the end where the announcer
was like, can the Man of Steel save the Bridge
(18:11):
of Steel or something like that. That was funny. All Right, everybody,
we are going to take a quick break and then
we'll be right back with part four of the Mystery
of Dierville. Okay, everybody, let's go ahead and get into
part four here of the Mystery of Dierville. The title
(18:35):
of this episode is The Secret Empire. And this one
aired March twenty fifth of nineteen forty and.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Enjoy presenting the transcription feature Superman.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Up in the sky.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Look, it's a part, It's a plane, It's Superman.
Speaker 11 (19:02):
And now Superman.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
When we last saw him, Clark Kent was traveling toward
the mountain city of Dyerville with Lois Lane to investigate
a curious chain of disasters and accidents that had held
the city in a grip of fear for the past
eight days. But as they reached the toll bridge over
the Jefferson River leading into Diyerville, the bridge suddenly trembled
and swayed. Lois screamed as their automobile slid toward the
guard rail, and Kent leaped away in the darkness. As
(19:25):
our story continues, he has become Superman Red Cloak. Streaming
in the wind, he plummets down through the night in
a desperate effort to save the bridge and prevent the
car from plunging into the river below.
Speaker 14 (19:36):
Listener, the bridge is shaking like a tree in a
high wind. If I can get downe undridd and hold it,
hind out what's wrong here?
Speaker 3 (19:47):
We are?
Speaker 14 (19:50):
Why the foundation's have gone blown apart? Has ever had
been hit by a shell or a torpedo? Those girders
are just hanging loose. If I can only put them
back where they belong.
Speaker 11 (20:01):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
It's pretty far gone, but maybe I can make it.
Speaker 14 (20:05):
If I don't, the whole thing will fall up, crashing
the river low us along with it.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Now, then one more pull made it twisted that steel
work back into place.
Speaker 14 (20:17):
Now to return to Lowess on the bridge as Clark
Kent up up.
Speaker 9 (20:27):
What's happened? Where are the lights so dark?
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Kin't Kent's?
Speaker 4 (20:34):
I mean, miss Lane? Are you all right at the bridge?
Speaker 9 (20:37):
What about the bridge?
Speaker 4 (20:38):
Oh, don't worry about the bridge.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
But what was it?
Speaker 9 (20:40):
What happened?
Speaker 4 (20:40):
I don't know. Maybe the foundation gave way in the flood.
We'll be all right if we keep going. Come on,
get back in the car. Lucky it didn't roll off
the bridge and smash up.
Speaker 9 (20:49):
Can't we can't cross now?
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Oh? Yes, we cannot. I've played the toll, Clark.
Speaker 9 (20:53):
Can't you fool on not thinking about the toll? The
bridge will go down with nor.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
It won't Lows. It's safe now, I'm sure. Come on,
get in here we go. If you're the least bit afraid,
just shut your eyes.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
Clark Kent and Lewis Lane crossed the damaged bridge safely
and arrive in Dierville next morning in the office of
the city commissioner. They wait for an interview.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
Oh here he is now. Good morning, Good morning, Good morning, commissioner.
Speaker 13 (21:23):
Morning, and this is miss Lane. I take it and
mister Clark Kent, both of the Daily Planet.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Sorry to bother your commissioner, but we're after a story
about what's been going on in Dierville.
Speaker 13 (21:32):
Come into my office and close the door. All right,
Sit down, miss Lane, mister Kim, thanks Commissioner.
Speaker 9 (21:39):
We won't take up too much of your time.
Speaker 13 (21:41):
I don't worry. If you were ordinary reporters, you wouldn't
take up any of it. I'd see to that, but
I've had a call from your editor.
Speaker 9 (21:47):
Oh you have, mister White.
Speaker 13 (21:49):
As Perry White of the Daily Planet. It's about you
can't me as mister White tells me that you're not
only a good reporter. Mart did you seem to have
a knight who's digging out what's back of things?
Speaker 4 (21:58):
Well, I'm sure I don't.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
Know what's anak or just dumb luck.
Speaker 13 (22:02):
Either one will do me because if I don't get
to the bottom of this business.
Speaker 4 (22:05):
And soon Just what's happening, Commissioner.
Speaker 13 (22:08):
Well, have you heard about the Jefferson Bridge last night?
Speaker 4 (22:11):
What?
Speaker 13 (22:11):
The South pier was carried away as if a giant
monster had bitten a chunk.
Speaker 11 (22:15):
Out of it.
Speaker 9 (22:15):
Good heavens, and we were on it.
Speaker 13 (22:17):
Yes, but that's not all. Whatever it was, some human
agency or a mysterious force not only almost took the
bridge away, but put it back. What that's what I say.
Most of the steel girders were torn loose from their rivets,
but someone replaced them, twisted them together so they'd hold.
Why only a superman could have done it.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
Superman, just imagine that.
Speaker 13 (22:38):
Well, forget about the bridge, it's the least of what's happened.
There was the matter of the electric power three days
ago and went completely out for no explainable reason.
Speaker 9 (22:47):
And what about that flood, Commissioner, Yes.
Speaker 13 (22:49):
The flood and the earthquakes or explosions or whatever they were.
I tell you I can't stand much more of this,
None of us can. We never know from one to
another what's going to happen next.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
And there's no explanation, no clue of any kind, Ken,
n no one.
Speaker 13 (23:08):
But if they're not accidents, what if there's some human
fiend behind all this? What's he trying to do? What
does he want? Does he intend wiping the city off the.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
R Take it easy, Commissioner. There's probably some very simple explanation.
Speaker 13 (23:21):
All right, all right, probably there is. But you find it, Ken,
go out and dig it up. Say, I've had the
best men I know on it so far, and I
haven't found a thing. I tell you, I am at
the end of my rope.
Speaker 4 (23:34):
Well, miss Lane, and I may be able to help, Commissioner.
Speaker 13 (23:36):
And I hope so can. I hope so because of
this madness doesn't stop soon, I think we'll all go
out of our minds. If there's just one more catastrophe,
one more unexplained accident. Hello, Yes, here's this the commissioner.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
What hard?
Speaker 11 (23:55):
When did it happen?
Speaker 9 (23:56):
Mister Kent?
Speaker 12 (23:56):
What is it?
Speaker 4 (23:57):
Quiet? I want to hear what We'll get it.
Speaker 13 (24:00):
Every boat in the river, you understand, every boat, yes,
called tugs and police launches.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
But land that barge.
Speaker 13 (24:07):
Get it out of trouble.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Listen, something's gone wrong on the river.
Speaker 13 (24:10):
He yes, call me back. I'll be right here by
the phone.
Speaker 9 (24:13):
Commission what is it?
Speaker 4 (24:14):
What's happened?
Speaker 13 (24:15):
There's a railroad barge with fifteen tank cars on it,
loaded with gasoline. It broke loose from its tug. It's
drifting downstream toward the fall and they can't stop it.
They can't stop it. The tide's too strong. They can't
do a thing.
Speaker 9 (24:31):
Kent, Where are you going?
Speaker 4 (24:32):
Where do you think I have to find that barge?
I'll see a later, Commissioner. You wait here, miss Lane,
some story in that. I'll be back as soon as
they can.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Wait.
Speaker 9 (24:40):
Wait up and you wait.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
Sorry, lois can't stop now there's an emergency like that.
It's time Clark Kent gave way to Superman. Ha, here's
a window coming in sight. Good We're up and away
off like a streak of light.
Speaker 5 (25:00):
Superman leaps into the air heads for the river and
disappears in the bank of mist. Meanwhile, the Jefferson River
is a scene of terror and confusion. Whistle scream, but
nothing can stop the swift course of the helpless railroad barge,
caught in the rapid current and moving ever faster toward
the falls. The two men on the barge are frantic
with fear.
Speaker 4 (25:18):
They can't asp.
Speaker 13 (25:19):
We're going faster and faster, get ahead, ain't ad the falls,
So we're going over.
Speaker 4 (25:24):
We're going over. Sure, we gotta jump.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Jump is swift?
Speaker 4 (25:27):
No, No, don't chop.
Speaker 11 (25:28):
Stay with the barge.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
It's our only chance.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
I say, you will be chilled, drowned, the smash the pieces.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Jump jump, I tell you jump.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
Ah, there's the barge and there are the falls too.
Not much time.
Speaker 14 (25:47):
Got to dive down there, grab that barge load of
railroad cars and told them back where they came from.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
I must be careful.
Speaker 14 (25:53):
One spark might set that gasoline off down into the water.
Speaker 12 (25:56):
Down.
Speaker 14 (25:57):
No, now that three good strokes and I'm there.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
Two the barge.
Speaker 14 (26:14):
Now all I have to do is throw it back
up the river, and without being seen, here we go.
Speaker 5 (26:25):
Superman, exerting his terrific strength, brings the heavily loaded barge
around in the river, forces it upstream, eases it safely
into a dock, and disappears again in the murky water
of the Jefferson River, and presently back in the office
of the city commissioner, where Lois still waits.
Speaker 13 (26:41):
There it is there. It is not barge. It's gone
over the falls. I hardly dare answer the.
Speaker 9 (26:47):
Phone, Shall I take a commissioner?
Speaker 1 (26:48):
No?
Speaker 5 (26:48):
No?
Speaker 10 (26:50):
Hello?
Speaker 13 (26:51):
Yes, what you you say? It's save. It slid back upstream,
floated into a dock, and it didn't go over the falls.
Hey wait a minute, you're sure? Hard I don't care
how it happened. All I need to know is there safe,
(27:12):
Miss Lae ms Lane. That barge is all right?
Speaker 9 (27:14):
Well, commissioner, what's happened?
Speaker 6 (27:16):
Well?
Speaker 13 (27:16):
Hand? Oh no, some crazy, impossible story, But who cares
about that? Here's come in, Come.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
In, oh, commissioner, Hi, miss Lane.
Speaker 13 (27:25):
Well hello there, Kent. I guess you've heard the news.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
Too about the barge. Yes, and I decided I might
as welcome back.
Speaker 9 (27:31):
You didn't get your big story after all, did you?
Speaker 4 (27:33):
Mister Kent, Oh, there's still a story, miss Lane.
Speaker 13 (27:36):
What do you mean? What do you mean?
Speaker 4 (27:38):
That affair of the railroad barge breaking away from its
tug was no accident, sir.
Speaker 9 (27:42):
Mister Kent knows all the answers, Commissioner.
Speaker 4 (27:45):
Those cars and that gasoline were meant to go over
the Jefferson River falls Ken, you're joking, No, no, I'm
not joking, mister Kent. How do you know all this
very simple? Miss Lane? The steel cable joining the barge
and the tug didn't break, it was cut. Here have
you heard?
Speaker 11 (28:03):
Did you get it?
Speaker 8 (28:04):
Get?
Speaker 11 (28:04):
What?
Speaker 13 (28:05):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 10 (28:05):
Wick?
Speaker 1 (28:06):
Turn on your radio, radio, radio.
Speaker 13 (28:08):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 9 (28:09):
Come on, it's on.
Speaker 12 (28:10):
Commission calling the city of Listen, listen calling the city
of Tierville. The Secret Empire demands the sum of one
million dollars.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
One million dollars.
Speaker 12 (28:24):
Is the price of Tierville to be paid by midnight tomorrow.
If it is not paid, Gioville will cease twigses. This
is the yellow mass Dioville calling.
Speaker 11 (28:38):
The sheep thing off? What does it mean?
Speaker 4 (28:41):
What does it mean?
Speaker 9 (28:42):
Can did you hear the yellow mask? We thought he
was dead killed when that plane crash what's.
Speaker 13 (28:47):
She talking about?
Speaker 8 (28:48):
Ken?
Speaker 4 (28:49):
What is it, Commissioner? It means just this, Miss Lane
and I have met the Yellow Mask before. It means
that unless you raise one million dollars by midnight tomorrow,
Dyreville will be wiped off the face of the earth.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
Suddenly, like the shadow of a dreadful nightmare, the hand
of the Yellow Mask hangs darkly over Direville. Now the
reason is clear. For the long chain of accidents that
plagued the city, the Yellow Mask has been placing the
people of the town in the grip of a deadly terror.
What will happen next? What can Superman do in the
few short hours that remain? Tune in next time and
(29:25):
follow the story. Be sure to tune in the next
thrilling installment of the amazing transcription feature Superman.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Up in the Sky Loop It's a bird, It's a plane.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
HiT's Superman.
Speaker 5 (29:42):
Superman is a copyrighted feature appearing in Action Comics Magazine.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
All right, so we have a nice save here in
the beginning of this with Clark saving the bridge and everything,
And of course we have that comment by Lois at
the beginning where she was like Clark, we can't cross
this bridge. And then Clark is like, of course we can, Lois,
I've paid the toll.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
Maybe all right if we keep going, come on, get
back in the car. Lucky it didn't roll off the
bridge and smash up.
Speaker 9 (30:14):
Can't we can't cross now?
Speaker 3 (30:16):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (30:16):
Yes we cannot. I've paid the toll, Clark, can't you.
Speaker 9 (30:19):
Fool on not thinking about the toll? The bridge'll go
down with.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
Nor it won't low us. It's safe, No, I'm sure.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
Uh, Clark can't being funny. You gotta love it. I
love it when they add in humor and comedy into
the show. Really do enjoy that. Now, when Clark and
Lewis do get to Dierville and they're talking to the
commissioner and he's thanking them for coming and everything, and
he's talking about how they can help the city, And
(30:46):
I'm thinking, is this really the job for reporters? I mean,
shouldn't you be calling in like the police or the FBI.
This isn't really reporter type. It was very strange, and
the commissioner references, he references the bridge being saved by
(31:07):
what he referred to as a superman. Now, I'll say
this several times, but I don't think that most people
would ever really use that phrase unless you already knew
about Superman. I don't think many people would just go
around saying that would take a Superman. And if we
(31:30):
do that today, I think it is because we are
so familiar with the Superman character. But I know exactly
what the writers are doing. They're trying to give the
kids at home a little something to, you know, perk
their ears up and be like, ah, he said a Superman.
You don't know how right that is. And we have
Clark faking surprise there in that saying that was funny.
Speaker 13 (31:53):
From the rivets, but someone replaced them, twisted them together
so they'd hold not only a Superman could have done it.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Just imagine that.
Speaker 13 (32:02):
Well, forget about the bridge, it's the least of what's happened.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
The commissioner goes on to say that it's possible that
there's something human going on behind all these terrible things
happening in Dyerville. And there we have a hint that
you know, the Yellow Mask is behind this, although we
don't really know that yet. But seeing as the first
(32:25):
two episodes of the storyline involve the Yellow Mask and Keno,
that's no surprise. And we have a small voice change
that Bud Collier does so well when he's transitioning from
Clark Kent into Superman, and this one isn't drastic, and
he will do some down the road that are just
(32:46):
more drastic than this, but no one does this like
Bud Collier did it absolutely amazing, And like I said,
this one isn't a huge voice transition, but it's sort
of like one of the first ones here on the show.
And he'll get better and better at that as the
Superman radio program continues and we have a nice save.
(33:09):
Superman saves the boat from going over the falls. Wasn't
too impressed with the sound effects in this episode. The
sound effects felt like to me were kind of done
on a cheap budget. For example, with the tug sounds,
it almost sounded like someone was standing in front of
(33:30):
the microphone with one of those like with a seashell
or something going woo. But you know, they just didn't
have probably a lot of resources back then for that
kind of stuff.
Speaker 9 (33:46):
It's only chat. I'll tell you what.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
We chilled, drowned, the smashed, the places jump jump.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
There was also a little bit of a lack of
sound during the actual bar rescue. You know, we hear
Clark or sorry Superman saving the barge, but if it
wasn't for like him grunning and struggling a little bit,
it would be difficult to envision what was going on
(34:17):
just by listening to this. They certainly could have had,
in my opinion, more sound effects during that scene. And
then when Clark gets back after saving the barge as Superman,
Lois is like, bet you didn't too bad. You didn't
get that big story. And it's like, instead of being
glad that the barge did not end up going over
(34:40):
the falls and people dying, you're like, oh, this is
a chance that I can take another shot at Clark.
It's like, oh Lois, Lois, Lois so hard to get
along with. And then when the yelling mass there at
the end calls the commission well really calls Dyerville and
(35:00):
announces his plans, his devious plans. We have the references
from Clark and Lois where they tell the commissioner that, hey,
this is the yellow Mask. We've dealt with him before,
and Lois, I believe, was like I thought he died
in the plane crash from a few storylines ago, and
I absolutely I know I've said it and I'll continue
(35:21):
to say it, but I absolutely love it when they
reference past storylines. I really do. It just brings this
sort of continuity to the program, to the show, and
I really do love when they do that, especially since
they are bringing back characters from past episodes. I'm so
(35:44):
glad that they are actually referencing some of those past storylines. Okay, folks,
so we have this threat from the Yellow Mask. Will
he follow through on? What's going to happen? A lot
going on here, guys. All right, everybody that is going
to do it for today. If you have any comments
(36:04):
about these two episodes or this storyline that you would
like to share with me, you can always send them
to O t r msh at gmail dot com. Thank
you so much for listening. Everybody, tell your friends and
family about the podcast and I'll catch you on the
next episode.
